Book SynopsisHow disastersthat have wrecked work sites throughout American history, in all parts of the nation and all sectors of the economyhave also inspired policy reform. Workplace disasters have wreaked havoc on countless American workers and their families. They have resulted in widespread death and disability as well as the loss of property and savings. These tragic events have also inspired safety reforms that reshaped labor conditions in ways that partially compensated for death, suffering, and social dislocation. In Havoc and Reform, James P. Kraft encourages readers to think about such disastrous events in new ways. Placing the problem of workplace safety in historical context, Kraft focuses on five catastrophes that shocked the nation in the half century after World War II, a time when service-oriented industries became the nation's leading engines of job growth. Looking to growing areas of economic life in the Western Sunbelt, Kraft touches on the 1947 explosion of the Texas City MonTable of ContentsAcknowledgmentsIntroduction1. State University of New York Press Feminists Reclaim Mentorship
Book SynopsisFeminists revisit their mixed experiences of mentoring and being mentored to reclaim mentorship as a project for new generations.Mentorship continues to loom large in stories about women''s work and personal lives- sometimes for the better, but often for the worse. If mentors can nurture and support, they can also bitterly disappoint, reproducing the hardships they once suffered and reinforcing the same old hierarchies and inequities. The stories gathered in Feminists Reclaim Mentorship challenge our fundamental assumptions about mentorship, illuminating the obstacles that make it difficult to connect meaningfully and ethically while reimagining the possibilities for reciprocity. Does mentorship require sameness? Might we find more inventive, collaborative ways to bond than the traditional top-down model of mentoring? Drawing on their experiences in academia, creative writing, publishing, and journalism, the volume''s editors, Nancy K. Miller and Tahneer Oksman, and their twenty-six contributors collectively strive for relationships that acknowledge differences alongside the importance of common bonds. Feminists Reclaim Mentorship will resonate across workspaces and arrives at a moment when the need to form feminist connections within and between generations couldn''t feel more urgent.

Rowman & Littlefield The New CEOs
Book SynopsisThe New CEOs looks at the women and people of color leading Fortune 500 companies, exploring the factors that have helped them achieve success and their impact on the business world and society more broadly. As recently as fifteen years ago, there had only been three women CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, and no African Americans. By now there have been more than 100 women, African American, Latino, and Asian-American CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. Richard L. Zweigenhaft and G. William Domhoff look at these new CEOs closely. Weaving compelling interview excerpts with new research, the book traces how these new CEOs came to power, questions whether they differ from white male Fortune 500 CEOs in meaningful ways, asks whether the companies that hired them differ from other companies, and discusses what we can learn about power in America from the emergence of these new CEOs. As Americans continue to debate corporate compensation, glass ceilings, and colorblind relationships, The New CEOs sTrade ReviewAccording to Zweigenhaft (psychology, Guildford Coll.; Diversity in the Power Elite: How It Happened, Why It Matters) and Domhoff (sociology, Univ. of California; Who Rules America? Challenges to Corporate and Class Dominance), there are 74 women and people of color who have been at the helm of Fortune 500 companies. This book seeks not to analyze why, but rather to explore the individuals themselves-their backgrounds as well as their impact on the companies they lead. The first chapter is devoted to women CEOs, and subsequent chapters individually address each of the ethnicities (further divided by CEO and heritage). The book's latter part is a comparison between traditional CEOs and companies led by the 'new CEOs.' Zweigenhaft and Domhoff clearly and concisely profile the CEOs and companies using a combination of biographical and data-driven research. There are no comparable works available. VERDICT This book succeeds at showing the intersection of culture, politics, ethnicity, and feminism through the lens of business diversity studies. An excellent book for scholars interested in data-driven sociology, psychology, and cultural studies relating to business and for readers in the business world. * Library Journal *Recommended reading. * Intel Connected Digest *Glass ceilings and unequal compensation continue to be the norm for American businesses, yet as this informative text highlights, women and people of color are growing in number as leaders of Fortune 500 companies and having a significant impact on the future of business. * Uptown Professional *This book is sobering in how to show us what many African-Americans corporate executives routinely say to each other about their corporations: 'Much has changed, but much has stayed the same.' * American Journal of Sociology *Filled with sometimes startling statistics, interviews with this new group of leaders make for compelling reading. These CEOs reveal how they came to power, the insights they gained, and how they differ from male CEOs who historically dominated major companies. They also address ongoing issues, including the current debate over CEO compensation. There is little doubt that this influx of new CEOs is bringing major changes to an increasingly globalized world. The New CEOs should be on the must-read list for leaders and potential leaders in all organizations. * Business Lexington *Here, with another year of information to draw upon, we look at the New CEOs in terms of class and gender, using an intersectional analysis to help explain who becomes a New CEO—and who does not. * The Society Pages *Richard Zweigenhaft and William Domhoff document the nature of this millennial shift, the paths to power of this new breed of CEOs, and the subsequent stall in the growth of this group in their excellent book, The New CEOs. . . Zweigenhaft and Domhoff have done a meticulous job working with a