Book Synopsis'A striking memoir...A must-read for anyone healing from complex trauma' Jeanette McCurdy, bestselling author of I'm Glad My Mom DiedEvery cell in my body is filled with the code of generations of trauma, of death, of birth, of migration, of history that I cannot understand. . . . I want to have words for what my bones know. By the age of thirty, Stephanie Foo was successful on paper: she had her dream job as an award-winning radio producer at This American Life and a loving boyfriend. But behind her office door, she was having panic attacks and sobbing at her desk every morning. After years of questioning what was wrong with herself, she was diagnosed with complex PTSD - a condition that occurs when trauma happens continuously, over the course of years. Both of Foo's parents abandoned her when she was a teenager, after years of physical and verbal abuse and neglect. She thought she'd moved on, but her new diagnosis illuminated the way her past continued to threaten her health, relationships, and career. She found limited resources to help her, so Foo set out to heal herself, and to map her experiences onto the scarce literature about C-PTSD. In this deeply personal and thoroughly researched account, Foo interviews scientists and psychologists and tries a variety of innovative therapies. She returns to her hometown in California to investigate the effects of immigrant trauma on the community, and she uncovers family secrets in the country of her birth, Malaysia, to learn how trauma can be inherited through generations. Ultimately, she discovers that you don't move on from trauma - but you can learn to move with it. Powerful, enlightening and hopeful, What My Bones Know is a brave narrative that reckons with the hold of the past over the present, the mind over the body - and examines one woman's ability to reclaim agency from her trauma.Trade ReviewA striking memoir...A must-read for anyone healing from complex trauma -- Jeanette McCurdy, bestselling author of I'M GLAD MY MOM DIEDAn intimate, deeply engrossing story of psychological recovery * The Australian *As Foo sheds necessary light on the little-discussed topic of C-PTSD, she holds out the hope that while 'healing is never final . . . along with the losses are the triumphs' that can positively transform a traumatized life. . . . A sharp, insightful and stirring memoir. * Kirkus Reviews *Foo's writing is shrewdly insightful. In telling her story so compellingly, she joins authors such as Anna Qu and Ly Tran in adding nuance to the 'model minority' myth, if not actively subverting it. . . . Highly recommended. -- Library Journal (starred review)This is a work of immense beauty. * Publishers Weekly *Many trauma survivors struggle to describe the seemingly indescribable sense of carrying something intangibly sharp - something there but not there - inside. But in What My Bones Know, Stephanie Foo details that and more. Her achingly exquisite memoir takes us on a journey through complex trauma, illuminating her path of self-discovery and providing real hope for those who long to heal. -- Lori Gottlieb, New York Times bestselling author of MAYBE YOU SHOULD TALK TO SOMEONEWhat My Bones Know is an absolute triumph. Foo's beautifully written memoir is a balm and a light for anyone afraid that their early traumas have permanently stunted their capacity for connection, love, and purpose. This book is a must-read for anyone hungry for hope. -- Christie Tate, New York Times bestselling author of GROUPStephanie Foo's incredible memoir speaks to so many things at once: the horrors of an abusive childhood, the enduring power of trauma, the messy science of the brain and the lifelong quest for meaning and healing. Funny and tragic, unflinchingly honest and relentlessly hopeful, What My Bones Know is a marvel of a book. -- Ed Yong, New York Times bestselling author of I CONTAIN MULTITUDESFoo's journalistic eye serves her generously through a hard-won examination of trauma and its aftermath. I cried while turning the pages; I knew that I was witnessing an astonishing literary endeavour. For others who live with C-PTSD, this is a crucial, life-changing book. -- Esmé Weijun Wang, New York Times bestselling author of THE COLLECTED SCHIZOPHRENIASAt turns funny and devastating, terrifying and transcendent, Foo's quest for understanding should be relevant not just to someone with C-PTSD but to anyone seeking to grow and be present in this one life. -- Jenny Odell, New York Times bestselling author of HOW TO DO NOTHINGIn What My Bones Know, Stephanie Foo mines her past in search of answers, uncovering what it means to navigate trauma over generations. With striking candidness, Foo takes readers on her journey to understand her diagnosis of complex PTSD, weaving together reporting and personal history. A testament to Foo's determination, What My Bones Know is an act of reclamation - and a bold, defiant proclamation: "I am here." -- Kat Chow, author of SEEING GHOSTS

Guilford Publications Internal Family Systems Therapy for Shame and

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisRich in clinical examples, this book offers a fresh perspective on the roles of shame and guilt in psychological distress and presents a step-by-step framework for treatment. Martha Sweezy explains how the principles of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy are ideally suited to helping trauma survivors and other clients who struggle with debilitating shame to understand and heal psychic parts wounded in childhood. Annotated case illustrations show and explain IFS techniques in action. Other useful features include boxed therapeutic exercises, decision trees, and pointers to help therapists avoid or overcome common pitfalls. See also Internal Family Systems Therapy, Second Edition, by Richard C. Schwartz and Martha Sweezy, the authoritative presentation of IFS.Trade Review"Shame and guilt are integral to the experience of complex trauma and are among the effects most resistant to change. This volume is particularly pertinent for therapists who want to interrupt intergenerational cycles of trauma that are often fueled by shame and guilt. Whether or not the reader has a background in IFS, this book convincingly makes the case for the relevance and power of this approach. I am already finding it extremely useful in my practice with trauma survivors, and am excited to learn even more about this system of thought."--Pamela C. Alexander, PhD, private practice, Sherborn, Massachusetts "IFS is a compelling model that is capturing the imagination of therapists around the world, especially for the treatment of trauma. IFS is simple and elegant, but there is an art to its application. Sweezy is an artist who explains why and how she applies each brushstroke. With remarkable clarity and sophistication, the author untangles the inner dynamics of shame and guilt, and shows how to address a client's unmet needs compassionately in therapy. This book is generous and deep--no reader will be left untouched."--Christopher Germer, PhD, Co-Founder, Center for Mindful Self-Compassion "This landmark book takes a deep dive into a central topic for all psychotherapists--how to address the pernicious effects of shame and inappropriate guilt on a person's sense of self, psychological functioning, and interpersonal behavior. Sweezy applies IFS theory and practice in exquisite detail, with illuminating clinical vignettes. Her approach is novel and refreshingly nonpathologizing and compassionate. The book shows how to help clients come to view their harsh internal voices as their best attempts to protect the vulnerable core Self, and learn to forge a path of reconciliation among these parts and the Self. This is a complex, nuanced process requiring close attention and creativity on the part of the therapist, but Sweezy provides a clear map with which to traverse this emotionally fraught territory."--Peter Fraenkel, PhD, Department of Psychology, The City College of the City University of New York "This book is a welcome, inspiring guide for all therapists who have struggled with the limitations of pathologizing DSM-based approaches to psychotherapy, in which the therapist is expected to have 'the answers.' Based on her deep experience with IFS, Sweezy wisely focuses on symptom domains such as shame or guilt, rather than on specific disorders. The book reminds us that the answers reside within each individual, and gives powerful examples of how IFS allows individuals to discover their own paths to healing."--Michael Mithoefer, MD, Senior Medical Director for Medical Affairs, Training, and Supervision, MAPS Public Benefit Corporation-Table of ContentsForeword, Richard C. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Working with Traumatic Memories to Heal Adults

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat potential does psychotherapy have for mediating the impact of childhood developmental trauma on adult life?Combining knowledge from trauma-focused work, understandings of the developmental brain and the neurodynamics of psychotherapy, the authors explain how good care and poor care in childhood influence adulthood. They provide scientific background to deepen understanding of childhood developmental trauma. They introduce principles of therapeutic change and how and why mind-body and brain-based approaches are so effective in the treatment of developmental trauma. The book focuses in particular on Pesso Boyden System Psychotherapy (PBSP) which uniquely combines and integrates key processes of mind-body work that can facilitate positive change in adult survivors of childhood maltreatment. Through client stories Petra Winnette and Jonathan Baylin describe the clinical application of PBSP and the underlying neuropsychological concepts upon which it is based. Working with Traumatic Memories to Heal Adults with Unresolved Childhood Trauma has applications relevant to psychotherapists, psychologists and psychiatrists working with clients who have experienced trauma.Trade ReviewFor those interested in learning more about Pesso Boyden System Psychomotor Therapy (PBSP) and its use in the treatment of individuals who have experienced childhood trauma, Working with Traumatic Memories to Heal Adults with Unresolved Childhood Trauma by Petra Winnette and Jonathan Baylin was written for you. Winnette was a student of Albert Pesso and her description of the therapeutic content, interventions, and process of PBSP, along with four detailed case studies of this use of this treatment model, demonstrate clearly how and why this mind-body method of psychotherapy is widely considered to be very effective in treating unresolved trauma. Winnette also traces the roots of PBSP to attachment theory and research along