Wolters Kluwer Health Rosen's Diagnosis of Breast Pathology by Needle
Book SynopsisPacked with sound solutions to common and uncommon diagnostic dilemmas, Rosen’s Diagnosis of Breast Pathology by Needle Core Biopsy, Fifth Edition, helps pathologists in the detection of subtle features which lead to decisive diagnoses. In this award-winning text, Drs. Syed A. Hoda, Raza S. Hoda, and Elaine Zhong provide an entirely updated and sumptuously illustrated guide to correlating pathological, clinical and radiological findings. This exceptionally readable book is primarily designed to assist pathologists in making a confident diagnosis on the limited tissue samples of needle core biopsies. The text provides pertinent information to enable pathologists to engage with radiologists, surgeons, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists in dealing with all types of cases- in the current demanding era of multidisciplinary management. The challenges faced by pathologists in dealing with needle core biopsies are summarized in the following self-evident maxims: 1. Anything can turn up. 2. What you see is what you have, and it may not be all there is. 3. What you see may be all there is. These axioms were originally stated by Dr. Paul P. Rosen in the Preface to the First Edition of this book—and continue to be relevant today. Pathologists must always keep these precepts in mind when rendering diagnoses on needle core biopsies. In sum, this book serves as a comprehensive guide to interpreting the complex and limited material of needle core biopsies. Features updated content, new illustrations, and innovative tables throughout. Includes latest classifications, cutting-edge molecular pathology information, updated details on ancillary testing; current management recommendations; latest reference sources; and more. Contains a new chapter on ancillary testing on needle core biopsy specimens. Includes more than 1,500 high-quality images which capture the key features of each lesion

American Registry of Pathology Tumors of the Ovary and Fallopian Tube
Book SynopsisThe complexity of ovary and fallopian tube pathology is striking, with dozens of tumor types. There is a greater appreciation now of the importance of hereditary cancer syndromes in ovarian and tubal malignancies, as two common autosomal dominant hereditary cancer predisposition syndromes include carcinomas of ovary or fallopian tube. This book is organized following the structure and terminology of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of Female Genital Tumors, 5th edition. It includes some new entities that have been described since that book's publication in 2020 and provides detailed discussion of differential diagnosis, relevant ancillary tests, and strategies to approach diagnosis. In addition, discussions of the underlying biology of these tumors, as it relates to their diagnosis, are also presented. This fascicle provides an opportunity for deeper reading and quiet reflection about the progress that has been made in our understanding of tumors of the ovary since the previous landmark edition was published in 1998, as well as a respect for the numerous challenges that remain. Free digital access available with every print purchase. See inside the book for more details.

American Registry of Pathology Tumors of the Cervix, Vagina, and Vulva
Book SynopsisFree digital access available with every print purchase. See inside the book for more details. The classification and characteristics of tumors and tumor-like lesions of the female lower genital tract have remained relatively constant over the years, though shifts in nomenclature have occurred, and a comprehensive review of the diverse histomorphology and differential diagnosis of lesions at these sites is of paramount importance. Although female lower genital tract pathology is largely dominated by epithelial tumors, the pathologist will also encounter mesenchymal, melanocytic, and hematopoietic neoplasms. This fascicle provides a comprehensive discussion of these categories with emphasis on their wid¬ening clinical and pathologic spectrum as well as their evolving molecular landscape. The book conveys the authors’ extensive experience as pathologists devoted to women’s health and to ad¬vancing understanding of gynecologic disease.

American Registry of Pathology Non-Neoplastic Disorders of the Endocrine System
Book SynopsisFree digital access available with every print purchase. See inside the book for more details. In endocrine pathology, surgical pathologists often concentrate on neoplasms at the expense of nonneoplastic disease processes. This is unfortunate as nonneoplastic endocrine disorders are many times more common in the population. As in all fields of medicine, nonneo¬plastic endocrine diseases can closely mimic the neoplastic; an awareness of all aspects of pathology underpins routine clinical practice. This Fifth Series Fascicle offers pathologists and clinicians an opportunity to develop an increased understanding of nontumor endocrine pathology in order to inform patient care.

