Simon & Schuster Ltd Shoe Dog
Book Synopsis'A refreshingly honest reminder of what the path to business success really looks like ... It's an amazing tale' Bill Gates'The best book I read last year was Shoe Dog, by Nike's Phil Knight. Phil is a very wise, intelligent and competitive fellow who is also a gifted storyteller' Warren Buffett In 1962, fresh out of business school, Phil Knight borrowed $50 from his father and created a company with a simple mission: import high-quality, low-cost athletic shoes from Japan. Selling the shoes from the boot of his Plymouth, Knight grossed $8000 in his first year. Today, Nike's annual sales top $30 billion. In an age of start-ups, Nike is the ne plus ultra of all start-ups, and the swoosh has become a revolutionary, globe-spanning icon, one of the most ubiquitous and recognisable symbols in the world today. But Knight, the man behind the swoosh, has always remained a mystery. Now, for the first time, he tells his story. Candid, humble, wry and gutsy, he begins with his crossroads moment when at 24 he decided to start his own business. He details the many risks and daunting setbacks that stood between him and his dream - along with his early triumphs. Above all, he recalls how his first band of partners and employees soon became a tight-knit band of brothers. Together, harnessing the transcendent power of a shared mission, and a deep belief in the spirit of sport, they built a brand that changed everything. A memoir rich with insight, humour and hard-won wisdom, this book is also studded with lessons - about building something from scratch, overcoming adversity, and ultimately leaving your mark on the world.

Book SynopsisTrade Review"It's a psychological thriller, each page percolating with the triumphant darkness that is Marc David Rich." --Bloomberg News "An empathetic look at the notorious Marc Rich, one of the most successful and controversial commodities traders in recent history and a key figure in the invention of the spot market. With unparalleled access to Rich, his family and associates, business journalist Ammann paints a nuanced portrait of the man vilified for trading with Iran and apartheid-era South Africa, accused of being the biggest tax fraudster in U.S. history and recipient of an infamous presidential pardon. This meticulous account sets the record straight on a reluctant public figure who lost in the court of public opinion, but escaped being tried in a court of law." --Publishers Weekly "Is Rich a rogue or a philanthropic businessman? Ammann lets readers draw their own conclusion. This book reads like a cross between a rags-to-riches saga and a cloak-and-dagger thriller, but it's also an excellent and timely primer on the world of commodities trading within a global economy and will greatly appeal to readers interested in current events." --Library Journal

Unicorn Publishing Group Shirley: The Life of a Botanical Adventurer
Book SynopsisShirley, The Life of a Botanical Adventurer is the remarkable story of Dr Shirley Sherwood, scientist, author, travel writer, gardener as well as mother and grandmother. Following the tragic death of her brilliant scientist husband, Michael Cross, in a freak air crash in 1964, she was left as a 30-year-old widow with two young boys aged four and three. For the next twelve years she worked as a key member of the Nobel Prize-winning team which developed Tagamet, the first block-buster drug (sales of over $1 billion a year). After her marriage to Jim Sherwood in 1977, she left science to concentrate full-time on the huge task of restoring the fabled Orient-Express train, probably the most luxurious and exotic form of travel ever devised. The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, running between London and Venice, was relaunched in 1982, ninety-nine years after its first journey. Sherwood's history of the project sold more than 400,000 copies. The Orient-Express train was just the beginning. The Sherwoods went on to create the five-star Orient-Express Hotels company (now Belmond), which owned some of the finest hotels in the world, including the Cipriani in Venice, the Mount Nelson in Cape Town and the Copacabana Palace in Rio. They pioneered new train routes across the Alps, started the Eastern & Oriental Express running between Singapore and Bangkok- crossing over the Bridge on the River Kwai- opened up tourism in Myanmar with the first cruise ship to operate on the Irrawaddy, and took over the railways of Peru, which run all the way to Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca. Her most lasting achievement, the one of which she is proudest, is the Shirley Sherwood Collection of contemporary botanical art, which she started in 1990 and now includes over 1,000 paintings and drawings representing the work of more than 300 contemporary botanical artists from 36 countries. She has mounted exhibitions in many prestigious locations including the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, Kirstenbosch in Cape Town and the Real Jardin