Book SynopsisChris Nikic, the first person with Down syndrome to every complete an IRONMAN triathlon, inspires others to achieve their goals by getting better 1% at a time.Trade Review'Business coach Nik Nikic's motivational debut chronicles the remarkable journey of his son, Chris, the first person with Down syndrome to complete the IRONMAN triathlon. Nikic describes the physical, sensory, and cognitive challenges Chris faced as a child, revealing that concern for his son's future became the impetus to explore his capabilities. Growing increasingly frustrated by others' 'realistic' limitations for his son, Nikic became convinced that physical and community activity could improve Chris's quality of life. To help his son realize his potential, Nikic encouraged Chris to write down his dreams and began to implement the gradual improvement approach he used in business to coach his son--describing it as 'developing good habits as the building blocks for progress over time.' For instance, he began Chris's athletic training with only one squat, one sit-up, and one push up. By increasing the regimen by one repetition each training session, Chris was able to do 200 of each exercise only a year later. Nikic also provides insight into making the training with his son a shared adventure. Nikic's inspirational guide will appeal to those preferring to trade the popular 'no pain, no gain' philosophy for an effective, motivating alternative.' * Publishers Weekly *

Book SynopsisDonna Williams was a child with more labels than a jam-jar: deaf, wild disturbed, stupid insane... She lived within herself, her own world her foreground, ours a background she only visited. Isolated from her self and from the outside world, Donna was, in her words, a Nobody Nowhere. She swung violently between these two worlds, battling to join our world and, simultaneously, to keep it out. Abandoned from all connection to the self within her, she lived as a ghost with a body, a patchwork of the images which bombarded her. Intact but detached from the seemingly incomprehensible world around her, she lived in what she called 'a world under glass`.After twenty-five years of being misunderstood, and unable to understand herself, Donna stumbled upon the word 'autism': a label, but one which held up a mirror and made sense of her life and struggles, and gave her a chance to finally forgive both herself and those around her.Nobody Nowhere is disturbing, eloquent and ticklishly funny: it is an account of the soul of someone who lived the word 'autism' and survived in an unsympathetic environment despite intense inner chaos and incomprehension. It describes how, against the odds, Donna came to live independently, achieve a place at university, and write this remarkable autobiography. It is now an international bestseller, sold in over 14 languages throughout the world. This is a book that will stay with you as one of the most exceptional works you will ever read.Trade ReviewNobody Nowhere tears aside the veil that conceals the mind of the autistic person. Donna Williams' account has the magnetic and unrivalled power of authenticity... this book is absorbing, disturbing, enriching and it will cause many to substantially revise their views of what it is that constitutes psychological normality. -- Professor Anthony ClareThis was an interesting account of Donna's life and how she dealt with the outside world and intertwined her three personalities to cope. I feel this is a worthwhile read for any parent or relative of an autistic person. Teachers and psychologists as well as therapists would better understand how an autistic person sees themselves. -- BellaOnline ReviewsDonna Williams isn't just teaching us what it is like to be autistic, she is teaching us what it is like to be human. -- The New York Times Book ReviewIt really is an amazing, engaging autobiography of a fascinating individual. Whether you are familiar with autism first-hand or not, you will have a difficult time putting this book down, I can assure you. -- Autism Café.