with our developing knowledge of developmental trauma, while Baylin describes in an understandable and thorough manner a neurobiological understanding of why PBSP is likely to be effective treatment model for trauma resolution, new learning and integration. Along with learning the basics of PBSP, the reader is also likely to understand ways in which the PBSP therapeutic process and specific interventions are likely to positively contribute to the effectiveness of their current practice in providing treatment for traumatized adults. -- Daniel Hughes, Ph.D., Founder of Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy and President of DDPIThis is the book we have been waiting for! It is unique in integrating the neuroscience of early development, attachment theory and an intriguing therapeutic approach, Pesso Boyden System Psychomotor (PBSP). The theorectical perspective and insightful case studies of adults with unresolved childhood trauma may well change one's mind about the possibilities in psychotherapy. Shapiro has consistently promoted research to substantiate the efficacy of EMDR therapy and has also incorporated the feedback she has received from both clinicians and clients. EMDR is a sophisticated, highly integrative treatment that draws from a variety of theoretical orientations. It is experiential and client centered, with the goal of assisting clients to reprocess and heal from their dysfunctional storage of trauma-based material. This book should be in the libraries of all clinicians--it has changed the way trauma is treated and has broad applicability to myriad other mental health conditions."--Christine A. Courtois, PhD, ABPP, private practice (retired), Washington, DC; consultant and trainer, trauma psychology and treatment "An excellent resource on an important evidence-based treatment for traumatic stress. This book is relevant for all practitioners interested in EMDR therapy, including novices as well as those who already use the approach. The clinical aids, client transcripts, and fidelity scales will prove a boon to practitioners and researchers alike."--John C. Norcross, PhD, ABPP, Distinguished Professor of Psychology, University of Scranton "It's not easy to take a classic and improve on it, but that's what Shapiro has done in this third edition, with her usual combination of incisive writing, scientific rigor, and deep compassion for human suffering. The strength of EMDR's research base is now available in one easily accessible place, a testament to Shapiro's decades of insistence that no matter how clinically useful EMDR therapy might be, it needs to be supported by empirical data. The book clearly describes applications to the range of posttraumatic responses as well as other clinical problems. It is truly a gift for clinicians--and our clients."--Laura S. Brown, PhD, ABPP, past president, Division of Trauma Psychology, American Psychological Association; private practice, Seattle, Washington "The third edition expands on EMDR's proposed mechanisms of action and presents updated research beyond posttraumatic stress disorder, including applications for complex problems such as addictions and dissociative disorder. It is especially encouraging to see the link between trauma and addiction made clear, given the worldwide epidemic that addiction has become."--Susan Brown, LCSW, private practice, La Mesa, California -Table of Contents1. Here is a book that understands the darkness and offers an equally deep understanding of a system that can help us find balance, even when healing seems impossible. What I love most about this book, is that it is not written to "fix" you or your grief, but rather welcomes and understands that your loss will always be part of you. If you are struggling, you will want this book by your bedside, guiding you back into balance. Hebert's compassionate understanding is boundless, as is her wisdom of the ancient Tantric systems that can restore body, mind and spirit to equanimity after tragedy. If you are a healing professional, The Chakras in Grief and Trauma lays a foundation for a timeless approach to helping your clients return to a life where joy and gratitude can be fearlessly embraced alongside loss and grief. -- Amy Weintraub, Founder of LifeForce Yoga, author of Yoga Skills for Therapists and Yoga for DepressionThe Chakras in Grief and Trauma by Karla Helbert is an invaluable resource for those who are grieving or suffering trauma. By providing an introduction to the Chakra system, the book is accessible and relatable to anyone-from novice to master healer. I recently lost my father, and by applying a few of the practical techniques outlined within, I was able to not only acknowledge but lessen the anxiety and physical pain I felt as a result of my grief. For the bereaved, our world has changed, and with it, our energy, and our relationship to the world. This book offers multiple approaches to balancing the energy flowing through our bodies. It was extremely helpful. There are so many activities, no matter how you learn or process, there's something for everyone. The author knows of what she speaks. Her wisdom comes from personal experience and years of study. Her positive energy informs every page. -- Michele Young-Stone, author of O Magazine's Reading Room pick Lost in the Beehive and Above Us Only Sky.Grief is like a circle of energy. The circle, the chakraic shape of grief, is always moving, infinitely spiraling in one direction or another, or simply moving in its place, round and round. Karla Helbert has moved with this energy of catastrophic loss and has directed it beautifully into its fullest potential with this book. While we cannot stop the energy of grief from its movement, we can learn how to be with it and allow it to transform into a bigger kind of energy: the kind of energy with which we can cope, the kind of energy that is productive and meaningful rather than destruction and absent of meaning. With tenderness and compassion, Karla introduces the reader to ancient wisdom, colors, oils, and stones for example, that pushes back against a more modern, medicalized approach to grief. Cover to cover, this book honors the circular energy, the chakras, in grief and teaches us to muster the courage to stay with it as the motion transforms our very being into beauty that stands beside the pain. -- Dr. Joanne Cacciatore, PhD, author of Bearing the Unbearable: Love, Loss and the Heartbreaking Path of Grief, Founder of the MISS Foundation and the Selah Respite House and CarefarmAll those who have gone through grief and loss know that being expected to move on, as Karla writes, does not always work and might in fact be painful. It robs you from the space of fully being with your feelings and memories. In essence all you long for is to be yourself, and for the other to meet you with utter love and respect. There is no need for fixing, yet there is an inner longing of Being. The strongest message in this book is Karla's sharing of direct experience of feeling lost, how she stopped trying. This reveals the depth of the spiritual seeker, that one who is seeking to be inspired in finding freedom. This is the true meaning of all Vedic scriptures, to develop a relationship with your Inner Teacher and to let that guide you. The practical and sacred tools offered in this book, are open invitations. You get to choose which tool speaks to your heart and for that to guide you back to a state of serenity. I highly recommend this book for anyone experiencing loss, and walk your spiritual path, one step at a time. -- Chinnamasta Stiles, C-IAYT, NAMA-CAYT, PK, LMT, PCPN-AC, Founder at Shiva Shakti LokaA masterful blend of yogic wisdom, grief theory, and trauma-informed therapy, The Chakras in Grief and Trauma offers clear instructions on how to use the body's natural energy system to take back your power, restore balance, and rediscover your true self after the unthinkable has happened. Chapters by a diverse set of practicing psychotherapists and leading researchers aim to provide practitioners with a method that centers liberation of all dimensions of being through intersectional, client-centered, trauma-informed, and attachment-focused practices, alongside thoughtful attunement to the relational, somatic, imaginal, cultural, and transpersonal dimensions of healing.Integral Psychedelic Therapy will be essential reading for psychotherapists in practice and in training as well as those Trade Review"The wild and wooly field of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy is in need of expert guidance and this edited book offers a lot of it from a diverse group of experienced practitioners and researchers, who cover everything from the somatic to the spiritual and social activist sides of this important movement. I am honored that Bob Grant contributed a clear and practical chapter on integrating ketamine with my Internal Family Systems (IFS) approach. My personal and clinical experience with this combination has been amazing and Bob’s guidelines are extremely valuable. His personal journey is also inspiring." - Richard C. Schwartz, Ph.D. developer of the Internal Family Systems model and adjunct faculty, Harvard Medical School."Integral Psychedelic Therapy is a cutting-edge exploration of psychedelic-assisted therapy by some of the top therapists and researchers in the field, providing an abundance of essential insights that are foundational to this work. This is a core text for practitioners looking to develop their skills as well as anyone interested in psychedelic healing." - Rick Doblin, PhD, Founder & Executive Director, Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies"This is a multi-faceted gem of a book! Integral Psychedelic Therapy is practical, necessary reading for anyone looking to understand the psychedelic revolution underway in psychotherapy and psychiatry." - Julie Holland, MD "Psychedelics occasion a state of consciousness of immense therapeutic power and at the same time extraordinary vulnerability. Guidebooks are important, and this one, written by thoughtful and skillful practitioners, is a must-read for therapists who wish for these medicines to serve both personal healing and the greater good of society." - David E. Presti, University of California, Berkeley "Within this wondrously evolving field of psychedelic medicine, we are discovering that the therapeutic envelope is more important, and potentially more meaningful, than the molecule. This book provides an elegant compendium of innovations, and deepens our shared understanding of expanded states. For clinicians and explorers alike." - Brian Richards, Psy.D., Sunstone Therapies, The Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research"This timely collection, produced by clinicians