Botanico, Madrid. The Shirley Sherwood Gallery in Kew Gardens is the first museum to be dedicated to modern botanical art and her books, which often accompanied her exhibitions, have been largely responsible for re-establishing botanical art in its rightful place as an important art form. These are just some of the many achievements in a long and rich life, vividly described in this book.Trade Review"Shirley Sherwood put botanical art firmly back on the agenda with her incredible collection and her unremitting quest for only the very best." – Sir Roy Strong CH FRSL “A remarkable and sophisticated life of science, travel and passion for the best of contemporary botanical art." - Sir Peter Crane FRS "Shirley is an inspiration in how to use one’s gifts wisely and live life well. Her memoir is a delight." - Dame Mary Archer"this is a compelling tale of a life rich in incident and bravery" -- Steven Desmond

Permuted Press Uneven Justice: The Plot to Sink Galleon
Book SynopsisThe inside story of a case that illustrates the horrific perils of unchecked prosecutorial overreach, written by the man who experienced it firsthand.Raj Rajaratnam, the respected founder of the iconic hedge fund Galleon Group, which managed $7 billion and employed 180 people in its heyday, chose to go to trial rather than concede to a false narrative concocted by ambitious prosecutors looking for a scapegoat for the 2008 financial crisis. Naively perhaps, Rajaratnam had expected to get a fair hearing in court. As an immigrant who had achieved tremendous success in his adopted country, he trusted the system. He had not anticipated prosecutorial overreach—inspired by political ambition—FBI fabrications, judicial compliance, and lies told under oath by cooperating witnesses. In the end, Rajaratnam was convicted and sentenced to eleven years in prison. He served seven and a half. Meanwhile, not a single senior bank executive responsible for the financial crisis was even charged. Uneven Justice is the story of his bewildering and confounding prosecution by forces who, quite frankly, were looking for bigger game. When Rajaratnam refused to support the narrative that would make that happen, he and the Galleon Group became collateral damage. A cautionary tale with implications for us all, Uneven Justice is both a riveting page-turner and an eye-opening lesson in the vagaries of justice when an unscrupulous prosecutor is calling the shots.Trade Review“The book, "Uneven Justice," makes a persuasive case that this prosecution served to cover up the embarrassment of the Obama DOJ's malfeasance and advance the ambitious Bharara's career. But it's most important point is that the entire justice system is rigged against defendants. Obviously, few people are going to sympathize with a billionaire hedge fund manager. But that's the point. That's not the book's goal. His case is done. The book is a genuine, serious, in-depth study of all the ways federal prosecutors have unchecked power to destroy people. Federal prosecutors routinely threaten people's families, conceal exculpatory evidence, exploit the fact that almost anything is a crime, and in general have rigged the system to make acquittal almost impossible. If it takes Rajaratnam to help expose that, this book is welcomed.” -- Glenn Greenwald, Pulitzer Prize winning Journalist, NY Times Best Selling Author and former constitutional lawyer

Simon & Schuster Up Close and All In: Life Lessons from a Wall
Book SynopsisFrom John Mack, former CEO of Morgan Stanley, an intimate personal memoir and riveting business story, recounting how he helped grow the company from 300 to 50,000 employees over four decades, transformed a notoriously competitive culture into a successful and collaborative one, and lead the company through the 2008 financial crisis.During his thirty-four-year tenure at Morgan Stanley, John Mack’s goal was to build the strongest and most productive team on Wall Street. His ability to motivate his employees to do their best work, especially in times of crisis, was fostered by his willingness to slash through bureaucracy and stand up to powerful interests. A forceful personality, one journalist said Mack was “described as ‘charismatic’ so regularly that it could be part of his name.” In Up Close and All In, Mack traces his personal journey from a one-stoplight North Carolina mill town to a fortieth-floor corner office on Wall Street—and shares the life lessons he learned along the way. He developed a titanium-strength stomach for risk, stress, and competition while landing accounts early in his career, as investment banks fought like wolfpacks to take advantage of new deregulation, fielding business raids, booms, and busts. As he rose through the ranks, he never forgot where he came from, relying on his instincts, doing what was right, and listening to his people on the front lines. This culture of trust and collaboration helped Morgan Stanley anticipate future trends before other firms, adapt quickly, and achieve record profits. This gripping memoir includes both