Rehabilitation: brain and spinal injuries Books
Lannoo Publishers Spinal Surgery for Physiotherapists
Book SynopsisPain and discomfort related to the spine are extremely common, to the extent that back and neck pain may be considered part of the human condition. In most instances, interventions are not necessary. However, surgery can be required in some situations, and may be considered as a valuable option in others. In order to enable accurate patient counselling and to help in fine-tuning indications for surgery (for example, after unsatisfactory relief from conservative pain management), physiotherapists and rehabilitation specialists should be aware of surgery rationales and techniques. In most cases, surgery does not stand on its own, and postoperative rehabilitation will benefit from a certain degree of surgical knowledge by the physiotherapist and rehabilitation specialist. Additionally, it is paramount that all spinal caregivers speak the same vocabulary and issue the same messages to the patient. This little book explains surgical reasoning and surgical techniques to non-surgeons. It aims at crossing the bridge between surgical and rehabilitation paradigms to the benefit of patients. The entire field is covered in a concise and comprehensive way, and will be a must-read in spinal rehabilitation practices.

Hay House UK Ltd Whole Brain Living: The Anatomy of Choice and the
Book SynopsisThe New York Times best-selling author of My Stroke of Insight blends neuroanatomy with psychology to show how we can short-circuit emotional reactivity and find our way to peace. For half a century we have been trained to believe that our right brain hemisphere is our emotional brain, while our left brain houses our rational thinking. Now neuroscience shows that it’s not that simple: in fact, our emotional limbic tissue is evenly divided between our two hemispheres. Consequently, each hemisphere has both an emotional brain and a thinking brain. In this groundbreaking new book, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor—author of the New York Times bestseller My Stroke of Insight—presents these four distinct modules of cells as four characters that make up who we are: Character 1, Left Thinking; Character 2, Left Emotion; Character 3, Right Emotion; and Character 4, Right Thinking.Everything we think, feel, or do is dependent upon brain cells to perform that function. Since each of the Four Characters stems from specific groups of cells that feel unique inside of our body, they each display particular skills, feel specific emotions, or think distinctive thoughts. In Whole Brain Living, available in paperback for the first time, Dr. Taylor blends neuroanatomy with psychology to help us:Get acquainted with our own Four Characters, observe how they show up in our daily life, and learn to identify and relate to them in others as wellApply the wisdom of the Four Characters to every area of life—from work to relationships to healthUse a powerful practice called the Brain Huddle—a tool for bringing our Four Characters into conversation with one another—to short-circuit emotional reactivity, tap our characters’ respective strengths, and choose which one to embody in any situationThe more we become familiar with each of the characters in ourselves and others, the more power we gain over our thoughts, our feelings, our relationships, and our lives. Indeed, we discover that we have the power to choose who and how we want to be in every moment. And when our Four Characters work together and balance one another as a whole brain, we gain a radical new road map to deep inner peace.

Plural Publishing Inc Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy for Traumatic
Book SynopsisCognitive Rehabilitation Therapy for Traumatic Brain Injury: A Guide for Speech-Language Pathologists is designed for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) treating adults with cognitive-communicative impairments following traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI has received recent attention, due to an increase in the number of individuals with TBI, but also given concerns over long-term complications associated with TBI, such as concussion in sports. Cognitive impairments are one of the cardinal features of TBI, affecting communication and activities of daily living. Increasingly, SLPs are required to provide services to individuals with TBI. This book integrates scientific information into a user friendly and practical application tool as a starting point for practicing SLPs.Section I contains chapters that serve as background for understanding the treatment of individuals with TBI. Included are chapters addressing the nature of injury and recovery of TBI, and chapters on broader topics such as medical management and service delivery principles. An overview of cognitive-communicative impairments is also included, as are sections devoted to compounding conditions such as speech, language, voice, swallowing, hearing/balance, and emotional/behavioral issues. Section II contains chapters devoted to the treatment of TBI and cognitive-communicative impairments. Each chapter focuses on a treatment approach shown to have an established base of evidence to support its effective use. Chapters in Section II are formatted similarly, with an introduction to a treatment approach, followed by details and clinically useable information, such as recommended candidates, treatment procedures, ways to individualize the approach, and data collection techniques. Each chapter ends with a case study providing an example of treatment implementation. The associated PluralPlus companion website contains modifiable forms and materials for use in implementing the approaches (e.g., data collection sheets, stimuli lists, etc.), as well as video clips of treatment sessions using the approaches described in the book. The video clips are tied to actual case studies at the end of each treatment chapter.Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy for Traumatic Brain Injury can serve as a supplemental textbook for graduate courses on neurologic communication disorders. It is also a valuable resource for students during clinical practicum with individuals with TBI (e.g., hospital internships or clinical hours). This book is also a professional resource that summarizes information in a way that is applicable to clinical practice for practicing SLPs. The presence of useable materials on the website, case studies with video clips, and sections with information like candidacy, data collection, and approach modification, all lend themselves to the use of this book as a professional resource.

