Book Synopsis This wise, compassionate book teaches proven cognitive-behavioral strategies for coping with infertility and pregnancy loss. You will learn about common grief experiences that occur with such losses, as well as ways to find perspective and meaning, identify and change unhelpful thoughts, gain acceptance, reconnect with others, and reengage in life. Pregnancy loss can be devastating, regardless of whether it is early or late in pregnancy or in the short period after a baby is born. In many instances, similar emotions are experienced when a couple learns that their fertility treatments were unsuccessful. Here the well-known psychologist Amy Wenzel applies the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy—a thoroughly-researched approach for treating mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and stress-related disorders— to the experience of reproductive loss. She offers strategies for coping with loss and provides a step-by-step guide to reengaging iTable of ContentsAcknowledgments Introduction Normalizing Emotional Experiences Getting By in the First Weeks Getting Involved in Life in the Later Weeks Coping With Disturbing Thoughts and Images of the Loss Coping With Disturbing Thoughts and Images About the Future Interacting With Others Gradual Exposure to Avoided Situations Problem Solving and Decision Making Staying Mindful and Achieving Acceptance Creating a New Normal and Finding Meaning Postscript Appendix: Mindfulness Resources Notes Index About the Author

  • The Roar Behind the Silence: Why kindness,

Pinter & Martin Ltd. The Roar Behind the Silence: Why kindness,

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisFor many years there has been growing concern about the culture of fear that is penetrating maternity services throughout the world, and that the fear felt by maternity care workers is directly and indirectly being transferred to the women and families they serve. The consequences of fear includes increased risk of defensive practice, where the woman and her family become potential enemies to those providing her care. In addition, the prevailing risk management and 'tick box' culture in maternity services encourages maternity workers to give priority to the records instead of the childbearing woman. These factors contribute to the dissatisfaction felt by those using and providing maternity services, and the apparent lack of kindness and respect. There is however increasing evidence that kindness, compassion and mutual respect improves efficiency, effectiveness, experience and staff morale within healthcare settings. The Roar Behind the Silence provides information, inspiration and practical suggestions to support maternity care workers, policy makers, and maternity care funders across the world in their quest to deliver sensitive, compassionate and high quality maternity services. The book highlights examples of good practice, and practical tools for making change happen, using evidence and stories where appropriate. Edited by Sheena Byrom & Soo Downe, with contributions by Hana Ruth Abel, Maria Helena Bastos, Dean Beaumont, Dianne Bowser, Anna Byrom, Sheena Byrom, Penny Campling, Michael Clift, Hannah Dahlen, Raymond de Vries, Soo Downe, Ngai Fen Cheung, Julie Frohlich, Kathryn Guttridge, Jennifer Hall, Shelagh Heneghan, Milli Hill, Billie Hunter, Mavis Kirkham, Mande Limbu, Amali Lokugamage, Kerstin Uvnas Moberg, Mercedes Perez-Botella, Gill Phillips, Elizabeth Prochaska, Progress Theatre Group, Rineke Schram, Anna Ternovszky, Lucie Warren and Robin Youngson.

