Book SynopsisThe 23 essays (or love songs) that make up the now classic volume Air Guitar trawl a vast, invisible underground empire of pleasure, through record stores, honky-tonks, art galleries, jazz clubs, cocktail lounges, surf shops and hot-rod stores, as restlessly on the move as the America they depict. Air Guitar pioneered a kind of plain-talking in cultural criticism, willingly subjective and always candid and direct. A valuable reading tool for art lovers, neophytes, students and teachers alike, Hickey''s book--now in its eighth printing--has galvanized a generation of art lovers, with new takes on Norman Rockwell, Robert Mapplethorpe, Stan Brakhage, Andy Warhol and Perry Mason. In June 2009, Newsweek voted Air Guitar one of the top 50 books that open a window on the times we live in, whether they deal directly with the issues of today or simply help us see ourselves in new and surprising ways, and described the book as a seamless blend of criticism, personal h

Book SynopsisJimi Hendrix ''transgressed many boundaries; both arbitrary musical definitions separating blues and soul or jazz and rock, and also those fundamental divides between the archaic and the avant-garde, between individualist and collectivist philosophies, between blacks and whites, between America and Britain, between passive acquiescence and furious resistance, between lust for life and obsession with death.'' Charles Shaar MurrayCrosstown Traffic charts the routes Hendrix took to arrive at his ''unique musical formulation''. The result is a bravura study of his art and life that has become established as the definitive work on ''the most eloquent instrumentalist ever to work in rock.''Winner of the Ralph Gleason Music Book Award on first publication, this brilliant and ambitious book, hailed as ''the most compelling and literate essay on rock since Greil Marcus'' Mystery Train, is being reissued with an updated introduction.Trade ReviewThe artistry of this book matches that of its subject. -- Nick ToschesWe've seen several biographies of Jimi Hendrix but Crosstown Traffic's thrust is considerably more ambitious . . . Murray's exploration of Hendrix's role as a black rocker in a practically all-white pop-music elite is as telling an examination of rock and race, and of tensions and prejudices behind the sixties peace-and-brotherhood facade, as popular music writing has seen. Crosstown Traffic is an important book and, in its range and clarity of thought, an exemplary one. -- Robert PalmerMouthwatering stuff for any serious Jimi Hendrix fan . . . Murray is certainly the first writer to fully portray the ways in which Hendrix shaped the future in which we now live, from hard rock to funk to jazz. Crosstown Traffic also stands as the best layman's history ot the electric guitar I've ever come across. -- Dave MarshMurray goes so far inside the myth that it dissolves. What is left is a man pursuing hiw own destiny, piece by piece, day by day. -- Greil Marcus

  • Life After Death: The Viola da Gamba in Britain

Boydell & Brewer Ltd Life After Death: The Viola da Gamba in Britain

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisNew research throws light on the history of the viol after Purcell, including its revival in the late eighteenth century through Charles Frederick Abel. It is normally thought that the bass viol or viola da gamba dropped out of British musical life in the 1690s, and that Henry Purcell was the last composer to write for it. Peter Holman shows how the gamba changed its role and function in the Restoration period under the influence of foreign music and musicians; how it was played and composed for by the circle of immigrant musicians around Handel; how it was part of the fashion for exotic instruments in themiddle of the century; and how the presence in London of its greatest eighteenth-century exponent, Charles Frederick Abel, sparked off a revival in the 1760s and 70s. Later chapters investigate the gamba's role as an emblem of sensibility among aristocrats, artists and intellectuals, including the Countess of Pembroke, Sir Edward Walpole, Ann Ford, Laurence Sterne, Thomas Gainsborough and Benjamin Franklin, and trace Abel's influence and legacy farinto the nineteenth century. A concluding chapter is concerned with its role in the developing early music movement, culminating with Arnold Dolmetsch's first London concerts with old instruments in 1890. PETER HOLMAN is Professor Emeritus of Historical Musicology at Leeds University, and director of The Parley of Instruments, the choir Psalmody, and the Suffolk Villages Festival.Trade Review[O]utstanding research [...] a valuable reference book that I will no doubt consult again and again. * EIGHTEENTH CENTURY MUSIC *[A] fascinating study that has significantly enlightened the dark ages of a much loved instrument. * MUSIC & LETTERS *[Eine] spannenede und extreme informative Abhandlung. * VIOLA DA GAMBA *This is a book not only for those interested in the viola da gamba but also in musical social history in Britain from the 17th to the end of the 19th century. It is rich in scholarly detail and is entertaining to read. * STRINGENDO *[B]eautifully presented and Holman's lucid and elegant prose is a joy to read. [...] This is a book suitable for players and scholars alike, which makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of the viol; I recommend it wholeheartedly. * EARLY MUSIC *[This] volume draws on a truly vast range of documentation [...] and is written in an unpretentious, descriptive prose [...] the coverage is impressive and its result will be of use in many connections: indeed a reference work. * MUSICAL TIMES *There are so many new insights into the life of the viol in this book [...] that the reader is put on a steep learning curve and sent on a truly fascinating journey through the centuries. [...] it can easily be used as a reference book by delving into the sub-chapters or consulting the very comprehensive index, or be read like an exciting novel. * THE CONSORT *No one better could have written this book, which is superb. [...] Applying to the task his extensive research, close acquaintance with the instruments and their music, stellar command of the literature, and lively narrative, Holman demonstrates the extent to which viol playing in Britain survived. * CHOICE *Holman has the knack of finding interesting information and writing interestingly about it. [...] It is a book to dip into. * EARLY MUSIC REVIEW *

