Faber & Faber On Playing the Flute
Book SynopsisJohann Joachim Quantz''s On Playing the Flute has long been recognized as one of the primary sources of information about eighteenth-century performance practice. In spite of its title, it is not simply a tutor for the flute, but a fully-fledged programme for training musicians of all types, with detailed information on intonation, ornamentation, dynamics, the ''duties'' of the various accompanying performers, including the leader of the orchestra, and the principal forms and styles (French, Italian and German) of the time. Although Quantz is most often identified as the teacher of Frederick the Great, his musical roots were in Dresden, the most brilliant musical establishment in Germany; and his travels and studies in Italy, France and England gave him direct experience of most phases of European musical life in the 1720s and 30s. What is most impressive about his book is its thorough but flexible approach and its sensible selection of material. * Musical Times *I think the book accomplishes its aims in presenting, in compact form, the latest information on the new techniques required of a clarinetist. Oxford University Press Organ Technique
Book SynopsisThe authors'' new approach to learning two playing techniques offers a systematic method for mastering the modern, legato technique needed for organ music composed arter 1750, as well as an articulated technique for earlier works. The authors also present useful information on accompanying anthems and solos and on adapting piano and orchestral accompaniments to the organ.Trade Reviewfor students with eyes (and ears) wide open to the whole of the field, in a position to understand the instrument and its music as historical artefacts - indeed, as a magnificent legacy from the past - and not merely as vehicles for self-promotion, this book will be a wonderful resource. * Musical Letters, vol. 82, no. 3 *insightful comparisons of the organ and the piano - which are frequent and to the point - certainly should reach students at the level where they are. ... Especially convincing is the brief overview of the twentieth-century American organ. * Musical Letters, vol. 82, no. 3 *Their first two chapters ... provide a particularly elegant presentation of this tradition, enriched by an impressive musicological rigour that in itself sets a new standard for such an undertaking. * Musical Letters, vol. 82, no. 3 *a new and provocative way of teaching organ performance ... With an appealing tone that is both serious and optimistic, yet includes occasional asides of homespun advice, they juxtapose a detailed discussion of the standard way the organ has been taught for the last century or so ... with an equally systematic method for playing early music. * Musical Letters, vol. 82, no. 3 *

Rowman & Littlefield The Shofar
Book SynopsisIn The Shofar, Jeremy Montagu offers a detailed study of the ram's horn of the Bible, describing its history and useboth ritual and secularfrom biblical times to the present. Because the same person normally blows the shofar each year during the Jewish High Holy Days, few are aware of the wide differences among communities around the world: the varying points in the Jewish liturgical service when the shofar is blown, what sound combinations exist, and the many varieties of the instrument. This is the first work of its kind to detail the full range of historical, musical, antiquarian, and religious issues surrounding the ancient instrument with all relevant citations from the Bible, the Talmud, and key post-Talmudic sources. Jeremy Montagu carefully examines horn types, sound characteristics, liturgical uses, and community functions to illustrate how the shofar has reflected local custom, regional needs, and religious practice. Chapters provide difficult-to-find information on how shoTrade ReviewA distinguished scholar of musical instruments, Montagu combines, in his inimitable way, minutely researched scholarship with personal anecdotes and humor. Only he could have written this volume on the shofar, the ancient instrument used in Jewish religious practices. Drawing on his own collection of musical instruments, his experience as a blower of the shofar, and his deep knowledge of Jewish thought, Montagu presents a typology of 16 varieties of shofar, plus instructions on how to choose one, how to make one, how to play it, and who may play it. The most important use of the shofar is for Rosh Hashanah—when it is ‘not a musical instrument [but] instead, a voice, a call from heaven’—but Montagu includes a chapter on its secular use, noting its survival as ‘the oldest musical instrument in written history that is still in use.’ More than 30 instruments are described, their inscriptions cataloged, the theological sources plumbed deeply. This little book will become ‘the’ book on the shofar. And praise is due the publisher for laminating the would-be dust jacket to the covers, thus preserving the photos that would have otherwise been lost in shelving the book in a library. All books should be published this way. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals; general readers. * CHOICE *The Shofar by Jeremy Montagu is a scholarly yet accessible read on the laws, traditions and development of the shofar as we know it today, by someone who has been a shofar blower since the early 1960s. . . .This is the first book to detail the full range of historical, musical, antiquarian and religious issues for the oldest continuously-used musical instrument in the world. It includes more than 60 photographs from his personal collection of shofars from around the world. The book also details secular uses for the shofar, and who can blow the shofar – and why. * Southern Jewish Life Magazine *Scholarly expertise blends with practical experience and a fierce affection to produce what is likely to be the authoritative book on the shofar for years to come…. [T]the author writes from within the Jewish tradition and says so explicitly and proudly. The laws of the shofar’s manufacture and use are clearly set out. There is also an invaluable list of sources, biblical and rabbinical, in which the shofar is mentioned, including the relevant quotation in full. For the aspiring shofar blower, there are lots of useful tips to make sure your horn is heard on high…. The author’s wide knowledge of music is continuously brought to bear, with occasionally luminous results…. Add to this expertise Montagu’s easy conversational prose style, remarkable in any work, let alone one intended for the reference shelf, and you have the ideal gift for the holiday season, as well as a source of knowledge of lasting value. * The Jerusalem Report *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations List of Musical Examples Transliteration Acknowledgments Introduction Chapter 1: Description and Preliminary History Chapter 2: Liturgical Use Chapter 3: The Sounding of the Shofar Chapter 4: Who can Blow and on What Chapter 5: The Secular Uses of the Shofar Chapter 6: Making a Shofar Chapter 7: How to Choose and How to Blow a Shofar Chapter 8: Shofar Typology, Old and New Chapter 9: The Shofar and its Meaning Chapter 10: Biblical, Talmudic, and Post Talmudic Sources Appendix 1: Shofar Inscriptions Appendix 2: Details of all the Shofars Illustrated Bibliography Index About the Author

Equinox Publishing Ltd Chasin' the Bird: The Life and Legacy of Charlie
Book SynopsisIn his short life, Parker was one of the most influential musicians in jazz, and together with Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk, he was the main architect of the modern jazz revolution of the 1940s known as bebop. Addicted to drugs and alcohol, and with a tangled private life, Parker died young, and a legend grew up about his tragic genius. "Chasin' the Bird" is a completely revised and expanded edition of the short biography of Charlie Parker by Brian Priestley, first published in 1984, which quickly established itself as the most succinct, accurate and readable book on Parker. This edition, which is twice the length of the original, incorporates material which has come to light since the first edition was published. It also provides an expanded discussion of performances and recordings, with a complete discography, notes and bibliography.Trade Review'Brian Priestley is one of the most accomplished jazz historians, critics, and biographers, and Chasin' the Bird is an indispensable gem--an ideal introduction to a major figure in 20th century music and an inventive interpretation of Parker's life and art that will also engage veteran jazz lovers. Oxford University Press John Coltrane and Black Americas Quest for Freedom Spirituality and the Music
Book SynopsisThrough a diverse collection of essays and interviews featuring leading Black media personalities, musicians and scholars, this volume presents the "insiders' view" - Black perspectives on Coltrane's powerful and lasting legacy viewed in contemporary times within the context of Black strivings for freedom.Trade ReviewColtrane's significance in the black community goes far beyond the notes he played. He stands for integrity, humility, spirituality, and more. For me, this book is a chance to read what my esteemed friends and colleagues have to say about this twentieth-century icon. For everyone, it's an opportunity to learn about Coltrane - the man and his music - from some new points of view. * Dr. Lewis Porter, Rutgers University-Newark *If John Coltrane was 'invited' into the community of jazz musicians to be a custodian, innovator, and disseminator of Black American culture, Brown himself has invited a first-rate group of Black American contributors-scholars, musicians, media personalities, and educators-to provide an insightful and provocative view of the continuing relevance of Coltrane's music to the development of Black American spirituality, liberation, and non-Western ways of music-making. * Reebee Garofalo, University of Massachusetts, Boston *The collection reads like a lively townhouse meeting in which the impassioned citizens of 'Tranes-ville' stake out their intellectual territories, each arguing for the importance of Coltrane's music and the deep sense of spirituality we sense in his singular brand of cultural nationalism. Come to the meeting and be inspired as well by this musician's exacting execution and uncompromising truth. * Guthrie P. Ramsey, Jr., author of Race Music: Black Cultures from Bebop to Hip-Hop *John Coltrane and Black America's Quest for Freedom is a thorough investigation of John Coltrane's music via the artist, and the artist via his culture, not in an effort to solidify notions of black identity or enshrine a cultural legacy, but rather to show that the Black American experience itself is complex, improvised, defiant, and irreducible. * BlackGrooves.org *An insightful collection. * wirenh.com *Table of ContentsFOREWORD BY T.J. Oxford University Press The Simple Flute From AZ From A to Z
