Search Press Ltd Colourwork in the Round: All the Techniques You
Book SynopsisAre you a keen knitter but have never tried colourwork (jacquard)? With the help of author Anna Dervout, you'll soon have colourwork spilling off your needles to create delicate yet modern knitwear designs for women and children. Colourwork refers to a technique used to knit patterns in multiple colours; it requires the simultaneous use of several different colours in the same row. An understanding of colourwork paves the way to integrating a vast range of knitting motifs: horizontal, vertical, geometric or stand-alone. In Colourwork in the Round, discover different colourwork techniques using circular needles, which are becoming increasingly popular among knitting enthusiasts due to their advantages over traditional double-pointed needles; they are more comfortable, portable and versatile to use. You’ll learn how to choose your yarns, manage tension, knit in the round, and integrate a seamless change of colour into your work. Colourwork in the Round does the hard work of demystifying this traditional knitting technique through clear, illustrated step-by-step instructions that guide you through the learning process, and a detailed chapter on how to read a colourwork pattern chart. Then, there's the chance to put your knowledge into practice to create five gorgeous garments, each suited to a different skill level: create a hat, a sweater or a cardigan and see all your hard work pay off! Anna’s patterns are designed to be, above all, relaxing for the knitter; they are written in a clear manner, accessible to beginners, and are also size-inclusive: patterns cater for children from 3 months to 12 years, and women from UK sizes 8 to 22 (US 4 to 18; EU 36/40 to 40/54).Trade ReviewLIBRARY JOURNAL STARRED REVIEWDesigner Dervout offers a splendid introduction to a lovely and popular knitting pattern that involves using two colors or more in a single row or round. Colorwork is often used for hats, sweaters, scarves, coasters, Christmas stockings, mittens, and the like. Dervout starts the book by explaining the different types of colorwork; here she also describes the materials that colorwork knitters will need, including circular needles. There are also detailed instructions for reading a chart, selecting colors, choosing patterns, managing tension, and finishing a design and project. Each chapter provides step-by-step illustrations and a clear explanation of the technique or skill necessary to complete a project; readers are treated to five patterns.VERDICT An excellent primer for creating colorwork projects that’s size-inclusive and for all skill levels. Search Press Ltd Traditional Dutch Ganseys for Children: Over 40
Book SynopsisFrom around 1875 to 1950, Dutch fishermen wore sweaters with characteristic knit and purl stitch patterns, sometimes cable. These jerseys, known as ganseys, became an intrinsic part of the identity of the Dutchmen who wore them. Many of the children in these fishing families wore ganseys too, and numerous photos have been discovered in recent years of schoolchildren dressed in the knitwear seen on their fishermen fathers. Stella Ruhe returns with over 40 sweaters to knit from 30 different Dutch villages – this time, for your little ones to wear and ramble in. Based on the original designs shared by families and discovered in archives, Stella has created recreations of these historically important garments for our contemporary life that ooze classic style with modern minimalism. With these designs, you are offered not only a chance to pay homage to the women who lovingly knitted the jumpers and to share in a beautiful Dutch tradition, but also give something for your child to treasure for years to come. The sizes of the ganseys run from 1- to 14-years old, but can easily be adjusted to any child’s size by following Stella's straightforward measuring instructions in her chapter on knitting know-how. In the same chapter you learn that every gansey is a standard shape, meaning the beauty of each sweater is in the variation of pattern motifs and finishing details, which varies from village to village. In the gallery of knitting designs, each jumper is accompanied by knitting charts – the pattern repeat clearly shown for easy garment adjusting, a diagram of the jumper and styled, modern photography. With a wealth of fascinating background information and historical photos of the original designs alongside every design, this is an inspiring book for the ambitious knitter looking for unique, classic knitwear, and a brilliant read for anyone interested in craft, culture and heritage.Trade ReviewOver 40 sweaters for boys and girls are included in this very interesting book. Not only does this book give you several designs to knit, it also includes the history of the 'gansey' and the villages but also an insight of child labour, education and the life pre 1900. The traditional gansey is knitted with no seam, so double pointed needles will be needed. The amount of yarn needed depends on the size of the garment. The sweater sizes range in age from 1 to 14 years. The patterns are stunning, and all centred on the sea, boats and fishing. The modern photography alongside old photographs bring to life the