Book SynopsisAndras Schiff is one of the most important pianists of our time. This stimulating account of his life and work, told in two parts, takes readers on an intimate journey from Schiff''s childhood in Hungary through to the present day.In conversationw with Martin Meyer, Schiff discusses a diverse range of topics from his experiences with anti-Semitism and communist rule to his musical training with maestros such as Pál Kadosa and Ferenc Rados, as well as his thoughts on playing techniques and musical interpretation. In a collection of Schiff''s writings we are enthralled by a guided tour of Bach''s ''Goldberg'' Variations, sobered by Schiff''s public defiance against nationalistic and racist attitudes - to the extent that he refused to perform in Haider''s Austria or Orban''s Hungary - and delighted by the playful ''Ten Commandments'' for concertgoers.More than a memoir, this is a seminal compilation of the thoughts and experiences of one of the greatest musiciansTrade ReviewAndras Schiff proves just as articulate, as cultured and as provocative a musical thinker as he is at the piano throughout this highly recommendable book -- Jed Distler * GRAMOPHONE *Schiff proves just as thoughtful and appealing a character on the page as he does on the concert platform . . . Schiff writes with warmth and eloquence . . . a compelling read, offering rich insight into the life and ideas of one of the great musicians of our time * BBC Music Magazine *

Faber Music Ltd The Essential Film Collection
Book SynopsisSometimes pianists would love to play the 'pops' they enjoy, but finding quality arrangements that work for the instrument can be a real challenge. The author takes classic film songs from across the decades and makes well-crafted and satisfying arrangements for intermediate pianists.Trade ReviewThe arrangements are satisfyingly effective, and provide ideal browsing/alternative material for the older teenager or adult learner. Piano Professional, Spring 2009 This is a stupendous collection of 28 film classics arranged for piano solo, ranging from Lawrence of Arabia to Pirates of the Caribbean, The Magnificent Seven to Ghostbusters, Harry Potter to The Exorcist and Chariots of Fire to The English Patient. I have to say that once I started playing, I could not stop. The same thing happened when I gave the book to a reluctant sight reader for some quick practice; i had to shut it and promise more later. Certain films and film music tend to evoke times and occasions in our lives and as my pupil and I played through our favourites we recalled the film and the circumstances under which we had seen it. She also commented that each arrangement 'worked' and sounded genuine. The writing of some were more richly orchestral (Gladiator and Blade Runner), others were just fun (The Flintstones and the James Bond Theme). The arrangements are approximately Grade 3-6 standard and satisfyingly, they all sound absolutely true to the originals. There is something for every pianist here. While it is important and rewarding to master playing all styles of music and none should be neglected, pieces in popular styles are useful, in that they very often engage the struggling pupil, give street cred to the teenager and provide relaxation and enjoyment to pianists of all ages. The very best will give both pleasure and progress. Music Teacher, January 2009 Arranged for intermediate piano solo, this is as fine a compendium of good tunes for the flowering learner (or terminal intermediate) as any available. Mi Pro Magazine, June 2008Table of ContentsLord Of The Rings (Main Theme: The Ring Goes South); Star Wars (Imperial March Theme); Gladiator (Main Theme: The Battle); Harry Potter (Hedwig's Theme); Chariots of Fire (Main Theme); The Lion King (Song: Circle Of Life); The Great Escape (Main Theme); The English Patient (Main Theme); The Deer Hunter (Theme: Cavatina); Blade Runner (Main Theme): Dances With Wolves (Main Theme); James Bond (Main Theme); James Bond (Goldfinger theme); The Exorcist (Theme: Tubular Bells); The Mission (Theme: Gabriel's Oboe); Lawrence Of Arabia (Main Theme); Midnight Cowboy (Main Theme); Superman (Main Theme); Ghostbusters (Song: Ghostbusters); Batman (Main Theme); The Flintstones (Main Theme); The Wizard Of Oz (Over The Rainbow); Rocky (Main Theme); The Magnificent Seven (Main Theme); American Beauty (Theme: Any Other Name); Pirates Of The Caribbean ('He's A Pirate'); Cinema Paradiso (Main Theme); Jean de Florette (Verdi - La Forza Del Destino)

