Taschen GmbH Great Escapes Italy. The Hotel Book
Book SynopsisTo travel through Italy is as close as one gets to being in paradise. For centuries, writers, artists, architects, and merchants have been drawn here, inspired by the beauty of Venice, Florence, Naples, and Rome. Countless books, paintings, poems, and sculptures are evidence of its undying appeal, and over the past 60 years, the country has become one of the world’s top travel and holiday destinations. The loveliness of Italy is, if not eternal, certainly enduring, and the easygoing and relaxed Italian lifestyle is still unrivaled. Here, some of Italy’s most amazing landscapes and diverse regions are honored, like Tuscany, Umbria, the Amalfi Coast, and, no less magical, the Aeolian Islands off the coast of Sicily. In these mythical surroundings are legendary hotels full of atmosphere, where novels are set, movies are made, weddings are celebrated, and famous love stories consummated: Villa d’Este on Lake Como, the Pellicano Hotel in Porto Ercole, the Il San Pietro on the Amalfi Coast, and the Palazzo Margherita in Basilicata—to name just a few. Angelika Taschen also reveals where to find more secret and hidden jewels—from the Locanda Cipriani, a destination for food lovers on the island of Torcello, to the romantic Castello di Vicarello in Tuscany and the atmospheric Masseria Moroseta in Puglia.Trade Review“All places where you can melt away from the problems of the real world.” * Living North Magazine *“This illustrated book awakens desire. Taschen GmbH Great Escapes USA. The Hotel Book
Book SynopsisThe USA is one of the most varied and fascinating countries in the world. Its areas of natural beauty such as the Pacific Coast, the Yosemite National Park, and Monument Valley are the stuff of great cinema (Hollywood finds its best settings practically in its backyard). For everyone who explores the USA beyond its big cities on a classic road trip, on the trail of Native Americans and pioneers, in the mountains or by lakes and beaches, unforgettable moments are guaranteed. In Great Escapes USA, Angelika Taschen presents remarkable places to stay through impressive photography, entertaining texts, and practical details on how to get there, prices, and tips for books and films. Her journey starts on the East Coast, where intellectuals and artists once met in idyllically located country houses such as the Twin Farms in Vermont and Troutbeck in New York State. It continues to the South, where The Moorings Village and Hôtel Peter & Paul, for example, tell of the history of Florida and Louisiana, and Southern belles such as the Commodore Perry Estate in Austin, Texas reveal their glamor. Dunton Hot Springs, once a miners’ camp in Colorado, now transformed from a ghost town to an upscale rustic resort, lies on the route, just like the urban utopia that is Arcosanti in Arizona, conceived by the architect Paolo Soleri in the 1970s. The trip comes to a wonderful conclusion in California with unique hotels such as Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn, where many famous writers have stayed in the Norwegian-influenced wooden cabins, laid-back motels like The Surfrider Malibu, which is all about the California dream, and heavenly destinations for gourmets, for example SingleThread in Sonoma County with its three Michelin stars. The photography in this opulent publication presents hotels in the tradition of great architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright as well as the work of young contemporary designers and buildings in the typical American mid-century style. A horse ranch, a glamping site, even a hippie bathhouse and vintage mobile homes are also included – places as varied as the USA itself.Trade Review“The ultimate US travel guide.” * robbreport.com *“Highlights American hotels worthy as destinations all on their own.” * washintgonpost.com *“A collection of the country’s most notable, destination-worthy lodges, inns, cabins, resorts, and more.” * cntraveler.com *“…flip through the pages of Great Escapes USA. Workman Publishing Hotel Kitsch: A Pretty Cool Tour of America’s
Book SynopsisIn 1963, the savvy owners of the Cove Haven Resort in the Poconos unveiled their heart-shaped tub. Like Elvis Presley and Playboy magazine, it launched a post-war phenomenon that defined a new era of pop pleasure: the honeymoon hotel. Destinations across the country were soon racing to catch up, installing not just heart-shaped tubs but all types of over-the-top design flourishes, from pink shag carpeting to immersive worlds worthy of a Broadway stage set, in order to create a sense of romance, fantasy, even adventure.From the photographers and inveterate travellers behind the social media sensation A Pretty Cool Hotel Tour, Hotel Kitsch celebrates dozens of creative, nostalgic, one-of-a-kind hotels that span the heart of the Poconos and across the United States to Mexico, Spain, and the UK. Discover, in the middle of Iowa, a jungle room with fake trees and foliage surrounding the bed as if it had taken its cue from Where the Wild Things Are. Or Jules' Undersea Lodge in Key Largo where the rooms are reached by scuba diving. An Arctic Cave room at a hotel in Kentucky with its carved blue walls and not a window to be found. And on the California coast, the iconic Madonna Inn featuring 110 rooms, each themed and no two alike.Along the way, authors Margaret and Corey Bienert uncover too many wild details to mention, including unconventional beds (a Cadillac, a clamshell, a sandwich), mirrors on mirrors on mirrors, in-room swimming pools, full suits of armour, and fibre-optic star ceilings.While it's not a travel guide, every destination in Hotel Kitsch is open for business. Taylor & Francis Human Resource Management in the Hotel Industry
