Pen & Sword Books Ltd English Electric Type 2 BoBo Baby Deltic
Book SynopsisThe British Railways Pilot Scheme' orders of 1955 included ten English Electric Type 2 diesel-electric locomotives deploying Napier Deltic' engines. These locomotives, more colloquially known as the Baby Deltics', were introduced into traffic during 1959 for use on the Eastern Region of British Railways. This book looks at the history of the Class 23s, making extensive use of available but previously unpublished archive material, covering their introduction, technical idiosyncrasies, appearance design and performance. Issues with the original Deltic' engines were ultimately dealt with via a major rehabilitation exercise during the 1963-65 period; whilst various re-engining options were considered , including a new U' series English Electric high-speed engine design, the original Napier engines were ultimately retained. The work involved in the whole rehabilitation process is discussed in detail using internal English Electric archive material and forms a central focus of research. The

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Yamaha the New Dawn
Book SynopsisIn the early 1960s, Japanese firm Yamaha, previously known as a musical instrument maker, took their first faltering steps into the arena of top flight motorcycle racing. They were comparative latecomers in this world, but soon made stars of riders like Phil Read and Bill Ivy. Their two-stroke engines developed quickly, and within a few short years they were challenging rivals Honda for the top places in the world's most prestigious race, the Isle of Man TT. By the early 1970s, Yamaha had emerged from the shadow of their competitors to dominate Grand Prix motorcycle sport with their TZ models. More than this though, Yamaha democratised racing by building a machine that was both capable of winning, and also within the reach of any aspiring motorcycle racer. The engine was so versatile and so effective that it even lent itself to powering three wheeled machines, and a clutch of sidecar World Championships also fell to Yamaha as a result. International Marine Publishing Co The Marlinspike Sailor
Book SynopsisHervey Garrett Smith was the foremost marine illustrator of the 1950s and 1960s, and his wonderful drawings of traditional ropework quickly propelled The Marlinspike Sailor to cult classic status when it was published in 1956. With the addition of a section on modern, synthetic rope in the 1970s, its popularity has continued undiminished to this day. It teaches a few basic knots--the bowline, sheet bend, and rolling hitch, among others--and splices in three-strand and braided rope. But its real business is decorative rope and canvaswork--the traditional arts of the sailor--and here it has no equal. For a rope mat, a rope ladder, a sea chest, a ditty bag, a canvas bucket, a mast boot, and the best-looking rope fenders or heaving line in the marina, this is the book of choice.Trade Review"[Smith's] original illustrations are a marvel of clarity and charm." Pen & Sword Books Ltd The Kent East Sussex Railway 19742004
Book SynopsisOver thirty years ago Nick Pallant told the story of the struggle to save one of Britain's best loved heritage railways in Holding the Line Preserving the Kent & East Sussex Railway (Alan Sutton Publishing). That book concluded its detailed coverage with the partial reopening of the K&ESR in 1974. This new account continues the story over the thirty years which followed. The first 12 chapters mainly rely on secondary sources, particularly the K&ESR's house journal, the Tenterden Terrier. Later chapters describe the years after he returned as a volunteer following over two decades as an 'armchair' member and includes his subsequent experiences as a K&ESR employee and Company Secretary. The key points in the story are the extensions to the line which followed the reopening of a short section in 1974. There is also coverage of the scheme to rebuild the 'lost' section between Bodiam and the national network at Robertsbridge. The growth of passenger traffic is detailed along with all t

This book cover the years 1923 to 2023 describes how the Great Eastern Section of the London and North Eastern Railway was transformed from being something of a backwater during the inter war years to being very much at the forefront of modernisation under British Railways. Within the book will be found how the Great Eastern Section coped with the threat of road competition during the inter war years, its involvement in the Second World War and how under British Railways it came to be seen the epitome of modernisation beginning with the arrival of the arrival of the Britannia Class locomotives in 1951 and culminating the complete elimination of steam power in the East of England at the end of 1963. The book describes the impact of the Beeching Report on the former Great Eastern. It

Pen & Sword Books Ltd The Light Railway
Book SynopsisThe light Railways Act 1896 marked the final phase in the development of the traditional railway in Britain, being designed to open up rural areas of Britain that had been bypassed by the larger railway companies. The promoting and construction of light railways allowed many parts of Britain and Ireland, to have an outlet to the outside world and major cities, which previously they had not enjoyed. The Light Railway is not designed to be a definitive history, but a pictorial tribute to the brave attempt to develop a rural network of lines to serve some of the areas of the British Isles and Ireland that had sadly been neglected by the large main line companies throughout the initial and later railway development period from 1825 to 1896. This volume looks at the railways themselves, motive power and infrastructure that made up these small but important lines, promoted by our Victorian and Edwardian ancestors.

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Paddington to Birkenhead
Book SynopsisOne of the most diverse, complex and thus most interesting railway routes in the land. It set out as part of Brunel's Great Western Railway plan to cover the country in Broad Gauge tracks but, faced with competition from its great rival, the London and North Western Railway, the Broad Gauge never got beyond Wolverhampton and eventually succumbed to the four feet, eight and a half inches proponents. However, by then the GWR had established itself as the principal provider of passenger and freight trains between London and Birkenhead, on the west bank of the Mersey, facing, and on occasions, snarling at, the LNWR opposite. Its most powerful locomotives, the Kings, powered its expresses from 1927 until the end of steam as far as Birmingham and Wolverhampton, whilst Stanier Pacifics worked those between Euston and Liverpool Lime Street. The route passes through the manicured fields and hunting country of the Chilterns, then plunges into that was once the deeply industrial, polluted but sti

