Book SynopsisThe story of the man who instigated the work that led to the internet—and shifted our understanding of what computers could be. Behind every great revolution is a vision, and behind perhaps the greatest revolution of our time is the vision of J.C.R. Licklider. He did not design the first personal computers or write the software that ran on them, nor was he involved in the legendary early companies that brought them to the forefront of our everyday experience. He was instead a relentless visionary who saw the potential in the way that individuals could interact with computers and software. At a time when computers were a short step removed from mechanical data processors, Licklider was writing treatises on “human-computer symbiosis,” “computers as communication devices,” and a now not-so-unfamiliar “Intergalactic Network.” His ideas became so influential, his passion so contagious, that author M. Mitchell Waldrop calls him “computing’s Johnny Appleseed.” In a simultaneously compelling personal narrative and comprehensive historical exposition, Waldrop tells the story of the man who not only instigated the work that led to the internet, but also shifted our understanding of what computers were and could be. This Stripe Press edition also includes the original texts of Licklider’s three most influential writings: “Man-Computer Symbiosis” (1960), which outlines the vision that led to the personal computer revolution of the 1970s; his “Intergalactic Network” memo (1963), which outlines the vision that inspired the internet; and “The Computer as a Communication Device” (1968, coauthored with Robert Taylor), which amplifies his vision for what the network could become.Trade Review“When people ask me about Xerox Parc, I always tell them about J. C. R. Licklider "Lick" and how he formed the ARPA Information Processing Techniques Office in 1962 and started the great research funding for interactive computing and pervasive worldwide networks that has resulted in most of the technology we use today: both via the inventions of the eventually 16 or so ARPA projects at various universities and think tanks, and by creating the next generations of computing researchers, many of whom became the founders and mainstays of Xerox Parc. The top book I recommend to read about this large process that stretched over 20 years is The Dream Machine by M. Mitchell Waldrop. It is the most accurate, has the most detail, and has the best organization and writing. He is able to admirably catch many of the most important parts of both the history and the spirit of the many headed research and engineering processes that together created our interactive networked information world. ” —Alan Kay, computer scientist and A.M. Turing Award recipient “The Dream Machine works admirably as an exploration of the intellectual and political roots of the rise of modern computing. It's an ambitious and worthwhile addition to the history of science. ” —San Francisco Chronicle “ A masterpiece! A mesmerizing but balanced and comprehensive look at the making of the information revolution the people, the ideas, the tensions, and the hurdles. And on top of that, it is beautifully written. ” —John Seely Brown, former director of Xerox PARC, coauthor of The Social Life of Information “A sprawling history of the ideas, individuals, and groups of people that got us from punch cards to personal computers… comprehensive… impressive… [and] compelling.” —The New York Times Book Review “The story is fascinating, played out in almost 500 pages of engrossing politics, personalities, and passions. This is not a casual read—but for those who want the whole story, well told, it is a very good one.” —Wired “A sweeping history of personal computing, made vivid by rich detail.” —The St. Louis Post-Dispatch “A well-reported story about the overwhelming power of vision and tenacity.” —USA Today “An informative and engaging history.” —Library JournalTable of ContentsPrologue: Tracy’s dadChapter 1: Missouri boysChapter 2: The last transitionChapter 3: New kinds of peopleChapter 4: The freedom to make mistakesChapter 5: The tale of the fig tree and the waspChapter 6: The phenomena surrounding computersChapter 7: The intergalactic networkChapter 8: Living in the futureChapter 9: Lick’s kidsAcknowledgmentsNotesBibliographyIndexAddendum

Book Synopsis?Irresistibleis a fascinating and much needed exploration of one of the most troubling phenomena of modern times.??Malcolm Gladwell, author ofNew York TimesbestsellersDavid and GoliathandOutliers? One of the most mesmerizing and important books I?ve read in quite some time. Alter brilliantly illuminates the new obsessions that are controlling our lives and offers the tools we need to rescue our businesses, our families, and our sanity.? ?Adam Grant,New York Timesbestselling author ofOriginalsandGive and TakeWelcome to the age of behavioral addiction?an age in which half of the American population is addicted to at least one behavior. We obsess over our emails, Instagram likes, and Facebook feeds; we binge on TV episodes and YouTube videos; we work longer hours each year; and we spend an average of three hours each day using our smartphones. Half of us would rather suffer a broken bone than a broken phone, and Millennial kids spend so much time in front of screens that they struggle to interact with real, live humans. In this revolutionary book, Adam Alter, a professor of psychology and marketing at NYU, tracks the rise of behavioral addiction, and explains why so many of today''s products are irresistible. Though these miraculous products melt the miles that separate people across the globe, their extraordinary and sometimes damaging magnetism is no accident. The companies that design these products tweak them over time until they become almost impossible to resist. By reverse engineering behavioral addiction, Alter explains how we can harness addictive products for the good?to improve how we communicate with each other, spend and save our money, and set boundaries between work and play?and how we can mitigate their most damaging effects on our well-being, and the health and happiness of our children.Adam Alter''s previous book, Drunk Tank Pink:And Other Unexpected Forces that Shape How We Think, Feel, and Behaveis available in paperback from Penguin.

