Laurence King Publishing History of Modern Design Third Edition
Book SynopsisThis unparalleled and wide-ranging book surveys the history of applied arts and industrial design from the eighteenth century to the present day, exploring the dynamic relationship between design and manufacturing, and the technological, social and commercial contexts in which this relationship has developed. In this extensively revised and expanded third edition, David Raizman addresses international questions more fully with the addition of six Global Inspiration sections that examine the contributions of non-Western traditions, rendering the very notion of a ''national'' design debatable. The text also pays closer attention to issues of gender, race, and climate change, and their impact on design. With over 580 illustrations, mostly in colour, History of Modern Design is an inclusive, well-balanced introduction to a field of increasing scholarly and interdisciplinary research, and provides students in design with historical perspectives of their chosen fields of study.

Princeton University Press Global Objects
Book SynopsisTrade Review"[A] remarkably insightful book. . . . [Global Objects] illustrates how the hegemony of power attributed to ‘fine art’, as distinguished from objects that have a utility in our daily lives, has resulted in a poverty of taste as well as the perpetuation of self-fulfilling prophecies about the importance of the so called ‘sublime’ in the construction of civilizations."---Donald Brackett, Critics at Large"A fascinating Tintin-esque history of many human artifacts that have truly global pedigrees. . . . An interesting read."---Jesse Russell, University Bookman"Challenging the binaries of Western versus Other and “high” versus “low” art in this book, Cooke presents a revisionist approach to global material culture that frames art objects as embodiments of social interactions across space and time. Global Objects. . .makes material culture studies digestible to individuals who seek to understand objects beyond the traditional fields of Western art history . . . [and] presents a necessary methodological revision to material culture studies in the post-colonial era."---Yasmine Yakupper, 21: Inquiries into Art, History, and the Visual – Beiträge zur Kunstgeschichte und visuellen Kultur"One of the great successes of Cooke’s Global Objects is it is an analysis based on a significant number of case studies, a corpus of considerable scale. The attention paid to the objects themselves and the important place they occupy in the whole of Cooke’s study, both visually and in terms of the narrative, make Global Objects a solid and handsome contribution to the history of art."---Noémie Etienne, The Art Bulletin

Amber Books Ltd Haunted Places
Book SynopsisThe strange cries heard at night in a dilapidated penitentiary, the glimpse of a ‘White Lady’ floating through a graveyard, the face at the window in a room that has been locked for decades – stories of hauntings never cease to intrigue us. Abrams Trimmings
Book SynopsisTrimmings details the history of Declercq’s passementerie, the fine art of detail in haute couture. In 1852, Joseph Bertaud bought a small trimmings factory in Paris that had been making passementerie since 1760. Although passementerie—the woven textile accessories adorning furniture and clothing in the form of a fringe, tassel, braid, crest, and beyond—reached France in the Middle Ages, the house continues to uphold the excellence and pass down the history of the Declercq Passementiers factory 170 years later. Having collaborated with major institutions such as Versailles and Chantilly and prestigious decorators and architects such as Jacques Grange, Patrick Frey, Franck Sorbier, Mathieu Lehanneur, Michel Charrière, Joseph Achkar, Jamie Drakeet, Gabhan O’Keefe, and François-Joseph Graf, the factory has withstood the test of time and adapted to the fluctuating fashions in vogue in decoration.