  • Behavioral Health Services with HighRisk Infants

Oxford University Press Inc Behavioral Health Services with HighRisk Infants

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThere are relatively high rates of complications in the fetal and neonatal periods (1 in 33 fetuses born with birth defects and 1 in 10 preterm births in the US). With advances in maternal-fetal care and growing services and life-extending medical innovations in the neonatal period, more families are presenting to Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) and often for longer lengths of time. The growing recognition of mental health needs of families and providers in fetal care centers, NICUs, and neonatal follow-up programs has led to a quickly increasing presence of behavioral health providers in these settings. Behavioral Health Services with High-Risk Infants & Families is a practical guide for mental health clinicians working in fetal care, NICU, and neonatal follow-up care. The book provides a broad overview of common medical conditions in fetal and NICU settings (e.g., congenital anomalies, premature birth, hypoxic injury in the perinatal period), prevalence, and symptoms of behavioral health challenges, specific considerations for assessment and intervention, and cross-cutting issues to assist the clinician with optimizing behavioral health care integration with mothers, partners, babies, and families. Additionally, information about the provision of psychosocial support and education to staff is also included. The text represents a comprehensive, practical resource for behavioral health clinicians working with pregnant women, partners, infants, families, and providers in perinatal and neonatal intensive care settings. The book features de-identified case examples, trauma-informed care prompts/scripts, specific questions for assessment and intakes, key medical terms, resource guides, and reference lists.Trade ReviewBehavioral Health Services with High-Risk Infants and Families offers clinicians numerous detailed and varied chapters that provide direction and insight on providing behavioral health care for infants and their families across numerous settings serving high-risk infants. This book is particularly beneficial and useful and has substantially informed my practice via chapters grounded with up-to-date research and illustrated with over 100 detailed case studies connecting research to practice. This book will surely be on my shelf for the duration of my career as it provides the reader with insights for integrating into the role of behavioral health clinician for high-risk infants and families, as well as, training and teaching new clinicians to enter the field. * Melissa Maye, PhD, Center for Health Policy and Health Services Research, Henry Ford Health System *This text provides a comprehensive review of the importance of addressing perinatal and infant mental health. The chapters offer a historical perspective, reinforce the argument for thinking about the entire family unit when taking care of the high risk infant (starting prenatally, well through post-partum and post NICU care). With each chapter carefully outlining approach and theories to management of PMADs, as a reader, it makes it easier to take an overwhelming topic such as this (often under-resourced in healthcare settings) and start to make headway in the different settings (e.g. fetal, NICU, post-discharge, etc.). The combination of authors across the disciplines of healthcare only enhance the perspectives and takeaways for each setting. * Dr. Dmitry Dukhovny, MD, MPH, Oregon Health and Science University *Table of ContentsSECTION I: ROLES AND PRACTICE ISSUES 1. Book SynopsisThe influence of the preconception and prenatal period on child development and parent-child relationships.Trade Review"At last, scholars, clinicians, and parents have a compendium that provides solid evidence for the life-long effects of the lived experiences of babies from pre-conception through the post-natal period. Ann Diamond Weinstein strategically brings together research and insights from numerous fields to inform everyone concerned with lifelong mental and physical health. This very readable book will become the reference for anyone concerned with foundations of health, the science of thriving, and resilience over the lifespan." -- Marti Glenn, PhD, Director, Quest Institute "This important work elegantly weaves together a range of perspectives to show how the environment, and in particular traumatic stress, shapes a woman's experience of the childbearing year and that of her developing infant. Weinstein provides abundant evidence to highlight the prenatal period as a critical phase of development, and urges us to cross our artificial disciplinary boundaries to come together in a meaningful way to create nurturing environments for women and children." -- Mickey Sperlich, PhD, MSW, MA, CPM. Assistant Professor, University at Buffalo School of Social Work, and co-author of Survivor Moms "The difference between surviving and thriving begins in the womb. Ann Diamond Weinstein effectively distills essential research, knowledge, and understandings of prenatal origins of postnatal neurobiology, psychology, and relationship dynamics. She compellingly presents the vital importance of gaining expertise to effectively assess high-risk mothers' needs, as well as to compassionately support women and girls and their babies to feel safe, to heal unresolved trauma and loss, and to experience a positive reciprocal mother-baby relationship during pregnancy." -- Wendy Anne McCarty, PhD, RN, Former Program Chair and Faculty, Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology Graduate Programs, Santa Barbara Graduate Institute "Compassionate plea for awareness of potential lifelong, epigenetic, transgenerational effects of adverse maternal bio-psychosocial experience on the neonate's developing autonomic nervous system from the moment of conception. This integration of genomics, physiology, neuroscience, psychology, and humanism reminds healthcare providers that every interaction with a pregnant woman could impact the delicate placental lifeline between a mother and the precious being within her womb." -- Patricia I. Book SynopsisOver the last decade epidemiological studies have suggested that the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke mortality and hypertension is, in part, related to the environment encountered during fetal life. In particular, maternal undernutrition during pregnancy has been highlighted as a causal factor in the long-term programming of disease risk. This book, which brings together the perspectives of leading researchers from Europe, the USA and Australasia, provides the reader with a detailed account of the evidence for and against the nutritional programming of human disease, and considers the biological basis of programming. The book addresses a topic of great current interest and consists of three sections: programming the fetus; programming human disease; and the biological basis of nutritional programming.Trade Review"The book is written in an extremely readable style, which is credit to the many multi-national authors. It has some excellent chapters that raise current issues in modern medicine and public health." • Cambridge University Press Fetal Compromise in Labor