Book SynopsisOver the last decade, human resource management has come to be viewed as the dominant paradigm within which analyses of the world of work have been located. This volume examines the nature and assesses the impact of HRM within a highly under-researched division of the service sector, namely the UK hotel industry. Common perceptions of management practices in the hotel industry typically include work intensification, high labour turnover, lack of training and poor career prospects, and casualised terms and conditions of employment. Using data from a survey of over 200 hotels, this book challenges such stereotypes by demonstrating that this part of the service sector is just as likely to have experimented with new approaches to HRM as the manufacturing industry. It suggests that primary influences on managerial decision-making in the hotel industry are no different from the primary influences affecting decision-making elsewhere, countering the argument that mainstream management tTrade Review'...this book is a signal contribution to our understanding of major hotel employment relations...In more ways than one, this book is a valuable, welcome addition to a more balanced literature.' - Journal of Industrial Relations September 2001Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction and framework for analysis; Chapter 2 Is there a role for HRM in the hotel industry?; Chapter 3 New approaches toHRM in the hotel industry; Chapter 4 Influences on HRM in the hotelindustry; Chapter 5 HRM in practice in the hotelindustry; Chapter 6 HRM and performance in the hotel industry; Chapter 7 Conclusion; Bibliography; INDEX;

University of California Press The Lure of the Beach
Book SynopsisA human and global take on a beloved vacation spot. The crash of surf, smell of salted air, wet whorls of sand underfoot. These are the sensations of the beach, that environment that has drawn humans to its life-sustaining shores for millennia. And while the gull's cry and the cove's splendor have remained constant throughout time, our relationship with the beach has been as fluid as the runnels left behind by the tide's turning. The Lure of the Beach is a chronicle of humanity's history with the coast, taking us from the seaside pleasure palaces of Roman elites and the aquatic rituals of medieval pilgrims, to the venues of modern resort towns and beyond. Robert C. Ritchie traces the contours of the material and social economies of the beach throughout time, covering changes in the social status of beach goers, the technology of transport, and the development of fashion (from nudity to Victorianism and back again), as well as the geographic spread of modern beach-going from EnglanTrade Review"Ritchie's book is both engagingly written and thoroughly scholarly." * Geography Realm *"The Lure of the Beach is a thoroughly researched, interesting social history. . . .a landmark text." * Technology & Culture *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgments Introduction 1. University Press of Florida Beach and Coastal Camping in Florida
Book SynopsisA guide to the campgrounds for tent, van, and trailer camping in coastal Florida.Trade Review"One of the book's strong points is you will not arrive unannounced at a place which disappoints you.... Molloy's writing is no-nonsense, precise, and he covers a lot of ground, both figuratively and metaphorically. His subjects include 'what to do' and 'what's nearby.' Here we have an essential resource book for anyone who ventures out of doors with a tent and a hankering to go pitch it somewhere." - Outdoor Adventure Magazine "Gives readers nuts and bolts about camping in state and national parks where land meets the water from the Gulf Islands National Seashore near Pensacola to Bahia Honda State Park near Marathon." - Palm Beach Post "A fine new guidebook to help us find just the right spot for outdoor fun.... Packed with useful information for people who want to enjoy Florida's seashores." - Vero Beach Press-Journal "Beach and Coastal Camping in Florida is not just a listing of places to camp and how to get there. Molloy gives detailed descriptions of parks and recreation areas along the coasts of Florida with pictures, key information with directions and fees, descriptions of the beach areas, pertinent details about the campgrounds, the history of the area, what to do and what's nearby. In fact, if your idea of camping is a suite at the Hilton, you might even find yourself enticed into trying camping after reading some of these descriptions." - Tallahassee Democrat"