humbling lows—like when Mack made the difficult decision to leave Morgan Stanley in 2001—and exhilarating highs—such as when he made an eleventh-hour agreement with the Japanese bank Mitsubishi to save the company during the 2008 financial crisis, having refused to give in when top regulators pressured him to sell the firm for $2 per share. With humor and honesty, Mack shares advice on both business and life: how to create a culture of team players, how to keep perspective during crises, how to make difficult decisions when all eyes are on you, and more. From a singular man who’s as unafraid to cry publicly as he is to anger some of the most powerful people in the world, this is an indispensable guide to living and leading well.Trade Review"John Mack has written a fascinating, fast-paced autobiography highlighting his visionary leadership throughout a long and distinguished career. In 2008 when global financial markets were rocked by an unprecdented crisis and Morgan Stanley faced a real solvency threat, he brilliantly negotiated an infusion of private capital to secure Morgan Stanley's future and he worked with the Treasury and the Federal Reserve to transform the firm from an investment bank to a bank regulated by the Federal Reserve with access to its financing window. Under his leadership, Morgan Stanley repaid the $10 million loan it was required to take by the government within two years with a 20% return to taxpayers. Having led Morgan Stanley through unprecedented challenges, he worked with his board to name James Gorman as his successor—another in a long line of decisions that have benefitted the firm he loved. This book is a testament to John Mack’s title as a Wall Street legend." -Laura Tyson, Distinguished Professor of the Graduate School “This is authentic John Mack- a strong, decisive leader who has written a book which is a must read for anyone who wants the first hand account of his successful struggle to save Morgan Stanley, the iconic Wall Street bank.” -Hank Paulson, 74th Secretary of the Treasury“John and I are the best of friends, I have learned so much about leadership from him. His gripping memoir tells the intimate, inspiring details of his rise through the financial industry, offering a close look into the conversations, relationships, and decisions that shaped his legendary career as the CEO of one of the most influential multinational investment management services in the country.” - Mike Krzyzewski, former Duke and USA Men’s Basketball Coach“John has grit, augmented by unconditional family love. John learned to lead from his immigrant parents, football teammates, and unsuspecting mentors who recognized his x-factor. His truth-telling focus on calling things as he sees them, galvanizing to true north in times of crisis and finding his replacement – to leave a place (Morgan Stanley) better than he found it – will forever define his leadership. ‘Up Close and All In’ is a candid read about the evolution of parts of Wall Street over nearly half of the past century.” - Mary Meeker, General Partner / Co-Founder BOND Capital“History is what people do. And few things have shaped American history as the high-powered world of Wall Street finances – or its near-fatal crisis of 2008. Huge personalities, like John Mack, were both architects of the system, and ultimately essential actors in preventing its collapse. Up Close and All In is a brutally honest, yet fascinating and enlightening, narrative of one man’s extraordinary journey into and through that crisis.” -General Stanley McChrystal, U.S. Army Retired“John Mack shares his formidable story in this memoir, which is laced with inspiring advice from his parents, those who’ve worked above him, below him, and, most formidably, the lessons he learned from his experience leading effectively, straightforwardly, and honorably. The reader will quickly learn that Mack is not merely a strong, decisive, successful leader, he also is a deep down good, good man.” - Erskine Bowles, Former White House Chief of Staff

Book SynopsisCritically acclaimed writer and award-winning foreign correspondent, Anthony Loyd is also an ex-heroin addict. Another Bloody Love Letter exposes the thrilling and brutal reality of life as a war journalist - from the climax of war in Kosovo and the reignited battles between Ethiopia and Eritrea, to tracking ambush commanders in Sierra Leone, confronting the danger and confusion of northern Afghanistan at the start of the ''war on terror'', and the harsh realities of life in Iraq during the Second Gulf War. But it is also the very human story of a man fighting to beat a heroin addiction and coming to terms with the death of a father-figure, friend and colleague murdered by the RUF in Sierra Leone, and the death of his mother from a terminal illness at home. Another Bloody Love Letter takes the reader into the mind of a man who has chased war and death for more than half his life, and shows the price he has paid for it. It is a moving and powerful memoir of lovTrade Review'Devastating