  • A Beginner's Guide to Knitting on a Loom (New

Search Press Ltd A Beginner's Guide to Knitting on a Loom (New

Book SynopsisFor those who have struggled in the past to knit with needles, loom knitting is an easy craft to master which children and adults alike can learn in a few hours. Loom knitting is a revolutionary way of knitting that uses a circular or rectangular loom, or knitting board, consisting of a frame with pegs. Looms are easy and fun to use, even without conventional knitting experience. An individual can create almost anything, from knitted tubes for hats or socks to flat panels for scarves, shawls and sweaters. This new and updated book is designed as an essential reference and a hands-on project resource for the loom knitter. The first part of the book provides loom-knitting techniques for both round and rectangular looms, and knitting boards. An inspiring design section presents more than 35 patterns to get the new loom-knitter started. Also included are a handy stitch pattern section and a glossary of techniques.Trade ReviewGreat book! It's very well explained and really does treat you like a beginner. I love the simple instructions and that it has pictures which help show each stage. It has some really cute projects which would make lovely handmade presents for family and friends. It's also good that it has pictures for each project so you know what you're aiming for! * Caroline Bourne * I am completely new to Loom Knitting although I can knit the traditional way! I'm now inspired to go and purchase a loom - I never realised the looms were so versatile - I thought all that could be made were hats! Also amazed that you can do several different stitches. The pictures are clear and seem very easy to follow. My first project will be the beautiful cowl! * Shelagh Bird *another new hobby for me to learn the book is clear and easy to understand covers all the things you need to start plus patterns /projects * Lynne Hart *I have never tried this before but this is a fantastic book with clear and precise instructions * Denise Bonham *I've looked at the book, as a beginner, and can't believe how detailed it is. I am awaiting arrival of a loom, but am looking forward to trying at during the holidays. It looks like it will be getting a lot of use between me & the kids. A joy to read * Colleen Allison *Even though i can knit and crochet it is nice to be able to learn something a bit different , i find the book clear to understand with loads of patterns that i can't wait to get started on, it even tells you what tools you need very precise ,suitable for beginners and poeple like me that already have skills , great book * Julie Dawn *I received a free copy of this book from Search Press. The book itself is a good manageable size. I love the cover design and all the colour pictures within, they really help to make it feel uplifting and inspiring. The information within is set out in easy to read sections with lots of pictures to help. The topics covered are comprehensive and the patterns are for adults and children, and all really wearable items. I think this is a great book for anyone wanting to start out with their loom. * Cherry Edwards *I'd never heard of knitting on a loom before so I definitely needed a book for beginners. This fits the bill perfectly. It starts with advice on what equipment there is and how to decide what to buy which is really helpful. Advice on yarn is helpful and means the book would be suitable even if you're not experienced in normal knitting. The techniques are explained with clear pictures in a logical sequence. And of course you then want to crack on and make something so there is a good selection of patterns. Most of these are quite small items so look like they would be satisfying to complete. I find hats and socks quite tricky on normal knitting needles so am looking forward to getting myself a some equipment to try those. * Heather Haig *Loom knitting is a craft I haven't tried yet and have wanted to try making a sock with a loom, The book explains about all the different Looms there are,the stitches, and also felting. The instructions are so easy to follow specially as there are pictures as well. The patterns are all things I would try, usually I find that books have things in it I would never dream of making. Defintely recommend this book. * Kathy Downing *

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFor both experienced and beginner knitters, this is an inspirational collection of favourite motifs found in the traditional knitting of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and the Faroe Islands, including charming motifs of stars, hearts, flowers, leaping reindeer and dancers, as well as delightful geometric patterns, and more. Each motif is shown as a hand-knitted swatch, illustrated with clear, life-sized photographs and accompanied by easy-to-read colour charts, and a reverse colourway suggestion. With clear details on reading colour charts, and a full review of techniques for two-colour knitting, this book also gives advice on incorporating the Scandinavian motifs into a variety of different projects, allowing you to create unique designs. Includes guidance on choosing yarns, use of colour, and finishing techniques to help you hone your knitting skills and create stylish projects.Trade ReviewAug 13 The Scandinavian vibe continues to be a huge trend heading into summer, as it still reels from its winter success. This book certainly taps into the fashion with 100 authentic designs found in the traditional knitting of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Suitable for both beginner and advanced knitters, it is a collection of inspirational patterns and charming motifs, including flowers, hearts and stars. Each motif is shown as a hand-knitted swatch, illustrated with clear, life-sized photographs and accompanied by easy to read colour charts and a reverse colourway suggestion. With clear details on reading colour charts and a full review of techniques for two-colour knitting, the book also gives advice on incorporating the Scandinavian motifs into a variety of different projects, allowing readers to create their own designs. The techniques and information are basic enough to appeal to knitters and those needing a refresher too. * Craft Business *Sept 13 Following on from 200 Fair-Isle Designs, Mary is back with colourful Scandinavian knitting. Some of the designs will strike you as more obviously Scandinavian than others. Actual size swatches are shown together with charts and alternative colourways for the designs. The charts are easy to use. For all levels of knitters used to working with more than one colour of yarn, this is a useful book. Essential techniques are given for those unfamiliar with colour knitting. It includes symbols and motifs, animals, flowers and traditional geometric patterns. You can combine the designs to make your own unique patterns. There are also four projects included for you to make – a cowl, hat, mittens and pincushion. Great for those who like to design their own knitwear. * Karen Platt Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts *Oct 13 This is such a great resource book for those looking for fairisle knitting designs. However, it's not just a dictionary of design but also a guide to more advanced knitting, such as steeking and designing garments. It's so accessible but gently stretching too. There are 29 pages on increasing, decreasing, working in the round and holding the yarn with heaps of tips for working with two or more colours. I've always loved going at my own pace with knitting, gradually teaching myself all the techniques one at a time, then coasting for a while until I get bored. I do feel as if I want to try the hat above, maybe in my favourite colour combo - white and red. There are four projects at the back of the book to knit - a cowl, a hat, mittens and a pincushion. The rest of the book is comprised of 168 design charts with an example swatch to show you what it looks like. There are black and white charts as well as colour charts and alternative colourway charts to inspire you. I love the Scandinavian look. The jumpers have really come back into fashion again, so maybe now is the time to knit your own? http://sewingisforgirls.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/150-scandinavian-knitting-designs-by.html * sewingisforgirls.blogspot.com *Jan 14 Scandi-style is more popular than ever and now you can incorporate the traditional designs into your knits with the patterns in Mary Jane's book. It's a veritable feast, packed with (yes, you guessed it) 150 different designs to use on winter sweaters, yokes, hats, gloves and more. Four patterns, for a hat, cowl, mittens and a pincushion, are also given. Helpfully, the swatches are all printed at actual size and essential instructions are given for those who are unfamiliar with colour knitting. * Knit Today *If you enjoy doing colourwork then this book has a wealth of ideas from single animal motifs to overall ideas for designs for bigger projects. It would be easy to mix and match the patterns to create your own designs. The charts are colour coded to the swatches and there is a second colourway suggestion to get one’s imagination going. There are great ideas for adding bits of fair isle to a garment, hat or cushion cover. I like the fact that the photographed swatches are real in size. An added extra are some simple patterns for a beginner who is new to fair isle to follow. The book also contains helpful hints for a knitter including different cast ons, how to steek and blocking and finishing techniques. I would highly recommend this book to add to your library. -- Monica Russel – Knitting DesignerIf you enjoy doing colourwork then this book has a wealth of ideas from single animal motifs to overall ideas for designs for bigger projects. • 100 Flowers to Knit & Crochet (new edition): A

