Search Press Ltd The Very Easy Guide to Cable Knitting:
Book SynopsisThis very easy guide opens up the wonderful world of twisted stitches to knitters of any ability, even complete beginners. It is an indispensable introduction to all kinds of stitches, from simple mock cables to intricate bobble-textured plaits, for both cable panels, accents, and all-over repeats. Learn the basic techniques and practise the stitches with clear instructions and step-by step photos – then use your skills to make 13 specially designed projects, from giant-cable throws that stitch up quickly on large needles, to snuggly hats and scarves and more adventurous accessories and home comforts. Each stitch pattern is featured in both written and chart form so you can get used to using either method when working from other commercial patterns. So whether you’re a knitting novice or a dab hand, cables have never been easier to make. This is a reissue of the previously best-selling published book The Very Easy Guide to Cable Knitting (9781844485314).Trade ReviewFirst published in 2010, Watterson's "very easy guide" follows a logical approach to cable knitting, dividing the instructions into 21 lessons and 13 projects. Both front- and back-end lessons establish the basics, from yarns and chart reading to blocking/pressing and aftercare essentials. In between are the three grouped cabling guides—mock cables, cable panels, and cable patterns. Each includes a quick overview, then launches into patterns (some with variations), filled with colour photographs of finished examples, charts, and written details. Plus the projects: scarf, storage basket, baby blanket, knitting bag, cushion, and more. Tips are scattered throughout (e.g., keep one label from the yarn as well as a snippet) as are designer tips (how to fringe, for example). No level of difficulty is indicated, though readers can assume that projects progress from easy to more difficult. Knitters will need to flip to the appendices for abbreviation definitions. A good second step after consulting references like the Vogue Knitting series. -- Barbara Jacobs * Booklist, July Issue *I love books like this as they give you so many ideas of different stitches that can be used. The bonus with this book is that it has a selection of projects where you can apply cable stitches. The patterns are all easy to follow with clear written instruction and the photos make it clear how the end project should look. There are a variety of yarns used from Dk to super quick projects using chunky wool. The samples with different cables have charts as well as written instructions, so are great for visual learners who may find it tricky to follow written instructions. If you are not a fan of traditional cable you can try some of the “mock” cable stitches where you do not need a cable needle. Search Press Ltd Fair Isle Knitting: A Practical & Inspirational
Book SynopsisFair Isle knitting has a timeless appeal, and is celebrated all over the world for its beautiful patterns and distinctive motifs. Using just two colours in each row you can create a myriad of different patterns that are deceptively easy to achieve. In this definitive guide, expert knitting designer and best-selling author Monica Russel teaches you the essential skills of this traditional colourwork technique and provides all the inspiration you need to create stunning Fair Isle patterns of your own. The book includes a fascinating history of Fair Isle knitting, and takes a close look at the yarns, needles and other tools you need to get started in colourwork There are step-by-step instructions on the key techniques for creating Fair Isle patterns, including choosing colours and using charts, all illustrated with step-by-step photographs and an abundance of colourful examples A stunning collection of pattern swatches provides inspiration and instruction for over 45 borders, patterns and motifs, all accompanied by a written pattern, chart and examples in various colourways To practise your new skills, there are 14 items to knit, ranging from a simple hat to a stunning dress and waistcoat. Trade ReviewStarting with the very basics of Fair Isle knitting, history, supplies and techniques, this is a great book to ease a knitter new to Fair Isle knitting into the fold. The illustrations, charts and photos are large; it’s easy to see what’s going on when techniques are demonstrated, and to read charts without recopying. A knitter is lured into Fair Isle by starting with Fair Isle border motifs, before tackling all over motifs, and then Fair Isle animal motifs. Each motif has a short explanation, a full color chart and at least one color variation and a knitted swatch. There are 14 patterns evenly split between each style of motif. There are sweaters for adults and children, hats, pillows, throws, a shawl and a dress. I really appreciate that they are for not only a variety of levels and time commitments, from a pillow to a dress, but that Ms. Russell explores different weight yarns and non-traditional colors. There’s nothing too wild, but I’d happily knit a worsted weight project shot through with lime and orange. Monica Russell’s tone is light and friendly, encouraging knitters to try a little, Fair Isle, to mix motifs and boarders how they want to and just to enjoy the process and creativity of Fair Isle knitting. -- Jillian