small data set, comparing the career paths of this group with a larger sample of business leaders, generating hypotheses based on a careful analysis of field and archival data, and constructing a novel sociological model of careers for members of these groups. * Contemporary Sociology *In this new book by Richard Zweigenhaft and G. William Domhoff, the authors prove they are the best among social and behavioral scientists writing about diversity and inclusion. The findings they present are accessible, yet challenging, and the inclusion of appendices, tables, and figures are immensely helpful. It will be essential reading for anyone interested in the new global political economy. This book can be used in both undergraduate and graduate course in the liberal arts and especially as a primary text in business schools. -- Earl Smith, PhD, Professor of Sociology and Women and Gender Studies, George Mason University, author of Policing Black Bodies: How Black Lives Are Surveilled and How to Work for Change. The New CEOs provides very valuable information for those with interests in inequality and diversity. The careful research that Zweigenhaft and Domhoff have provided in their body of work on how the power elite has been changing, from attendees at elite private schools, to membership on key policy boards and on boards of directors of major corporations, and now to appointment as CEO of the nation’s largest corporations, has provided a wealth of information that helps us interpret trends and draw conclusions about social processes. This book is especially noteworthy because it not only provides the descriptive information about who has reached these positions and what their individual stories entail, but it also asks and endeavors to answer whether having diversity at the highest level of corporations makes a difference and whether we can expect for the trends to continue. The book is thorough, drawing from multiple sources of data to provide a profile of the new CEOs, to document the pathways that led them to the top jobs in major companies, and to compare them with white men who have otherwise held these positions. The analysis also compares the performance of these CEOs with those in comparable companies. All around a useful and important contribution to the literature on inequality and diversity. -- Nancy DiTomaso, Vice Dean for Faculty and Research and Professor of Management and Global Business, Rutgers University School of BusinessThe New CEOs is a unique and compelling analysis of the factors that promote (or hinder) demographic diversity among the top brass of American industry. The combination of historical, biographical, and empirical accounts create a rich narrative that is both scholarly and engaging. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the evolving profile of the corporate 'chieftain.' -- Robert Livingston, Professor and Head of Organisational Behaviour, University of SussexTable of ContentsPreface Chapter 1: Setting the Stage: The Changing Role of the CEO and the Recent Emergence of Women, African American, Latino and Asian American CEOs Chapter 2: The Women Fortune 500 CEOs Chapter 3: The African American Fortune 500 CEOs Chapter 4: Going Global: Latino and Asian American Fortune 500 CEOs Chapter 5: Where Do They Fit in the Corporate Elite, and How Do They Compare with Jewish and Gentile Male CEOs? Taylor Trade Publishing Sex and the Office
Book SynopsisIn Sex and the Office, Kim Elsesser delves into how invisible workplace barriers (the Sex Partition) have the greatest impact on the careers of women. Elsesser offers practical advice on how to break down the Sex Partition and reveals the best strategies for networking with the opposite sex.Trade ReviewI think Elsesser has taken risks with Sex and the Office: she’s written a brave and sensible book that resonates like the first play of a good pop song. Even though you haven’t heard it before, you sort of already know it. * The Times (UK) *The difficulties facing women in high-level jobs are not always borne of malice—often they result from run-of-the-mill discomfort and anxiety, says scholar and journalist Elsesser. She should know; she went to MIT when the graduate student body there was more than 80% male and worked at the Morgan Stanley trading floor when female traders were few and far between. The changing boundaries and rules regarding acceptable behavior both in the workplace and at work-related social events, she argues, can have a detrimental effect on workplace relationships—and, consequently, on women's careers. Both men and women struggle with distinguishing between friendliness and sexual harassment, and with handling compliments to coworkers, outings on business trips, and networking—not to mention workplace romances. How to overcome those barriers, which keep men and women fearful of and apart from each other in the workplace? Elsesser adeptly provides both philosophical and granular help to managers, leaders, and anyone else looking to navigate the tricky gender partitions which exist in the workplace. A helpful, thoughtful, compassionate guide. * Publishers Weekly *[T]his book bravely takes on the ways that our current obsession with legislating contact between the sexes-usually 'to keep people from suing the corporation' - has hurt women, because men fear that extracurricular contact with the opposite sex can be construed as harassment. . . .[Elsesser] introduces data that shows how hard it is for people who spend a lot of time together at work not to be attracted to each other, something called the 'mere exposure effect'. * Elle *‘an unexpectedly thrilling read. .. .it says a load of stuff no one else is daring to say about the way men and women relate, or rather, fail to relate, professionally. .. .the book is filled with anecdotes. .. .all of which further illustrate the pickle in which we now find.' - The Times Magazine * The Times [U.K.] *This book represents the best of what smart social scientists do. Elsesser identifies a real problem that has serious consequences for women’s well-being and advancement at work. What is especially clever about Elsesser’s take is that, unlike other recent books, she doesn’t blame men or women. Instead, she focuses on how the modern workplace and heightened awareness of sexual harassment issues have created an unfortunate barrier between men and women. -- Matt Lieberman PhD, professor of