    Book SynopsisTo travel through Italy is as close as one gets to being in paradise. For centuries, writers, artists, architects, and merchants have been drawn here, inspired by the beauty of Venice, Florence, Naples, and Rome. Countless books, paintings, poems, and sculptures are evidence of its undying appeal, and over the past 60 years, the country has become one of the world’s top travel and holiday destinations. The loveliness of Italy is, if not eternal, certainly enduring, and the easygoing and relaxed Italian lifestyle is still unrivaled. Here, some of Italy’s most amazing landscapes and diverse regions are honored, like Tuscany, Umbria, the Amalfi Coast, and, no less magical, the Aeolian Islands off the coast of Sicily. In these mythical surroundings are legendary hotels full of atmosphere, where novels are set, movies are made, weddings are celebrated, and famous love stories consummated: Villa d’Este on Lake Como, the Pellicano Hotel in Porto Ercole, the Il San Pietro on the Amalfi Coast, and the Palazzo Margherita in Basilicata—to name just a few. • Great Escapes USA. The Hotel Book

    Taschen GmbH Great Escapes USA. The Hotel Book

    2 in stock

    Book SynopsisThe USA is one of the most varied and fascinating countries in the world. Its areas of natural beauty such as the Pacific Coast, the Yosemite National Park, and Monument Valley are the stuff of great cinema (Hollywood finds its best settings practically in its backyard). For everyone who explores the USA beyond its big cities on a classic road trip, on the trail of Native Americans and pioneers, in the mountains or by lakes and beaches, unforgettable moments are guaranteed. In Great Escapes USA, Angelika Taschen presents remarkable places to stay through impressive photography, entertaining texts, and practical details on how to get there, prices, and tips for books and films. Her journey starts on the East Coast, where intellectuals and artists once met in idyllically located country houses such as the Twin Farms in Vermont and Troutbeck in New York State. It continues to the South, where The Moorings Village and Hôtel Peter & Paul, for example, tell of the history of Florida and Louisiana, and Southern belles such as the Commodore Perry Estate in Austin, Texas reveal their glamor. Dunton Hot Springs, once a miners’ camp in Colorado, now transformed from a ghost town to an upscale rustic resort, lies on the route, just like the urban utopia that is Arcosanti in Arizona, conceived by the architect Paolo Soleri in the 1970s. The trip comes to a wonderful conclusion in California with unique hotels such as Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn, where many famous writers have stayed in the Norwegian-influenced wooden cabins, laid-back motels like The Surfrider Malibu, which is all about the California dream, and heavenly destinations for gourmets, for example SingleThread in Sonoma County with its three Michelin stars. The photography in this opulent publication presents hotels in the tradition of great architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright as well as the work of young contemporary designers and buildings in the typical American mid-century style. A horse ranch, a glamping site, even a hippie bathhouse and vintage mobile homes are also included – places as varied as the USA itself.Trade Review“The ultimate US travel guide.” * robbreport.com *“Highlights American hotels worthy as destinations all on their own.” * washintgonpost.com *“A collection of the country’s most notable, destination-worthy lodges, inns, cabins, resorts, and more.” * cntraveler.com *“…flip through the pages of Great Escapes USA. In 1887, Grand Hotel was built on the island to accommodate a new leisure class. Today, horse-drawn carriages (no motorised vehicles are allowed) still bring guests to the 660-foot-long porch to catch the breezes off the Great Lakes.When the Musser family - the owners of the hotel - brought in designer Carleton Varney, a 40-year relationship began, as did an ongoing mission to renovate, update, and create the guest rooms, public spaces, and outer buildings of Grand Hotel. That project continues today. (The job of decorating is never done, says the designer.)     