Moreno * Knitty.com *I received this book to review and am so pleased with it. The book has really good photographs and instructions with a good range of projects for different levels. I have previously avoided Fair Isle as I thought it too complicated but this book has definitely inspired me to have a go. I was particularly drawn to the chapter on animal motifs which will make a good starting point before working up to the more intricate patterns. Looking forward to making the Duck Nursery Blanket. -- Caroline Morgan * Customer review *A very useful book to have if you are a learner on avid knitter. Plenty of instructions make knitting fair isle a pleasure to do. Love all the swatches to see the patterns. The animals being a joy to knit with instructions being so clear. I'm an absolute beginner at fair isle knitting and there are simple instructions/diagrams and photos to assist you on your fair isle journey. I particularly like the inclusion of charts of colour variations for the different designs. Seeing knitted samples is an extra bonus, which will be invaluable to me on my learning journey. There are some lovely projects in this book and I'm looking forward to increasing my skills with the help of this book. A very good reference book with years of dipping in and out of it. -- Pamela Hainsworth * Customer review *I absolutely love this book. It will be a great addition to my bookshelf. There are some wonderful pictures to help guide you through the designs, as well as clear charts to follow. It begins with the basics, which yarn or needles... How to knit in the round, floats at the back of the knitting, sewing on a button and attaching embellishments. Even seaming and finishing are included, so ideal for beginners and novices to colourwork. Then, the charts. So pretty and lots of options to choose your own colours and add them to whatever you’re knitting. So many designs from the easier 2 colour designs to more intricate and traditional. After those are some amazing patterns, socks, cushion cover, children’s clothing to adult sweaters. All a variety of styles and difficulty levels giving everyone an opportunity to make something. This book has something for everyone. Clear instructions and beautifully photographed, making it ideal as a gift or just a treat to add to your own crafting library. -- Ellie Just Ellie * Customer review *This practical guide to Fair Isle offers easy-to-follow techniques and inspiration that will be invaluable to beginners or improving colourwork knitters. As well as photo tutorials on all the essential techniques, there is a stitch dictionary filled with design ideas, plus 14 knitting projects including garments and accessories for men, women and children. * The Knitter *First things first: this is not traditional Fair Isle. The motifs are often modern and bright with the themes such as flowers, cherries, dancing ladies, ducks and alpacas as well as various geometric shapes. Each motif is shown knitted up as a swatch as well as in a chart, and in various colour variations. The book is in two main sections. The first covers the basics of Fair Isle history as well as colour theory and techniques. The second, larger part of the book, is a series of charted motifs with projects that use some of them; jumpers, hats, socks, blankets, and cushions. I would definitely find space for it on my craft shelves. -- Rebecca Price * Slipknot *Table of ContentsIntroduction History of Fair Isle Yarns Materials & equipment Colour TECHNIQUES How to hold the yarn Tension Starting a new ball of wool Fair Isle knitting basics Reading the charts Knitting abbreviations Finishing Embellishing FAIR ISLE DESIGNS Border gallery Projects with borders - Simple Snowflake Hat - Crowned Snowflake Hat - Campion Yoked Sweater - Skroo Socks - Croft Child’s Dress - Jake's Sweater - Pattern gallery - Projects with patterns - Retro Cushion Cover - Dogtooth Bag - Lerwick Waistcoat - Rose Shawl - Shetland Dress Animal motif gallery Animal motif projects - Duck Nursery Blanket - Sheep cushion - Ptarmigan Child’s Cardigan with Hat Index 144

Search Press Ltd A Knitter's Year: 30 Modern Knits for Every
Book SynopsisVersatile, stylish and sustainable, this stunning collection of patterns includes snuggly mittens and beanies as well as chunky sweaters, flattering dresses, cool summer tops and even a zipped skirt. Bursting with Nordic charm and elegance, and the perfect antidote to fast fashion, every garment in this book has been lovingly designed to last. A Knitter's Year will see you through four seasons of clothes to make for your whole family; each piece is lovingly designed by the author, Ida, who is shown throughout the book, modelling the garments, along with her family, in their native Norway. The clothes include jackets, jumpers and skirts for adults, as well as cosy winter gear for the children. A Knitter's Year features 30 projects, so you'll never be wanting for inspiration, whatever the season. Some projects are new and exclusive to the book, and all designed with love by Ida herself. Trade ReviewThis book is not your branded normal knitter’s companion, nor is it a basic exploration into knitting in general. With its relaxed, I felt “hygge’’ vibe, its attractive to all, including those like myself who are not experienced knitters by any means, yet wish to still create something