This book contains over 30 carols for the beginner pianist, featuring a range of techniques and quizzes to support musical development from the very first lessons to Grade 2.Trade Review“…this is a Christmas book with a real difference, including so much more than just the same seasonal classics… The standout feature of so many of these arrangements is that they combine an astute awareness of what really works on the piano, with a solid pedagogic foundation… the pieces are fun to play, sound great, and are educational at the same time… It’s this level of care and planning which elevates Get Set! Piano Christmas Crackers above so many competing books…. In short, the book is chock-full of great ideas, creative approaches, and fun suggestions – all given an engaging and often amusing festive twist.” ~ Andrew Eales (pianist, teacher and writer), Pianodao “I have a few treasured and very dog-eared Christmas music books for myself and my pupils. This bumper offering – over 30 carols for the beginner to Grade 2 level pianist – is about to join that collection.” ~ Fiona Lau, Music Teacher Magazine “Each carol is preceded by suggestions for learning activities associated with the pieces, and there are plentiful quizzes, tips, games, facts and other suggestions too. The University of Chicago Press Beethovens French Piano
Book SynopsisTrade Review“In this one-of-a-kind book, Beghin presents a detailed study of Beethoven’s Erard piano and its significance for Beethoven’s music. This is a tour de force of organological research. Beghin’s association with the Orpheus Institute has given him the resources to conduct extensive research on a replica of the Erard instrument under controlled conditions. Beethoven’s French Piano achieves something truly remarkable, inviting us to rethink the now-receding paradigm of absolute instrumental music—serenely detached from any dependence on the physical world—through some of the very music on which that paradigm depends.” * Robin Wallace, author of 'Hearing Beethoven: A Story of Musical Loss and Discovery' *“Blending performance research and organology, Beethoven’s French Piano demonstrates how historical instruments can alter our interpretation and appreciation of music from the past. The complex story of Beethoven’s acquisition of and subsequent experimentation with his Erard piano has never been told with such verve and subtlety. Beghin’s insights challenge us to listen anew to many of Beethoven’s keyboard works.” * Robert Adelson, author of 'Erard: A Passion for the Piano' *“Beethoven’s French Piano is a synthesis of historical, organological, stylistic, and aesthetic considerations. Beghin has given us keen insights into the relationship between the acquisition of Beethoven’s Erard and its influence on his musical language. Pianists, historians, and piano builders will be enlightened by this fascinating book.” * Robert Levin, Harvard University * “Expert . . . the book is lavishly illustrated with printed music examples, complex diagrams and pictures.” * BBC Music Magazine *"For their doughty efforts, Tom Beghin and his team of researchers and instrument builders deserve every piano lover's thanks." * International Piano Magazine *"When a leading fortepianist-scholar teams up with a world-renowned piano builder plus experts in various scientific and technical fields, and a group of talented and curious students to investigate every imaginable artistic significance of the Erard fortepiano Beethoven received in 1803, the results are revelatory. . . Beghin exhibits his research discoveries with total commitment, imbuing every moment of his playing with vital conviction to produce a Beethoven unlike any you’ve heard before." * Early Music America *"This significant contribution to historical performance studies and organology offers an extremely detailed examination of Beethoven’s Erard piano and the author's own replication of it . . . Recommended." * Choice *"For those of us who perform, teach, study, and above all, love Beethoven’s piano works, Tom Beghin’s Beethoven’s French Piano is a gift of insight and inspiration." * Quarterly Journal of the Music Library *

Faber Music Ltd UpGrade Pop Piano Grades 01
