  • Emile or On Education

Penguin Books Ltd Emile or On Education

Book SynopsisJEAN-JACQUES ROUSSEAU was born in Geneva in 1712. His remarkable novel La nouvelle Héloise (1761), met with immediate and enormous success. In this and in Émile, which followed a year later, Rousseau invoked the inviolability of personal ideals against the power of the state and the pressures of society. The crowning achievement of his political philosophy was The Social Contract, published in 1762. That same year he wrote an attack on revealed religion, the Profession de foi du vicaire savoyard. He was driven from Switzerland and fled to England where he only succeeded in making an enemy of Hume and returned to his continental peregrinations. In 1770 Rousseau completed his Confessions. His last years were spent largely in France where he died in 1778.

  • Understanding Research in Early Education

Taylor & Francis Ltd Understanding Research in Early Education

Book SynopsisIn this newly revised edition of Understanding Research in Early Education, Margaret Clark demonstrates the continuing relevance of research in the homes of young children and in preschool units. Through rigorous yet understandable language, the text stresses the importance of research, acknowledging how easy it can be, amidst the change and flood of documents on early education and care, to overlook the insights to be gained from past research. The author draws on her own studies, and those of others, to illustrate how to avoid common pitfalls, ask the right questions to inform students' research projects, and critically apply findings in the classroom or nursery. The book is one of the few texts for students to bring research alive, analysing key research to consider its limitations and the extent to which results are relevant to policy and practice. Without requiring any prior expertise in research and research methodologies, the third edition wTrade Review'This book not only helps students to review key early years studies past and present, but also helps them to think critically about how and why particular approaches are best suited to particular research. It is invaluable in helping students at all levels to become critical consumers and reflective contributors to early education research.' - Jane Payler, Professor, Open University.'Professor Clark continues to make a powerful contribution to our understanding of children`s learning. Her clear and rigorous exposition of research should influence policy as well as practice.' - Wendy Scott OBE, President, TACTYC.'The third edition of Professor Clark`s book highlights the obstacles to attempts to reconcile links among policy, research and practice, and raises some uncomfortable questions about the processes of dissemination, application and implementation of research findings.' - Carol Aubrey, Emeritus Professor, Warwick University. 'This new edition will be warmly welcomed by those interested in early years research. Professor Clark`s ability to articulate clearly the lessons to be learnt from research makes this book an ideal resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students.' - Louise Wormwell, Senior Lecturer, Primary and Early Years Education, Newman University.'Professor Clark has written an enabling and empowering book, of use to all practitioners who work with children. She highlights a range of approaches critical to our understanding of how research findings are reached and their potential strengths and limits in the development of policy and practice.' - Dr Morag M MacNeil, Previous joint lead evaluator within the Getting it Right for Every Child Development Team. 'In this informative and engaging book Professor Clark draws attention to relevant and important aspects of carrying out research in early childhood. As a student supervised by her for my own doctoral research I was fortunate to have benefitted from her rigorous and systematic approach to the challenges faced by student researchers.' - Dr Lone Hattingh, Senior Lecturer, Bath Spa University.Table of ContentsAbout the author Acknowledgments Preface 1. A companion work to Kay's Not Light, But Fire, this book focuses on the unique and powerful role discussions about race can play in the elementary classroom.Drawing its title inspiration from the lyrics of the freedom song "Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around," sung by hundreds of children marching against segregation in what came to be known as the Children's Crusade of 1963, We're Gonna Keep On Talking is written for teachers who are willing to match children's courage and brilliance, and who believe that "a foundation in meaningful race discourse will help [children] to seek justice for themselves and their neighbors, to be kinder, [and] more thoughtful."Writing with the humility and honest storytelling of two career classroom teachers, Matthew Kay and Jennifer Orr share: Strategies for building safe and supportive classroom and school spaces for productive discourse Dozens of practical teacher moves for facilitating race conversations Classroom stories that allow readers to envision ways into the work through picture books, art, graphs, historical photographs, and current events Tips for aligning the work of race conversations to your grade-level standards Whether you are unsure of where to begin or looking to deepen your practice, We're Gonna Keep On Talking will be your guide to the important work of race conversations in the elementary classroom.Trade Review"More than ever, we need educators brave enough to engage students in conversations that will help them expand their perspectives and worldviews. This book is a guide to support how we prepare our students at the youngest ages to lovingly negotiate race in the classroom.” —Lynsey Burkins, elementary educator“With We're Gonna Keep on Talking, Matthew Kay and Jennifer Orr equip elementary teachers