Book SynopsisIn 1963, the savvy owners of the Cove Haven Resort in the Poconos unveiled their heart-shaped tub. Like Elvis Presley and Playboy magazine, it launched a post-war phenomenon that defined a new era of pop pleasure: the honeymoon hotel. Destinations across the country were soon racing to catch up, installing not just heart-shaped tubs but all types of over-the-top design flourishes, from pink shag carpeting to immersive worlds worthy of a Broadway stage set, in order to create a sense of romance, fantasy, even adventure.From the photographers and inveterate travellers behind the social media sensation A Pretty Cool Hotel Tour, Hotel Kitsch celebrates dozens of creative, nostalgic, one-of-a-kind hotels that span the heart of the Poconos and across the United States to Mexico, Spain, and the UK. Discover, in the middle of Iowa, a jungle room with fake trees and foliage surrounding the bed as if it had taken its cue from Where the Wild Things Are. Or Jules' Undersea Lodge in Key Largo where the rooms are reached by scuba diving. An Arctic Cave room at a hotel in Kentucky with its carved blue walls and not a window to be found. And on the California coast, the iconic Madonna Inn featuring 110 rooms, each themed and no two alike.Along the way, authors Margaret and Corey Bienert uncover too many wild details to mention, including unconventional beds (a Cadillac, a clamshell, a sandwich), mirrors on mirrors on mirrors, in-room swimming pools, full suits of armour, and fibre-optic star ceilings.While it's not a travel guide, every destination in Hotel Kitsch is open for business.     Book SynopsisFrom the earliest resthouses serving travelers on the Overland Route between Britain and Bombay to the grand Edwardian palaces on the Nile that made Egypt the exotic alternative to wintering on the Riviera, the hotels of Alexandria, Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan were always about far more than just bed and board. As bridgeheads for African exploration, neutral territories for conducting diplomacy, headquarters for armies, providers of home comforts for writers, painters, scholars, and archaeologists in the field, and social hubs for an international elite, more of importance happened in Egypt's hotels than in any other setting. It was through the hotels that visitors from the west-the earliest adventurers, then the travelers and, finally, the tourists-experienced the Orient. This book tells the stories of Egypt's historic hotels (including the Cecil, Shepheard's, the Mena House, Gezira Palace, Semiramis, Winter Palace, and Cataract) and some of the people who stayed in them, from Amelia Edwards, Lucie Duff Gordon and Florence Nightingale to Agatha Christie, Conan Doyle, Winston Churchill, and TE Lawrence.Trade Review"Humphreys has a great talent for taking contemporary writing and using it to portray a coherent and fully visual impression of each town, hotel and its occupants, bringing the life of Westerners in Egypt to life"--Egyptological"We must thank Andrew Humphreys for providing a real treat for his readers"--Deborah Manley, ASTENE review." . . perhaps one of the most interesting books we have seen in a long time; with most of the information collected by reading old travel journals and interviewing people.     Book SynopsisThe Mediterranean is surrounded by three continents – Europe, Africa and Asia – and even though the cultures around this sea are highly diverse, they harmoniously share a pleasant climate, distinctive flora and fauna, and not least the intense blue of the water. Angelika Taschen set out in search of the most beautiful hotels on a great variety of coasts, islands and beaches, taking you on a journey to the luxurious Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc and the ultra-chic Les Roches Rouges on the Côte d’Azur, to the little-known Pardini’s Hermitage on the Italian island of Giglio, which is only accessible by boat or on foot, and to Bodrum in Turkey, where the elegant Amanruya resort lies hidden in one of the most stunning bays in the Mediterranean. She also presents new hotel concepts, great architecture and creative design – such as the finca Menorca Experimental on the Balearic Islands, the modernist Villa Dubrovnik in Croatia and Dexamenes on the Peloponnese, where new life was breathed into decommissioned wine tanks. Further highlights are the brand-new, stylishly designed Mezzatorre on Ischia and the Torre di Cala Piccola with its enchanting private beach on the Argentario peninsula in Tuscany, an almost unknown location that possesses the aura of 1960s Italy. Another gem is La Locanda del Barbablù, with just five rooms in the shadow of the mythical volcano on Stromboli. Look forward to staying at the Nord-Pinus in Tangier with its fantastic view of the Strait of Gibraltar, and the charming Coco-Mat Eco Residences on Serifos, or experiencing the originality of Ammos on Crete, where the art and design are as essential as the sun and the beach.Trade Review“All places where you can melt away from the problems of the real world.” * Living North Magazine *“Wonderful to look at.     