Book SynopsisJ.M. Barrie''s timeless tale of the ''boy who would not grow up'' Peter Pan is edited with an introduction by Jack Zipes in Penguin Classics. When Peter Pan and his fairy companion Tinker Bell fly in through the window of Wendy''s nursery one night, it is the beginning of an adventure that whisks Wendy and her brothers Michael and John off to Neverland. There they will find mermaids, fairies, pirates led by the sinister Captain Hook, and the crocodile who bit off his leg - and still pursues him in hope of the rest! Peter Pan originally appeared as a baby living a magical life among birds and fairies in J.M. Barrie''s sequence of stories, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. His adventures capture the spirit of childhood - and of rebellion against the role of adulthood in conventional society. This edition includes the novel and the stories, and reproduces the original illustrations by Francis Donkin Bedford and Arthur Rackham. In his introduction, Jack Zipes sifts through the psychological interpretations that have engaged critics, explores the cultural and literary contexts in which we can appreciate Barrie''s enduring creation, and shows why Peter Pan is fundamentally a work that urges adults to reconnect with their own imagination.James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937) was born in Scotland, the son of a weaver. In 1885, he moved to London to pursue a literary career. Peter Pan, with its flying and theatrical devices, was a huge success and continues to be performed today; in 1911 Barrie rewrote the play as a novel. On his death in 1937 Barrie gifted copyright of the play Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street hospital. If you enjoyed Peter Pan you might like Lewis Carroll''s Alice''s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, also available in Penguin Classics.''One of the classic children''s stories of all time''Daily Mail''Intensely moving as well as enchanting in its evocation of childhood, the heartlessness of youth and parental grief as children grow older''Daily TelegraphTrade Review“Barrie wrote his fantasy of childhood, added another figure to our enduring literature, and thereby undoubtedly made one of the boldest bids for immortality of any writer. . . . Book SynopsisFor twenty-six years after his first mention of the character, J.M. Barrie worked on the story of Peter Pan as he appeared through different incarnations: the three-act play Peter Pan, or the Boy who Wouldn’t Grow Up (1904), the illustrated novella Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens (1906), the Epilogue to the play “An After Thought” (1908), the full-length novel Peter and Wendy (1911), two short stories, and finally a longer version of the original play. This edition of Peter Pan includes not only the novel and revised play as they were first published, but also an earlier novella and the previously unpublished original play.Appendices include materials from Barrie’s personal writings and contemporary reviews and illustrations.Trade Review“A unique achievement—the bringing together of Barrie’s various and scattered Peter Pan texts within a single volume. As such it is an absolute gift to Peter Pan devotees, containing as it does much material that is otherwise unavailable to the general reader. An added bonus is the inclusion of numerous contemporary reviews for both the play of 1904 and the later novelization of 1911.” — Andrew Birkin, author of J.M. Barrie and The Lost Boys“This edition of Peter Pan is an exemplary work of scholarship, giving us not only the 1911 edition of the full novelization of this much edited and reproduced story, but also the 1904 slim pantomime version never before published, “An Afterthought” (1908), and the 1906 novella Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. The reader has in this edition a thorough exposure to this complicated text. Alton has chosen the Appendices carefully and wisely. Her Introduction meticulously covers the complicated history of the writing, editing, performing, and publishing of this famous story. And she provides us with a review of the major critical responses to the story. This edition of Peter Pan is simply the best we have.” — Roderick McGillis, The University of CalgaryTable of ContentsAcknowledgementsIntroductionJ.M. Barrie's masterpiece remains a stirring call to flights of imagination. With a magic and emotional appeal unmatched by any other story, Barrie’s Peter Pan speaks directly to childhood’s dreams and desires with an imaginative genius that evokes both laughter and tears. Peter, the boy would wouldn’t grow up; Nana, the Darling children’s nurse and pet Newfoundland; deliciously dreadful Captain Hook, who is stalked by a crocodile with a clock in his stomach; and Tinker Bell, “quite a common fairy,” who swears like a sailor and is murderously jealous—these characters of startling originality are rich, funny, mischievously insightful, and a joy to read about again and again. The result is a masterpiece of literature that has been working its timeless wonderment on us since it first appeared.   With an Afterword by Alison Lurie Illustrated by Sergio Martinez

Book SynopsisMrs. Darling dozes in the nursery as her children sleep. Suddenly, the window bursts open, and Peter Pan, the boy who refuses to grow up, flies in. Seeing a grown-up in the room, he gnashes his perfect set of pearly baby teeth at her. The children's nurse, Nana, a Newfoundland dog, gallops in and chases the boy out the window, slamming it shut with her paws. Peter escapes just in time, but his shadow is not so lucky. Now it is trapped in the nursery, and everyone knows he will come back for it. When he does, Wendy, John, and Michael will begin the greatest adventure any siblings have ever had. Peter whisks the children off to Neverland to meet the Lost Boys, Tinker Bell the fairy, and Princess Tiger Lily. Together, they wage fierce battles against the evil Captain Hook and his dreaded band of ruthless pirates, whose only goal in life, it seems, is to destroy Peter and his friends.

Book SynopsisThe eternally youthful Peter Pan encounters Wendy and her brothers, who decide to join him in Neverland and never grow old. Their plans do not reckon with either the sinister Captain Hook or the unsuspected dark side of perpetual childhood. Peter Pan’s story began as a play in 1904 and met with immediate success. The author converted it into a novel in 1911 to similar acclaim. His story has appeared on stage, television, live action film and animated cartoon. Peter’s adventures with Wendy take place in a glorious world of imagination, where fairies and Wild Boys are boon companions in swashbuckling conflict with wild beasts and pirates. But in Peter and Wendy we can see another conflict, that between the love of family and responsibility of the adult world and the carefree, impulsive freedom of childhood. This is truly a tale to be appreciated equally, yet differently, by both children and grown-ups. This dual appeal, and the lasting, fundamental charisma of Peter himself, have made Peter Pan both enjoyable and relevant for each new generation. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Peter Pan is both modern and readable.

Book SynopsisMargaret Ogilvy (1897) is a biography by J. M. Barrie. Although he is more widely known as a popular storyteller whose Peter Pan books are filled with the wit and wonder of history’s greatest fairytales, Barrie was also a gifted memoirist and biographer. Margaret Ogilvy is the story of his mother and their life as a family in Scotland. Written in tribute to her influence on his life as a professional writer, Margaret Ogilvy was a bestselling book in the United States. “On the day I was born we bought six hair-bottomed chairs, and in our little house it was an event, the first great victory in a woman’s long campaign; how they had been laboured for, the pound-note and the thirty threepenny-bits they cost, what anxiety there was about the purchase, the show they made in possession of the west room, my father’s unnatural coolness when he brought them in…” From the remnants of memory, J. M. Barrie attempts to reconstruct his mother’s life. He begins with tragedy, the death of his older brother, an event which changed his mother forever. From then on, he writes, “she got her soft face and her pathetic ways and her large charity,” but before she could turn her loss into positive energy she struggled immensely with what would now be called depression. As he tries to express his gratitude for her sacrifice and support, Barrie crafts a loving portrait of the woman who gave him life. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of J. M. Barrie’s Margaret Ogilvy is a classic work of Scottish literature reimagined for modern readers.