Search Press Ltd 100 Flowers to Knit & Crochet (new edition): A

Book SynopsisThis 15th anniversary edition of the best-selling book 100 Flowers to Knit and Crochet, with over 130,000 copies sold! An utterly delightful collection of designs for any knitting or crochet enthusiast, it not only includes the most beautiful flowers and leaves, but also a wonderful, whimsical collection of fruit and vegetables as well as butterflies. As most of the projects use only small amounts of yarn, it is the perfect way to use up scraps, or practise using novelty yarns. You can use them to decorate clothing, hats, bags and belts, embellish home accessories, or make a beautiful bouquet as an unusual display piece. There are so many flowers to choose from that there is sure to be something you will love, from simple spiral roses and two-tone fuchsias, to elaborate layered blooms and fabulous felted flowers. The flowers are beautifully arranged on the pages, with stitched leaves and embroidered stems, and are cross-referenced to a separate section featuring clear pattern instructions and information on yarn requirements. You will also find plenty of inspiration for embellishing your finished flowers with beads, buttons, sequins and embroidery. In addition, there are lots of ideas for using them in a range of fun ways, from unusual jewellery to decorating gift-wrapped packages. The patterns use UK crochet terms, with a US/UK conversion chart printed on the fold-out flap. Previously published as 9781844484034.Trade ReviewNature wins, especially in needlework popularity contests. In this fifteenth-anniversary edition, veteran needleworker Stanfield (The Knitter's Stitch Collection, 2021) recaps her take on translating flowers, fruits, and vegetables into yarn. Written in UK terminology (of note to crocheters), this collection first showcases finished items, then follows with technical instructions. Those directions include yarn specifications and methods, and, for crochet, instructions for how to make up (i.e. put together) and symbols, with further differentiation into beginning, intermediate, and advanced projects. Many of the pieces will be familiar (e.g. ladybug and acorn); others, less so (like Santolina and rudbeckia). A color portfolio of ten projects, without instructions, acts as a creative guide to using flowers and fruits for added design flourishes, on an evening handbag or winter scarf, for two examples. A standard for libraries that don’t already own this classic reference. -- Barbara Jacobs * Booklist *This is a really useful book for knitters and crocheters alike who would like to embellish their knitting or crocheting or have small projects to make. The pictures inspire one to try something new. The patterns are very clear and I like the fact that yarn weights are given rather than affiliating projects to a particular brand. The fold out flap with abbreviations is brilliant as a less experienced knitter or crocheter will not have to flip backwards and forwards to find out new terminology. This would be a great book to keep in your collection. -- Monica Russel * Monica Russel *Table of ContentsForeword/About this book 6 Before you begin 8 Materials and equipment 10, Crochet symbols 12, Abbreviations 14, Terminology and aftercare 15, Notes on knitting 16, Notes on crochet 18 Directory of flowers 20 Flowers 22, Leaves 42, Fruit and vegetables 44 Technical instructions 46 Knitting instructions, Basic designs 48, Intermediate designs 54, Advanced designs 62 Crochet instructions Basic designs 66, Intermediate designs 74, Advanced designs 92 Projects 108 Project 1 : Peg bag 110, Project 2: Evening handbag 112, Project 3: Stationery 114, Project 4: Christmas gift wrap 115, Project 5: Baby's cardigan 116, Project 6: Winter scarf 118, Project 7: Summer shoes 119, Project 8: Ruffles 120, Project 9: Place settings 122, Project 10: Shopping bag 124 Index 126 Resources and credits 128

Book SynopsisTaking inspiration from the Scandinavian, Nordic and Celtic regions, this book contains 20 charming and modern projects, based on traditional knitting styles and techniques. Exploring the iconic colourwork of Fair Isle or Scandinavia, or the chunky cables of Aran knitting, the intricacies of Shetland lace knitting or the cosiness of a Guernsey style pillowcase, these are knitwear items that are made to last. Jenny shares the inspiration and history behind each thoughtful project, as well as easy-to-follow patterns, colourwork charts, and atmospheric photography. She uses a serene and calming colour palette which, combined with beautiful soft yarns and stylish designs, makes for a collection of highly desirable items including garments and home accessories. Whether you’re a relative beginner or already an experienced knitter, with her guidance, you’ll soon be creating truly special and one-of-a-kind pieces that can be cherished for generations.Trade ReviewJenny Fennell is a designer based in Nova Scotia, Canada, and her work is inspired by the knitting traditions of countries including the Scottish Isles, Ireland and Scandinavia. For this book, she has designed 20 garment, accessory and homeware projects which showcase many beautiful styles and stitches from across the Northern Hemisphere. The collection includes a number of simple projects which will be ideal for novice knitters or as quick-knit gifts. These include a ribbed scarf, hat and mitts in a super-chunky yarn, and the little ‘Lace of Unst’ bookmark, which is a sweet introduction to Shetland lace knitting. For the home, there is a beautiful blanket with a lace pattern of birch leaves, and a large, intricately cabled blanket inspired by Aran sweaters. ‘Skies of Sweden’ is a colourwork cushion in heathered pink and cream, whose patterning evokes a pine forest in winter. The ‘Dream in Danish Throw Cushion’ features knit-and-purl textures influenced by Danish traditions. Our favourite projects in the book are the colourwork accessories, such as the pretty Fair Isle wristwarmers called ‘A Slow Day in Shetland’, and the chic twisted headband which has blue and white motifs depicting Finland’s national flower, the lily of the valley. There’s a cosy honeycomb cable shawl, a neat hat and scarf with delicate floral colourwork inspired by Scandinavian textiles, and a pair of classic Nordic mittens featuring the Selbu rose motif. The White Heather Shawl’ combines a pretty lace and bobble stitch pattern with a chunky yarn. Knitters can try working with Icelandic lopi wool with the ‘Fire and Ice’ cowl and mittens, which have a simple, geometric colourwork pattern to depict the volcanic landscapes of Iceland. There is one garment project in the book: a chunky Aran-style cabled sweater, which has been designed with minimal shaping and basic seaming to make it a great choice for your first Aran jumper project. It’s sized to fit chests of approximately 36in to 62in. Jenny provides illustrated walkthroughs for many of the techniques used in the patterns, such as mattress stitch, twist seaming, and cabling techniques. -- The Knitter * The Knitter *Taking inspiration from the Nordic, Scandinavian and Celtic regions, this books contains 20 modern projects, based on traditional knitting styles and techniques. These 20 fresh, colourful, new designs will inspire you to get creative with your stash. * Machine Knitting Monthly, July 2023 *I really can’t fault this fabulous, colourful book. I have crocheted for many years and now mainly make crochet blankets so was looking forward to some new granny square patterns to try and I haven’t been disappointed. Each granny square pattern is easy to follow and well explained. What I really like is you are shown each square made in several different colour ways to inspire you, it’s amazing how different they can look. Also included in the book are a few projects to make using the squares. All in all, a great book to have! -- Diane Williams * Customer Review *Was surprised that this is hardback which is great as it makes it easy to use. The instructions are clearly written and great if both learning to crochet or can crochet. Pictures are in colour and good quality which makes the colour changes easier to see. Some nice patterns for inspiration, particularly if you don’t want to keep making blankets. Who knew there were so many different granny squares. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisAll the bears in the book are based on the same, simple knitted bear, instructions for which are provided at the beginning of the book and are easy enough for even novice knitters to follow. There are 20 unique designs, including a hiking bear complete with boots and a backpack, a beach-loving bikini bear, a sweet honey bee bear, and a pretty pink ballet dancer, each with its own knitted outfit and accessories. Every bear has its own special character, and the reader is bound to find at least one they just have to knit. Suitable for adults as well as children, they make ideal gifts, and of course there is nothing to stop the reader creating characters of their own that they can personalise to suit a particular person or occasion.Trade ReviewMar 10 From pram to playgroup, to PhD and parenthood, people have their teddy bears with them – and teddies make great gifts, too. Val Pierce has created a fab collection of 20 knitted bears in beautiful costumes which are perfect for all sorts of occasions. There's a bride and groom, a college-bound bear and a baby bear, and lots of other quirky costumes besides. There's a pumpkin bear for Halloween and a strawberry bear for summer, and bears which are celebrating hobbies like football and (of course) knitting. Clothes and bear bodies are knitted separately, so although the bears are not designed to be underssed, you can adapt the patterns provided to create a wardrobe of costumes for your teddy. * Simply Knitting *Mar 10 We couldn't resist this one to show hand knitters how to knit 20 little bears and then dress them up in a wonderful range of colourful outfits that will delight both adults and children. All the designs are based on the same simple knitted bear and instructions are provided. They're easy to follow for even novice knitters. Every bear has its own special character and you're sure to find at least one you just have to knit. The bears are suitable for adults as well as children. They make ideal gifts and there's nothing to stop you creating charactes of your own. * Machine Knitting Monthly *Mar 10 Bear fans rejoice! With this little book you'll learn how to create a simple bear to then dress up in a range of charming and comical outfits, handknitted by you. Each bear measures 20cm or 8 inches high and is easy enough even for novice knitters to complete. The outfits are what really give the bears their character, and our favourites are Hector Hiking Bear, complete with boots and a rucksack, and Grace Bride Bear, dressed up in a white gown. These bears make great gifts for adults and children, and the book will make a lovely gift for someone who wants to try knitting bears for the first time. * Knit Today *Mar 10 Here is another book that shows you what to do with all that leftover double knitting wool you have in your bag. You will probably need to buy a ball or two for the bears, although at 8" high the leftover yarn might do for this as well. There is a basic pattern for a bear at the start of this book, together with basic patterns for trousers, dress and shoes. But there are also twenty different ways to make up your bear in a different style, together with instructions on how to turn it into a panda and lots of other colored bears. My favorite aspect of this (apart from the opportunities for fund raising and recycling) has to be the imagination involved in dreaming up the different looks. There is a Christmas bear, baby bear, bride and groom, panda and girl teddy in a pretty dress or two, but then there is also a bear in Hallowe’en garb (dressed as a pumpkin), fancy dress, teddy as a strawberry, a bee and a ladybird as well as a footballer, ballerina, along with various male attires. This is more a book for the intermediate knitter, as there is a certain amount of knitting know-how needed to make the bears look their best. Not all the bears seem to have exactly the same proportions, so some tweaks to the basic pattern are sometimes necessary. This will give you the experience to create yet more bears; one for everybody you know! * Myshelf.com *Table of ContentsIntroduction Basic patterns Katy Strawberry Bear Bouncing Baby Bear Peter Pumpkin Bear Freddy Football Bear Toby Toddler Bear Billy Bridegroom Bear Grace Bride Bear Pippa Dolly Bear Holly Christmas Bear Dainty Dancing Bear Barney College Bear Sweet Honey Bee Bear Olivia Sweetheart Bear Emily Knitting Bear Sophie Bikini Bear Poppy Panda Bear Hector Hiking Bear Lucky Ladybird Bear Pretty Party Bear Belinda Bouquet Bear

