Book SynopsisThe coach – distinguished from the bus by its use for longer-haul and more comfortable trips – has a long and august history. Its origins lie in the charabanc, a long open-topped vehicle used to transport passengers on works outings and pleasure excursions. Over time, coaches came to be enclosed and fitted with more comfortable seating and higher-quality bodywork than the charabancs and the buses used on shorter routes. By the 1960s and 1970s on-board toilets began to be fitted, and despite a decline due to private car ownership, coach travel remains popular, with Wi-Fi, electric sockets and even video screens now built in. This colourful introduction explains the development of motor coach design and the main coach manufacturers, models and operators, offering a fascinating insight into the history of the nation’s most popular vehicles.Trade ReviewAn excellent, well-illustrated and very comprehensive yet compact book that enlightened me to many aspects of coaches and coach travel through the years. Oxford University Press Sweatshops on Wheels
Book SynopsisIn 1977 the US government began to loosen regulations on the tightly controlled trucking industry, expecting that increased competition would drive down companies'' shipping costs. In this provocative new book Michael H. Belzer takes a close look at trucking deregulation, discussing its effects on the industry in particular and the unintended consequences of deregulation in general. He makes the case that government still has a role to play in ameliorating the hardship caused by competition while retaining its benefits.Trade ReviewIs low pay in the trucking industry making the nation's roads unsafe ? With the U.S. economy booming and the demand for drivers mounting, why haven't working conditions for truckers improved? This book argues that trucking embodies the dark side of the new economy. * Sweatshops on Wheels, U.S. News and World Report *Table of Contents1: A New Look at Competitive Forces 2: Two Decades of Decline 3: The Road From Institutional to Market Regulation 4: An Industry Transformed 5: Collective Bargaining Still Makes a Difference 6: Labor Market Failure and the Role of Institutions 7: What if the Rest of the World Looked Like Trucking 8: Deregulation as Public Policy: Competition's Winners and Losers

Institute of Economic Affairs On the Move....
Book SynopsisThis Hobart Paper addresses one of the great economic and social problems of our time: the suboptimal allocation of resources that has arisen from the incompatible financial, fiscal and regulatory regimes for the various modes of inland transport. In order to simplify the argument, it concentrates on the movement of people, whose demand for access to satisfactions gives rise to the derived demand for mobility with with the paper is concerned. The argument rests on the assumption that such satisfactions can only be assessed subjectively and that there is no planning technique which will ensure the provision of the required mobility at a quality and price that will clear the market. Having reviewed the various 'means to mobility', the paper concludes that measures to harmonise their investment, taxation and regulatory regimes so as to create an integrated market form the basis for the only 'national transport policy' that can have either meaning or success.

Harvard University Press Roads to Power Britain Invents the
Book SynopsisGuldi narrates how Britain built the first nation connected by infrastructure, how a libertarian revolution destroyed a national economy, and how technology caused strangers to stop speaking. The new infrastructure state saw unprecedented control by bureaucrats over everyday life and gave rise to competing visions of community still debated today.Trade ReviewIn its masterful integration of technological and political history, this book provides an original, lucid, and exceptionally well-written study of an important episode in the modern co-evolution of transportation infrastructure and government power. -- Rosalind Williams, Massachusetts Institute of TechnologyGuldi describes how the construction of Britain's road network signaled the emergence of a new infrastructure state, bringing conflict in its wake even as it helped to unify the nation and to reconfigure relationships between strangers. Moving elegantly between political, social and cultural history, she places mobility and communications at the heart of historical understanding of how Britain's modernity was made. Beautifully researched and conceived, Roads to Power represents a formidable intellectual achievement. -- Simon Gunn, University of LeicesterIf anyone doubts the power of infrastructure investment to change the course of a nation, they have only to read Roads to Power. Required for those who aim to shape the 21st century. -- Tim O'Reilly, Founder and CEO, O'Reilly Media Inc.As cogent as any turnpike map, engineered as efficiently as any long-distance military conduit, Roads to Power traces the history of the bitter battles over infrastructure that are still with us today. -- John Stilgoe, Harvard UniversityGuldi's vivid and vital book shows how the revolution in British roads changed everything: state power, local politics, religion, manners, and imagination. Alert to detail, pattern, and surprise, she gives us progress and collapse, new openness and new barriers, promise and threat, in a single concise story. There is a lot to learn here and much to enjoy. -- Jedediah Purdy, Duke UniversityWe know roads -- we've known for at least a century and a half how they built a nation by unifying a people. Or do we? In Roads to Power, Guldi displays the power of a broad-gauged revolt against centralization, unification, and expert rule. This original, beautifully researched book shows how towns and poorer travelers wanted their local affiliations to stand. Guldi persuasively argues that the story of road-building is one of conflict, not simply a linear march toward the rule of the center over the periphery. It is a terrific piece of history. -- Peter Galison, Harvard UniversitySocial networks have history. In order to understand what's unfolding in a digital age, it's crucial to step back and think about prior technological turns. Roads to Power offers a brilliant glimpse into the history of social networks in an information revolution -- how women, working people, and utopians used the infrastructure at their disposal to imagine alternatives to the reality in which they live. An absolute must read for historians and digerati alike. -- Danah Boyd, New York UniversityIn modern society, roads are often taken for granted. Guldi examines the history of Britain's road-building enterprises in the 18th and 19th centuries...Guldi points out many ways that this uniting technology greatly divided Britain. This period also provides an interesting case study in the history of technology as civil engineering emerges as its own discipline. Guldi also shows that, from its infancy, engineering has been about more than just developing new technologies and applying them to solve problems--it has required a certain level of salesmanship...Recommended for all interested in city planning and the history of civil engineering. -- William Baer * Library Journal *The story of British roads is more interesting than you might expect, and Jo Guldi tells it well in Roads to Power: Britain Invents the Infrastructure State. -- Daniel Hannan * Wall Street Journal *In this interesting and readable book, Jo Guldi explores the origins and rise of the 'infrastructure state' through an historical analysis of centralized road planning, investment and regulation in Britain...Transport historians, especially those writing from recent mobility perspectives, will welcome the focus on social and cultural dimensions of travel, aspects of transport history that have long been neglected. More than this, historiographically, the book sets a challenging agenda for interpreting this key transitional period in British history; Guldi's account restores the state to the center of the story...This is a skillfully written and provocative book. Its greatest strengths lie in its in-depth coverage of two previously underexplored areas of state-led road expansion, including a meticulous analysis of new construction technologies, and in its exploration of the (sometimes unexpected) impact that new infrastructure could have on the users of roads and the communities served by them. Its wider arguments, if accepted, will prompt a significant re-conceptualization of 18th- and 19th-century British political and economic history. -- Pete Maw * Reviews in History *

