Princeton University Press Between Worlds
Book SynopsisTrade Review"Honorable Mention for the George Wittenborn Memorial Book Award, Art Libraries Society of North America""One of the New York Times' Best Art Books of 2018""A Choice Outstanding Academic Title of the Year""The most thrilling book of the year."---Roberta Smith, New York Times"[A] remarkable catalogue, which exhaustively lays out what can be known of Traylor’s life, in its historical context, and of the references in his art."---Peter Schjeldahl, New Yorker"Traylor’s images . . . now count among the greatest works of 20th-century American art, and thanks to a magnificent catalogue, the artist is obscure no more."---Roberta Smith, New York Times"[A] major monograph."---Karen Wilkin, Wall Street Journal"The detective work in Between Worlds is so engrossing that one may be forgiven for forgetting that the book is also an exhibition catalogue. It accompanies an extensive retrospective, now at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC, of Bill Traylor’s paintings and drawings. Traylor, who died in 1949, is considered one of the most important 'folk' or 'self-taught' American artists. But this project demonstrates in magisterial manner how his work exceeds these limiting categories. . . . Umberger is refreshingly blunt about the art world’s racial politics, the persistence and consequences of gatekeeping, and the way categories like 'folk art' marginalize the makers of those pieces. She offers deep research into the artist’s like and work as a welcome remedy."---Siddhartha Mitter, Bookforum"Between Worlds pairs a painstakingly detailed biography with an expansive, object-orientated analysis, the former serving as foundation for the latter."---Annie Monahan, Burlington Magazine"Leslie Umberger’s compelling text, the result of extensive research, details the social and political context to Traylor’s life and art, and pieces together as much as possible of his family history." * Art Quarterly *"This meticulously researched catalogue . . . serves as a corrective to the persistent stereotyping of black art as primitive. . . . Now, with the Smithsonian exhibition and accompanying catalogue, Bill Traylor’s testimony is available to the wider world."---Fran Bigman, Times Literary Supplement"[A] major undertaking. . . . [The book] includes chapters on the world in which [Traylor] lived, carefully documented by biographical details from surviving records, and discusses the emergence of his talent during an active period in late life while recounting how his preserved work captured the attention of the art world decades after his death."---Karla Klein Albertson, Antiques and the Arts"[A] groundbreaking monograph in which Umberger thoroughly reassesses the known facts of Traylor’s life and family, his creative trajectory, and the art world’s discovery of him and positions him within the broader context of American art." * ARTFIX daily *"Between Worlds: The Art of Bill Traylor discusses and illustrates 205 of Traylor’s works, images that are powerfully backdropped by the times he lived in."---Shannon Heupel, Montgomery Advertiser"Between Worlds: The Art of Bill Traylor is a genuinely unfathomable account. . . . Umberger takes great care in flushing out the worlds between that Traylor’s depictions historically dangled. . . . With over 200 drawings reproduced as examples of various techniques or themes, there is much information to digest. Umberger’s unsurpassed skill as a historian and writer, cuts easily through it all revealing depth and dimension. For the reader not intimidated by the bulk of this volume, approaching six pounds, there is much reward and there are too many insights to list. Even 70 years after his death, his life experience remains critically important to our contemporary settings."---Cindy Helms, New York Journal of Books"[Leslie] Umberger emerges as the finest interpreter of Traylor’s life and career, proving that she is an American curator and art historian of the first order. . . . At long last, Bill Traylor’s artwork takes center stage to speak to viewers of the pasts of the present. . . . Between Worlds is a testament to the enduring, inclusive genius of Bill Traylor, a man who came from slavery to make a world all his own. Traylor’s paintings remind us of the indomitable creative spirit, enduring beyond this nation’s sins."---Andrew M. Davenport, Los Angeles Review of Books"A major contribution [and] essential reading for anyone who wants to understand American art in the twentieth century. . . . Umberger’s scrupulously researched book fill[s] in many gaps while overturning long-held assumptions, misinformation and misguided theories about the artist and his work. . . . Umberger writes at length about the historical and cultural circumstances within which Traylor lived and made his art. She fills in a richly detailed background, presents the most complete picture of his life to date, and casts revealing new light on his art. Positioning his work firmly within a cultural context, she rejects any notion of him as an outsider."---Tom Patterson, Raw Vision"[Leslie Umberger’s] curated volume of Traylor’s life and work is a narrative and visual accomplishment; a beautifully-presented book that captures the marvel and struggle of Traylor’s life, and the uniqueness of his work."---Nick Ripatrazone, Angelus News"Umberger does justice to [Bill Traylor’s] work and his life story . . . . [a] wonderful book." * Rethinking History *"Leslie Umberger’s monumental catalogue, Between Worlds: The Art of Bill Traylor, which accompanied her 2018 exhibition at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, is a stunning, intensely researched, and moving tribute to a unique figure in the history of American art . . . . The catalogue, which includes more than two hundred gorgeous illustrations of artworks from public and private collections, along with ample reproductions of archival material and historical photographs, make it not only the most comprehensive resource for Traylor’s work, but also an excellent one for those interested in the history of the American South. A bold and brilliant text, contained inside a beautifully produced object, Between Worlds sets the standard for the type of critical scholarship that can be done on an artist once discounted as marginal or an outsider."---Aleesa Pitchamarn Alexander, Panorama: Journal of the Association of Historians of American Art