wearable and have that push, that temptation to really “do” hit – not just look at it on the printed page and imagine its fruition. I judge this as a perfect weekend cosy corner read, grab your IKEA blanket, a big old cup of the old coffee, a bowl of whatever your taste fancies…this book and yes, PREPLAN by deciding on the project illustrated you wish to tackle first - I tell you - begin! No season is passed over. All projects are practical, yet some may be more achievable and have more use value. For example, I myself am more attracted to the chunky cardigans and jumpers than the dresses and zipped skirt - but hey, you may have a different opinion and find the items hold a nostalgic or novelty value. The personal touch via the author themselves being the model, captured wearing the projects in her native country Norway, fits this book’s content beautifully. The book in its printed form is a bulky heavy issue, with a hardback cover. Thematically this marries well with the books sustainable, non-fashion, clothing built-to-last vibe. With its 30 projects, I discovered at least five I want to have a go of. Ida must be rather proud of herself as this book is so under her artistic control, with the patterns, the photography and the modelling all done by her fair hand. It is obviously her literary baby. -- Ailish Henderson * www.ailishhenderson.com *Versatile, stylish and sustainable, this collection of patterns has four seasons of family clothes. Each stitch described using UK terms is accompanied by clear step-by-step instructions and photographs, and handy quick-stitch boxes that include key stitch details as well as the US equivalents. Once you’ve conquered your stitches, get stuck into your first projects, starting from the easiest designs to the more complex ones to crochet. These 12 projects range from sweet and simple coasters and scarves, to a stunning hexie pillow and hat ‘n’ mitten set. With each new project, learn a new technique to gradually build your knowledge and familiarity with crocheting. To reward your efforts, Sarah-Jayne then treats you to a section on advanced stitches that you can use to crochet her ‘Showstopper Blanket’ a beautiful, textured blanket that you’d be proud to drape on your bed or sofa. We say: These gorgeous patterns will inspire crochet novices and more confident crocheters alike. * Craft Focus, December/ January issue *Over the last few years, Sarah-Jayne Fragola has built up an enviable online reputation as a crochet expert with her YouTube tutorials under the name Bella Coco. With this book, she has created a well-laid-out guide for the complete beginner. The first sections cover the basics such as the 'anatomy of a crochet hook'. There is a table of the different sizing schemes with the recommendations that 'the most accurate measurements for a hook is the metric sizing'. The types of hooks now available are described. After a brief look at other useful equipment, there is a section on the different ways yarns are presented (balls, skeins, hanks, etc.) and how to interpret both yarn weights and types. The following section on colour presents an easy-to-follow look at the colour wheel theory. The book then moves on to giving step-by-step instructions on the basic crochet stitches - all well illustrated by clear photographs [...] Useful information is then given on swatching, the different terminology and abbreviations used within UK and USA patterns, and the international symbols for charting patterns. This general information part of the book covers the various blocking techniques. The remaining part of the book is taken up with the nine projects which are 'arranged in order of difficulty, from the easiest to the more complex'. Sarah-Jayne has 'designed the projects so that new techniques are added with each one'. This book has been very well produced and will be of great benefit to anyone wanting to start on this wonderful craft. It would also be good for anyone wanting to increase their confidence and skill. -- LInde Merrick * Slip Knot *5 Stars! "...A fantastic course for beginners!" The Crowood Press Ltd Knitting Stitch-led Design
Book SynopsisKnitting is one of the most versatile and exciting of textile structures. This book rediscovers its potential by exploring new ideas for design through the power of the stitch. Written for the dedicated knitter, it goes into the fine detail of how knitting works, questioning and examining how stitches can influence and shape the fabric by pulling in, pulling up, and making it stretchy or firm, thick or thin. Over forty projects are included that range from simple, straightforward scarves and bags to more intricate jackets and organic sculptural 3D pieces. A dictionary of stitches compares each stitch with stocking stitch, and shows how the shape and feel of knitting can be changed dramatically. A chapter explores different ways of shaping fabric around the edges and even within the knitting, using increases, decreases and short-row shaping to texture the surface or to make three-dimensional forms. Step-by-step instructions are supported with explanations, charts, diagrams and photos. Techniques are discussed in depth to help understand different outcomes and how 'problems' can be used creatively. Detailed, innovative and inspiring, it is invaluable reading for all knitters and textile designers.

