  • Sailing the Shallows

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Sailing the Shallows

Book SynopsisA beautifully written and illustrated manifesto for the simple joys of sailing a small boat, filled with useful advice and techniques.Sailing a dinghy is your gateway to adventure. It requires little of you other than self-reliance and self-confidence, as well as a respect for the subtleties of the local climate and topography. Out at sea in a small boat, nature is not something to be observed disinterestedly: it batters and drenches you, refreshes and enlivens you.Sailing the Shallows is a manifesto for a different attitude to sailing, far removed from the ostentation and complexity of modern-day yachting. Roger Barnes combines lyrical writing and beautifully drawn illustrations with simple and practical wisdom on experiencing the pure joy of being out on the water in a small boat. We accompany him on his early days afloat in the Lake District, paddling Hildegard ''the communist canoe'' in France and undertaking more extreme passages (even capsizing) in his beloved Avel Dro. Along the way Roger weaves in advice on skills, techniques and lessons learned: this is a book to be read and re-read not just for the stories but the keen insights into small boat sailing techniques.Sailing the Shallows describes a lifetime's journey towards the recognition that cruising in a dinghy is not an imperfect and provisional way to get afloat, but the purest and most perfect way to go sailing.

Book SynopsisLike its companions West Aegean and East Aegean, Ionian is ideal for charterers and flotilla sailors who are onboard for a relatively short time, but also for longer term cruisers on their own yachts who are looking for additional pilotage and background information for this popular cruising ground. As with all the Heikell guides, Ionian not only gives all the essential information you need but also exudes the charm and flavour of this corner of the Mediterranean. 'Heikell's style is easy to digest and gives pleasure in the details of the history, geography and social circumstances of the places described as well as the essential sailing information.' The Little Ship 'This book, as well as being a practical manual on Ionian cruising, seems to have absorbed much of the author's personal feelings regarding the charm which draws him back to it, and any reader who has had a whiff of the magic spell of the Greek islands will sense this, and inevitably renew the resolve to return and experience it once again in greater measure.' Nautical Magazine 'Rod Heikell nowadays is to the Mediterranean as gin is to tonic. It is difficult to imagine sailing there without one of his guides. Clear pilot notes, chartlets and plentiful illustrations, with entertaining commentaries on each place. Up-to-date observations on local and national regulations. The new edition does not disappoint. If one must choose, I would have no hesitation in recommending Heikell.' Cruising Association 'Rod has a knack for dropping in snippets of interest and colour to give the reader a feel for the atmosphere of each port or bay.' Yachting Monthly 'Like all Rod Heikell's pilots, it is also a travel guide in its own right.' Ionian Magazine 'The sailing directions are particularly useful when entering the smaller anchorages and harbours, for which little information is to be found on charts, and include excellent harbour plans and top quality aerial photographs.' Flying Fish Magazine (Ocean Cruising Club)Table of ContentsCovering the coast and islands southwards from Corfu to Finakounda and eastwards to Mesolongion, this much-loved guide contains more detail of many of the smaller anchorages and harbours than are comprehensively covered in Rod Heikell's Greek Waters Pilot.

Book SynopsisIntroduced by Annie Proulx, lose yourself in an epic naval journey in this Booker Prize-winning historical novel: the first in the acclaimed Sea Trilogy by the author of Lord of the Flies.I grow a little crazy, I think, like all men at sea who live too close to each other and too close thereby to all that is monstrous under the sun and moon . . .Edmund Talbot is sailing to Australia in the early nineteenth century. In his journal, he records mounting tensions aboard the ancient, stinking warship, as officers, sailors, soldiers and emigrants jostle in the cramped darkness below decks. But when something happens to Reverend Colley that brings him into a 'hell of self-degradation', it seems that shame is a force deadlier than the sea itself . . .'It is the emotional veracity of life at sea that powers Golding's exceptional writing ... The fury, mystery and challenge.' • Imray, Laurie, Norie & Wilson Ltd The Shell Channel Pilot: South coast of England,

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFollowing the pioneering work of the legendary Adlard Coles, the book was passed to Captain John Coote RN in 1982. In his comparatively short, ten-year tenure, John Coote expanded the coverage from the English coast to include northern France. He also applied a characteristic humour to the shoreside aspect of the text which has been enthusiastically adopted by Tom Cunliffe, the present and third compiler of this unique work. This is a revised 8th edition published by Imray under Cunliffe's hand. 'Shell' is more than a harbour guide. It also provides a reassuring hand on the shoulder for Channel navigation, with useful passage notes gleaned from the compiler's personal experience of more than 40 years running the tides and finding the eddies. His frank remarks regarding harbour and recreational facilities have long been relied upon by sailors of all generations and nationalities. While leading to some enlightening secrets, they have been known to cause landlords whose establishments fall short of the required standard to lose the will to live. Working with harbourmasters and a dedicated group of carefully selected yachtsmen and women, Cunliffe has kept this pilot as up to date as is humanly possible. More than being technically sound, which is to be expected from a Yachtmaster Examiner, the book is also a thoroughly enjoyable read. • The Sea Chart