Her voice is unforgettable in its power to make you feel, question, learn, and grow. There aren't words for how much the world needs this book." — Megan Jayne Crabbe, bestselling author of Body Positive Power “A disability advocate debuts with a collection offering potent rejoinders to ableism…..A fierce and fabulous revision to entrenched ableist scripts.” — Kirkus Reviews [Starred Review] "Sitting Pretty is the book I needed years ago as I grappled with my sense of self and my identity as a disabled woman. I put it down while reading only long enough to collect myself each time waves of emotion crashed over me. Rebekah's spunky, self-aware wit, combined with education that never feels didactic, make this book a worthwhile and rewarding read." — Emily Ladau, writer, speaker, and disability rights activist "Rebekah Taussig's writing is a gift that keeps giving. Her voice is honest, vulnerable and welcoming...It was a joy to read and listen to Rebekah's words. This beautiful book helped me ask questions, open my heart, and remind me to look more closely at the world around me and what small part we can all have in making it a better, more accessible one." — Grace Bonney, founder of Design*Sponge and author of In the Company of Women "A compelling personal book whose confidential voice leads the reader into the author’s vividly lived world of disability. Smart and funny, [Sitting Pretty] does double duty revealing not only the intimate life of a disabled woman but the flaws of the world around her that seeks to repress and contain her." — Lennard J. Davis, Distinguished Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and author of Enforcing Normalcy and My Sense of Silence: Memoirs of a Childhood with Deafness “An invaluable, eye-opening look at disability from a firsthand perspective.” — Booklist “Her smart and witty observations about living with disabilities will be enlightening and eye-opening for readers.” — Publishers Weekly “Reflecting on her journey toward disability advocacy, Rebekah Taussig's memoir in essays will make you rethink everything you've previously believed about disabled people and their lives. Reflecting on Taussig's personal experiences, and on disability representation more broadly, Sitting Pretty is a rare book from a powerful, new voice.” — Bustle "A groundbreaking and candid memoir" — Shelf Awareness “Taussig’s narrative style is highly conversational, making it feel like one is chatting with a lifelong friend. Book SynopsisLuke Jackson's unabridged and sparkling sequel to his best-selling user guide to adolescence Freaks, Geeks and Asperger Syndrome is the must-read handbook for teenagers and young adults on the autism spectrum. With devastating clarity, Luke focuses on the pitfalls involved in navigating the transition to adulthood, and the challenges of adult life. He covers everything from bullying and drugs to socialising, sex, negotiating relationships, and finding and keeping your first job.Trade ReviewSex, Drugs and Asperger's Syndrome is one of my favorite books this year. Luke Jackson provides the reader with an in-depth understanding of many relevant issues regarding both Asperger's Syndrome as well as autism in general. This includes employment, bullying, sexuality, relationships, and much more. The autism community and society as a whole will benefit greatly from these much needed discussions. -- Stephen M. Edelson, Ph.D., Executive Director, Autism Research Institute (autism.com), San Diego, CaliforniaI enjoyed reading Luke's book immensely and will be recommending it to the majority of my teen/young adult counselling clients in the hope that it will go some way towards assisting them through the years of 'storm and strife' that accompanies this particular passage of time. Luke has managed to cover many facets of 'growing up', including dating and sex among other things. However, his book is not for the parent who wishes to keep their 15-year-old wrapped in a blanket of innocence, for Luke tells it 'how it is', with a no holds barred approach. Using correct descriptors for body parts and various sexual acts, there is an absence of euphemisms. Luke writes from an autobiographical perspective, not claiming to be an expert. What is clear though is that he is an 'expert by experience' and conveys his knowledge deftly like a wise old professor! -- Elaine Nicholson * Action for Asperger's *Jackson wrote Freaks, Geeks and Asperger Syndrome: A User Guide to Adolescence at age 13. Now he returns at age 26 to share all that he has learned, both the good and the challenging, about becoming an adult, living with Asperger's, and finding his place in the world. With candid humor, the author shares his experiences in becoming an adult and what that means to him. He explores the difficulties he and many others with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) deal with, such as finding work, social scenes, bullying, drug use, sexual relationships, and friendships. A consistent message throughout is the acceptance of differences in yourself and others. Jackson