with something we've been in search of for a long time: the tools and know-how to engage our young students in meaningful conversations about race in our classrooms. This is a book I will turn to again and again to inform my practice. More importantly, it will give all of us the opportunity to grapple with the type of thinking and discussions that will ultimately lead us all, students and teachers alike, to co-create a more just world. Thank you, Matt and Jennifer!” —Christina Nosek, co-author of To Know and Nurture a Reader “Jennifer and Matthew show us what is possible when educators listen to children, are brave, and actively engage in the difficult conversations that our youngest children are already having about race, identity and social issues. It is our responsibility as educators to have meaningful race conversations with our youngest learners and guide them into these difficult conversations, not as isolated lessons, but as a way of being and living in our classroom communities. We're Gonna Keep on Talking shows us how we can trust the children and ourselves to have race conversations, why they are so critical, and is full of honest and relatable stories about having these conversations in our classrooms. This book has a sense of urgency running through it and will support you as you go into your classroom and "keep on talking" with your children. We cannot step back from these conversations as there is not a minute to waste. Book SynopsisCamping in the garden, riding bikes through the woods, climbing trees, collecting bugs, picking wildflowers, running through piles of autumn leaves... These are the things childhood memories are made of. But for a whole generation of today's children the pleasures of a free-range childhood are missing, and their indoor habits contribute to epidemic obesity, attention-deficit disorder, isolation and childhood depression. This timely book shows how our children have become increasingly alienated and distanced from nature, why this matters and how we can make a difference. Last Child in the Woods is a clarion call, brilliantly written, compelling and irresistibly persuasive - a book that will change minds and lives.Trade Review"'This is a hugely important book that should be read by every parent, teacher and politician... What Louv certainly persuades of is that in nature a child finds freedom... and genuine creativity...' Book SynopsisThis volume traces the history of Western philosophy of education in Antiquity. Between the fifth century BCE and the fifth century CE, Plato, Isocrates, Aristotle, Cicero, Augustine, and others raised questions about the nature of teaching and learning, the relationship of education and politics, and the elements of a distinctively philosophical education. Their arguments on these topics launched a conversation that occupied philosophers over the millennia and continues today.About A History of Western Philosophy of Education:An essential resource for researchers, scholars, and students of education, this five-volume set that traces the development of philosophy of education through Western culture and history. Focusing on philosophers who have theorized education and its implementation, the series constitutes a fresh, dynamic, and developing view of educational philosophy. It expands our educational possibilities by reinvigorating philosophy's vibrant critical tradition, conneTrade Review[About the series] Not since Robert Ulich's groundbreaking A Thousand Years of Educational Wisdom has there been such a comprehensive examination of the history of western educational thought. Given that Ulich's work was published almost eighty years ago, there is an obvious need for an update. This series more than fills the bill by adding important topics such as feminism, racism, pluralism, and critical theory. The series goes a long way in bringing the history of Western educational thought up to date. Book SynopsisThere are few subjects these days that cause parents more stress than their children''s education. In his new book, Peter Hitchens describes the misjudgements made by politicians over the years that have led to the increase of class distinction and privilege in our education system. This is of course the opposite of what was intended, especially by former Minister of Education Shirley Williams and Margaret Thatcher, her successor in that role, who closed down many more Grammar Schools than Williams. Given that the cost of private secondary education is now in the region of 50,000 a year and the best comprehensive schools are now oversubscribed, parents are spending thousands on private tutoring and fee-paying prep schools in order to get their children into these academically excellent schools. Book SynopsisWhy are our educational institutions and practices such a poor fit for so many students?A Prison Called Schooladdresses the complex issues that place many students at a disadvantage as they try to survive yet another hurdle in lifeschool. Although some students are able to navigate and succeed in the current system, other students struggle to survive a system that is unable to meet their needs. For those students, school can feel like a twelve-year prison sentence.Students who cannot fit the outdated, one-size-fits-all model, are further penalized by a system that blames the struggling student rather than holding the institution accountable. For students to thrive in school, the system, not the students, must change in deep and substantial ways.A Prison Called Schoolis a powerful catalyst for creating the empowering, engaging, and effective learning environments that all students need to succeed in school and life.Trade ReviewMetzger builds this study on multiple sources: interviews with high school students (from her doctoral research and earlier); observations of young adults struggling in schools; literature reviews; and personal experiences