Profile What Does Israel Fear from Palestine

Book SynopsisFROM THE ORWELL PRIZE-WINNER AND NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALISTA TLS BOOK OF THE YEAR 2024 'Palestine's greatest prose writer' Observer'A valuable read. As well as talking through the history, Shehadeh is reaching out to Israelis and searching for some kind of dialogue' Armando Iannucci When the state of Israel was formed in 1948, it precipitated the Nakba or 'disaster': the displacement of the Palestine nation, creating fracture-lines which continue to erupt in violent and tragic ways today. In the years that followed, while the Berlin Wall crumbled and South Africa abolished apartheid, the Israeli government rejected every opportunity for reconciliation with Palestine. But Raja Shehadeh, a human rights lawyer and Palestine's greatest living writer, suggests that this does not mean the two nations cannot work together as partners on the road to peace, not genocide. In graceful, devastatingly observed prose, this is a fresh perspective in a time of great need.'Powerful' New Statesman'A

Book SynopsisHenry Kissinger analyses how six extraordinary leaders he has known have shaped their countries and the world''Leaders,'' writes Henry Kissinger in this compelling book, ''think and act at the intersection of two axes: the first, between the past and the future; the second between the abiding values and aspirations of those they lead. They must balance what they know, which is necessarily drawn from the past, with what they intuit about the future, which is inherently conjectural and uncertain. It is this intuitive grasp of direction that enables leaders to set objectives and lay down a strategy.''In Leadership, Kissinger analyses the lives of six extraordinary leaders through the distinctive strategies of statecraft which he believes they embodied. After the Second World War, Konrad Adenauer brought defeated and morally bankrupt Germany back into the community of nations by what Kissinger calls ''the strategy of humility''. Charles de Gaulle set France beside the victorious Allies and renewed its historic grandeur by ''the strategy of will''. During the Cold War, Richard Nixon gave geostrategic advantage to the United States by ''the strategy of equilibrium''. After twenty-five years of conflict, Anwar Sadat brought a vision of peace to the Middle East by a ''strategy of transcendence''. Against the odds, Lee Kwan Yew created a powerhouse city-state, Singapore, by ''the strategy of excellence''. Although when she came to power Britain was known as ''the sick man of Europe'', Margaret Thatcher renewed her country''s morale and international position by ''the strategy of conviction''.To each of these studies, Kissinger brings historical perception, public experience and - because he knew each of their subjects, and participated in many of the events he describes - personal knowledge. The book is enriched by insights and judgements such as only he could make, and concludes with his reflections on world order and the indispensability of leadership today.

Book SynopsisA journey through the most unlikely of gardens: the oases of peace people create in the midst of warIn this millennium, we have become war weary. From Afghanistan to Iraq, from Ukraine to South Sudan and Syria, from Kashmir to the West Bank, conflict is as contagious and poisonous as Japanese knotweed. Living through it are people just like us with ordinary jobs, ordinary pressures and ordinary lives. Against a new landscape of horror and violence it is up to them to maintain a modicum of normality and colour. For some, gardening is the way to achieve this.Working in the world's most dangerous war zones, freelance war correspondent and photographer Lally Snow has often chanced across a very moving sight, a testimony to the triumph of the human spirit in adversity, a celebration of hope and beauty: a war garden. In Kabul, the royal gardens are tended by a centenarian gardener, though the king is long gone; in Camp Bastion, bored soldiers improvise tiny gardens to give themselves a moment's peace; on both sides of the dividing line in Jerusalem families tend groves of olives and raise beautiful plants from the unforgiving, disputed landscape; in Ukraine, families tend their gardens in the middle of a surreal, frozen war.War Gardens is a surprising, tragic and beautiful journey through the darkest places of the modern world, revealing the ways people make time and space for themselves and for nature even in the middle of destruction. Illustrated with Lally Snow's own award-winning photography, this is a book to treasure.

It covers the collapse of power-sharing in May 1974, the secret dialogue with the Provisional IRA during the 1975 ceasefire, the acquiescence of Labour ministers in continuing indefinite direct rule from Westminster, efforts to mitigate conflict through industrial investment, a major shift in security policy emphasizing the police over the army, the adaptation of republicans to the threat of these new measures and their own adoption of a 'Long War' strategy. In so doing, it sheds light on the challenges faced by British ministers, civil servants, soldiers and policemen and the reasons why the conflict lasted so long. It will be a key text for researchers and students of both British and Northern Irish politics.Table of ContentsIntroduction1. Background: British Labour and Northern Ireland 1964-742. Book Synopsis`The overall purpose of human communication is - or should be - reconciliation. It should ultimately serve to lower or remove the walls of misunderstanding which unduly separate us human beings, one from another. . '' Although we have developed the technology to make communication more efficent and to bring people closer together, we have failed to use it to build a true global community. Dr M. Scott Peck believes that if we are to prevent civilization destroying itself, we must urgently rebuild on all levels, local, national and international and that is the first step to spiritual survival. In this radical and challenging book he describes how the communities work, how group action can be developed on the principles of tolerance and love, and how we can start to transform world society into a true community.Trade ReviewI have been touched by this inspiring book. -- Carly Simon