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Londons Underground Since 1985
Book SynopsisJIM BLAKE's second volume of his photographs featuring the London Underground cover the period from 1985, shortly after the Thatcher regime's destruction of London Transport and its re-birth as London Underground Ltd., to 2021 when the Northern Line gained its new branch from Kennington to Battersea Power Station. This was a turbulent time in the system's history, encompassing the withdrawal of the last pre-war passenger rolling stock (in 1988) and then the abolition of two-person operated trains at the beginning of 2000. With the exception of the Waterloo & City Line, which was transferred from British Rail to London Underground in the 1990s, all Underground lines are covered together with the rolling stock operating them. Jim's photographs concentrate on the older types. What is very striking in them is how the system seemed to be going downhill rapidly during the Thatcher years when this survey begins - plagued by the curse of graffiti and liberally littered thanks to cuts in

Originally labelled Christmas-cracker trash by retailers and shopkeepers, the small-scale 1-75 series soon began to see unprecedented worldwide sales in the 1950s. Pen & Sword Books Ltd The Wantage Tramway
Book SynopsisThe Wantage Tramway, part tramway and part light railway, had many claims to fame. It was Britain's first tramway to use steam traction and had a fascinating and eclectic collection of locomotives and rolling stock throughout its short life which gave the company a look all of its own. The company's unique history created a legend which still endures to this day. The unique company had its origins in the nineteenth century when the Great Western Railway's route to Bristol bypassed Wantage and local people gathered together to form a company to build a link to the local main line. The company's relationship with its bigger neighbour was often friendly, sometimes stormy, but always close despite the tramway company's fierce independence. The company was an important addition to Wantage's transport network although not everyone agreed! This new history of the company, based upon primary research, explores how the company was formed, tells the stories of some of the people who worked for

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Railways in Victorian London
Book SynopsisLondon has always been a major transport hub. Indeed, it owes its origins to being the location in ancient times of what was then the lowest bridging point of the River Thames. From the 1830s to 1914 it became the focal point of Britain's railway system. In that time a railway network of extraordinary complexity developed, serving the needs of London's citizens and providing access for huge numbers of visitors of all kinds. Here we consider some of the ways in which the railways contributed to London's transformation into a world city, perhaps THE world city of the Victorian and Edwardian period. With an emphasis on the social impact of the railways, the book examines, among other issues, how they contributed to the growth of suburbia, helped to provide London with vital supplies of food and fuel, the way in which the Underground made it quicker and easier to move about, produced huge, luxurious hotels and spectacular bridges and destroyed some of the capital's worst slums. London has

London Publishing Partnership Transport For Humans: Are We Nearly There Yet?
Book SynopsisEngineers plan transport systems, people use them. But the ways in which an engineer measures success - speed, journey time, efficiency - are often not the way that passengers think about a good trip. We are not cargo. We choose how and when to travel, influenced not only by speed and time but by habit, status, comfort, variety - and many other factors that engineering equations don't capture at all. As we near the practical, physical limits of speed, capacity and punctuality, the greatest hope for a brighter future lies in adapting transport to more human wants and needs. Behavioural science has immense potential to improve the design of roads, railways, planes and pavements - as well as the ways in which we use them - but only when we embrace the messier reality of transport for humans. This is the moment. Climate change, the coronavirus pandemic and changing work-life priorities have shaken up long-held assumptions. There is a new way forward. This book maps out how to design transport for humans.Trade Review"Impish yet wise, this book is packed with fresh ideas. Transport would be so much better if even half of them were embraced by planners, politicians and designers. Read, learn and laugh - I did." Tim Harford, author of How To Make the World Add Up; "This book makes a plea for the application of behavioural science (aka common sense) to transport planning. It offers a way out of two traps: the belief that speed is the only purpose of travel and that everyone is motivated in the same way. It is bursting with ideas to make transport work for real people, and while some of the ideas might prove unsuccessful, all of them are worth trying." Bridget Rosewell, Commissioner, National Infrastructure Commission; "A very welcome book that shows how the insights of behavioural science could allow for the range of human attributes to be encompassed by the transport system in the face of economists' and engineers' conventional utilitarian thinking." David Metz, honorary professor in the Centre for Transport Studies at UCL and former Chief Scientist at the Department for Transport; "Transport is desperately in need of good ideas and innovation. This highly original and entertaining book is filled with both." Christian Wolmar, award-winning writer and broadcaster specializing in transport.

Key Publishing Ltd Class 67s
Book SynopsisIn the late 1990s, English, Welsh & Scottish Railway (EWS) ordered a large fleet of 250 Class 66 locomotives to replace a variety of freight locomotive types that had been in service with British Rail for many years. However, EWS also required something with a bit more performance, as well as electric train supply, for hauling charter and mail trains, which were still quite common at that time. A partnership with Royal Mail resulted in the Class 67s moving post around the country. When Royal Mail ended that arrangement in 2004, the Class 67s were pushed into other areas of work, including light freight and occasional passenger services, as well as continuing with charters. Although the design of the Class 67s has not been to everyone's taste, they do at least add a bit of variety to the modern scene. During the 20 years that they have been in service, they have been very reliable with only occasional failures. Key Publishing Ltd Class 66/0
Book SynopsisIn the late 1990s and early 2000s, most of the current locomotives in use on the national network were becoming very tired and evermore unreliable. It was during this time that EWS took over the large bulk of freight operations in the UK, and they quickly realised that major changes were needed. In 1996, they ordered a whole fleet of 250 Class 66 locos, which followed on from the same basic design as the earlier Class 59, privately owned, locos used for the Mendip aggregates traffic. The Class 66 was intended for more general use, rather than being used for just one specific purpose though. They have now been in service for over 20 years and have proved very reliable and capable locos. This volume covers the Class 66/0s from their early days up to the present at various locations around the UK.
