JP Medical Ltd Handbook of Direct Immunofluorescence: A

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisImmunofluorescence is a key diagnostic tool in dermatopathology, and essential in the diagnosis of connective tissue diseases, vasculitis and other cutaneous disorders. The need to interpret the results of immunofluorescence testing, and correlate these with histopathological results, is a key skill required not just of dermatopathologists but also, increasingly, of dermatologists who either read the slides themselves or use a pathology lab or academic referral centre. Handbook of Direct Immunofluorescence covers not only day-to-day findings but also less common patterns and rarities, and gives information on important diagnostic pitfalls. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific disease and is introduced by concise text that describes the clinical presentation and pathogenesis: then, multiple images show the range of histopathological and immunofluorescence findings associated with the disease in question. Key points Practical, clinically oriented coverage provides invaluable resource for dermato-, oral and general pathologists, as well as dermatologists Includes invaluable information on technical aspects (specimen procurement, transportation, etc) as well as guidance on interpreting histopathological and immunofluorescence findings Pattern-based approach serves as logical framework for reaching a diagnosis, as well as understanding when to order additional tests and how to recognise nonspecific findings Table of ContentsSection I: Epithelial intercellular staining pattern Chapter 1 Pemphigus vulgaris Chapter 2 Pemphigus vegetans Chapter 3 Pemphigus foliaceus Chapter 4 Pemphigus herpetiformis Chapter 5 IgA pemphigus Chapter 6 IgG/IgA pemphigus Section II: Epithelial nuclear staining pattern Chapter 7 Connective tissue diseases Chapter 8 Chronic ulcerative stomatitis Section III: Epithelial intercellular and basement membrane zone staining pattern Chapter 9 Paraneoplastic pemphigus Chapter 10 Pemphigus erythematosus Section IV: Linear basement membrane zone staining pattern Chapter 11 Bullous pemphigoid Chapter 12 Mucous membrane pemphigoid (cicatricial pemphigoid) Chapter 13 Epidermolysis bullosa acquisita Chapter 14 Bullous lupus erythematosus Chapter 15 Linear IgA bullous dermatosis Chapter 16 Pemphigoid gestationis (herpes gestationis) Chapter 17 Lichen planus pemphigoides Chapter 18 Anti-p200 pemphigoid Section V: Granular basement membrane zone staining pattern Chapter 19 Dermatitis herpetiformis Chapter 20 Lupus erythematosus Chapter 21 Nonspecific granular dermoepidermal junction staining Section VI: Fibrillar basement membrane zone staining pattern Chapter 22 Lichen planus Section VII: Cytoid bodies Chapter 23 Interface dermatitis/mucositis Section VIII: Granular vascular staining pattern Chapter 24 Leukocytoclastic vasculitis Chapter 25 Henoch–Schönlein purpura Chapter 26 Nonspecific granular vascular staining Section IX: Smooth vascular staining pattern Chapter 27 Porphyria cutanea tarda Chapter 28 Pseudoporphyria Chapter 29 Nonspecific smooth vascular staining

