Thames & Hudson Ltd Chess and other Games Pieces from Islamic Lands
Book SynopsisAmong the many treasures of The al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait, are hundreds of games pieces dating from the seventh to the nineteenth century CE. Intricately crafted in a rich variety of materials, including ivory, wood, ceramic, glass, jade, and agate, these tiny objects not only mark the evolution of familiar games into their modern forms, but also evoke the imperial palaces, military camps, and herders? tents in which they were played over many centuries. Some of the most beautiful are a famous group of rock-crystal chess pieces that were kept in a monastery church in northern Spain for more than 800 years. They are presented here alongside other spectacular examples, some of which have never before appeared in a publication, including both early figural chess pieces that originated in India and the Sasanian empire and the more abstract forms that later became popular throughout the Islamic world. Other games pieces, such as dice and pachisi sets and an important medieval Arabic treatise on chess, complete the collection. This volume provides the definitive catalogue of this outstanding group of games pieces, some of which scientific testing has dated with precision for the first time, and includes more than 300 striking images.Trade Review'Stunning' - Arab WeeklyTable of ContentsForeword by Sheikh Nasser Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah; Acknowledgments; Introduction; Part One: Early Development of Chess and Backgammon Pieces • Essay: Chess and Backgammon in the Iranian World; Catalogue Section A: Figural Chessmen • Part Two: Abstract Chessmen, Backgammon and Other Games Pieces • Essay: Nishapur and Early Islamic Games Pieces; Catalogue Sections: B) Ivory and Bone; C) Wood and Jet; D) Ceramic; E) Stone; F) Rock Crystal and Other Hardstones; G) Glass; H) Other Games and Related Items • Part Three: Chessmen and Other Games Pieces in Museum and Private Collections

Prestel The Alps: In Panoramic Paintings
Book SynopsisAs downhill skiing became popular in 20th-century Europe, resorts in the Austrian, German, French, and Swiss Alps commissioned paintings of their ski runs to turn into maps. The best of these paintings are now featured in this book showing the artists’ ability to combine technical virtuosity, geographic information, and creative flair. The undoubted master of panoramic map painting is H. C. Berann, and many examples of his works are shown in this beautiful volume, along with a select handful of artists from throughout Europe. Detailing scenes of the Alpine range from Slovenia to France, each of these images was created by hand from aerial photography, mostly shot by the artists on helicopter rides through the mountains. The paintings themselves cleverly combine multiple perspectives so that all trails, terrain, and mountain features are visible. In these exquisite reproductions, the paintings have been stripped of all references to the ski trails, allowing viewers to focus entirely on the beauty of the colours, composition, and detail. A joy to study and savour, these dramatic and vivid paintings recall a time when the human hand was the best means of translating the Alps’ towering beauty to the general public.

