In Respect the Spindle, Franquemont emphasizes the spindle's importance and use to make yarn in advanced ways for high-end to novelty cloth. The perfect how-to book for any spinner with a growing collection of spindles or even just a dowel, Respect the Spindle combines step-by-step photography with detailed illustrations, making the spindle spinning techniques clear to even the novice spinner. Franquemont teaches techniques from the basics, such as getting started on the spindle, to more specialized techniques, such as using the spindle to make specific kinds of yarn faster than imagined. Images of gorgeous yarn and spindles provide inspiration and plenty of eye candy for any fiber lover. Franquemont also includes five simple projects give spinners practice in creating a variety of yarns and patterns. Trade ReviewAug 10 This is much more than a technique book. There are 50 pages about spindles and the history of spinning, before you get to "Starting to Spin". The instructions are very well done, nothing is rushed and there are good photos of everything you need. I'd happily recommend this to a beginner. It is a very readable book. We have tales of Abby's own experiences as a spinner, a chapter on how spindles work (it does get a bit technical, but she does explain it all clearly), all spindle spinning and plying techniques well covered, and even a few pages on looking after your spindles and repairing them. Interweave Press Inc Weaver's Idea Book: Creative Cloth on a
Book SynopsisUse one of the world's simplest tools to explore the creative possibilities of cloth! The Weaver's Idea Book presents a variety of patterns for simple rigid-heddle and harness looms, complete with sample swatches for drafts and project ideas. Beginning and experienced weavers on the lookout for new weave structure patterns will be drawn to the multitude of designs in The Weaver's Idea Book.Trade ReviewAs a guide for beginners and practiced weavers Jane Patrick's book is inspirational. Although specifically aimed at the rigid heddle loom, the 200 pages hold a wealth of information on weave structures and patterns that can be used on many looms. The spiral bound, textbook-style layout is good, with clear section separation, and the chapters take you up a hierarchy of difficulty. I felt comfortable with plain, finger-controlled and pick up weaves, then I marvelled in awe at sections on warp and weft-faced frabrics and working with two heddles. There is a nod to garment and item construction in the guise of a few set pieces, but the book's real strength is in opening a treasure chest of weaving possibility to new or relatively inexperienced weavers. Each section provides a soft kaleidoscope of samples which I have already been tempted to replicate. The book will doubtless remain a good source book to refer to for new creative ideas and inspiration. However, the book might give the absolute beginner a puzzle at times, as it is not always clear and sometimes repetitive. Generally though, the book was a joy to read and is unlikely to gather dust on my bookshelf.-Journal for Weavers Spinners & DyersTable of ContentsInside readers will learn: Techniques including leno, Brooks bouquet, soumak, and embroidery on fabric Weaving patterns and swatches that illustrate each technique, accompanied by beautiful step-by-step photography How to create 10 attractive projects, including a felted scarf, sturdy tote, evening wrap, table mat, tunic with pattern trim, felted wrap skirt with woven-in belt loops, honeycomb pillow pair, clasped-weft coasters, apron with paper pile, and a double weave table runner Weaving tips and tricks to help weavers at all levels achieve their textile dreams

Looms are easy and fun to use, even without conventional knitting experience. An individual can create almost anything, from knitted tubes for hats or socks to flat panels for scarves, shawls and sweaters. This new and updated book is designed as an essential reference and a hands-on project resource for the loom knitter. The first part of the book provides loom-knitting techniques for both round and rectangular looms, and knitting boards. An inspiring design section presents more than 35 patterns to get the new loom-knitter started. Also included are a handy stitch pattern section and a glossary of techniques.Trade ReviewGreat book! It's very well explained and really does treat you like a beginner. I love the simple instructions and that it has pictures which help show each stage. It has some really cute projects which would make lovely handmade presents for family and friends. It's also good that it has pictures for each project so you know what you're aiming for! * Caroline Bourne * I am completely new to Loom Knitting although I can knit the traditional way! I'm now inspired to go and purchase a loom - I never realised the looms were so versatile - I thought all that could be made were hats! Also amazed that you can do several different stitches. The pictures are clear and seem very easy to follow. My first project will be the beautiful cowl! * Shelagh Bird *another new hobby for me to learn the book is clear and easy to understand covers all the things you need to start plus patterns /projects * Lynne Hart *I have never tried this before but this is a fantastic book with clear and precise instructions * Denise Bonham *I've looked at the book, as a beginner, and can't believe how detailed it is. I am awaiting arrival of a loom, but am looking forward to trying at during the holidays. It looks like it will be getting a lot of use between me & the kids. A joy to read * Colleen Allison *Even though i can knit and crochet it is nice to be able to learn something a bit different , i find the book clear to understand with loads of patterns that i can't wait to get started on, it even tells you what tools you need very precise ,suitable for beginners and poeple like me that already have skills , great book * Julie Dawn *I received a free copy of this book from Search Press. The book itself is a good manageable size. I love the cover design and all the colour pictures within, they really help to make it feel uplifting and inspiring. The information within is set out in easy to read sections with lots of pictures to help. The topics covered are