in education—as a teacher, psychologist, and youth advocate. Her aim is to raise the visibility of high school students by describing their experiences; pose questions about school effectiveness; suggest changes in schooling; and emphasize the need to value, empower, and engage young adults in educational settings. The four chapters in part 1 describe the struggles, challenges, and attributes of high school students; the six chapters in part 2 discuss the elements, features, and requirements for transforming (versus reforming) schools. Metzger chastises schools—specifically, staff and teachers—for creating and maintaining high school environments and curricula that are sterile, disengaging, marginalizing, outdated, oppressive, disconnected, standardized, impersonal, passive, and devaluing. Metzger suggests that though one can find research and literature that provide the bases to transform schools, the educational system continues to exist for itself and for the adults responsible for educating young adults. In fact, schools ought to exist for the students—for supporting, empowering, engaging, respecting, and trusting them and for fostering inquiry and partnerships using strategies leading to ‘succeeders,’ i.e., skilled graduates with dispositions to be active, participatory citizens. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All readers. * CHOICE *Maure Ann Metzger presents a compelling narrative of the many difficulties encountered in schools by disadvantaged students. Especially effective is her analysis of how poverty affects a student’s ability 'to navigate the system' and find success in school. The use of extensive student anecdotal data provides strong support for her characterization of schools as prisons.... [T]he book is a brilliant and valuable presentation of why disadvantaged students feel imprisoned in school. * School Administrator *Despite 100 plus years of continuous "reform", teenagers still experience high school as something akin to "reform school". Especially the least advantaged. Metzger puts it all together with both eloquence and force. She has the anecdotal detail, empathy for all the actors, and ideas and examples for how it could be different. We'll repeat the same-old reform cycle again unless we pay attention to what's really happened in the past and happens daily in the schools we have at present. Thanks Maure Ann Metzger for this sympathetic, hard-hitting and well-documented account. -- Deborah Meier, McArthur Fellowship recipient, Steinhardt School of Education, New York University, author "In Schools We Trust: Creating Communities of Learning in an Era of Testing and Standardization"A Prison Called School provides a comprehensive roadmap for school transformation for all students including the complex and frequently unmet needs of the most disempowered, disadvantaged and at-risk learners. Dr. Metzger identifies a variety of critical and empirically supported components of effective educational reform that are currently missing in many of the current school reform movements. Specifically, A Prison Called Schools expertly and passionately articulates the vitally important but frequently overlooked need for student empowerment and engagement in creating effective schools for all. Dr. Metzger weaves the powerfully true stories of disempowered and underserved students with her extensive experience in schools and comprehensive research-based paradigm for school transformation that will profoundly impact schools, educators and students. -- Doug Anderson, PhD, LP, consultant, keynote speaker, professional coach and founder of Solutions and Strengths, LLCI am impressed with A Prison Called School as the author identifies the key causes of problems with our schools today. I know of no other book about schooling so readable, grounded in research and practice, and thoroughly documented. It also suggests directions for a better system. An absolute must read for educators and the public. -- Wayne B. Jennings, PhD, director, International Association for Learning AlternativesA Prison Called School is a must read book for anyone interested in wanting to make school a safe non-corporate inclusive space for all students and end the school to prison pipeline. -- Anthony J. Nocella II, Fort Lewis CollegeA Prison Called School is a dynamic and vigorous examination of America’s oppressive school system. Dr. Metzger, based on her extensive experience within the educational system in a variety of roles, her research examining student leadership, as well as her comprehensive examination of current research in the field of school reform, exhibits a courageous and comprehensive strategy in challenging the status quo of our country’s educational system. The strength in the book, however, rests not only with Dr. Metzger’s expertise and writing skill, but with the voices of students; voices that are often either ignored or not solicited in mainstream education. These students’ voices reflect their pain, confusion, and inherent recognition of the need for school change, not the least of which is for their humanity to be respected, and their need for learning, development, and engagement in becoming productive citizens of the world. Dr. Metzger outlines a holistic strategy to ensure that students are the hub and the catalyst to transform schools. -- Susan Strauss, RN, EdD, harassment and bullying consultant, author "Sexual Harassment and Bullying: A Guide to Keeping Kids Safe and Holding Schools Accountable"Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Introduction Part One 1 Life on the Inside 2 From Idealism to Institutionalism 3 The Prisoners 4 Disempowered to Disengaged Part Two 5 New Form, Not Reform 6 Valuing Our Youth, Valuing Our Future 7 The Power of Empowerment 8 Real Learning for Real Life 9 Engaged for Learning 10 Partnerships that Transform Conclusion Notes Bibliography Resources