Book SynopsisA survey of spectacular breadth, covering the history of decorative arts and design worldwide over the past six hundred yearsTrade Review"For those with deep pockets this season, the best titles are undoubtedly Susan Weber and Pat Kirkham’s History of Design, which is both a stunning visual survey of 600 years of making, and an in-depth look at the evolution of the very idea of design itself."—Michael Glover, The Independent"Masterminded by Susan Weber, founder of New York’s prestigious Bard Graduate Center for the study of decorative arts, the book is the culmination of a long-cherished aim to create an authoritative reference work treating the design and cultural context of useful and decorative artefacts with the same degree of intellectual rigour and enthusiasm that is generally accorded in scholarly circles only to painting and sculpture."—Stephen Calloway, House & Garden Magazine"This ambitious survey, which has been produced by the Bard Graduate Center in New York, grew out of the perceived lack of a satisfactory introduction to the applied arts that spanned historical and geographical borders. It looks set to fix that, gathering together 'adventurous scholars' and illustrating their incisive contributions with an excellent range of high-quality images."—Apollo Magazine"History of Design is a remarkable achievement and should play a central role for encouraging the ongoing studies of decorative arts and design among students, and, one hopes, a broader public."—Christopher Menz, Australian Book Review"This is an excellent resource not only for its breadth of content and its structure, but the opportunity it affords to approach and critically discuss the development of designed objects in relationship to their own cultures within a globalized world."—Carla Cesare, Journal of Design History

Book SynopsisThe Green Man has many facets, many dimensions. He peers through his leaf mask in hundreds of church misericords and stone carvings. His innate link with the changing seasons and fertility is revealed in the medieval poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and in summer folk customs such as Jack in the Green, the Castleton Garland and the Burry Man. Perhaps he even lurks in the legendary hero of the Greenwood, Robin Hood. The Authors have been running summer schools and courses on the Green Man for many years, and in this fascinating study they discuss his significance in medival times and explore the modern development of the concept of the Green Man. Rizzoli International Publications Frances Elkins
Book SynopsisThe first comprehensive book on the timeless, elegant interiors of Frances Elkins, the grande dame of early twentieth-century design who influenced so many important designers of our time.Trade Review"Nearly anything that registers as great interior design in the 2020s appeared in legendary interior designer Frances Elkins’s rooms in the 1920s. Her projects were replete with warm tones, interesting tile, and a mix of modern, vintage, and antique furniture. Bamboo dining chairs in a Chippendale style? Elkins did that. That thing you’re calling “granny chic?” Elkins had you beat." —IN KANSAS CITY"Regarded by many as the grande dame of 20th-century design, Frances Elkins brought an international perspective and architectural sensibility to her work that nobody had seen before. This new monograph showcases never-before-published material from the groundbreaking decorator that illustrates her ability to effortlessly mix styles and vivid colors." —VERANDA"Among a trove of images and magazine spreads of rooms Elkins designed, Powell also includes interiors dotted with furniture and fabric collaborations between Elkins and Frank, as well as architects including her brother David Adler. Famed decorator Billy Baldwin called her “the most creative designer we have ever had, and perhaps the greatest,” and here her influential work stands in concert with fellow Northern California innovators Anthony Hail, Michael Taylor and John Dickinson." ~ C Magazine"Elkins favored chic modernist European furniture, including the white plaster shell sconces, shell ceiling lights and twisted floor lamps designed by Alberto Giacometti for Jean-Michel Frank, or her own authorized copies. The Giacometti-style pieces later became basics of San Francisco interior designer Michael Taylor, who considered Elkins the most advanced designer he knew. “Elkins was a free spirit and mixed things that hadn’t been mixed before,” he told Dupuy Warrick Reed, writing for Connoisseur magazine in 1983. “She was experimental in scale and approach.” " ~Nob Hill Gazette"She collaborated with luminaries like Syrie Maugham, Marion Dorn, Dorothy Liebes, Alberto Giacometti and Jean-Michel Frank to specify teal and tangerine upholstery, mermaid murals and creamy ridged carpets. She turned glass pillars into gossamer balusters and spiraled a crimson-carpeted staircase around a stack of clear plastic balls. Plaster hands served as holdbacks on her fringed, plaid curtains." ~ NY Times