  • Atomic Steppe: How Kazakhstan Gave Up the Bomb

Stanford University Press Atomic Steppe: How Kazakhstan Gave Up the Bomb

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisAtomic Steppe tells the untold true story of how the obscure country of Kazakhstan said no to the most powerful weapons in human history. With the fall of the Soviet Union, the marginalized Central Asian republic suddenly found itself with the world's fourth largest nuclear arsenal on its territory. Would it give up these fire-ready weapons—or try to become a Central Asian North Korea? This book takes us inside Kazakhstan's extraordinary and little-known nuclear history from the Soviet period to the present. For Soviet officials, Kazakhstan's steppe was not an ecological marvel or beloved homeland, but an empty patch of dirt ideal for nuclear testing. Two-headed lambs were just the beginning of the resulting public health disaster for Kazakhstan—compounded, when the Soviet Union collapsed, by the daunting burden of becoming an overnight nuclear power. Equipped with intimate personal perspective and untapped archival resources, Togzhan Kassenova introduces us to the engineers turned diplomats, villagers turned activists, and scientists turned pacifists who worked toward disarmament. With thousands of nuclear weapons still present around the world, the story of how Kazakhs gave up their nuclear inheritance holds urgent lessons for global security.Trade Review"Atomic Steppe is the untold story of how Kazakhstan rid itself of nuclear weapons—a remarkable accomplishment for a new nation. Togzhan Kassenova documents this momentous tale with depth, rigor, and skill. A revelatory, authoritative account of how the nuclear arms race went backwards, for once, making the world safer." —David E. Hoffman, author of The Dead Hand: The Untold Story of the Cold War Arms Race and Its Dangerous Legacy"Togzhan Kassenova's moving Atomic Steppe offers one of the first complete English-language accounts of the devastating but little-known nuclear history of Kazakhstan. The author successfully blends meticulous research with her own family's personal experience." —Sarah Cameron, author of The Hungry Steppe: Famine, Violence, and the Making of Soviet Kazakhstan"In this wonderful book, Togzhan Kassenova provides an intimate account of Kazakhstan's nuclear history and an acute analysis of how it handled its post-Soviet nuclear inheritance. Atomic Steppe is a deeply researched and profoundly affecting book, which everyone concerned about the nuclear state of the world should read." —David J. Holloway, author of Stalin and the Bomb: The Soviet Union and Atomic Energy, 1939-1956"With the sweeping and inspiring Atomic Steppe, Togzhan Kassenova has unearthed insights new even to those of us who had front-row seats to Kazakhstan's nuclear saga, telling a story both accurate and humane. Anyone interested in Eurasia or in health, environmental, and nuclear challenges should read this engrossing book."—William Courtney, former US Ambassador to Kazakhstan"Togzhan Kassenova's remarkable Atomic Steppe offers both a scholarly and a deeply personal view of the damage that more than seventy years of nuclear testing have caused to the soil and the people of this region."—Michael D. Gordin, New York Review of Books"The beauty and magic of this brutalized landscape cannot be erased. Togzhan's book introduces us to the indomitable strength of itspeople, including those victimized by nuclear testing. They and we are in her debt."—Michael Krepon, Arms Control Wonk"Togzhan Kassenova's review of 70 years of Kazakhstan's history in Atomic Steppe is the definitive study of that country's nuclear inheritance and its associated internal politics and international diplomacy."—Laura Kennedy, Foreign Service Journal"Kassenova's masterpiece not only outlines the importance of patience, empathy and deftness in diplomacy, but also helps to recalculate the costs of nuclearization. By compellingly telling Kazakhstan's nuclear story, the author warns against ignoring the most important stakeholders of the nuclear non-proliferation regime: people."—Rabia Akhtar, International Affairs"Atomic Steppe is a book of two halves that have been fused together to create a perfect whole. The first half describes the legacy of Kazakhstan's Soviet nuclear weapon tests. Conversely, the second part explores Kazakhstan's subsequent independence and the rugged pathway towards its emergence as a nuclear-free state in the early 1990s It is completely unique, an absolute must read, and it will become an atomic classic of our time."—Becky Alexis-Martin, The Spokesman"Atomic Steppe has much to inspire in future scholarship. By decentering the narrative from the United States and USSR and focusing on the Kazakh perspective, Kassenova brings attention to stories that have been overshadowed or ignored. In detailing the diplomatic interactions between the US and Kazakhstan, and the rise of the anti-nuclear movement in Kazakhstan, Kassenova clearly demonstrates that the Kazakhs were active agents, rather than passive bystanders, in shaping their future."—Erin Chávez, H-Sci-Med-TechTable of Contents1. 4 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this lucid and timely new book, Jeremy Pressman demonstrates that the default use of military force on both sides of the Arab-Israeli conflict has prevented its peaceful resolution.Whether called deterrence or war, armed struggle or terrorism, the history of the conflict reveals that violence has been counterproductive. Drawing on historical evidence from the 1950s to the present, The sword is not enough pushes back against the dominant belief that military force leads to triumph while negotiations and concessions lead to defeat and further unwelcome challenges. Violence weakens the security situation, bolsters adversaries, and, especially in the case of Palestine, has sabotaged political aims.Studiously impartial and accessibly written, this book shows us that diplomacy is the only answer.Trade Review'This book utterly demolishes the argument that force alone can achieve a political solution to a conflict; and it argues cogently that the reliance on force alone can increase the chances of more “violence, unintended escalation, war, and greater insecurity.” How much better off would we be if these critical lessons were applied by our leaders.'Daniel Kurtzer, S. Daniel Abraham Professor of Middle East Policy Studies, Princeton University and former U.S. Ambassador to Egypt and Israel'Well-argued and convincing, Pressman shows the crucial limitations of war and the reliance on military power. Pressman brilliantly shows that the use of force often leads to counter-reactions, and consequently, is often counter-productive.'Hilde Henriksen Waage, Professor of History, University of Oslo‘A respected expert on the Arab-Israeli conflict, Pressman thoughtfully drives his conclusion home through rich analysis of multiple episodes in the history of the conflict. Illuminating and worth reading.'Shibley Telhami, Anwar Sadat Professor for Peace and Development, University of Maryland'Clear, balanced and informative: a must-read for anyone who cares about the region.'Mira Sucharov, Professor of Political Science, Carleton University, Canada'The book skillfully draws on scholarly research, statements made by Israeli, Palestinian, and other Arab leaders, news reports, and additional primary and secondary sources. Written in a clear and accessible style, The Sword Is Not Enough is a smooth read for those well-versed in the political history of the region, and it is also appropriate for students with basic, but limited, background knowledge of the conflict.'Diana B. Bringing together an eminent group of researchers and activist-scholars, this collection focuses on a number of important questions: Is a commitment to radical nonviolence a necessity for generating revolutionary change in society? Should revolutionary movements abandon their reliance on political violence as a tool of change? What are some of the practical and theoretical challenges of adopting revolutionary nonviolence today? What can we learn from groups, actors and cases of people who have used revolutionary nonviolence to struggle against injustice? 3 in stock