and researchers at the forefront of the psychedelic movement, is a must-read for both newcomers and experts. It combines clinical inquiry and a humanistic approach, weaving in social justice and respect for Indigenous traditions. As regulation by the FDA, decriminalization, and mainstreaming advance globally, it’s urgent to cultivate a thoughtful understanding and culture around these powerful substances. This book goes beyond mere glorification, alarmist calls for "ethics" and "safety," or empty tokenization to dive deep into nuanced and complex discussions around psychedelic-assisted therapies." - Bia Labate, PhD, Executive Director, Chacruna Institute"The prevalence of mental health conditions and the speed at which psychedelics look set to be incorporated into mainstream medicine means there will need to be many more specially-trained therapists in the very near future. This will be a steep learning curve and we will need to carefully combine elements from conventional psychiatry with knowledge learned from Indigenous and underground practitioners. This book does just that - providing an excellent, multidisciplinary education covering the techniques used." - Amanda Feilding, Founder & Executive Director of the Beckley Foundation, Oxford, UK."This book is a treasure trove of ideas and practical tips, refreshingly and importantly foregrounded in acknowledgement of the debt owed to indigenous plant medicine using traditions, and the impact of colonization, patriarchy, white supremacy, and corporate greed on the trajectory of psychedelic healing traditions. The subsequent chapters offer many different types of gifts; particular key issues, such as consensual touch, are considered from different viewpoints, as well as so many other important topics for anyone working with these healing modalities. For those who feel familiar with the ‘basics’ of ‘prep-session-integration’, this book delves deeper into some of the complexities, mysteries, nuanced applications, and ethical questions. The chapter on ‘Decolonizing Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy’ by Danielle Herrera, MFT was a wake up call for me, and is, I feel, a must-read for our community." - Rosalind Watts, PhD Founder and co-director of Acer Integration"Integral Psychedelic Therapy brings needed attention and wisdom to a range of the most important aspects of working with psychedelics. At a time of rapid progress in clinical research, this book is a welcome reminder of the cultural context surrounding these medicines, including the history of psychedelics, the debt owed to indigenous wisdom and the tragic damage the "War on Drugs" has done to marginalized communities and to the advancement of health care and individual freedom. The more clinically oriented chapters remind us not to lose sight of the "core, human elements of the work" and the richness and depth of the human healing process. The authors draw on their own clinical experience to offer informed and insightful discussions of ethics and consent, therapeutic relationship, safe and mindful physical touch, music, the multiplicity of the psyche, numinous mystical experience, psychedelic group therapy and the immense importance of integration following psychedelic experiences. Case examples bring these discussions to life. This is a valuable resource for therapists and anyone else interested in psychedelics." - Michael Mithoefer, MD, Senior Medical Director for Medical Affairs, Training and Supervision, MAPS Public Benefit Corp. "This book arrives at a critical time in the evolution of psychedelic therapy as it articulates the challenges, mystery, and beauty of the psychedelic renaissance. The authors include diverse voices, each with their own sensitivities and refreshing perspectives, blending science, theory, ethics, and heart within broader societal forces. Being of service in partnership with compassion and ethical care are at the heart of each chapter. Book SynopsisSystematic assessment of dissociation is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of trauma survivors. The SCID-D is an interactive, semi-structured interview for assessing dissociative symptoms and disorders in adults and adolescents based on Dr. Steinberg's innovative Five Component Model of Dissociation Assessment (amnesia, depersonalization, derealization, identity confusion, and identity alteration). Over 30 years of worldwide research and clinical use have confirmed the reliability and validity of the SCID-D interview, and its universality across cultures. The interview has demonstrated a powerful ability to distinguish people with dissociative symptoms and disorders from those with other conditions, and it is widely regarded as the gold standard in the field. This edition of the SCID-D includes all the psychometrically validated interview questions of previous editions, preserving its excellent psychometric properties. The SCID-D is a valuable resource for clinicians and researchers assessing individuals suffering from complex posttraumatic and dissociative disorders. In the hands of a nonjudgmental empathic interviewer, the SCID-D is more than just a diagnostic tool; it can also accelerate the therapeutic alliance, promote client insight, and provide a roadmap for healing. The SCID-D's evaluation method is independent of DSM or ICD nosology, though its results can be mapped into their diagnostic criteria. • Listening to Ayahuasca: New Hope to Depression.

New World Library Listening to Ayahuasca: New Hope to Depression.

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisUsed for over 8000 years as a medicine in the Amazon rainforest, ayahuasca is a powerful psychedelic with a fully formed shamanic cosmology. Central to the indigenous belief system is the plant teacher, Grandmother Ayahuasca, who communicates with people both during and after ceremonies. DMT (Dimethyltryptamine), the active ingredient in ayahuasca, is illegal in this country, listed on Schedule 1 as a dangerous drug with high potential for abuse and no medical benefits.Despite the legal risks and the unfortunate fact that ayahuasca is a powerful purgative as well as a powerful psychedelic, there are increasing numbers of people in Western countries who have experienced the medicine. This fast-growing group of people is highly educated, mature and sophisticated, often dubbed cultural creatives. Some have suffered with intractable psychiatric illnesses who, failing to find relief from Western medicine, are seeking new hope with ayahuasca. Others are psychospiritual explorers who have learned about the benefits of ayahuasca, are connected enough to the subculture to find a safe opportunity to take it and are willing to run the risk of an exotic, illegal experience.Listening to Ayahuasca: New Hope for Depression, Addictions, PTSD, and Anxiety explores how ayahuasca is being used in a Western, psychospiritual context. The underground ayahuasca community, with a level of sophistication far beyond most therapists, knows that this medicine can have an almost immediate anti-depressant effect. They know from personal experience that ayahuasca offers hope for those suffering from intractable depression, addictions, PTSD, death anxiety, and other suffering.Seemingly miraculous accounts of healing of psychiatric symptoms have appeared in the mainstream media, notably “Hell and Back” (2006) by Kira Salak, published in National Geographic Adventure — an article that according to the magazine’s editor-in-chief “received ‘20 times the reader response mail’ than any other article the magazine has published since its inception.” Some of this onslaught of interest is due to the fact that Salak enthusiastically described the immediate antidepressant benefits of ayahuasca.Listening to Ayahuasca is based on Rachel Harris’s original research, the largest study of ayahuasca use in North America, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Psychoactive Drugs. The research questionnaire was sixteen pages long with extensive open-ended questions that people answered at great length. Respondents often wrote Harris personal letters because they wanted to share even more. There is an unusual amount of enthusiasm for ayahuasca and for research about its potential benefits, not like the psychedelic drug craze of the sixties, but a mature appreciation for the healing powers of this medicine. As a research scientist Harris wanted to know: What happens in the days and weeks following the ceremony? Do people find relief from psychiatric symptoms and does that relief last? Do people change their attitudes and behaviors and do they maintain these changes? Do ayahuasca infused insights generalize into daily life? Do transcendent experiences with ayahuasca translate into a more spiritual life? People in the ayahuasca community acknowledge the importance of integration following a ceremony but very little is known about facilitating such a therapeutic process. As a therapist, Harris brings the reader into her office for an intimate glimpse into how people are using ayahuasca as part of their psychological healing and spiritual development. Her experience of working with people using ayahuasca is that the medicine is like a rocket boost along the psychospiritual path, helping people to heal from childhood and traumatic events as well as to explore spiritual states of being. Harris tells her own stories of ayahuasca ceremonies: suffering with nausea and vomiting, rising to ecstatic heights, surviving a bad trip, receiving advice from Grandmother Ayahuasca to do the research and struggling with questions about the reality of spirit realms. People in her research study describe a great lifting of depression along with improvement in their close relationships. They report eating healthier diets and reducing their alcohol intake. These results describe central issues in psychotherapy: mood, addictions, personal relationships and self-care.In contrast to these findings, therapists have had a poor track record trying to motivate people to improve their diets and other health behaviors. The most intriguing finding from the research was that 75% of the people said, “Yes” to the question: “Do you feel that you have a personal relationship with the spirit of ayahuasca?” People wrote paragraphs, enthusiastically sharing their personal experiences with this mysterious plant teacher. The author confesses that she also has a personal relationship with Grandmother Ayahuasca that continues to mystify her and for which she has no explanation.Through the author’s wide-ranging original research, as well as her personal experiences, Listening to Ayahuasca provides a balanced view into how this ancient medicine is being used to alleviate modern ills and open up pathways to spiritual realms.

