Book SynopsisEver since the 1910s Zurich Kunstgewerbemuseum, or Museum of Arts & Crafts - which was founded in 1875 and is known today as the Museum fur Gestaltung Zurich - has been focussing on producing high-quality posters to promote its exhibitions. The posters serve to project the museum's visual identity into the public space while at the same time documenting the variety of themes presented there. Their high recongition factor is achieved not through rigid corporate designs but by means of graphical quality, versatile design approaches, and meticulous printing. By the 1920s, the pictorial scenes of the early days were already being supplanted by graphic and typographic solutions, following the lead of the Russian Constructivists. Formal and substantive reduction was characteristic of the Swiss Style, which - whether rigorous or more playful - dominated the Swiss cultural poster until the 1960s. From around 1970 designers began to expermient more freely, due in part to the use of computer programs as new design tools. Posters from the late 1980s impressively demonstrate how the legacy of Swiss Style lives on as a fertile resource, continually being reinterpreted in fresh new ways. Innovative approaches by young designers deliver some surprises in the contemporary posters.

Book SynopsisThe medium of the poster is distinguished by displaying messages combining images and text on a static, two-dimensional surface. Designers have, however, always toyed with extending the plane by adding a third dimension, whether spatial or temporal, in order to fool the eye. Stop Motion examines the myriad creative approaches to suggesting movement, recession into depth, dynamics, and rhythm. Perspectival narrowing and plastically rendered motifs are among the traditional stylistic means used in painterly and illustrative posters. Borrowings from Op Art or psychedelic art perplex the eye. In photographic posters, techniques such as blurring or time exposure are used to cause an image to vibrate. But sophisticated printing techniques can also broaden the possibilities of visual expression. In contemporary posters, it is the strictly graphic means of writing, abstract pictograms, or geometric forms that stretch out nested spaces, through which the gaze wanders restlessly. Stop Motion reveals that poster designers have in fact traditionally sought to incorporate the aspect of movement. Moreover, the works assembled in the publication show that—with the exception of the current animated poster trend—the simulation of movement and three dimensions is always the result of a conscious design decision motivated by the respective content.

Moving beyond the latest modish trends and beauty ideals, fashion posters reflect moral codes and social conditions. In particular, they pander to the longing to escape routine everyday life, for these posters suggest that it is possible to attain a completely new identity simply by opting for a different garment or style. Androgynous models and less normative images of men and women in the advertising industry mark the dawn of a new era that entails constantly balancing aspirations to individuality against a sense of collective belonging. Fashion posters from past and present are lifestyle propositions; they tell stories, seduce and shock. Playing with convention and provocation, bodies are sometimes lavishly veiled and disguised, sometimes sensually staged. At times consumers are only indirectly encouraged to shop. A button or a coat collar as a pars pro toto illustrate product quality in historical posters. A new, somewhat controversial approach to fashion advertising emerges in Benetton campaigns from the early 1990s. Overtly erotic ostentation contrasts with poetic allusions that are for example the hallmark of highly aesthetic Japanese fashion posters. En Vogue brings together fashion advertising spanning roughly a hundred years and deploying myriad different PR strategies, in each case reflecting the cultures and periods in which it was created.

These campaigns are often concerned with issues that heat up the emotions and lead to ideological battles. Swiss campaign posters, which have influenced opinion making since the beginning of the 20th century, bear testimony to direct democracy. This special form of political propaganda—prominently associated with Switzerland—is a sensitive indicator of socio-political moods and reflects both national mentalities and global tendencies. Yes! No! Posters for Democracy reveals the visual argumentation strategies and rhetorical approaches that have shaped the Swiss campaign poster from 1918 to the present. Clichéd exaggerations, undifferentiated simplifications, a repertoire of drastic motifs and abridged slo- gans correspond to the laws of the medium, which is oriented towards a manipulative appeal to the masses. Appeals to a sense of unity focus primarily on emotionalization, hardly on rational enlightenment. Subtly condensed messages or a graphically innovative language are hardly to be found in Swiss campaign posters. And yet many renowned designers created works that have inscribed themselves in the collective visual memory of the Swiss population and became icons of Swiss poster design.

Book SynopsisIranian graphic design looks back on a brief history. The first poster designers completed independent artistic training and created painterly-illustrative works in the 1960s. The simultaneous opening to the West under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi promoted global cultural exchange. With the proclamation of the Islamic Republic in 1979 and the First Gulf War (1980–1988), however, this was rapidly interrupted. At the end of the 1980s, a new generation of designers took up the graphic heritage of the pre-war period. At the turn of the millennium, the Iranian poster finally conquered international festivals and caused a great stir in the Western community. The volume Contemporary Iran brings together Iranian cultural posters from 1960 to the present. Despite the many different creative approaches, they always demonstrate the search for a fusion of history and contemporaneity, Iran’s own tradition and Western inspiration, art and everyday culture. An often unorthodox interpretation of Persian cultural heritage is combined with the confident use of computer-generated graphics. Thus, some posters confirm common Western notions of Islamic aesthetics, while others radically undermine them and irritate and surprise us.

Contemporary events seen through the eyes of 20th century artists show a passion for freedom and human rights and demand equality and tolerance. L'imagination au pouvoir was a slogan devised by artist Pierre Aléchinsky during the May 1968 student riots in Paris. The particular appeal of political posters for avant-garde artists comes from their dual inspiration of utopian ideals and Jive history. The postwar period, when Picasso's unassuming dove image was commandeered by the Communist peace movement, was succeeded by the general wilful resistance of the younger generation in the 1960s. In 1968, many supported the students' demands and produced political posters. In the 1970s, the focus turned to freedom for minorities, and this was followed not much later by environmental pollution a great concern of artists such as Joseph Beuys. In the mid-80s, the AIDS scare turned eyes on to discrimination and social marginalisation; and the concept of equality resurfaced, especially in the work of American artists such as Keith Haring and Jenny Holtzer. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, followed by globalization, was reflected in posters by Robert Rauschenberg and others. This story of international protest movements, narrated through vivid designs by the great artists of our day, is also a story of the art of the period a selective view, perhaps, but nonetheless an expression of astonishing continuity and authenticity. Book SynopsisText in English and German. Gunter Rambow (b.1938) is one of the most prominent designers in the area of visual communication and cultural advertising. He produced numerous photo books and outstanding posters at the Rambow & Lienemeyer graphic design studio (1961-86), and is now carrying on his work at the Rambow, van de Sand studio. Particularly with his posters for the Schauspiel Frankfurt under the direction of Peter Palitzsch, Rambow succeeded in creating symbols for theatre's claim to political involvement and effectively introducing them into the urban environment. From 1974 to 2003 Gunter Rambow taught at the Universität Kassel and the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe as a professor of visual communication. In 2007, the Museum für Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt is following the example of the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the Shanghai Art Museum and many other institutions and dedicating a major solo exhibition to his work. The show is an encounter between more than one hundred posters by Gunter Rambow -- dating from 1962 to the present -- and Richard Meier's museum architecture. The publication appearing in conjunction with this exhibition documents the dialogue between Rambow's poster art and Meier's museum building. When Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec moved to Paris, he soon became a real chronicler of Parisian life.
