  • Inner Journeying Through Art-Journaling: Learning

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Inner Journeying Through Art-Journaling: Learning

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisInner Journeying Through Art-Journaling introduces a holistic journaling process that combines art, art therapy, design theory and spiritual direction in order to attain personal balance, awareness of one's own inner processes, resolution of internal conflicts and enhanced wellness. The book guides the reader through the process of creative journaling and presents the key elements of the technique. Case studies and art journals of Marianne Hieb's own clients and retreat participants show the effectiveness of journaling as a therapeutic intervention and as a meditative tool.Inner Journeying Through Art-Journaling will be of significant use to anyone interested in holistic healing, and of special interest to arts therapists, counsellors, spiritual directors, and anyone dealing with people who are encountering loss, grief, resistance, or discernment issues. It will also be helpful for the individual looking to add holistic journaling to his or her own meditation, prayer, or inner exploration practice.Trade ReviewRefreshingly, this book finds a middle path that can be both therapeutically useful and also allows the reader to travel at a pace that feels safe for them...the ideas and method are very grounded and both counsellors and clients will find much that is useful in this offering. -- Life WorksInner-Journeying Through Art Journaling will be of particular interest to those looking to embark upon their own holistic journey. and of relevance to art therapists, counsellors and sprititual directors alike. -- Inside OutThis book gently guides the non-practising artist through some of the techniques and theory of art but always with reassuring and non-judgemental words. But this is not an art book, "art-journaling is," the author says, "the use of simple art materials, the language of design, gazing, written journaling, noticing, to help focus, express, respond to, uncover or clarify inner wisdom." The emphasis is on the spiritual practice and inner journey of art-journaling rather than on the product. The book is illustrated with words and pictures drawn from the author's own experience and the experience of those she has guided in this practice. After reading the book I went out and bought some oil pastels and (yet another) blank notebook. I look forward to finding the courage to using them in some of the ways Marianne Hieb suggests. -- Lapidus QuarterlyHaving discovered the value of art journaling in my own life, I was intrigued by the title of Marianne Hieb's latest work: Inner Journeying Through Art Journaling…as I delved into it, I found that it was rich and poetic, filled with inspiring exercises and examples - a book to savour and linger over, and certainly not one to devour in a single sitting.I would recommend this book to anyone who wants t learn more about art-journaling, whether a beginner or a seasoned journaler. -- The Art Therapist (BCATA)This book gives practical instruction in recording your feelings from day to day in a visual diary with words as a supplement and aide-memoir. This process is regarded as a spiritual practice, almost a form of prayer, and is geared to people "who are encountering loss, grief, resistance, or discernment issues" as a therapeutic tool. Marianne Hieb also deals with the difficulty of avoiding intellectual constraints to spontaneous creativity. She does give a welcome intellectual framework in terms of design theory, and her definition of marks, line, shape, texture, form and colour use a simple language and are beautifully clear. The chapter on "The Principles of Design and the Creative Process" contains sections on balance, movement, rhythm, contrast, emphasis, pattern and unity as an introduction to forgetting and remembering, compassion, befriending the creative process and faceted prayer, which she calls "a blank openness into which you invite the voice of the Holy". -- Poetry ExpressArt-journaling is a way of prayer, and it is a tool for spiritual direction. I recommend Inner Journeying Through Art-Journaling for personal use as well as for use in spiritual direction. Hieb believes "our innate creativity is at the heart of spirituality," and she offers this book "as a place to listen for the authentic voice" (p. 15). -- Presence: An International Journal of Spiritual DirectionTable of ContentsAcknowledgments. • Healing through Trigger Point Therapy: A Guide to