days of then and the children of today. They merge together beautifully. The history of fishermen was most interesting, their way of life was hard and the small children on board the fisher boats had life even harder. A lot of research has gone into this book and it is a brilliant and intriguing read as well as a fabulous project book for knitters. -- Tracy Shephard * Postcard Reviews *These 40 sweaters are based on the classic jumpers of Dutch fishermen. They use original designs shared by families from 30 fishing villages and discovered in archives. Gansey sizes run from one to 14-years and each jumper has knitting charts, clear pattern repeats, diagrams and modern photos. It's a superb read for anyone interested in craft, culture and heritage. * Machine Knitting Monthly *If, like me, you enjoy knitting ganseys for small people (or even for grown-ups) and getting a buzz out of exploring the history behind what you knit, you will have great fun with this book. In addition to over 40 gansey patterns, there is a wealth of vintage photographs and information relating to children involved in the fishing industry in the Netherlands between 1860 and 1950, making this a really good read even if you never knit any of the patterns. Instead of detailed written instructions for each pattern Ruhe provides a generic description of the T-shape construction of Dutch ganseys, tips on choice of yarn, tension gauges, etc. and a charming description, with illustrations, of the cultural significance of common motifs and patterns. Instructions for each pattern include the particular size, measurements, suggested materials and a chart of the motif/pattern used. The colour scheme for the charts makes them easy to read. A comprehensive size chart is provided as part of the general knitting information, so it is easy to adapt the instructions to any age range. In addition to appealing to seasoned knitters, this book would be a good choice for fairly new knitters wishing to move to the next level of difficulty. The simple T-shape of ganseys and basic knit/purl motif construction lend themselves to projects for improving knitters. -- Gerry Pocklington * SlipKnot *Following her two books of adult patterns recreating authentic Dutch fishing ganseys, Stella Ruhe brings us more than 40 handsome, textured sweaters for children aged one to 14 years. Each charted design is accompanied by vintage photographs of the original piece, and fascinating historical details about the gansey knitting tradition in the Netherlands. * The Knitter *Table of ContentsForeword 4 The gansey 6 - Origin 8 - Knitting 9 - Designs and dating 10 - Work wear 10 - Practical sweaters 11 - Myths 12 - Boys and girls 12 Child labour and compulsory education 14 - Industrial revolution 15 - Protests 17 - Child protection laws 17 - Schooling and compulsory education 18 - The situation today 19 - Developing countries 19 Children in the fishing industry before and around 1900 20 - From father to son, from mother to daughter 22 - Social relations 23 - Poverty 25 - Food and drink 28 - Education 29 At Sea 30 - Fish culture 31 - On the luggers 32 - On the longliners 36 - Mental and physical well-being 38 - Food 38 - Besomming 39 - Stop box and clothing 39 Knitting 42 - Sagathy 44 - T-model 44 - Yarn types 45 - Amount of yarn 46 - Tools 46 - Techniques 46 - Sizing 47 - Stitches used 47 - Tension (gauge) 47 - Motifs and patterns 48 - Basic sizes 50 - Chart and sketch 50 - General knitting instructions for ganseys 51 - Knitting in the round 51 - Flat knitting 53 - General information 53 North SEa Coast 54 - Den Helder/Huisduinen 56 - Egmond aan Zee 58 - Zandvoort 60 - Noordwijk 62 - Katwijk 64 - Scheveningen 69 - Pernis 73 - Vlaardingen 76 - Zwartewaal 80 - Middelharnis 82 - Colijnsplaat 84 - Yerseke 86 - Arnemuiden 90 - De Paal 94 Major rivers 96 - Charlois 98 - Woudrichem 100 Wadden Sea Coast 104 - Terschelling 106 - Harlingen/Het Bildt/St. Jacobiparochie 108 - Wierum 112 - Paesens-Moddergat 114 Zuiderzee Coast 116 - Wervershoof/Medemblik 118 - Volendam 120 - Durgerdam/Ransdorp 123 - Bunschoten-Spakenburg 126 - Harderwijk 130 - Elburg 132 - Urk 134 - Lemmer 136 - Stavoren 138 - Workum 140 Word of Thanks 142 Credits 143

The book is aimed at beginners as well as more advanced knitters, but does not include anything more complex than basic knit and purl stitches, increasing, decreasing and some simple colourwork. Lynne Rowe covers the essential techniques at the start of the book, followed by projects that have been specifically designed for mindfulness. The projects themselves are split into five sections: Quick and Easy, Portable, Group, Big, and New Skills. Within these sections, you can choose to make things such as a wash cloth, a hat, a blanket, a shawl and an evening bag, amongst others. Every single one has been designed to promote calm and mindfulness and all the projects are beautifully photographed with clear and simple knitting patterns. The Introduction is written by Betsan Corkhill, an experienced healthcare professional who founded the community interest company stitchlinks.com in 2005. It has grown into a global online community for those who enjoy the therapeutic benefits of craft, and in particular, knitting. Betsan has also advised on the