Search Press Ltd Tunisian Crochet Stitch Dictionary: 150 Essential

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisTunisian crochet has experienced a great revival in recent years – a surge in popularity that is showing no signs of slowing down. Anna Nikipirowicz outlines a wide variety of new and unique stitches in this beautifully produced reference work. This Tunisian crochet stitch collection offers classic and new stitches, designed to keep needlecrafters of all skill levels occupied for years to come. Tunisian crochet produces a fabric that is similar to a knit but worked on a hook. It’s a lot quicker, combining the best of knitting and crochet, creating a dense, durable fabric. Packed with 150 stitches for beginner and intermediate to advanced, you can start with basic stitches which are organized into themed sections. With actual-size swatches, you can see straight away if you are getting it right. It also includes charts and step-by-step photo instructions. The Tunisian Crochet Stitch Dictionary is designed to get crochet fans discovering new stitches and creative ways of working crochet.Trade ReviewThe book is packed with a directory of 150 stitches (which are all so well explained), as well as a really useful section on Tunisian crochet skills. Each stitch has really detailed, step-by-step instructions, actual-size swatch pictures and charts. I’m not particularly au fait with charts (my brain does not work that way naturally), but thanks to the symbols and abbreviations list in the skills section, I was able to follow the charts easily too. If I’m honest, my Tunisian crochet skills are very limited. Of course, I have released a Tunisian crochet shawl pattern, but this uses only Tunisian Simple Stitch. My knowledge of other stitches is definitely lacking! As soon as I flicked through the stitch directory, I was making lists of stitches I wanted to try and getting ideas for future designs. I decided to work up a couple of swatches to try out some new stitches, and honestly, I had so much fun. To be fair, since I have a one-year-old to take care of every day, my yarn time these days is very precious, but this truly was like a breath of fresh air. I'm really looking forward to using some of these stitches (and more) in future designs. The stitches I tried were Rib Stitch (variegated yarn), Lace Shell II (purple yarn) and Diamond Lace (grey yarn). The Rib Stitch is pretty simple but super effective, and I love how it worked up in this gorgeous variegated yarn - the yarn made a relatively simple stitch really shine. The Lace Shell II blew my mind. I had no idea Tunisian crochet could look like that! I actually think I over-stretched my swatch a little when I blocked it, but the shells are so pretty and delicate. I can imagine this stitch would be fabulous for a summery shawl or wrap. The Diamond Lace was my first try at lace in Tunisian crochet, and now I want to try all the lace stitches! This would be so striking as a panel on a garment or even a shawl. Next up on my list to try are Tunisian crochet cables! […] This book fits that bill perfectly! You should definitely get your hands on it if you're able to. -- Mary-Lynn Dalrymple * Wholly Hooked *Tunisian crochet produces a fabric that is similar to a knit but is worked on a hook. It combines the best of knitting and crochet, creating a dense, durable fabric. Tunisian Crochet Stitch Dictionary is a must-have crochet book that’s an essential resource for anyone in the crochet and knitting community! Featuring 150 of the most popular and most used Tunisian crochet stitches, this reference book is filled with step-by-step instructions and coordinating photographs to help you achieve stitch after stitch, from beginner to intermediate to advanced. From basic stitches, fans, shells, and cables to lace, waves, chevron, and cross stitches, plus embellishments, edgings, and more, a detailed section on essential crochet skills, techniques, and other fundamentals are also included. Additionally, actual-size swatches so you can easily see if you’re getting it right and helpful charts are featured, as well as consistent yarn weight being used throughout for easy stitch comparison. Author Anna Nikipirowicz is a skilled crochet and knit designer, tutor, and author of several crochet books. Her work is regularly featured in Inside Crochet and other craft magazines, and she is also a regular on Yarn Lane TV where she shares her designs and techniques. She teaches Tunisian crochet, crochet, and knitting throughout the UK and abroad, always striving for participants to learn new skills or enhance the ones they already have. A collection of both classic and new Tunisian crochet stitches, Tunisian Crochet Stitch Dictionary will keep needlecrafters of all skill levels occupied and inspired for years to come. * CrochetEnvy.com *Tunisian crochet is enjoying a surge in popularity and this book is packed with 150 stitches for all levels of expertise. With actual-size swatches, charts and step-by-step photos, it's designed for crochet fans to discover new stitched and creative methods. * Machine Knitting Monthly, May 2023 *Whether you're just starting to experiment with Tunisian crochet or experienced with this technique, this stitch directory is a brilliant reference to keep handy while you work. Featuring 150 classic and new stitches, crochet teacher Anna shows how to work each stitch, including step-by-step photos and charts. Arranged by theme, the book enables you to start with beginner stitches and then progress, while actual size swatches enable you to check you're getting it right. * Inside Crochet, Issue 157 *This book is a joy. I have long wanted to get my teeth into Tunisian crochet and this book has shown me how. There are clear written instructions alongside beautiful, helpful photographs and charts to enable me to tackle a huge array of stitches. There are also clear instructions on how to begin one's Tunisian crochet journey, explaining in simple terms how to begin with the basics. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in crochet. -- Susan chesworth * Customer Review *I am very new to the art of Tunisian crochet and had no idea there were so many different stitches. This lovely book contains 150 from the more well known stitches to some very exciting and unusual ones. It will definitely appeal to those more experienced in Tunisian crochet but will inspire newbies, like me, to continue learning and trying them out. I like the layout of the book, especially the photos of all the stitched swatches at the beginning so you can easily find what you need. Each stitch has its own entry with written instructions and chart, plus a real life sized photo of how the stitch should look. There is a good basic skills section at the back which has a clear, large font list of the symbols and abbreviations used in the patterns so it is very easy to use. -- Lesley Cowland * Customer Review *I loved the easy-on-the-eye colour palettes and was further lured in by the pictures of interesting swatches in this book. I could recognise many of the stitches but was indeed inspired by the combinations and colourways. I am happy to report that this book is a thorough and fulsome dictionary of Tunisian stitches, laid out with a concise, clear system that deploys verbal, diagrammatic and photographic instructions helpful to all comers, from newbies to masters. It's got all the usual info about yarns, hooks and other notions associated with the craft, tables of chart symbols and abbreviations, and a full index in the back. I particularly appreciate the illustrated contents that allows a quick visual search. All the basic stitches are there, including variations. The author covers all the categories from lace, cables, colour work, popcorns and honeycombs to pineapple stitches and varieties of chevrons and waves. It even includes some lovely ideas on embellishments such as weaving, embroidery and surface crochet. There is even a collection of borders and edges – a category not always acknowledged within Tunisian crochet. I was thoroughly inspired and spent quite a few happy hours trying out the swatches and jotting down the multiple ideas that bubbled up as a result. I definitely recommend it. -- Lindy Zubiary * SlipKnot, September 2023 *Table of ContentsIntroduction About this book DIRECTORY OF STITCHES Fans and Shells Bobbles and Clusters Cables Relief Stitches Lace Stitches Waves and Chevrons Embellishments Edgings TUNISIAN CROCHET SKILLS Yarn Equipment Getting started Special stitches and techniques Symbols and abbreviations Index Credit