  • Becoming Beside Ourselves

Duke University Press Becoming Beside Ourselves

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisPresents the investigation that the renowned cultural theorist and mathematician Brian Rotman began in his previous books Signifying Nothing and Ad Infinitum ...the Ghost in Turing's Machine: exploring certain signs and the conceptual innovations and subjectivities that they facilitate or foreclose.Trade Review“Becoming Beside Ourselves is a bold, provocative, and highly original argument about the relation between medial effects and changing manifestations of subjectivity. It traces a sweeping trajectory from what Brian Rotman calls the ‘lettered self,’ associated with alphabetic inscription and the codex printed book, to the subject as distributed assemblage associated with network culture. While others have made parts of this kind of argument before, Rotman’s analysis is unique in placing special emphasis on gesture and revealing its traces in orality and print. In a brilliant synthesis, he mixes evolutionary theory with a Deleuzian view of agent-as-assemblage, arguing that computational media both reveal and perform distributed cognition as a crucial aspect of human being-in-the-world. Essential reading for anyone interested in the interrelations between computational media, contemporary subjectivity, and human evolution.”—Katherine Hayles, University of California, Los Angeles“Brian Rotman’s exciting new text not only adds to his previous work on signifying technology (zero, infinity), it expands his study of abstraction to encompass the construction of subjectivity itself. Becoming Beside Ourselves will open up all kinds of unexplored terrains, from grammatology to psychoanalysis, from the history of technology to the study of culture and religion.”—Fredric Jameson, Duke UniversityTable of ContentsForeword: Machine Bodies, Ghosts, and Para-Selves: Confronting the Singularity with Brian Rotman / Timothy Lenoir ix Preface xxxi Acknowledgments xxxv Aura xxxvii Introduction: Lettered Selves and Beyond 1 Part I 1. • The History of the GPU - Eras and Environment

Springer International Publishing AG The History of the GPU - Eras and Environment

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is the second book in a three-part series that traces the development of the GPU, which is defined as a single chip with an integrated transform and lighting (T&L) capability. This feature previously was found in workstations as a stand-alone chip that only performed geometry functions. Enabled by Moore’s law, the first era of GPUs began in the late 1990s.Silicon Graphics (SGI) introduced T&L first in 1996 with the Nintendo 64 chipset with integrated T&L but didn’t follow through. ArtX developed a chipset with integrated T&L but didn’t bring it to market until November 1999.The need to integrate the transform and lighting functions in the graphics controller was well understood and strongly desired by dozens of companies. Nvidia was the first to produce a PC consumer level single chip with T&L in October 1999. All in all, fifteen companies came close, they had designs and experience, but one thing or another got in their way to prevent them succeeding. All the forces and technology were converging; the GPU was ready to emerge. Several of the companies involved did produce an integrated GPU, but not until early 2000. This is the account of those companies, the GPU and the environment needed to support it. The GPU has become ubiquitous and can be found in every platform that involves a computer and a user interface.Table of ContentsForeword.- Preface.- 1 Introduction.- 2 The GPU Functions.- 3 The Major GPU Eras.- 4 The First Era of GPUs.- 5 The GPU Environment—Hardware.- 6 Application Program Interface (API).- 7 The GPU Environment—Software Extensions and Custom Features.- Appendix A: Definitions.- Appendix B: Acronyms.