encourages those on the spectrum to embrace and own those qualities that make them unique and to use them to their advantage. VERDICT Jackson's personal and brutally honest take on being an adult with ASD is eye-opening and refreshing. A valuable read for teens and adults with ASD as well as parents, siblings, employers, teachers, caregivers, friends, and partners of those on the spectrum. Jackson's view that acceptance of oneself is the first hurdle; welcoming others is key as well -- Library JournalReading Sex, Drugs and Asperger's Syndrome feels like having a conversation with an older brother or cousin. He advises without preaching, explains without boring and throws in enough jokes to make the entire reading experience thoroughly enjoyable... From bullying to drugs, employment to nights out, and mental health to sex, it includes the entire spectrum of life without judgement, leaving no stone unturned and rendering no subject taboo... Powerful, honest, funny and friendly, Sex, Drugs and Asperger's Syndrome is a must-read. -- Penny Gotch * Disability Now *This is a brilliant book. Luke writes beautifully, engagingly and with wisdom. There is nothing he shirks, it is all there, all the drugs, all the pitfalls of relationships, all the social gaffes and mistakes, all described with humour and without judgement. -- Jude Ragan * Autistica *With wisdom beyond his years and the mastery of an expressionist artist, Luke guides the reader through the rocky shoals of successful transition from adolescence to adulthood as a person on the autism spectrum. In fact, this could not be further from the truth. The Autism Spectrum Guide to Relationships and Sexuality addresses this by providing a highly useful guide for adults on the autism spectrum which focusses on practically everything related to relationships, dating and sex. I would have found this book particularly helpful when I was a young adult coming to terms with my gender identity and sexuality and starting to have my first experiences of sexual relationships. The book is completely free of any kind of judgement or moralising. It is respectful and inclusive of the various sexualities and gender differences that people have. The book includes detailed information on a number of topics which autistic adults will find useful, such as different types of sexuality, starting relationships, dating, sexual pleasure and ending relationships. The text is subtle and nuanced, providing information on some complex topics such as people whose sexuality changes over time and how that can impact on their partner. Few topics are left out so it really is a one-stop-shop for adults on the spectrum wanting to gather some useful strategies and understanding around the topic of relationships. -- From the foreword by Jeanette Purkis, autism advocate, public speaker and author of Finding a Different Kind of Normal and The Wonderful World of WorkThe Autism Spectrum Guide to Sexuality and Relationships is a solid guide...Powerful, easy-to-read and practical advice providing knowledge and strategies for people with autism. -- Ioannis Voskopoulos and Labrini Ioannou, PsychologistsTable of ContentsForeword by Dr Wenn Lawson. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Business for Aspies: 42 Best Practices for Using

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMost workplaces are a frenzied swirl of social interaction - between employees and bosses, customers and clients, and anyone else present. People with a mental framework better suited to non-social tasks can often be overlooked and underutilised in such an environment, but this book explains exactly how those with Asperger Syndrome can get their talents recognised and become successful and indispensable employees.Following the DSM system and an easy to use format, Ashley Stanford addresses all of the issues that can arise once a person with AS secures employment, through the eyes of both employee and employer. Describing what might be expected of any employee, she offers helpful tips and workarounds not only to enable AS individuals achieve their fullest potential, but to take advantage of their strengths. In a positive and upbeat tone, she shows that with the right supports and strategies, it is possible to overcome the day-to-day challenges that trip up even the most savvy Aspie, including negotiating pay rises, employer/employee relationships, team meetings, career advancement, and choosing when to take vacation time. Drawing on her experience as CEO of a computer software company, she also suggests steps that employers and managers can take to improve the working environment for people with AS, and take advantage of their strengths to enable them to become outstanding employees. Business for Aspies will help people with AS take steps towards achieving happy, fulfilled and above all successful working lives. It will be of key interest to the employers, managers, partners, and families of people with AS.Trade ReviewDescribes expectations of employers, provides tips to help AS individuals succeed