Channel View Publications Ltd Understanding Deaf Culture: In Search of Deafhood
Book SynopsisThis book presents a ‘Traveller’s Guide’ to Deaf Culture, starting from the premise that Deaf cultures have an important contribution to make to other academic disciplines, and human lives in general. Within and outside Deaf communities, there is a need for an account of the new concept of Deaf culture, which enables readers to assess its place alongside work on other minority cultures and multilingual discourses. The book aims to assess the concepts of culture, on their own terms and in their many guises and to apply these to Deaf communities. The author illustrates the pitfalls which have been created for those communities by the medical concept of ‘deafness’ and contrasts this with his new concept of “Deafhood”, a process by which every Deaf child, family and adult implicitly explains their existence in the world to themselves and each other.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Glossary of Terms and Abbreviations Introduction 1 Deaf Communities 2 Deafness and Deafhood in Western Civilisation – Towards the Development of a New Conceptual Framework 3 Twentieth Century Discourses 4 Culture – Definitions and Theories 5 Deaf Culture: Discourses and Definitions 6 Researching Deaf Communities – Subaltern Researcher Methodologies 7 The Roots of Deaf Culture: Residential Schools 8 The Roots of Deaf Culture: Deaf Clubs and Deaf Subalterns 9 Subaltern Rebels and Deafhood – National Dimensions 10 Conclusions and Implications 11 Afterword Further Reading Appendices Bibliography Index

OUP USA The Oxford Handbook of Sociolinguistics
Book SynopsisFrom its beginnings in the 1960s, sociolinguistics developed several different subfields with distinct methods and interests: the variationist tradition established by Labov, the anthropological tradition of Hymes, interactional sociolinguistics as developed by Gumperz, and the sociology of language represented by the work of Fishman. All of these areas have seen a great deal of growth in recent decades, and recent studies have led to a more broadly inclusive view of sociolinguistics. Hence there is a need for a handbook that will survey the main areas of the field, point out the lacunae in our existing knowledge base, and provide directions for future research. The Oxford Handbook of Sociolinguistics will differ from existing work in four major respects. First, it will emphasize new methodological developments, particularly the convergence of linguistic anthropology and variationist sociolinguistics. Second, it will include chapters on sociolinguistic developments in areas of the worldTrade Review... an invaluable new contribution to the field of sociolinguists ... While it certainly stands out for its careful organization of abundant material, it must be especially praised for the special attention given to relevant topics that pertain to modern-day social preoccupations. In this sense, it will no doubt inspire those in the field to further their research ... this handbook is a unique and welcomed addition to the Oxford Handbook collection * Pablo Pintado-Casas, LINGUIST *The Oxford Handbook of Sociolinguistics contains many insightful chapters, especially on sociolinguistic variation and on language attitudes and policy * Philipp S Angermeyer, Journal of Sociolinguistics *The...handbook benefits from the fact that all of the authors are outstanding scholars who are extremely well known in their respective areas of expertise... [G]raduate students who are interested in sociolinguistic studies are most likely to benefit from reading this handbook in its entirety, because the editors have taken great care to account for a combination of theoretical and practical insights regarding studies of language in social contexts. * Language *Table of ContentsCONTENTS ; Contributors ; List of Tables ; List of Figures ; Introduction ; Robert Bayley, Richard Cameron, and Ceil Lucas ; Part I. Oxford University Press, USA Sign Language Interpreting and Interpreter Education Directions for Research and Practice Perspectives on Deafness
Book SynopsisMore the 1.46 million people in the United States have hearing losses in sufficient severity to be considered deaf; another 21 million people have other hearing impairments. For many deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, sign language and voice interpreting is essential to their participation in educational programs and their access to public and private services. However, there is less than half the number of interpreters needed to meet the demand, interpreting quality is often variable, and there is a considerable lack of knowledge of factors that contribute to successful interpreting. Perhaps it is not surprising, then, that a study by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) found that 70% of the deaf individuals are dissatisfied with interpreting quality. Because recent legislation in the United States and elsewhere has mandated access to educational, employment, and other contexts for deaf individuals and others with hearing disabilities, there is an increasing need for quality sign language interpreting. It is in education, however, that the need is most pressing, particularly because more than 75% of deaf students now attend regular schools (rather than schools for the deaf), where teachers and classmates are unable to sign for themselves. In the more than 100 interpreter training programs in the U.S. alone, there is a variety of educational models, but little empirical information on how to evaluate them or determine their appropriateness in different interpreting and interpreter education-covering what we know, what we do not know, and what we should know. Several volumes have covered interpreting and interpreter education, there are even some published dissertations that have included a single research study, and a few books have attempted to offer methods for professional interpreters or interpreter educators with nods to existing research. This is the first volume that synthesizes existing work and provides a coherent picture of the field as a whole, including evaluation of the extent to which current practices are supported by validating research. It will be the first comprehensive source, suitable as both a reference book and a textbook for interpreter training programs and a variety of courses on bilingual education, psycholinguistics and translation, and cross-linguistic studies.Table of ContentsAFTERWORD - INTERPRETING AND INTERPRETER EDUCATION: ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND?; PATRICIA SAPERE, DONI LAROCK, CAROL CONVERTINO, LAURENE GALLIMORE, AND PATRICIA LESSARD

Oxford University Press Languages
Book SynopsisHow many languages are there? What differentiates one language from another? Are new languages still being discovered? Why are so many languages disappearing? The diversity of languages today is varied, but it is steadily declining. In this Very Short Introduction, Stephen Anderson answers the above questions by looking at the science behind languages. Considering a wide range of different languages and linguistic examples, he demonstrates how languages are not uniformly distributed around the world; just as some places are more diverse than others in terms of plants and animal species, the same goes for the distribution of languages. Exploring the basis for linguistic classification and raising questions about how we identify a language, as well as considering signed languages as well as spoken, Anderson examines the wider social issues of losing languages, and their impact in terms of the endangerment of cultures and peoples. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Most sign linguistics volumes have focused on one particular issue or theme … within just one sign language … the book is very reasonably priced, and you get quite a lot for your money … I recommend this book to linguists interested in learning more about sign languages. Given the overall theme, the book would be of particular interest to those studying language typology. I would also recommend this book to students who have some background in theoretical linguistics (particularly phonology and syntax), and to anyone who is interested in the nature of modality and human language.' Cambridge University Press The Linguistics of British Sign Language An
Book SynopsisThis is the first detailed explanation of the way British Sign Language works and is the product of many years' experience of research and teaching sign linguistics to deaf and hearing people. It assumes no previous knowledge of linguistics or sign language, and is not structured around traditional headings such as phonology, morphology and syntax.