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisDiscover all the essential skills one stitch at a time. With clear step-by-step tutorials and charts you'll find the stitches quick and easy to learn. The blocks are organised according to skill level, progressing from basic knit and purl stitches to more challenging techniques such as cable and lace. Practice one new stitch at a time before you’re ready to move on to the next one. At the back of the book, you’ll find a handful of inspirational projects that teach you how to combine your blocks for unique and stylish results.Trade ReviewFantastic! I am only a beginner when it comes to knitting. There is so much to learn it seems daunting. This book breaks it down so you can easily and quickly progress. If you are new to knitting or just want to expand your skills then this book is brilliant. It first teaches you how to read charts, you'll need to do this as all the patterns are in chart format.Che guides you through tools and materials, tension, holding the yarn and needles, casting on and off and finishing. Everything you learn is designed to create an amazing afghan but you are also given different projects that the squares can be used for. The book contains 50 knit blocks to teach you 50 stitches and techniques. You'll be amazed by how much is covered. Your knitting will be expanded in such a way you don't notice how quickly you are learning so much. I must admit I sometimes get bored knitting but as you are only knitting a block at a time it seems to go a whole lot faster. With each new stitch or technique you are given step by step instructions to help you learn. You are also given large and clear pictures to show you what you should be doing. You really will be amazed how quickly you progress. I also love the fact that I can create as many or as few blocks as I want. I have set myself a goal of hopefully knitting at least two blocks a week. This book has really excited me and got me back on track with learning new knitting skills. I would highly recommend this book! * Crochet Addict UK *As a judge for this book then I speak from this fairly basic level of ability for the craft overall. Firstly, I will always struggle to replicate techniques represented in a photograph or illustration into a 3D reality, so if you're like me, and you're all fingers and thumbs at the best of times you may have the same trouble. So I report that I found I had to try, try, and try again to follow the correct hand placing and the correct placing of the yarn as shown in the pictures to make something as straightforward as a slip knot. The high quality of presentation of this book however, allows easy following of the stitch charts just fine and the instructions and the layout of this book is very clear. I have only moved through two or three of the block projects to trial the effectiveness of the writing and information. I intend to make many blocks so that I become conversant in many different knitting patterns and knitting techniques, so that I can go on to make bigger and better things. I think this book is probably one of the best you can get to help progress with your knitting skills and it will always be a useful point of reference to have at hand. * Debra Hall -TSS Reviews *April 2016 Discover all the essential skills one stitch at a time and build up your hand knitting skills one block at a time. With clear step-by-step tutorials and charts, the stitches are quick and easy to learn. Inspiring projects show how to join blocks for unique and stylish results. * Machine Knitting Monthly *Step by step tutorials and charts help to build your knitting skills one block at a time. The 50 blocks are arranged according to skill level from basic stitches to challenging techniques. This is a fun way to learn to knit and gain confidence in your ability. There’s also a range of projects to test your new-found skills. The book covers basic, textured, twisted, cable, lace and relief stitches. The projects to make are coasters, cosmetics bag, poncho, cushion cover and wall decoration. There is also a knitting techniques section covering what you need to know from casting on to finishing. A great beginner’s knitting course that will give you confidence from the word go. * Karen Platt- yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *The idea is a simple one. There are 50 blocks, or squares in this book. They are arranged according to skill level and, by working on each one you'll learn a new skill and out that skill into practice. The first blocks are for beginners and cover how to knit and how to purl; the later blocks teach how to knit cables, lace, and using different colours. Instructions are clear and jargon free and accompanies by helpful diagrams and photos. And once you've knitted your blocks, Che Lam has a whole host of ideas for what you might want to do with them! * Knitting & Crochet *Table of ContentsAbout This Book 8 How to Read a Chart 9 Tools and Materials 10 Knitting Tension 14 Holding the Yarn and Needles 15 Casting On 16 Casting Off 19 Finishing 21 SECTION 1: KNITTED SQUARES 24 BASICS Knit Stitch 26, Purl Stitch 28, Decrease 2 Stitches 30, Increase 2 Stitches 32, Decrease 1 Stitch 34 TEXTURED Double Rib 36, Double Moss 38, Drop Stitch 40, Slip Stitch Rib 42, Waffle Stitch 44, Eyelet Rib 46, Zigzag Stitch 48, Moss Heart 50, Mini Bobbles 52 TWISTED Woven Panel 54, Twisted Rib 56, Slanting Trellis 58, Twisted Zigzag 60, Diamond Lattice 62 CABLE Cable 4 Front 64, Cable 4 Back 66, 8-Stitch Plait 68, Medallion Cable 70, Lantern Cable 72, Fishtail Cable 74, Braided Cable 76, Diamond Cable 78, Arrow Cable 80, Cross Cable 82, Slip Stitch Cable 84, Rib Cable 86 LACE Diamond Lace 88, Diagonal Lace 90, Openwork Lace 92, Lace Pane 94, Lace Bud 96, Lace Ridge 98, Lattice Lace 100, Eyelet Lace 102, Large Eyelet 104, Lace Leaf 106, Lace Check 108, Lace Heart 110 RELIEF Houndstooth 112, Arrow Stitch 114, Linen Stitch 116, Embroidery Stitch 118, l-cord 120, Intarsia 122, Fair Isle 124 SECTION 2: PERSONALISE IT! 126 Set of Coasters 128, Cosmetics Bag 130, Lace Poncho 132, Cushion Cover 135, Wall Decoration 138 Beyond the Block 140 Abbreviations 141 Index 142 Credits 144