projects included in the book and repetitive techniques to promote a calm state. The five sections have different ways of promoting calm and the feelgood factor: Quick and Easy: the projects in this section are designed for when you when you feel like a quick fix to raise your mood. Use your favourite colours and textures to enhance the benefits of the rhythmic movements and the feelgood effects. The feeling of success you experience will motivate and inspire you. Portable: These smaller projects are even more portable, so keep one in your bag at all times. Use it to manage stress on the go, on your commute to work, in your lunch break, when travelling or at any other time when life is getting a bit much and you need to feel calm. Group: Getting together with friends to knit, chat and laugh over a cuppa is one of life’s joys. Supportive friends help us to live longer, healthier, happier lives so why not combine the calming nature of knitting with the support of being with friends? It’s a powerful way to switch off your stress fight-or-flight response and switch on a bit of fun, play and laughter. Big: It’s a lovely cosy feeling to sit quietly at home with your Big project on your lap, keeping you warm as you knit. New Skills: Learning new skills on a regular basis is essential for nurturing a healthy brain, opening new neural pathways and even encouraging the growth of new brain cells right into old age. They are designed specifically to stimulate your creative mind. Whatever your skill level, there are plenty of projects in this book to help you achieve calm, bust those stress levels and enjoy a pastime which is creative, fun and produces beautiful projects to wear, or for the home.Trade ReviewThis inspiring title helps consumers to create beautiful projects designed to calm and soothe. Knitting is well-known as a relaxing and therapeutic pastime, and while crafters are staying at home during the lockdown period, it's the perfect time to promote knitting as a way to improve mental health and general well-being. Whether you choose a portable project to knit on the go, a group project to fo with friends, or one that introduces new skills to stimulate a creative mind, this title is the perfect path to keeping calm. The projects are split into five sections: Quick and Easy, Portable, Group, Big, and New Skills. Within these sections, you can choose to make things such as a washcloth, a hat, a blanket, a shawl and even an evening bag, amongst others. Every pattern has been designed with mindfulness in mind, accompanied by beautiful photographs and clear, simple instructions. * Craft Business *A fantastic book. Clear instructions and plenty of pictures to enable knitters of all abilities to have a go at the projects. * Em Day *I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. I've tried to learn to knit twice before, with pretty dire results, my hands just don't seem to get it. The book arrived swiftly, and well packaged. I read through twice, and the instructions are clear and concise, with a few hints and tips. The last week I've actually managed, with the help of this book, to knit a recognisable shape. Hopefully with a little more practice I'll be able to progress onto knitting clothes or toys! The only thing stopping it being a 5* review is that I expected there to be more of a link to mindfulness and using knitting as a sort of calming or selfsoothing therapy. Unfortunately this isn't as well done as I'd hoped, and is just a few suggestions to be calm while attempting to knit. Otherwise an excellent book for a novice knitter such as myself. * Gemma Myatt *This book is fabulous. Lots of easy patterns and really relaxing and fun to do. After having major surgery it truly has been wonderful to sit, relax and concentrate on some simple, fun patterns. I am making the bunting at the moment for my granddaughters Wendy house. I stopped knitting a couple of years ago but am so thrilled to have been given this book. Starting again on these small fun projects has definitely given me the knitting bug again * Jo Carter *I really like this book. The title suggests you will find stress relief, much like the mindful colouring books, by using it. To me, it also indicates that a novice to knitting, a complete beginner, will be able to access this craft. Indeed, the book is aimed at the beginner knitter - although there are some more complex techniques in the "New Skills" section - and the projects on offer are those typically found in basic knitting books: scarves, hats, fingerless mittens, a basic teddy bear, bag, shawl etc. So why is this book different? Both Betsan Corkhill (the healthcare professional) and Lynne Rowe (experienced knitter and teacher) write a foreward or introduction about how therapeutic knitting can benefit your health, as well as how to use this book. Each section is introduced thoughtfully - phrases include 'quick fix to raise your mood', 'feelgood effects', 'the feeling of success will motivate and inspire you.' Projects are well organised in sections that follow 'a creative path' as suggested by the sub-heading (Quick & Easy; Portable; Group; Big; New skills) and beautifully photographed against neutral backgrounds or the beach - very tranquil! The font is well chosen and