Oxford University Press Imagining Jerusalem in the Medieval West
Book SynopsisJerusalem was the object of intense study and devotion throughout the Middle Ages. This collection of essays illuminates ways in which the city was represented by Christians in Western Europe, c. 700-1500. Focusing on maps in manuscripts and early printed books, it also considers views and architectural replicas, and treats depictions of the Temple and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre alongside those of Jerusalem as a whole. Authors draw on new research and a range of disciplinary perspectives to show how such depictions responded to developments in the West, as well as to the shifting political circumstances of Jerusalem and its wider region. One central theme is the relationship between text, image, and manuscript context, including discussion of images as scriptural exegesis and the place of schematic diagrams and plans in the presentation of knowledge. Another is the impact of trends in learning, such as the reception of Jewish scholarship, the move from monastic to university educaTrade Reviewoffers a stimulating technical vade mecum to current research and thinking about the interaction of the visual and the written, and their relationship within the religious culture of the medieval west. It is also very well served by a weight of clear, well-judged black-and-white illustrations and a collection of outstandingly well reproduced colour plates. * C J Tyerman, English Historical Review *Table of ContentsIntroduction ; Exhibition ; Adomnan's Plans in the Context of his Imagining 'the Most Famous City' ; The Exegetical Jerusalem: Maps and Plans for Ezekiel Chapters 40-48 ; The Imaginary Jerusalem of Nicholas of Lyra ; The 'Pictures' of Jerusalem in Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Laud Misc. 156 ; 'Ista est Jerusalem'. Rowman & Littlefield Publishers Art Law
Book SynopsisTrade Review[Jones] offers a good introduction to the subject in a work aimed at art educators, students, gallery owners, curators, museum trustees and professional staff and professional artists themselves…. The work concludes with useful (to US readers) coverage of grants and foundations, returning to the fiduciary issues raised at the start that involve art and museum professionals and trustees. A useful work, then, with application above all in the USA. * s *This comprehensive guide to art law serves multiple audiences from the artist to the art appraiser to the museum professional. In it, Jones provides current information on repatriation disputes along with guidance for the museum professionals tasked with the complexity of understanding ownership, copyright and other issues of intellectual property law. This book is a valuable resource for the museum community. -- Katherine Burton Jones, Director of the Graduate Program in Museum Studies, Harvard Extensions SchoolHere is an invaluable and compelling canvas of insights on the palette of current art law. The book offers a blue chip gallery guide and experience on the current legal labyrinth; it provides historical and contemporary factual narratives that illuminate grey areas and renders in high detail, necessary guiding principles that inform on the full spectrum of inherent challenges and change active on the surface of today’s art scene and populace. -- Patrick McCay, Chair of Fine Arts, Senior Faculty Fellow, New Hampshire Institute of Fine ArtsMichael Jones navigates art world issues of concern, not only to artists, but to collectors mindful of authenticity, museum curators mindful of thefts and forgery, and art writers mindful of copyright and reproduction constraints. Book SynopsisWilliam C. White (1873-1960) had two great careers, first as a missionary in China, and then as a collector and curator of one of the world’s greatest museum collections of Chinese archaeology. In 1897, he sailed to China, a precursor by some years of the great flood of missionaries after the Boxer Rebellion. There he adopted the Chinese way of life – their dress (including hair in a queue), language, and local customs. This account of White’s years in China is fascinating: he worked with lepers, sailed in sampans, organized flood relief, raised a family, dealt with bandits, and exchanged knowledge with scholars – impelled forward by his evangelical faith. In 1909 White was consecrated Bishop in Honan, head of the first mission in China established by the Church of England in Canada. In this post he displayed a genius for organization that resulted in the construction of a church, residence, boys’ and girls’ schools, an orphanage, and

Rowman & Littlefield The NFT Book: Everything You Need to Know about
Book SynopsisNFTs, non-fungible tokens, as collectible, digital, blockchain-secured files became an international sensation in 2020, with the trend in trading them peaking in the fall of 2021. Many sold for millions, and one even sold for $69 million. And yet what exactly are they, and why do they have value? This is the definitive book on NFTs in the story of art and collecting. It is co-authored by an art historian who has written often on the value of art and the history of collecting. NFTs caught Noah Charney’s attention and fascinated him. He, too, felt that initial knee-jerk reaction that so many who hear of a $69 million sale do: how is this digital image different from me clicking “right-click save” on my touchpad and downloading it to my computer? Why would anyone pay $69 million for something that’s not f*cking there? This book provides answers to these questions and far more. Charney sees in NFTs a direct parallel to the history, sociology and psychology of art collecting. He was recently a “normee” but he’s now halfway inside the club—he is also an acknowledged authority on the history of art and collecting. He knows all there is to know about humans collecting things of no practical value but that we just really want. But then he worked for a period with two crypto-related companies, and got to know this world from within. He’s not alone on this ride. The second half of this book is written by someone who knows just about all there is to know about NFTs: Kenny Schachter. Kenny is an artist, collector, curator, professor, columnist and NFT influencer. In fact, he was listed in the fall of 2021 as among the 30 most influential people in the world of NFTs. He even coined (and trademarked) a term, NFTism. While Charney is an art historian considering the NFT phenomenon from the thoughtful but remote perch of his couch, examining NFTs historical and within the context of collecting and the value of art, Kenny has been “in the field” more than anyone, even during the pandemic, zipping from London to Zurich to Art Basel Switzerland to Art Basel Miami. He has his finger on the virtual, digital pulse of this fascinating, bizarre, hugely lucrative phenomenon.Welcome to the definitive book on NFTs.Trade ReviewA great read for people who are looking to learn more about NFTs and are wondering how this breakthrough technology has impacted our world today. -- Alexander Salnikov, co-founder of Rarible