  • Treating Trauma in Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Guilford Publications Treating Trauma in Dialectical Behavior Therapy

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisMany DBT clients suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but until now the field has lacked a formal, tested protocol for exactly when and how to treat trauma within DBT. Combining the power of two leading evidence-based therapies--and designed to meet the needs of high-risk, severely impaired clients--this groundbreaking manual integrates DBT with an adapted version of prolonged exposure (PE) therapy for PTSD. Melanie S. Harned shows how to implement the DBT PE protocol with DBT clients who have achieved the safety and stability needed to engage in trauma-focused treatment. In a convenient large-size format, the book includes session-by-session guidelines, rich case examples, clinical tips, and 35 reproducible handouts and forms that can be downloaded and printed for repeated use.Trade Review"On rare occasions, a work comes along that expands our basic assumptions, elevates our practice, improves client outcomes, and advances the field substantively. Harned’s DBT PE manual is just that work. DBT PE is a game changer for clients with trauma histories who need DBT, granting providers the ability to formally target PTSD. With a meticulously crafted rationale; precise, principle-based guidelines for conducting exposures; DBT-infused processing; targeted applications for numerous trauma types and populations (including adolescents, who thrive with her approach); and instructive handouts and worksheets, this manual is a brilliant addition to the field."--Jill H. Rathus, PhD, Department of Psychology, Long Island University Post; Cognitive Behavioral Associates, Great Neck, New York “Harned has done a masterful job integrating DBT with PE and has conducted a body of research providing strong empirical support for this PTSD treatment. The manual thoroughly presents the theoretical underpinnings of DBT PE. It provides assessment guidelines, criteria for readiness for DBT PE, session procedures, and troubleshooting help. Harned describes how to work with clients after the final session of DBT PE, including ongoing exposure, relapse prevention, and Stage 3 DBT. A single case beautifully demonstrates implementation of DBT PE from beginning to end. This well-written treatment manual is suitable for trainees learning DBT PE as well as for very seasoned trauma therapists who wish to learn how to treat complex, high-risk patients with an effective, evidence-based treatment.”-- Elizabeth A. Hembree, PhD, Department of Psychiatry, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania "The DBT PE protocol has been demonstrated to improve emotion regulation and reduce self-injurious behaviors in patients with severe PTSD who are not able to benefit from PE on its own. This comprehensive, eagerly awaited manual provides the details and logistics of DBT PE, with all necessary worksheets and session guidelines. Harned describes how the protocol was developed in a stepped manner to ensure safety and efficacy, providing a model for those involved in treatment development. This manual is an excellent fit for any setting where providers and clinical students in training are working to build on the foundations of DBT and/or PE to work effectively with highly comorbid and distressed patients. Harned does an excellent job of synthesizing the complexities of caring for these patients with validation, support, effective intervention, and empathy."--Sheila A. M. Rauch, PhD, ABPP, Mark and Barbara Klein Distinguished Professor in Psychiatry and Deputy Director, Emory Healthcare Veterans Program, Emory University School of Medicine "Harned seamlessly integrates principles and protocols of PE into standard DBT--the synthesis is elegant as well as practical, clear as well as compassionate, behaviorally specific while allowing for flexibility. This highly readable manual walks therapists step by step through treatment of individuals who are haunted by traumatic memories and trapped in self-destructive patterns. Harned’s persistent optimism and encouragement will bolster the resolve of therapists and clients at a loss for what to do about trauma and PTSD. Most important, DBT PE has been shown to be amazingly effective. Every psychotherapist working with traumatized, difficult-to-treat populations should consider applying DBT PE to help their patients find lives of freedom and meaning."--Charles R. Swenson, MD, Department of Psychiatry, University of Massachusetts Medical School "Treatment of PTSD in individuals who are suicidal is a conundrum for therapists; there has been little research to guide us. This book lays out for clinicians a route--with evidence behind it--for helping those with PTSD and suicidal behavior to achieve a life worth living. It is a rare treat to find a clinical manual that is this clear and well written. This book will become a well-loved resource on many clinicians’ bookshelves, and I foresee using it frequently with my own trainees, especially those on internship or at the postdoctoral level."--Debra Kaysen, PhD, ABPP, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University-Table of ContentsI. The book enables readers to determine which strategies are appropriate for a particular child or group and rapidly incorporate them into practice.Trade Review"What a wealth of information! Each chapter describes a type of play and its historical roots and empirical support. Uses of each type of play are detailed, providing an understanding of the therapeutic benefits. The relevant age range is clearly identified. Specific suggestions are given for selecting materials and tailoring techniques for different clients, which makes implementation easy. As a recommended text, the book will give students the knowledge needed to discriminate among different techniques. Thanks for this fresh look at the classics!"--Linda E. Homeyer, PhD, LPCS, RPT-S, Professional Counseling Program, Texas State University "A gem of a book. The authors have taken a transtheoretical approach to their selection of tried-and-true techniques for therapists of all theoretical orientations. The techniques are organized into clear categories and include helpful variations, making this a unique toolbox for clinicians who work with children."--Athena A. Drewes, PsyD, RPT-S, Director of Clinical Training, Astor Services for Children and Families, Middletown, New York "Schaefer and Cangelosi offer a unique contribution to the field with this comprehensive exploration of play therapy techniques that have stood the test of time. Unlike many guides to play activities, the book includes a rationale for the use of each technique, empirical findings, and contraindications. It successfully combines applications and clinical foundations. This informative resource will prove useful for both novice and seasoned play therapists."--Sueann Kenney-Noziska, LCSW, RPT-S, private practice, Las Cruces, New Mexico -Schaefer and Cangelosi provide readers with a user-friendly guide of 58 different techniques with countless variations that can be applied while playing with children. The book is very well organized with interventions coming from seven broad categories that include techniques involving specific toys, metaphors, role-playing, creative arts, fantasy, and games….A variety of play therapists will appreciate that the authors interweave many popular theoretical orientations through the techniques, including cognitive behavior, Theraplay, psychoanalyses, humanism, solution focus, and more….Practitioners will benefit greatly from the authors' personal expertise gained through decades of play therapy practice. They introduce each technique with a rationale that highlights specific benefits for the child….Schaefer and Cangelosi's streamlined organization, clarity of writing, attention to a variety of client populations, and creativity offers a fresh new look and makes this a must-buy resource for play therapy students and practitioners alike.--American Journal of Play, 12/1/2017ƒƒEach activity offers a basic description and variations of the play, age relevance, and what resources are required. What makes this book stand out is that each entry also includes a historical perspective of the play, rationale for its use, and empirical findings--all well referenced….Essential Play Therapy Techniques has prompted my creativity to step up a gear and has me and the counselors I supervise thinking of new ways to use common play activities. One of my favorite suggestions is to use bubble blowing as a way of modeling deep breathing and relaxation techniques….Counselors at any stage of development (but especially those just starting out) will likely gain new ideas or be pushed to think of their own, and perhaps have a bit of fun in learning their historical significance.