Book SynopsisThis book covers the full spectrum of benign and malignant conditions of the genitourinary tract with emphasis on common entities encountered in daily practice. The volume is heavily illustrated and contains useful algorithms that guide the reader through the differential diagnosis and cyto-histologic correlation of common and uncommon entities with appropriate clinical correlations. This book will serve as a valuable quick reference for pathologists, cytopathologists, cytotechnologists, fellows and residents in the field. Genitourinary system cytopathology specimens and small biopsies are common specimens, with a growing number of renal fine needle aspirations and core biopsy procedures being performed each year. Genitourinary System Cytology and Small Biopsy Specimens focuses on the correlation between urinary tract cytology and surgical pathology, including the evaluation of germ cell tumor metastasis to distant sites. Aspiration and exfoliative cytology samples obtained from all areas of and related to the genitourinary tract are highlighted in individualized chapters for these entities. The growing body of information in personalized medicine and molecular discoveries in the field of genitourinary pathology demands focus as well; hence an integrated approach to molecular diagnostics is presented in each chapter. In summary, this book will provide an illustrative and algorithmic approach to every day practice of genitourinary cytopathology and small biopsy material, using appropriate cytologic-histologic correlation format and incorporating recent updates in terminology, guidelines, and ancillary studies.Table of ContentsUrinary Tract Exfoliative Cytology & Biopsy Specimens: Non-Neoplastic Findings.- Urinary Tract Exfoliative Cytology & Biopsy Specimens: Low Grade Urothelial Neoplasms.- Urinary Tract Exfoliative Cytology & Biopsy Specimens: High Grade Urothelial Carcinoma.- Urinary Tract Exfoliative Cytology & Biopsy Specimens: Other Urothelial Tract Neoplasms.- Renal Fine Needle Aspiration & Core Biopsy Specimens: Renal Cell Carcinomas.- Renal Fine Needle Aspiration & Core Biopsy Specimens: Urothelial Carcinoma and other Non-Renal Malignancies.- Renal Fine Needle Aspiration & Core Biopsy Specimens: Benign Entities and Non-Neoplastic Findings.- Adrenal Gland.- Fine Needle Aspiration & Core Biopsy Specimens: Germ Cell Neoplasms.- Miscellaneous Lesions of the Genitourinary System.

  • Molecular Determinants of Head and Neck Cancer

Birkhauser Verlag AG Molecular Determinants of Head and Neck Cancer

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisSquamous cell cancers of the head and neck (SCCHN), also known as head and neck cancers (HNC) encompass malignancies of the oral cavity, larynx, nasopharynx and pharynx, and are diagnosed in over 500,000 patients worldwide each year, accounting for 5% of all malignancies. It is estimated that approximately 50,000 patients develop head and neck cancer annually in the United States, of whom approximately 50% succumb to this cancer. For most cases of SCCHN, treatment is multimodal, often combining surgery or irradiation with chemotherapy; even successfully treated patients frequently experience durable and severe side effects. Improving cure rates and reducing chronic morbidity are urgent clinical needs for head and neck cancer. However, in contrast to cancer types such as breast or prostate that have been much studied and have well-defined biology, until recently, relatively few researchers investigated the molecular basis of HNC, making it difficult to design targeted treatments with better efficacy and less debilitating side effects. This volume will provide an overview of the factors contributing to disease pathogenesis, including the recognition of discrete molecular subtypes with distinct etiology, prognosis, and treatment response. This volume will familiarize the reader with the critical signaling pathways and oncogenic drivers for HNC. It will outline the differences between HPV-positive and HPV-negative disease, and how these differences affect treatment choice and outcome. The book will emphasize developments in the past five years, including the growing understanding of the genomic and epigenomic features of the disease based on analysis of next generation sequencing (NGS) data, and timely topics such as the analysis of HNC stem cell populations, non-coding mRNAs, and inflammatory response. It will address exciting new therapeutic approaches such as the use of immunotherapies to treat HNC patients. Overall, the book will provide the reader with current understanding of the biology and treatment of the disease, and describe timely questions that will guide future research aimed at controlling and curing this disease.Trade Review“The book is intended primarily for clinicians, fellows, interns, and trainees, but medical students who may be interested in head and neck cancer but face the challenge of updating themselves on the latest innovations may also find this book very useful. … this is an informative and authoritative book on the subject that includes experiences from clinicians and scientists working on head and neck cancer at some of the most renowned cancer centers in the world.” (Ravi Salgia, Doody's Book Reviews, March, 2019)Table of ContentsChapter 1: Overview: B. Book SynopsisThis book provides a fundamental understanding of immunopathology and immunopathologic processes, with particular attention to nonclinical toxicology studies. Chapters provide organ system–based summaries of spontaneous pathology and common responses to xenobiotics. A companion volume, Immunopathology in Toxicology and Drug Development: Volume 1, Immunobiology, Investigative Techniques, and Special Studies, offers an overview of general immunobiology, cells of the immune system, signaling and effector molecules, and immunopathology assays. These informative and strategic books were created in response to the large segment of drug development that focuses on chronic diseases, many of which involve alterations to the immune system. Therapies that target these diseases commonly involve some form of immunomodulation. As a result, the two volumes of Immunopathology in Toxicology and Drug Development are critical texts for individuals involved in diverse aspects of drug development. Readers will acquire a thorough understanding of immunopathology for detection and accurate interpretation of pathologic effects of xenobiotics on the immune system. Trade Review“The purpose is to provide organ system-based summaries of spontaneous pathology and common responses to xenobiotics. … used as a textbook or reference for students, as an informative resource for novices in the field, and as a reference for researchers in the immune toxicology field. It also can be educational for the lay public who are interested in learning immunopathology in xenobiotics or general basic immunology. … a terrific book that I will certainly integrate into my graduate teaching.” (Hongmin Ni, Doody's Book Reviews, November, 2017)Table of ContentsThymus.- Spleen.- Lymph node.- Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues.- Immunopathology of the nervous system.- Immunopathology of the urinary system.- Immunopathology of the hepatobiliary system.- Immunopathology of the respiratory system.- Immunopathology of the cardiovascular system.- Immunopathology of the male reproductive tract.- Immunopathology of the female reproductive tract and mammary gland.- Immunopathology of the musculoskeletal system.- Immunopathology of the endocrine system.- Ocular Immunopathology.- Immunopathology of Drug and Toxin-related Skin Reactions.