American Registry of Pathology Atlas of Placental Pathology
Book SynopsisThe placenta is an organ often neglected by surgical pathologists and clinicians alike. Placental diagnoses provide risk assessment for infant prognosis, recurrent risk for future pregnancies, and explanatory findings. There is widespread interest in placental diagnosis for the antenatal determinants of adult disease, inborn errors of metabolism, specific infections, malignancies, and assessing placental function in real time with the ultimate goal of affecting treatment. Due to the difficulties inherent in studying human gestation and gestational pathologies, much of what is known about the relevance of placental pathology is biased toward personal experience and retrospective studies. However, this book presents evidence-based information to the reader. The authors emphasize the need for an educated and directed sampling of the placenta through gross examination which will result in a better and more useful final diagnosis.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology
Book SynopsisThe first edition of The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology introduced a completely new paradigm for detecting bladder cancer by urine cytology. This system concentrated on defining morphological characteristics of the most clinically significant form of bladder cancer, High Grade Urothelial Carcinoma. This new approach has been widely accepted throughout the world, and has become part of the daily practice of cytology. Considering that the first edition of The Paris System (TPS) introduced a new model of urinary cytodiagnosis, verification and expansion of initial material and data were anticipated. Based on evolving knowledge and readership requests, the group of highly experienced authors have created a new edition of TPS. This second edition includes areas and issues not originally covered. A new chapter on urine cytology of the upper tract, a rarely addressed topic, has been introduced. Furthermore, the issue of cellular degeneration is discussed in the criteria of all diagnostic categories. Examples of standardized reports are included in each chapter. Most importantly, a separate chapter presents data defining the risk of malignancy (ROM) for each diagnostic category to inform clinical management. New high quality images augment those of the first edition to better illustrate diagnostic clues and potential pitfalls. In addition to chapters on diagnostic criteria, current concepts of pathogenesis of bladder cancer, specimen adequacy and preparation, and ancillary tests are covered in separate chapters. A bonus to the volume is a comprehensive history of urine as the earliest diagnostic sample of human disease, richly illustrated with artworks from major museums. Written by internationally recognized authorities, this comprehensive and evidence-based guide to urine cytology is supported by the newest data confirming the original concept and significance of diagnostic criteria defining High Grade Urothelial Carcinoma. TPS is an essential tool for anyone who is practicing urinary cytology, including cytotechnologists, pathologists-in-training and practicing pathologists. This book should find a place in every cytology laboratory throughout the world. The Concept has been endorsed by the American Society of Cytopathology, and the International Academy of Cytology.Table of Contents

The University of Chicago Press Postmortem How Medical Examiners Explain
Book SynopsisWhy did someone die? Should someone be held accountable? Can medical examiners unmask the perfect crime? Examining the world of medical examiners, this title presents the intricate web of pathological, social, legal, and moral issues in which they operate. It focuses on how medical examiners speak to the living on behalf of the dead.Trade Review"Fascinating, carefully crafted, and very illuminating. Strongly grounded in the three years Stefan Timmermans spent shadowing medical examiners, Postmortem also draws extensively on written materials about forensic pathology, medical examiners, the coroners who preceded them, and especially on the court records of the infamous 'nanny trial.' It is remarkably rich and gives us new insight into how we moderns manage death." - Carol Heimer, Northwestern University"

The University of Chicago Press Madness and Enterprise
Book SynopsisTrade Review“In this smart and sophisticated book, Bassiri shows us how an economic style of reasoning came to permeate psychiatry at the turn of the century. Not only were economic and psychiatric metaphors constantly entangled with one another but madness itself became central to economic rationalization. This book offers us a radically new perspective on the history of psychiatry. It also puts forth a fascinating philosophy of psychiatry which places irrationalism at the heart of modern capitalism.” -- Camille Robcis, Columbia University“For too long, we have accepted a contrast between madness and reason and all the more so between madness and economics. But Bassiri brilliantly demonstrates how our conceptions of madness and moral value are shot through with economic ideas, that in modern societies madness has had a fully economic rationality, that this economic rationality matters for social thought as much as for psychiatric treatments. In a historical epistemology that forces us to reread classics of modern psychology as much as relearn its story through half-forgotten intellectuals, he offers something truly original: a theory of suffering amid capitalist enterprise, and of the ways in which we can imagine a form of care unbound by a century and a half of transactional thinking.” -- Stefanos Geroulanos, New York University

The University of Chicago Press Madness and Enterprise
Book SynopsisUncovers a powerful relationship between pathology and money: beginning in the nineteenth century, the severity of mental illness was measured against a patient's economic productivity. Madness and Enterprise reveals the economic norms embedded within psychiatric thinking about mental illness in the North Atlantic world. Over the course of the nineteenth century, various forms of madness were subjected to a style of psychiatric reasoning that was preoccupied with money. Psychiatrists across Western Europe and the United States attributed financial and even moral value to an array of pathological conditions, such that some mental disorders were seen as financial assets and others as economic liabilities. By turning to economic conduct and asking whether potential patients appeared capable of managing their financial affairs or even generating wealth, psychiatrists could often bypass diagnostic uncertainties about a person's mental state. Through an exploration of the intertwined hTrade Review“In this smart and sophisticated book, Bassiri shows us how an economic style of reasoning came to permeate psychiatry at the turn of the century. Book SynopsisTrade Review"This is an excellent standalone reference for neoplastic bone pathology. It is comprehensive, but the text is clear and easy to understand. It excels in incorporating the genomic discoveries when describing each tumor entity and frequently illustrates genetic findings with helpful diagrams. Overall, this is an excellent contribution to the field of bone pathology and it will make a wonderful comprehensive reference in an institutional, departmental, or personal library." Reviewed by Andrea T. Deyrup, M.D., Ph.D. (Department of Pathology, Duke University Medical Center) "The second edition is as lavishly and beautifully illustrated as the first edition with the text as cogent as the first edition and more informative in content because of the inclusion on the growing influence (since the previous edition) of molecular pathology in the diagnosis and treatment of skeletal tumors. Highly recommended! 2018 BMA Awards: Winner, Pathology "This edition marks the start of a new era for this long-standing book. Fans of the single-authored book can rest easy, as the authors have done a wonderful job of maintaining the pragmatic approach of earlier editions. Although extensive revisions and updates have been made, they augment rather than replace the original voice of the book. Surgical pathology has grown increasingly subspecialized throughout the years, but this book still provides great value as a general reference.