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Sea Chart

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisTo sail the oceans needed skill as well as courage and experience, and the sea chart with, where appropriate, the coastal view, was the tool by which ships of trade, transport or conquest navigated their course. This book looks at the history and development of the chart and the related nautical map, in both scientific and aesthetic terms, as a means of safe and accurate seaborne navigation. The Italian merchant-venturers of the early thirteenth century developed the earliest ‘portulan’ pilot charts of the Mediterranean. The subsequent speed of exploration by European seafarers, encompassing the New World, the extraordinary voyages around the Cape of Good Hope and the opening up of the trade to the East, India and the Spice Islands were both a result of the development of the sea chart and additionally as an aid to that development. By the eighteenth century the discovery and charting of the coasts and oceans of the globe had become a strategic naval and commercial requirement. Such involvements led to Cook’s voyages in the Pacific, the search for the Northwest Passage and races to the Arctic and Antarctic. The volume is arranged along chronological and then geographical lines. Each of the ten chapters is split into two distinct halves examining the history of the charting of a particular region and the context under which such charting took place following which specific navigational charts and views together with other relevant illustrations are presented. Key figures or milestones in the history of charting are then presented in stand-alone story box features. This new edition features around 40 new charts and accompanying text.Trade ReviewThe magnificent, enduring legacy which Lt Cdr John Blake, RN, has bequeathed to the world is one of those astonishing volumes which changes lives because it transforms the way history is viewed. 1 in stock

Book Synopsis'Mediterranean Weather Handbook for Sailors' is an indispensable reference providing a general understanding of the various phenomena concurring to determine weather in the Mediterranean as well as useful forecasting aids. It is written for sailors, not meteorologists; theory is kept to a minimum, while every effort is made to provide clear interpretative tools that are helpful in understanding actual weather and forecasting. Roberto Ritossa is a meteorology expert and this handbook is a result of many years research on Mediterranean weather patterns. This second edition includes details of new and changed websites that offer meteorological services. Throughout the graphics have been improved and for some sections additional illustrations have been added. "Roberto Ritossa has produced an excellent weather text book for those who choose to sail in the Mediterranean. Although it claims to be 'written for sailors, not meteorologists' there is more than enough essential theory to satisfy the keenest of amateur meteorologists. I would certainly buy a copy if I were to ever plan to return to the Mediterranean, as a sailor." - IG, Cruising.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisToday travellers by land, sea and air take accurate navigation for granted but it was not always thus. The author, a highly experienced sailor, sets out to record the development of navigational techniques from the earliest time, five millenniums ago. As explorers started to venture offshore into the unknown they had to rely on the sun and stars for direction. From this pioneers turned to mathematics, astrolobes, sextants and increasing accurate clocks to measure latitude and later longitude. More recently major breakthroughs with electronic navigation, GPS and other satellite systems have revolutionised travel. Focusing primarily but not exclusively on marine navigation, the author weaves a fascinating course through the successes and failures of mankind's quest to explore his world. The result is a thoroughly entertaining and informative work which has no rival.

Imray, Laurie, Norie & Wilson Ltd Channel Islands, Cherbourg Peninsula & North

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis revision of the RCC Pilotage Foundation''s pilot updates the combined volume for this area which encompasses the Channel Islands and extends from St Vaast La Hougue on the east of the Cherbourg peninsula, and works westwards along the Normandy and Brittany coasts to Ouessant. Coverage includes the Plateau des Roches Douvres as well as detailed sections on the navigable rivers. The navigator benefits enormously from the painstaking approach with which Peter Carnegie has documented his own explorations of these, his home waters. His numerous annotated photographs and the many accompanying charts detail the network of transits between the off-lying rocks and islands of the region. Waypoints are used judiciously to further inform, but the emphasis remains on time-proven and trusted methods of safe navigation in these waters of high tidal range and fast-moving currents. The Channel Islands, Normandy and Brittany coasts can seem a daunting sailing area for those unaccustomed to their ways, but 'Carnegie's book provides reassurance and so much practical advice that anyone using it will feel confident of success.'' (Yachting Monthly). It is the definitive pilot for anyone interested in the challenge of exploring the less frequently used passages and anchorages.