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisAcross the world, universities are more numerous than they have ever been, yet at the same time there is unprecedented confusion about their purpose and scepticism about their value. What Are Universities For? offers a spirited and compelling argument for completely rethinking the way we see our universities, and why we need them. Stefan Collini challenges the common claim that universities need to show that they help to make money in order to justify getting more money. Instead, he argues that we must reflect on the different types of institution and the distinctive roles they play. In particular we must recognize that attempting to extend human understanding, which is at the heart of disciplined intellectual enquiry, can never be wholly harnessed to immediate social purposes - particularly in the case of the humanities, which both attract and puzzle many people and are therefore the most difficult subjects to justify. At a time when the future of higher education lies in the balance, What Are Universities For? offers all of us a better, deeper and more enlightened understanding of why universities matter, to everyone.Trade ReviewAn eloquent and impassioned book * Economist *Collini is astute, analytical, and often killingly funny -- Bevis Hillier * Daily Telegraph *Collini is that rare bird, a don who can be read with pleasure -- Michael Barber * Tablet, Books of the Year *One of Britain's finest essayists and writers -- Ronan McDonald * The Times Higher Education Supplement *[A] timely lecture for the coalition of dunces ... this is a closely argued defence * Independent on Sunday *The book is a bit like some university courses. It is erudite, well argued, carefully researched, a fine addition to the debate about the purpose of university education * Scotsman *[Collini is] stern and splendid in his brief history of the hot debate on useful versus useless knowledge -- Fred Inglis * Times Higher Education *It is extremely well written: Collini's prose is lively, well-reasoned and persuasive. The book is a refreshing example of a faculty member engaging with the wider issues of higher education rather than perceiving them through the narrow prism of his own discipline ... a valuable, timely contribution to the discourse -- Gerry Wrixon * Irish Examiner *A critique both pointed and witty -- Howard Newby * Independent *Collini writes beautifully -- Chris Patten * Financial Times *Collini puts his finger on the nub of the problem facing universities. • The Rise of Neoliberal Philosophy: Human Capital,

