  • An Atlas of Extinct Countries

HarperCollins Publishers An Atlas of Extinct Countries

Book SynopsisPrisoners of Geography meets Bill Bryson: a funny, fascinating, beautifully illustrated and timely history of countries that, for myriad and often ludicrous reasons, no longer exist.Countries are just daft stories we tell each other. They're all equally implausible once you get up close'Countries die. Sometimes it's murder, sometimes it's by accident, and sometimes it's because they were so ludicrous they didn't deserve to exist in the first place. Occasionally they explode violently. A few slip away almost unnoticed. Often the cause of death is either got too greedy' or Napoleon turned up'. Now and then they just hold a referendum and vote themselves out of existence. This is an atlas of nations that fell off the map. The polite way of writing an obituary is: dwell on the good bits, gloss over the embarrassing stuff. This book fails to do that. And that is mainly because most of these dead nations (and a lot of the ones that are still alive) are so weird or borderline nonsensical that it's impossible to skip the embarrassing stuff. The life stories of the sadly deceased involve a catalogue of chancers, racists, racist chancers, conmen, madmen, people trying to get out of paying tax, mistakes, lies, stupid schemes and General Idiocy. Because of this and because treating nation states with too much respect is the entire problem with pretty much everything these accounts are not fussed about adding to all the earnest flag saluting in the world, however nice some of the flags are.Trade Review‘This entertaining atlas of nations that fell off the map is a joyously compiled catalogue of chancers, conmen, madmen, mistakes, lies and far fetches schemes that laid waste the genuine hopes of a nation or exploded the overreaching ambitions of bombastic megalomaniac … a riot of revisionist history and political ambition’ Traveller Magazine ‘A whirlwind tour through the pleasingly oddball tales of history's also-rans … If you’re looking for a delightful stocking stuffer for the travel and history aficionado in your life, look no further’ Frommers

  • Islands: Searching for truth on the shoreline

Biteback Publishing Islands: Searching for truth on the shoreline

Book SynopsisNo man is an island, wrote John Donne. BBC Home Editor Mark Easton argues the opposite: that we are all islands, and it is upon the contradictory shoreline where isolation meets connectedness, where 'us' meets 'them', that we find out who we truly are. Suggesting that a continental bias has blinded us, Easton chronicles a sweep of 250 million years of island history: from Pangaea (the supercontinent mother of all islands) to the first intrepid islanders pointing their canoes over the horizon, from exploration to occupation, exploitation to liberation, a hopeful journey to paradise and a chastening reminder of our planet's fragility. But that is only half of this mesmerising book: aided by the muse he names Pangaea, Easton also interweaves reflections on what he calls 'the psychological islands that form the great archipelago of humankind'. Taking readers on an enchanting adventure, he illustrates how understanding islands and island syndrome might help humanity get closer to the truth about itself. Brave, intelligent and haunting, Islands is a deep dive into geography, myth, literature, politics and philosophy that reveals nothing less than a map of the human heart.

  • Little, Brown Book Group Myths of Geography

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisIs geography really destiny? Our maps may no longer be stalked by dragons and monsters, but our perceptions of the world are still shaped by geographic myths. Myths like Europe being the centre of the world. Or that border walls are the solution to migration. Or that Russia is predestined to threaten its neighbours. In his punchy and authoritative new book, Paul Richardson challenges recent popular accounts of geographical determinism and shows that how the world is represented often isn''t how it really is - that the map is not the territory.Along the way we visit some remarkable places: Iceland''s Thingvellir National Park, where you can swim between two continents, and Bir Tawil in North Africa, one of the world''s only territories not claimed by any country. We follow the first train that ran across Eurasia between Yiwu in east China and Barking in east London, and scale the US-Mexico border wall to find out why such fortifications don''t work.Written with verve and full of quotable facts, Myths of Geography is a book that will turn your world upside down.