For example, the case of the television network that wanted to comingle its programming content with encyclopedic information, a goal that required the active use of nearly every wrench and screwdriver in the CS toolkit. It demonstrates the highly strategic and supremely tactical nature of content strategy in a single project, including a healthy portion of organizational challenge, a common byproduct of smart content choices. In Content Strategy at Work, Bloomstein frames the cases with meaningful context, crisp approaches to problem solving (I will definitely be cribbing from her message architecture client exercise, which she generously shares) and genuine curiosity." --ScatterGather.Razorfish.com "The newest book to the list, Content Strategy at Work by Margot Bloomstein, is a great starting point for those with backgrounds in SEO, social media, or design. Bloomstein effortlessly ties common marketing disciplines to the emerging forefront of content marketing and does so by providing ultra-readable and down to earth case studies. The real lesson presented here, and what drives this book, is to give the user a better experience, a goal that all marketers, regardless of?background, shouldn’t find much trouble getting behind." --SparkPlugDigital.com "Margot Bloomstein guides us through the lifecycle and mindset for content strategy. The process begins with defining what you really need to say. It ends with a solid plan, and long-term commitment, for maintaining that content. To illustrate this lifecycle, Bloomstein provides not only approaches from her personal experience but also a range of case studies from non-profits, healthcare, auto, apparel, higher education and many more. That’s a wide variety of budgets, team sizes, and goals. Chances are you'll find many instances in this book that make you say, ‘Their situation is exactly like ours!’" --Content-Science.com "Bloomstein, who heads a brand and content strategy consultancy that helps retailers, universities, and other clients engage target audiences and project key messages through traditional and social media, shows designers, information architects, project managers, copywriters, social media consultants, and others who work with visual or verbal content specific strategies for prioritizing content initiatives to ensure that its types, tone, and media support the customer experience in a way that is appropriate to the brand and useful to its audience." --Reference and Research Book News, Inc.Table of ContentsChapter 1: How content strategy can help Chapter 2: Designing cohesive experiences: introducing content strategy to design Chapter 3: Embracing reality: incorporating content strategy into project management and information architecture Chapter 4: Executing on content strategy through copywriting, curation, and aggregation Chapter 5: Coupling content strategy with search engine optimization Chapter 6: Improving content management with content strategy Chapter 7: Grounding social media in content strategy Chapter 8: Growing the business and getting to work