Vendome Press Objects of Desire
Book Synopsis Objects of Desire is a personal celebration of the hunt for and the joy of living with favorite collections and things. What is it in our homes that we truly value and why? What would you take when you leave in fear of fire? Our home is an expression of ourselves in many ways, largely through the objects we accumulate. For Maria Hummer-Tuttle, the objects she has collected over the years—from the priceless to the flea-market finds—are precious not only for their beauty, uniqueness, and craftsmanship, but also for their connection to the past and the future, for their resonance with one another. In this exquisitely illustrated book, Hummer-Tuttle serves as our guide through three dwellings, focusing our attention on objects ranging from an ancient Chinese horse sculpture to a Louis XV clock painted with characters from an Aesop fable, from a small snail sculpture found in a venerable hardware store to a monumental safety pin sculpture by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, from 18th-century to 20th-century furniture. With a foreword by master ceramicist and acclaimed author Edmund de Waal and featuring two lavish gatefolds and metallic edge stain, Objects of Desire is a feast for the eyes and a cherished object in its own right.Includes color photographs byMiguel Flores‑Vianna

Museum of Fine Arts,Boston Louis Comfort Tiffany
Book SynopsisA stunning stained glass window becomes a lens through which to view the career of Louis Comfort Tiffany and intersecting arcs of art and design in America. The story of the Parakeets stained glass window from national and international recognition to years of obscurity, followed by a return to the limelight parallels the public reception of the art of its maker, Louis Comfort Tiffany, who had one of the most recognized names in American art at the turn of the twentieth century. It is a story of artistic ambition and experimentation, of nationalist pride and promotion, and of the capricious nature of public opinion and the art market. A careful study of the fabrication, imagery, and life of the window offers an intimate look into the legacy of Tiffany, as well as the nineteenth-century revival of the lesser-known medium of stained glass, which some argue was the United States' first major contribution to the international art world.

Book SynopsisMiranda Garrett is Exhibitions Manager at the Bank of England Museum, UK.Zoë Thomas is Lecturer in Nineteenth-Century Britain and the Wider World at the University of Birmingham, UK.Trade ReviewThis insightful edited collection extends and enhances our understanding of the relationships between artistic endeavour, commercial enterprise and political activism ... An invaluable contribution to understandings of visual and material culture and art and business history, as well as to suffrage and women's studies. * History Today *I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which has been beautifully produced. In a series of engaging chapters the authors contribute significantly to our knowledge about the suffrage movement covering aspects of the campaign that have been often overlooked. It also gives a voice to the many women artists who are often lost in political histories or histories on women’s art. * Women's History Review *[The book's] careful curation presents an insightful study of the multiform ways in which art and politics intersected in the suffrage campaign, both harmoniously and problematically, giving a holistic and rounded impression of the intricate landscape that suffrage artists had to navigate. Furthermore, after celebrating the centenary of the Representation of the People Act last year, it once again places art and artists at the centre of a reinvigorated scholarship on British women and politics in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. * Twentieth Century British History *A fascinating collection of engaging and informative essays that extend our knowledge about the centrality of the arts to the women's suffrage movement. * June Purvis, Emerita Professor of Women's and Gender History at the University of Portsmouth, UK *This collection transforms our understanding of artistic contributions to the women’s suffrage campaign by detailing the experiences of artists, consumers, campaigners and propagandists. A genuinely pioneering work, it illuminates how women balanced their professional lives as artists with their feminist activism, as well as bringing to life the variety of visual culture designed and made during this period across Britain and Ireland. This innovative and timely collection should find a wide and appreciative audience. * Senia Paseta, Professor of Modern History at St Hugh's College, University of Oxford, UK *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgements Foreword by Jane Beckett and Deborah Cherry Introduction by Miranda Garrett and Zoë Thomas Part One: Institutional politics Chapter One: Zoë Thomas, ‘I loathe the thought of suffrage sex wars being brought into it’: Institutional conservatism in early twentieth-century women's art organizations Chapter Two: Liz Arthur, The artistic, social and suffrage networks of Glasgow School of Art's women artists and designers Chapter Three: Tara Morton, ‘An Arts and Crafts society, working for the enfranchisement of women’: Unpicking the political threads of the Suffrage Atelier, 1909–1914 Part Two: Enterprise and Marketing Chapter Four: Miranda Garrett, Window smashing and window draping: Suffrage and interior design Chapter Five: Elizabeth Crawford, ‘Our readers are careful buyers’: Creating goods for the suffrage market Chapter Six: Kenneth Florey, English suffrage badges and the marketing of the campaign Part Three: Paintings on display Chapter Seven: Rosie Broadley, Painting suffragettes: Portraits and the militant movement Chapter Eight: Krista Cowman, Suffrage attacks on art, 1913–1914 Part Four: Representing suffrage Chapter Nine: Joseph McBrinn, The spectacle of masculinity: Men and the visual culture of the suffrage campaign Chapter Ten: Janice Helland, An Irish harp and sleeping beauty: The politics of suffrage in the textile art of Una Taylor and Ann Macbeth Chapter Eleven: Chloe Ward, Images of empathy: Representations of force feeding in Votes for Women