the layout of each page colour co-ordinated and not remotely 'busy' as some knitting patterns are. A beginner would not find themselves overwhelmed. All techniques needed are easy to understand and well illustrated - the 'knitting-in-the-round' description is the simplest I've ever seen! - and all techniques are listed in the index at the back for ease of reference. Not understanding how to achieve an effect is one of my biggest causes of stress, so this element of the book has been well researched. I wouldn't necessarily buy it myself (I was sent a copy in return for an Amazon review) as I'm an experienced knitter with a small knitting business and create my own patterns. However, I have several friends who have occasionally come to me with advice on knitting as a possible means of stress-relief, and I've always helped as much as I can. In future, I will be recommending this book, and indeed will be listing it on my Facebook page (Kwerky Knits). I can see myself buying it as a gift too. Let me leave you with a description of the opening title page photo: feet in knitted socks (from this book) resting on a comfy cushion (from this book) beside a teapot and mug in cosies (from this book)...a roaring fire in the background. Feeling calm yet?! * Angela Blay *I found the book quite good and as a novice knitter it was lovely to see some easier knits! * Ari Taylor *I find knitting itself quite therapeutic and a great stress reliever so this book is great to encourage this, its also ideal for beginners as it has simple instructions and the layout was clear and simple and not too' fussy'. it has a simple explanation into each technique ie stitch, tension, and casting on etc at the back of the book which I found interesting and very helpful being a novice. It was good that there were different options such as 'quick and easy projects' and if you had some time you could go onto the 'big projects' which I found nice, and also under theses headings were little tips such as taking your knitting on the go to help manage stress while out and about! * Kirsty Webb *I found that the idea of starting a big project would be calming as you have something long term you can keep going back to, which to me is calming and something to look forward to! * Jane Symonds *Overall I think this is a great book if your looking to relieve stress as a beginner but even if your not I still think it has some lovely projects which you would enjoy and in itself will help relax you, the book itself does not tell you how to knit yourself calm but the actual process of it-it works.I cant wait to try some of the more challenging projects :o) * Patricia M. Shepard *A helpful little book. Good advice as to how knitting can make you calm and some lovely patterns to try. Some patterns were easy and some required a little more knitting experience but overall very appealing. The only criticism would be that the the info in the introduction about the way each section was to be of benefit could have been re-iterated on each pattern. Overall I feel some people will find it useful others may just enjoy the patterns but any benefit is helpful. * Margaret Benson *Would have liked to have more information about how knitting can make you calm, and using the information to link to the patterns. As it stands, it's a perfectly ok knitting book, but it doesn't seem to cover the concept of how and why knitting makes you de-stress. * Carole Phillips *This book might not be what I expected but I like it. I need to say that I'm not a prolific knitter. I know the basics but that's about it. This book is perfect for beginners, or people like me who have little experience of knitting. There is a section at the end that covers the basics with clear pictures that I find really useful. The "projects" are split into groups: quick and easy, portable, group, big, and new skills. I think a few of them stand out as the kind of projects I want to have a go at: the patchwork blanket that incorporates lots of different stitches and colours (I'm sure you can pick it up easily whenever), the nursery blanket looks quite trendy, and so does the evening purse. * Charlotte Forcer *Books touting the stress-busting properties of crafting are commonplace, and this collection, cowritten by two knitters who have researched the therapeutic benefits of knitting, provides a bounty of simple, low-frustration projects. Rowe and Corkhill group their designs by type—quick and easy, portable, group, big, and new skills—so knitters are free to choose the one appropriate for their situation. Most include fairly simple, easy-to-memorize, basic stitch patterns. Knitters who prefer exploring more complicated techniques will find a few projects in the “new skills” section, which includes simple stranded knitting, cables, and duplicate stitch. VERDICT Rowe and Corkhill see the mindful aspects of knitting as something serious and enduring rather than trendy, and it shows. Beginning knitters looking for a way to unwind will find both projects and tips in this collection. * Library Journal, USA *This book was borne out of a survey into the benefits of knitting undertaken in 2013 and reported in the British Journal of Occupational Therapy. It is said that knitting is relaxing and helps reduce