Book SynopsisOver the last decade, human resource management has come to be viewed as the dominant paradigm within which analyses of the world of work have been located. This volume examines the nature and assesses the impact of HRM within a highly under-researched division of the service sector, namely the UK hotel industry. Common perceptions of management practices in the hotel industry typically include work intensification, high labour turnover, lack of training and poor career prospects, and casualised terms and conditions of employment. Using data from a survey of over 200 hotels, this book challenges such stereotypes by demonstrating that this part of the service sector is just as likely to have experimented with new approaches to HRM as the manufacturing industry. It suggests that primary influences on managerial decision-making in the hotel industry are no different from the primary influences affecting decision-making elsewhere, countering the argument that mainstream management tTrade Review'...this book is a signal contribution to our understanding of major hotel employment relations...In more ways than one, this book is a valuable, welcome addition to a more balanced literature.' - Journal of Industrial Relations September 2001Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction and framework for analysis; Chapter 2 Is there a role for HRM in the hotel industry?; Chapter 3 New approaches toHRM in the hotel industry; Chapter 4 Influences on HRM in the hotelindustry; Chapter 5 HRM in practice in the hotelindustry; Chapter 6 HRM and performance in the hotel industry; Chapter 7 Conclusion; Bibliography; INDEX;

    Book SynopsisMobility has long been a defining feature of modern societies, yet remarkably little attention has been paid to the various ''stopping places''_hotels, motels, and the like_that this mobility presupposes. If the paradoxical qualities of fixed places dedicated to facilitating movement have been overlooked by a variety of commentators, film-makers have shown remarkable prescience and consistency in engaging with these ''still points'' around which the world is made to turn. Hotels and motels play a central role in a multitude of films, ranging across an immensely wide variety of genres, eras, and national cinemas. Whereas previous film theorists have focused on the movement implied by road movies and similar genres, the outstanding contributions to this volume extend the recent engagement with space and place in film studies, providing a series of fascinating explorations of the cultural significance of stopping places, both on screen and off. Ranging from the mythical elegance of the GrTrade ReviewMoving Pictures/Stopping Places should appeal to both the structuralists and the post-structuralists among us. The editors certainly extol the multiple discourses presented in the book...This is a book that one can dip into when looking for theoretical insights into particular accommodation spaces or to explore analysis that situates the hotel and motel at the intersection of both social imaginaries and lived realities....In reading Moving Pictures/Stopping Places those working within hospitality studies should be encouraged to question the borders and boundaries in which their own particular knowledge is sought and produced. As such, this book certainly fulfills the call in the initial editorial for this journal to ‘share insights derived from various backgrounds, engage in vigorous debate and contribute to the intellectual possibilities for the investigation of hospitality’. If we are to do so, this book gainfully works towards and supports Lugosi’s aim of challenging orthodox epistemology's within hospitality and tourism studies more broadly. Thus, and to paraphrase Levi-Strauss, Moving Pictures/Stopping Places is a book that (re)presents hotels and motels as ‘good to think’. * Hospitality & Society *Table of ContentsChapter 1 Checking In Chapter 2 Revisiting the Grand Hotel (and Its Place in the Cultural Economy of Fascist Italy) Chapter 3 Floating Hotels: Cruise Holidays and Amateur Film-making in the Inter-War Period Chapter 4 Vacancies: Hotels, Reception Desks, and Identity in American Cinema, 1929–1964 Chapter 5 The Swiss Hotel Film Chapter 6 Cinematic Topographies in Time-Space: Wim Wenders' Hotels Chapter 7 The Decay of Fiction and the Poetics of Pastness Chapter 8 'Now, Where Was I?': Memories, Motels, and Male Hysteria Chapter 9 'Just an Anonymous Room': Cinematic Hotels and Motels as Mnemonic Purgatories Chapter 10 No Sympathy for the Devil or Lobby Music: Spaces of Disjunction in Barton Fink and the The Shining and Muzak Chapter 11 Parallel Hotel Worlds Chapter 12 No Quarter(s), No Camel(s), No Exit(s): Motel Cactus and the Low Heterotopias of Seoul Chapter 13 Off the Highway: Some Notes on Stopping Places in Cinema Chapter 14 The Real of the Screen: Atom Egoyan's Speaking Parts Chapter 15 Departure: The 21st Century Hotel: Your Media/Home Away from Home