  • The Very Easy Guide to Fair Isle Knitting:

Search Press Ltd The Very Easy Guide to Fair Isle Knitting:

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisFair Isle knitting may look complicated, but it really is easy to do once you understand the basics. Author Lynne Watterson starts beginners off with the basics of two-color knitting: reading a Fair Isle chart; what to do with all the fiddly yarn ends, and getting to grips with circular needles. The main chapters feature a selection of beautiful stitch patterns. Each pattern has clear instructions in both written and chart form, and these are cross-referenced to a comprehensive guide to abbreviations. Each of the main chapters includes simple, stylish projects demonstrating ways to use the beautifully shaded Fair Isle patterns—from chic accessories and the latest fashion looks to contemporary cushion covers and throws.Trade ReviewJan 13 This is the second in the Very Easy Guides. The introduction includes all about yarn, colour and materials to get you started. The knitting basics section is illustrated with excellent line drawings showing basic techniques and stitches. The stitch guide takes up the majority of the pages. There is a two page colour overview of all the stitch patterns included. Each stitch is described and illustrated in colour, there is also a small chart showing the pattern for those who prefer to work from charts. The book is set out as lessons, 28 of them in all. The final lessons are on beading, finishing and more. There are projects to use your new found skills every step of the way. I particularly liked the fingerless gloves and the beret. I really liked this book, but didn't feel it stretched the subject and that a lot of the patterns were too basic. However, it is aimed at the beginner, so I think it hits the target well. It has a good, constructive approach. * Karen Platt Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts *Issue 55 If you've yet to try your hand at stranded colourwork, or if you'd just like a decent stitch guide to classic Fair Isle motifs to help with your own designing, this book is a great buy. Lynne Watterson covers all the basics in a series of lessons, from holding the yarns, stranding and weaving, to the importance of tension and how to read charts. A range of 11 simple patterns helps you to practise each technique. * Knitter, The *Issue 25 Let Fair Isle expert Lynne Watterson help you master the basics of this technique with her new book. Learn how to read patterns, use circular needles and – most importantly – what to do with all those fiddly yarn ends. We can't wait to get started on tons of vintage-style looks. * Mollie Makes Magazine *Issue 60 This is an essential guide for those who may be a little apprehensive about Fair Isle as Lynne Watterson provides easy step-by-step instructions and stitch patterns to build your confidence. The book is divided into ‘lessons’, from knowing your knitting kit, yarns and knitting basics to the ever important colour choices when knitting Fair Isle: increasing, circular knitting, adding beads and weaving. A wide range of stitch patterns are featured, including corrugated ribbing, seeding (which produces beautiful heart shapes), Fair Isle bands and the Fair Isle patterns themselves. The book also showcases 11 easy-to-follow projects so you can test your newly-acquired skills. The patterns have nice clear charts for easy reading and the book is must-have for the next step in knitting. * Yarnwise *June 13 Former editor of MK news, Lynne has put together a clear step-by-step guide to hand knitting Fair Isle. She includes masses of useful charts and colourways to inspire every machine knitter. Whilst ideal for electronic machines, many of the charts can be transferred or adapted slightly for punchcard knitting. * Machine Knitting Monthly *Sept 13 If you admire the intricacy and timelessness of Fair Isle knitting but think it looks too complicated, this book might just be what you need. It promises to be very easy, with step-by-step instructions, easy projects and all the information you require to get started. But is this all true? I was impressed by the user-friendly layout of this book. It even starts out by showing you how to use it for the best results, and is divided helpfully into three sections. These are the basics of knitting, the patterns and finishing techniques. Each section is divided into a number of lessons, twenty-eight in total taking you from things like understanding yarns and ball bands and having the right kit to aftercare. In between you can actually learn to knit—from casting on to the basic stitches you need to learn in order to do this style. If you are a quick learner you might be able to truly get all you need to know to make the projects, but most people would probably be better off learning the nuts and bolts of knitting elsewhere and getting a few plain projects under their belts first. There are some very clear diagrams in here, some of the best I have seen, and a particularly informative and simple guide to working out tension. The patterns themselves come with a handy guide to what they all look like on two pages, and each pattern is easy to follow and starts from the simplest, getting harder throughout the book. The projects come after a set of related patterns and give you a chance to practice what you have just learned while making something attractive and useful. A child’s cardigan, hat and scarf set, bag, throw, mug hugs and my favorite the hot water bottle cover are some examples. Finally you can learn how to block, press and look after your new items as well as add beads and buttons or make simple trims like pompoms and tassels. I don’t think I have seen many knitting books that explain what you actually need to know better than this one, very highly recommended. * Myshelf.com *Nov 13 Fair Isle Knitting, or knitting with two colours at once, is generally considered to be a more advanced knitting technique. It is seen to be tricky because of learning the coordination of controlling both yarns at once, weaving in long floats, and the artistic use of colour and pattern. But, like many things, it’s easy once you know how. Unfortunately, this book does not have the magic to teach a newish knitter how to do Fair Isle. It starts at a basic level discussing yarns, how to cast on, tension swatches, etc. There are only four pages, showing how to hold the yarns for stranding, and weaving, specifically for Fair Isle. The majority of the book contains stitch guides with patterns for traditional and non-traditional two colour patterns. Most are quite simple, with a few more complex ones using three colours over the pattern. Also included are some simple, quick to make, projects for accessories and children’s clothing. Unfortunately, these are mainly knitted in the flat. Personally, I find purling in two colours more fiddly than knitting, and this difficulty is not covered in the book. Assuming that you have knitted in the round before, Fair Isle can be much easier as a knit stitch. If you are a new knitter who wants to learn Fair Isle, I would recommend learning by watching someone (in a class or video). I don’t think this book gives you enough help to master the coordination and technique. * Journal for Weavers, Spinners & Dyers *Table of ContentsForeword 8 About this book 9 Lesson 1: Yarns 10 Lesson 2: Choosing colors 12 Lesson 3: Knitting kit 14 Knitting basics 16 Lesson 4: Casting on 18 Lesson 5: Knit and purl 20 Lesson 6: Reversible fabrics 22 Lesson 7: Binding off 23 Lesson 8: Increasing 24 Lesson 9: Decreasing 25 Lesson 10: Gauge 26 Lesson 11: Circular knitting 28 Lesson 12: Holding the yarns 30 Lesson 13: Stranding 31 Lesson 14: Weaving 32 Lesson 15: Charts 34 Fair Isle patterns 36 Stitch guide 38 Lesson 16: Corrugated ribbing 40 Lesson 17: Seeding 44 - Project 1: Child’s cardigan 52, Project 2: Child’s hoodie 54 Lesson 18: Fair Isle bands 56 - Project 3: Fingerless mitts 80, Project 4: Hot water bottle cover 82, Project 5: Beret 84, Project 6: Legwarmers 86, Project 7: Hat and scarf 88 Lesson 19: Fair Isle patterns 90 - Project 8: Mug cozies and pot holders 116, Project 9: Bag 118, Project 10: Throw 120, Project 11: Cushions 124 Finishing Techniques 126 Lesson 20: Blocking and pressing 128 Lesson 21: Perfect seams 130 Lesson 22: Adding beads 132 Lesson 23: Tassels 134 Lesson 24: Pompoms 135 Lesson 25: Twisted cord 136 Lesson 26: Fringing 137 Lesson 27: Adding buttons 138 Lesson 28: Aftercare essentials 140 Abbreviations 141 Index 142 Credits 144