or manage stress. I would agree with that as a lifelong knitter, apart from the times when I make a mistake and hate knitting with a vengeance. A rare occurrence as it happens. This book includes 16 projects designed by Lynne Rowe and wellbeing expert Betsan Corkhill. Simple and quick projects help you to familiarise yourself with the joys of knitting. There are group projects, portable ones and larger projects. The projects don't just go for basic garter stitch, they introduce pattern too. There are the standard hats and scarves but also washcloths, socks, a huggable teddy, blankets, bunting, shawl, bag, purse, mitts, hot water bottle cover, a teacosy and mug warmers. Please note the socks use 5 needles and the hat is knitted on circular needles - this for me is the most stressful kind of knitting. Socks can be knitted on two needles. Basic knitting instructions are given at the back of the book with step-by-step clear photos. The book takes you from basic knitting - garter, rib, two-row patterns up to chevrons, cables and intarsia. A good balance of projects and a great starter knitting book. * Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *Create beautiful projects designed to calm and soothe. The introduction is written by Betsan Corkhill, an experienced healthcare professional who founded the community interest company stitchlinks.com in 2005. It has grown into a global online community for those who enjoy the therapeutic benefits of craft, and in particular, knitting. Betsan has also advised on the projects included in the book and the repetitive techniques promote a calm state. Knitting is a relaxing and therapeutic pastime, and this winning combination focuses on mindfulness and the perfect stress-busting knitting projects. Whether you choose a portable project to knit on the go, a group project to do with friends, or one that introduces new skills to stimulate a creative mind, this book is the perfect path to keeping calm. The book is aimed at beginners as well as more advanced knitters but does not include anything more complex than basic knit and purl stitches, increasing, decreasing and some simple colourwork. Lynne Rowe covers the essential techniques at the start of the book, followed by projects that have been specifically designed for mindfulness. The projects themselves are split into five sections: Quick and Easy, Portable, Group, Big and New Skills. Within these sections, you can choose to make things such as a washcloth, a hat, a blanket, a shawl, and an evening bag, amongst others. Every single one has been designed to promote calm and mindfulness and all the projects are beautifully photographed with clear and simple knitting patterns. Whatever your skill level, there are plenty of projects in this book to help you achieve calm, bust those stress levels and enjoy a pastime which is creative, fun and produces beautiful projects to wear, or for the home. * Hot Brands Cool Places *Table of ContentsQuick & Easy: Washcloths, Men's Scarf, Chunky Cushions, Portable: Cartridge Stitch Cowl, Hats, Socks, Group: Squares Blanket, Bunting, Teddy Big Projects: Nursery Blanket, Shawl, Bag New Skills: Tea Cosy and Mug Cosy, Cabled Mittens, Herringbone Stitch Evening Bag, Hot Water Bottle Techniques: Tension, Casting on (the 2 methods), Casting of, How to knit and purl, Garter stitch and stocking stitch, Increasing, Decreasing, Knitting in the Round, Blocking, Mattress stitch, Making a pom-pom, Picking up stitches Kitchener stitch, Tea Cosy and Mug Cosy: Fairisle, Cabled Mittens: Cables, Hot Water Bottle Cover: Duplicate stitch

Search Press Ltd The Very Easy Guide to Cable Knitting:
Book SynopsisThis very easy guide opens up the wonderful world of twisted stitches to knitters of any ability, even complete beginners. It is an indispensable introduction to all kinds of stitches, from simple mock cables to intricate bobble-textured plaits, for both cable panels, accents, and all-over repeats. Learn the basic techniques and practise the stitches with clear instructions and step-by step photos – then use your skills to make 13 specially designed projects, from giant-cable throws that stitch up quickly on large needles, to snuggly hats and scarves and more adventurous accessories and home comforts. Each stitch pattern is featured in both written and chart form so you can get used to using either method when working from other commercial patterns. So whether you’re a knitting novice or a dab hand, cables have never been easier to make. This is a reissue of the previously best-selling published book The Very Easy Guide to Cable Knitting (9781844485314).Trade ReviewFirst published in 2010, Watterson's "very easy guide" follows a logical approach to cable knitting, dividing the instructions into 21 lessons and 13 projects. Both front- and back-end lessons establish the basics, from yarns and chart reading to blocking/pressing and aftercare essentials. In between are the three grouped cabling guides—mock cables, cable panels, and cable patterns. Each includes a quick overview, then launches into patterns (some with variations), filled with colour photographs of finished examples, charts, and written details. Plus the projects: scarf, storage basket, baby blanket, knitting bag, cushion, and