Book SynopsisOffers the author's take on songs such as Robbie Williams' "Angels", Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust" and James Blunt's "You're beautiful" as well as her own composed pieces.Trade ReviewI have long been a fan of Pam Wedgwood's Up-Grade books, as they appeal to both teachers (pianistic writing) and pupils (popular genres). This is a new addition to the series and includes ten stylish and convincing arrangements by Wedgwood of pop songs ranging from Queen's Another One Bites the Dust to Cannonball, sung by Damien Rice, and the irritating but hugely popular You're Beautiful by James Blunt. There are also five of Wedgwood's own compositions written to her usual high standards in rock, pop and ballad styles. In compiling a volume of pop tune arrangements, there are two dangers: that they will quickly become outdated and that the harmonies will not sound anything like the originals. Wedgwood avoids this by including such classics as Angels (Robbie Williams) and Material Girl (Madonna), as well as Disney's Beauty and the Beast and ABBA's Thank you for the Music, and using true to the original harmonies for each one. This compilation will appeal to all ages but will be especially useful for teenage beginners who will appreciate the street cred these beautifully written and arranged pieces will give them. Music Teacher Magazine, October 2008Table of ContentsAngels (Robbie Williams); Another One Bites The Dust (Queen); Bad Day (Daniel Powter); Beauty And The Beast (Disney); Cannonball (Damien Rice); Castles In The Air (Pam Wedgwood); Catch 22 (Pam Wedgwood); Fill My Little World (The Feeling); I Feel Good (Pam Wedgwood); JCB Song (Nizlopi); Material Girl (Madonna); Thank You For The Music (ABBA); Together Forever (Pam Wedgwood); You And I (Pam Wedgwood); You're Beautiful (James Blunt)

Faber Music Ltd Film Themes The Piano Collection
Book SynopsisFavourite themes and songs from such films as Star Wars, Frozen, Hunger Games, How To Train Your Dragon and Twilight, plus pieces from the Harry Potter film series and "Mia and Sebastian's Theme" from La La Land. Arranged for the intermediate pianist.Trade Review"This selection offers an excellent alternative to standard repertoire, particularly for the film buff, and I know my advanced students would love this volume as a fun alternative to traditional sight-reading material. A great addition to the student, teacher and piano lover’s library." Melanie Spanswick, The Classical Piano & Music Education Blog. March 2017 “Put simply, this is a brilliant collection for the more advanced pianist who wants to explore these movie themes and play them in intelligent piano arrangements... Although there are a generous 112 pages, I had no problem with it staying open on the piano music rest, nor at this point does the binding seem likely to fail... It’s great to see movie music benefit from this level of pianistic adaptation, and I have no doubt that fans of the music will be utterly delighted by this collection...without doubt or reservation, Faber are to be congratulated for compiling such a diverse and well-rounded collection as this, and I am sure many will be quick to snap it up!” Andrew Eales, Pianodao.com. Faber Music Ltd Peaceful Piano Playlist
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewFaber are to be loudly applauded for their vision and generosity in putting this collection together. The Peaceful Piano Playlist without doubt includes an enterprising and impressive range of composers and music, with plenty to appeal to those players who stream similar playlists online and are drawn to this musical genre. In practice, I should think that even a fairly advanced player would take quite a while to work their way through all 35 pieces included here; the book represents superb value for money and is undoubtedly one that players will want to keep returning to. To summarise, Faber Music have brilliantly encapsulated a very current musical zeitgeist with this collection, and it deserves to simply fly off the shelves! www.pianodao.com, June 2019Table of ContentsI Giorni (Ludovico Einaudi); Ab Ovo (Joep Beving); Written On The Sky (Max Richter); Gymnopédie No. 3 (Erik Satie); Mass (Re-Imagined) (Phoria); Pathétique Sonata, 2nd Movt (Ludwig van Beethoven); Earnestly Yours (Keaton Henson); The Tearjerker Returns (Chilly Gonzales); Chord Left (Agnes Obel); Engagement Party (Justin Hurwitz); Last Song (Alexis Ffrench); Clair de Lune (Claude Debussy); Throes (Half Moon Run); Aria (BWV 988) (J.S.