Crocheting flowers are perfect for using up your very small scraps of yarn. The flowers are small and portable projects that you can take with you on the go. Book SynopsisLearn how to create bright and colourful knits using the intarsia method of colour knitting. This clear and simple book is ideal for anyone who wants to learn the art of knitting with different coloured yarns. It guides you effortlessly through the process of choosing colours, preparing yarn bobbins and working out yarn quantities through to the basic intarsia techniques such as joining in new colours and working from charts. At the end of the book there is a mouth-watering collection of 11 gorgeous projects including a fox-themed cushion, an eye-catching chevron scarf and a show-stopping star blanket – all designed with the beginner in mind. Whether you prefer vibrant, multi-coloured knits or more muted tones, this easy-to-follow book will teach you all you need to know to create contemporary colourwork.Trade ReviewIf you've yet to try intarsia colourwork, this book offers all the tips and tricks you'll need to know to achieve neat results. The technical advice is clear and concise, and the 11 projects will help you practise your skills. These include fun cushions, including a fox design, a chevron scarf, a baby blanket sprinkled with stars, and a sweater for women decorated with two flamingo motifs, and sized to fit busts of 32-46in. * The Knitter (Issue 136) *This book is very easy to follow if this is your first time at Intarsia Knitting. Great projects with easy to follow instructions and charts to follow. Highly recommended as a beginner's book for this type of knitting. -- Jackie Lewis * Customer review *I am a seasoned knitter and have done Scandi patterns and similar, but only very limited experience with intarsia as I generally find it a bit confusing to work with several different threads. This book, however, makes it all very clear and easy to follow. It has a step by step guide to all the basics and gives great hints and tips. I also love it that the patterns are written in "full hand" as I originally learned to knit in Germany and - although I CAN do it - still find it somewhat difficult and tedious to follow patterns in English abbreviations. There is a nice collection of pattern charts included, anything from children's items to accessories and home decor. The patterns can be mixed and matched or used as a template for own patterns. All in all it is a very enjoyable and inspiring book and I am already halfway through my first project! -- Petra Beck * Customer review *I have been knitting for a while but am fairly new to intarsia. This book gives a good explanation of how to do it correctly with good tips (before I never really knew what to do with the yarn at the back when I picked up another colour as part of the pattern). I particularly love the flamingo jumper and the fox cushion cover in this book but intend to use the alphabet to make a baby blanket. I would recommend this book to beginners as well as more experienced knitters. -- Vicky Vincent * Customer review *This book is very easy to follow if this is your first time at Intarsia Knitting. Great projects with easy to follow instructions and charts to follow. Highly recommended as a beginner's book for this type of knitting. -- Linda Truswell * Customer review *Brilliant book, great for beginners, loved all the projects and can’t wait to start on one. -- Kitt Harris * Customer review *A very straightforward book with lots of illustration, ideas, and helpful information and tips. Some interesting patterns and lots to inspire a beginner at intarsia to have a go. I can see that some of the techniques used in the book would be transferable to my knitting machine too, although the book has no claim to be for machine knitters. The scarf is at the top of my list and the flamingos are a must too! -- Jenny Pritchard * Customer review *I am an experienced knitter and have knitted intarsia garments over the years - but have done so on instinct - with no guidance. This book is invaluable - covering any questions which may arise in a clear and concise way. The patterns are lovely and the charts clear and easy to understand. My only complaint is that this book wasn't published years ago! -- Diana Allen * Customer review *A great introduction to intarsia knitting. Simple step-by-step instructions and some lovely patterns. Search Press Ltd The Knitter’s Stitch Collection: A Creative Guide
Book SynopsisThis is a creative guide to the 300 knitting stitches you really need to know, including contemporary stitches and timeless classics. An invaluable resource of original stitch patterns, this collection is suitable for newcomers, designers and knitters of all abilities. Instead of being merely a round-up of familiar stitches, this is a visual feast of new material put together by expert author-designers Lesley Stanfield and Melody Griffiths, with a wide experience of hand knitting. It is a must-have addition to existing reference books on the subject. The stitches are organized into knit and purl, textures and ribs, twist stitches, cables, lace, bobbles and bells, colour and intarsia designs, and unusual techniques including rarities like entrelac, double-sided fabric and mosaic effects. Clear and simple charts are provided with each pattern throughout the book. This is a reissue of the previously published book.Trade ReviewThis is a creative guide to the 300 knitting stitches and timeless classics for newcomers, designers and knitters of all abilities. It's a feast of new material and