more. Tips are scattered throughout (e.g., keep one label from the yarn as well as a snippet) as are designer tips (how to fringe, for example). No level of difficulty is indicated, though readers can assume that projects progress from easy to more difficult. Knitters will need to flip to the appendices for abbreviation definitions. A good second step after consulting references like the Vogue Knitting series. -- Barbara Jacobs * Booklist, July Issue *I love books like this as they give you so many ideas of different stitches that can be used. The bonus with this book is that it has a selection of projects where you can apply cable stitches. The patterns are all easy to follow with clear written instruction and the photos make it clear how the end project should look. There are a variety of yarns used from Dk to super quick projects using chunky wool. The samples with different cables have charts as well as written instructions, so are great for visual learners who may find it tricky to follow written instructions. If you are not a fan of traditional cable you can try some of the “mock” cable stitches where you do not need a cable needle. This book would be a great addition to your stitch library. -- Monica Russel Author and Knitwear designerTable of ContentsIntroduction 6 Lesson 1: Yarns 8, Lesson 2: Knitting kit 10, Lesson 3: Cable needles 12 Knitting basics 14 Lesson 4: Casting on 16, Lesson 5: Knit and purl 18, Lesson 6: Reversible fabrics 20, Lesson 7: Casting off 21, Lesson 8: Tension 22, Lesson 9: Charts 24 THE CABLES 26 Lesson 10: Mock cables 28 Technique: Binding stitches 30, The stitch collection 32, Project 1: Mug and tea cosies 50, Project 2: Placemat and napkin ring 54, Project 3: Scarf 56, Project 4: Storage basket 58 Lesson 11: Cable panels 60 Technique: Working a simple cable 62, The stitch collection 64, Project 5: Hot water bottle cover 82, Project 6: Hand muff 84, Project 7: Cushion and bolster 86, Project 8: Throw and cushion 88 Lesson 12: Cable patterns 92 Technique: Twisting stitches 94, The stitch collection 96, Project 9: Oblong cushion 116, Project 10: Knitting bag 118, Project 11: Baby blanket 120, Project 12: Handbag 122, Project 13: Floor cushion 124 FINISHING TECHNIQUES 126 Lesson 13: Blocking and pressing 128, Lesson 14: Perfect seams 130, Lesson 15: Tassels 132, Lesson 16: Pompoms 133, Lesson 17: Twisted cord 134, Lesson 18: Fringing 135, Lesson 19: Adding buttons 136, Lesson 20: Decorative thongs 138, Lesson 21: Aftercare essentials 139 Abbreviations and chart symbols 140 Index 142

Search Press Ltd A Knitter's Year: 30 Modern Knits for Every
Book SynopsisVersatile, stylish and sustainable, this stunning collection of patterns includes snuggly mittens and beanies as well as chunky sweaters, flattering dresses, cool summer tops and even a zipped skirt. Bursting with Nordic charm and elegance, and the perfect antidote to fast fashion, every garment in this book has been lovingly designed to last. A Knitter's Year will see you through four seasons of clothes to make for your whole family; each piece is lovingly designed by the author, Ida, who is shown throughout the book, modelling the garments, along with her family, in their native Norway. The clothes include jackets, jumpers and skirts for adults, as well as cosy winter gear for the children. A Knitter's Year features 30 projects, so you'll never be wanting for inspiration, whatever the season. Some projects are new and exclusive to the book, and all designed with love by Ida herself. Trade ReviewThis book is not your branded normal knitter’s companion, nor is it a basic exploration into knitting in general. With its relaxed, I felt “hygge’’ vibe, its attractive to all, including those like myself who are not experienced knitters by any means, yet wish to still create something wearable and have that push, that temptation to really “do” hit – not just look at it on the printed page and imagine its fruition. I judge this as a perfect weekend cosy corner read, grab your IKEA blanket, a big old cup of the old coffee, a bowl of whatever your taste fancies…this book and yes, PREPLAN by deciding on the project illustrated you wish to tackle first - I tell you - begin! No season is passed over. All projects are practical, yet some may be more achievable and have more use value. For example, I myself am more attracted to the chunky cardigans and jumpers than the dresses and zipped skirt - but hey, you may have a different opinion and find the items hold a nostalgic or novelty value. The personal touch via the author themselves being the model, captured wearing the projects in her native country Norway, fits this book’s content beautifully. The book in its printed form is a bulky heavy issue, with a hardback cover. Thematically this marries well with the books sustainable, non-fashion, clothing built-to-last vibe. With its 30 projects, I discovered at least five I want to have a go of. Ida must be rather proud of herself as this book is so under her artistic control, with the patterns, the photography and the modelling all done by her fair hand. It is obviously her literary baby. -- Ailish Henderson * www.ailishhenderson.com *Versatile, stylish and sustainable, this collection of patterns has four seasons of family clothes. Search Press Ltd The Knitter’s Stitch Collection: A Creative Guide
