  • Cranmore Publications Mono Record Collector's Handbook

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Audiophile Record Collector''s Handbook (ARCH) has been in print since 1991. It is aimed mainly at collectors of fine sounding analogue stereo LP records. In this sense it was responding to a worldwide interest in vinyl LPs from the standpoint of their great sound quality. During the latter part of the 1990s the enormous interest in stereo records began to reduce from its almost obsessive levels and people began to take more interest in the mono recordings of the 1950s. I am not ashamed to include myself in this. In a way it has been like returning to one''s musical roots, replacing the concerns of audiophile stereo (image placement, depth, dynamic levels, etc) with the deeper concerns of true music making (artistic sincerity, emotional immediacy, etc). It seems obvious that the same demand that made ARCH so popular also exists for the mono LPs. The basic requirement for any collector is to have full details of what there is to collect. The information in this book represents the labour of many years, not just by the author, but by many others too. I have been a record collector and/or dealer for many years. I first became aware of the great sound quality of some of the early Deccas and RCA shaded dogs during the mid 80s. I then formed a collection including practically every worthwhile RCA shaded dog, Mercury, Decca SXL, EMI ASD, SAX, Lyrita, etc. This collection was acquired by a process of swapping records with many internationally based fellow collectors. Around 1989 I started selling records in my spare time, and in 1993 this became a full time activity. The business was joined by my wife, Jan, in 1994 and has since supplied many thousands of audiophile records to collectors all over the world, being generally regarded as the premier international source of quality English vinyl.

Book SynopsisThis book is aimed mainly at collectors of fine sounding analogue stereo LP records. It concentrates largely on orchestral repertoire - that is what such collectors listen to in the main. I have started from the assumption that the analogue stereo recordings from the period late 50s to mid 70s are far more satisfying than any other recordings ever made. The great majority of good recordings from that period are to be found on the RCA, Mercury, Decca, EMI, and Lyrita labels. The information in this book represents the labour of many years, not just by the author, but by many others too.

Book SynopsisDmitri Shostakovich was one of the great composers of the 20th century, the first major Soviet composer and a figure of some controversy. This third edition is an up-to-date catalogue of the composer;s works.Trade ReviewReviews from the Second Edition Derek Hulme has produced an exuberantly encyclopedic work that expands the concept to include an extensive bibliography and discography and-as if it were not enough-a listing of BBC broadcasts on the composer plus seven appendices...As a diligent amplification and updating of Macdonald's catalogue, the discography and bibliography alone-to say nothing of the appendix of BBC broadcasts-would make it indispensable to any person or organization concerned with the composer. All in all, it is a formidable achievement, which fully deserves Mme. In its comprehensiveness and detail, it far surpasses any previous efforts; the book amply justifies its claim to usefulness by this feature alone. * Notes: Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association *A massive work of scholarship and organisation. * Inverness Courier *Derek Hulme's labour of love has turned into an essential reference work for scholars, publishers, performers, and of course, the ever growing number of concert goers whose love of Shostakovich's music goes beyond the superficial....this compendium deserves to be bought by libraries, both general and specialist. * The Slavonic and East European Review *Reviews from the Second Edition Derek Hulme has produced an exuberantly encyclopedic work that expands the concept to include an extensive bibliography and discography and-as if it were not enough-a listing of BBC broadcasts on the composer plus seven appendices...As a diligent amplification and updating of Macdonald's catalogue, the discography and bibliography alone-to say nothing of the appendix of BBC broadcasts-would make it indispensable to any person or organization concerned with the composer. Rowman & Littlefield Counting Down Southern Rock