a must-have addition to existing reference books on the subject. * Machine Knitting Monthly *Stanfield's classic receives a facelift in The Knitter's Stitch Collection. Originally called The Essential Stitch Collection for Knitters, the fundamental framework of the book is relatively unchanged. Divided into eight categories, from knit and purl to letters and numbers, every section first displays all the stitches in color swatches (called the stitch selector), then singles out the stitch, featuring a bit of description along with charts and, usually, written directions. Dominated by cable and lace variations, the stitch names are fairly evocative: Celtic knot, kilim star, polka dot, allium. Symbols run as a bottom-of-the-page banner and are more thoroughly explained in the last chapter along with inserts on using the stitches, a gallery of ideas, instructions on essential techniques, and abbreviations and symbols. Still a vital reference for any category of knitter. -- Barbara Jacobs * Booklist *This book has something for every knitter from the starter wishing to develop their skills to the more advanced who would like greater challenges. I like the way that the ideas are graded and the fact that the book does not focus on one technique. A book like this is akin to a recipe book where you will delve in and out for inspiration. The book would be great for creating the knitter’s first designs whether it be a scarf or a blanket using different stitches for squares. All instructions are clear and different methods are explained fully. The diagrams and charts are a good size so that the user can easily see the finished results and follow the graphics. If one prefers written instructions one would need to use an alternative book. I would have no hesitation in recommending this book. * Monica Russel, author of Nordic Knits for Children *It is difficult to find much to say about a stitch dictionary: if you know the Harmony Guides you will be familiar with many of these stitches. However, the authors have also added new, more complex cables and some unusual stitches. Something that I have not seen before is a chapter on knitting letters in a eyelet stitches, which might be useful to incorporate into a gift for someone. * Slipknot *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6, About this book 8, The Stitch Collection 10, Knit and purl 12, Twists 26, Cables 48, Lace 80, Bobbles and leaves 104, Stranded and intarsia 130, Unusual stitches 152, Letters/Numbers 168, Knit Know-how 184, Using the stitches 186, Gallery of ideas 192, Essential techniques 194, Reading the charts 200, Abbreviations and symbols 204, Index 206

A great assortment of easy to make patterns, love the fact that the body and legs are knitted in one. Each project uses small amounts of yarn, so great for using up odd balls. Didn't have any fleecy dk, so just used normal dk, pets looked just as cute. Particularly like the Penguin, currently making the Robin, never too early to start for Christmas. Not so keen on the bunny, but that's probably my fault, mine looks more like a lamb, but is still cute! Cats, Chicks, Fox, and a fabulous Otter are just some of the creations designed by the brilliant Sachiyo Ishii. The amount of information that comes with the book is amazing and ensures that any knitter, no matter what your ability will be able to make any project from this book. I loved them all, although being a cat fan that had to be my first project. The designs are small, standing just 6in tall, depending on the pet, and the best thing is, that you can use your scrap stash to make them. They all use just a small amount of yarn. With full instructions and a complete abbreviation guide, Pocket Pets is set out perfectly. There are descriptions for adding beads, embroidery ideas and more than a few techniques to get the best from your knitting. This is a wonderful book. I absolutely adored it. -- Tracy Shephard * Postcard Reviews *This lovely book will be very useful for making small gifts and items for sales tables. I look forward to trying these designs with primary school children who I have been teaching to knit on a voluntary basis since 2011. I may need to adapt the wool because I suspect the fleece yarn might be difficult for the children to need. I intend to try out the designs ASAP. -- Jacqui Dove * Customer review *This book is great for knitters who like making small pets. -- Pauline Pritchard * Customer review *The '20 to' series are great value for money and I have knitted patterns from this designer before so I had high hopes for this book. I wasn't disappointed, all the designs are lovely and only use small amounts of yarn. I had some white fleecy yarn left from a previous project so I had a go at making a mouse. The pattern was really easy to follow and my son is very pleased with his new pocket pet. I think knitters of all abilities will enjoy this book, although complete beginners might want to practice with the fleecy yarn first as it can be a little trickier to see the stitches. -- Nicola Urmenyi * Customer review *Priced at £4.99, 20 To Knit: Pocket Pets features a range of patterns for quick and easy fleece yarn makes. I've always found flowers a bit fiddly and I've usually given up pretty quickly whenever I've tried to make any before. I persevered with these as the instructions were nice and clear and I'm happy with the results. I still really want to make the hydrangeas but I haven't found the spheres for the centre yet. It also has the instructions at the back of the book to make a wreath cover which would be a great project.
