Book SynopsisThe best-selling author of The River returns with a heart-racing thriller about a young man escaping his own grief and an elite fishing lodge in Colorado hiding a plot of shocking menace.Trade ReviewExtraordinary: a unique blend of thriller, post-Covid dystopia and paean to the healing properties of nature. * Guardian *Exceptionally good... A frighteningly plausible nightmare. * OBSERVER, Thriller of the month *Peter Heller's thrillers unfurl like campfire yarns. * New York Times *Moves inexorably from natural elegy to a fast-paced and page-turning what-the-hell-is-going-on? A chilling reminder of the dangers that might lie in wait for us all. * Minneapolis Star Tribune *A modern master of the wilderness thriller. * Crime Reads *The Guide is a glorious getaway in every sense, a wild wilderness trip as well as a suspenseful journey to solve a chilling mystery. * BookPage *Peter Heller is the poet laureate of the literary thriller, and The Guide offers further proof for the case. • The Fly Tyers' Art: 50 World-Famous Tyers Tie

Skyhorse Publishing The Fly Tyers' Art: 50 World-Famous Tyers Tie

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Fly As An Art Form The purpose of this book is twofold: to trace the evolution of realistic fly tying and to feature the creations of the world’s most-skilled practitioners of this art form. Some of these contemporary artisans concentrate on imitations of aquatic insects most likely seen by fly fishers. Their focus is on mayflies, caddisflies and stoneflies. For others, the sky is the limit and they tie replicas of anything, including praying mantis, crabs, bees, hornets, ants, spiders, and fish. Theirs is a small, but expanding, cadre of enthusiastic tyers whose work will astonish even those who have never tied a fly. The realism of their fly patterns, whether an art form destined for framed presentation, or a working fly intended for the end of a fly leader, will amaze.

Book SynopsisDo you want to learn more efficient and effective methods for fusion fly tying? Are you wondering which types of synthetic fly work best for which fish and where? If so, this guide is for you. Fusion Fly Tying highlights 35 of Senyo’s signature and tried-and-true steelhead flies used throughout North America. They are suitable for many types of fish, including Atlantic salmon, bass, and trout. Fusion Fish Tying includes step-by-step and high resolution photography that is current and easily applied. Over the past seven years, Greg Senyo built a massive customer base with his company Steelhead Alley Outfitters. The supply of Steelhead Alley Outfitter’s resources doesn’t quite match the demand. To address this, Senyo wrote Fusion Fly Tying. This book will teach the reader how to work with synthetic materials, especially shanks, fish skulls and fish masks, heavy wire, new age flash, and synthetic hackles and hair. It smoothly combines classic techniques with modern technology to make fishing more enjoyable and efficient. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for fishermen. Our books for anglers include titles that focus on fly fishing, bait fishing, fly-casting, spin casting, deep sea fishing, and surf fishing. Our books offer both practical advice on tackle, techniques, knots, and more, as well as lyrical prose on fishing for bass, trout, salmon, crappie, baitfish, catfish, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.Trade Review“His creations are deceptively simple masterpieces that fuse tradition with progressive genius. . . . [Senyo] has adapted an amazing approach to presenting the fly for steelhead and salmon from the Great Lakes to any destination in the entire world where you may find such fish.” —Matthew Supinski, author of Steelhead Dreams: The Theory, Method, Science and Madness of Steelhead Fly Fishing “In Greg’s patterns there’s color, flash, and vision. Moreover, there’s a completeness, a unity that comes from an attentiveness to detail that . . . transcends their role as fish-catching tools.” —Dave Karczynski, MidCurrent

Book SynopsisShortlisted for the Richard Jefferies Award 2022Growing up in Shetland with its myriad lochs and burns, Malachy Tallack and his brother would roam the island in search of trout, and in so doing discovered a sense of freedom, of wonder - and an abiding passion. But why is it that fishing - or the mere contemplation of catching a fish - can be so thrilling and so captivating? Why is it that time spent beside water can be imprinted so sharply in memory? Why is it that what seems a simple act - of casting a line, waiting and hoping - can leave so much room for mystery? Here award-winning author and singer-songwriter Malachy Tallack tells the story of his own infatuation with fishing, a pastime that has brought him joy (and frustration) since early childhood. And in bringing together memoir, nature writing and reflections on culture and history, he explores why angling means so much to so many.Beautifully written and hugely engaging, it is a book about attention, about nature, and that sense of wonder; it is about a way of engaging with the world, of reaching out - and feeling it reach back.Trade ReviewMalachy Tallack writes as deftly as he casts a fly. This book is illuminated by water, but also by philosophy, experience and a profound sympathy for the natural world. A delight. -- LUKE JENNINGS, author of the Killing Eve novelsA love letter to still, dark lochs and sparkling trout rivers; an account of a fascination and that deep-down draw we feel towards the water's edge. Tallack's beautiful book is full of interest, passion, and rich, buttery description. Wade into it, and let it flow through you. -- CAL FLYN, author of Islands of AbandonmentA masterfully told fisherman's tale, which gets closer than most to grasping that slippery thing beyond the fish itself: the reason we are drawn to water, and what fishing can teach us. -- JEREMY WADE, author and presenter of 'River Monsters'A memoir with a difference, beautifully evocative, suffused with the calm of many days spent fishing and thinking in tranquillity. The perfect gift for anglers everywhere. -- GAVIN FRANCIS, author of Island DreamsA beautifully meandering meditation on the mysterious allure of fishing. From windswept lochs to sluggish canals, Malachy Tallack grapples with big ethical issues about our place in the natural world as deftly as he does the fish. -- LEE SCHOFIELD, author of Wild Fell…

Book SynopsisThis book is about the author's life motivated by two pursuits: medicine, his profession and flyfishing, his favourite recreation. Each in their own way has provided him with challenges, enjoyment and fulfilment. The book recounts the author's experiences as a wartime school boy, post-war medical student, army doctor in Ghana, and medical research worker at Hammersmith Hospital, London, the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, the Methodist Hospital, Houston and McGill University, Montreal. It describes his drastic change in mid-career from gastroenterology to clinical lipidology and his subsequent efforts to promote the lipid hypothesis of atherosclerosis in the face of entrenched opposition from some members of the cardiological establishment. Among his achievements was the introduction of plasmapheresis to prolong the lives of severely affected patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH), a hitherto fatal disorder, and he was among the first to describe the efficacy of statins in FH patients in the UK. The book also describes his leisure time activities including running in the London and New York marathons, and the hazards thereof, and his flyfishing expeditions to catch Atlantic salmon in Scotland and Russia, bonefish in the Bahamas and brown trout in England. The narrative covers the period from the Second World War to the present day, during which there have been dramatic changes in medical practice and social attitudes. It reflects the author's experiences during the latter half of the 20th century, stretching from the early days of penicillin to the introduction of statins, and it concludes with his up to date appraisal of recent and exciting advances in cholesterol-lowering therapy for cardiovascular disease.