University of Alberta Press George Baxter, Master Colour Printer: Oil-Colour
Book SynopsisGeorge Baxter (1804-1867) was a pioneer in advancing the art of colour printing. A perfectionist, Baxter not only engraved but also examined the prints as they were produced, often providing touch-ups by hand. Baxter's process was, in the end, uneconomical, and he died bankrupt, but no one did more to bring vivid artworks within financial reach of every household, or leave a more colourful legacy for generations of admiring collectors of Victoriana. His oil-coloured prints have given viewers pleasure since they began appearing in the 1830s. Thanks to Donald and Barbara Cameron's generous donation of their Baxter collection in 2010, the Bruce Peel Special Collections & Archives was able to mount a remarkable exhibition.

It describes the publication histories of each edition since the first, offers information about printers, engravers, and subscribers, and provides practical information on price histories, accessibility, and preservation.

Trinity University Press,U.S. The Winds and Words of War: World War I Posters
Book SynopsisCommissioned by the U.S. Committee on Public Information, more than 300 of America's most famous illustrators, cartoonists, designers, and fine artists donated their services to create more than 700 posters in an effort to build patriotism, raise funds for war bonds, encourage enlistment, and increase volunteerism during World War I. The Winds and Words of War is a rich collection of World War I-era posters created between 1916 and 1917 to motivate the country to abandon a position of remoteness and connect with European allies against German aggression and tyranny. These images became a great equalizing force in American culture, causing people of all backgrounds and classes, rural or urban, educated or uneducated, to rally to the cause. Some 450 of these posters are part of the San Antonio Public Library's permanent collection, bequeathed in 1940 by Harry Hertzberg, a Texas state senator and avid memorabilia collector. The posters were created by a group of early twentieth-century American artists, among them Charles Dana Gibson, Howard Chandler Christy, James Montgomery Flagg, Guy Lipscombe, Charles Buckle Falls, Haskell Coffin, and Norman Rockwell. The lithographs' heroic images and patriotic slogans depicted military and civilian effort and sacrifice, aiming to inspire young men and women to enlist, pick up a flag, and support the soldiers and nurses during a trying time in American history. The posters, many of which appeared on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post, are both testaments to the people who volunteered their service and excellent examples of the period's advertising strategies and graphic design.