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisSixty years ago, the purpose of introducing electronic fetal heart rate monitoring (EFM) was to reduce the incidence of intrapartum stillbirth. However, by the early 1980s, with falling stillbirth rates, fetal blood sampling had been widely abandoned, as many considered that EFM was sufficient on its own. Unfortunately, while the sensitivity of EFM for the detection of potential fetal compromise is high, specificity is low, and there is a high false positive rate which has been associated with a rising cesarean section rate. The authors suggest that EFM is considered and analyzed as a classic screening test and not a diagnostic test. Furthermore, it requires contextualization with other risk factors to achieve improved performance. A new proposed metric, the Fetal Reserve Index, takes into account additional risk factors and has demonstrated significantly improved performance metrics. It is going through the phases of further development, evaluation, and wider clinical implementation.

Book SynopsisThis book will interest students, scholars, health professionals, administrators, and activists interested in issues surrounding new medical technologies, screening, risk management, pregnancy, disability, and the history and social politics of women's bodies.Trade ReviewIf you are a supporter or a critic of prenatal testing, or, like many people, decidedly ambiguous, there is much that you will learn [from Imperfect Pregnancies] and much that will make you pause and re-examine your own views and knowledge base.—DNA ExchangeAbove all, it is a rational, erudite, thoughtful – and thought-provoking – account of a major change in the experience of pregnancy which has come about largely unnoticed.—British Society for the History of MedicineThe author expertly navigates the reader through history and follows the rise of biomedical technologies that have made prenatal diagnosis possible... This book will benefit students, academics, health professionals and activists interested in issues surrounding new medical technologies, screening, risk management, pregnancy, disability, and the history and social politics of women's bodies.—Elaine Williams, Innovation Lead & Freedom To Speak Up Guardian, Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Nursing TimesThis highly readable book is important for historians of twentieth century medicine, sociologists of reproduction and bioethicists reflecting on "the beginning of life"... In a field of study beset by vehement rhetoric and bigotry, Löwy's reserved and metered style is a blessing, perhaps a precondition for fruitful reflection... Ilana Löwy sets the stage for the bioethical discourse on prenatal diagnosis and choice as a tug of war with three poles—the autonomy of the person as a woman and a mother, the good of the child, and fundamental social values such as respect for human life, reliable medical science and services, justice and solidarity.—Y. M. Barilan, Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel, Medicine, Health Care and PhilosophySince its early stages, prenatal diagnosis has been balancing between the promises of safer pregnancies and healthier babies, and the dangers of its use for eugenic purposes. Ilana Löwy goes beyond this, and eloquently shows the limitations of such a dichotomised analysis . . . Löwy summons a wide range of disciplinary fields to solidly support this historical and comparative analysis of this field of research and medical practice, offering an unbiased yet critical approach.—Mario J.D.S. Santos, Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, Sociology of Health and IllnessLöwy gives a very useful overview of the growth of prenatal diagnostic technologies and the expansion of prenatal diagnosis from a small group of women with at-risk pregnancies to ever wider circles.—Marion Schmidt, Georg August Universität, H-DisabilityAn accomplished piece of scholarship, Imperfect Pregnancies will be necessary reading for students and historians of medicine and medical technology, particularly those interested in a comparative perspective. Lowy's book places current debates about disabilities, reproductive technologies, and abortion in an essential historical context. It encourages scholars to think more about the complicated implications of supposedly progressive medical and technological advances, provides a synthesis of the main developments in biomedical technology in the twentieth century, and paves the way for future specialized research.