--BACP Children and Young People, 9/1/2016Table of ContentsI. Book SynopsisTrauma, Guilt and Reparation identifies the emotional barriers faced by people who have experienced severe trauma, as well as the emergence of reparative processes which pave the way from impasse to development. The book explores the issue of trauma with particular reference to issues of reparation and guilt. Referencing the original work of Klein and others, it examines how feelings of persistent guilt work to foil attempts at reparation, locking trauma deep within the psyche. It provides a theoretical understanding of the interplay between feelings of neediness with those of fear, wrath, shame and guilt, and offers a route for patients to experience the mourning and forgiveness necessary to come to terms with their own trauma. The book includes a Foreword by John Steiner.Illustrated by clinical examples throughout, it is written by an author whose empathy and experience make him an expert in the field. The book will be of great interest to psychotherapists, social workers and any professional working with traumatized individuals.Trade Review"Despite the fact that in recent decades the importance of trauma in the production of adult pathology has been rediscovered, there are few works that fall into the clinic to show in detail the specific link between suffering and original trauma. Weiss's book does it; he questions the quality of the trauma, from the emotional to the violent, and the question arises of how it is possible to repair the damage and what the relationship between the new object, the analyst, and the permanence of the internalized traumatic experience can be. This is an in-depth and well-documented study with rich and detailed clinical cases . In particular, the author studies the problem of reparation, mourning resentment, revenge, shame and finally of gratitude. A book that invites us to think about a complex but essential theoretical and clinical theme in psychoanalytic treatment." --Franco de Masi, Training and Supervising Analyst of the Italian Psychoanalytical Society and former President of Centro Milanese di Psicoanalisi and Secretary of the Training Milanese Institute"Severely disturbed and traumatized patients present analysts and therapists with some of the most complex and difficult challenges in contemporary clinical practice. Agonizing guilt, long lasting grievance, hatred and rage complicate and threaten to derail the reparative and mourning processes needed for recovery. Based on the author’s extensive clinical experience, Trauma, Guilt and Reparation offers readers a thoughtful, richly illustrated, comprehensive approach to these problems and serves to help advance analytic understanding and practice." --Howard B. An extraordinary piece of storytelling.”“Atmospheric and evocative… masterful writing.”“A beautifully drawn novel. …Achingly well realised.” -- Roger Hutchinson * West Highland Free Press *"A poignant novel." -- Nicola Sturgeon“A searing poetic meditation on stoicism and loss.” -- Mariella Frostrup * BBC Radio 4 Open Book *“A powerful novel… A poignant exploration of love, loss and survivor’s guilt.” -- Nick Rennison * Sunday Times *“Triumphant… The writing is breath-taking, poignant and takes great pains to immerse the reader in ideas of trauma, suffering and the shared culture of a grieving generation. [A] rich and lyrical writing style.” Lochaber Life, Book of the Month;“Timely, clever, evocative… Murray has said that this novel took him around sixteen years to complete and on the strength of this poignant offering one hopes we will not have to wait so long for his second.”“A classic bildungsroman… It is that rarity: a work of imagination which reads like experienced truth. It’s the kind of book you want to read again as soon as you finish it, because you know there is so much that will be revealed on that second reading: the kind of novel which can enrich your life.” -- Allan Massie * Scotsman, Best Scottish Books of 2018 *“Murray is an evocative painter of landscapes and a deeply sympathetic writer… This diligently researched book exists principally as a space for forgotten voices to sound, bearing witness not just to this tragedy, but to the terrible cost of World War I itself.” -- Stephanie Cross * Daily Mail *“Beautifully and sensitively told, by one of the great lyrical writers of our time, D S Murray ... [A] brutal reminder of how resilient and tangled are the tentacles of tragedy.” -- Cathy MacDonald[A] tightly structured, time-hopping memoir-but-not-a-memoir… A story spanning 74 years whittled meticulously into shape… Murray pulls off the perfect combination of fact and fiction… [His] assured journey through the disruption, trauma, love and loss threaded unspoken through one Lewis family, with barely a word of the shipwreck, is on every page a novel of the Iolaire disaster. “ -- Catriona Black * Herald and National *“A very special book… a poignant tale of family, love and relationships lived out in the hardest of places… Donald S Murray is superb in bringing his characters to life and making the incidents they encounter feel utterly real.”“Gave me an insight into the Iolaire disaster which no history book could manage… a powerful book…which reveals new layers with every reading. It is history brought to life through fiction, and when it is done in a manner as moving and beautiful as this it is invaluable.” -- Alistair Braidwood * Scots Whay Hae *

Book SynopsisVicarious Trauma in the Legal Profession is a practical guide to trauma, burnout and collective care. Using case studies from lawyers in their own words, it provides the individual with tools for self-reflection and provides organisations with an understanding of trauma-informed working practices and guidance towards implementing collective care, training and support in the workplace. Vicarious Trauma in the Legal Profession is essential reading for social justice lawyers across many areas of law and should be required reading for organisational leaders, HR managers, practice managers, representational and membership associations and those in charge of regulation of the professions. Lawyers working in legal aid, social justice or with survivors of injury regularly work with traumatic and emotionally potent caseloads and often draw on skills for which they have had no formal training. They bear witness to the pain of clients, to the suffering that humans inflict upon each other, and to the incredible strength of survivors of violence, torture and abuse. They do this while dealing with the financial pressure of poor rates of pay, constantly overstretched resources and a relentlessly hostile political environment. While there has been a growing conversation within the legal profession about the mental health of lawyers, much of it looks at mental health as a primarily personal issue: the individual's work/life balance and stress as a personal response. Vicarious Trauma in the Legal Profession draws focus to the impact of traumatic casework for lawyers and how collectively change can be made.Table of Contents*What is trauma? *Vicarious trauma *Vicarious trauma and the legal profession *Physiological effects and impacts of vicarious trauma *Guilt and compassion satisfaction and risk factors *The frontline: personal, social and political contexts *Raising awareness and creating supportive cultures *Individual action *Team and peer action *Organisational action *Profession-wide action

Practical Roadmap: Access a practical guide for Trade Review"Repairing the profound damage of early abuse, neglect, and deprivation is as infinitely complex as the healing of any injury to the human organism. In this beautifully written work, Ruth Cohn describes in spellbinding detail the multiple modalities and skills that a therapist needs to bring to the table to make this work possible. She demonstrates the need for a creative use and activation of all our senses, combined with patience, compassion, humility, and hard-earned self-knowledge. This book provides clinicians and curious consumers with a roadmap to finding both a voice and a spine. A true guide to healing." — Bessel A. Van der Kolk, MD, president of the Trauma Research Foundation, professor of psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine, and author of the # 1 New York Times bestseller The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma "Ruth Cohn has written a beautiful book on the neglected topic of neglect, filled with insight and compassion. I highly recommend this book to every therapist." — Sebern Fisher, author of Neurofeedback in the Treatment of Developmental Trauma: Calming the Fear-Driven Brain "Ruth Cohn presents a moving account of what treating neglect is like for both the client and the therapist. Using case examples, Cohn presents elegantly how to approach the clinical complexities of neglect using an integrative approach ranging from psychodynamic principles to neurofeedback and sensorimotor therapies. This book will give hope to all who continue to persevere in reaching the restoration of the self in the aftermath of agonizing attachment wounds. A must read!" — Ruth Lanius, MD, PhD, author of The Impact of Early Life Trauma on Health and Disease, The Hidden Epidemic, and Healing the Traumatized Self: Consciousness, Neuroscience, Treatment "In this wonderful integration of theory and compassion, Ruth Cohn brings together clinical experience and psychological curiosity grounded in neuroscience. Chock full of stories that illuminate the theory, Ruth Cohn’s book makes the implicit experiences of childhood neglect tangible. More importantly, she gives us a clinical framework to effectively transform the pain people live in." — Deirdre Fay, MSW, author of Becoming Safely Embodied and Attachment-Based Yoga and Meditation for Trauma Recovery "Ruth Cohn achieves her aim of making the psychotherapy of clinical states resulting from early neglect both fascinating and rewarding. With numerous vignettes from the wisdom of her years immersed in the psychotherapy of neglect, she illuminates the most important qualities needed by the therapist. Although this book is primarily for therapists, many patients may find their experiences mirrored in a way that promotes their understanding of how they came to their difficulties in regulating emotions, in forming secure attachments, and in having a sense of the body-based self." — Frank Corrigan, MD, author of The Comprehensive Resource Model: Effective Therapeutic Techniques for the Healing of Complex Trauma and Neurobiology and Treatment of Traumatic Dissociation: Towards an Embodied Self Table of Contents1. They describe expressive/experiential/body-based creative arts techniques that help traumatized children address and process the effects of their traumatic experiences. Among the many strengths of this book are its focus on flexibly adapting the various strategies to the specific needs and context of each child and its emphasis on strengths and resiliency."