Amber Books Ltd Abandoned Islands
Book SynopsisExploring some of the world’s eeriest places, Abandoned Islands features American civil war forts, Europe’s last leper colony and South Atlantic whaling stations, along with once grand mansions and colonial settlements and churches, and much more. Arranged geographically, the book takes us from New York’s East River to islands off Alaska, from a French Napoleonic-era fort off the coast of Normandy to deserted villages on remote Scottish isles, from Venetian sanatoria to Croatian penal colonies, Japanese mining colonies to Sudanese deserted ports and abandoned atolls in the Indian Ocean. Leafing through these pages, the reasons for abandonment are revealed: climate change sealing off fresh water or river channels, shifting economic forces making life too hard, religious conflict, or wars disrupting daily life – or the absence of war rendering a military settlement unnecessary. With more than 180 outstanding colour photographs and fascinating captions, Abandoned Islands is a brilliant pictorial exploration of lost worlds.Table of ContentsContents Introduction AMERICAS: Devon Island, Nunavut, Canada Attu Island, Alaska, United States Guard Island, Alaska, United States D’Arcy Island, British Columbia, Canada Herschel Island, Yukon, Canada McNabs Island, Nova Scotia, Canada L’Îsle-aux-Marins, St Pierre and Miquelon Caribou Island, Ontario, Canada Turtle Island, Michigan and Ohio, United States Año Nuevo Island, California, United States Alcatraz Island, California, United States Pollepel Island, New York, United States North Brother Island, New York, United States Hart Island, New York, United States Ellis Island, New York, United States Fort Carroll, Maryland, United States Holland Island, Maryland, United States Cumberland Island, Georgia, United States Fort Jefferson, Florida, United States La Isla de las Muñecas, Mexico Devil’s Island, French Guiana Klein Curaçao, Curaçao Gorgona Island, Colombia Ilha da Queimada Grande, Brazil Lobos de Tierra, Peru Keppel Island, Falkland Islands EUROPE: Dragonera, Balearic Islands, Spain Danskøya, Svalbard, Norway Helgøya, Norway Elliðaey, Iceland Gruinard, Scotland Cara, Scotland Castle Stalker, Scotland Loch an Eilein, Scotland Mingulay, Scotland Shillay, Scotland Scarba, Scotland Hirta, St Kilda, Scotland Devenish, Northern Ireland Great Blasket, Ireland Innisfallen, Ireland Inishmurray, Ireland Skellig Michael, Ireland St Catherine’s, Wales Stack Rock Fort, Wales Thorne Island Fort, Wales Samson, Isles of Scilly, England No Man’s Land Fort, England Cézembre, France Gavrinis, France Île du Large, Îsles St-Marcouf, France Dragonera, Balearic Islands, Spain Gaiola, Italy Isola dei Cappuccini, Sardinia, Italy Isola delle Correnti, Sicily, Italy Torre Scola, Italy Madonna del Monte, Italy Poveglia, Italy Comino, Malta Daksa, Croatia Sveti Grgur, Croatia Sveti Andrija, Croatia Baljenac, Croatia Goli Otok, Croatia Mamula, Montenegro Delos, Greece Spinalonga, Crete, Greece Aniva Lighthouse, Sakhalin, Russia Kolyuchin, Russia Bolshoy Zayatsky, Russia Bolshoy Tyuters, Russia Fort Alexander, Russia MIDDLE EAST & AFRICA: Gemiler, Turkey Islet on Lake Bafa, Turkey Sedir, Turkey Bunce, Sierra Leone Tigres, Angola St Croix, South Africa Central, Kenya Suakin, Sudan Tiran, Saudi Arabia Chagos Archipelago Nosy Mangabe, Madagascar ASIA & THE PACIFIC: Boyuk Zira, Azerbaijan Middle Ground Coastal Battery, India Ross Island, Andaman Islands, India Houtouwan, Shengshan, China Gajajima, Japan Hashima, Japan Okunoshima, Japan Sarah, Tasmania, Australia Maria, Tasmania, Australia Whitsunday, Australia Nan Madol, Federated States of Micronesia Antipodes Islands, New Zealand Adams Island, New Zealand Enderby, New Zealand Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands Clipperton, France Howland, United States Tetepare, Solomon Islands Deception Island, Antarctica

3DTotal Publishing Ltd The Field Guide to Witches: An artist’s grimoire
Book SynopsisStep into a world of witchcraft both good and evil, where the iconic character of myth and legend is once more brought uniquely to life. From the first alleged witch to be hanged in Salem, and Goya’s depictions of witchcraft, to Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Hogwarts, and beyond, there is no shortage of inspiration, but also of recycled characterizations and central-casting stereotypes. Now, 30 of the world’s most talented fantasy and concept artists discover their own, personal manifestation of the witch. Starting with research, readers will witness the alchemy of details extracted from the seemingly mundane transformed the whole body of the witch, fantastical yet unnervingly believable at the same time. The design process goes on to cast spells not only on appearance, but also the environment, practices, and magical belongings of this one-of-a-kind witch. With the final design depicted as both a line drawing and in full color, the whole character and their world is defined. A summary of each witch details their background, behaviour, strengths, weaknesses and, of course, powers. The result is 320 pages encased in a beautifully finished hardback cover, the ultimate field guide to designing witches that transcend time, place, and even the most vivid imagination.

Thames and Hudson Ltd Floral Patterns of India
Book SynopsisA unique combination of photography and illustration reveals an extraordinary variety of floral motifs in the historical buildings of India: 'A jewel of a book' Embroidery magazine Following the success of Pattern and Ornament in the Arts of India, Henry Wilson has turned, for this companion volume, to a single theme. But what a theme: the variety of floral motifs in the exquisitely wrought details of India's architectural wonders is boundless, and one can only marvel at the way in which the basic elements of wood, stone and plaster have been transformed into masterworks of decorative art. From the illustrious Mughal Empire during its greatest period of monument-building and artistic creativity to the time of British rule, which brought with it an unprecedented period of peace that allowed great wealth to be concentrated on the arts, the richness of India's architecture is overwhelming. Henry Wilson's fine photographs reveal the skill, patience and imagination of the many thousands of craftsmen who have turned to floral motifs and rendered them with precision and life-enriching creativity. Juxtaposed with the photographs are Wilson's own detailed drawings, all created by hand but with a stencil-like clarity that helps us understand the original historical patterns. The result is an invaluable sourcebook that will appeal not only to those interested in one of the world's oldest civilizations and greatest cultures, but also to anyone seeking inspiration for their own creations.