Lexington Books The Rise of Neoliberal Philosophy: Human Capital,

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisIn The Rise of Neoliberal Philosophy: Human Capital, Profitable Knowledge, and the Love of Wisdom, Brandon Absher argues that the neoliberal transformation of higher education has resulted in a paradigm shift in philosophy in the United States, leading to the rise of neoliberal philosophy. Neoliberal philosophy seeks to attract investment by demonstrating that it can produce optimal return. Further, philosophers in the neoliberal paradigm internalize and reproduce the values of the prevailing social order in their work, reorienting philosophical desire toward the production of attractive commodities. The aim of philosophy in the neoliberal university, Absher shows, has become the production of human capital and profitable knowledge.Trade Review"This is an important book that should be part of a national conversation at APA conferences and in all philosophy departments. Professional philosophers ought to ask ourselves what kind of philosophy we support and when (not if) will marginalized, especially BIPOC faculty, move to the center to reconceptualize the discipline from below. As someone who hosts a large philosophy for children’s project at various educational sites, including a forest school for unschooled children, I was pleased to learn that such an initiative is validated as 'two-dimensional' philosophizing. In fact, as Brandon Absher argues, the neoliberal university tolerates only one-kind: one-dimensional philosophy that performs its performativity for optimization of ROIs, which, of course, is nothing short of sophistry in our late capitalist era. With a stirring call for action, he deftly critiques the monochromatic content and demographics of most philosophy departments and implores us to engage in a pedagogy of discontent." -- Mechthild Nagel, SUNY Cortland"Brandon Absher offers an important and timely update to John McCumber’s argument that American philosophy sold itself out to the political needs of Cold War America, except now it has succumbed to profit hungry neoliberalism. The author shows how this has fundamentally altered and adulterated what it is to do philosophy, further shifting it away from love and wisdom towards profitable knowledge." -- Justin Pack, CSU Stanislaus"Drawing upon thinkers such as Hebert Marcuse, Wendy Brown, and Jean-François Lyotard , The Rise of Neoliberal Philosophy diagnoses the many ills that have befallen philosophy in the contemporary market-driven university while proposing a radical cure. Returning to the roots of philosophy in the figure of Socrates, Absher argues that philosophy must work together with the oppressed masses that neoliberalism forgot in order to show how another world is possible." -- Corey McCall, Cornell Prison Education Program"Brandon Absher offers a thoughtful treatment of the effects of neoliberalism on the discipline of philosophy. While many in the humanities attempt to make the case for their discipline’s value to neoliberalism, Absher challenges us to chart a new path. After analyzing the transition from Cold War Philosophy to Neoliberal Philosophy, he imagines new possibilities for the practice of philosophy that are more capacious, inclusive of diverse publics, and liberatory. The Rise of Neoliberal Philosophy will be of interest to those outside the field of philosophy, as well, as Absher presents a helpful framework for understanding many of the troubling changes within higher education over the past century." -- Sarah Vitale, Ball State University"Absher rightly argues that neoliberal university has become 'one-dimensional' in adjusting us all to 'the prevailing social order.' We know that our social order has hurled us into global warming and that to stay our course is a 'suicide pact.' We need new philosophies and new theories of the university. A future is only possible if we become different, which begins with thinking differently." -- Tanya Loughead, Canisius CollegeTable of ContentsAcknowledgmentsIntroductionChapter 1: Philosophy in the Neoliberal UniversityChapter 2: The Performativity of Neoliberal PhilosophyChapter 3: The One-Dimensionality of Neoliberal PhilosophyChapter 4: Diversity and Neoliberal PhilosophyChapter 5: Toward an Alternative ParadigmConclusionBibliography

Harvard Educational Publishing Group Why Knowledge Matters: Rescuing Our Children from

Book SynopsisIn Why Knowledge Matters, influential scholar E. D. Hirsch, Jr., addresses critical issues in contemporary education reform and shows how cherished truisms about education and child development have led to unintended and negative consequences.Hirsch, author of The Knowledge Deficit, draws on recent findings in neuroscience and data from France to provide new evidence for the argument that a carefully planned, knowledge-based elementary curriculum is essential to providing the foundations for children's life success and ensuring equal opportunity for students of all backgrounds. In the absence of a clear, common curriculum, Hirsch contends that tests are reduced to measuring skills rather than content, and that students from disadvantaged backgrounds cannot develop the knowledge base to support high achievement. Hirsch advocates for updated policies based on a set of ideas that are consistent with current cognitive science, developmental psychology, and social science. The book focuses on six persistent problems of recent US education: the over-testing of students; the scapegoating of teachers; the fadeout of preschool gains; the narrowing of the curriculum; the continued achievement gap between demographic groups; and the reliance on standards that are not linked to a rigorous curriculum. Hirsch examines evidence from the United States and other nations that a coherent, knowledge-based approach to schooling has improved both achievement and equity wherever it has been instituted, supporting the argument that the most significant education reform and force for equality of opportunity and greater social cohesion is the reform of fundamental educational ideas. Why Knowledge Matters introduces a new generation of American educators to Hirsch's astute and passionate analysis.