—Cara Delay, Ph.D., College of Charleston, Journal of the History of Medicine & Allied SciencesTable of ContentsPrefaceAcknowledgmentsIntroduction1. Olivia Gordon decided to find out how, exactly, modern science saved her son’s life. The First Breath explores the female experience of medicine and details the relationship mothers develop with doctors who hold not only life and death in their hands, but also the very possibility of birth. From the dawn of fetal medicine to neonatal surgery and the exploding field of perinatal genetics, The First Breath tells of fear, bravery and love. Olivia Gordon takes the reader behind the closed doors of the fetal and neonatal intensive care units, resuscitation rooms and operating theatres at some of the world’s leading children’s hospitals, unveiling the untold story of how doctors save the sickest babies.Trade ReviewFascinating and moving. -- Adam Kay, Sunday Times bestselling author of This is Going to HurtExcellent . . . Book Synopsis Mood and Anxiety Disorders During Pregnancy and Postpartum earns its important place in the literature by detailing our current understanding of the course, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric illness during pregnancy and postpartum, including breast-feeding—a top priority today because we now know that active maternal psychiatric illness during pregnancy and postpartum can exert long-term negative effects on child development and cause significant morbidity for the mother. In just five concise richly informative chapters, the nine distinguished contributors to Mood and Anxiety Disorders During Pregnancy and Postpartum dispel prevailing beliefs and offer invaluable guidance in treating women during pregnancy and postpartum: • Course of Psychiatric Illness During Pregnancy and the Postpartum Period—Despite the enduring belief that pregnancy is a time of emotional well-being for women, emerging data show that pregnancy is instead a time of increased vulnerability to psychiatric illness.• Diagnosis and Treatment of Mood and Anxiety Disorders During Pregnancy—Though the use of psychotropic medications during pregnancy and postpartum raises concerns, the accumulating data support the use of certain SSRIs/tricyclic antidepressants, especially when balanced against the risk to both mother and child of depression during pregnancy.• Management of Bipolar Disorder During Pregnancy and the Postpartum Period: Weighing the Risks and Benefits—Although the onset of bipolar disorder (BP) tends to occur during women's reproductive years, surprisingly little is known about the impact of the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, postpartum, breast-feeding, and menopause on the course and treatment of bipolar disorder. • Postpartum Mood Disorders—Women experience a dramatic increase in their risk of developing severe psychiatric illness during postpartum for a full year after delivery. Often overlooked, postpartum disorders must be identified and treated as early as possible to reduce the mother's risk for recurrent and treatment-refractory illness and the child's risk for long-term development problems due to the detrimental effect of maternal depression.• Use of Antidepressants and Mood Stabilizers in Breast-feeding Women—This expanded clinical appraisal of the literature on antidepressant and mood stabilizer use in breast-feeding women shows that additional detailed pharmacokinetic investigations are urgently needed to enhance our understanding of nursing infant exposure and the role(s) of pharmacogenomics in determining infant exposure. Meticulously referenced and remarkably succinct, Mood and Anxiety Disorders During Pregnancy and Postpartum provides critical information about the course of illness during pregnancy and postpartum to help guide effective individualized treatment decisions-decisions that are ultimately based on the patient's wishes.Trade ReviewThis series has always been an excellent review of relevant topics in psychiatry, and this book is no exception. In five concise, well-written chapters, the authors offer invaluable guidance in treating women during pregnancy and the post partum period. All clinicians should have a copy of this book on their shelf for easy referral. This would be an excellent addition to any clinician's library. -- William Miles, M.D. * Doody's Health Sciences Book Review Journal *Table of ContentsContributorsIntroduction to the Review of Psychiatry SeriesPrefaceChapter 1. Pinter & Martin Ltd. Childbirth in the Age of Plastics