--Christine A. Courtois, PhD, ABPP, private practice (retired), Washington, DC; consultant and trainer, trauma psychology and treatment "Another exceptional book from a highly regarded clinician, author, and speaker! Malchiodi has assembled a group of experts to present the beautifully written and illustrated second edition of this important volume. This second edition is a welcome addition to the libraries of those who practice developmentally sensitive trauma work with children.”--Paris Goodyear-Brown, LCSW, RPT-S, Nurture House, Franklin, Tennessee “As understanding has increased of neurobiology and sensory processes in trauma, so has the need for practitioners to develop skills in the use of creative arts and expressive therapies for treatment. This well-written volume offers both breadth and depth, while providing flexible and developmentally friendly treatment approaches that are client-focused and driven by individual and family needs relating to trauma. Compelling case examples bring these approaches to life. I highly recommend this work to all practitioners who work with children and families living with trauma in its many forms. It’s a wonderful book!”--Risë VanFleet, PhD, RPT-S, CDBC, President, Family Enhancement and Play Therapy Center, Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania -The book has a rich collection of black-and-white sketches that are worth the price of the book on its own merit. They speak when words fail....The book has good reference information, organized by chapters. (on the first edition)--Illness, Crisis and Loss, 01/01/2010ƒƒI would recommend this well-researched and well-informed book to therapists working in schools with children of displaced, disenfranchised survivors of war and disaster and those working with families around the world who are struggling to make sense of their traumatizing experiences....This book is packed with suggested activities for therapists to help restore the child's sense of safety and ability to function creatively and spontaneously. (on the first edition)--Child and Adolescent Mental Health, 02/01/2009ƒƒThe book is well structured and each chapter offers the reader a deeper understanding of specific creative applications and useful interventions for working with traumatized children, families, and groups....I found Malchiodi's presentation of the neurobiological effects of trauma to be an exciting introduction to new ways of looking at trauma work with children. It serves as a foundation for the important and moving work described by the contributing authors and sets the tone for the book. (on the first edition)--Art Therapy, 05/01/2014Table of ContentsI. • PlayBased Interventions for Childhood Anxieties

Guilford Publications PlayBased Interventions for Childhood Anxieties

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIllustrating the power of play for helping children overcome a wide variety of worries, fears, and phobias, this book provides a toolkit of play therapy approaches and techniques. Coverage encompasses everyday fears and worries in 3- to 12-year-olds as well as anxiety disorders and posttraumatic problems. Leading practitioners describe their approaches step by step and share vivid illustrative case material. Each chapter also summarizes the research base for the interventions discussed. Key topics include adapting therapy to each child's developmental level, engaging reluctant or less communicative clients, and involving parents in treatment.Trade Review"Provides a plethora of thoughtful and effective techniques to incorporate into play therapy practice. As a play therapy supervisor and trainer, I recommend this book as a go-to manual to expand therapists' understanding of how anxiety manifests in children and what play-based interventions are most helpful. Of particular interest are the multiple ways in which parents are included as an integral part of the interventions. This book will have a prominent place in my play therapy library."--Susan M. Carter, PhD, LP, RPT-S, private practice, Kalamazoo, Michigan "With fear, anxiety, and phobias so prevalent in the lives of children, this volume is welcome and timely. Drewes and Schaefer have brought together seasoned international experts and have structured their chapters along a helpful continuum, from developmentally normative fears to more intensive and complex anxiety disorders and posttraumatic issues. The detailed case studies foreground the individual styles and coping strategies of children and families and remind us of the critical role of parent involvement in treatment success. This valuable resource hones in on how to support children in learning to tolerate and move around or through their emotional distress."--Mary Anne Peabody, EdD, LCSW, RPT-S, Social and Behavioral Sciences Program, University of Southern Maine "This wonderful book enables the clinician to engage fearful children, conceptualize the roots of their distress, and provide age-appropriate play-based interventions. The benefits of early intervention and an understanding of neurobiology are highlighted. As a training provider, I was delighted to find simple techniques that parents can be taught, as well as cohesive approaches for implementation by psychotherapists. The book emphasizes the need for informed, integrated clinical decision making rather than reliance on random techniques or a single model when treating children with complex mental health issues. It should be read and referred to regularly by all play therapists and play therapy trainees."--Eileen Prendiville, ECP, Course Director, The Children’s Therapy Centre, Ireland -Stalwarts of play therapy Athena Drewes and Charles Schaefer have teamed up again to edit a wonderfully informative collection of essays focused on a wide array of childhood anxieties from nightmares to posttraumatic anxieties….Many of the authors include a clear and separate section of outcome studies related to their essays. This seems to be an essential feature that can aid clinicians in making informed treatment decisions and help them move beyond an eclectic approach to treating anxiety….A valuable resource, with expert authors and clear, practical, and well-researched strategies for dealing with childhood anxieties….It will serve as a strong resource for client conceptualization, treatment planning, family consultation, and goal setting.--American Journal of Play, 1/31/2019Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. Book SynopsisAn Irish Times book of the year 2022A powerful, probing book about PTSD.As a journalist Keane has covered conflict and brutality across the world for more than thirty years, from Rwanda, Sudan, South Africa, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine and many more. Driven by an irresistible compulsion to be where the night is darkest, he made a name for reporting with humanity and empathy from places where death and serious injury were not abstractions, and tragedy often just a moment's bad luck away. But all this time he struggled not to be overwhelmed by another story, his acute complex post-traumatic stress disorder', a condition arising from exposure to multiple instances of trauma experienced over a long period. This condition has caused him to suffer a number of mental breakdowns and hospitalisations. Despite this, and countless promises to do otherwise, he has gone back to the wars again and again. Why?In this powerful and intensely personal book, Keane interrogates what it is that draws him to the wars, what keeps him there and offers a reckoning of the damage done.PTSD affects people from all walks of life. Trauma can be found in many places, not just war. Keane's book speaks to the struggle of all who are trying to recover from injury, addiction and mental breakdown. It is a survivor's story drawn from lived experience, told with honesty, courage and an open heart.Trade Review Praise for The Madness ‘Keane has not just the courage to risk death so that the most important stories can be told, as well as the eye to tell them with vivid subtlety, but also the humility to reveal the havoc that this task visits on the beholder’ Spectator ‘A brutally honest exploration of what motivates Keane to keep reporting on atrocities despite the toll on his mental health… Gentle but unflinching’ Guardian, Book of the Day ‘The Madness is engaging without resorting to sensation. Fluent prose follows the decline of the political situation – and of Keane’s own mental health – in chilling, compelling detail’ Observer ‘Fergal Keane opens doors into closed places. He lets us look inside those complex compartments where fear, anxiety, anger and panic lurk, and he tells a story of being afraid all of his life… beautifully written… This is an important book’ Irish Times ‘Fergal Keane’s torments might be as nothing compared to the sufferings he has observed, and his work can do nothing to alleviate those sufferings, but what chance is there of any restitution, no matter how inadequate it may be, without witnesses to the crimes of the truly guilty?’ TLS ‘The Madness is a heady reckoning with trauma, adrenaline and that mixture of moral courage and compulsion that drives the news cycle, Fergal Keane tells difficult, sometimes horrible truths about the world, but it is the truths he finds about himself that make this book a necessary read’ Annie Enright ‘A really important piece of work’ Susanna Reid, on Good Morning Britain ‘An immensely brave book’ Tortoise 'Powerful, and heartbreaking’ Audrey Magee ‘The Madness is an extraordinary, captivating account of one man's journey in search of truth, as he excavates the human story from chaos’ Elaine Feeney