Book SynopsisTrade Review"This book is an outstanding contribution to HCI’s pedagogical and reference literature, reviewing and explaining the numerous research methods in common use. It motivates with numerous examples the methods in terms of posing questions and designing research to answer those questions. It covers well both quantitative and qualitative methods. The treatment is accessible and lively. The book should be considered for adoption by all HCI instructors." --Ron Baecker, Member of the CHI Academy, Founder and Co-Director, Technologies for Aging Gracefully lab (TAGlab), and Emeritus Professor of Computer Science, University of Toronto "This is the research methods book I recommend to my students and colleagues. And it's a time-saver: my students make fewer methodological mistakes and we can now engage in deeper and more insightful discussions about specific challenges of their research work. With this improved and updated edition, the bar is even higher! With increasing traces of our lives online and availability of Big Data in many research projects, the new chapter on online and ubiquitous HCI research was a welcome addition to the already comprehensive, multi-method research book. Every HCI student, researcher, and practitioner must read it!" --Simone Barbosa, Professor, PUC-Rio, Brazil, and co-Editor-in-Chief of ACM Interactions "Research Methods in HCI is an excellent resource for newcomers and seasoned HCI professionals alike. Covering all the basic methods for conducting research in HCI, concepts are explained clearly and brought alive through case studies and examples. In addition to offering how-to details, the text offers detailed rationale for why and when to use different methods. Some historical context and controversial viewpoints are also offered. Clear discussions around how to select participants and work with different populations are offered, as are ethical issues in conducting research. The attention to these kinds of details makes this a truly engaging, readable text. The extensive list of references offers plenty of scope for follow-up for those wishing to deepen their knowledge even further. The 2nd edition offers new and refreshed content, updated examples and case studies, and new references and resources." --Elizabeth Churchill, Member of the CHI Academy, Secretary/Treasurer of ACM, currently Director of User Experience at Google, formerly Director of Human Computer Interaction at eBay "This book by Lazar, Feng, and Hochheiser is a must read for anyone in the field of Human-Computer Interaction. Their multi-discipline approach, housed in the reality of the technological world today, makes for a practical and informative guide for user interface designers, software and hardware engineers and anyone doing user research" --Mary Czerwinski, Principal Research Manager, Microsoft Research, Recipient of the ACM SIGCHI Lifetime Service Award, Member of the CHI Academy, and ACM Fellow "This is a superb book for all researchers, practitioners, and students interested in the investigation of anything related to HCI. This new edition has much needed information on research methods in HCI that have become prevalent, including crowdsourcing as well as new creative ways to collect and analyze qualitative data, two examples of essential skills for today's HCI students! Highly recommended!" --Vanessa Evers, Full Professor and Chair of Human Media Interaction, Scientific Director of the DesignLab, University of Twente, the Netherlands "I recommend this book to all my PhD students. It provides excellent coverage of a range of HCI research methods, and importantly, the context for researchers to know how the methods relate to each other and how to choose a method that is appropriate for their own research question. The book is a very nice read. It is an excellent reference for HCI researchers, not only for those just starting out, but also for experienced researchers who would like to firm up their knowledge of HCI methods." --Faustina Hwang, Associate Professor of Digital Health, Biomedical Engineering, University of Reading, UK "This is the book for you! Whether you are a seasoned practitioner, a student starting out, an established professor, or someone just curious about how HCI finds answers to research questions. Clear, coherent and comprehensive, it covers the classical - like surveys and ethnography - and the highly contemporary, including online and automated methods. Written in an accessible, engaging style and illustrated with examples and case studies from Google, Yahoo and the authors' own extensive experiences, this book should be on the desk of everyone doing HCI and UX design, development and research." --Matt Jones, Author of Mobile Interaction Design (Wiley) & There’s Not an App for that: Mobile UX Design for Life (Morgan Kaufmann). Professor of Computer Science, Future Interaction Technology Lab, Swansea University, UK "?This book is a must-read for those who seek a broad view and in-depth understanding of HCI research methodologies. I have had the privilege of using the earlier version of this book for my HCI research method classes for both academic and professional programs -- it was extraordinarily useful for students and researchers in the HCI field. Now, this 2nd edition becomes even more valuable as it not only includes more content regarding quantitative methods, such as statistical analysis, but also totally revamped qualitative data analysis. This updated version will be an indispensable reference for both students and practitioners who want to enhance their research skills in HCI." --Jinwoo Kim, Professor of HCI at Yonsei University, Korea, Founder and CEO at HAII "As an educator and a researcher who frequently makes use of methods for gathering data from users, I was excited to see the variety and range of techniques for working with people presented in this book. It is also refreshing to see the book's emphasis on issues such as bias and ethics in research. The chapter that explicitly discusses best practices for working with participants with disabilities truly makes this book stand out. First, there is no equivalent resource that I know of on this topic. Second, I believe the lessons presented in this chapter can help to illustrate the importance of understanding and working with any population that is significantly different from the average undergraduate research participant featured in so many studies! Since HCI is expanding its domain more and more, this is a very timely lesson." --Jen Mankoff, Professor, Human Computer Interaction Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, Chair of the SIGCHI Accessibility Community "If you care about HCI research, then this book is a must-read. The book contains a broad coverage of methods and techniques for HCI research. This edition contains major additions to the previous version that are extremely timely, dealing with evolutions of interactive technologies and evolutions of knowledge in the area of HCI research. It is clear that the authors have applied the methods described in the book to understand their audience, building a book that is very pedagogic, blending a lot of knowledge in the field of HCI but still remaining easy to read, to understand and to apply for practitioners, students and lecturers in HCI." -- Philippe Palanque, Professor of computer science at Université Toulouse III, France, Chair of the CHI Conference Steering Committee, member of the CHI Academy, and co-editor of The Handbook of Formal Methods in Human-Computer Interaction "This is the book that every researcher will want to read. Comprehensive and at the same time 'hand-holding', this book guides researchers through designing and running their own studies using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Even seasoned researchers will want to dip in to checkout details, while students will find this book particularly inspiring. There's something in the book for everyone." --Jenny Preece, Professor, iSchool and Human-Computer Interaction Lab, University of Maryland, Member of the CHI Academy, co-author of Interaction Design (4th edition) "Over the last 20 years research and practice in Human-Computer-Interaction have matured. An in-depth understanding of methods in this field is essential and the key to success in research as well as in industry. The big question is how we teach and learn about these methods? Is a book in the digital age, in times when people are excited about MOOCs, and when video tutorials are everywhere still an appropriate medium? Absolutely! This book is at the same time an accessible text book as well as a comprehensive reference. The topics are well selected and are highly relevant for students, researchers, and practitioners. Each chapter has a focus, communicates the basics, and teaches how to practically apply it. The new edition includes all the basics I would teach, and additionally provides a profound introduction to new topics, including Human-computer Interaction in the context of online systems and ubiquitous computing." --Albrecht Schmidt, Professor of Computer Science, Human Computer Interaction Group - VIS, University of Stuttgart, Germany, and ACM SIGCHI 2014 Program Co-Chair "Aspiring accessibility researchers will find the final chapter packed with invaluable tips for avoiding common pitfalls when working with populations with disabilities. The authors’ passion and deep experience shine through." --Shari Trewin, IBM Research, Chair of the ACM Special Interest Group on Accessible Computing "As a fan of the first edition who used it extensively in my research methods courses, I am thrilled to see the second edition expanded in exciting ways, especially around quantitative and qualitative data analysis. Also, the industrial case studies add real-world relevance to an already essential book. I highly recommend this new edition, whether you are conducting academic HCI research or user research in a startup or large company. It is an invaluable resource." --Jacob O. Book Synopsis“Well-timed . . . a powerful indictment of the current system.” —Wall Street JournalIn December 2009, Google began customizing its search results for all users, and we entered a new era of personalization. With little notice or fanfare, our online experience is changing, as the websites we visit are increasingly tailoring themselves to us. In this engaging and visionary book, MoveOn.org board president Eli Pariser lays bare the personalization that is already taking place on every major website, from Facebook to AOL to ABC News. As Pariser reveals, this new trend is nothing short of an invisible revolution in how we consume information, one that will shape how we learn, what we know, and even how our democracy works. The race to collect as much personal data about us as possible, and to tailor our online experience accordingly, is now the defining battle for today’s internet giants like Google, Facebook, Apple and Microsoft.

