Orthodoxy continues to be a subject of enormous interest among western Christians, and the author believes that an understanding of its standpoint is necessary before the Roman Catholic and Protestant Churches can be reunited. In this revised and updated edition he explains the Orthodox views on such widely ranging matters as Ecumenical Councils, Sacraments, Free Will, Purgatory, the Papacy and the relation between the different Orthodox Churches.

Book SynopsisThe Philokalia is a foundational collection of texts written between the fourth and the fifteenth centuries by spiritual masters of the Orthodox Christian tradition.First published in Greek in 1782, translated into Slavonic and later into Russian, The Philokalia has exercised an influence far greater than that of any book other than the Bible in the recent history of the Orthodox Church, and it continues to be read more and more widely.Only a selection of texts from The Philokalia has hitherto been available in English. This is the first complete translation into English from the original Greek in five volumes, the first of which was published by Faber in 1979. It is concerned with themes of universal importance: how we may develop our inner powers and awake from illusion; how we may overcome fragmentation and achieve spiritual wholeness; how we may attain the life of contemplative stillness and union with God.As in the first four

Book SynopsisThe writings in this volume cast a glimmer of light upon the emerging traditions and organization of the infant church, during an otherwise little-known period of its development. A selection of letters and small-scale theological treatises from a group known as the Apostolic Fathers, several of whom were probably disciples of the Apostles, they provide a first-hand account of the early Church and outline a form of early Christianity still drawing on the theology and traditions of its parent religion, Judaism. Included here are the first Epistle of Bishop Clement of Rome, an impassioned plea for harmony; The Epistle of Polycarp; The Epistle of Barnabas; The Didache; and the Seven Epistles written by Ignatius of Antioch—among them his moving appeal to the Romans that they grant him a martyr's death. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. 10 in stock

Book SynopsisWritten close to the end of the great writer’s life, Fyodor Dostoevsky’s short story The Dream of a Ridiculous Man tells of a transformation of the heart and a journey from despair to joy: a joy that can be known by all through the experience of God that transcends a simply rational discourse. In this eye opening literary study, the title character and his spiritual metamorphosis are examined in depth in light of the ancient concept of Nous as it developed from the Greek philosophers to the Christian fathers. By comparing the “Ridiculous Man” to similar characters in Dostoevsky’s corpus, the author shows how an Orthodox Christian understanding of the Nous underpins Dostoevsky’s own anthropology and how his literary works in turn guide the reader toward a truer vision of humanity.Table of ContentsINTRODUCTION PART 1: THE HISTORY OF THE CONCEPT OF NOUS FROM PRE-SOCRATIC PHILOSOPHY TO THE CHRISTIAN ERA Chapter 1: The Nous in Hellenic Philosophy: Anaxagoras to Plato Chapter 2: The Nous in Hellenic Philosophy; Aristotle to Plotinus Chapter 3: A Transition from Hellenic Philosophy to Christianity Chapter 4: The Incarnation and Deification in Early Patristic Thought Chapter 5: The Heart and the Nous in Patristic Thought Chapter 6: Purification of the Nous Chapter 7: A Move Away from Noetic Perception PART 2: THE NOUS AND DOSTOEVSKY Chapter 8: Some Biographical Details Chapter 9: The Dream of a Ridiculous Man: A Synopsis and Analysis of the Story Chapter 10: Examples of Other “Ridiculous Men” in Dostoevsky's Novels PART 3: THE NOUS IN CONTEMPORARY THOUGHT Chapter 11: References to the Unnamed Nous Chapter 12: A Renewed Interest in Deification Chapter 13: Contemporary Orthodox Writers on the Nous CONCLUSION Acknowledgments APPENDIX: The Dream of a Ridiculous Man by F.M. • The Ecclesial Crisis in Ukraine: and its Solution