Metropolitan Museum of Art How to Read European Decorative Arts
Book SynopsisIlluminating three centuries of European artistry and ingenuity, this volume in The Met’s acclaimed How to Read series provides a wide-ranging exploration of decorative arts from British writing tables to Russian snuffboxes Spanning three centuries of creativity, from the High Renaissance to the Industrial Revolution, this volume in The Met’s How to Read series provides a peek into daily lives across Europe—from England, Spain, and France to Germany, Denmark, and Russia. Featuring 40 exemplary objects, including furniture, tableware, utilitarian items, articles of personal adornment, devotional objects, and display pieces, this publication covers many aspects of European society and lifestyles, from the modest to the fabulously wealthy. The book considers the contributions of renowned masters, such as the Dutch cabinetmaker Jan van Mekeren and the Italian goldsmith Andrea Boucheron, as well as talented amateurs, among them the anonymous young Englishwoman who embroidered an enchanting chest with scenes from the Story of Esther. The works selected include both masterpieces and less familiar examples, some of them previously unpublished, and are discussed not only in light of their art-historical importance but also with regard to the social issues relevant to each, such as the impact of colonial slavery or the changing status of women artists. Amber Books Ltd Abandoned Castles
Book SynopsisAn ancient hilltop fortress. A crusader citadel in the West Bank. A fairytale medieval castle fallen into ruin. From ancient times to the end of the nineteenth century, Abandoned Castles explores more than 100 forts, castles and defensive strongholds from all around the globe. From medieval Japanese castles to Spanish colonial forts in West Africa to Norman stone keeps, the book ranges widely across history. Many have long ceased to serve a purpose, but then, like the crusader castle Krak de Chevaliers in Syria today, their impenetrable walls become the site of more fighting centuries later. Others, such as the Cathar Château de Queribus in southern France, stand high above peaceful coastlines, testament to the wars of the past. Some are beautiful, others brutal, but each tells a story about the way we fought and defended ourselves, and how the building has survived and aged, long after the people it was built by are gone. With 150 outstanding colour photographs, Abandoned Castles is a brilliant pictorial examination of castles, forts, keeps, and defensive fortifications from the ancient world to the end of the nineteenth century.Table of ContentsIntroduction ANCIENT TIMES TO DARK AGES Eleutherae, Attica, Greece Danebury, Hampshire, England Masada, Judea, Israel Euryalus, near Syracuse, Sicily, Italy Coria, Northumberland, England Qal’at al-Bahrain, Bahrain Palace of Darius, Persepolis, Ira Circular Tower, Coastal Fortress, Qal’at al-Bahrain, Bahrain Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, India Theodosian Walls, Istanbul, Turkey Qasr al-Hayr al-Sharqi, Homs Governorate, Syria EARLY MEDIEVAL PERIOD Coity Castle, Glamorgan, Wales Yamchun, Wakhan Valley, Tajikistan Riba de Santiuste, Guadalajara, Spain Helmsley Castle, North Yorkshire, England Château de Saint-Ulrich, Haut-Rhin, France Crac des Chevaliers, Homs Governorate, Syria Beaufort Castle, Nabatieh Governorate, Lebanon Araburg Castle, Lower Austria, Austria Rocco Calascio, Abruzzo, Italy Govone, Savona, Liguria, Italy Loarre Castle, Huesca, Aragon, Spain Dunamase Castle, County Laois, Leinster, Ireland