Filament Publishing Ltd A Stroke of Luck: A Healing Journey Recovering
Book SynopsisThe stroke I am referring to in this book is a CVA (Cerebrovascular Accident). In my case, it was a blockage in the central lobe with a banging headache, dizziness and then the whole left side losing feeling. Not nice! I realised this was life threatening when my consultant turned to my husband and said, “We need to act quickly; time is not on her side.” My husband’s response was, “Don’t stand there, get on with it!” If he hadn’t, my life now would be very different. My concentration levels were not good at first. I knew I needed to keep my brain active: I did not want to lose my mind, memory etc. However, with the help, love and support of others (and two years on), I can now share my thoughts on this experience. Who knows? It may help others to cope. Through this book, I am going to share my deepest darkest days, and explain to you why I feel lucky.

Pavilion Publishing and Media Ltd Mindfulness and Stroke: A Personal Story of
Book SynopsisThe core of this book was created by Jody Mardula over several years following a life-threatening stroke - a fairly unusual type of stroke known as a subarachnoid haemorrhage. At the time, Jody was Director of a world-renowned mindfulness centre at Bangor University. The stroke - along with a second 11 months later and a subsequent diagnosis of vascular dementia - affected Jody both psychologically and physically. In Mindfulness and Stroke, she charts her journey from the day of her first stroke, and explains how she adapted short, easy-to-learn mindfulness practices in order to support herself, manage the impact of her injury and make sense of her situation. Jody's text is enhanced by clinical neuropsychologist Frances Vaughan, whose 'Neuro Notes' provide information and advice about coping with the events described in each section of Jody's writing. Frances also contributes Section Two of the book - ten chapters explaining some of Jody's experiences, and looking more broadly at brain injury and its impact on areas of life such as attention, memory, self-awareness and identity.Trade Review'Jody is one of the wisest women I have known. Her story is inspiring and jaw-dropping.'Ruby Wax, author of A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled; 'This remarkable story begins with its author suddenly close to death - as if on a raft floating towards it. But the raft turned. She returned to life - but, in so many ways, not the same one at all. The book is witness to Jody's own persistence and openness, to Frances's wise encouragement, and to the gentle help of family and friends. It is written so that we, when this happens to us or to our loved ones, may also find the courage to discover new ways of living life.' Springer Nature Switzerland AG When Words Betray Us: Language, the Brain, and
Book SynopsisThis book presents a journey into how language is put together for speaking and understanding and how it can come apart when there is injury to the brain. The goal is to provide a window into language and the brain through the lens of aphasia, a speech and language disorder resulting from brain injury in adults. This book answers the question of how the brain analyzes the pieces of language, its sounds, words, meaning, and ultimately puts them together into a unitary whole. While its major focus is on clinical, experimental, and theoretical approaches to language deficits in aphasia, it integrates this work with recent technological advances in neuroimaging to provide a state-of-the-art portrayal of language and brain function. It also shows how current computational models that share properties with those of neurons allow for a common framework to explain how the brain processes language and its parts and how it breaks down according to these principles. Consideration will also be given to whether language can recover after brain injury or when areas of the brain recruited for speaking, understanding, or reading are deprived of input, as seen with people who are deaf or blind. No prior knowledge of linguistics, psychology, computer science, or neuroscience is assumed. The informal style of this book makes it accessible to anyone with an interest in the complexity and beauty of language and who wants to understand how it is put together, how it comes apart, and how language maps on to the brain.Table of ContentsChapter1: Introduction.- Chapter2: Getting Started.- Chapter3: The sounds of language.- Chapter4: The words of language: the mental lexicon.- Chapter5: What does it mean: semantics.- Chapter6: Putting words together: Syntax.- Chapter7: Why two hemispheres: the role of the right hemisphere in language.- Chapter8: The plastic brain.- Chapter9: Wrapping up.