Book SynopsisOver the coming decades, Artificial Intelligence will profoundly impact the way we live, work, wage war, play, seek a mate, educate our young, and care for our elderly. It is likely to greatly increase our aggregate wealth, but it will also upend our labor markets, reshuffle our social order, and strain our private and public institutions. Eventually it may alter how we see our place in the universe, as machines pursue goals independent of their creators and outperform us in domains previously believed to be the sole dominion of humans. Whether we regard them as conscious or unwitting, revere them as a new form of life or dismiss them as mere clever appliances, is beside the point. They are likely to play an increasingly critical and intimate role in many aspects of our lives. The emergence of systems capable of independent reasoning and action raises serious questions about just whose interests they are permitted to serve, and what limits our society should place on their creation and use. Deep ethical questions that have bedeviled philosophers for ages will suddenly arrive on the steps of our courthouses. Can a machine be held accountable for its actions? Should intelligent systems enjoy independent rights and responsibilities, or are they simple property? Who should be held responsible when a self-driving car kills a pedestrian? Can your personal robot hold your place in line, or be compelled to testify against you? If it turns out to be possible to upload your mind into a machine, is that still you? The answers may surprise you.Trade ReviewI found this to be well worth reading; it covers serious matters from an intelligent point of view and leaves one with much food for thought. * Peter Tyers, Concatenation *Artificial Intelligence. Combining vivid narratives with insightful analysis, the book is both highly informative and enormously entertaining. * Ernest Davis, Professor of Computer Science, New York University *You won't need a degree in linear algebra or multivariate calculus to understand The AI Delusion — a no-nonsense look at the limitations of Big Data. * Andrew Sloves, Former Managing Director at JP Morgan *This refreshing, amusing and frank book dispels many myths about the nature of AI when compared with human intelligence, with a stimulating range of examples. * David Lorimer, Paradigm Explorer *A remarkable book: deeply thoughtful but highly readable, full of practical examples to illustrate Smith's powerful computational critique of the proliferation of AI, big data, and machine learning in our daily lives. Truly essential reading. * Frank Pasquale, author The Black Box Society *Professor Gary Smith demonstrates why artificial intelligence doesn't live up to the hype. He uses a wide variety of real-world examples to illustrate the risks of taking humans out of the decision-making process. * Karl J. Meyer, Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers *Big data is increasingly being used to make big decisions, and that's a good thing, as long as we keep aware of how things can go wrong, as Gary Smith explains in this fun new book. * Andrew Gelman, Director of the Applied Statistics Center at Columbia University *Data professionals and consumers can benefit from Smith's entertaining and accessible demonstration that more computing power and more data do not imply more intelligence. We need to have more confidence in our human intellect. Humans may have common sense and an appreciation of context. Computers uniformly have none. * Eric Engberg, Data Scientist and Software Engineer, Wells Fargo *Prof Smith delivers a strong defense of the scientific method - theory before data - and clearly demonstrates the limitations of 'AI' and 'Big Data'. * Chris Nelson, CFO Universal Studios Hollywood *Smith's book goes a long way towards dispelling the BS about AI. * Roger Schank, Professor Emeritus, Northwestern University *Remarkable ... This book so deserves to be widely read. * Jonathan Cowie, Concatenation *Table of Contents1: Intelligent or Obedient? 2: Doing Without Thinking 3: Symbols Without Context 4: Bad Data 5: Patterns in Randomness 6: If You Torture the Data Long Enough 7: The Kitchen Sink 8: Old Wine in New Bottles 9: Take Two Aspirin 10: Beat the Market I 11: Beat the Market II 12: We're Watching You