at work, and provides a positive tone in discussing strategies. Business-oriented concerns from pay raises and team meetings are also surveyed in a guide that is simply packed with nuggests of financial wisdom geared to Aspie employees. -- The Midwest Book ReivewA powerful pick for any Asperger adult who wants details on how to handle the working world - and for employers who hire them - makes this a dual recommendation for business and health collections alike. -- The Midwest Book ReviewOverall, I categorize business for Aspies as a good self-help business book. It is written by a businesswomen, not a psychologist, and it's plenty of hints and common sense to help aspies to succeed at work. Indeed, I think that many of the hint she ;proposes are also applicable in other real life situations. The structure of the book, based on 42 separate best practices, and the non-technical language used, makes Business for Aspies a very readable and practical book, that can be read from beginning to end or be used as a reference book for selected topics. -- iautism.infoThis book explains how those with Asperger's syndrome (AS) can get their talents recognised and become successful and indispensable employees. -- Human GivensStanford is expert at finding solutions that only someone who has intimate experience with aspergers is likely to do. She offers straightforward but not obvious advice on how to organise one's physical environment for those with executive function problems... I love this book as it is clear, constructive and realistically positive. -- ASTeensOne of the most brilliant suggestions she makes it that of "Quiet Posture" - meaning a body posture that doesn't indicate any emotion at all. This can neutralize any negative feeling in the workplace and greatly reduce the chances of that person being misunderstood for being angry or sad, when he is feeling just the opposite, but indicating otherwise. She also stresses the importance of keeping hand gestures calm and "small", to reduce social difficulties in the workplace. These are thing I never thought about and I felt as though my brain was getting larger as I read this... In addition, she suggests some neat cognitive strategies, such as using "brain space", to compartmentalize one's day and one's tasks... The Best Practices are numbered, making them available to the reader for easy reference, which makes this a reverence book, also... The survival strategies that she suggests, such as getting enough sleep, creating a nest, or cosy living or work space, and being aware of food sensitivities, such as allergies to gluten, are all common sense approaches that don't cost much, if anything and can be done at anytime, to make one's life better!... This is the best book on employment for people with AS or HFA that I have seen and it should be in every library! -- Newsletter of the Autism Society of MichiganIn a positive and upbeat tone, she shows that with the right supports and strategies, it is possible to overcome the day-to-day challenges that trip up even the most savvy Aspie, including negotiating pay raises, employer/employee relationships, team meetings, career advancement, and choosing when to take vacation time. It will be of key interest to the employers, managers, partners, and families of people with AS. -- The International Centre for Autism Research and EducationThe accessibility of Business for Aspies is a testament to Stanford's sixteen years as a technical writer. After each behaviour, she offers a series of "best practice". Ostensibly addressing the aspie employee, the practices not only manage the specific behaviour but also identify its inherent strengths to the employer. -- Fore Word Reviewsthis is a very useful book, even for people who have no intention of working, or for partners of people on the spectrum, as there is a wealth of details and anecdotes showing how potentially difficult situations can be dealt with, both at work and at home... I think this is a very useful book for employees, employers, colleagues and support workers. I expect everyone will find something new here. -- Asperger UnitedTable of ContentsPreface. Book SynopsisDo you need help dealing with your child's tantrums, inappropriate behavior or communication issues? Then this is the book you've been waiting for.Based on the principles of the Miller Method, this book is filled with effective tips for solving behavioral issues promptly in day-to-day situations. Miller's insights, compiled here and expanded upon by Theresa Smith, are based on an understanding of the cognitive and sensory needs of children with autism and how this can underlie certain disordered behaviors. This practical how-to guide will help you to identify causes of distress, foster friendships, increase focus, toilet train, stop tantrums and handle inappropriate conduct. This will provide essential daily support to parents, families, carers and teachers of pre-adolescent children on the autism spectrum. The book is targeted toward the most affected ASD children.Trade ReviewInspired by the