Holy Trinity Publications The Ecclesial Crisis in Ukraine: and its Solution

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the autumn of 2018 the Russian Orthodox Church broke communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople following the latter Synods announcement of their intention to create an autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine. (OCU) In December of that year a formal council was convened in Kiev and this new ecclesial body was created from two Ukrainian groups previously considered schismatic by all of the Orthodox churches worldwide. All of this transpired without any attempt by the Ecumenical Patriarchate to seek a consensus of all the Orthodox churches before embarking this course of action.More than two years later the newly created OCU remains unrecognised by the overwhelming majority of the world's Orthodox believers notwithstanding that it has in that time been been recognised as Orthodox by the Patriarchate of Alexandra and the Churches of Cyprus and Greece. But even this recognition has not been without significant dissenting voices. One of these is the Abbot of the renowned Kykkos monastery in Cyprus, Metropolitan Nikephoros. In this pithy text he eloquently explains why the actions of the Ecumenical Patriarchate have created a schism in the Orthodox Church worldwide and how in turn they reflect the promotion of a new ecclesiology that distorts the traditional understanding of the Orthodox Church as headed only by Christ Himself. He is clear that the only road to healing and unending schism is a return to a form of inter-Orthodox relations which respects both conciliarity and hierarchy. In doing this he stresses his utmost respect for the historical place of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and the hope that it will turn back from the path it is currently on to resume its rightful place in the plurality of the Orthodox Church. This is essential reading for all Orthodox believers to better understand what the Ukrainian crisis means for the future of their Church. It will also assist others to see beyond the characterization of the crisis as a political event in the context of relations between Russia and the West. It makes clear that at its heart this is an ecclesiological dispute calling out for a conciliar solution.

  • She Who Loved Much: The Sinful Woman in St Ephrem

Holy Trinity Publications She Who Loved Much: The Sinful Woman in St Ephrem

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Orthodox Church understands the Holy Scriptures to be the fountainhead of Tradition. The stories read in the Bible are commonly explored and elaborated in greater depth in liturgical hymns, homilies, and patristic writings. Such is the case with the account found in St Luke’s gospel of a sinful woman who anoints Christ with precious oil shortly before his Passion and Crucifixion. The woman’s story is taken up in the liturgical tradition of the Orthodox Church in Holy Week, where she is held up as an example of repentance and unconstrained love. In this in-depth but readable study the biblical accounts are elaborated through both the liturgical and oratorical tradition of the Church, as found primarily in Greek and Syriac manuscripts, with particular attention given to the former texts, too often overshadowed by the latter. Previously inaccessible texts of late antiquity, such as homilies by Amphilochius of Iconium and Ephrem Graecus, are found here in English for the first time, together with fresh English renderings of other sermons. This sharply honed and well-constructed work will engage all who encounter the story of the sinful woman in the living tradition of worship in the Orthodox Church, as well as those who are introduced to her through Scripture, liturgical poetry, or scholarly consideration. The present work unveils the intricate nature of the tradition of the Church, which gives greater scope and application to the biblical record through its hymnography and oratory.Table of ContentsPREFATORY MATERIAL DEDICATION PREFACE ABBREVIATIONS SHORT TITLES AND A NOTE ON TEXTS . 3 in stock

Book SynopsisA fresh translation of the Pistis Sophia from the Coptic and a discussion of its historical setting.Sophia is one of the great symbols of the divine feminine in world civilization and the personification of divine Wisdom. In Gnosticism, the secret teaching of ancient Christianity, she represents the consciousness that all of us share, but which became trapped in the material world as a result of the Fall. One of the most sublime Gnostic texts is the Pistis Sophia or “Faith Wisdom,” a great allegory in which the resurrected Christ tells how he freed the divine Sophia from her imprisonment to powers of spiritual wickedness. In this profound yet accessible work, Violet MacDermot provides a fresh translation of the Pistis Sophia from the Coptic and discusses it in its historical setting. She also shows how the story of Sophia is one in which we too can share in spiritual liberation. Her engaging discussion relates this work not only to ancient teachings, but to the thought of C G Jung, Emanuel Swedenborg and the Kabbala.Trade Review'The historical overview is selective but carefully balanced and inspiring, a fine introduction to the passage of the subject and its key proponents through history. To students of gnosticism it provides a honed synopsis of the subject as well as the translation of important source material. To the un-initiated, it is also a fine introduction and could inspire further exploration of the subject.'-- Oliver Perceval, Light