Book SynopsisAn innovative approach in the field of material culture and consumption studies, Life in the Georgian Parsonage looks at the houses, consumption and lifestyle of Church of England clergy in the long 18th century, linking moral debates and popular representations of the clergy to the material culture of their houses and their motivations as consumers. By focusing on ethical and moral dimensions of consumer practices, it challenges established readings of consumption in the long 18th century as an essentially secular process in which goods were markers of wealth, status and taste, by bringing the clergyman into the frame their lives, their habits and their homes. Cross-disciplinary in its approach, combining material culture and religious and social history and sitting at the intersection of these fields, Life in the Georgian Parsonage fills a significant gap, enhancing in important ways our knowledge of this group as a crucial but understudied set of 18th-century consume

Book SynopsisBetween 1750 and 1840, the home took on unprecedented social and emotional significance. Focusing on the design, decoration, and reception of a range of elite and middling class homes from this period, Domestic Space in Britain, 1750-1840 demonstrates that the material culture of domestic life was central to how this function of the home was experienced, expressed, and understood at this time. Examining craft production and collection, gift exchange and written description, inheritance and loss, it carefully unpacks the material processes that made the home a focus for contemporaries' social and emotional lives. The first book on its subject, Domestic Space in Britain, 1750-1840 employs methodologies from both art history and material culture studies to examine previously unpublished interiors, spaces, texts, images, and objects. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Chinoiserie
Book SynopsisChinoiserie, a decorative style inspired by the art of the Far East, gripped Britain from the late seventeenth to the early nineteenth century. Despite taking its name from the French word for ‘Chinese’, the style also incorporated influences from other Asian countries, helping to shape the period’s popular fantasy of the ‘exotic Orient’. Wealthy consumers jostled to obtain imported wallpaper, lacquered cabinets and hand-painted porcelain, while domestic manufacturers such as Royal Worcester and Chippendale met demand with mass-produced items of their own. Though interest in the style waned as the Gothic Revival took hold, many examples of Chinoiserie have been preserved. In this beautifully illustrated book, Richard Hayman tells the story of this fascinating phenomenon, and explores the profound impact of Chinoiserie on the material culture of the West.Trade ReviewWith over 50 full-colour illustrations, this small book is a delightful and informative introduction to an interesting phenomenon. * The Historian *Table of ContentsChinese Whispers Anglo-Chinese Trade The Chinese Room Objects Chinese Buildings Revival Further Reading Places to visit Index

This book is the first wide-ranging study of this once highly important company. It will give insights into the workings and productions of a London furnishing business in the period. It also provides information on a wide variety of topics including furniture design developments, interior design styles, business practices, working practices and techniques, and the firm’s customers and competitors. Clive Edwards first considers the structure of the London ‘art furniture’ trade and its development to locate the firm in its community. He then traces the growth of the firm’s business, its involvement with important international exhibitions, the designers they worked with, and the furniture and interiors they produced. This important book then outlines and discusses Collinson & Lock’s creations ranging from seminal pieces that were designed for an exclusive clientele, to those displayed at national and international exhibitions between 1871 and 1900, through to batch produced objects that still maintained the quality and design that the firm was famous for. The involvement of the firm with both public and private interior decoration commissions is also examined through case studies, including those in the Anglo-Japanese, Queen Anne, Old English, and Renaissance styles used in the later Victorian period. Drawing on the author's extensive knowledge of nineteenth-century furniture and interiors, this book meets a need for a fully researched and illustrated reference work on this famous firm. If you have an interest in the history of furniture and interior design, if you are involved with furniture collections either on a private basis or professionally, or you simply have an interest in the decorative arts and culture of the period, this book should be on your shelves.

Ashmolean Museum The Beauty of Bronze
Book SynopsisA visually stunning introduction to the world of European bronze sculptures, seen through the remarkable collections of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. This book looks at bronze through the remarkable collections of European bronze sculptures in the Ashmolean Museum of the University of Oxford. Largely thanks to the generosity of Charles Drury Edward Fortnum (1820-1899), the Ashmolean houses one of the world’s great collections of Renaissance and Baroque small bronzes. The book provides a survey of the collection and an overview of the development of small bronze sculpture during a period of six centuries running from c.1200 to around 1800, although most of the works illustrated here were made within the shorter time frame of c.1450-1650. Any such survey is inevitably shaped by the strengths of the collection, which is conditioned by Fortnum’s taste, notwithstanding later acquisitions that have broadened its scope. He especially loved earlier Italian bronzes and so-called utensils — objects such as inkstands, candlesticks, salt-cellars, mirrors and seals — that are functional as well as beautiful. Fortnum was less interested in sculpture from the later 1500s onwards although, as this selection shows, he acquired some very interesting bronzes from the 17th and 18th centuries that deserve to be better known.