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisSince the middle of the twentieth century, the development of plastics has been one of the main factors influencing the history of medicine. For example, an anaesthesiologist was formerly an expert in delivering drugs by inhalation. Today, this expert delivers drugs through plastic catheters, in particular via intravenous and epidural routes. Traditionally, the scalpel was the symbol of surgery. Today, surgeons operate on internal organs with flexible plastic endoscopes - without cutting the skin. A typical modern woman in labour has one of her arms connected to a plastic bag through a plastic tube, while a plastic catheter is inserted in the epidural space in her spine. Focusing on obstetrics, this first book about the history of medicine in relation to the plastic revolution asks vital questions about childbirth today - and tomorrow - and demonstrates that the current turning point in the history of childbirth is also a turning point in the history of humanity. Introduced as a medical student to the surgical unit of a Paris hospital in 1949, and still involved in several fields of medicine, Michel Odent has the authority to study contemporary history from this new perspective.Table of Contents1 1. Book Synopsis Managing social relationships for childless couples in pro-natalist societies can be a difficult art to master, and may even become an issue of belonging for both men and women. With ethnographic research gathered from two IVF clinics and in two villages in northwestern Turkey, this book explores infertility and assisted reproductive technologies within a secular Muslim population. Göknar investigates the experience of infertility through various perspectives, such as the importance of having a child for women, the mediating role of religion, the power dynamics in same-gender relationships, and the impact of manhood ideologies on the decision for — or against — having IVF.Trade Review “…an important contribution to the fields of cultural anthropology, medical anthropology, anthropology of reproduction, and gender studies. It also contributes to Middle Eastern studies and anthropology of religion, particularly in terms of the debates of religious rhetoric and scientific technology as intertwined empowerment strategies. Due to its accessible language and the detailed literature review of anthropology of procreation in Turkey, I highly recommend the book for undergraduate courses on anthropology of reproduction in the Middle East as well as anthropology of gender in Turkey.” · Anthropos “Many women in Turkey feel (or are made to feel) that they are not complete or fully adult until they produce a child, preferably a boy. . .This book tells the stories of childless women who resort to IVF at great expense and much suffering in order to achieve that status. Book SynopsisFoetal cardiology has developed dramatically into a subspecialty in the past 25 years. The majority of people examining the foetal heart are not 'experts' in foetal cardiology and therefore find interpreting images, particularly in case of abnormality, rather difficult. This book is designed as a practical guide, to be kept near the ultrasound machine, for all those performing foetal heart scans, but without the expertise of a foetal cardiologist. The aim is to allow the user to recognise the common forms of foetal cardiac abnormality and to appreciate the associated lesions and outcome. The book has a large number of illustrations to enable the reader to visualise the different types of problem and the various forms in which they may manifest. There are relatively few books published in the field of foetal cardiology. Whilst there is a place for large textbooks covering all aspects of foetal cardiology in detail, most people performing the foetal heart scan need an idiot's guide about the normal foetal heart and the common things that go wrong with it. This book is aimed at all sonographers, obstetricians and radiologists performing obstetric ultrasound scans and at paediatric cardiologists, both at consultant and trainee level. Thus, this book should fulfil this unmet need in the market, although it is not designed as a comprehensive reference textbook in foetal cardiology.