Book SynopsisA practical, concise, and comprehensive guide for flutists.Trade ReviewFinally, after too long a wait we have the English version of Une Simple Flute....I urge every flute player, every flute student, and every library to get this book, devour it, relish its practicality and freshness, and savor its savoir faire. * The Flute Network *Debost's writing style is refreshingly candid and reaches flutists of all levels. His quotes and footnotes reflect an inquiring mind, broad knowledge, and a superb intellect, all of which are inspiring to encounter. His wisdom is shared simply and directly. Other points are made with great humor or with thought-provoking metaphor, or poetic simile. * Leone Buyse, Professor of Flute and Chamber Music at Rice University and former acting principal flute of the Boston Symphony *It should be required reading for every student of the flute. Debost has excellent ideas and expresses them clearly and interestingly. Certainly a must have on the book shelf. * Patricia George *Michel Debost used to tell us in his classes at the Conservatorie de Paris that his methods were not the Bible, but rather a 'gospel according to Saint Michel'....This is a new kind of reference, resting on more than fifty years of experience, full of sensitivity and good sense, with little dogmatism and lots of intelligence....The curious student as well as the established teacher will plunge into the book, and raise their head three minutes later having learned something new that they will want to put to the test immediately. The book is a delight to read, handling language with ease and pertinence, capable of surprising us with each turn of phrase. * Emmanuel Pahud, solo flutist with Berliner Philharmonicker *Table of ContentsA-Z in Form of Introduction; Accompaniment; Accoustics; Agogic; Air column; Air speed; Alignment; Appoggiatura; Appoggio; Arpeggio; Articulation; Attacks; Beginners; Blowing Long Phrases; Breathing; Bridge; Center of Gravity; Circular Blowing; Concentration, Relaxation; Diaphragm; Dynamics; Embouchure; Etudes; Facilitating Fingerings for Passing Notes; ; Fingerings; Finger Phrasing; Flutes; Focus; Freedom; Grace Notes; Hands; Hierarchy of Beats; Images; Interpretation; Interpreting Accents; Intervals; Intonation, Intonations; Isometrics; Jawboning; Keys; Lips; Little Devils; Memory; Muscle Groups; Muscles-Stong and Weak; Notes; Pain and Pleasure; Paris Conservatoire and French School; Phrasing; Posture; Practicing; Programs; Quod libet; Repertoire; Resonance; Rituals; Rest; Rubato; Scale Game; Silence; Stability; Stepping-stones; Stress; Style; Technique; Tempo; Tonguing; Trills; Tuning; Unusual Trill Fingerings; Vibrato; Warm-ups; Yawning; Zeal ,Conclusion

Oxford University Press The Battle for Control of the Brass and
Book SynopsisThe Battle for Control of the Brass and Instruments Business in the French Industrial Revolution narrates and analyzes the largest judicial battle in culture and industrial property in nineteenth century Europe, the echoes of which still ring today. The battle was about simple wind instruments made of brass and their related patents, not by opera - the musical genre that moved the most money and people at the time - or the revered and contentious high art. Music, in all its dimensions, had become a business. The nineteenth-century French industry of brasswinds shows how the strategic parameters of the Industrial Revolution and, essentially, the system that sustained them (capitalism), permeated everything. What lay behind those contentious disputes was the pursuit of commercial profit, and the consolidation of a dominant position that would yield the maximum possible economic return. The legal confrontation began when a group of French businessmen who built wind instruments saw their business and sources of financing threatened after being forced by the Army to use a series of musical instruments that were different to the usual ones and protected by patents for invention that belonged to Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone. Diago Ortega provides evidence of how political power was used by economic power, and presents arguments on how culture articulated the social machinery and was a powerful tool for legitimizing political positions.

University of Illinois Press Musical Ethics and Islam
Book SynopsisAfter the establishment of the Turkish Republic, Turkey's secularized society disdained the ney, the Sufi reed flute long associated with Islam. The instrument's remarkable revival in today's cities has inspired the creation of teaching and learning sites that range from private ney studios to cultural and religious associations and from university clubs to mosque organizations.Banu Şenay documents the years-long training required to become a neyzena player of the ney. The process holds a transformative power that invites students to create a new way of living that involves alternative relationships with the self and others, changing perceptions of the city, and a dedication to craftsmanship. Şenay visits reed harvesters and travels from studios to workshops to explore the practical processes of teaching and learning. She also becomes an apprentice ney-player herself, exploring the desire for spirituality that encourages apprentices and masters alike to pursue ney music aTrade Review”Musical Ethics and Islam is easy on the mind's eye and the ear, full of insight, and a genuine pleasure to read. ªenay well understands her instrument, the crafting of its sounds and the complex demands of her teacher's 'jealous gift'. It charts a new and distinct route through the cultural complexities of Islamic revival in Turkey and beyond; her conclusions will be of real interest to anthropologists of music and of Islam alike.”—Martin Stokes, coeditor of Islam and Popular Culture”Musical Ethics and Islam is a ground-breaking ethnography of the interplay of aesthetic experience and social ideology, art and life. Banu Senay expertly interleaves personal experiences of 'sweet servitude' to a ney master with luminous accounts of the ethical, affective, and political aspects of music in post-Kemalist Turkey and the ney revival of recent years.”—Michael Jackson, author of The Work of Art: Rethinking the Elementary Forms of Religious Life
