As such it will surely prove to be an invaluable resource for both academics and practitioners of public finance.'EMMANUEL TUMUSIIME-MUTEBILE, Governor of the Bank of Uganda 'This Handbook brings together an extraordinary array of public financial management experts and their collective experience to provide a comprehensive repository of cutting-edge knowledge. It is a must read for students and practitioners especially after the global financial and Eurozone crises have rudely awakened the world to the importance of the linkages between public financial and macro-fiscal management and their influence on constructing rules and institutions that can be implemented in specific political economy contexts.'SANJAY PRADHAN, Vice President, World Bank InstituteThis extremely comprehensive and well-researched volume covers topics of tremendously broad and practical interest, written by many of the world's leading experts on these subjects. I know of no other collection that comes anywhere close to addressing the whole of international financial management, from initial budget planning through adoption, execution, and evaluation. This book represents an invaluable contribution to the field, and will benefit students and government officials alike.PHILIP JOYCE, University of Maryland School of Public Policy and Editor, Public Budgeting & Finance The field of Public Financial Management has grown in sophistication and complexity over recent decades. This volume brings some of the most important topics together in thought-provoking ways. It blends technical, political and managerial perspectives in a manner that fosters honest discussion about the subject. The message it sends is clear. There is a lot to discuss, and there are many perspectives.MATT ANDREWS, Harvard Kennedy School'By providing a fresh perspective not only on the bread and butter of public financial management, but also on innovative themes, the Handbook is a valuable and comprehensive guide to the field, and sure to become a first reference for the practitioner and student.'NEIL COLE, Collaborative African Budget Reform Initiative, CABRI'This is a virtual encyclopedia of public financial management, covering all aspects of the budget cycle. I am confident the volume will become a standard reference in this critically important field.'JON BLONDAL, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, OECD'Improving our understanding of public financial management is crucial as nations seek to correct fiscal imbalances stemming from the global economic and financial crisis. An important contribution of this Handbook is in emphasizing the importance of collaborative approaches to reform, bringing together knowledge from economics, public finance, political science, law, organizational development, computer science and human resource management.'CLAY WESTCOTT, Senior Editor, International Public Management Review'This is an important Handbook that provides a very practical 'how to' guide to all aspects of public financial management that are now taken to constitute best practice. It should be of interest to practitioners in governments and policy-related institutes around the world. The volume also contains new perspectives on the political economy of institutional change. Some of the chapters would thus be of interest to researchers working in the relatively new area of institutional change and governance, or why certain prescriptions or best practices so often fail, despite the high quality advice that is now available.'EHTISHAM AHMAD, London School of Economics and Political Science and University of Bonn 'Public financial management reform takes time, is complex and has to consider the local environment, including key political economy factors. This volume, written and edited by some of the world's leading experts on the subject, will be indispensible for all those involved with such challenges.'ANDY WYNNE, Editor, International Journal of Governmental Financial Management Table of ContentsIntroductionPART I: THE INSTITUTIONAL AND LEGAL FRAMEWORK The Macroeconomic Framework for Managing Public Finances in a Global EnvironmentFiscal Rules and Public Financial ManagementThe Legal Framework for Public Finances and Budget SystemsPolitical Economy Aspects of Managing Public FinancesRole, Responsibilities and Structure of Central Finance AgenciesRole of the Legislature in Budget ProcessesStrengthening Performance in Public Financial ManagementPART II: ALLOCATION OF RESOURCES The Coverage and Classification of the BudgetPolicy Formulation and the Budget ProcessMedium-term Fiscal and Expenditure FrameworksManaging for Results and Performance Budgeting Fiscal Federalism and Intergovernmental Financial RelationsPART III: MANAGING BUDGET EXECUTIONThe Budget Execution Cycle Public ProcurementManaging Government PayrollThe Treasury Function and Treasury Single AccountsInternal Control and Internal Audit Managing Extra-budgetary FundsPART IV: MANAGING GOVERNMENT REVENUESTax Design from a Fiscal Management PerspectiveRevenue Forecasting Efficient Revenue Administration Customs Administration User Charges and EarmarkingManaging Natural Resource Revenues Managing External Aid PART V: LIABILITY AND ASSET MANAGEMENTGovernment Balance SheetsPublic Investment Management and PPPsManaging Fiscal RisksSovereign Wealth FundsLong-term Obligations and Generational AccountingCash Management and Debt ManagementManaging State-owned Enterprises PART VII: ACCOUNTING, REPORTING AND OVERSIGHT OF PUBLIC FINANCESStrengthening Fiscal Transparency Government Accounting Standards and Policies Government Financial Reporting Standards and Practices Financial Management Information Systems External Audit Role of Independent Fiscal AgenciesAbout the Editors and ContributorsGlossary ReferencesIndex