Drachenfels, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany Clock Tower, Gjirokastër Fortress, Gjirokastër, Albania Beaufort Castle, Luxembourg Corfe Castle, Dorset, England Pendragon Castle, Cumbria, England Bait Jibrin, Southern District, Israel Château de Brésis, Gard, France Belvoir Fortress, Northern District, Israel Malbork Castle, Poland Château Gaillard, Eure, Normandy, France LATE MEDIEVAL PERIOD Château de Montgilbert, near Vichy, Allier, France Tintagel, Cornwall, England Caerlaverock Castle, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland Château d’Alleuze, Cantal, Auvergne, France Teczyn, Kraków-Czestochowa Upland, Poland Château de l’Ortenbourg, Alsace, France Beaupre, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales Ogrodzieniec, Krakow-Czestochowa Upland, Poland Rabi Castle, Bohemia, Czech Republic Dunnottar Castle, Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, Scotland Château de Montségur, Ariège, Occitanie, France Carew Castle, Pembrokeshire, Wales Hammerhus, Bornholm, Denmark Altenstein, Bavaria, Germany Auchindoun Castle, Moray, Scotland Old Wardour Castle, Wiltshire, England Nakijin Castle, Okinawa, Japan Château de Quéribus, Aude, France Frangocastello, Chania Prefecture, Crete, Greece Tamagusuku, Okinawa, Japan Olsztyn, Silesia, Poland Dolwyddelan Castle, Conwy County Borough, Wales Leamaneh Castle, County Clare, Ireland Castle Stalker, Loch Linnhe, Argyll, Scotland Dobele Castle, Semigallia, Latvia Okor Castle, Bohemia, Czech Republic Hrusov Castle, Slovakia Fortress of Asklipio, Rhodes, Greece Hovenweep Castle, Utah, USA Takeda Castle, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan Kilchurn Castle, Loch Awe, Argyll and Bute, Scotland Nakagusuku, Okinawa, Japan Zakimi Castle, Okinawa, Japan EARLY MODERN ERA Citadelle de Palais, Belle-Île-en-Mer, Brittany, France Ballycarbery Castle, County Kerry, Ireland Bourtzi, Methoni Castle, Messenia, Peloponnese, Greece Palmanova, Udine, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy Janjira, Maharashtra, India Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan, India Fakhr al-Din al-Maani citadel, Palmyra, Homs Province, Syria Carbury Castle, County Kildare, Ireland Mortella Tower, Corsica, France Dunluce Castle, County Antrim, Northern Ireland Golconda, near Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India Dunluce Castle, County Antrim, Northern Ireland Ardvreck Castle, Loch Assynt, Sutherland, Scotland Fort San Lorenzo, Colón, Panama Fort Mahon, Ambleteuse, Pas-de-Calais, France Krzyztopor Castle, Swietokrzyskie Province, Poland Fort Paté, Blaye, Gironde, Aquitane, France Bitchu Matsuyama Castle, Takahashi, Okayama Prefecture, Japan Minard Castle, Dingle Bay, County Kerry, Ireland Twizell Castle, Northumberland, England IMPERIAL ERA Mow Cop Castle, Mow Cop, Odd Rode, Cheshire, England Cape Coast Castle, Ghana Ussher Fort, Accra, Ghana Fort James, Accra, Ghana Palamidi, Nafplio, Peloponnese, Greece Kincasslagh, County Donegal, Ireland Martello Tower, Bawdsey, Suffolk, England Carleton Martello Tower, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada Fort Alexander, St. Petersburg, Russia Fort Union, Mora Valley, New Mexico, USA Buchanan Castle, Stirlingshire, Scotland Château de Noisy, Celles, Namur, Belgium Fort Gilkicker, Gosport, Hampshire, England Fort Zverev, Kronstadt, near St Petersburg, Russia Hajmasker Barracks, Hajmasker, Hungary Bannerman Castle, Pollepel Island, Hudson River, New York State, USA Fort de Malamot, Mont Malamot, Savoy, France Fort Richmond, New York City, USA Gun Turrets, Askold Island, Fokino, Russia