Book SynopsisThis is a creative guide to the 300 knitting stitches you really need to know, including contemporary stitches and timeless classics. An invaluable resource of original stitch patterns, this collection is suitable for newcomers, designers and knitters of all abilities. Instead of being merely a round-up of familiar stitches, this is a visual feast of new material put together by expert author-designers Lesley Stanfield and Melody Griffiths, with a wide experience of hand knitting. It is a must-have addition to existing reference books on the subject. The stitches are organized into knit and purl, textures and ribs, twist stitches, cables, lace, bobbles and bells, colour and intarsia designs, and unusual techniques including rarities like entrelac, double-sided fabric and mosaic effects. Clear and simple charts are provided with each pattern throughout the book. This is a reissue of the previously published book.Trade ReviewThis is a creative guide to the 300 knitting stitches and timeless classics for newcomers, designers and knitters of all abilities. It's a feast of new material and a must-have addition to existing reference books on the subject. * Machine Knitting Monthly *Stanfield's classic receives a facelift in The Knitter's Stitch Collection. Originally called The Essential Stitch Collection for Knitters, the fundamental framework of the book is relatively unchanged. Divided into eight categories, from knit and purl to letters and numbers, every section first displays all the stitches in color swatches (called the stitch selector), then singles out the stitch, featuring a bit of description along with charts and, usually, written directions. Dominated by cable and lace variations, the stitch names are fairly evocative: Celtic knot, kilim star, polka dot, allium. Symbols run as a bottom-of-the-page banner and are more thoroughly explained in the last chapter along with inserts on using the stitches, a gallery of ideas, instructions on essential techniques, and abbreviations and symbols. Still a vital reference for any category of knitter. -- Barbara Jacobs * Booklist *This book has something for every knitter from the starter wishing to develop their skills to the more advanced who would like greater challenges. I like the way that the ideas are graded and the fact that the book does not focus on one technique. A book like this is akin to a recipe book where you will delve in and out for inspiration. The book would be great for creating the knitter’s first designs whether it be a scarf or a blanket using different stitches for squares. All instructions are clear and different methods are explained fully. The diagrams and charts are a good size so that the user can easily see the finished results and follow the graphics. If one prefers written instructions one would need to use an alternative book. I would have no hesitation in recommending this book. * Monica Russel, author of Nordic Knits for Children *It is difficult to find much to say about a stitch dictionary: if you know the Harmony Guides you will be familiar with many of these stitches. However, the authors have also added new, more complex cables and some unusual stitches. Something that I have not seen before is a chapter on knitting letters in a eyelet stitches, which might be useful to incorporate into a gift for someone. * Slipknot *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6, About this book 8, The Stitch Collection 10, Knit and purl 12, Twists 26, Cables 48, Lace 80, Bobbles and leaves 104, Stranded and intarsia 130, Unusual stitches 152, Letters/Numbers 168, Knit Know-how 184, Using the stitches 186, Gallery of ideas 192, Essential techniques 194, Reading the charts 200, Abbreviations and symbols 204, Index 206

Hoaki Mastering Machine Knitting: From the Thread to
Book SynopsisIn the world of textiles, knitted fabric is one of the most complicated to work with but also one of the most used. This is a book for all fashion lovers who, while fascinated by knitted fabric, have not dared to venture into this field as well as for advanced and professional knitters who want to systematically round off their knowledge. It includes all the steps necessary to create a knitted garment, from the choice of yarn to manufacturing apparel, explaining such things as how to use a flatbed knitting machine correctly and the linking, cutting, sewing and, ultimately, ironing of knitted garments. The book not only takes into account how crucial it is to recognize and develop a stitch. It also acknowledges the increasing importance of knowing how to represent stitches for different machines in a useful way. For the first time, the author describes the various stitches in a clear and well-structured way with a language of symbols developed for use with all kinds of studio and domestic knitting machines regardless of the brand: Brother, Silver Reed, Passap, Coppo and Dubied. The book includes examples of working with traditional materials like wool, alpaca, cotton and linen but also encourages experiments with paper, plastic materials and vegetal and metallic yarns to create texture, three-dimensional effects and unusual volumes.