Book SynopsisTerrorism and radicalization came to the forefront of news and politics in the US after the unforgettable attacks of September 11th, 2001. When George W. Bush famously asked Why do they hate us?, the President echoed the confusion, anger and fear felt by millions of Americans, while also creating a politicized discourse that has come to characterize and obscure discussions of both phenomenon in the media.Since then the American public has lived through a number of domestic attacks and threats, and watched international terrorist attacks from afar on television sets and computer screens. The anxiety and misinformation surrounding terrorism and radicalization are perhaps best detected in questions that have continued to recur in the last decade: Are terrorists crazy?; Is there a profile of individuals likely to become terrorists?; Is it possible to prevent radicalization to terrorism? Fortunately, in the two decades since 9/11, a significant body of research has emerged that can help provide definitive answers. As experts in the psychology of radicalization, Sophia Moskalenko and Clark McCauley propose twelve mechanisms that can move individuals, groups, and mass publics from political indifference to sympathy and support for terrorist violence. Radicalization to Terrorism: What Everyone Needs to Know synthesizes original and existing research to answer the questions raised after each new attack, including those committed by radicalized Americans. It offers a rigorously informed overview of the insight that will enable readers to see beyond the relentless new cycle to understand where terrorism comes from and how best to respond to it.Table of ContentsChapter 1. Oxford University Press The Oxford Handbook of Citizenship