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisNowadays, the relevance of Corporate Social Responsibility in private firms is undeniable as well as it is increasingly important for public organizations. Although the idea that firms had some responsibilities to society beyond that of making profits has been around for centuries, it was not until the end of the last century that CSR became a reality in business and one of the determinant factors that has been taken into account in decision-making. A good diversity management strategy as well as the development of a suitable accountability policy are decisive for being considered as a socially responsible organization. Notwithstanding, it seems that in some cultural environments it is no longer enough to be socially responsible. Stakeholders demand transparency and to know more about the CSR engagement of each organisation. In this sense, companies should include CSR in their core strategy and go beyond their commitment to CSR and to carry out a proper CSR communication strategy. All these sustainable behaviours will have an impact on companies reputations if they are recognised by their stakeholders. This book aims to provide more evidence to the field of knowledge through the study of this topic by considering the points of view from diverse fields of knowledge and applying different empirical methodologies.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisStress related work, although always present, is considered one of the new risks for occupational medicine. This is largely due to a general change in the organization of work, inevitable in a constantly evolving market. It is also due to the presence of objective and subjective indicators that allow a satisfactory, though very complex, risk assessment. Related work stress generates repercussions on the company at every level, with a reduction in productivity, a reduction in the corporate image, a reduction in the quality of service, an increase in absenteeism and the dissatisfaction of workers. Some of these aspects are often submerged and difficult to identify. Related work stress also generate significant costs, both direct and indirect, for companies. A budgeted economic investment will be useful for forward-looking companies, especially for large companies. This book, written by authors from all over the world, will analyze some aspects of this increasingly relevant subject.Table of ContentsFor more information, please visit our website at:https://novapublishers.com/shop/occupational-stress-risk-factors-prevention-and-management-strategies/

  • Crisis Management: Introducing Companies

Nova Science Publishers Inc Crisis Management: Introducing Companies

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn all societies, the normal flow of life is occasionally interrupted by critical episodes, accompanied by a sense of threat and insecurity, challenging the way in which people understand the world around them. Such situations, called crises, can be caused by natural forces (earthquakes, tsunamis, storm winds, torrential rain, snowstorms, avalanches, epidemics), intentional actions of "others" (ie: various enemies inside or outside the society) -- international conflicts and war, terrorist attacks -- and human errors in managing technology, to name a few. But their roots may also be in poorly functioning socio-technical and administrative systems (infrastructure breakdowns, industrial accidents, economic crises, and political scandals). Historically, we can say that crises are increasing in number and becoming more diverse by nature. In the early development of civilisation, the main threat came from nature and conflicts between human groups, whereas in modern post-industrial societies, these are joined by risks coming from engineering and technology. In addition to old crises whose causes, consequences and time curves are more or less known, modern crises also appear, against which the human mind is powerless, organisational capacities are insufficient, and which make the public existentially concerned.Table of ContentsFor more information, please visit our website at:https://novapublishers.com/shop/crisis-management-introducing-companies-organizational-reactivity-and-flexibility/