  • Reaktion Books The Idea of North

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisAs with the compass needle, so people have always been most powerfully attracted northwards; everyone carries within them their own concept of north. "The Idea of North" is a study, ranging widely in time and place, of some of the ways in which these ideas have found expression. Peter Davidson explores the topography of north as represented in images and literature, taking in Netherlandic winter paintings of the Renaissance, German Romantic landscapes, Scandinavian Biedermeyer and twentieth-century topographical painting and printmaking. He examines a bewildering diversity of mythologies and imaginings of north, including The Snow Queen; Scandinavian Sagas; ghost-stories; Moomintrolls, Arctic exploration; the fictitious snowy kingdoms of Zembla and Naboland; Nabokov's nostalgias; Baltic midsummer; rooms in winter light; compasses and star-stones; hoar-frost; and, ice and glass. The book also traces a northward journey, describing northern rural England, industrial sites, and the long emptiness of the borders, Scotland and the Highlands. He looks at the region far north of Scotland, then moves to the Northern Netherlands and Scandinavia to explore their identifiable northernness. The last visited place is Iceland, identified by W. H. Auden and Louis McNeice in 1936 as furthest, most remote, most distant, most northerly'. An engaging meditation on solitude, absence and stillness, "The Idea of North" shows north to be a goal rather than a destination, a place of revelation that is always somewhere ultimate and austere.Trade ReviewThe north is roamed in fascinating, suggestive fashion ... Davidson is as interesting writing about snow sculptures and 17th-century paintings of the Arctic as he is about Auden, and his reading of the imaginary land of Zembla in Nabokov's Pale Fire as an eternal, symbolic north is highly evocative ... a lovely book The Guardian From the Old Norse sagas to the fairytales of Hans Christian Andersen, from the films of Bergman to the paintings of Eric Ravilious, from Nabakov's Zembla to Simon Armitage's Yorkshire, [Davidson] finds that the north is a breeding ground for ghosts, a place of exile and punishment, the antithesis of the human. Yet its bleak landscapes have inspired poetry of great beauty: ice, crystal, diamond and glass all blur in recurring images ... Davidson never lets his learning cloud his enthusiasm for this wide and protean subject and his writing shares the awe of the poets who preceded him on this journey. The Observer Beside being a discriminating critic, Davidson has an arrestingly personal voice ... The Idea of North is one of those books that have you making a long list of references you want to follow The Independent a delightful work ... beautifully written ... an esoteric but important gem; original treasure from the north The Herald (Glasgow) A gifted prose writer Scotland on Sunday There are indeed a lot of norths to cover, and the charm of the book is it exhaustiveness, zooming into a variety of touchstones to show how they've influenced global culture in sly, often surprising ways ... Davidson's north is an enormous, challenging land: humbling, shifting, austere, empty, fragile, desolate, desolating, marginal, authentic - a place, as Davidson perfectly puts it, forever suffused with "absolute, difficult beauty." Ruminator Review (USA) An interesting meditation TLS A truly stunning assessment of the concept of "north" in literature, legend, history and the psyche of "Northern" people ... Davidson writes with an incredible sense of place Aberdeen Evening Express Mesmerising cultural history ... Davidson's style achieves a lyric expression of phrase. In several passages of personal recollection ... he achieves a marvel of descriptiveness that is moving as well as expressive The Scotsman

Book SynopsisHuman history has always been marked by the mobility of people and populations, from the earliest movement of human beings out of Africa to the flows of migrants and refugees today. While mobility is intrinsic to human nature, migration is not always voluntary: it can be the result of free choice, but it can also be forced, in different ways and to varying degrees. In this book, Massimo Livi-Bacci examines migrations past and present with reference to the degree of free choice behind them. The degree can be minimal, as when migration is compelled by war, natural disaster or the actions of a tyrant, but in other cases the decision to migrate can be fully voluntary and deliberate, as when individuals and groups weigh up their options and decide whether to move. Between these two poles there is a continuum of different situations, with gradually increasing or decreasing degrees of freedom and choice. Livi-Bacci explores these variations by focusing on fifteen stories of migration from Antiquity to the present day, ranging from the Greek colonization of the Eastern Mediterranean in the Ancient world to the great migration of millions of people from Europe to the Americas in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Taken together, these stories of human movement shed fresh light on the millennia-long history of migration and its motivations, causes and consequences.Trade Review‘A wide-ranging, erudite and original meditation on the extraordinary and ordinary act of human migration. Livi-Bacci uses analytic rigour and personal stories to counter the “migration crisis” myths of our current age.’Peter Leese, author of Migrant Representations: Life Story, Investigation, PictureTable of ContentsList of IllustrationsIntroductionI.