Book Synopsis"Thou hast redeemed us from the curse of the Law by Thy precious Blood. By being nailed to the Cross and pierced with the Spear, Thou hast poured immortality on mankind. O our Saviour, glory to Thee." - Troparion for Holy FridayAtonement is a contested but inescapable term in contemporary English-language theological discussion. The doctrine of atonement has received little attention in Orthodox Christian circles since the work of Fr Georges Florovsky, who labored to clarify and promulgate the Orthodox teaching on atonement on the basis of his theological leitmotifs of neo-patristic synthesis and encounter with the West. Florovsky saw the doctrine of the person of Christ as the key to apprehending the pattern and the unity of God’s redemptive work. Hence he always sought to follow the Church Fathers in weaving together the themes of creation and fall, incarnation and atonement, deification and redemption, liturgy and asceticism, in the variegated yet seamless robe of true theology. The present volume is inspired by Florovsky’s legacy. It is composed of two parts. The first is a collection of papers on atonement by contemporary scholars from a patristic symposium in honor of Florovsky held at Princeton Theological Seminary and Princeton University in 2011. The second part is a collection of writings on atonement by Florovsky himself, including previously unpublished manuscripts and other works otherwise hard to access. This book offers incisive and informed neo-patristic voices to any contemporary discussion of atonement, thus responding to the perennial legacy and task to which Fr Georges Florovsky exhorted Orthodox theological reflection.Table of ContentsPreface Abbreviations Part I: Proceedings of the First Annual Symposium of the Fr Georges Florovsky Orthodox Theological Society at Princeton Introduction Marcus Plested A Sacrifice for Life: Atonement in the Orthodox Liturgical Tradition Irenei Steenberg Irenaeus on “Atonement” John Behr Creation and Salvation in St Athanasius of Alexandria Khaled Anatolios Theology of Salvation in St Gregory the Theologian John McGuckin Atonement in the Ascetic Fathers Alexis Torrance In Ligno Crucis: Atonement in the Theology of Fr Georges Florovsky Matthew Baker Part II: Georges Florovsky on Atonement, Unpublished and Republished Materials Introduction Matthew Baker and Seraphim Danckaert In Ligno Crucis: Ad Lectorem Georges Florovsky In Ligno Crucis (A Summary from Sweden) Georges Florovsky Redemption (Précis of a Planned Book) Georges Florovsky The Stumbling-Block Georges Florovsky Contributors