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhen Southern rock acts like the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynrd stormed American concert stages, detractors immediately came to the fore declaring the genre to be little more than a marketing gimmick. But those on stage themselves would have called its appearance not only inevitable but also a way of life. In the end, the musicians who played Southern rock reflected a robust and broad variety of influences, drawing deeply from the wellsprings of blues, rock, country, and even jazz. Listeners gravitated to the sounds of the New South, a place that had captured pop culture's imagination amid the turbulence following President Nixon's successful Southern strategy and silent majorities. Southern rock garnered a second wave of enthusiasm with the rise of the urban cowboy and Bill Clinton's ascension to the presidency. For nearly half a century, Southern rock has captured and expressed the energy of the New South, inspiring a legacy that listeners can still hear from jam bands, indie actsTrade ReviewMusic-journalist Banister takes a look at Southern rock, digging into historical information to explain why he thinks these 100 songs are the best representation of the genre. Each song entry contains the original release information and several paragraphs of anecdotes and insight about not only the music, but also pop-culture details and trivia surrounding each song. Featured artists include the Allman Brothers Band, the Black Crowes, the Kentucky Headhunters, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and ZZ Top. Music fans will enjoy this volume (and the others in this series), which should find a home in most circulating collections. * Booklist *Bannister’s work will serve as an excellent gateway to Southern Rock for those unfamiliar with the genre. * American Reference Books Annual *[T]he song write-ups [in Counting Down Southern Rock] are brief ... making for a fast read but also making it convenient to set the book down when you want to take a break, which is a good thing because you'll be inspired to get up and put on your favorite Southern rock album. * antiMusic *I recommend Counting Down Southern Rock for all circulating collections. It also deserves a place on the bookshelf of anybody that finds enjoyment in listening to and learning about southern rock. * s *Table of ContentsThe Countdown: 100. “Another Man Down,” Heartsfield 99. “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way,” Hank Williams, Jr. 98. “Glitter Queen,” Hydra 97. “Stars and Scars,” Point Blank 96. “Mind Bender,” Stillwater 95. “It's Your Secret,” Sea Level 94. “Sang Her Love Songs,” The Winters Brothers Band 93. “Fox Huntin’,” Blackhorse 92. “Life's Railway To Heaven,” Amazing Rhythm Aces 91. “Grits Ain't Groceries,” Wet Willie 90. “Walk Softly,” Kentucky Headhunters 89. “Mail Train Blues,” Grinderswitch 88. “All Over But The Cryin’,” Georgia Satellites 87. “Bougainvillea,” Dickey Betts & Great Southern 86. “In America,” Charlie Daniels Band 85. “Travelin’ Shoes,” Elvin Bishop 84. “Heard It On The X,” ZZ Top 83. “Run Gypsy Run,” Dickey Betts & Great Southern 82. “Champagne Jam,” Atlanta Rhythm Section 81. “Still in Saigon,” Charlie Daniels