Nova Science Publishers Inc Advances in Business and Management: Volume 16

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe opening chapter of Advances in Business and Management. Volume 16 studies the determinants of the unemployment duration for university graduates in Spain. The results of these studies showed that the duration of unemployment was significantly associated with the graduate''s age, participation in internship programs, field of study, type of university, and gender. Next, the authors utilize the empirically validated assumptions of two contemporary theories on team motivation (social identity theory and the theory on joint production motivation) to provide an organizational behaviour perspective to the jettisoning of Japanese management philosophy. This compilation also analyzes the political struggle that took place during 1994-1995 in Israel''s Histadrut (General Federation of Labor) under the leadership of Haim Ramon that eventually caused goal transformation within the union. The study in the following chapter aims to identify the impact of social media on the people of Bangladesh as consumers. The authors go on to focus on recent changes in business communication in the past two decades from a sociolinguistics point of view. Later, it is proposed that given the exponential increase of internet users, it is important to study how enterprises have been working and innovating their online communication tools, as well understand how they can improve the communication through these online channel, in order to cover increasing competition in the different business areas. Additionally, this collection demonstrates that there are significant differences in manners of communication that appear to be a very important factor in making some organizations more successful than others. The concluding chapter suggests a combination of a single cost-plus transfer price and the pragmatic process of negotiation assuming non-linear net average revenue curves.

Book SynopsisThe application of projects in various organizational settings and for multiple purposes is accelerating at a rapid pace. Increasingly public and private sector institutions and enterprises appreciate the value of projects to render services and products on time, within budget and according to quality specifications. The ultimate success of projects is, however, dependent on the professional expertise of dedicated support staff. The role and responsibilities of project administrators are therefore rapidly growing to establish administrative support structures, systems and processes, as well as adequate project controls, document management, and stakeholder communication. Project host organizations, project managers and governance bodies, such as steering committees, need to be strongly supported to ensure that the hands of key role-players are strengthened through accurate record-keeping, archival services, project management information systems, control systems, and team support. For this purpose, organizational arrangements such as project management units, project support offices, and project management offices are established to facilitate institutional memory and to embed the principles of a learning organization as far as project best practices are concerned. The body of knowledge of Project Management is also highly dynamic and is expanding to incorporate the exciting world of project support services. The purpose of this publication is to provide an overview of the nature of project support services with particular reference to the roles and responsibilities of project administrators. The publication covers the following key areas: the fundamentals of project management including concepts, principles, life cycle phases, PMBOK, and methodologies; the nature of project support services, including the typical job profile and responsibilities of project administrators; support through organizational and project governance arrangements; project planning support; project controls, reviews, and reporting support; and project team support and self-management. This publication is a must-read for project practitioners in the field of project support services and business administration, and also serves as an invaluable text book to train project support staff. Various self-assessment exercises and practical examples are included to aid this purpose.

Book SynopsisGlobalisation has moved through several change phases from capitalistic philosophy to democratic business notions involving stakeholders in the process of business growth. Large companies are seeking to harness globalisation through cooperation with the local enterprises to reach the bottom-of-the-pyramid market segment. The opportunities for global businesses are expanding with the support of rapidly emerging product markets, the global race for innovation, technology, and talent management, which tend to widen the impact of digitisation. The multinational companies today are engaging with the local enterprises to exploit reverse innovations and build new business models. This edited volume spread across fourteen distinguished articles aims at bringing together rich discussions on global-local convergence in reference to emerging markets. The impact on business-to-business and business-to-consumers imperatives, global-local convergence, and vice-versa effects that are driving the national economy are discussed through conceptual and empirical research papers. Discussions in this volume would critically analyse the convergence of technology, business practices, public policies, political ideologies, and consumer values for improving business performance at the global-local paradigm. This book will serve as a reference book and is widely useful to researchers engaged in exploring the small-business development in emerging markets and the effects of expansion of multinational companies into the emerging markets. The research papers and essays compiled in this volume will be enriching knowledge on business management among policy makers, corporate managers, and students of graduate management programs. In our view, graduate management students, potential researchers, and corporate managers will find this volume interesting for carrying out future research.