cognitive-developmental theory of psychologist Dr. Arnold Miller, Dr. Theresa C. Smith has written a much-needed guidebook for expanding the communication, social, and problem solving skills of children with autism spectrum disorders. With heart-warming anecdotes and humorous “intermezzo”, Dr. Smith offers keen insight into the disordered perceptions and sensory sensitivities which evoke challenging behaviors and impede adjustment. More importantly, the book offers a treasure chest of surprisingly simple, yet highly effective strategies to help children navigate around underlying obstacles and make better sense of a chaotic environment. I highly recommend this invaluable resource to parents and caregivers, or anyone else for that matter, who wants to establish a genuine relationship and make a meaningful difference in the life of a child on the autism spectrum. -- Michael J. Kowalski , Principal and School Psychologist, Crossroads School, Westfield, New JerseyDr. Arnold Miller's name is known to many in the field of ASD through his writings about the need to harness the drives, obsessions, and compulsions of these youngsters transforming them into interactive exchanges that build communication and resilience. His interesting ideas and integration of theory and practice have appealed to many over the years. One problem has been a difficulty in translating his thoughtful and creative ideas into specific treatment approaches. Now this problem has been addressed with this new book by one of his long-time parent collaborators who describes 101 different intervention ideas and integrates them with the theoretical foundations that Dr. Miller and his followers thought were so important. What this book adds to Dr. Miller's appealing theory is many practical and easy to apply strategies that have proven successful in implementing his ideas and these practical activities will be of great interest to his long-time followers and newcomers to his ideas alike. -- Gary B. Mesibov, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill101 Tips for Parents of Children with Autism is an outstanding contribution to the field of autism spectrum disorders and fills the gap that currently exists in cognitive developmental therapeutic approaches to understanding and working with this population of children. The book will appeal to parents, teachers, clinicians, therapists and other professionals working with children on the autism spectrum. As a professor in a Faculty of Education, I will certainly introduce this text in my coursework for its generalizability to educational and clinical contexts. Congratulations to Dr. Theresa C. Smith for honoring Dr. Miller's legacy and capturing the essence of over 40 years of work. -- Dr. Sonia Mastrangelo, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Education, Lakehead University, Orilia Campus, Ontario, CanadaThis is an American book written by a parent of a child with autism who has read extensively around the subject... The book is a practical guide to accompany The Miller Method, a developmental approach used with children with autism....The strengths of the book are that it gives a lot of clear and practical suggestions for dealing with all the concerns parents of a child with ASD may have, including such things as communication difficulties, sensory concerns and challenging behaviours. Almost every behaviour or problem parents would have ismentioned, along with some accompanying ideas for management.... The book would certainly provide a good resource for teachers, therapists and parents. -- Kirsty Gilmour, Pediatric OT, The Evelina London Children's Community * Children, Young People & Families Occupational Therapy Journal *Table of ContentsPrologue. • The Partner's Guide to Asperger Syndrome

Jessica Kingsley Publishers The Partner's Guide to Asperger Syndrome

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAdults with Asperger Syndrome (AS) often have difficulties acquiring relationship skills due to the defining characteristics of the syndrome, experiences with peers during childhood and adolescence, and the expectations of their partners. However, an increasing number do go on to achieve happy and successful long-term relationships with non-spectrum (NS) partners. This supportive book will give NS partners a better understanding of NS/AS relationships, and of what other NS partners have found to be helpful in terms of better understanding themselves and their partners, and enriching their relationships. Drawing on interviews with over 100 people in NS/AS relationships, as well as on their own experiences of having family members on the autism spectrum, the authors explore the key differences which may impact upon AS/NS relationships, such as communication, social skills, and sensory issues, and offer tried-and-tested advice on how to surmount difficulties and make things work. The book includes chapters on coping with stress and meltdowns, parenting, positive AS qualities and how to use them to their full advantage in a relationship, as well as advice