During the international course on neuroradiology in Obernai, organized by Professor Wackenheim in 1978, an entire day was devoted to discussions about various aspects of stenosis of the lumbar vertebral canal. As Professor Wackenheim and his group, in particular Dr. E. Babin, had thorough· ly studied this field, it was an excellent occasion for the exchange of views through personal contact. Their support of basic views such as attributing the cause of stenosis to a developmental disturbance of growth of the neural element - the vertebral arc- and spontaneous agreement about essentials in classification and nomenclature facili tated this exchange. Reading the present monograph made me think back to 1949 when I wrote my first publication on stenosis of the lumbar vertebral canal in a French volume that com memorated my teacher in neurosurgery, Professor Clovis Vincent. During the following years it was impossible to publish a more detailed paper on the subject in international journals since their editorial boards did not believe in its occurrence. My first English papers were published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (1954, 1955), but it was only during the 1970s that this form of stenosis became more universally recog nized.Table of ContentsA. Book SynopsisSudden death is an uncommon condition. But when it occurs, especially in a young person, the acute loss can generate a substantial amount of grief with a great sense of disbelief. This mysterious and dreadful condition instils much fear and anxiety into the living, and more specifically for family members and friends. Understandably, the apprehension is brought about by the unexpectedness of the event and uncertainty of the consequences. The feeling of uneasiness is largely attributed to the lack of information regarding this condition. However in recent years, several causes of sudden death have been clarified. Treatment modalities have improved and reduced the occurrence of dying suddenly. This book is meant for anyone who wants to know more about sudden death. It aims to diminish its terror by explaining the various conditions that predispose individuals to sudden death and ways which may prevent it from occurring.