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisConflict or concord? Histories of Islam from its early seventh century beginnings in Arabia often portray its explosive growth into the wider Middle East as a story of struggle and conquest of the Christian people of Greater Syria, Palestine and Egypt. Alternatively these histories suggest that as often as not the conquerors were welcomed by the conquered and their existing monotheistic faiths of Christianity and Judaism tolerated and even allowed to flourish. In this short but in depth survey of the almost nine centuries that passed from the beginning of the spread of Islam up to the Ottoman Turkish conquest of Syria and Egypt beginning in 1516, Constantin Panchenko offers a more complex portrayal that opens up fresh vistas of understanding of these centuries focusing on the impact that the coming of Islam had on the Orthodox Christian communities of the Middle East and in particular the interplay of their Greek cultural heritage and experience of increasing Arabization. This work is drawn from the author's much larger work, Arab Orthodox Christians Under the Ottomans, being an updated and expanded version of the first chapter of that book which set the historical context for the period after 1516. It will deepen the readers understanding both of the history of the Middle East in these centuries and of how the faith of Orthodox Christians in these lands is lived today.Table of ContentsForeword The Arab Conquest: Christians in the Caliphate. Book SynopsisThe Church is commonly spoken of as an institutional reality, but much less frequently recognized as a spiritual and heavenly reality called by God “to make disciples of all nations.” (Mt. 28:19) This modest work furthers the development of a structured and integrated Christian Orthodox political thought, whereby the Church is neither sidelined as having no relevance to this present life, nor dominated by temporal questions or popular movements at the expense of its eternal salvific mission. The author seeks to ground the mission of the Church in the present world both on an understanding of God as Trinity and in Her mission to baptize diverse cultures. To do this effectively the Church must recognize and adapt to local and contemporary political and social trends and patterns. It must exemplify the Gospel as a way of communal and social life, not allowing itself to be reduced to an impersonal ideology manifest within the sphere of either imagination, ideology, or a private individualistic existence.Drawing upon this philosophy he offers proposals for how the Church could view questions of both domestic politics and international relations with a view to bringing the world into the Kingdom of God. He also suggests specific steps that could be taken to heal and strengthen inter-Orthodox relations, addressing in particular the canonical challenges of the Orthodox diaspora and tensions between the Greek and Slavic components of the Church.Though these specific proposals will by no means enjoy universal acceptance, they will serve as a springboard for further dialogue as the Orthodox world seeks to apply these principles in all nations, no matter their current political circumstances.Extracts from The Bases of the Social Concept of the Russian Orthodox Church are also included as an appendix to aid in further reflection on the questions raised by this book.Table of ContentsUnedited TOC INTRODUCTION The inspiration behind this book Aims of the Book Outline of the Book CHURCH AND WORLD Brief History of the Church The Church is the pre-fall world The fallen world is the same as the pre-fall world only now under demonic influence The relationship between the Church and the world after the fall Unto-the-world integration v Of-the-world secularization CHURCH AND NATION The nation as a post-fall phenomenon Nationalism as a post-fall ideology Ideology as division and heresy Sanctification and self-transcendence of the nation The Mission of the Jewish Nation to the World How Christ viewed his own nation The fall out of Christ with the national establishment How the Apostle Paul viewed his own nation The national self-transcendence of the Greek nation for the sake of a Christian World Christian Orthodoxy vis-a-vis national power, resistance, and liberation Conclusion: cohabitation, adoption and ecumenization of the nation by the Church within the Church, and through the Church CHURCH AND STATE The state as a post-fall phenomenon B. Book SynopsisOrthodox theology is intimately linked to spiritual experience:it has a very different meaning to the present usage of this word coming from academia. The scientific methods developed in the West since the seventeenth century can of of benefit in many regards, but without strong roots in the Orthodox tradition theology risks being "eaten up" by the human sciences. These roots are in the mystical tradition of the Church as passed down from the the beginning and expressed in the lives of saints, iconography etc. Thus this work has both a theoretical and a practical scope, of relevance to all Christians.Table of ContentsForeword INTRODUCTION Chapter I. Book SynopsisOne of the most important and accessible texts of Eastern Orthodox Christian teaching on the