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisContrary to predictions that it would become increasingly redundant in a globalizing world, citizenship is back with a vengeance. The Oxford Handbook of Citizenship brings together leading experts in law, philosophy, political science, economics, sociology, and geography to provide a multidisciplinary, comparative discussion of different dimensions of citizenship: as legal status and political membership; as rights and obligations; as identity and belonging; as civic virtues and practices of engagement; and as a discourse of political and social equality or responsibility for a common good. The contributors engage with some of the oldest normative and substantive quandaries in the literature, dilemmas that have renewed salience in today''s political climate. As well as setting an agenda for future theoretical and empirical explorations, this Handbook explores the state of citizenship today in an accessible and engaging manner that will appeal to a wide academic and non-academic audience. Chapters highlight variations in citizenship regimes practiced in different countries, from immigrant states to ''non-western'' contexts, from settler societies to newly independent states, attentive to both migrants and those who never cross an international border. Topics include the ''selling'' of citizenship, multilevel citizenship, in-between statuses, citizenship laws, post-colonial citizenship, the impact of technological change on citizenship, and other cutting-edge issues. This Handbook is the major reference work for those engaged with citizenship from a legal, political, and cultural perspective. Written by the most knowledgeable senior and emerging scholars in their fields, this comprehensive volume offers state-of-the-art analyses of the main challenges and prospects of citizenship in today''s world of increased migration and globalization. Special emphasis is put on the question of whether inclusive and egalitarian citizenship can provide political legitimacy in a turbulent world of exploding social inequality and resurgent populism.Trade ReviewThe definitive source on a critical concept in political and social life. Innovative in its conception and authoritative in its execution. * J.H.H. Weiler, NYU School of Law *This is an invaluable Handbook. No other single volume achieves the theoretical acuity, historical depth, legal grounding, and sociological analysis of citizenship that this book manages to achieve. It is clear, wide ranging, and admirably un-parochial in the range of its references. By focusing on a wide range of citizenship claims, from those of dominant groups seeking to exclude to marginalized groups struggling for legal recognition, the Handbook enlarges our sense of the moral stakes and political struggles at the heart of citizenship. * Pratap Bhanu Mehta, Centre for Policy Research *The diversity of disciplinary perspectives and the combination of both theoretical and empirical approaches … sets The Oxford Handbook of Citizenship apart from other comparable volumes. * Timothy Jacob-Owens, European Journal of Legal Studies *An excellent starting point for the study of some of the main challenges and prospects informing citizenship in today's world. * Zakaria Sajir, Ethnic and Racial Studies *A robust, modern guideline to induce creative and pragmatic discussions about some of the most pressing issues we currently face. * Global Citizenship Review *Table of ContentsPart I Opening Pages 1: Ayelet Shachar, Rainer Bauböck, Irene Bloemraad, and Maarten Vink: Introduction Part II Approaches and Perspectives 2: Ryan Balot: Revisiting the Classical Ideal of Citizenship 3: Alexander Diener: Re-Scaling the Geography of Citizenship 4: Rainer Bauböck: Political Membership and Democratic Boundaries 5: Iseult Honohan: Liberal and Republican Conceptions of Citizenship 6: Chaim Gans: Citizenship and Nationhood 7: David FitzGerald: The History of Racialized Citizenship 8: Leti Volpp: Feminist, Sexual, and Queer Citizenship 9: Kamal Sadiq: Postcolonial Citizenship 10: Don DeVoretz and Nahikari Irastorza: Economic Theories of Citizenship Ascention 11: Maarten Vink: Comparing Citizenship Regimes Part III Membership and Rights 12: David Owen: Citizenship and Human Rights 13: Daniel Weinstock: Citizenship and Cultural Diversity 14: Jo Shaw: Citizenship and the Franchise 15: Linda Bosniak: Status Non-Citizens 16: Liav Orgad: Naturalization 17: Matthew Gibney: Denationalization Part IV Context and Practice 18: Christian Joppke: Citizenship in Immigrant States 19: Oxana Shevel: Citizenship and State Transition 20: Erin Chung: Citizenship in Non-Western Contexts 