At last, this publication from Ross Morrison McGill fits the bill. He has put everything he has learned on his own learning journey into a beginners guide for teachers. * Dyslexia Review *An exceptional effort of presenting the vast and difficult topic of 'the learning brain' in a practical and understandable way. -- Yves Moerskofski * Educational psychologist *We are constrained by our memory skills, especially for students sitting in a class bombarded by facts pressured by an upcoming test, struggling to find relations between ideas and building coat hangers to remember the details, and surrounded by others who seem to find it easy to recall what the teacher said. This book is Masterful, Evidence-based, Memorable, Operational, Readable, and the best book for You on memory. -- Professor John Hattie * Melbourne Graduate School of Education *This book is informative and accessible for quick reads. The consistent approach to each chapter works really well, especially for utilising the practical applications. The embedded use of diagrams adds to the reader's understanding of some complex concepts. -- Charlotte McLean * SENCO and Senior Leader *An impressive collection of findings that draws on the latest research within cognitive science and education. Ross succinctly discusses, clarifies and offers practical, research-informed examples for busy leaders and teachers. -- Mark Leswell * Research lead *The ‘human teacher first’ meets the science. A great book to begin understanding the science of learning and the complexity of influences on this. -- Sarah Benskin * Assistant Principal (T & L, Curriculum and CPD), Nottingham @drblearning *Being research-informed is one thing; having time to do it is another. Solve both issues by reading and acting upon this excellent introductory guide to the theory and practice of memory. Highly recommended. -- Dr Paul S. Ganderton * Education consultant, @ecogeog *Ross McGill has managed to beautifully execute and simply explain the fundamentals of cognitive learning and the importance of understanding the “how” in the context of the brain, complete with wonderful illustrations perfect for the classroom teacher, learner and parent. So no matter who you are, no matter how successful, no matter how much you already may understand about this topic, Ross has something to offer you. -- Victoria dos Santos * Assistant athletic director and pastoral lead *This book covers all the key points in understanding how human memory forms and functions according to models of memory and neuroscience through a historical and contemporary approach that can enable educators to adapt their teaching in light of evidence. Some key points have been made about emotion and stress, which affect learning and memory, and being aware of these can facilitate effective teaching methods in the current climate – as it requires students to become active learners and be able to actively retrieve memories. This is crucial for today’s heavy content-based exams and curriculum. -- Shafina Vohra * Psychology teacher, @ShafinaVohra *A guide to memory highlights the importance of understanding how our students learn. The worked examples and the templates will help teachers bring these ideas into the classrooms of all settings! -- Ryan Curran * Vice principal Delta Independent School *The book is excellent and gripping and thoroughly fascinating. The theory sections are very well written and work well as a quick read as well as being very well suited to a slower careful read. The practical sections are remarkably clear and helpful. I defy anyone to read this and not be forced to stop and reflect, and as a result their lessons can't fail to be improved. This is the first book I've read for a long time that has really grabbed me and forced me to reflect and to be challenged. I cannot recommend it strongly enough. -- Peter Hall, Assistant Headteacher * @maths_ast *

Book SynopsisMaking Sense of Mass Educationprovides a contemporary analysis of the ideas and issues that have traditionally dominated education research, challenging outdated preconceptions with fundamental theory and discussion. It takes a demythologising approach in assessing these issues and their relevance to schooling and education in Australia. This text examines the cultural context of education and the influence of external media and new technologies, and highlights the many forms of discrimination in education, including social class, race and gender. It looks at alternative approaches to education, including the repercussions of gathering data to measure school performance, and considers the intersection of ethics and philosophy in classroom teaching. The fourth edition expands on these issues with three new chapters: on sexuality, children''s rights, and neoliberalism and the marketisation of education. Each chapter challenges and breaks down common myths surrounding these topics, encouraging pre-service teachers to think critically and reflect on their own beliefs.

Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was an Italian physician, reform educator, and philosopher whose ideas and work have remained influential throughout the world ever since the 1910s. Her educational concept covers entire development from infancy to young adulthood. It is based on the image of the child as a “builder of his or her self” and therefore uses for the first time the form of open teaching and free work in a prepared learning environment. Montessori schools became trend-setting educational institutions early on, and their concept strongly reflects in their architecture and equipment. Montessori Architecture is the first book that comprehensively addresses architectural design, construction, the use of materials in and the furnishing of educational spaces according to Montessori’s ideas. The book’s first part explores spatial and design principles that make up good kindergarten and school buildings. In the second part, nine case studies are featured in detail through photographs, plans, and concise texts. These examples are located in Europe (Netherlands, Belgium, Great Britain) as well as in tropical countries (Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Sir Lanka). Thus, this highly illustrative volume offers practical advice and a wealth of information that is of utmost importance for the design of school buildings in general.

Book SynopsisWith the publication of Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Paulo Freire established himself as one of the most important and radical educational thinkers of his time. In Pedagogy of Hope, Freire revisits the themes of his masterpiece, the real world contexts that inspired them and their impact in that very world. Freire's abiding concern for social justice and education in the developing world remains as timely and as inspiring as ever, and is shaped by both his rigorous intellect and his boundless compassion. Pedagogy of Hope is a testimonial to the inner vitality of generations denied prosperity and to the often-silent, generous strength of millions throughout the world who refuse to let hope be extinguished. This edition includes a substantial new introduction by Henry A. Giroux, University Chair for Scholarship in the Public Interest and the Paulo Freire Distinguished Scholar in Critical Pedagogy at McMaster University, Canada.Translated by Robert R. Barr.Trade ReviewPaulo Freire’s Pedagogy of Hope, first published in 1992, was written “in rage and love”, passionate in its denunciation of social wrongs and in its assertion of the power of education to release the truth. The book works at both inspirational and practical levels, Freire believing that hope must be secured in practice, in action. In his own life, Freire embodied this integration of love and need for securing social change. His thinking and commitment to the best in humanity informed his engagement in the world. Pedagogy of Hope illuminates Freire’s earlier publications including Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1968) which with sales of over one million copies has had extraordinary impact throughout the world in its analysis of socially and personally transformative education. * Lincoln Green in LeftCentral *I would recommend Pedagogy of Hope: Reliving Pedagogy of the Oppressed for everyone who, like myself, believes we can achieve a socially just future built collectively. * Educational Review *Table of ContentsIntroduction, Henry A. Book SynopsisChange your child''s future starting today: Learn how to use Stephen R. Covey''s proven 7 Habits to create a leadership program for kids of all ages so they can be more effective, more goal oriented, and more successful. In today''s world, we are inundated with information about who to be, what to do, and how to live. But what if there was a way to learn not just what to think about, but how to think? A program that taught how to manage priorities, focus on goals, and be a positive influence? The Leader in Me is that program. In this bestseller, Stephen R. Covey took the 7 Habits that have already changed the lives of millions of readers and showed how even young children can use them as they develop. These habits-be proactive, begin with the end in mind, put first things first, think win-win, seek to understand and then to be understood, synergize, and sharpen the saw-are being adapted by schools around the country in leadership programs, most famously at the A.B Combs Elementary school in Raleigh. Not only does it work, but it works better than anyone could have imaged. This book is full of examples of how the students blossom under the program: the classroom that decided to form a support group for one of their classmates who had behavioural problems; the fourth grader who found a way to overcome his fear of public speaking and wound up taking his class to see him compete in a national story telling competitive, or the seven-year-old who told her father than they needed to go outside and play because they both needed to ''sharpen the saw''. Perfect for individuals and corporations alike, The Leader in Me shows how easy it is to incorporate these skills into daily life. It is atimely answer to many of the challenges facing today''s young people, businesses, parents, and educators-one that is perfectly matched tothe growing demands of our certain future.