Private and secure access to information. Engineering projects that transform the Earth. Multigenerational information systems for international justice. How should designers, engineers, architects, policy makers, and others design such technology? Who should be involved and what values are implicated? In Value Sensitive Design, Batya Friedman and David Hendry describe how both moral and technical imagination can be brought to bear on the design of technology. With value sensitive design, under development for more than two decades, Friedman and Hendry bring together theory, methods, and applications for a design process that engages human values at every stage. After presenting the theoretical foundations of value sensitive design, which lead to a deep rethinking of technical desi

Book SynopsisEssays on computer art and its relation to more traditional art, by a pioneering practitioner and a philosopher of artificial intelligence. In From Fingers to Digits, a practicing artist and a philosopher examine computer art and how it has been both accepted and rejected by the mainstream art world. In a series of essays, Margaret Boden, a philosopher and expert in artificial intelligence, and Ernest Edmonds, a pioneering and internationally recognized computer artist, grapple with key questions about the aesthetics of computer art. Other modern technologies—photography and film—have been accepted by critics as ways of doing art. Does the use of computers compromise computer art's aesthetic credentials in ways that the use of cameras does not? Is writing a computer program equivalent to painting with a brush?Essays by Boden identify types of computer art, describe the study of creativity in AI, and explore links between computer art and traditio

Book SynopsisAn examination of the implications for society of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence systems, combining a humanities perspective with technical analysis; includes exercises and discussion questions.AI and Humanity provides an analytical framing and a common language for understanding the effects of technological advances in artificial intelligence on society. Coauthored by a computer scientist and a scholar of literature and cultural studies, it is unique in combining a humanities perspective with technical analysis, using the tools of literary explication to examine the societal impact of AI systems. It explores the historical development of these technologies, moving from the apparently benign Roomba to the considerably more sinister semi-autonomous weapon system Harpy. The book is driven by an exploration of the cultural and etymological roots of a series of keywords relevant to both AI and society. Works examined range from Narrative of the Life of Fr

Book SynopsisA conceptual update of affordance theory that introduces the mechanisms and conditions framework, providing a vocabulary and critical perspective.Technological affordances mediate between the features of a technology and the outcomes of engagement with that technology. The concept of affordances, which migrated from psychology to design with Donald Norman's influential 1988 book, The Design of Everyday Things, offers a useful analytical tool in technology studies—but, Jenny Davis argues in How Artifacts Afford, it is in need of a conceptual update. Davis provides just such an update, introducing the mechanisms and conditions framework, which offers both a vocabulary and necessary critical perspective for affordance analyses. The mechanisms and conditions framework shifts the question from what objects afford to how objects afford, for whom, and under what circumstances. Davis shows that through this framework, analy

Book SynopsisAn expert introduction to the world of “playful wearables” and their design, with a wide range of engaging examples, case studies, and exercises. This pioneering introduction to the world of wearable technology takes readers beyond the practical realm (think Fitbits, Apple watches, and smart glasses) to consider another important side of the technology—the playful. Playful Wearables offers an engaging account of what “playful wearables” are, why they matter, how they work, how they’re made, and what their future might hold. The book’s authors—Oğuz Buruk, Ella Dagan, Katherine Isbister, Elena Márquez Segura, and Theresa Jean Tanenbaum—draw on decades of experience in design, development, and research to offer real-world examples, exercises, and implications, showing how this kind of wearable tech can introduce an invaluable element of play into our everyday lives. As wearable technology emerges in the ecology of costume and fashion, the authors consider its intimate connection to identity and culture. And they look at the ways in which playful wearables, when smoothly integrated into everyday social experiences, support social interaction. The book then moves on to the mechanics of playful wearables—from design strategies and frameworks to specific methods and game design patterns—the building blocks for great playful, wearable designs. All of these elements point to possibilities beyond the realm of games and dedicated play, as the value and uses of playful wearables in the larger world of self, society, and culture become ever more apparent.