21: Kirsty Gover: Indigenous Citizenship in Settler States 22: Bryan S. Book SynopsisPrescient and even more relevant than when originally released in 2019, this Memorial Edition of War With Russia ? provides keen perspective to help readers understand the current Ukraine crisis. Are we in a new Cold War with Russia? Does Vladimir Putin really want to destabilize the West? War With Russia? answers these questions and more.America is in a new Cold War with Russia even more dangerous than the one the world barely survived in the twentieth century. The Soviet Union is gone, but the two nuclear superpowers are again locked in political and military confrontations, now from Ukraine to Syria. All of this is exacerbated by Washington’s warlike demonizing of the Kremlin leadership and by Russiagate’s unprecedented allegations. US mainstream media accounts are highly selective and seriously misleading. American “disinformation,” not only Russian, is a growing peril. In War With Russia?, Stephen F. Cohen—the widely acclaimed historian of Soviet and post-Soviet Russia—gives readers a very different, dissenting narrative of this more dangerous new Cold War from its origins in the 1990s, the actual role of Vladimir Putin, and the 2014 Ukrainian crisis to Donald Trump’s election and today’s unprecedented Russiagate allegations.Cohen’s views have made him, it is said, “America’s most controversial Russia expert.” Some say this to denounce him, others to laud him as a bold, highly informed critic of US policies and the dangers they have helped to create.War With Russia? gives readers a chance to decide for themselves who is right: are we living, as Cohen argues, in a time of unprecedented perils at home and abroad?Trade ReviewPraise for War With Russia? “A fantastic new book, which you should read.” —Tucker Carlson “Cohen sees himself as a balancer, getting readers to see the other side. He laments what he terms ‘Russophobia’ among much of the American political class as well as high-profile journalists and academics. … At times, Cohen is a provocateur, but if he compels us to sharpen our analysis by examining a contrarian position, this is not such a bad thing. He often brings to light questions that others have neglected. He is especially adept at taking sometimes unfocused or ideologically eccentric views emanating from Russia and turning them into succinct, declarative statements. This alone is helpful. In our current volatile climate, dissenting voices are necessary to the conversation.”—Military Review journal, review essay by Robert F. Baumann, PhD “The title of Cohen’s book is intended not as a prophecy but a warning. In the overexcited debate about Putin and Trump, Cohen chooses to eschew moderation because he believes that in practice that results in conformity with an anti-Russia narrative that is not only wrong but dangerous. This book will delight his supporters and enrage his opponents, while readers of a moderate persuasion will be able to admire the passion and tenacity of his resistance to the trend towards provoking war with Russia.” —Irish Times, reviewed by Geoffrey Roberts, emeritus professor of history at University College Cork and a member of the Royal Irish Academy "It’s a page-turner."—Consortium News, reviewed by Ann GarrisonPraise for Stephen F. Cohen’s BooksBukharin and The Bolshevik Revolution: A Political Biography “This magnificent book will come to be regarded … as one of the two or three really outstanding studies in the history of the Soviet Union of the past 25 years.”—The New York Review of BooksRethinking the Soviet Experience “[Cohen] clarifies Russian issues better than anyone has in the past decade.”—Cleveland Plain DealerSovieticus: American Perceptions and Soviet Realities “A model of scholarly journalism, sound and wonderfully readable.”—Publishers WeeklyFailed Crusade: America and the Tragedy of Post-Communist Russia “A blistering, brilliant, and deeply felt critique of America’s decade-long daydream of a Russia in transition.”—Kirkus ReviewsThe Victims Return “A striking memoir … Russians today are inheritors of an unspeakably immense crime, and Cohen engages fully — and personally — with the debate on the way they continue to grapple with their Stalinist legacy.”—The New Yorker Soviet Fates and Lost Alternatives “An extraordinarily rich book …an absolutely vital beginning point for anyone interested in a serious study of political and foreign policy developments involving Russia.”—Slavic Review “Cohen’s ideas about Russia, which once got him invited to Camp David to advise a sitting president, now make him the most controversial expert in the field.”—The Chronicle Review