Amber Books Ltd Abandoned Civilisations: The Mysteries Behind
Book SynopsisRuined cities overgrown by jungle. Towns buried beneath the ground. Statues lying half- hidden in the sand. Why do civilisations collapse? Why are towns abandoned? And how do once mighty cities come to be forgotten about? From the pyramids of Egypt to the ruins at Angkor in Cambodia and on to the mysteries of the Easter Island moai statues, Abandoned Civilisations is a brilliant pictorial work examining lost worlds. What emerges is a picture of how vast societies can rise, thrive and then collapse. We admire how whole cities develop, but equally fascinating is what happens when their moment has passed. From the 9th century temples at Khajuraho in India which were lost in the date palm trees until stumbled across by European engineers in the 19th century to Mayan pyramids in the Guatemalan jungle to Roman cities semi-buried – but consequently preserved – in the North African desert, the book explores why societies fall and what, once abandoned, they leave behind to history. With 150 striking colour photographs exploring 100 worlds, Abandoned Civilisations is a fascinating visual history of the mysteries of lost societies.Table of ContentsIntroduction Africa The Great Sphinx of Giza – The oldest known monumental sculpture, but we’re not sure who made, when exactly or why. Abu Simbel, Egypt Luxor Temple, Egypt Carthage, Tunisia Cave paintings, Tassili, Algeria Timgad, Algeria – The Roman city of Timgad was abandoned more than once. When the Byzantines arrived in the city in the 6th century, they found it empty. It was later gradually consumed – but preserved – by the sands of the Sahara. Naqa or Naga, Sudan – including Lion Temple of Apedemak and Temple of Amun Nubian Pyramids, Meroe, Sudan Laas Geel Cave Art, Hargeisa, Somaliland – Laas Geel’s rock art is estimated to date to somewhere between 9,000 and 3,000 years BC. Naqsh-e Rustam, Iran – 12km from Persepolis Chogha Zanbil, an Elamite ziggurat in Iran abandoned in 640BC Borobudur, Java – A ninth century temple with 504 Buddhas, the compound was abandoned in the 14th century with the conversion of Java to Islam. Lost in the jungle, it was rediscovered in the 19th century. Khajuraho, India – Temples from the 9th century AD that were lost in the date palm jungle until a British engineer in the 19th century was led to them. Now a new town has built up around them. Sat Mahal Ziggurat, Sri Lanka Ajanta Caves, India – Hindu and Jain temples as old as the 2nd century BC lost in the jungle until they were stumbled across in the 19th century. Merv, Turkmenistan Erk Kala (or Kyz-Kala) – the citadel in the city of Merv, Turkmenistan Van Fortress, Urartu, Armenia – 9th century BCE Terracotta Army, China – A collection of 8,000 sculptures of the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. It is a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 210–209BC, the purpose of which was to protect the emperor in his afterlife. It was found by chance by farmers in 1974. Stone City Kashgar, China Mogao Caves, China – Beginning in the 4th century AD, these caves in northwest China were on the Silk Road trade route west. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The New Politics of the Handmade: Craft, Art and Design
Contemporary craft, art and design are inseparable from the flows of production and consumption under global capitalism. The New Politics of the Handmade features twenty-three voices who critically rethink the handmade in this dramatically shifting economy. The authors examine craft within the conditions of extreme material and economic disparity; a renewed focus on labour and materiality in contemporary art and museums; the political dimensions of craftivism, neoliberalism, and state power; efforts toward urban renewal and sustainability; the use of digital technologies; and craft’s connections to race, cultural identity and sovereignty in texts that criss-cross five continents. They claim contemporary craft as a dynamic critical position for understanding the most immediate political and aesthetic issues of our time.

