Books by Kenneth Grahame

Portrait of Kenneth Grahame

Kenneth Grahame, a celebrated Scottish author of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, is best known for his timeless classic The Wind in the Willows. His writing captures the charm of rural England and the gentle humour of anthropomorphic characters, weaving together adventure, friendship, and nostalgia in a way that continues to delight readers of all ages.

Beyond his most famous tale, Grahame's earlier works, including The Golden Age and Dream Days, reveal his wistful reflections on childhood and the imagination's power to transform the everyday. His prose, rich with lyrical warmth and quiet wit, remains an enduring celebration of innocence, nature, and the enduring spirit of home.

Book SynopsisThis classic of the English countryside, . first published in 1908, is a favourite with readers of all ages. As the late Margery Fisher wrote, 'Adults are sadly aware of the figure of Grahame himself, languishing in a city office and longing for the river: children respond to the fun, the anarchy of Toad and the entrancing detail as Grahame's son Alastair must have done when he listened to the bedside stories that became a book. ' The author invited Arthur Rackham to illustrate his book, but Rackham said he was too busy - a decision he was happily able to reconsider in 1936 when he was approached by the American publisher of the Limited Editions Club. The project, which he carried out with love and great care for the authenticity of detail, was his last: the drawings appeared first in the USA in 1939 and in Britian in 1950.

But it is a world where the motor-car is about to wreck the gipsy caravan, the revolutionaries in the Wild Wood are threatening the social fabric, the god Pan is abroad, and the warm seductive whispers of the south are drifting into the English lanes. An international children''s classic, The Wind in the Willows grew from the author''s letters to his young son, yet it is concerned almost exclusively with adult themes: fear of radical changes in political, social, and economic power. Mole''s acceptance into the conservative world of the River Bank, and Toad''s wild attempts to escape from it, are narrated in virtuoso language ranging from lively parody to elaborate fin-de-siècle mysticism. Tired of spring cleaning, Mole ventures above ground into the warm sunshine, and happens upon his friend Ratty.