Book SynopsisCompletely revised and updated, this textbook continues to offer the most comprehensive resource available. Concise chapters from a diverse mix of established and emerging global scholars offer accessible, in-depth coverage of the history and theories of international organization and global governance and discussions of the full range of state, intergovernmental, and non-state actors. All chapters have been revised and rewritten to reflect the rapid development of world events, with new chapters added on: Chinese approaches to international organization and global governance The UN System The Global South Sustaining the Peace Queering International Organization and Global Governance Post-colonial Global Governance The Sustainable Development Goals The English School Inequality Migration <Trade ReviewPraise for the Third Edition "The theories and perspectives discussed in International Organization and Global Governance provide students, policy makers, and activists with a historical lens to understand where we all come from, together with a large tapestry of inter-related analytical strands to build a vision and strategies for change towards a new global order based on equity, social justice, peace, security, and sustainability. This book should be on the essential reading list for all students studying IR, Politics, Global Governance, Development Studies, International Political Economy, and International Business." —Faizel Ismail, University of Cape Town "In this volume Weiss and Wilkinson deliver a complete 3,000 piece puzzle of global governance. What is exceptionally valuable is that they offer both the 30,000 foot view of the complex and comprehensive landscape and the details behind each piece of international organization." —Maria Ivanova, Northeastern University "In a world riven with war, reeling from a global pandemic, and facing a climate and ecological emergency, it is ever more important to understand the global institutions and actors seeking to respond. In trying to make sense of an ever more complex governance landscape, the latest edition of International Organization and Global Governance brings together top scholars on a bewildering array of key global challenges to provide a timely, authoritative, and accessible guide to the world we live in." —Peter Newell, University of Sussex "The third edition of this important book is a tour de force. Responding effectively to a range of new governance challenges, the volume offers both accessible discussions of theoretical frameworks and rich empirical accounts of governance actors, mechanisms, and processes. The collection enriches our collective understanding of governance and is a must-read for scholars and students alike." —Laura Shepherd, University of Sydney "Too often, the study of international organizations (IGOs) and global governance has been relegated to lower-class status in the discipline of International Relations (IR)—the terrain where idealists tinker while power politics dominate. Weiss and Wilkinson encourage our discipline to rethink, and deepen, its analysis of the relationship between international organizations (IGOs) and global governance. By transcending the separation and confusion between the way that IGOs and global governance have been conceptualized and studied, this fully updated volume provides scholars and students critical tools to navigate the contemporary global governance puzzle in a time of great turbulence and change." —Jennifer Welsh, McGill University Praise for the Second Edition "International Organization and Global Governance is remarkable not just for the breadth and depth of its coverage, but for its ability to stretch our understandings of both organization and governance. It covers classic theories and established institutions (such as the UN and regional organizations) while illuminating the sometimes obscure powers of nongovernmental and "private" entities (ranging from human rights groups to bond rating agencies). This is an indispensable resource for the field." —Michael Doyle, Columbia University "An indispensable resource for any student of contemporary global affairs. This latest edition of a now-classic volume balances breath of coverage with conceptual depth and sophisticated analysis. The editors here have assembled a top-notch team to write an outstanding collection of insightful, accessible essays that span the enormous range of challenges and changes in global governance today." —Martha Finnemore, George Washington University "The first edition of this volume was a land-mark; this second, much-updated volume is most welcome. The editors and authors are all leading authorities on their topics. Highly recommended." —David Malone, United Nations University "In a fracturing world, international cooperation is looking fragile. This book provides a useful overview of how international organizations can help, where they fail, and with what consequences." —Professor Ngaire Woods, University of Oxford Table of ContentsPart I: Introduction From International Organization to Global Governance Thomas G. Book SynopsisFrom the former Prime Minister and most decorated solder in Israel's history, this is essential reading to understand today's Israel-Palestine conflict and the precarious path to a two-state solution.'There is scarcely one of Israel's security or military operations of the past four decades in which Barak has not been involved' Jewish ChronicleIn the summer of 2000, Ehud Barak set himself a challenge as daunting as any he had faced on the battlefield: to secure a final peace with the Palestinians. He would propose two states for two peoples, with a shared capital in Jerusalem. He knew the risks of failure. But he also knew the risks of not trying: letting slip perhaps the last chance for a generation to secure genuine peace. It was a moment of truth. It was one of many in a life intertwined, from the start, with that of Israel. Born on a kibbutz, Barak became commander of Israel's elite special forces, then army Chief of Staff, and ultimately, Prime Minister. My Country, My Life tells the unvarnished story of his - and his country's - first seven decades; of its major successes, but also its setbacks and misjudgments. He offers candid assessments of his fellow Israeli politicians, of the American administrations with which he worked. Drawing on his experiences as a military and political leader, he sounds a powerful warning: Israel is at a crossroads, threatened by events beyond its borders and by divisions within. The two-state solution is more urgent than ever, not just for the Palestinians, but for the existential interests of Israel itself.Trade ReviewA riveting memoir of war and almost-peace by Ehud Barak, one of Israel's wisest modern leaders. Barak describes his missions for Israel's toughest commando unit with the passion of a born soldier. The most poignant passages of this book describe Barak's unsuccessful struggle as prime minister to hammer out a peace deal with the PLO's Yasser Arafat—in what proved to be one of the Middle East's tragic 'near misses.' Barak's love for Israel animates every page of this book. -- David Ignatius, columnist for the Washington Post and bestselling thriller writerThere is scarcely one of Israel's security or military operations of the past four decades in which Barak has not been involved and he relates them well, illumining the doubts, anxieties and hard decisions that leadership demands * Jewish Chronicle *My Country, My Life is a rich and engrossing memoir from one of Israel’s premier political leaders, who went from being a decorated soldier to a staunch advocate for peace. Ehud Barak’s love of Israel pours through every page of this book, which makes his warnings about the country’s future as a Jewish and democratic state all the more powerful, urgent, and real. -- Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of StateThe life of Ehud Barak is the story of a warrior who became a statesman. My Country, My Life, an aptly titled memoir, is honest, captivating, and moving. -- Dr. Henry Kissinger, former U.S. Secretary of StateEhud Barak's My Country, My Life is a powerful, must-read for anyone interested in peace in the Middle East and, indeed, anywhere in the world. As a journalist who has covered the peace process for many years, I thought I was pretty well-informed. But I must say: I learned a great deal by reading this beautifully written and very candid memoir. -- Wolf Blitzer, CNN