  • Arne & Carlos Knitting Scandinavian Style: Socks,

Search Press Ltd Arne & Carlos Knitting Scandinavian Style: Socks,

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisArne & Carlos derived the inspiration for this book from numerous Setesdal patterns. Many were found in the attics of old houses, in books, on postcards, and from old knitting patterns. In their newest book, Knitting Scandinavian Style, you will find 33 patterns for gorgeous sweaters in bright colours, to suit both men and women. Ideas for accessories such as mittens, hats, wrist warmers, stockings, small and large pillows, teddy bears and much more. The levels of difficulty vary from completely easy patterns to those for more experienced knitters. Through experience gained from working alongside Scandinavia's most respected knitters, many of whom still use centuries-old techniques, Arne & Carlos seek to preserve tradition while creating pieces that are fresh and modern. The 33 patterns in this book have been inspired by Setesdal’s cultural heritage but were designed with a little twist.Trade ReviewSeptember 2014 With all things Scandinavian more popular than ever, here is a whole book dedicated to knitting projects in this style. Popular knitwear designers Arne and Carlos have filled this handsome book with lovely pieces taken from traditional motifs from Setesdal in Southern Norway. As with all the Arne and Carlos series you can expect a beautifully illustrated book with pictures of more than just the projects. The inspiration behind this collection is Arne’s grandmother who came from this area, and her house that was filled with items to inspire designs. There are lots of pictures of traditional items like Christmas cards and knitting patterns as well as the authors and others wearing the clothes and interesting snippets about Setesdal motifs. This is the home of what we think of as the classic Scandinavian sweater, and there are patterns for several in here along with socks, hats, mittens, blankets, pillows, a tea cozy and more. Patterns include written instructions and charts, many in color along with large full page photographs and notes about the inspiration behind the design. The yarns used are all as Scandinavian as the projects and there is a short but handy list of UK and US stockists and substitutes along with websites. This is a book aimed at intermediate and upwards knitters with no information about actual knitting, just the patterns but at this level this should be enough. Something for less proficient knitters to aspire to and a lovely book in all respects. If you cannot find a good range of knitting materials locally try http://www.searchpress.com for a list of suppliers. * Myshelf.com *Christmas 2014 New from knitting's favourite double-act is this beautiful collection of Scandinavian inspired clothes, accessories and homewares. Arne & Carlos took inspiration from the colourwork patterns from books, postcards and old knitting patterns found stashed away in dusty attics in the Setesdal Valley of southern Norway, and conjured up 33 stunning all-ability designs for men, women and children - including hats, teddy bears, wristwarmers and cushions. * Knit Today *Issue 77 There's something irresistible about Nordic knitwear designs when the weather starts to turn chilly - and just in time for winter, Scandinavian design duo Arne and Carlos have released this colourful collection of garments and accessories. Design influences have been drawn from their collection of vintage Norwegian patterns, textiles, books and even Christmas card, discovered in the attic of Arne's grandmother in Setesdal. We especially love the elegance of the two-tone stranded colourwork jumpers for men and women, and the exuberant colours of the cosy stockings taken from vintage Setesdal sweaters. You can bring Scandi-style into your home, too, with Arne and Carlos's colourwork pillows, draft excluders and tea cosy. Quick knits include 'Five Wise Virgins' wristwarmers and hats, a sweet little teddy bear, and mittens inspired by traditional Norwegian weaving. There's also a beautiful heirloom lace baby blanket. * Knitter, The *This book is inspirational for a fair isle knitter who is looking for ideas for a new project. The complexity of patterns varies from a simple first colour work potholder project, to a complex jumper pattern that involves the advanced technique of steeking. I believe that there is something there for everyone. I like the fact that there are also lace projects which are not too complex and the neck warmer would be a great simple piece of knitting for a weekend. The colour ranges shown are excellent and give the reader great ideas of how colours can be mixed and also how photography can enhance the piece with carefully chosen backgrounds. The photos are great and they also bring in humour and a sense of history. The patterns are laid out clearly and charts are a great size to follow. I believe that the patterns within them can be transferred to other projects, if you wanted to use them more than once. -- Monica Russel * theknitknacks.co.uk *

The 'Shanghai' socks are inspired by the gold dragon scales and flowing lace of China; delicate pale-pink cherry blossom motifs bedeck the 'Hanami' (flower viewing) socks that bring to mind springtime in Japan; while the flowing leaves of the tropical rainforests and the exotic creatures prescribe the vivid colourways of the 'Madagascar'-inspired pair. Laitinen has designed the patterns to be easy to knit in her trademark familiar style using double-pointed needles, or cable needles for the cabled details, and a creative use of colour. The instructions are clear, there are intricate, detailed pattern charts for each pair of socks, and the photos are rich, atmospheric and wonderfully evocative. Book Synopsis'A compelling literary journey through the social history of wool in the British Isles' Karen Lloyd, author of The Gathering Tide Travel the length of the British Isles with Esther Rutter, as she tells the story of wool's long and tangled history here Esther Rutter grew up on a sheep farm in Suffolk, and learned to spin, weave and knit as a child. Here she unearths fascinating histories of communities whose lives were shaped by wool, from the mill workers of the Border countries, to the English market towns built on profits of the wool trade, and the Highland communities cleared for sheep farming; and finds tradition and innovation intermingling in today's knitwear industries. Along the way, she explores wool's rich culture by knitting and crafting culturally significant garments from our history - whether gloves, a scarf, a baby blanket, socks or a fisherman's jumper - reminding us of the value of craft and our intimate relationship with wool. This Golden Fleece is at once a celebration on the craft and history of knitting, and a fascinating exploration of wool's influence on our landscape, history and culture. 'You don't have to be a knitter to enjoy this wondrous book, although as one, I did smile through most of its pages' BBC Countryfile 'The history of plain, purl and intarsia is woven together by Esther Rutter, whose own skill with needles, learned from practical experience, attests that this ancient craft is nothing less than a wonder of civilization. Beautifully written too' Janice Galloway, author of This Is Not About MeTrade ReviewA compelling literary journey through the social history of wool in the British Isles -- Karen Lloyd, author of * The Gathering Tide *This is a book about wool and sheep, the making of Scotland, England and farming, textile manufacture, folk-lore and, crucially, the essential craft of knitting. The plying of wool had been a vital survival skill for over two millennia in Britain before the Romans showed up (bringing their own sheep with them, just in case) making this domestic skill a founding piece of 'civilisation'. From fairy tales to debate regarding national identity, from the year dot to the tragedy of the Scottish Clearances and beyond, the history of plain, purl and intarsia is woven together by Esther Rutter, whose own skill with needles, learned from practical experience, attests that this ancient craft is nothing less than a wonder of civilization. Beautifully written too -- Janice Galloway, author of * This Is Not About Me *I love the sound of this * Bookseller *Esther Rutter unravels the social history and allure of knitting, from Fair Isle to Cornwall via the Hebrides [...] in her fascinating book * Stornoway Gazette *