  • Nova Science Publishers Inc Neuromanagement: Neuroscience for Organizations

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book focuses on applying neuroscience to organizational and managerial contexts, observing its possible applications, present and future potentials, and highlighting the possible criticalities of using neuroscientific paradigms and techniques applied to the management field. Specifically, the first part of the volume aims to offer an overview of how the adoption of an approach and a "neuroscientific mentality" allows to analyse and promote a change, with a view to the promotion of some fundamental components in the organizational context, such as leadership, confident behaviour, business morality and ethics, and stress management. In particular, each of these components is observed through a neuroscientific perspective to offer elements for the promotion of a climate of well-being in the workplace. These aspects are also taken up in the second part of the volume, which focuses mainly on the application of neuroscience to the organizational context, providing evidence on how the use of specific neuroscientific techniques and paradigms, such as those of neuroassessment and neuroenhancement, allows to evaluate and strengthen the executive functions of individuals, to better manage the stress levels and the emotional load of individuals by improving their work performance. In addition to highlighting the impact and effectiveness of some neuroscientific paradigms, the second part of this book highlights the impact of Industry 4.0 on automation and technological developments, such as distance learning in the workplace, from a neuroscientific point of view. Therefore, this book aims to provide a broad overview of how neuroscience within the organisational context allows to fully explore individuals' behaviour by "modifying" it to promote well-being, functional management of stress, and promote a generative climate and encourage trust.Table of ContentsPreface; Leaders Brains: How to Discover and Improve Them; Trusting and Rewarded Brains; To Be or Not to Be Moral in Organizations?; Un-Stressed Mind: Neuroscientific Applications for Stress Management at the Workplace; Neuroassessment: Neurometrics for Assessment in Organizations; From the Evaluation of Executive Functions (EFs) to Neuroempowerment for Organizations; Neurocognitive Enhancement in Organizations: Challenges and Opportunities; Industry 4.0 and Automation: The Contribution of Applied Neuroscience; Digital-Learning for Organization: Insights from Cognitive Neuroscience; Index.

  • Academic Leadership

Nova Science Publishers Inc Academic Leadership

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisManagement and leadership have become increasingly important issues in academic context and in educational organisations. This is reflected in the growing branch of literature dealing with the topic. Many books, papers and studies on academic leadership treat academic institutions as rather homogenous entities. Although it is commonly accepted that there is no one best way to lead -- good leadership depends on context and on culture -- little attention has been paid to academic leadership in the contexts of different disciplinary or departmental cultures. The book focuses on four distinct disciplines (history, sociology, biology and physics). The material is based on 56 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with scholars in eight departments representing these disciplines. Leadership histories and cultures of the academic departments form the basis of the case studies analysed in this study. The case studies demonstrate how diverse value-orientations and perspectives inherent in the cultures of the disciplines and specialisms, and local cultural processes in the departments, together direct and affect academic leadership. Academic leaders may affect these processes, but a strong local culture may considerably frame the expectations connected to leadership. The book highlights how leadership practices and preferences concerning leadership can vary considerably in different disciplinary, departmental and historical contexts. Leaders and managers in universities and other educational organisations will benefit from the resulting insight and understanding of cultural and social dynamics in the units and departments they are leading.

Book SynopsisHistory is filled with accounts of great leaders, but how did they become so? Written for emergent leaders in any endeavor, this new work from renowned consultant Richard Strozzi-Heckler offers a new approach to leadership. The first book of its kind to base business and management strength on integral body awareness, the book presents key principles such as shugyo, or self-cultivation, as crucial in developing the individual responsibility, social commitment, and moral and spiritual vision required to lead with authority and efficacy. The Leadership Dojo is based on three questions: What does a leader do? What are the character values most essential to exemplary leadership? How do you teach these values? Drawing on the wisdom of ages from Plato to the Bhagavad-Gita, from Thucydides to the Abidharma, the book asserts that understanding and answering these questions holds the key to superior leadership skills. Strozzi-Heckler teaches with real-world examples based on his wide experience training decision-makers at companies like AT&T and Microsoft. The book’s multifaceted approach helps readers establish a powerful Leadership Presence, a platform from which they can take ethical action with compassion and pragmatic wisdom.