Grove Press / Atlantic Monthly Press The Louvre: The Many Lives of the World's Most
Book SynopsisAlmost nine million people from all over the world flock to the Louvre in Paris every year to see its incomparable art collection. Yet few, if any, are aware of the remarkable history of that location and of the buildings themselves, and how they chronicle the history of Paris itself-a fascinating story that historian James Gardner elegantly tells for the first time. Before the Louvre was a museum, it was a palace, and before that a fortress. But much earlier still, it was a place called le Louvre for reasons unknown. People had inhabited that spot for more than 6,000 years before King Philippe Auguste of France constructed a fortress there in 1191 to protect against English soldiers stationed in Normandy. Two centuries later, Charles V converted the fortress to one of his numerous royal palaces. After Louis XIV moved the royal residence to Versailles in 1682, the Louvre inherited the royal art collection, which then included the Mona Lisa, given to Francis by Leonardo da Vinci; just over a century later, during the French Revolution, the National Assembly established the Louvre as a museum to display the nation's treasures. Subsequent leaders of France, from Napoleon to Napoleon III to Francois Mitterand, put their stamp on the museum, expanding it into the extraordinary institution it has become. With expert detail and keen admiration, James Gardner links the Louvre's past to its glorious present, and vibrantly portrays how it has been a witness to French history - through the Napoleonic era, the Commune, two World Wars, to this day - and home to a legendary collection whose diverse origins and back stories create a spectacular narrative that rivals the building's legendary stature.Trade ReviewIn his fluent and fact-rich account of the building's many stages James Gardner...deftly combines the niceties of bricks, mortar and changing architectural styles with telling anecdotes and the broader historical context...with his eye for colour as well as architectural detail * Sunday Times *In his courageous and erudite new book, critic James Gardner is bold to take in, and take on, what few mortals have the chance or the stamina to do. Think of reading this book as the full experience you are temporarily denied today, or may never have had the energy to undertake. . .Open the book and enjoy the visit. * Washington Post *Mysterious in effect, the Louvre is delightfully mysterious in history, too, as James Gardner shows in The Louvre . . . Gardner's muscular, impatiently expert prose recalls Robert Hughes in his city books. -- Adam Gopnik * The New Yorker *I hadn't realized just how mythically resonant a museum could be until I read James Gardner's eloquent encomium to the Louvre . . . This history is told with all the great verve, insight, and eye for detail that Mr. Gardner's criticism is noted for . . . [His] passion also invites us to share his affection - and to plan a visit. * Wall Street Journal *With its fast-moving and rich narrative, this truly excellent book needed to be written: the fascinating and turbulent story of the Louvre as a royal palace has been largely eclipsed by its much shorter and more famous life as a museum. Here both parts of its long history have been splendidly recounted. -- Philippe de Montebello, Director Emeritus, The Metropolitan Museum of ArtThe perfect balance of architectural and social history, full of fascinating and unexpected detail, and salted with delightfully sly wit. -- Jacky Colliss Harvey, author of RED: A Natural History of the RedheadJames Gardner makes the walls talk. He traces the many metamorphoses of the Louvre, revealing how from its humble origins as a fortress it has come to occupy the heart of Paris and the centre of French - and indeed world - culture. His remarkable achievement is to show us how the building is every bit as spectacular and as fascinating as the treasures it holds. -- Ross King, author of BRUNELLESCHI'S DOMETable of Contents1: The Origins of the Louvre 2: The Louvre in the Renaissance 3: The Louvre of the Early Bourbons 4: The Louvre and the Sun King 5: The Louvre Abandoned 6: The Louvre and Napoleon 7: The Louvre under the Restoration 8: The Nouveau Louvre of Napoleon III 9: The Louvre in Modern Times 10: The Creation of the Contemporary Louvre

It's an instant classic." ?DON MARRON, Trustee and President Emeritus of the Museum of Modern Art, Chairman and Founder of Lightyear Capital "For anyone who cares for or is just curious about art, Doug Woodham is an astute, lively, and entertaining guide who tells you candidly how the art world works, how it's changing, and how to get engaged. Art Collecting Today presents his wealth of knowledge in a crisp, accessible, and fascinating form." ?MELISSA BERMAN, President and CEO, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors "This thoughtful volume is one of the few that explores the entire ecosystem of the art market?auction houses, art fairs, advisors, galleries, artists, and museums. Woodham aims to make the market more accessible and rightly foregrounds passion, quality, and connoisseurship as the jumping off point for collecting." ?ADAM WEINBERG, Alice Pratt Brown Director, Whitney Museum of American Art"The latest in Allworth's series on the nuts and bolts of the art world, Mr Woodham's book is an elegant, amusing and perceptive guide to a market that is (often) long on hocus-pocus and short on transparency." ?THE ECONOMIST "Several books about the notoriously opaque art market claim to be user-friendly, but Doug Woodham, who was president of Christie's Americas between 2012 and 2014, may be the first to produce a truly hand-holding guide." ?THE FINANCIAL TIMES "Mr. Woodham's book contains startling information about the number of people in the market for the world's most expensive art." ?THE NEW YORK TIMES "Doug Woodham deftly explains how a sixty-billion-dollar marketplace works. It is beautifully written?clear, concise, and free of art-world jargon. A must-read at all levels of collecting." ?VIK MALHOTRA, Chairman of the Americas and Senior Partner, McKinsey and Company "This book is a gem. It is full of great stories and surprises for both specialists and general readers. It is brimming with practical advice for how collectors can best navigate the complex world of modern and contemporary art." ?LAURIE TISCH, Co-chair of the Board of Trustees at the Whitney Museum of American Art, President of the Laurie M.