Kent State University Press America's First Interstate: The National Road,
Book SynopsisThe story of America's first government-sponsored highway. The National Road was the first major improved highway in the United States built by the federal government. Built between 1811 and 1837, this 620-mile road connected the Potomac and Ohio Rivers and was the main avenue to the West. Roger Pickenpaugh's comprehensive account is based on detailed archival research into documents that few scholars have examined, including sources from the National Archives, and details the promotion, construction, and use of this crucially important thoroughfare.America's First Interstate looks at the road from the perspective of westward expansion, stagecoach travel, freight hauling, livestock herding, and politics of construction as the project goes through changing presidential administrations. Pickenpaugh also describes how states assumed control of the road once the US government chose to abandon it, including the charging of tolls. His data-mining approach—revealing technical details, contracting procedures, lawsuits, charges and countercharges, local accounts of travel, and services along the road—provides a wealth of information for scholars to more critically consider the cultural and historical context of the Road's construction and use. While most of America's First Interstate covers the early days during the era of stagecoach and wagon traffic, the story continues to the decline of the road as railroads became prominent, its rebirth as US Route 40 during the automobile age, and its status in the present day.Trade ReviewRoger Pickenpaugh's new study of the National Road gathers into one highly readable volume a terrific wealth of information and detail about this first national "intern improvement" project. In our rush to appreciate canals and railroads, historians easily ignore the prosaic business of carving out roads through wild country, quite literally over hills and dales, through swamps and rocky passes. Working with pick and shovel and horse-drawn scrapers, breaking stone by hand to dress the roadways, these early civil engineers truly paved the way for the settler conquest of America's antebellum frontier. Deeply researched in archival sources, this volume fills a serious gap in our literature about early American highways." — John L. Larson, author of Laid Waste! The Culture of Exploitation in Early America "This will now be the go-to text for anyone wishing to learn about the long history of the nation's first major highway. But it is more than that. Pickenpaugh's extensive primary research gives us fascinating anecdotes and brings fresh insight into Jeffersonian and Jacksonian politics and the familiar battles over federalism, as presidents, legislators, entrepreneurs, and workers debated and constructed a 620-mile road that people still travel today." — Lindsay Schakenbach Regele, author of Manufacturing Advantage: War, the State, and the Origins of American Industry, 1776–1848