honesty... Loyd's frankness shows a different kind of courage from that he demonstrates on the battlefield, but it's courage none the less... Loyd shows himself to be the best guide through today's wars working in the English language. He can also be very moving. This is a book about love as much as war.' * The Daily Telegraph *'Two things set Anthony Loyd apart from your average, war-weary combat-zone junkie: a luminous prose style that sometimes borders on the visionary, and a fiercely principled integrity.' * Daily Mail *'Anthony Loyd's style is low-key - philosophical, reflective, melancholic, stoical and beset by internal demons (heroin addiction, the loss of a beloved mentor, the terminal illness of his mother) that gives a still, sad edge to his observation of the tragedies and inanities of conflict. He writes from grit and grief.' * The Times *'This memoir is a great big bloody bong of horror, chaos, gallows humour, loss, boredom and self-loathing, followed by slack-jawed self-medication... All the horror and madness and desperate, thoughtless, random injustice and, even worse, random justice, of war is present and incorrect... For once, the promise of the publisher's blurb - 'Anthony Loyd spares us nothing in this moving and painfully honest memoir' - is more than fulfilled... It isn't perfect. Sometimes, like war, it's messy. But it is moving. And if this is just another vicarious hit of a war correspondent's memories, well, it's seriously good shit, man.' * Independent on Sunday *'Britain's boldest, louchest, war reporter... [A] vivid, hugely compelling memoir... Loyd writes glorious, evocative, laceratingly honest prose rich in gory detail and telling metaphor.' * The Mail on Sunday *'Superb memoir... Scouring honesty... Loyd's own painful honesty... makes this memoir all the more compelling.' * Evening Standard *'Loyd has little time for those without guts... Pitiless on conflict itself - what drives men to it, and the seemingly infinite degree of savagery of which man is capable.' * Metro *'Not content with getting shot at in the world's trouble spots, reporter Anthony Loyd was either using heroin or trying to get off it. His second volume of memoirs isn't as sharp as the first, but it will still have you hooked' * Night & Day *'The most exciting book I have read this year.' * Sunday Herald *'Loyd can... write exceptionally well at times, and with lacerating honesty... There's real substance here, too, and a candour that is shockingly memorable.' * Sunday Times *'[A] powerful and touching memorial... This is not another 'love letter' to conflict; this time it is to his dead friend. It is a recognition that war kills those we love, and that those of us who choose to follow conflict like groupies on its trail cannot escape it in the long run. The writing is as brilliant as ever as Loyd navigates with a sure hand through shocking moments of sudden violence from the Balkans to Iraq and Africa. But it is the search for Schork's killers that is most powerful, a gripping whodunit that ends with another pointless death.' * Observer *'There is much to treasure... Beyond the "gun battle override" and the "Humvee cupolas gunners" we find a brave, lovely man and a talented if over-wrought writer, bursting to be free.' * The Times *'Devastating honesty... Loyd shows himself to be the best guide through today's wars working in the English language. He can be very funny. He can also be very moving.' * Sun Herald, Sydney *'It is a harrowing story. Loyd's writing can be spectacularly florid and the savagery remorseless.' * Courier Mail, Brisbane *'Superb memoir... Loyd and his fellow correspondents survive through a mixture of gallows humour and a drive for the next journalistic high... Loyd's honesty in confronting those truths makes this memoir all the more compelling.' * The Scotsman *'War reporting meets heroin in an engrossing read.' * Age *'Raw, brutally honest commentary that clings on to hope' * Qantas The Australian Way *

It's a skill that you learn along the way."When the skincare company Rodial launched its cult 'snake' serum, the press quickly called the business an 'overnight success'. However, Rodial's founder Maria Hatzistefanis had been toiling for 18 years, building the company from scratch in her bedroom. Now, the beauty boss sets out to demonstrate in this very accessible book that its success stemmed from sheer hard work, tireless efforts and a lot of patience.Fashion-loving Maria set out with a dream to build a beauty business and - despite not excelling at school, and being fired from her first job - she has achieved it. She did it by dreaming big, working hard, surrounding herself with the best, taking risks, creating buzz and building her own personal brand, which is now a favourite with high-profile models and media personalities including Poppy Delevingne, Daisy Lowe and Kylie Jenner.Crucially, she believes anyone can do this and her book, brimming with good sense, great advice, tips and secrets - all presented in an easy, friendly style - shows how.