North Atlantic Books,U.S. Healing through Trigger Point Therapy: A Guide to

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is about empowerment for chronic pain patients and care providers alike. Every chronic pain condition has a treatable myofascial trigger point component, including fibromyalgia. Many of the localized symptoms now considered as fibromyalgia are actually due to trigger points. The central sensitization of fibromyalgia amplifies symptoms that trigger points cause, and this book teaches care providers and patients how to identify and treat those causes.   Chronic myofascial pain due to trigger points can be body-wide, and can cause or maintain fibromyalgia central sensitization. Trigger points can cause and/or maintain or contribute to many types of pain and dysfunction, including numbness and tingling, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, osteoarthritis, cognitive dysfunctions and disorientation, impotence, incontinence, loss of voice, pelvic pain, muscle weakness, menstrual pain, TMJ dysfunction, shortness of breath, and many symptoms attributed to old age or "atypical" or psychological sources.   Trigger point therapy has been around for decades, but only recently have trigger points been imaged at the Mayo Clinic and National Institutes of Health. Their ubiquity and importance is only now being recognized.   Devin Starlanyl is a medically trained chronic myofascial pain and fibromyalgia researcher and educator, as well as a patient with both of these conditions. She has provided chronic pain education and support to thousands of patients and care providers around the world for decades. John Sharkey is a physiologist with more than twenty-seven years of anatomy experience, and the director of a myofascial pain facility. Together they have written a comprehensive reference to trigger point treatment to help patients with fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, and many other conditions.   This guide will be useful for all types of doctors, nurses, therapists, bodyworkers, and lay people, facilitating communication between care providers and patients and empowering patients who now struggle with all kinds of misunderstood and unexplained symptoms.   Part 1 explains what trigger points are and how they generate symptoms, refer pain and other symptoms to other parts of the body, and create a downward spiral of dysfunction. The authors look at the interconnection between fibromyalgia and myofascial trigger points and their possible causes and symptoms; identify stressors that perpetuate trigger points such as poor posture, poor breathing habits, nutritional inadequacies, lack of sleep, and environmental and psychological factors; and provide a list of over one hundred pain symptoms and their most common corresponding trigger point sources.   Part 2 describes the sites of trigger points and their referral patterns within each region of the body, and provides pain relief solutions for fibromyalgia and trigger point patients and others with debilitating symptoms. Pain treatment plans include both self-help remedies for the patient—stretching or postural exercises, self-massage techniques and prevention strategies—as well as diagnostic and treatment hints for care providers.   Part 3 offers guidance for both patients and care providers in history taking, examination, and palpation skills, as well as treatment options. It offers a vision for the future that includes early assessment, adequate medical training, prevention of fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis, changes to chronic pain management and possible solutions to the health care crisis, and a healthier version of our middle age and golden years, asserting that patients have a vital role to play in the management of their own health.

Greenleaf Book Group LLC Struck By Living: From Depression to Hope

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is a story of hope. My book about my personal experience with clinical depression reads like a fast-paced novel, with characters that charm and frustrate. The content is tough, but the story difficult to abandon. My book also relates my search for identity. After leaving the business world to care for small children and aging grandparents, as well as adapting to a culture far different from that of my upbringing, I evaporated into my surroundings, no longer sure of who I was. What was my purpose? What did I want? These questions cratered me, setting in motion my genetic tendency for depression. Most people answer these questions without a tour of the psychiatric ward, but my road was bumpy -- the psychiatric ward was only one of many stops. Each time I speak about my experience, I find people are often one step removed from the devastation of mental illness or even suicide. Stories about mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, spouses, and children all make me wonder: Could we have stopped those deaths? If we are more aware, can we see the signs earlier and save a life? I think we can. In that belief, I offer my story. Proceeds from this book will be donated to programs and research to battle mental illness.

  • Snapshots: A Story of Love, Loss & Life

Granville Island Publishing Snapshots: A Story of Love, Loss & Life

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWith the help of snapshots, moments frozen in time, Cathy Sosnowsky relives her dark passage through a mother''s worst nightmares: a painful illegal abortion followed by the loss of her daughter, Suzannah, who died shortly after birth; the accidental death of her beloved "gift child", Alex, at age 17; and the loss of her two adopted children, Michael and Tanya, each of whom, at age 14, turned to drugs, prostitution, and a life on the streets. Somehow, through her heartbreak, Cathy found a way to hold on, and, in some ways, to prevail. Her devastation at losing Alex gave rise to the published poet and to the healer who has helped countless bereaved parents all over the world. And through the crucible of suffering came unexpected rebirths -- being a grandmother to Ainsley, the baby she tried to talk Tanya out of having; her son Michael''s transformation from criminal to successful international ESL teacher; and her marriage to Woldy, strengthened through trials that few couples survive. Although triumphant, "Snapshots" is not the story of a perfect human being. A major strength of this memoir is Cathy''s honest account of her failings and challenges -- the times when a gin and tonic was the high point of her day; the times when she shut her adopted children out of her heart; the times when her grief consumed her so completely that suicide seemed like an option. "Snapshots" reminds us that a good life arises less from luck and more from finding ways to abide with, and perhaps transcend our misfortunes. It also reminds us that it is by her faith, persistence, and courage that a woman gives birth to what can never be lost -- herself. Cathy Sosnowsky''s inspiring story proves Simone de Beauvoir''s famous words: "One is not born a woman, one becomes one".

