Miranda Seymour, Literary Review10 June 1907, Peking. Five cars set off in a desperate race across two continents on the verge of revolution. An Italian prince and his chauffeur, a French racing driver, a conman and various journalists battle over steep mountain ranges and across the arid vastness of the Gobi Desert. The contestants need teams of helpers to drag their primitive cars up narrow gorges, lift them over rough terrain and float them across rivers. Petrol is almost impossible to find, there are barely any roads, armed bandits and wolves lurk in the forests. Updates on their progress, sent by telegram, are eagerly devoured by millions in one of the first ever global news stories. Their destination: Paris. More than its many adventures, the Peking-to-Paris provided the impetus for profound change. The world of 1907 is poised between the old and the new: communist regimes will replace imperial ones in China and Russia; the telegraph is transforming modern communication and the car will soon displace the horse. In this book bestselling author Kassia St Clair traces the fascinating stories of two interlocking races - setting the derring-do (and sometimes cheating) of one of the world's first car races against the backdrop of a larger geopolitical and technological rush to the future, as the rivalry grows between countries and empires, building up to the cataclysmic event that changed everything - the First World War. The Race to the Future is the incredible true story of the quest against the odds that shaped the world we live in today.Trade ReviewKassia St Clair has clearly done her research . . . she tells a thrilling tale . . . Fox Chapel Publishers International Special Transport
Book SynopsisAmong the Dutch transport companies there are several with a world-wide reputation for moving heavy and outsized loads. In this programme by Gertjan Houtman several of the most specialist companies are featured undertaking the transport of some very unusual loads. We see the Sarens group transporting an immense 820 tonne section of a newly built cutter-suction dredger moved over water as well as a port container crane. Mammoet's skill with SPMTs is demonstrated when they move three heavy Smit transformers over water (in force 8 wind!), road (unusually, during the day) and use 2-stack work to cross a railway. It's an operation needing some skillful driving! We also see them place two viaducts, one of which is over a hundred metres long. Saan's special load is a Hercules plane being taken from its museum to painting facilities in Lelystad. It's a night-time operation which involves two transport combinations, three telescopic cranes and various escort vehicles. Liebherr cranes are poised en route to leapfrog the plane over obstacles. Rensink often move huge tanks but now and then, something very different turns up. Like moving a super-luxury houseboat from the boatyard to its moorings in the heart of the city of Deventer. It's not a world-record distance but load dimensions of 18 metres by 6, and a weight of 130 tons all add up to an interesting challenge.

Book SynopsisCelebrate and explore 100 years of MG cars with this impressive volume featuring expert commentary, historical images, period ads, and contemporary photography. For many car enthusiasts, MG is synonymous with “sports car.” It is often credited with igniting a passion for European cars in postwar America at a time when roads were otherwise filled with the lumbering output of Detroit. In MG’s native England, the company’s cars filled roles from family transport to competition driving.MG, as we think of it today, began in the 1920s, but its roots go back even further with a young William Morris. Initially working in the booming bicycle trade, he eventually branched into motorcycle and car repair with the fledgling Morris Garage (hence, MG) in 1907. By the mid 1920s, the successful Morris Garages was in a position to begin manufacture of its own cars under the MG name.MG grew significantly in the years before World War II, bui

Book SynopsisGet Ford's complete story in Ford Tough: 100 Years of Ford Trucks and see why they’ve dominated the truck market, selling 1.5 million trucks every year in the US alone. In July 1917 Ford Motor Company introduced a one-ton chassis for commercial trucks, marking what many historians feel was its official entry into the dedicated truck business. Sure, after-market pickup beds could be added to a Model T car to convert it to a pickup, but with the debut of the rugged Model TT truck chassis, Ford was firmly in the truck market. Eight years later, Ford introduced its first factory-produced pickup, a sturdy half-ton job the public loved. During the century that has passed since that first Ford truck chassis, the F-series has become the best-selling truck in the world, and the best-selling vehicle of any type in America.Ford Tough: 100 Years of Ford Trucks tells the entire Ford truck story froTable of ContentsINTRODUCTION CHAPTER 1 EARLY ATTEMPTS: 1905–1916 CHAPTER 2 FORD ENTERS THE TRUCK MARKET: 1917–1927 CHAPTER 3 FORD EXPANDS: 1928–1942 CHAPTER 4 THE WAR YEARS: 1942–1945 CHAPTER 5 YEARS OF GREATNESS: 1946–1959 CHAPTER 6 FORD EXPANDS THE LINE: 1960–1979 CHAPTER 7 TROUBLED TIMES: 1980–1989 CHAPTER 8 GLORY DAYS: 1990–2008 CHAPTER 9 THE ROAD BACK: 2009–2017 INDEX ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Herridge & Sons Ltd Ferguson T20 in Detail
Book SynopsisHarry Ferguson was a remarkable inventor and a man of vision. Aside from his innovations in mechanized agriculture he designed a four-wheel drive system for road cars and created inspired design solutions to a wealth of engineering problems. Yet he is best remembered for the small, unobtrusive gray tractor that bears his name. Launched in the late 1940s, it rendered its competitors obsolete and provided farmers with a tool that could meet almost all their requirements. The book starts with Harry Fergusons early work on tractors and his development of the system, and his collaboration with Ford in the USA on the development of the Ford 9N tractor. Then comes an in-depth study of the TE20. Later chapters cover the TVO- and diesel-powered versions, American- and French-built Fergusons, industrial models, special-purpose variants, and conversions including four-wheel-drive and high-clearance models. There is an extensive study of the extraordinary range of implements available, with inform