Amber Books Ltd Abandoned Towns
Book SynopsisWith striking color photographs exploring 100 areas, Abandoned Towns is a fascinating visual history of the mysteries of lost worlds. Gold rush towns abandoned when new boomtowns emerge elsewhere or the gold has run out, towns deserted when caught in war zones, settlements evacuated due to natural disasters or chemical spills—seeing a town devoid of people is an uncanny feeling. Where has everyone gone? And why aren’t they coming back? From Pripyat in Ukraine to Bodie in California to English villages requisitioned by the Ministry of Defence during World War II, from Greek leper colonies to deserted Italian mountain villages, Abandoned Towns is a brilliant pictorial work examining lost worlds. With reasons ranging from the collapse of local industry to being pushed aside to make way for a new industry, from earthquakes and volcanoes to man-made chemical spills, from war zones to demilitarized zones, the book explores a wide range of desolate urban environments from around the globe. And with these places left to nature, we can not only see how nature reclaims the land, but also gain a glimpse into the past free from humankind’s modernizing hands.

Azimuth Editions Iranian Copper, Brass and Bronze: Of the late
Book SynopsisIn Western Europe the Golden Age of Islamic metalwork in Iran was (and is) generally considered to be the earlier period, and later metalwork was collected almost by accident and has been correspondingly little studied and poorly published, though in recent decades the imbalance has been somewhat modified. The Hermitage Collection, which numbers 162 pieces is the largest collection in the world of later Iranian Islamic metalwork, from the West of Iran as far as the Punjab. The great majority of these are household utensils, and their manufacture is characteristic of the middling levels of urban societies, though in Khurasan in the late-15th and early 16th centuries brasses or bronzes inlaid with gold and silver were made for its Timurid rulers. The substantial numbers of Iranian copper-alloy astronomical instruments of this period were made by different craftsmen, for a different public, and deserve separate treatment, though not magic bowls, used in folk-medicine and divination, which are noticed in this volume. In his Introduction, Anatolii Ivanov gives a valuable directoryof museums and other institutions of the former Soviet Union with significant collections, which complement the holdings of the Hermitage and together amount to a truly substantial corpus. The latter were acquired from private collections, but the core of the collection, from the museum attached to the school of industrial drawing founded by Baron Stieglitz, came to the Hermitage in the 1920s, when this was broken up. As well as minutely detailed descriptions of each piece and analyses of their decoration, Ivanov presents a detailed critical survey of the limited documentary evidence afforded by the inscriptions many pieces bear, which is of permanent value as a basis for further scholars working on later Islamic metalwork in general.

Prestel Ateliers of Europe: An Atlas of Decorative Arts
Book SynopsisThis visually stunning love letter to the art of craft takes readers inside Europe’s most illustrious—and in many cases endangered—decorative arts workshops to profile how artisans continue to maintain the highest centuries-old standards of workmanship and creativity. Beginning in the Renaissance, ateliers were established as places for European artists to work and teach their crafts. Centuries later most of these spaces have disappeared, but a select few continue to produce some of the world’s most celebrated and sought-after objects in the areas of crystal, ceramics, wrought iron, fabric, bookbinding, mosaic, wood paneling, and more. John Whelan and Oskar Proctor traveled throughout Europe to document these important spaces, both to celebrate them and to preserve their disappearing ideals. Ranging from the well- known to the obscure, this volume takes readers inside dozens of ateliers from Austria, England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland. Sumptuous double-page spreads feature alluring photography, and fascinating background texts tell their stories. By shining a light on their collective value as well as their individual expertise, this book offers both a historic evaluation of how ateliers have been shaped by modern forces—and also a clarion call for their preservation.

Book SynopsisPublished annually from 1906 until 1980, Decorative Art, The Studio Yearbook was dedicated to the latest currents in architecture, interiors, furniture, lighting, glassware, textiles, metalware, and ceramics. Since the publications went out of print, the now hard-to-find yearbooks have become highly prized by collectors and dealers. TASCHEN’s Decorative Art 50s explores the spirit of optimism and the fervent consumerism of the decade. Technology and construction had been enervated by research during the war and these discoveries could now be applied in peacetime. The popularization of plastics, fiberglass, and latex literally shaped the decade. Rising incomes and postwar rebuilding on both sides of the Atlantic led to a massive housing boom in both the suburbs and inner cities, and these new homes reflected the new style. While European design was extraordinarily inventive, American design was looking to an idealized vision of the future—between them a modern idiom was developed that can be seen vividly on these pages. This overview of the decade includes the work of such famous innovators as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Hans Wegner, and Gio Ponti.Trade Review“An indispensable tool for collectors: names are named, designs praised and accusations made.” * San Francisco Examiner Magazine *

Since the publications went out of print, the now hard-to-find yearbooks have become highly prized by collectors and dealers.Decorative Art 1960s looks at the birth of pop in a decade of unprecedented social, sexual, and political change. All the restless energies bubbling throughout the world during the 1960s made their way into the design style of the decade. Liberation was in the air, men were rushing to the moon, and the sky was the limit as far as visual creativity was concerned. The concept of lifestyle really came into its own, and although the early years of the decade still saw a rivalry between the well-crafted object and the industrially manufactured, by its end both ethnic and pop iconography had gained equal foothold in the aesthetic. Light was also predominant in shaping interiors. Freedom of choice and personal expression were the buzzwords for the young consumer, and so the likes of Panton, Sottsass, Paolozzi, Parisi, Sarpaneva, and Lomazzi did what they could to oblige.Trade Review“An indispensable tool for collectors: names are named, designs praised and accusations made.” * San Francisco Examiner Magazine *