Book SynopsisBy challenging more common analyses that point to the existence of a "post-conflict scenario" in Colombia and those that resist the narrative of "success", both of which operate within the logic of presence/absence of violence, this book proposes instead that we think of "post-conflict" in terms of the transformation of the rules on the use of violence. The analysis unfolds in two parts: the first explores the conditions of possibility of the Colombian “success story” and the web of criteria legitimizing the “success”, as well as the silencing mechanisms allowing for Colombia to circulate internationally as a formula to be replicated in other parts of the world; the second, focuses on the historicization of the mechanisms through which new rules are transmitted among the professionals of the public force, specifically the transformations of military schools and training centers in Colombia from times of “war” to “peace”. The author argues that key to this transformation is a unique discursive articulation around the “military professional” which slides from “citizen-soldier” to “expert-soldier”. Table of Contents

Let her sleep, for when she wakes she will shake the world.’ In 2014, President Xi Jinping triumphantly declared that the lion had awoken. From holding its ground in trade wars with the US, to presenting itself as a world leader in the fight against climate change, a newly confident China is flexing its economic muscles for strategic ends. With the Belt and Road initiative, billed as a new Silk Road for the 21st Century, China is set to extend its influence throughout Eurasia and across the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean. Book SynopsisGlobal politics in the twenty-first century is complicated by dense economic interdependence, rapid technological innovation, and fierce security competition. How should governments formulate grand strategy in this complex environment? Many strategists look to deterrence as the answer, but how much can we expect of deterrence? Classical deterrence theory developed in response to the nuclear threats of the Cold War, but strategists since have applied it to a variety of threats in the land, sea, air, space, and cyber domains. If war is the continuation of politics by other means, then the diversity of technologies in modern war suggests a diversity of political effects. Some military forces or postures are most useful for winning various kinds of wars. Others are effective for warning adversaries of consequences or demonstrating resolve. Still others may accomplish these goals at lower political cost, or with greater strategic stability. Deterrence is not a simple strategy, therefore, bu

Book SynopsisFor decades, scholars have asserted that gender matters when it comes to domestic and international politics and that gender equality means more than the rights and inclusion of women in the political sphere. Yet the existing research on gender equality and violent political conflict tends to equate and conflate gender equality with observable indicators related to women''s inclusion in formal politics. Consequently, this conceptual problem has impeded efforts to theorize and empirically examine the connection between gender equality, women''s status, and political violence. In Positioning Women in Conflict Studies, Sabrina Karim and Daniel W. Hill, Jr., develop an original framework to study the condition of women in peace and conflict that avoids conflating gender equality with other terms. Karim and Hill re-evaluate the literature on gender, international politics, and conflict to reveal that the term gender equality is often used to refer to four distinct concepts: women''s inclusion, women''s rights, harm to women, and beliefs about women''s roles. They develop original measures for each of these concepts and examine their impact on inter-state war onset, intra-state conflict onset, state repression/human rights violations, and terrorism. The results suggest that the relationships between women''s status and political violence are not uniform and vary across different aspects of women''s status as well as different types of political violence. Overall, Positioning Women in Conflict Studies demonstrates how the conceptualization and measurement of gender equality and women''s status is critical in understanding how to reduce political violence globally.

Book SynopsisA three-thousand year history of the world that examines the causes of war and the search for peaceIn three thousand years of history, China has spent at least eleven centuries at war. The Roman Empire was in conflict during at least 50 per cent of its lifetime. Since 1776, the United States has spent over one hundred years at war. The dream of peace has been universal in the history of humanity. So why have we so rarely been able to achieve it? In A Political History of the World, Jonathan Holslag has produced a sweeping history of the world, from the Iron Age to the present, that investigates the causes of conflict between empires, nations and peoples and the attempts at diplomacy and cosmopolitanism. A birds-eye view of three thousand years of history, the book illuminates the forces shaping world politics from Ancient Egypt to the Han Dynasty, the Pax Romana to the rise of Islam, the Peace of Westphalia to the creation of the United Nations.