psychology, psychiatry, and biobehavioral sciences, UCLA; author of Social: Why Our Brains Are Wired to ConnectThe author bravely looks into the unintended consequences of sexual harassment policies that have negatively affected the ability of male and female coworkers to maintain close friendships and hence better working relationships. -- Dr. Pepper Schwartz, professor of sociology, University of Washington; author of The Normal BarIn Sex and the Office, Kim Elsesser makes a compelling case for the reason we still lack gender equality in the workplace—and it’s not what you’d think. Written in an engaging, accessible, and snappy style, it will make you think differently about your interactions in the office from page one. An essential read for those interested in the dynamics of the modern workplace. -- Heidi Reeder PhD, author of Commit to Win: How to Harness the Four Elements of Commitment to Reach Your Goals; director of the Leadership and Human Relations Program, Boise State University

Book SynopsisThe Daily Grind: How Workers Navigate the Employment Relationship introduces students to the tensions between labor and management within the U.S. employment relationship and explores how workers, operating in a socially and culturally structured system of capitalism, are influenced and manipulated by economic institutions and polity which exploit, devalue, and dehumanize workers in the name of corporate profit. The text covers how the American work ethic of the early nineteenth century helped shape the current perspective on the labor-management relationship, and how, over time, the Protestant and patriarchal influences of that period have countered the collective actions of workers in profound ways. The text further explores the effect of societal, cultural, and economic structures, both global and local, which limit workers' ability to achieve the American Dream and result in depressed economic conditions and discouraged workers. Stanford University Press The Power of Being Divisive: Understanding
Book SynopsisIn the last decade, research on negative social evaluations, from adverse reputation to extreme stigmatization, has burgeoned both at the individual and organizational level. Thus far, this research has largely focused on major corporate risks. Corporate public relations and business executives intuitively know that a negative image deters important relationships—from customers and partners, to applicants, stakeholders, and potential funding. At the same time, business is conducted in an age of heightened connection, including digital platforms for criticism and a 24-hour news cycle. Executives know that some degree of public disapproval is increasingly unavoidable. Negative social evaluations can also put social actors on the map. In the era of identity politics, many political leaders express controversial views to appeal to specific audiences and gain in popularity. Through network and signaling effects, being controversial can potentially pay off. Thomas J. Roulet offers a framework for understanding not only how individuals and organizations can survive in an age of increasing scrutiny, but how negative social evaluations can surprisingly yield positive results. A growing body of work has begun to show that being "up against the rest" is an active driver of corporate identity, and that firms that face strong public hostility can benefit from internal bonding. Synthesizing this work with his original research, and drawing comparisons to work on misconduct and scandals, Roulet addresses an important gap by providing a broader perspective to link the antecedents and consequences of negative social evaluations. Moreover, he reveals the key role that audiences play in assessing these consequences, whether positive or negative, and the crucial function of media in establishing conditions in which public disapproval can bring positive results. Examples and cases cover Uber and Google, Monsanto, Electronic Arts, and the investment banking industry during the financial crisis. Trade Review"Thomas Roulet has very compellingly articulated the power of divisiveness in channeling negative social evaluations and perceived stigma to empower us into action and success, something that I have experienced personally in my professional life. Highly relevant and a must-read for professionals as well as researchers grappling with the velocity and impact of social perceptions in the increasingly digital world."—Navdeep Arora, former Senior Partner, McKinsey & Company"A careful and forensic analysis of why and how attacks by others on your capability or your character can in fact be positive and productive forces. The book takes us through a journey of in-groups, echo chambers, social trolls, post-truth narratives, and permanent peer evaluation to bring us fresh insights into the addictive practice of picking each other apart."—Rupert Younger, Director, Oxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation"This is a must-read for organization and management theory scholars. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the overlapping literatures that address how organizations are influenced by negative social evaluations. Roulet puts forward—convincingly—the strikingly counterintuitive idea that under certain conditions negative evaluations are beneficial—and, in contrast, that positive evaluations can have negative consequences for the targeted actors. How this happens, and the potential implications for society, are thought-provoking and often worrying. This is a timely and important book."—Royston Greenwood, Professor Emeritus, Alberta School of Business, University of Alberta, and Professorial Fellow, University of Edinburgh Business School"While not explicitly a management book, this is a fascinating study of the social-media fuelled and fast-changing landscape of public opinion, and the possible ways in which that might be beneficial."—Financial Times"Roulet's framework provides an important starting point for understanding how organizations and their members might survive in a world where everyone's a critic with easy access to a social platform."—Kimberly D. Elsbach, Administrative Science QuarterlyTable of ContentsIntroduction: A Framework to Understand Negative Social Evaluations 1. Where It All Begins: Understanding the Antecedents of Negative Social Evaluations 2. Resisting Hostility: Resilience to Negative Social Evaluations 3.