  • Solo Time for Violin Book 3 CD 16 concert pieces

Oxford University Press Solo Time for Violin Book 3 CD 16 concert pieces

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisSolo Time for Violin is a three-volume series of concert pieces for the intermediate to more advanced violinist. Featuring arrangements and original pieces by the authors of the award-winning Fiddle Time series, these graded collections provide sophisticated repertoire from the Baroque to the modern age and introduce styles and techniques for the developing performer.Trade ReviewKathy and David Blackwell need no introduction to string teachers and students; their Fiddle Time series has gained universal appeal ... All 48 pieces are carefully chosen for their educational value as well as musical appeal. Helpful fingering and bowing suggestions together with informative notes, stylish piano accompaniments and a CD with backing tracks as well as full performances provide an admirable follow-up to the Blackwells' considerable achievements. Mary Nemet, Stringendo (AUSTA), October 15 With the introduction of this latest addition to the Fiddle Time family of publications [Solo Time], it would now theoretically be possible to go from complete beginner to ABRSM Grade 8 using only one series of books. That this is the case is a testament to the vast accumulated experience of the Blackwells, which they have so generously shared with their violin teaching colleagues ... Pieces are not arranged in chronological order, which invites a more playful exploration. There are some real gems ... The books owe a certain amount to the Associated Board's selected graded repertoire with their helpful (but not over-editorial) fingering and bowing policies, and notes on context ... these carefully crafted arrangements and editions give pupils access to some interesting and occasionally challenging new repertoire. The Strad, September 2015 I love the new Solo Time books - my students are giving great feedback too. Great pieces to learn in between grades - love 'Sunayama' and its pentatonics. The pieces are pushing my students in a positive way to explore new music and create a thirst to learn new techniques to be able to play these pieces. Thanks for helping us teachers on the front line; these books will definitely be a lovely addition for my students. Sian Phillips, music teacher and performer, June 2015 One piece which especially brought a smile to my face is a fun set of violinistic variations, written by Kathy and David Blackwell, on the theme from the slow movement of Haydn's Surprise Symphony ... The pieces are slightly 'off the beaten track' and the whole presentation is most attractive with again a backing CD provided. You can also go onto the OUP website and listen to complete performances of some half dozen of the pieces. I envisage teachers using these books a lot with their students. Book SynopsisHow fast can you play? What guitar do you have? Who is better, Van Halen or Steve Vai? For metal fans in the 80s, these were common and important questions. Tune in to MTV, pick up a magazine, or walk into an instrument store, and more often than not you d be exposed to what is now known as shredding the fast, virtuoso soloing popularized by musicians like Vai and Van Halen, Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads and Dimebag Darrell. Inspired by these pioneering guitarists, thousands of young musicians would spend hours at home in their bedrooms, perfecting both their playing and their poses. Though shredding fell out of favour during the grunge/alternative rock era, it has become increasingly popular again in recent years, spurred by the rise in popularity of bands like Children Of Bodom, DragonForce, and Trivium. Drawing on more than 70 exclusive interviews with key shredders past and present, author and guitarist Greg Prato has assembled the definitive guide to the fastest players of them all.

Book SynopsisThis volume is an introduction to cello playing by an outstanding recitalist, soloist and teacher of international repute whose natural wish - as a teacher - would be to sing, play and demonstrate what he means. Devoted pupil, Nona Pyron, herself a figure of some authority in the world of the cello, has guided and marshalled William Pleeth's brilliantly perceptive advice - based on his lifetime's playing and teaching - into the confines of this valuable book.Trade Review'Within these pages, William Pleeth deals with the complex relationships between player and instrument, and the ‘architecture’ of the music that provides the structure to guide the musician’s imagination. He also shares insights into letting the cello speak for itself at the composer’s bidding, in a voice appropriate to its musical context. A tutorial chapter is also included, as well as a personal account of the wide repertoire of the cello.