Book SynopsisEurope has suffered a decade of crises, with sovereign-debt troubles leading to austerity policies that exacerbated divisions inside member states and between them. Thereafter the Union was confronted with the challenges posed by a revanchist Russia in Ukraine and by a surge in migration from the Middle East and other conflict zones. The June 2016 UK vote to leave the Union threatened further damage to an institution that acknowledges it has failed to punch its weight in the spheres of foreign, defence and security policy. While that is a chronic shortcoming, its impact is becoming more acute as economic power moves East and Europe can no longer count on the steadfast support and leadership of the United States. The costs of Europe's failure to achieve strategic coherence and effect are steadily rising. This Adelphi book addresses the consequences of Europe's multiple crises for its standing as a strategic actor, acknowledging its unique character and capabilities. It argues that stTable of ContentsIntroduction 1. The context and anatomy of crises 2. The internal consequences of crises 3. Europe, the EU and foreign affairs 4. Book SynopsisThis book examines the development of cooperation between the EU and NATO, two key non-state actors in the European security architecture. The work examines the relationship between the EU and NATO by focusing on the perspective of member states. Highlighting the relevance of member states' role in shaping EU-NATO relations, it conceptualises interorganisational cooperation and develops a typology of member states based on four types: advocates, blockers, balancers and neutrals. To apply this typology and analyse member states' specific roles, the analysis considers their foreign and security policy orientations, bilateral relationships with other member states, and contributions to both military operations, and division of labour between the two organisations. The book also examines states' use of political strategies -- such as forum-shopping, hostage-taking and brokering -- that influence the design, evolution and practicalities of cooperation between the EU and NATO.Trade Review'The EU and NATO are the two ‘big beasts’ of Europe’s international relations but the systematic study of their interorganisational relationship has been relatively neglected. This volume provides overdue insight into the puzzle as to why the EU-NATO interrelationship has been troubled. Ewers-Peters, by focusing on the role of states that share membership of both organisations, provides us with an empirically-rich and comprehensive analysis that significantly enhances our understanding of the EU-NATO dynamic.'-- Richard G. Whitman, University of Kent, UK'Understanding EU-NATO Cooperation: How Member States Matter offers the reader a systemic account of how member states shape EU-NATO cooperation. It enriches the EU-NATO literature, and the interorganisational cooperation literature more broadly, through its detailed account of an understudied question, namely, the ways in which member states can circumvent legal and institutional barriers to shape EU-NATO cooperation. In showing how member states contribute to the dysfunctionality of EU-NATO relations, Ewers-Peters' book will be of considerable interest to scholars of European security.'-- Jocelyn Mawdsley, Newcastle University, UK'NATO and the EU have many common members and share similar goals, yet they often act as if they are on different planets. Understanding why this is so means knowing more about how member states shape each organization’s priorities. Nele Marianne Ewers-Peters breaks new ground with her insights into the crucial role of individual member states in NATO-EU dynamics. A valuable book for practitioners and theorists alike.'-- Daniel S. Hamilton, Johns Hopkins University and Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, USA'Most analyses on the troubled relationship between NATO and the EU focus their attention on a few actors whose frozen positions arguably stand in the way of a constructive and cooperative future. In this well-crafted monograph, Nele Marianne Ewers-Peters adds depth and nuance to this well-trodden path by setting up a highly innovative framework for understanding all member states’ positions on the relationship. The book elegantly draws on interorganizational theory and identity perspectives to add a much needed conceptual and theoretical perspective for understanding not only the limitations, but also the opportunities in the NATO-EU relationship.'-- Trine Flockhart, University of Southern Denmark'European security has been shaped since the end of the Cold War by two international bodies: the EU and NATO. Despite their seemingly overlapping objectives, an efficient and effective relationship has yet to develop between the two organisations. The reason may seem obvious – that NATO and the EU have overlapping but differentiated memberships. Obvious, it may be, but until now the implications of differentiation have not been fully explored. Nele Ewers-Peters takes a comprehensive look at the member countries of the EU and NATO – how some states facilitate inter-organisational cooperation and how some block it. The analysis is sustained and forensic. We may bemoan the NATO-EU relationship, but we no longer have the excuse that we don’t understand why it remains so dysfunctional.' - Mark Webber, University of Birmingham, UKTable of Contents1. Margot Tudor identifies the unexplored colonial structures, racial prejudices, and organisational politics that shaped UN peacekeeping practices during the instability of decolonisation.Trade Review'From the Sinai to Gaza, from the Congo to West Papua, Margot Tudor's Blue Helmet Bureaucrats exposes how United Nations peacekeepers inherited the practices and mindsets of colonial administration. Tudor's crisp account of the reality of liberal internationalism is revelatory for students of the United Nations and decolonization.' Timothy Nunan, University of Regensburg'Margot Tudor is among the brightest of a new generation of historians illuminating a lost international past - in Blue Helmet Bureaucrats she sets her clear eyed vision on the problematic politics of UN peacekeeping in the post-Second World War. This thick history sets the complex truth above all else; we see the legacies of colonialism, the limits of good intentions, and the real humans involved.' Glenda Sluga, European University Institute'Margot Tudor's account of the early years of UN peacekeeping reveals the power of mid-level UN intermediaries to limit the sovereignty of smaller postcolonial states, thus ensuring their alliance with a liberal internationalist order. Blue Helmet Bureaucrats provides a meticulously researched historical reckoning with the imperial origins of liberal internationalism.' Book SynopsisThis book explores the changing tactics, technologies and terrains of twenty-first century war.It argues that the world in 2049 is unlikely to look like the climate change/artificial intelligence (AI) dystopia depicted in Blade Runner 2049, but nor will it be a world where conflict and war has been transformed by a civilising process' that eradicates violence and conflict from the human condition. 2049 is also the year that the US Department of Defense has suggested China will become a world-shaping military power. All states will be engaged in arms races' across a variety of new tools and technologiesfrom drones, robotics, AI and quantum computingthat will transform politics, economy, society and war.Drawing on thinkers such as Zygmunt Bauman and Paul Virilio, the book suggests that future war will be shaped by three broad tendencies that include a broad range of tactics, technologies and trends; the impure, the granular and the machinic. Through discussions ofTrade Review'Theorising Future Conflict takes us on a thrilling journey into the cyberpunk politics of war and security that the near future may well have in store. Weaving a path amid sci-fi dystopias, liberal theory, and war studies, Mark Lacy offers us a sobering assessment of how global security (and society) may be transformed this side of 2049.