I can''t recommend highly enough'' Sunny Singh''A revolutionary work of beauty, brilliance, compassion and ultimately, hope'' Robin DiAngeloThe consequences of racism can be found in our bodies - in skin and sinew, in bone and blood. In this ground-breaking, inspiring work, therapist Resmaa Menakem examines the damage, the physical consequences of discrimination, from the perspective of body-centred psychology. He argues that until we learn to heal and overcome the generational anguish of white supremacy, we will all continue to bear its scars. My Grandmother''s Hands is an extraordinary call to action for all of us to recognize that racism affects not only the mind, but also the body, and introduces an alternative view of what we can do to grow beyond our racial divides.Trade ReviewInsightful, thought-provoking and profound. I can't recommend highly enough -- Sunny SinghIt's not just a manual for feeling your feelings, it's an excavation of the soul. . . Perhaps the most compelling idea in My Grandmother's Hands is that culture lives in the body - in the food we eat, the rituals we perform and ways in which we do or do not soothe our own bodies. It means that when we have the capacity to cultivate new cultures among us through embodied practices. -- Rosel Jackson Stern * gal-dem *A revolutionary work of beauty, brilliance, compassion and ultimately, hope. With eloquence and grace, Resmaa Menakem masterfully lays out the missing piece in the puzzle of why, despite so many good intentions, we have not achieved racial justice. . . This is an intimate guidebook toward racial healing, one that achieves that rare combination for its readers: it is deeply intellectually stimulating while also providing practical ways to engage in the process of repair -- Robin DiAngelo, author of White FragilityFull of wisdom and understanding. Menakem offers a new way to understand racism and, more importantly, to heal it. This book lays out a path to freedom and peace, first for individual readers, then for our culture as a whole. A must-read -- Nancy Van Dyken, author of Everyday NarcissismResmaa Menakem's penetrating insight into trauma is profoundly impactful, but even more powerful and useful are his strategies for addressing it -- for healing. A brilliant thinker, he is able to bring a multitude of research and experience together to guide us in our understanding of how trauma affects our lives. This is essential reading if we are to wrest ourselves from the grips of trauma -- Alexs Pate, author of AmistadForget diversity. Forget teaching tolerance. Forget white guilt. With clarity and insight, Resmaa Menakem offers a profoundly different approach to healing racism -- John Friel and Linda Friel, co-authors of Adult ChildrenMy Grandmother's Hands invites each of us to heal the racial trauma that lives in our bodies. As Resmaa Menakem explains, healing this trauma takes courage and a commitment to viscerally feel this racial pain. By skillfully combining therapy expertise with social criticism and practical guidance, he reveals a path forward for individual and collective healing that involves experiencing the sensations of this journey with each step. -- Alex Haley, Professor at the University of Minnesota’s Center for Spirituality & HealingMenakem cuts to the heart of America's racial crisis with the precision of a surgeon in ways few have before. As this amazing work shows us, policies alone will not do it, and bold social action, though vital to achieving justice, will require those engaged in it to also take action on the injury, deep and personal, from which we all suffer -- Tim Wise, author of White Like MeAn intimate and direct look at the way the Black-white dynamic is held, not only in institutions such as policing, but also in the bodies of all of those involved . . . offers concrete practices that are part of the work of shifting the violence of the original wound -- Susan Raffo, writer, and community organizerResmaa Menakem offers a path of internal reconciliation for a person enduring the generational trauma of American racism, and gives us all a chance to dream of a healing from it -- Keith Ellison, Member of Congress and Deputy Chair of the Democratic National CommitteeAs a career peace officer I entered this noble profession to serve my community, but I had never received any instruction in the police academy or been issued a piece of equipment that prepared me to recognize or examine community trauma . . . or my own. Book SynopsisHumanising Mental Health Care in Australia is a unique and innovative contribution to the healthcare literature that outlines the trauma-informed approaches necessary to provide a more compassionate model of care for those who suffer with mental illness. The impact of abuse and trauma is frequently overlooked in this population, to the detriment of both individual and society. This work highlights the importance of recognising such a history and responding humanely. The book explores the trauma-informed perspective across four sections. The first outlines theory, constructs and effects of abuse and trauma. The second section addresses the effects of abuse and trauma on specific populations. The third section outlines a diverse range of individual treatment approaches. The final section takes a broader perspective, examining the importance of culture and training as well as the organisation and delivery of services. Written in an accessible style by a diverse group of national and international experts, Humanising Mental Health Care in Australia is an invaluable resource for mental health clinicians, the community managed and primary health sectors, policy makers and researchers, and will be a helpful reference for people who have experienced trauma and those who care for them.Trade ReviewThe learning from this book will also enable others to develop a greater understanding of the appropriate approach to the treatment of people suffering complex trauma. The Honourable Peter McClellan, AM, QC, Chair, Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.Every mental health clinician and health policy maker and administrator in the country should read Humanising Mental Health Care in Australia. Set out in four sections, it is an easy to read, informative and important text about the impact of trauma on mental health, and why it is important to recognise it and respond appropriately, at both an individual level and a systems level. No matter what your background, if you are interested in how to improve the delivery of compassionate mental health care, I guarantee you will find true ‘pearls of wisdom’ in this book.Dr Peggy Brown, AO, Former Chief Executive Officer, National Mental Health CommissionThe title of this book, Humanising Mental Health Care In Australia, embraces a deep and overdue imperative in mental health care, not only in Australia but around the world. The paradox of surging momentum of awareness of mental illness contrasting with the increasingly poor quality of mental health care underlines the urgent need for reform and a more sophisticated approach. We have lurched from a brainless to a mindless psychiatry when we need a much more sophisticated blend, which transcends the old false dichotomies. The centrality and potency of trauma in creating and embedding mental illness is reflected in this high quality monograph which captures a wide range of Australian expertise in a balanced yet passionate way. Other biological, psychological and social dimensions are also crucial if we are to humanise mental health care, however trauma is the most likely one to be suppressed or denied, so affirmative action is required. This book supports such affirmative action. Courage, scholarship and skill are essential if the mission to humanise mental health care is to succeed. This book is an essential resource in this mission.Professor Patrick McGorry, AO, Executive Director, OrygenTable of ContentsA Plea About the Editors List of Contributors Acknowledgments Editors’ Notes Foreword Peter McClellan, AM, QC Introduction Richard Benjamin Part 1: Theory and Constructs 1. Book SynopsisDuring his lifetime John Bowlby, the founder of attachment theory, was unable to publish as he wished due to strong opposition to his ideas. Now, with the support of the Bowlby family, several complete and near-complete works from the John Bowlby Archive at the Wellcome Collection are published for the first time. The collection spans Bowlbyâs thinking from his early ideas to later reflections, and is split into four parts. Part 1 includes essays on the topic of loss, mourning and depression, outlining his thoughts on the role of defence mechanisms. Part 2 covers Bowlbyâs ideas around anxiety, guilt and identification, including reflections on his observations of and work with evacuated children. Part 3 features three seminars on the subject of conflict, in which Bowlby relates clinical concepts to both political philosophy and psychoanalysis in innovative ways. Part 4 consists of Bowlbyâs later reflections on trauma and loss, and on his own work as a therapist. This remarkable collection not only clarifies Bowlbyâs relationship with psychoanalysis but features his elaboration of key concepts in attachment theory and important moments of self-criticism.It will be essential reading for clinicians, researchers, and others interested in human development, relationships and adversity.Trade Review"This impressive collection of unpublished works provides the reader with an exceptional opportunity to further understand the treasured and influential thoughts and ideas of John Bowlby, especially his theoretical perspective on trauma and loss. This