Band 80. “Georgia Rhythm,” Atlanta Rhythm Section 79. “Twice As Hard,” Black Crowes 78. “Before The Bullets Fly,” Gregg Allman 77. “Knoxville Girl,” The Outlaws 76. “Am I Losin’,” Lynyrd Skynyrd 75. “Wishing Well,” Blackfoot 74. “Fancy Ideas,” Rossington Collins Band 73. “Fall of the Peacemakers,” Molly Hatchet 72. “Uncle Liajh,” Black Oak Arkansas 71. “Please Be With Me,” Cowboy 70. “Jackie Blue,” Ozark Mountain Daredevils 69. “So Into You,” Atlanta Rhythm Section 68. “Higher Ground,” Grinderswitch 67. “Battleship Chains,” Georgia Satellites 66. “All I Can Do Is Write About It,” Lynyrd Skynyrd 65. “Jealous Again,” Black Crowes 64. “Searchin’ For A Rainbow,” Marshall Tucker Band 63. “Bounty Hunter,” Molly Hatchet 62. “Don’t Misunderstand Me,” Rossington Collins Band 61. “Four Walls of Raiford,” Lynyrd Skynyrd 60. “Rockin’ In To The Night,” .38 Special 59. “Hard To Handle,” Black Crowes 58. “Jim Dandy,” Black Oak Arkansas 57. “Country Side of Life,” Wet Willie 56. “Gator Country,” Molly Hatchet 55. “This Ol’ Cowboy,” Marshall Tucker Band 54. “Long Haired Country Boy,” Charlie Daniels Band 53. “Honky-Tonk Night Time Man,” Lynyrd Skynyrd 52. “24 Hours at a Time,” Marshall Tucker Band 51. “Hurry Sundown,” The Outlaws 50. “Trudy,” Charlie Daniels Band 49. “Southbound,” Allman Brothers Band 48. “Cheap Sunglasses,” ZZ Top 47. “Rock Bottom,” Dickey Betts Band 46. “Brickyard Road,” Johnny Van Zant 45. “Seven Turns,” Allman Brothers Band 44. “Fire On The Mountain,” Marshall Tucker Band 43. “Good Clean Fun,” Allman Brothers Band 42. “Dixie Rock,” Wet Willie 41. “Freeborn Man,” The Outlaws 40. “If You Wanna Get To Heaven,” Ozark Mountain Daredevils 39. “Just Got Paid,” ZZ Top 38. “Jukin’,” Atlanta Rhythm Section 37. “Third Rate Romance,” Amazing Rhythm Aces 36. “Dumas Walker,” Kentucky Headhunters 35. “Wild Eyed Southern Boys,” .38 Special 34. “(Ghost) Riders in the Sky,” The Outlaws 33. “Keep Your Hands To Yourself,” Georgia Satellites 32. “Grey Ghost,” Henry Paul Band 31. “I'm No Angel,” Gregg Allman 30. “Flirtin’ With Disaster,” Molly Hatchet 29. “Fooled Around and Fell in Love,” Elvin Bishop 28. “Shout Bamalama,” Wet Willie 27. “Hold On Loosely,” .38 Special 26. “That Smell,” Lynyrd Skynyrd 25. “Ain't Wasting Time No More,” Allman Brothers Band 24. “Heard It In A Love Song,” Marshall Tucker Band 23. “Midnight Rider,” Allman Brothers Band 22. “Tuesday’s Gone,” Lynyrd Skynyrd 21. “Melissa,” Allman Brothers Band 20. “Highway Song,” Blackfoot 19. “There Goes Another Love Song,” The Outlaws 18. “Homesick,” Atlanta Rhythm Section 17. “Gimme Three Steps,” Lynyrd Skynyrd 16. “Blue Sky,” Allman Brothers Band 15. “LaGrange,” ZZ Top 14. “Statesboro Blues,” Allman Brothers Band 13. “Simple Man,” Lynyrd Skynyrd 12. “Devil Went Down To Georgia,” Charlie Daniels Band 11. “Dreams,” Allman Brothers Band/Molly Hatchet 10. “South’s Gonna Do It Again,” Charlie Daniels Band 9. “Train Train,” Blackfoot 8. “Take the Highway,” Marshall Tucker Band 7. “Keep On Smilin’,” Wet Willie 6. “Green Grass and High Tides,” The Outlaws 5. “Sweet Home Alabama,” Lynyrd Skynyrd 4. “Whipping Post,” Allman Brothers Band 3. “Can’t You See,” Marshall Tucker Band 2. “Ramblin' Man’,” Allman Brothers Band 1. “Free Bird,” Lynyrd Skynyrd … And 100 More