spiritual life, this book draws upon the ascetic and mystical doctrine of the Greek Fathers and greats of the Orthodox Christian church.Trade ReviewPeople often ask me about books. The one I've been recommending most in the last few years is The Arena, by St. Ignatius Brianchaninov, a Russian Orthodox bishop of the last century who was canonized in 1988. Although written by a rigorous monk for fellow monastics, all Christians possessing the courage and discipline to engage this book with attention and obedience may study it with great profit. --Fr. First published in Greek in 1782, translated into Slavonic and later into Russian, The Philokalia has had a decisive influence upon the Orthodox Church during the last two centuries, and it continues to be read more and more widely. The Philokalia is devoted to themes of universal significance: how we may develop our inner powers and awake from illusion; how we may overcome fragmentation and achieve wholeness; how we may attain contemplative stillness and union with God.This is the first complete translation into English. It is made from the original Greek, and is to be completed in five volumes. The third volume contains works dating from the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Book SynopsisTrade Review[Creation as Sacrament] should be read by everyone – undergraduate student, graduate student, scholar, layperson, and scientist – who hopes to effect the 'revolutionary reformation' that leads to reconciliation, transfiguration, and resurrection. * Modern Theology *This collection of essays is an engaging and accessible introduction to Eastern Orthodox ecotheological spirituality by a leading theologian. * Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and Theology *Stimulating... Excellent... a powerful and persuasive exploration. * Theology *Chryssavgis offers a welcome and teachable text in ecospirituality and sacramental imagination. * Reading Religion *In this timely book, John Chryssavgis offers a sacramental account of the natural world as a creation that finds it true identity in Christ as the body of Christ. It is rare to find a book that is attentive to the sciences, theologically rich, and able to speak practically to some of the major challenges that we are currently facing in this world. Creation as Sacrament succeeds on all these fronts and should have pride of place on the bookshelf of anyone interested in the doctrine of creation. There is no question in my mind that this is one of the best books available on theology and ecology. * Andrew Torrance, University of St. Andrews, UK; co-editor of Knowing Creation: Perspectives from Theology, Philosophy and Science *It is difficult in a few lines to do justice to this beautifully written and inspirational book. The author weaves together a rich tapestry of ideas on the theme of creation as sacrament drawn from Orthodox traditions and practices in a way that can inspire real hope in the transfiguration of the shattered image of the world around us. The reader is taken into a profound recognition of different aspects of the mystery of divine revelation that is both revealed and concealed at the same time. The frank acknowledgement of human sin sits alongside a call to asceticism and gratitude. This is not just about promoting a change in attitude to ecological responsibility in the light of scientific knowledge, but a vision of the church that is both ancient but fresh in its relevance for our world today. This is theological writing at its best: profound, informed, inspiring and relevant, not just for those in the Orthodox Church, but for many others as well. * Celia Deane-Drummond, University of Notre Dame, USA; author of A Primer in Ecotheology: Theology for a Fragile Earth *Long before the current ecological crisis, the theology of Eastern Christianity had developed a sophisticated and harmonious picture of the interweaving of spiritual and material reality in a universe animated at every point by the radiant, creative agency of God. For human beings to flourish as God intends, they need to learn how to see and attend to this mystery; the contemplation of the divine can grow in us only as we learn to recognise this uncreated act as reflected in all we encounter. John Chryssavgis has played a major role in articulating the resources of Orthodox theology in tackling our environmental catastrophe, and this excellent book could not be more timely as we seek for a spirituality that will genuinely transform our sinful and mindless ravaging of God’s world. * Dr. Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury and currently Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge, UK; author of Christ, The Heart of Creation *John Chyrssavgis’s capacious, reflective book is a wonderful, rigorous, and accessible meditation on ecological theology as intrinsic to Orthodox Christian thought and practice over the centuries. His theological finesse is unique and unparalleled in mediating Orthodox thought between the currents of contemporary environmentalism and theological shoals of the past. Readers of all levels will benefit from his reflections on how transfiguration, sacrament, and spirituality in Orthodox theology resist any blithe, firm distinctions between humans and nature. Eminently readable and assignable, this text is also guaranteed to become a staple in courses on Christian ecotheology. * Christiana Zenner, Fordham University, USA; author of Just Water: Theology, Ethics, and the Global Water Crisis *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Foreword Introduction: Restoring the Shattered Image of the World Section I: Theory and Theology 1. Book SynopsisExamines the aesthetic principles and spiritual operations at work in Hagia Sophia. Drawing on art and architectural history, liturgy, musicology, and acoustics, explores the Byzantine paradigm of animation.Trade Review“The interdisciplinary methods of exploration and the development of digital technology in the cultural heritage preservation of the Hagia Sophia’s aural and visual environment in Pentcheva’s book are intriguing, well-researched, and rich to a depth previously unexplored. Hagia Sophia: Sound, Space, and Spirit in Byzantium is worth adding to any collection exploring new innovations in archeoacoustical, art historical, and architectural research in Byzantine or medieval periods.”—Marianne R. Williams ARLIS/NA Reviews“Evocatively rendered in careful prose, new photography, and recorded sound, this synthetic account breathes new life into a remarkable, elusive monument. Highly recommended.”—M. Rautman Choice“Reminds us not only how much the study of aurality in Byzantine studies has yet to offer but also what the hidden aspects of Hagia Sophia might still yield.”—Mati Meyer caa.reviews“Pentcheva’s book is a bold and at times thrilling attempt to decipher the building as living architecture.”—Amy Papalexandrou Speculum“This handsome volume reflects the author’s deep and sustained engagement of more than a decade with the sensory world of Byzantine worshippers as they experienced objects, ritual performance, and Hagia Sophia’s architectural setting.”—Nina Macaraig Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians“In this forceful study we come to understand how sound and image come alive in architecture. Hagia Sophia does important work in paving the way towards a multisensorial analysis of architecture that does not prioritize or privilege one sense over another nor flatten distinctions between the senses.”—Emanuela Vai Art History“This erudite, highly original book explores the ways in which the sixth-century church of Hagia Sophia engaged all the senses in a rich and dynamic exchange of air, sound, fragrance, movement, and light between heaven and earth to create an all-enveloping spiritual experience for the worshipper. Using sources ranging from modern acoustic science to sixth-century poetry, Pentcheva establishes a fluid, multisensory, kinetic interpretive model that will transform our understanding of Byzantine sacred space.”—Deborah Howard, coauthor of Sound and Space in Renaissance Venice“Pentcheva’s Hagia Sophia dares us to think creatively about the materials we study and all those things that we cannot definitively prove or validate within conventional art historical frameworks. It is a book that glimmers and murmurs to us about the past, densely filling in our mental images of these spaces and rituals with smells and sounds.”—Roland Betancourt Art Bulletin“Hagia Sophia: Sound, Space, and Spirit in Byzantium is, simply put, an extraordinary achievement, an unprecedented exploration of the liturgical experience afforded by the Great Church of Constantinople in its nine-century career (532-1453 CE) as a Christian holy place.”—Brian A. Book SynopsisIn many ways, we seem to be living in wintry times at present in the Western world. In this new book, Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury and a noted scholar of Eastern Christianity, introduces us to some aspects and personalities of the Orthodox Christian world, from the desert contemplatives of the fourth century to philosophers, novelists and activists of the modern era, that suggest where we might look for fresh light and warmth. He shows how this rich and diverse world opens up new ways of thinking about spirit and body, prayer and action, worship and social transformation, which go beyond the polarisations we take for granted. Taking in the world of the great spiritual anthology, the Philokalia, and the explorations of Russian thinkers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, discussing the witness of figures like Maria Skobtsova, murdered in a German concentration camp for her defence of Jewish refugees, and the challenging theologies of modern Greek thinkers lTrade ReviewThe language is precise and exact, yet also evocative and elegant. * Church Times *An austere read, reflecting a lifetime’s intellectual engagement with Orthodoxy. It is at the same time full of warmth. Williams' account of holy folly is wonderful. * The Tablet *There is no theological writer in English whose prose is more lucid, more crystalline, more careful, than Lord Williams of Oystermouth, known more widely as Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury from 2002 to 2012 ... Looking East in Winter is a brilliant exploration of modern Orthodox theology ... Archbishop Rowan has completed another remarkable book, the reading of which is itself a meditative and nourishing experience. * Medium *