book is a must read for clinicians interested in the applications of attachment theory, for researchers who wish to broaden their understanding of attachment theory, and for developmental psychopathologists whose main principles have been greatly influenced by Bowlby’s brilliant viewpoint. Professionals from a variety of disciplines, in addition to students in developmental and clinical science will profit greatly from a thorough reading of this volume." --Dante Cicchetti, McKnight Presidential Chair, William Harris Professor, Institute of Child Development, University of Minnesota, USA"An extraordinary selection of previously unpublished material giving brilliant insights into the working of a brilliant mind. The editors are to be warmly congratulated on a collection that is not only of immense historical value, but remarkably speaks to current controversies in relation to trauma, resilience and the philosophy of psychological science. An essential supplement to the Bowlby oeuvre." --Peter Fonagy, Professor & Head of the Division of Psychology and Language Sciences at UCL; Chief Executive of the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families, London, UK "Attachment scholars and clinicians alike will find in this collection a series of rare treasures, among them insights into Bowlby’s bold challenges to psychoanalysis, and into the ways his work laid the groundwork for contemporary relational and trauma theory. These papers, many of them well over fifty years old, remind us – once again – of Bowlby’s brilliance and remarkable prescience in predicting much of what is mainstream developmental and clinical theory today." --Arietta Slade, Clinical Professor at the Yale Child Study Centre and Professor Emerita, Clinical Psychology at the City University of New York, USA "This book is a treasure. What a gift to have further seminal thoughts from one of the greatest thinkers of the twentieth century. Readers who want to know more about the scientist and those who want to know more about the clinician both will find this book valuable. All will enjoy learning more about the dogged curiosity and humility of this giant of a scholar. Bowlby was way ahead of his time in understanding segregated mental systems, developmental consequences of trauma, and family dynamics. He still speaks to us today about practical current issues such as displacement and migration." --Alan Sroufe, Professor Emeritus of Child Psychology, University of Minnesota, USA"John Bowlby created a theory that enabled researchers and others to observe and ask questions about infant-parent and child-parent interactions in a completely new way. His theory laid the groundwork for studying how children and their parents construct a bond, or attachment, through sensitive and attuned interaction, what can go wrong in the process, and how attachment disorders may be approached and treated. In a world in which people are increasingly distracted and alienated, attachment theory, as it has developed, offers the potential for promoting healing empathy, both for others and for oneself. These newly published texts of John Bowlby are a treasure trove for anyone interested in attachment theory and its genius application in psychotherapeutic work by John Bowlby." --Professor Karl Heinz Brisch, M.D., Chair of the Early Life Care Institute at the Paracelsus Medical University, Salzburg, Austria"This must-read volume re-affirms John Bowlby as a towering figure in psychological science. It shows how ahead of his time he was in his evaluation of the strengths and limitations of Freud’s work (the essay on defences is a masterpiece), his encylopaedic command of ethological, psychological and neuroscientific evidence, and the brilliance and originality of his thought. Compiled by cutting-edge scholars, it reinforces Attachment, with its deep Darwinian roots, as an essential starting point for all serious psychologists, psychotherapists and mental health researchers." --Professor Jeremy Holmes, University of Exeter, UK "John Bowlby was one of the most courageous and creative thinkers of the past century. He illuminated in unique ways the origins of our humanity. We are gifted here to have the privilege to understand further how he reflected on the central questions surrounding the early attachment relationship and wended his way towards his masterful trilogy on Attachment, Separation, and Loss. This volume of unpublished papers has many riches that will occupy Bowlby scholars and researchers long into the future." –Karlen Lyons-Ruth, Ph.D., Professor, Harvard Medical School"A fascinating insight into the workings of John Bowlby’s creative mind, especially his prescient concerns about necessary future changes in psychoanalytic defense theory associated with traumatic loss of the mother in the earliest stages of human development." --Allan N. Book SynopsisPsychosis and the Traumatised Self explores what it is like to experience psychosis for individuals with histories of childhood physical and sexual abuse. The book additionally explores how meaning expressed in psychosis might originate from the effects of abuse, but also long-term life difficulties, motivations, memories, social history, and struggles to narrate and understand. One chapter focuses on refugees who suffered trauma as adults and later became psychotic. Another chapter examines how trauma leads to the destruction of certainty and trust, thereby opening a pathway to persecutory ideas. Drawing on a developmental model of trauma, it is proposed that dissociated parts of the self that developed during childhood contribute to psychosis in adults when undergoing difficulties and stress.Presented with case illustrations, the book will be useful for those who work in the area of psychosis and abuse to understand the experiences of individuals, and how weTrade Review'This is a detailed, discerning, and original study of trauma and psychosis. By reflecting carefully on first-person accounts, Rhodes provides important insights into a range of traumatic experiences and how they relate to psychosis. The book will be an invaluable resource for clinicians and researchers, promoting empathy, theoretical understanding, and effective therapy.'Matthew Ratcliffe, Professor of Philosophy, University of York'John Rhodes’ book is a great example of how qualitative research can contribute to the development of psychotherapeutic approaches. Drawing on a phenomenological analysis of interviews with people with psychosis diagnoses who have experienced different types of trauma, Rhodes discusses the implications of this analysis for therapeutic work. He reviews a range of different therapeutic approaches and then describes his use of an integrated approach that draws on Schema Therapy. The book will be of value both to practitioners and qualitative researchers interested in clinical practice.' David Harper, Professor, Programme Director (Academic) of the Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of East London.'This book makes a major contribution to understanding how abuse and trauma, including political violence, inform our understanding of psychoses and those who experience them. Its rich analysis of the experiences of the personal experiences of his patients helps the reader better understand the role of trauma in the making of the self, including the psychotic self, and how we then attempt to live in the world. The book draws on concepts and theories from both science and philosophy to enrich its account. It ends with a cornucopia of rich ideas about therapy for those with psychotic experiences based on the long clinical experience of the author.'Oliver Mason, Reader in Clinical Psychology, University of Surrey'Real world clinical work with persons diagnosed with psychosis often reveals deep and complex histories of trauma. This novel and original volume by John Rhodes offers a rich exploration of differing forms of trauma and their deep effects on the experience of self-coherence and one’s place in the world. The first part of the book describes the emotional and relational dynamics underlying these children's behaviour. The second part of the book offers a glimpse behind the scenes of the authors'' psychotherapy practice, elaborating the processes of change and growth that can enable developmental recovery from wound to scar' in children who have experienced complex trauma. As such, the book aims to demystify' what psychotherapy with a traumatised child may look like, as well as offer insights and tools which can support carers in their daily interactions with these children. This book will be of great use to the adoptive parents and foster carers of children who have experienced complex trauma, and the care Trade Review"It is fair to say that psychotherapists and mental health professionals do not always show a capacity to translate their clinical knowledge into a language that can be understood by parents, carers and others involved with the care of children. But in this invaluable book, Nicole Vliegen and her colleagues manage to share the deep understanding they have developed, over many years, of children who have experienced early maltreatment and trauma, and give us an insight into how therapy can help to support them. The book is both realistic about the challenges these children and their families face, but also life-affirming. They describe the ways in which these children can be helped to evolve a self-narrative from ‘wounded and traumatised’ to ‘scarred but liveable’, and they do so in a language that will be accessible to all those adults who may accompany these children on their life-long journey." -- Nick Midgley, Professor of Psychological Therapies with Children and Young People, Anna Freud Centre and UCL, London, UK"Tragically, this is a timely and much needed volume.