Book Synopsis'This is a joy of a book. I know nothing of sweaters and little of Iceland, and this book used pictures and words to open Iceland and its people for me, using Icelandic sweaters and knitting to do it.' - Neil Gaiman In Iceland there’s a piece of knitwear that everybody has but no one has bought: the lopapeysa, or ‘lopi’ for short. This sweater made from unspun Icelandic wool is a treasured piece of the island’s culture passed down from generation to generation, used and cherished. By interviewing local experts, wool producers and knitters they trace the history of the patterns and along the way meet rock stars, professors and designers who share their knitting-related stories and reveal some of their country’s hidden gems. From isolated waterfalls, hot springs and iconic movie locations to beautiful Icelandic horses, giant glaciers and erupting volcanos, the book is full of stunning photographs at every turn. The journey inspired 12 beautiful lopi-style knitting patterns all presented here with photographs, charts and detailed instructions to carefully guide you through each project whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced knitter. • Mandalas to Crochet: 30 Great Patterns

Search Press Ltd Mandalas to Crochet: 30 Great Patterns

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisCrocheted mandalas are having a moment! And it is no wonder the mandala is in vogue: one evening is often enough to begin and finish something eye-catching. This book celebrates the sheer fun of making and showcases Haafner Linssen’s modern colour schemes and patterns. With full patterns and inspiring photos, a review of crochet techniques that helps you create a perfect circle, a discussion of materials, colours, finishing techniques, and lots of project ideas, this book is a guarantee for many hours of happy mandala-making.Trade ReviewThere are 30 mandala patterns to crochet in this book, all sorts of colours and all sorts of stitches. However what I particularly like about these mandalas is the fact they are all new and very modern to look at. nothing too lacy and the colours are for everyone, neither too bright or too pastel. These days I like to review a book by actually making something from it. I find it is easy to lose yourself in beautiful images, be inspired to get your hook out and all to often be disappointed by a pattern that is hard to follow or is not well written. Has that ever happened to you? Therefore I made two mandalas from this book, and I am pleased to announce the patterns are superb, easy to read, they flow nicely and there are charts too. I am just getting to grips with charts. I find if I do not understand a pattern instruction, a quick glance at a chart makes it all very obvious as to where I am to place my hook for the next stitch. The photographs are clear bright and enticing and best of all there are projects. My problem with mandalas is what to do with them after you have made them. This book has the answers. My next project from this book, will be a mandala that i will turn into a dream catcher, I have feathers and everything! If you are pondering buying this book (as I was) ponder no more...go get it. You will not be disappointed. Message to Haafner 'please can you write another crochet book asap please?' Full review including images of the finished projects: http://www.lazydaisyjones.com/2016/06/crochet-book-review-mandalas-to-crochet.html * Lazy Daisy Jones *I recently got my hands on this book Mandalas to Crochet by Haafner Linssen. Published by Search Press. I love crocheting mandalas, there’s just something very soothing and relaxing about doing these. Plus they are normally quick to make up, so you have a finished project in no time, which is a bonus as I always seem to have unfinished works in progress lying around, but then again doesn’t every crafter?! The author starts off by giving you information on yarns and selecting colours. Also she gives tips on crocheting the perfect mandala and by using certain techniques how you can achieve a more finished polished look to your work. If you are a beginner some of this information might go over your head for example, she uses standing stitches to begin rounds but you can still do them using the starting chain. I found this section very informative as she gives you information on starting rounds, joining a round, reading charts and how to do invisible joins, which I have always been lazy about doing but hey it does look better! She breaks the mandalas down into the following sections: Basic: which as the name suggests is a good place to start off if you are a beginner. The mandalas here are basic patterns just increasing and using different colours. A good place to start. Classic: these patterns are a little more challenging but still doable, more advanced stitches are used like popcorn and front post trebles. I crocheted the Lovely Lace Mandala & the Make it Pop Mandala from this section. Flowers: these patterns had a flower like theme and all so beautiful. I did the mandala “Oriental Lily” from this section and its my favourite from the book. Something Special: the last section of the book, again more beautiful mandalas with great colour combinations. All the mandalas in the book have a chart included too. The next section deals with borders and how you can finish off your work with a pretty border. She gives examples. The final section is all about projects and how you can incorporate the mandalas into projects. She lists the following: boho bag, hotpad, tablemat, summer scarf, lap blanket, rug and finally leaves and lace blanket, which is stunning. If you enjoy crocheting mandalas then this is the book for you, she gives 30 patterns which you crochet in no time and make them your own, simply by changing the colours or adding a different border. Full review including crocheted mandalas: https://themessybrunette.com/2016/06/15/book-review-mandalas-to-crochet-30-great-patterns-by-haafner-linssen/ * themessybrunette.com *A very well presented book, with clear sections and instructions. The patterns are all attractive and appealing, which I find unusual for a crochet book! The colourways are stylish and tasteful, but of course, you could use something more vibrant if you wanted. There are patterns included which create some unusual textures, so these could no doubt inspire you to take things further. This book is enough to encourage me to pick up a hook again. * Sue Gardener Buchanan *I was lucky enough to win a copy of this book and I am so glad that I did. Very well written with plenty for the novice right through to the advanced crocheter. Plenty of beautiful illustrations too which are really helpful * Emma Sweeny *this was perfect as it had a type of refresher type course which was perfect as it had been a few years since my last go so this was the most beneficial part. Great step by step instructions and how to do them in various colours annd yarns Any age this book is ideal for * Julie Henderson *Very happy with this book, I'm a beginner and I found it very easy to follow. Lots of designs to choose from. Would recommend to anyone who wants to learn * Victoria East *We all know about granny squares, but how about circular patterns? Mandalas need no introduction due to their popularity in other crafts, and now they are given the crochet treatment. Choose from thirty different patterns and seven projects and start your own mandala adventure. This book has a beautiful cover that reminds me of the mandala coloring books that are so popular currently. If you are at least an improver level crocheter, you can tackle these patterns, and the book includes a handy refresher course to remind you of the stitches (nice clear diagrams with good use of color). There are also helpful diagrams for things like fastening off, joining rounds and other things related to working in the round, as well as tips about choosing colors. There is a short section on how to make your work flat and neat, and a whole series of pages depicting each mandala so you can choose which you want to make. The patterns are grouped into basic, classic, flowers and something special, and all feature a chart and written instructions as well as the size hook you need (3mm features most often). The projects are well laid out and easy to read, albeit with quite small not very bold print. I think that the large photos make getting it right easier, and certainly make you want to get started. At the back you can find the projects, and see how the mandalas can be sized up or down to make a bag, scarf, mat, hot pad, two different blankets and a gorgeous bath mat, my own favorite. I always admire anybody who can take an idea like granny squares and stand it on its head, showing how versatile crochet truly is. A unique and user-friendly book. * Rachel Hyde - Myshelf.com *This book is a great for any who enjoys crochet. It is good for a beginner and a more advance hooker alike. The book begins with the basics of crochet, including stitches, yarn selection, colour selection, hook selection and even trouble shooting. By the time you have read this section you are fully armed to make great choices to ensure your project looks amazing. The book then goes on to show you various mandalas. It starts with basic patterns and works up to more advanced options. The pattern is given in chart form and in written. Meaning which ever way you prefer to crochet it is all there for you. The patterns are easy to follow and give clear consise instructions. More importantly the mandalas you can produce are simply stunning. The next part of the book contains projects for you to try. These include a bags and blankets. Once you have completed these you will be fully armed to make a variety of stunning projects out of your mandalas and you can take you creativity to the next level and try out your own