comprehensive and the patterns are for adults and children, and all really wearable items. I think this is a great book for anyone wanting to start out with their loom. * Cherry Edwards *I'd never heard of knitting on a loom before so I definitely needed a book for beginners. This fits the bill perfectly. It starts with advice on what equipment there is and how to decide what to buy which is really helpful. Advice on yarn is helpful and means the book would be suitable even if you're not experienced in normal knitting. The techniques are explained with clear pictures in a logical sequence. And of course you then want to crack on and make something so there is a good selection of patterns. Most of these are quite small items so look like they would be satisfying to complete. I find hats and socks quite tricky on normal knitting needles so am looking forward to getting myself a some equipment to try those. * Heather Haig *Loom knitting is a craft I haven't tried yet and have wanted to try making a sock with a loom, The book explains about all the different Looms there are,the stitches, and also felting. The instructions are so easy to follow specially as there are pictures as well. The patterns are all things I would try, usually I find that books have things in it I would never dream of making. Defintely recommend this book. * Kathy Downing *

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewSusan walks us through alternating light and dark threads, in both warp and weft, to produce motifs outlined with an identical shadow. Learn how structure works, then weave any of the 25 project patterns. * Machine Knitting Monthly *As a novice weaver I have attempted shadow weaving once, was disappointed with the results and did not feel inclined to try it again. Until I read this book. By the time I had read the introduction and the first two pages I suddenly realised that I understood the weave structure, as the title promised. The author writes in a friendly and conversational style. After explaining the basic principles of shadow weaving, she leads the reader step-by-step through threading and treadling for four and eight-harness set-ups. In Chapter 6 she explains how to break down a full draft into its individual components, starting with the dominant threads, then adding the shadow threads, before putting all the components together to see if it works. The second half of the book contains 15 very attractive projects to try, from simple but beautiful designs on 4-shafts to complex constructions for 8-shafts. I now understand why my first attempt at shadow weaving failed and I can’t wait to warp up my loom for my next project. Highly recommended. -- Sarah A. Search Press Ltd Yarn Spinning with a Modern Twist: How to Create
Book SynopsisThis accessible and inspiring introduction to drop-spindle spinning is ideal for fibre artists, knitters, crocheters, felters and weavers. Vanessa Kroening explains how to clean and prepare fleece for spinning, giving valuable tips to beginners and more experienced spinners alike. There are sections on choosing a fleece, carding, blending colours, making rolags (rolls of fibre), batts (flat carded fibres) and a step-by-step explanation of how to use a drop spindle – a great way to spin your own yarn without needing to invest in an expensive spinning wheel. Vanessa also shows you to how to ply and dye your yarn and how to add beads, sequins and other decorative elements for a modern and wonderfully artistic finish.Trade ReviewThe colorful debut from spinner Kroening teaches crafters how to make yarn using a drop spindle. The author breaks down how to use the simple instrument to turn raw fleece into thread, helping readers get started with advice on how to choose a fleece (matted wool is hard to spin, and kemp doesn’t dye well), clean it (tease the fibers apart and soak them in warm water), and card it (she prefers using a blending board, which resembles a small easel with sharp-toothed tines on it). Step-by-step photos show how to use the spindle, which dangles in the air from a strand of wool that tightens into yarn as one spins the tool. The author’s variations on drop spindle technique are a highlight, showing how to incorporate beads, sequins, and other embellishments. She also shows how to adjust the way one feeds wool to the spindle to create different yarn textures; for example, intermittently adjusting the angle of one’s wrist downward as one pushes the wool creates a “thick-and-thin” thread that leaves tufts in the yarn. The bounty of photos ensure readers will know how every step should look, and Kroening’s knowledge of the craft impresses. This makes yarn spinning easy. * Publisher's Weekly *Using a drop spindle is a great way to spin our own yarn without investing in an expensive wheel. The book explains how to clean and prepare fleece, gives tips to beginners, shoes us how to ply and dye yarn then add beads, sequins and other decorative elements for a modern artistic finish. * Machine Knitting Monthly, January 2023 *An excellent introduction to spinning with a drop spindle. Unlike some authors who are didactic with methodology you are given options in things like how to hold a spindle to suit you. The 'why' of following procedures is explained which led to a couple of lightbulb moments and explained why instructions from other authors resulted in a messy failure. Beautiful photography of each stage of taking fibre from fleece to yarn encourages you to start from scratch rather than relying on processed rolags. Lots of practical tips and the odd warning made this such a great read that I look forward, with confidence, to accepting next time my local farmer offers a fleece. -- Alison Finch * Customer Review *This is an amazing book both for beginners and more experienced spinners. It covers just about everything from equipment, methods of colour blending using carder, drum carder and blending boards, spinning, plying and even dyeing. I would definitely recommend. -- Sally Dopson * Customer Review *Colourful and very well illustrated, this book is ideal for the beginner spindle spinner who wishes to create the latest bold and beautiful art yarns, but doesn’t want to invest at this early stage in a spinning wheel. Chapters are logically arranged