The projects epitomize Scandinavian chic: the first section, “The Best Everyday Sweaters,” features a gray “Power Sweater” and a chunky V-neck “Lasse Sweater.” A selection of “Stylish Knitwear” includes such standouts as the “Queen Coatigan,” a long, open cardigan with “decorative balloon sleeves and chunky cables,” and the “Wave Sweater,” with small cables that mimic waves. It gives yarn type, thickness, length and needle size which is great when looking for alternative yarn. It’s a brilliant idea as a Christmas present for an avid knitter and would be suitable for all levels. Excellent value! * Customer Review *This book is fantastic value. Whether you’re looking for Icelandic, Viking, cables, men's, women's or children's knits, this book has it. The few preview photos given don’t do it justice. The only bad part... Which project to do first?! * Customer Review *Lasse L. Matberg comes from a family who, for generations, have been working to create beautiful, quality crafted items by hand fathers and grandfathers were craftsmen, and mothers and grandmothers often worked hard knitting warm garments for the whole family. Viking Knits is a tribute to good-quality, practical needlework, inspired by the Vikings’ warm, all-weather garments. From tough-wearing sweaters and outerwear to elegant cardigans and jackets, all have been made in a beautiful Scandinavian style. Whether you love traditional, Nordic colourwork patterns and cables, or modern, textured knits, there’s something for everyone. Clear instructions are provided for each project, and charts are included where needed. * Craft Focus, December/ January issue *Known as 'The Viking' in social media, Lasse L. Matberg's debut book, Viking Knits, features more than 40 beautifully crafted Scandinavian knits for men, women and children. Combining versatility and tradition, the pieces include hardwearing jumpers, stylish outwear and cosy cardigans. With over one million followers on social media (@lasselom), even the non-knitters among us will love this insight into Lasse's Nordic lifestyle and heritage. * Simply Scandi, Issue 9 *This publication contains over 40 patterns for men (18), women (9) and children (6) plus a section of accessories (10). The designs cover tough-wearing sweaters (The Best Everyday Sweaters) and outerwear (Knits For The Great Outdoors) to elegant cardigans and jackets (Stylish Knitwear). There is also a section on Nordic colourwork, cable knits and modern, textured knits, and some of which are inspired by Viking culture. Overall, the designs reflect the Scandinavian love for being warm and practical. It’s nice to see a good range of designs for men. Each pattern is graded by its level of difficulty (beginner, intermediate, experienced); written instructions are minimal but straightforward and are supported by charts plus abbreviations. There are no schematics, however, for the patterns. The downside to the patterns is that the suggested yarns are not available in the UK, but could be easily substituted taking the necessary steps to check for tension (gauge), yarn properties and of course grist. But each pattern provides all the necessary information to help with this. Other helpful tips for getting the best from a design are also given where necessary for some patterns. The book opens well, and remains open on the page one is working from, which is a definite plus for knitters. All the designs are nicely photographed with a definite Nordic flavour. -- Rita Owen * Mid-Herts Guild *Table of ContentsPreface 7 Yarn 8 Abbreviations 9 THE BEST EVERYDAY SWEATERS 10 Lasse Sweater 12, Power Sweater 18, Synne Sweater – women 24, Fiaba Sweater – women 30 KNITS FOR THE GREAT OUTDOORS 34 Spark Jacket 36, Spark Sweater – women 40, Spark Sweater – children 44, Heart Sweater 50, Mountaintop Sweater 54, Mountaintop Sweater – women 58, Mountaintop Sweater – children 62, Sailor Sweater 66, Sailor Sweater – children 70, Breeze Sweater 74, Breeze Sweater – women 78, Breeze Sweater – children 82, Saga Sweater 86, Saga Sweater – women 90, Saga Sweater – children 94, Stylish Knitwear 98, Sunburst Sweater – women 100, Moonlight Sweater 104, Knight Jacket 110, Queen Coatigan – women 114, Wave Sweater 118, Midsummer Sweater 122, Papa Sweater 126 NORSE SWEATERS 130 The Viking 132, Storm Hoodie 136, Joy Sweater – women 140, Joy Sweater – children 144, Ocean Waves sweater 148, Three Swords Sweater 152, Glima Sweater 156 COSY ACCESSORIES 160 Brioche Scarf 162, Cuffed Hat and Mittens – for adults and children 164, Rest-and-Sit Mat 168, Breeze Hat – for adults and children 170, Sailor Hat 172, Sailor Hat – children 174, Saga Hat – for adults and children 176, Saga Mat 180, Scarf in the Round 184, Double-brimmed Hat – for adults and children 186

I really wasn't disappointed. It's jam packed full of information and fantastic step-by-step instructions. The book really does cover an amazing amount. At the beginning you are taking through everything you need to know before you start. What yarn to choose, needles and other tools & equipment you will need or want. Then you are taken through everything from tension/gauge to how to read knitting patterns and charts. Now this book isn't just for beginners but it is invaluable to anyone who wants to learn anything about knitting. You are taken through how to hold the yarn and needles, casting on, essential stitches and other basic stitches. Then it's onto casting off and how to join new yarn. I love the section on selvedges (adding an edge to your knitting). I've been winging it and this book breaks it down so it's really easy to follow. The next section of the book takes you through shaping, holding stitches, picking up stitches, working short rows & rib stitches. Then it's onto making buttonholes and the most important section - fixing mistakes. This book has so much in it that it will keep you busy for years to come. I won't learn everything in this book at once. I'm going to use it everytime I come to a pattern that I need help with. I really feel this book can help me with anything I need to learn with knitting. AMAZING! * Crochet Addict UK *t’s a great book with a fantastic amount of knowledge, which I know I shall find very useful.