Book SynopsisThis monograph is focused on intercultural issues, particularly in the global auto industry. The foreign direct investments (FDI) reasons are the result of globalization, of the need of growth and of achieving synergies. Most of the professionals consider that FDI is one of the most significant business phenomena in the past decades, but warn about the FDI dangers. The most challenging part of the FDI process is the integration of two entities that present different organizational and national cultures. This monograph emphasizes the relationship between culture and FDI performance in the global auto industry. The main goal of this book is to uncover intercultural issues that managers encounter during the FDI, M&A or global alliances. The expectation of the authors of this monograph is that the conclusions would help forewarn scholars and practitioners of the need to thoroughly understand the cultural issues influencing the global automotive industry. The monograph will be useful for academic researchers, postgraduate students, for MBA/Executive Education and for practitioners.Table of ContentsPreface; Introduction; Automotive industry evolution; Particularities of the European automotive industry; Trends in cross-border alliances and M&As for the European automotive sector; Intercultural issues in global alliances and M&As for the European automotive industry; Conclusion; References; Index.

Island Press Autonorama: The Illusory Promise of High-Tech
Book Synopsis“The foundation has been laid for fully autonomous,” Elon Musk announced in 2016, when he assured the world that Tesla would have a driverless fleet on the road in 2017. “It’s twice as safe as a human, maybe better.” Promises of techno-futuristic driving utopias have been ubiquitous wherever tech companies and carmakers meet. In Autonorama: The Illusory Promise of High-Tech Driving, technology historian Peter Norton argues that driverless cars cannot be the safe, sustainable, and inclusive “mobility solutions” that tech companies and automakers are promising us. The salesmanship behind the driverless future is distracting us from investing in better ways to get around that we can implement now. Unlike autonomous vehicles, these alternatives are inexpensive, safe, sustainable, and inclusive. Norton takes the reader on an engaging ride —from the GM Futurama exhibit to “smart” highways and vehicles—to show how we are once again being sold car dependency in the guise of mobility. He argues that we cannot see what tech companies are selling us except in the light of history. With driverless cars, we’re promised that new technology will solve the problems that car dependency gave us—zero crashes! zero emissions! zero congestion! But these are the same promises that have kept us on a treadmill of car dependency for 80 years. Autonorama is hopeful, advocating for wise, proven, humane mobility that we can invest in now, without waiting for technology that is forever just out of reach. Before intelligent systems, data, and technology can serve us, Norton suggests, we need wisdom. Rachel Carson warned us that when we seek technological solutions instead of ecological balance, we can make our problems worse. With this wisdom, Norton contends, we can meet our mobility needs with what we have right now.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Not If but When Chapter 1: Futurama 1: New Horizons Chapter 2: Futurama 2: Magic Highway, USA Chapter 3: Futurama 3: From CenterCore to Demo ’97 Chapter 4: Futurama 4: Autonorama Chapter 5: Data Don’t Drive Conclusion: We Already Have What We Need Acknowledgments About the Author Endnotes Index

Book SynopsisCarroll Shelby, legendary driving ace, race team owner, and designer of Shelby Cobra, Daytona, and Mustang GT350 classics is revered by automotive enthusiasts, yet little has been written about the last quarter century of Carroll Shelby's life. During that time Chris Theodore, VP at Chrysler and Ford, developed a close personal friendship with Carroll. The Last Shelby Cobra chronicles the development of the many vehicles they worked on together (Viper, Ford GT, Shelby Cobra Concept, Shelby GR1, Shelby GT500 and others).