and the advice is concisely written and sound. Assuming no prior knowledge of spinning, the first part of the book covers choosing and preparing fleece, carding and blending, then choosing your spindle and how to get spinning. Ample clear, step-by-step photographs are provided, making mastering the techniques shown very straightforward. A wide range of necessary techniques are covered, including choosing and then scouring your fleece, the use of a picker, flicker carder, blending board and drum carder. Conventional and Andean plying are explained, followed by spinning art yarns. Auto-wrapping, cloud spinning, lock spinning, slub yarns, beaded yarns, core spinning and beehives are all covered too. These techniques take some experimentation and practice on either a wheel or a spindle, but are well-described and should enable the reader to give them a good try. The book concludes with a short section on dyeing and a gallery of woven or knitted projects using the art yarns described. -- Christina Chrisholm, Online Guild * Association of Guilds for Spinners, Weavers and Dyers *Table of ContentsChoosing & Preparing your Fleece Fibre Preparation Spinning Plying Finishing the Yarn Drop Spindle Techniques Dyeing

Stackpole Books Handwoven Table Linens
Book SynopsisMaster weaver Tom Knisely presents patterns and ideas to spruce up your table with new weaves.Trade ReviewFor weavers, Handwoven Table Linens is like a sampler of different weave structures. Twenty-seven projects in 4- and 8-shafts encompass techniques such as summer and winter, false satin, overshot, shadow weave, canvas weave and Quigley. For intermediate and experienced weavers who prefer to learn by doing, they provide a simple way to try new things. Anyone weaving for a holiday table will like the Finnish Trees place mats, with their subtle, abstract pine border. Other projects include table runners, napkins, a tablecloth, and mug rugs–everything you need to dress a bare table. Tom points out that, by choosing colors and patterns that complement the dishes on the table, you can create one-of-a-kind, personalized textiles that are exactly right for the people on your gift-giving list! Each project lists the warp and weft yarns, sett, total number of ends, and width. The weaving instructions are provided in the threading, tie-up and treadling charts. (Beginners should be aware that this book does not include warping instructions or information for planning and making calculations for warp length.) As always, Kathleen Eckhaus really delivers on the photographs. Clear, beautifully staged project photos include at least one close-up of each piece, showing both front and back when relevant. Additional photos, such as the one found on the title page, create an inviting and homey atmosphere in which to peruse this book. -- Amanda RobinetteWhether weaving on a rigid heddle loom, table or floor loom: kitchen linens are rewarding to weave. They are useful, help decorate your room, nice to use and can protect your furnish. Linens are fun to create with patterns, colors and fibers. They also make the perfect gift for an engagement, wedding shower and hostess present. I enjoy putting on yards and yards of neutral warp and thread in a pattern that has many variations. Then it is a matter of sitting down, relaxing and creating. If you need a little prompting on what pattern to weave your towels, place-mats, table runners, napkins, tablecloths and mug rugs, I have just the book. Master weaver Tom Knisely is truly an inspiration with his latest beautiful projects, Handwoven Table Linens: 27 fabulous projects from a master weaver. Though some of the patterns look complex, don’t let that stop you. There are simple weaves that are worked on 2 and 4 harness looms. For the more experienced weaver and for those who have looms with more harnesses, there are wonderful patterns for you to explore. The photographs make it difficult to decide what you want to weave first. You will get good use out of this book. Tom gives you great information about the history, materials to use and ideas on different finishes. The weaving drafts are laid out in a clear easy to use (large print) manner. He has a project called Kitchen Sink. Weavers always ask what to do with the waste thread on the loom. Tom and I use them in the same way. Now I have a name for it, “Zanshi.” It is a Japanese word for leftover thread weaving. You will like the results and feel good about recycling. I believe you will enjoy this book as much as I have. If so, look for his other bestsellers Weaving Rag Rugs and Handwoven Baby Blankets. -- Paula Moliver

This information creates a solid foundation before they tackle some of the more advanced projects. The book has thirty useful and decorative projects. Additional variations, like weaving on the bias or creating sculptural shapes, may help to inspire more advanced weavers to take a closer look at applying this technique to their work. Readers may be surprised with the discovery that the vintage pin loom projects have a place among contemporary textiles. --Jan Hewitt Towsley -- Shuttle, Spindle & DyepotPin looms seem to be popping up everywhere these days. For weavers with limited room or a limited budget, or who want a more portable option for weaving, the pin loom is a wonderful choice. Of course, after weaving the first few squares, many weavers ask, "What do I do with all these bits?" If you're pin loom weaver extraordinaire Margaret Stump, the answer is, "Just about anything." In her latest book on pin-loom weaving, Stump shares her inspired designs for pieces woven on a variety of portable looms, including the standard 4" x 4" loom, a 2" x 2" pin loom, an adjustable fine-gauge knitting loom, and a potholder loom. Almost a third of the book focuses on tutorials. In addition to instructions for weaving with each type of loom, the book shows how to make a 2" x 2" loom and how to join woven pieces. I especially enjoyed the tutorial for weaving with yarn on a potholder loom. Anyone who enjoys weaving on the ubiquitous 4" x 4" loom will love the tutorials on bias weaving and weaving triangles. The triangle tutorial is particularly clever and opens up a whole new world of design possibilities with this simple loom. -- Christina Garton, Handwoven