Book SynopsisMichel Odent, the leading pioneer for natural childbirth, indicates that the period between conception and a child's first birthday is critical to life-long health. In this prophetic book - first published in 1986 and reproduced here in its original form - he argues that different parts of the 'primal adaptive system' develop, regulate and adjust themselves during foetal life and the time around birth and infancy. 'Everything which happens during this period of dependence on the mother has an influence on this basic state of health, this primal health.' He suggests that the later well-being of adults, their ability to withstand the 'diseases of civilization' such as hypertension, cancer, alcoholism and failures of the immune system resulting in AIDS, allergies and viral diseases, can all be traced back to society's ignorance of the vital importance of the primal period. Since the first edition of this groundbreaking work, research has continued apace, offering further evidence to substantiate Odent's ideas. In the important new "Introduction and Postscript", the author reviews recent developments and relates them to the central themes of Primal Health. This book is essential reading for all who care about the health of our children and the ongoing health of society as a whole.Trade Review'Michel Odent asks the fundamental question that is often avoided: What is health? If you don't find it easy to come up with an answer - and especially if you do - read this book. It is brilliant!' - Sheila Kitzinger, author of Rediscovering Birth and Birth Your Way

Book SynopsisThis book presents the latest evidence-based guidelines for perinatal management and is designed to help obstetricians and neonatologists minimize complications and offer patients the best possible care. Since 1960, there has been a significant increase in basic and clinical investigations on normal and pathological pregnancy in the developed world. This has provided insights into the physiopathology of pregnant women, fetuses and newborns and led to the development of new technologies, bringing about a new medical subspecialty: perinatal medicine. The book is divided into eight main sections: The first examines basic periconceptional care and discusses the ethical aspects of perinatology. The next section focuses on prenatal considerations, such as the nutritional aspects of gestation and puerperium, physical exercise during pregnancy, routine laboratory tests, prenatal care of multiple gestations and the role of the neonatologist in prenatal care. The third and fourth sections then explore fetal evaluation, and clinical intercurrences in pregnancy, respectively. The next section addresses pregnancy complications: prevention, diagnosis and management. The sixth section covers the basic aspects of congenital infections and the seventh examines labor and delivery aspects. Lastly, the final section includes chapters on neonatal assistance. Written by leading experts in obstetrics, neonatology, and perinatology, this thoroughly updated, comprehensive resource reflects the latest information in all areas, including genetics and imaging.Table of ContentsSection 1. Book SynopsisCOVID19 pandemics has had profound consequences on public health and has represented a challenge for several medical specialties. Despite this was underestimated at the beginning of the outbreak, COVID19 is actually impacting on women and children health, as well. The consequences in this field are multifaceted and complex as they span from the occurrence of COVID19 in pregnant patients, to the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 mother-to-child transmission, the occurrence of neonatal COVID and pediatric sequelae. COVID19 and the related public health measures may also have important consequences on psychological well-being and organization of perinatal care as well as they raise relevant ethical issues. All these aspects were at risk to be forgotten within the many others highlighted by the pandemics but are important both for individual care and also from a political point of view and the organization of care. There is a large demand of high-quality education, information and training in this field and we answered that by organising the COVID19 in Pregnancy and Childhood Days: this book represents the hard legacy of this event with the contribution of key opinion leaders in all the aforementioned specialties. Book SynopsisThe subspecialty of Obstetric Medicine sits in a unique intersection of the disciplines of Internal Medicine and Obstetrics. Its focus is in the skilled management of medical problems in pregnancy: from pre-pregnancy optimization to the management of acute and chronic conditions in pregnancy, and in the postpartum period to ensure resolution and safe transition back to the primary care provider. This book will provide novel insights into the management of pregnant women. Clinical pearls will be emphasized, such as illustrating atypical aspects of a presenting symptom/finding, and when a subspecialty referral (or transfer to a high risk centre) must occur for patient safety. This book will combine basic science principles, build on existing guidelines, and provide crucial tips on how to safely manage acute and chronic medical conditions in pregnancy. It is THE book for sub-specialists in Obstetric Medicine.