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis"Entrepreneurial Management & Public Policy" tells the unfolding story of the paradigm shift from sovereignty, the public interest, and citizen-based governance and government; towards privatisation, contracts, and customer-based government and business. It analyses the benefits and dysfunctions of substituting market-based efficiency (output over input) policies and decisions for those grounded in the public interest and based on effectiveness (output over standards, eg: safety and security). It also reminds us that constant vigilance has become more significant when vested interests often disappear in this increasingly complex environment where sector blurring has become a common experience. Leading scholars analyse the public and private sector theories, practices, systems, networks, infrastructures and results of privatising public policy over the last few decades. This catalytic shift emerged from the: re-engineering, reinventing, total quality management, deregulation, contracting out, franchising, competition, managerialism, and entrepreneurialism that have impacted governments, budgets, citizens, contractors, governance systems, and public policy so significantly that it has transformed the field. Specific focus is placed on the management, governance, ethics, entrepreneurialism and performance of the following, among others: FEMA and emergency management; the IRS and service quality in the internet economy; the greening of industry through government-supervised, self-regulation; Homeland security and safety from terrorism; market driven academic management; NASA and its management of the space shuttle program; and, ethical entrepreneurial financial management. This second edition helps students of business and public policy to analyse the challenges and opportunities involved in optimally managing the costs and benefits of competitive efficiency with those of more collaborative effectiveness, for the good of citizens and customers in an increasingly market driven and entrepreneurially-oriented public policy environment. This unfolding 21st century reality calls for a new type of visionary and ethical leaders and managers with both public and private sector skills who can embrace both the challenges and the opportunities presented in order to optimally perform in our increasingly complex entrepreneurial public policy environment.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisRecently, scholars and practitioners have focused on the inverse relationship between managerial payment and corporate performance, which shows how the principle-agent theory cannot adequately explain the decision mechanism of managerial payment. Based on the Managerial Power Approach, the book brings managerial discretion into the investigation on managerial pay. The book makes contributions such as: it constructs measurement index system of managerial discretion based on public reports. The classical ERIC questionnaire measures managerial discretion directly from CEO''s by 63 items, while the book divides managerial discretion into resource co-operation power, structure-position power and expertise-reputation power, and then measures them by public report. The two methods have the similar results, and this method has the advantage of being low cost, and easily carried out. It confirms that managerial discretion can manipulate the managerial pay level by the regression analysis of managerial discretion and managerial pay level. It also confirms that the pay level goes beyond the reasonable level too much with the accretion of managerial discretion, which shows that the manipulation effect on pay level does exist. then the book describes the manipulation effect quantitatively. By curve estimation of monitoring intensity effect on manipulation effect, it also gives other relationship curves between them, which shows that the manipulation effect decreases significantly with the accretion of managerial discretion. The book constructs pay performance sensitivity model based managerial discretion. Based on Saltuk Model, the book brings managerial discretion and proves that managerial discretion and pay-performance sensitivity are negatively associated. Then the book confirms that pay performance sensitivity will decrease with an increase of managerial discretion by regressional analysis.

Book SynopsisToday''s manufacturing organisations in Mexico are increasingly confronting new markets, new competition, and greater customer expectations. Being immersed in this highly competitive environment is considered relevant for manufacturing SMEs to achieve optimal organisational performance, through efficient work processes, and leading the company to accomplish the competitiveness that the market demands. With this process, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Mexico face manifold difficulties in reference to the operational efficiency required to stay in the market. While globalisation poses challenges and opportunities for the development of enterprises, SMEs have not found a way to exploit this conjuncture, and they may not be sufficiently competitive with new market requirements. This book, with the incorporation of the theoretical review of the concepts involved, and the empirical study, which shows the relationship between organisational performance and competitiveness from the perspective of resource-based theory, provides greater understanding of this theoretical connection through non-experimental research; of trans-sectional type; and with a correlational/causal approach.