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA thoughtful, down-to-earth, contemporary guide to help partners identify and address relationship-killing behavior patterns in their own lives.Good people can be bad at relationships. One night during his divorce, after one too many vodkas and a call with a phone-in-therapist who told him to “journal his feelings,” Matthew Fray started a blog. He needed to figure out how his ex-wife went from the eighteen-year-old college freshman who adored him to the angry woman who thought he was an asshole and left him. As he pieced together the story of his marriage and its end, Matthew began to realize a hard truth: even though he was a decent guy, he was a bad husband.  As he shared raw, uncomfortable, and darkly humorous first-person stories about the lessons he’d learned from his failed marriage, a peculiar thing happened. Matthew started to gain a following. In January 2016 a post he wrote—“She Divorced Me Because I left the Dishes by the Sink”—went viral and was read over four million times.Filtered through the lens of his own surprising, life-changing experience and his years counseling couples, This Is How Your Marriage Ends exposes the root problem of so many relationships that go wrong. We simply haven’t been taught any of the necessary skills, Matthew explains. In fact, it is sometimes the assumption that we are acting on good intentions that causes us to alienate our partners and foment mistrust. With the humorous, entertaining, and counterintuitive approach of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, and the practical insights of The 5 Love Languages, This is How Your Marriage Ends helps readers identify relationship-killing behavior patterns in their own lives, and offers solutions to break free from the cycles of dysfunction and destruction. It is must-read for every partner no matter what stage-beginning, middle, or even end—of your relationship.

  • Oxford University Press The Origin of Everyday Moods Managing Energy

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisCaffeine. Candy. Sex. Shopping. Smoking. Whether we realize it or not, all of us have strategies for self-medicating ourselves when we feel threatened or overwhelmed by tension or tiredness. But why does one person respond to pressure by going for a five-mile run, while another indulges in a five-hour drinking marathon? Why do some of us crave companionship, while others just want to be alone? And what really helps most to reduce tension and increase energy, a brisk ten-minute walk, twenty minutes of meditation, or two hours of watching TV? In this fascinating new book, nationally known psychologist Robert E. Thayer serves as an expert guide through the latest research into moods and mood management, offering proven techniques for putting today''s most important breakthroughs to work in our day-to-day lives. Thayer, whose own work on the biopsychology of moods has been widely discussed in the leading scientific journals - as well as in the pages of Reader''s Digest, Prevention, USA Today, McCall''s, Good Housekeeping, Men''s Health, Redbook, and hundreds of other magazines and newspapers - evaluates the hard scientific evidence as he reveals which behaviors energize and empower us, and which sabotage our best interests. (Just five or ten minutes of walking, for example, can enhance mood for an hour or more, while sugar snacking, Thayer shows, causes more tension than it reduces.) Thayer argues that when we learn to see moods as vital barometers of our whole psychology and physiology, rather than mysterious, purely emotional reactions to events around us, we not only understand ourselves better, we have the opportunity to substantially improve our personal effectiveness, both mentally and physically. Thayer offers compelling evidence that our moods - particularly feelings of energy and tension - are closely tied to the rhythms of our evolutionary past. They are directly affected by our health, the food we eat, the amount of sleep we get, exercise (or lack of it), and the time of day. We learn why problems seem more serious late at night, and why a simple disagreement with a co-worker or spouse is more apt to turn into an emotional flare-up at certain times of day. We investigate key differences in the most common ways men and women deal with bad moods, and probe the implications of these findings on our understanding of alcoholism and depression. Far from a shallow quick fix book, Everyday Moods: Energy and Tension is an in-depth exploration of the origins and influences of moods that affect us every day of our lives. It brings readers to a new understanding of the underlying biology of their daily cycles of energy and tension, and offers powerful recommendations for breaking self-destructive habits and leading a richer, more enjoyable life.Trade ReviewWhile writers of "pop psychology" books are notorious for passing off their own unsubstantiated notions as scientific fact, Thayer is careful to avoid this trap. The book is readable and easily digestible by nonscientists, while for those who want to know more about the scientific background there is a comprehensive series of notes and full references. * New Scientist *Table of ContentsPart 1: Introduction ; Ch. 1. By learning compassion and mercy for ourselves and by recognizing what is most profoundly true about who we are and what we need, we can gain the self-acceptance so that whatever we choose to do, in this moment, it is wholly enough. Muller mixes the wri