Island Press Roadways for People: Rethinking Transportation
Book SynopsisThe car-only approach in transportation planning and engineering has led to the construction of roadways that have torn apart and devalued communities, especially Black and Brown communities. Forging a new path to repair this damage requires a community solutions-based approach to planning, designing, and building our roadways. When Lynn Peterson began working as a transportation engineer, she was taught to evaluate roadway projects based only on metrics related to driver safety, allowable speed for the highest number of cars, project schedule, and budget. Involving the community and collaborating with peers were never part of the discussion. Today, Peterson is a recognized leader in transportation planning and engineering, known for her approach that is rooted in racial equity, guided by a process of community engagement, and includes collaboration with other professionals. In Roadways for People, Lynn Peterson draws from her personal experience and interviews with leaders in the field to showcase new possibilities within transportation engineering and planning. She incorporated a community-solutions based approach in her work at Metro, TriMet, and while running the Washington State Department of Transportation, where she played an instrumental role in the largest transportation bill in that state’s history. The community solutions-based approach moves away from the narrow standards of traditional transportation design and focuses instead on a process that involves consistent feedback, learning loops, and meaningful and regular community engagement. This approach seeks to address the transportation needs of the most historically marginalized members of the community. Roadways for People is written to empower professionals and policymakers to create transportation solutions that serve people rather than cars. Examples across the U.S.—from Portland, Oregon to Baltimore, Maryland—show what is possible with a community-centered approach. As traditional highway expansions are put on pause around the country, professionals and policymakers have an opportunity to move forward with a better approach. Peterson shows them how.Table of ContentsForeword by Janette Sadik-Kahn Preface Acknowledgements Chapter 1: Why Transportation Planning and Engineering Need a Paradigm Shift Chapter 2: The Evolution of Approaches to Transportation Engineering and Planning Chapter 3: Addressing the Legacy of Racist Transportation and Housing Policy Chapter 4: Getting Out of Our Siloes Chapter 5: The Community Solutions-Based Approach in Practice Chapter 6: Building Communities of Peoples' Dreams Notes Bibliography Index About the Author

Fox Chapel Publishers International From Moorlands to Highlands: A History of Harris
Book SynopsisThis book follows the history and development of Brian Harris Transport Limited, the original red, green, and yellow liveried lorries that made the trek between Devon and Scotland at regular intervals for over fifty years. In 1946, Brian's father, Jerry, and Sam Miners formed Harris & Miners; with their fleet of two Ford trucks and one Commertipper, these two men took on the ultimate haulage challenge of the time: road vs. train. The outcome was that Harris & Miners were offered a contract to haul 'Devon Grate' Candy fire surrounds to Glasgow in 1947. Young Brian Harris began driving for his father in an Albion Chieftain in 1960. When Jerry Harris passed, Brian bought out the Miners family and the company became Brian Harris Transport Limited. With his fleet of ERF lorries fitted with Gardner engines, Brian set about running the company in a way only understood by him. Over the course of its existence, the company utilized a vast quantity of magnificent machines, including the first ERF 'A' series in that area, the Leyland Roadtrain and one Leyland DAF. Brian Harris died in April 2012 and his funeral was attended by over 600 people from all over the UK. This new edition gives an update to the events that have taken place since the second edition was published in 2007, including the eulogy given by the author at the funeral, as well as 82 previously unpublished photographs. Beginning in the army where he witnessed nuclear testing on Christmas Island in the 1950s, he went on to be a driver, office worker and finally company owner. Bob was able to turn his hand to any aspect of his business operation, from repairing mechanical defects, to operating forklifts and even on the odd occasion, driving his own trucks. In 1975 he set out on Trans UK's maiden run to Iran in his Humber Sceptre with 4 of his trucks in convoy - the first trip of many, for the company. The denationalization of BRS and the implementation of the 'O' licence, the rapid growth of privately owned haulage companies, combined with the Middle East oil boom of the 70s all helped Bob to develop a successful British and international transport operation. A real one-off and Mr. Nice Guy, Bob Carter was held in high esteem and respected by one and all. Including nearly 300 photos, You Call, We Haul is an inspirational story which will appeal to those with an interest in the hey-day of Middle-East travel and those with a general love of great British transport companies.

Fox Chapel Publishers International The World of Custom Trucks: Spectacular Working
Book SynopsisAlthough truck efficiency and performance are priorities for operators and drivers, their pride in their vehicles shows itself in the way that so many are customised and decorated. Ferdy De Martin & Xavier Stefaniak have selected 29 examples of currently working trucks whose decoration is an art form, ranging from the delicate and subtle to transport rococo - a phantasmagoria of images in bright colours. The imaginative designs, high standard of craftsmanship and superb finish create unique vehicles that are immediately recognisable and attract devoted followers. Over 250 fantastic photographs are accompanied by concise captions that are both enthusiastic and illuminating; the authors do full justice to the trucks. The text is in English with synopses in French, and each truck is presented with a number of photographs to show off both the overall designs as well as the details of exteriors and interiors. This is a truly international selection of machines, with eighteen of the twenty-nine trucks featured from Europe, eight from North America and three from the UK.