on how the NS partner can ensure that their own needs are met. This book will provide support and encouragement to those in a relationship with someone who has been diagnosed with AS, or who is suspected of having AS, and will also be a useful resource for counsellors and other professionals who wish to deepen their understanding of AS/NS relationships.Trade ReviewI enjoyed the book tremendously and found it an effortless read. I would recommend it for all mixed marriages/relationships (AS and non-AS), for the grown up children reared in these marriages, for there is a price paid, It should also be read by all marriage guidance counsellors and therapists who will more than likely encounter people on the spectrum (or their partners) and can do much harm if they do not understand the uniqueness of these relationships. -- asteensMoreno, founder of an autism non-profit, along with social worker Marci Wheeler and communication coach Kealah Parkinson, interviewed over 100 couples in which one partner has ASD and the other is nonspectrum (NS). Their aim: to provide insight and guidance to NS partners who want to create a successful relationship for both parties. While most of the advice is directed at the NS partner, there are also tips for parents, friends, and professionals on how to support the couple in maintaining a positive relationship. Each chapter ends with a list of "lessons learned" from the couples interviewed. The authors cover communication, social skills, and sensory processing and provide many real-life examples drawn from the experiences of the interviewed couples. Tony Attwood’s foreword highlights potential relationship problems that individuals with ASD typically encounter. VERDICT: Excellent insight and tips for anyone in, or considering, a relationship with a person with ASD, as well as the friends and families of couples with an ASD partner. -- Library JournalThis very clear book deepens our experience of autism and Asperger syndrome in adults, where it can be harder to detect and where partners may be managing and even camouflaging it. It is a valuable contribution, laden with advice that will make such couples feel less alone and know where to turn for help. -- Simon Baron-Cohen, FBA, Professor of Developmental Psychopathology, Director, Autism Research Centre, Cambridge University, UKMany individuals with Asperger syndrome have a desire to establish and maintain relationships with others. As with most couples, finding a balance between their own personality and character and meeting their partners' needs and expectations is challenging. This complex balance is explored in The Partner's Guide to Asperger Syndrome. The valuable information and tools provided in this book will help partners better understand one another, respect their differences, and work together to achieve fulfilling and long-lasting relationships. The book explores topics of communication, intimacy, and parenting along with other types of interpersonal relationships with regards to individuals with Asperger syndrome. This book will be useful for partners and professionals but mostly, its positive outlook will bring inspiration and encouragement to the entire AS community. -- Isabelle Hénault, author of Asperger's Syndrome and Sexuality: From Adolescence through AdulthoodPart of me cried when I read this book. I wish my mother had been able to read it when she was a young non-spectrum woman married to my father, a much older Aspie. It would have fundamentally changed her life - for the better. The Partner's Guide to Asperger Syndrome is more than a guide, it is a lifeline for any marriage mixed with AS. In fact, it is the lifeline this Aspie woman, married for 26 years to a man with many AS traits, absolutely needed to finally understand the complexities of our interpersonal dynamics. -- Liane Holliday Willey, Ed.D, author of Safety Skills for Women with Asperger Syndrome and Pretending to be NormalAdults with Asperger Syndrome (AS) have traditionally had difficulties with relationships but today more and more of them are getting involved in long-term commitments. Although this is a positive development and a real sign of how far so many have come, these relationships are not without their challenges for both the people with AS and also for their partners. Until now there have been few guidelines or resources for partners to help them understand some of the differences that they observe daily in their partners and to know how to respond to them. This book is an important step toward helping those partners to understand and live more comfortably and happily with their partners who have AS... Readers trying to manage these relationships, those trying to help them, and others who just want to understand what it is like to be involved with these charming, but often challenging partners, will find the insights of the authors and the partners to be intriguing, thought provoking, and a remarkable learning experience. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in intimate relationships involving individuals with AS. -- Gary B. Book SynopsisRate your pain on a scale of one to ten. What about on a scale of spicy to citrus? Is it more like a lava lamp or a mosaic? Pain, though a universal element of human experience, is dimly understood and sometimes barely managed. Pain Woman Takes Your Keys, and Other Essays from a Nervous System is a collection of literary and experimental essays about living with chronic pain.Trade Review"If this isn't the book that we in the pain community need in 2017, I don't know what is."—Matt Mendenhall, Pain-Free Living Magazine"The theorist Elaine Scarry, in her magnum opus The Body in Pain, writes, 'The utter rigidity of pain itself is that its resistance to language is not simply one of its incidental or accidental tributes but is essential to what it is.' One can see Sonya Huber's Pain Woman Takes Your Keys, and Other Essays from a Nervous System as a glorious refusal of what Scarry puts forth. With ardor and valor, Huber renders the lived experience of chronic pain and all that attends it in a language all her own, written—as she so wonderfully phrases it—using 'pain's alphabet.' These essays make imprecision their enemy as they comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. Pain Woman further establishes Sonya Huber as one of the most exciting voices writing creative nonfiction today." —Vincent Scarpa, Electric Literature "Sonya Huber has restored my faith in chronic illness narratives. . . . Now, if I have my way, this book will sneak its way into the lives of many future readers, regardless of their personal experience with chronic illness."—Taylor Wilke, Rumpus“Sonya Huber works magic by articulating the indescribable. With her lyrically written and witty account, she better describes her own pain experience than a patient rating scale of 1 to 10 ever could.”—Paula Kamen, author of All in My Head “This is an important book, a necessary book, a book that, in the right hands, could change how our medical establishment deals with pain. These essays are at once vulnerable and fierce, funny and smart, unflinching and dappled with stunning metaphor.”—Gayle Brandeis, author of Fruitflesh “Huber has captured what it is to be a woman who lives with chronic pain in all its nuanced complexity.”—Sarah Einstein, author of Mot: A MemoirTable of ContentsPreface Acknowledgments I. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Autism and Masking: How and Why People Do It, and

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAutistic people often feel they have to present as neurotypical or perform neurotypical social behaviours in order to fit in. So-called 'masking' is a social survival strategy used by autistic people in situations where neurodiversity is not understood or welcomed. While this is a commonly observed phenomenon in the autistic community, the complexities of masking are still not widely understood. This book combines the latest research with personal case studies detailing autistic experiences of masking. It explains what masking is and the various strategies used to mask in social situations. The research also delves into the psychology behind masking and the specifics of masking at school, at social events with peers, and at work. The book looks at the consequences of masking, including the toll it can have on mental and physical health, and suggests guidance for family, professionals, and employers to ameliorate negative effects. With a diverse range of voices, including perspectives across gender, ethnicity and age, this is the comprehensive guide to masking and how to support autistic people who mask.Trade ReviewThe understanding of masking has been in my thinking regarding the diagnosis of autism for many years. Sadly, clinicians continue to have a narrow view manifested in stereotyped ways. This book rectifies this misconception and addresses the different types of masking and its implications. The excellent combination of research, evidence and anecdotal quotes makes for fascinating reading. All ages are covered together with practical advice on masking in different social situations - crucial for all those working and supporting others on the autism spectrum. -- Dr Judith Gould, Consultant Clinical Psychologist the NAS Lorna Wing CentreAutism and Masking is a book that should be on every Autism professional and Autistic person's bookshelf as standard. Masking is dangerously often seen as advantageous "you can act as normal!" but the consequences of suppressing an Autistic person's authenticity can be life threatening. Dr Felicity Sedgewick, Dr Laura Hull and Helen Ellis have created a bible of a masking book that demonstrates why and how masking occurs, how masking leaves Autistic people vulnerable and how to help. A much needed, well-written book that provides a friendly, supportive, and kind experience, demystifying a misunderstood subject for professionals and highlighting the damaging life experience for Autistic people. -- Carly Jones MBE, autism advocate and author of Safeguarding Autistic Girls: Strategies for Professionals