projects. The book ends with a summary of all the symbols and abbreviations used in the book. Nothing is left to chance or assumed you know. It is all in the book for you. I heartily recommend this book for anyone interested in crochet. It is the best book in my library at the moment and I see it being extremely hard to replace. best purchase I have made. * Lisa Mayles *This is a lovely, well written crochet book. There are some really interesting tips in the "read this first" section for making joins and step ups invisible. Then there's a crochet refresher course with really clear diagrams of all the stitches together on a few pages which I love. Some books spread the different stitches all over the book and you're forever having to look them up in the index. Next there are 30 mandala patterns with written instructions and diagrams. I must admit I found the diagrams really scary when I first saw them but after reading the introduction they made sense. I was pleased to find some projects at the back of the book with a good selection of things to make with the mandalas. I've only recently learnt to crochet but I've made a start on my first mandala and it's going well so far. I'm looking forward to having a go at some of the more challenging patterns too. * Jane Turnball *Lovely book that crocheters of every level of ability, (even beginners due to the comprehensive guide to every stitch used at the start of the book) will be able to read and make beautiful mandalas. Wonderful use of colour and easy to follow written instructions and charts. Also, some fabulous ideas on how to use your mandalas to make lovely items such as a throw, bag, etc. * Emma Sweeney *This is a stunning well written book. It features 30 mandalas and 7 projects. There is a great begining section showing how to do the stitches, use of different threads and hooks with illustrations to show the finished project. The mandalas do not tell you what thread to use so I guess it lets you experiment. I tried the scallops of the sea and found it helpfull that there was both written and chart instructions as well as a photo of how it will turn out. A beginner can easily create a mandala and there is enough to challenge a more experienced crocheter. A delightful book to browse through. I will look forward to more from Haafner Linssen. * Alice Cowie *As a novice crocheter myself at first glance this looked a little daunting but after reading it through I decided to give my first mandala a go. The instructions are clear and easy to read, I did use YouTube videos as a visual aid to make sure I was doing it right to begin with. But it's so simple to pick up and I soon found myself confident in what I was doing. The colours of images are wonderfully vibrant and really inviting to look at. They draw you into the book. It's a sturdy book made from good quality paper that will definitely stand the test of time. With 128 pages to read, there will definitely be something that catches everyone's to try. I can't wait to get stuck in to my next mandala project. Thank you for making such an excellent book! * Jodi Darnley *April 2016 The mandala is in vogue right now and if you love the granny square then you'll adore this modern take on the crochet doily! Using modern colour schemes and eye catching patterns, each project will take you through the process of creating a perfect circle with large format charts full instructions and inspiration project ideas. Hook one up as a table mat, or go bigger and turn your mandala into a colourful cushion, some wall art for your home or even a stylish bag! You can easily make one in an evening or weekend and they're great stash-busters for yarn hoarders. There are 10 projects in this book, guaranteeing hours of happy mandala making * Love Crochet *This is a beautiful book showing how to create a variety of mandalas, from the delicate to more substantial items like a bathroom rug. With detailed instructions and beautiful photography, this book is an inspiration! * Hot Brands, Cool Places *Mandalas are making a huge revival at the moment. Haafner has taken this and brought mandalas to the present. The book starts with a before you begin section. This takes you through everything you need to know to make the mandalas. It sets you up and gets you ready. It takes you through everything from colour to yarns to use. You are supplied with a complete crochet refresher course. It shows you step by step each of the stitches used. Illustrations are supplied with the instructions which make it very easy to follow. The patterns are in written format and in chart format. Not only do you get patterns of mandalas you also get projects which you can also use them in. This book is really special. I love the mandalas and I love the projects ever more! * Crochet Addict UK *Mandalas – colourful circles to crochet. This book includes easy to make, quick to make mandalas. These designs can be completed in an evening. The book includes Before You Begin, Mandala Selector and Mandala Patterns. The latter are split into categories: Basic, Classic, Flowers, Special and Borders. You’ll find all the stitches you need, full instructions and charts for 30 mandalas. My favourites are Scallops and Confetti (neither are shown on the cover). Each design is clearly shown with good photos and clear instructions. Once you have mastered making mandalas, check out the seven projects for a beautiful bag, hotpads, table mats, scarf, blankets and rug. * Karen Platt- yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *The book is very detailed. It contains 30 great mandala patterns for you to crochet. There are three chapters in the book, beginning with the essential information you may need. Including a crochet refresher course with the stitches and techniques needed and a beautiful section on all the different yarns you can use. The book then moves onto different colour combinations and how you can create a colour plan. There are many mandala patterns to choose from so there is a section on called the mandala selector. The book then moves into the patterns. This is where the author has chosen her 30 favourite patterns for the readers to try. There are patterns ranging from simple to advanced using very technical stitches. The final chapter is mandala projects you can get stuck into. This is the most exciting part of the book in my opinion! There are all sorts of things you can make with the mandala patterns, from a boho bag to table mats, scarves and blankets. * rachelbustin.com *This book is beautifully presented with easily readable well-spaced print and UK terminology. Large clear photos and charts accompany all patterns. Each chart has a symbol key with it, so there is every encouragement to get into chart-reading if you are new to this. It begins with a brief refresher section on all the crochet stitches used, including 'magic ring'. Next, some unusual methods for starting and finishing rounds to make the join less visible. Also tips to avoid ruffling or cupping of your circular piece. The effect of colour choice is well illustrated by a picture of the same mandala done in 8 different colour schemes. There are 30 mandala patterns divided into basic and other categories. The first ones are in simple all over dc, htr or tr, but later more stitches such as basket-weave, popcorn, spiked and post stitches are featured. I tried "Make it Pop!" (p68) and was very pleased with the result. The book ends with 7 projects, including a mandala rug made with T-shirt yarn and a 10 mm hook! -- Sally Magill * Slipknot, The Knitting & Crochet Guild Magazine *Table of ContentsAbout this Book 6 Welcome to My World 8 Before You Begin 10 Yarns 12, Colour Me Happy 14, Read this First! 16, Crochet a Perfect Mandala 18, Crochet Refresher Course 20 Mandala Selector 26 Mandala Patterns 36 Basic Courtly Crown 38, Go with the Flow 40, Handsome Hoops 42, Granny Circle 44, Pebble in the Pond 46, Pretty Pieces 48 Classic Flirty Fifties 50, Rajasthan 52, Ice Cream 54, Starry, Starry Night 56, Lovely Lace 58, Marvellous Myriad 60, Bewitching Basketweave 64, Scallops of the Sea 66, Make it Pop! 68 Flowers Dainty Daisy 70, Tulips from Amsterdam 72, African Flower Love 74, Oriental Lily 76, Leaves and Lace 78, Strawberry Blossom 80, Say it with Flowers 82, Field of Wild Flowers 84 Something Special Love Me Loops 86, Layers and Loops 88, Confetti Time! 90 Enchanted April 92, Dazzling Days 94, Vintage Vibes 98, Delightful Doily 100 Borders 102 Projects 106 Boho Bag 108, Hotpad 110, Tablemat 112, Summer Scarf 114, Lap Blanket 116, Rug 118, Leaves and Lace Blanket 120 Symbols and Abbreviations 124 Index 126 Credits 128

So definitely the right time to be getting gifts and decorations made so you're not panicking at the last minute! I've been there and done that! In fact, one year, I gave Mr JK one sock and a half finished WIP which I then went on to finish knitting over the Christmas holidays! (And I discovered that she lives in Norfolk too!) The book is packed full of super-cute projects - there are 20 of them in total. Book SynopsisKnitwear designer Melissa Morgan-Oakes revolutionized the world of sock-making with 2-at-a-Time Socks. Her ingenious approach showed delighted knitters how to simultaneously create two socks on a single circular needle. With that book, yarn enthusiasts said goodbye forever to second sock syndrome, the frustration of completing one beautiful hand-knit sock, only to remember that another must be made. Now, Morgan-Oakes turns the approach on its head or rather, its toe with TOE-UP 2-AT-A-TIME SOCKS. Knitters adore toe-up socks for both novelty and practicality. Knitters can try on the sock as they work, they never run out of yarn before the foot is complete, and they avoid needing the dreaded kitchener stitch to finish off the toe. Many swear that toe-up socks just plain feel more comfortable, too.