  • Neurodegeneration

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Neurodegeneration

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisMost textbooks on neurodegenerative disorders have used a classification scheme based upon either clinical syndromes or anatomical distribution of the pathology. In contrast, this book looks to the future and uses a classification based upon molecular mechanisms, rather than clinical or anatomical boundaries. Major advances in molecular genetics and the application of biochemical and immunocytochemical techniques to neurodegenerative disorders have generated this new approach. Throughout most of the current volume, diseases are clustered according to the proteins that accumulate within cells (e.g. tau, a-synuclein and TDP-43) and in the extracellular compartments (e.g. ß-amyloid and prion proteins) or according to a shared pathogenetic mechanism, such as trinucleotide repeats, that are a feature of specific genetic disorders. Chapters throughout the book conform to a standard lay-out for ease of access by the reader and are written by a panel Trade Review“Overall, this textbook provides useful and systematic information on the basic mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases. It will provide useful for resident trainees, neurologists and pathologists.” (Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences, 1 November 2012) Table of ContentsList of Contributors, viii Preface, xii List of Abbreviations, xiii Part 1 Introduction: Basic Mechanisms of Neurodegeneration 1 Introduction to Neurodegeneration: The Molecular Pathology of Dementia and Movement Disorders, 3 Dennis W. Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe interpretation of melanocytic tumors represents probably the most difficult task in the field of dermatopathology. The second edition of this text and atlas depicts a broad range of the most important and most challenging melanocytic lesions. Each individual case is illustrated with at least three high-quality color photographs and is commented on at length, highlighting the diagnostic clues. The goal of the authors is to assist the ordinary pathologist in making a precise workable diagnosis in their daily practice. They achieve this by providing simple criteria that will serve as a sound basis for an unequivocal diagnosis of either a benign or a malignant melanocytic neoplasm. The reader will find Histological Diagnosis of Nevi and Melanoma to be an invaluable guide to correct diagnosis even in difficult or rare cases.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews of the second edition:“The book provides a logical, practical classification of melanocytic lesions, using the terminology most frequently used in dermatopathology laboratories. … This is a necessary book that provides useful information for both clinicians and pathologists. … This is a unique, comprehensive source of information for melanocytic lesion histopathology, and a likely must have for pathologists, dermatopathologists, and dermatologists.” (Susan M. • Violence: Reflections on Our Deadliest Epidemic

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Violence: Reflections on Our Deadliest Epidemic

Book SynopsisJames Gilligan lays the foundation for a complete re-thinking of the nature and meaning of violence in society. He reveals the motives of men who commit horrifying crimes, men who not only kill other people, but also destroy themselves rather than suffer shame and loss of self-respect.He focuses on how feelings of shame cause violent and vengeful behaviour, and argues that conventional punitive legal and penal systems which are based on notions of justice and retribution perpetuate violent behaviour. He was called in to the Massachusetts prison system because of the high rates of suicides and murders within state prisons there; when he left these rates had dropped almost to zero. This keenly argued and ground-breaking book is essential reading for everyone touched by violence, and all those who are working to prevent it and its consequencesTrade ReviewJames Gilligan has written a stunning book about violence. As a psychiatrist who has spent twenty-five years of his professional life treating men who committed murder, Gilligan draws poignantly on his work with prisoners to help us understand what motivates desperate men. In the end, he offers a compelling psychoanalytic explanation of violence while calling on society to take social, economic and cultural measures to help prevent the 'deadly epidemic' from spreading. -- Judith Friedlander, PhD., Dean of the Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science, New School for Social ResearchDr. Gilligan offers a personal and passionate summing up of his decades of empathic clinical work with men who have committed horrible crimes, and he succeeds in deepening our understanding of their inner lives, the dark world of prisons they inhabit, and the violence that pervades... society. -- Donald J. Cohen, M.D., Director, Yale Child Study CenterExtraordinary. Gilligan's recommendations concerning what does work to prevent violence...are extremely convincing...A wise and careful, enormously instructive book. -- Owen Renik, M.D., editor * Psychoanalytic Quarterly *Important and absorbing...a valuable book deserving a widespread and thoughtful readership. -- Norval Morris, Boston Globe, former Dean of University of Chicago Law SchoolTable of ContentsPrologue: Violence as Tragedy. • Tumors of the Pancreas

American Registry of Pathology Tumors of the Pancreas

Book SynopsisFree digital access available with every print purchase. See inside the book for more details. While classification of pancreatic neoplasms has not evolved significantly since 2007, data related to the molecular underpinnings that characterize each type of neoplasm have grown exponentially in the past 15 years. The current multimodal study of pancreatic neoplasms has allowed a better understanding of tumor biology, more closely linking the mor¬phologic findings with clinical outcomes and targeted treatment. The prognosis of conventional pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma remains very poor, but some promise is on the horizon based on novel treatment approaches and the increase in earlier diagnosis. Furthermore, intensive study of other pancreatic neoplasms has led to a clearer recognition that each type has distinctive biology and behavior that is often not so highly aggressive. This sense of optimism may help drive a resurgence of interest in pancreatic pathology.