Vitra Design Museum Baranger Motion Displays: 55 Moving Scenes of
Book SynopsisThis new publication is dedicated to the Baranger Motion Displays of the R. F. Collection housed at the Vitra Design Museum. Motion Displays were conceived as eye-catching and novel moving objects, which – primarily in the US – were used in jewellers’ shop-window displays to attract customers. The Baranger Motion Displays were produced by Baranger Studios in Pasadena, CA between 1937 and 1957 and were lent to thousands of jewellers’ shops over the years. Primarily during the 1990s, Rolf Fehlbaum, Vitra Chairman Emeritus and founder of the Vitra Design Museum, worked to assemble a carefully selected a comprehensive collection of these objects in Weil am Rhein. With large-scale illustrations of the different Motion Displays and an atmospheric photo essay featuring black-and-white details of the objects, the book provides an unprecedented and in-depth view into this collection. In an accompanying essay, Bill Shaffer traces the success story of the displays and sheds light on the significance of the red cases in which they were delivered to the jewellers. Along with Robots 1:1 and Space Fantasies 1:1, Baranger Motion Displays is the third publication to focus on the R. F. Collection. Visitors can view the collection of Motion Displays at the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein as part of the “Wunderkammer” (cabinet of curiosities), which also presents other parts of Rolf Fehlbaum’s wide-ranging collection. In order for readers to be able to experience the wonders of these moving objects for themselves, each Motion Display has been given a QR Code in the book which links to an entertaining video clip of the display in action.

Stark Studios Limited Baskets: Masterpieces of Japanese Bamboo Art
Book SynopsisThese are exciting times for Japanese bamboo art. May 2017 saw the opening of Japan House Sao Paulo, whose inaugural exhibition 'Bamboo: The Material That Built Japan' drew over 300,000 visitors. From June 2017 to February 2018 the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York mounted another bamboo show that was seen by about 400,000. From 27 November, the Musee du quai Branly in Paris will present the largest-ever exhibition on the subject. This authoritative catalogue of 323 works from the Naej Collection thus appears at a moment when a new global audience has emerged. The Naej Collection is especially strong in works by leading artists from 1850 to 1950, when great craft dynasties were established and first Osaka and then Tokyo emerged as major centres of artistic basketry. The catalogue breaks new ground by combining dramatic photography with precious documentary information drawn from signatures and inscriptions, making it not merely the visual record of a great collection but the essential reference work for a developing field of connoisseurship. Text in English, Japanese and simplified Chinese.Table of ContentsFollowing an essay outlining the evolution of bamboo art in Japan and a small section introducing earlier Chinese baskets and Japanese baskets in Chinese style, the bulk of the catalogue is organized by artistic lineages, starting with the founding father Hayakawa Shokosai I (1815-1897) and his successors and moving on to the other great craft dynasties based in Osaka, including large sections devoted to the Yamamoto Chikuryosai, Tanabe Chikuunsai, and Maeda Chikubosai lines. From catalogue number 192 the focus moves to the Iizuka line in Tochigi Prefecture and Tokyo, with numerous works by Hosai II, Rokansai, and Shokansai. The story is then continued into the post-war period when artistic basketry came to be practised in many other parts of Japan and a new generation of masters emerged, supported by patrons in both Japan and the United States. Each of the fourteen sections of dramatic colour plates (in most cases with both general and detail images) is followed by a section printed on matt paper with photographs of all the signatures and box inscriptions and biographies of each artist. The catalogue concludes with a bibliography, glossary, and artist index.

Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Inspiring Walt Disney: The Animation of French
Book SynopsisAccompanying an exhibition at the Wallace Collection, Inspiring Walt Disney explores the influences of the art and architecture of France on Walt Disney and his studio artists, highlighting in particular the Disney classics of hand-drawn animation, Cinderella (1950) and Beauty and the Beast (1991). Pairing preparatory material from these films – including concept art for talking furniture and fairy-tale castles – with masterpieces from the eighteenth century reveals hidden sources of inspiration and allows us to appreciate the extraordinary talents behind Disney animated films and French decorative arts. Just as the dynamic, twisting movements of the Rococo sought to breathe life into what was essentially inanimate – silver, porcelain, furniture – so too did Disney animators seek to create the illusion of movement, action and emotion. Illustrated with innovative works by artists such as Mary Blair, Hans Bacher and Peter J. Hall, and the animated and anthropomorphic furniture, Sèvres porcelain and gilt bronze of rococo designers, the catalogue explores the shared creative roots of these two seemingly disparate artistic realms and looks to revitalise the feelings of excitement, awe and marvel, which both eighteenth-century craftsmen and Disney animators sought to spark in their audiences.Table of ContentsForeword Inspiring Walt Disney - Helen Jacobsen Selected Works - Helen Jacobsen with Wolf Burchard The Discovery of Europe Early Animation Cinderella Architecture of the Imagination The Swing Eighteenth-Century Dress Animating the Inanimate Further Reading Picture Credits Index
