Book SynopsisTrade Review“Well done! What a useful children’s book on the subject of duck traits themselves, not only for duck-loving readers but others. Importantly, its pages reveal through the early life of a wood duckling some of life’s best practices for young readers to follow—determination, focus, persistence, and awareness, especially. Nature teaches us things, and this book is a very nice, early age primer in that regard!” —Clifton A. Brown, Executive Director, Maryland Wood Duck Initiative “This sweet story begins with Mama duck watching 10 eggs hatch. Nine of the fluffy little ones drop from the tree nest to the water. But the last one is afraid, and it takes coaxing by mother and siblings before Duckling finds the courage to take the plunge and join the rest of the family as they swim away. A one-page author’s note explains wood duck behavior...inspired by a visit to the Bell Museum of Natural History...a counting book and a confidence builder for young children who need to take leaps in their own lives.” —Mary Ann Grossman, TwinCities.com

Book Synopsis“An amusing friendship story that's just right for reading aloud.” —Publishers Weekly “Everyone’s indeed a winner here.” —Kirkus Reviews “A sure bet for read-aloud fun.” —Booklist Toy Story meets Cars in this sweet and relatable story that explores universal themes of friendship and growing up.Look out, world! There’s a shiny, new Bike in town. But what does this mean for rusty, old Trike? Trike is a rusty little fellow, a trusty little fellow, on three worn-down wheels. Now that Lulu has outgrown him, he’s lonely in the garage. But then a newcomer shows up. He’s shiny and big and has FOUR wheels. It’s BIKE! Gulp. Trike worries that Bike won’t know how to take care of Lulu. Bike won’t listen, and challenges Trike to a race. It’s ON! Who will win?Trade ReviewA battered old tricycle and a new bike make friends—but not without hitting a few bumps in the road. Lulu and Trike have been together for years…but Lulu keeps getting bigger, and one day a brand-new birthday bike sails into the garage: "Watch this trick," he crows, popping a wheelie and zooming through Hula Hoop. Ignoring Trike's cautions about safety ("Aw, back off, old-timer") Bike proposes a riderless race to the nearby woods. And so they're off, with Trike struggling to keep up ("You can DO this," he tells himself, "for Lulu and the way the two of us flew"). Then, seeing Bike careening heedlessly toward a cliff, Trike selflessly puts on an extra burst of speed to head off disaster with a mighty collision. "I guess I have a lot to learn," says penitent Bike, and back to the garage they go, "two winners on wheels." Verdick tells the tale in a characteristic mix of exuberant sound effects and euphonic phrasing, with short sentences making the relatively high page count fly. Along with kitting out shiny Bike with splendid streamers, lights, training wheels, and even a horn, Biggs pairs Lulu at the end with an equally thrilled little brother (both white) just the right size for a hand-me-down. Everyone's indeed a winner here, and the subtle message about safety consciousness is likewise right on track. -- Kirkus Reviews * December 15, 2019 *Growing pains abound in this vehicular tale about change and new beginnings. Outgrown by child Lulu, red Trike languishes in the garage (“a rusty little fellow,/ a trusty little fellow”) until teal Bike arrives, a gift for Lulu’s birthday. Lonely and insecure, Trike worries that the child will forget all they braved together: “summer bees,/ skinned knees” and the terrible day Lulu finally outgrew her tricycle (“No go,” says her younger sibling, Tru). Challenged to a race by overconfident, wheelie-popping Bike (“a happy young fellow, a snappy young fellow”), careful Trike sees an opportunity to secure safety for Lulu, but calamity strikes when the two hit the road. Together, Bike’s uncontrolled enthusiasm and Trike’s cautious concern represent two very real and often competing emotions commonly felt during times of significant change. Rhythmic, personality-laden text by Verdick (Small Walt) couples with dynamic anthropomorphic energy and emotion dexterously conveyed by Biggs (The Space Walk) to create an amusing friendship story that’s just right for reading aloud. Ages 4–8. Author’s agent: Mary Cummings, Betsy Amster Literary Enterprises. Illustrator’s agent: Steven Malk, Writers House. (Feb.) -- Publishers Weekly * * December 9, 2019 *A lonely old tricycle reminisces about his good times with Lulu, who has outgrown him now. Suddenly, the garage door rumbles open and a snappy, young bicycle rolls in. Confiding that he’s “a secret surprise,” Bike whizzes around Trike and pops a wheelie. Feeling protective of Lulu, Trike tries to talk about her, but Bike won’t listen. They head out to the big hill, where reckless Bike veers off-road, unknowingly heading toward a cliff. Dashing up to collide with Bike, Trike prevents a dangerous fall and then jokes about their crash. Bike admits he has a lot to learn, and they become friends, just in time for Lulu’s birthday. Children will readily understand both characters’ points of view. The simple story has a well of genuine emotion, reflecting the attachment that many kids (and adults) feel for their tricycles and bicycles. Well-crafted and sometimes amusing, the text creates a sure sense of the characters, who spring to life in the quirky, imaginative illustrations, expressively “rendered in pencil and pixels.” A sure bet for read-aloud fun. -- Booklist * January 1, 2020 *

    10 in stock

Book Synopsis“Every young child deserves to know Small Walt.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) Small Walt meets a stray puppy in this irresistible companion to Small Walt, which Kirkus Reviews called “charming and endearing” in a starred review. We’re Gus and Walt. We plow and salt. No job’s too small. We give our all! Walt and his driver Gus are plowing a parking lot when the see—whoa! What’s that? A blur of fur! Pup on the loose! Can snowplow Small Walt and driver Gus save the stray and save the day?Trade ReviewWill the eponymous, anthropomorphic snowplow and his driver, Gus, be able to help a stray dog in the snowy city? Of course, the resounding answer is yes—and with their characteristic teamwork and compassion. As always, the fun of watching the team do their careful work of plowing in areas too tight for the larger plows is enhanced by simple sentences, easily learned jingles, and plenty of onomatopoeia. In this episode, astute viewers will notice signs of the dog before Walt does; he in turn is ahead of Gus. When Gus—who presents as white—calls for help in rescuing the dog, a police SUV named Bea shows up with her dark-skinned, female driver, Officer Chance. Young readers are again given opportunities to speculate and predict: Will Walt’s open cab door help the humans as they stumble about, trying to catch the “blur of fur”? The climactic chase scene ends with the SUV taking the dog away, acknowledging Walt’s contribution: “Take a bow, plow.” Later, Gus drives a somewhat saddened Walt to the animal shelter. The anticipated ending includes a new rhyme that presents the new threesome. The retro-style illustrations include diversity in humans. As in previous books, universally lauded human values come through with no trace of didacticism. And the carefully crafted sentences with limited, repetitive vocabulary work well for both beginning readers and the read-aloud crowd. (This book was reviewed digitally with 9-by-18-inch double-page spreads viewed at actual size.) Every young child deserves to know Small Walt. Book SynopsisSome of your words are kind. But some of them are not. Words are not for hurting. What do hurtful words do?" Children are known for speaking their minds. We can't expect them to watch every word, but we can help them to understand that their words affect other people. We can gently guide them to choose words that are helpful instead of hurtful, and to say two very important words--"I'm sorry"--when hurtful words come out before they can stop them. Like Free Spirit's earlier board books Hands Are Not for Hitting and Teeth Are Not for Biting, Words Are Not for Hurting helps little ones learn big ideas: that they are responsible for what they do and say; that their actions and words affect others; and that they can make positive choices.