Book SynopsisSoul is the most powerful expression of American music -- a distinct combination of roots, migration, race, culture, and politics packaged together for your dancing pleasure. But if you thought the sounds of Motown or Stax Records died along with 8-tracks and macrame, you d be wrong. For two decades, Daptone Records has churned out hard funk and such beautiful soul that these records sparked a musical revolution. Run by a collective of soul-obsessed producers and musicians, the Brooklyn-based independent label launched the careers of artists such as Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley, and Bruno Mars. Their records paid homage but never lip service to the original artists, proving that soul is still culturally relevant and just as exciting. It Ain t Retro charts this revival s players, sounds, and tectonic shifts over the past twenty years, taking you from dingy clubs where soul crazed DJs packed the dancefloor, to just uptown where some of the genre s heaviest musicians jumpstarted the renaissance in a basement studio, and all the way to the White House. This definitive tale of Daptone Records soulful revolution chronicles the label s history, players, and sounds while dissecting the scene s cultural underpinnings, which continue to reverberate in pop music.

  • Vinyl Freak

    Duke University Press Vinyl Freak

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMusic writer, curator, and collector John Corbett burrows deep inside the record collector's mind, documenting and reflecting on his decades-long love affair with vinyl. Discussing more than 200 rare and out-of-print LPs, Corbett combines memoir and criticism to explain what makes vinyl special and what drives collectors everywhere.Trade Review"Vinyl Freak could have easily been a stale trip down memory lane by a record collector. Yet Corbett takes an almost philosophical look at how music passes through listening mediums and what that means for listeners. As a result, the text will appeal to both vinyl freaks and non-freaks as it speaks to the transience of pop culture and its intersection with everyday lives." -- Amanda McCorquodale * Foreword Reviews *"... since the discussion is at least as much about the music being collected as the vinyl package, there is also a lot of intriguing music in the book. Much (but not all) of it jazz, and all of it worth seeking out: it comes with Corbett's highest recommendation." -- Mark Sullivan * All About Jazz *"[A] fascinating look at a subculture og hard-core collectors and a gold mine of information about various kinds of music and recording esoterica.... The illustrations of the record covers under review are fascinating and the author's musical savvy is daunting. This lively book could appeal to a wide range of readers." -- David Keymer * Library Journal *"... one of the most readable books about the arcane magic of hunting down and listening to rare and unusual albums, or even rediscovering them from your own collection." -- Jon Newey * Jazzwise *"As a person who is not quite an over-the-top Sun Ra aficionado but is certainly more than a casual fan, I am forever grateful for Corbett’s obsession. As a person who is always interested in discovering new and obscure music, I am also forever grateful for Corbett and his publisher compiling this collection of reviews. Although I read several of them in their original incarnation in Downbeat, this little book is now my reference guide for music I need to check out. Thanks again, John Corbett." -- Ron Jacobs * Counterpunch *"[Corbett's] new book digs deep into the culture of the vinyl lover and digs even deeper into his personal record collection. In the process, he exposes a beautiful and dusty world largely forgotten but kept alive by that dead medium known as the vinyl record." -- Christopher Laird * PopMatters *"Corbett really is an 'equal opportunity ear filler' and is willing to acquire the music he really enjoys in any format. With Vinyl Freak John Corbett invites us to join him in the pleasure of discovering new sounds to indulge our ears. So what are you waiting for? You’ve been invited. Highly Recommended!" -- Chris De Chiara * Avant Music News *"Corbett still has an obscene record collection, but he's realized that his greatest mission is to share and educate—to arrange things so that others can experience the joy that he does. As much as anything I've read by him, Vinyl Freak does precisely that." -- Peter Margasak * Chicago Reader *"John Corbett is one of my favourite music writers. This book gathers up his elegaic and highly informative columns for Vinyl Freak magazine along with a series of mediations or essays on his love of music, an engaging mix of autobiography, reflection and storytelling. There are lots of colour pictures of record sleeves too." -- Rupert Loydell * International Times *"Corbett's deep knowledge in his chosen fields yields many valuable insights about records you may never have even heard of, let alone heard. Sure, he appreciates the classics, but he favours outliers. Admirably, he wants to broaden the canon (it would behoove readers to keep a notebook handy to tabulate all the records for which they should search).... And that is the motor of Vinyl Freak: an insatiable desire for the next revelatory recording, offering a thrilling portal to discover a hidden facet of your identity through a work of art. And if it impresses your mates or seduces a potential lover, so much the better." -- Dave Segal * The Wire *"John Corbett revels in the knowledge he's gained from a life spent rooting round shops and chats with like-minded souls. It's the final section that will resonate with most, detailing his experience unearthing an entire house-worth of Sun Ra memorabilia, it is so vividly written that you can almost sense his pulse racing as he ecstatically rifles through priceless artefacts." * Record Collector *"Corbett writes with both enthusiasm and a keen ear, the upshot of which is that high-dollar rarities and cheapies that shred get near-equal attention." -- Clifford Allen * New York City Jazz Record *"John Corbett shows how vinyl collecting serves archival and perhaps even societal purposes. By actively reanimating obscure and hard to find vinyl, he demonstrates that 'vinyl freaks' make worlds available that otherwise might be lost. Vinyl Freak opens up a world of vinyl, revealing recordings, musicians, as well as cultural history, that remain written in the grooves of decades-old records." -- Janet Borgerson & Jonathan Schroeder * Popular Music and Society *“Vinyl Freak is a good read, a well-written collection that helps with the fun and overwhelming project of trying to come to grips with the huge amount of music preserved in the LP era. I cannot imagine even casual collectors making it through Vinyl Freak without adding several items to their wants lists.” -- Carlos Peña * ARSC Journal *"The spirit of this book, it’s generosity and enthusiasm all work to support John’s preferred status as a 'Freak' not a 'Snob.' I love records. I love books. A beautiful book about crazy rare and out-of-print records?! Heaven." -- Jeff Tweedy * Amazon Book Review *Table of ContentsTrack One / Formation of a Freak 1 Track Two / "News of My Death, Greatly Exaggerated," Quoth the Record 5 Column One / 2000–2003 Philly Joe Jones, Philly Joe Jones 15 Paul Gonsalves, Cookin' 16 Takashi Furuya with the Freshmen, Fanky Drivin' 18 Carsten Meinert Kvartet, To You 20 Melvin Jackson, Funky Skull 21 Gloria Coleman Quartet featuring Pola Roberts, Soul Sisters 23 Elmo Hope Ensemble, Sounds from Rikers Island 24 Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath, Brotherhood 26Morris Grants Presents J.U.N.K. 28 Tom Stewart, Sexette / Quintette 30 Kenny Graham and His Satellites, Moondog and Suncat Suites 31 John Coltrane, Cosmic Music 33 André Hodeir, Jazz et Jazz: Jazz Experiments; Triple Play Stereo, Pop+Jazz=Swing; Bill Russo Orchestra, Stereophony 35 George Davis Sextet, various acetates 37 Staffan Harde, Staffan Harde 39 Art Pepper, Chile Pepper 42 Jack Wilson, The Jazz Organs 43 Craig Harris, Tributes 45 Quintet Moderne, The Strange and the Commonplace 46 A.
