Runners’ vocabulary is full of acronyms like DNS for “Did Not Start” and DNF for “Did Not Finish,” but when Mirna Valerio stepped up to the starting line, she needed a new one: DNQ for “Did Not Quit.” Valerio has tied on her running shoes all across the country, from the dusty back roads of central New Jersey to the busy Route 222 corridor in Pennsylvania to the sweltering deserts of Arizona. When you meet her on the trail, you might be surprised to see she doesn’t quite fit the typical image of a long-distance runner. She’s neither skinny nor white, and she’s here to show just how misguided these stereotypes can be. In this prejudice-busting, body-positive memoir told with raw honesty, an adventurous spirit, and a sharp sense of humor, Valerio takes readers along on her journey from first-time racer to ultramarathoner and proves that anyone can become a successful athlete.

Unsurprisingly, neither worked. After a visit to Sex Camp and many attempts to fix her 'broken' vagina, Fran decided to share her own hilarious, excruciating, and sometimes upsetting experiences. With the help of her 16 year old self's diary, expert advice, candid and enlightening interviews with others about sex, and some self-care exercises, Fran sets about trying to make herself, and other people, feel like they're not being gaslit by their own vaginas.

PublicAffairs,U.S. Ask Me About My Uterus: A Quest to Make Doctors

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the fall of 2010, Abby Norman's strong dancer's body dropped forty pounds and gray hairs began to sprout from her temples. She was repeatedly hospitalized in excruciating pain, but the doctors insisted it was a urinary tract infection and sent her home with antibiotics. Unable to get out of bed, much less attend class, Norman dropped out of college and embarked on what would become a years-long journey to discover what was wrong with her. It wasn't until she took matters into her own hands--securing a job in a hospital and educating herself over lunchtime reading in the medical library--that she found an accurate diagnosis of endometriosis. In Ask Me About My Uterus, Norman describes what it was like to have her pain dismissed, to be told it was all in her head, only to be taken seriously when she was accompanied by a boyfriend who confirmed that her sexual performance was, indeed, compromised. Putting her own trials into a broader historical, sociocultural, and political context, Norman shows that women's bodies have long been the battleground of a never-ending war for power, control, medical knowledge, and truth. It's time to refute the belief that being a woman is a preexisting condition.

Turner Publishing Company EndoMEtriosis: A Guide for Girls

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis valuable guide, both informative and moving, promotes endometriosis awareness for young women and those around them.—School Library Journal From the award-winning Dr. Tamer Seckin comes a book written for all of the Endo Warriors out there, from the thirteen-year-old girl who is being told that her pain is “part of becoming a women,” to the woman who has been misdiagnosed for decades—and needs to know she is not alone. Every girl has the right to be pain-free. To live the life they want to live. The journey toward new and happy lives for young women begins now! Endometriosis is a physically and mentally debilitating disease that has tortured women for centuries. It currently affects 176 million of childbearing age worldwide, including one in ten in the U.S. Despite those startling statistics, this horrific and incurable ailment is still relatively unknown to the general population and medical professionals alike. Symptoms of heavy periods and excruciating pain most often begin in middle school or high school, yet doctors take an average of twelve years to diagnose it in a patient. As a result, these undiagnosed and misdiagnosed women suffer into at least their mid-twenties or early thirties, repeatedly told that the pain is in their minds, that it’s simply part of becoming a woman, or that it’s caused by some other disease or condition. That nonsense must stop, and it must stop now! This book will explain what endo is in terms that adolescents can understand, along with potential remedies, treatments to avoid, and how to manage the psychological and social effects of the disease. It will also include riveting stories from women in their teens and mid-twenties, and from those closest to them such as mothers, fathers, teachers, and coaches. One of the most terrifying aspects of having endo is feeling like nobody believes the pain is real or severe, which can cause a woman to feel scared, isolated, and depressed. This book will fully arm her with the truth and knowledge about the disease so that she can overcome her fears and confidently advocate for herself. If her cry for help has been dismissed by anyone, she will be able to educate them so that they can empathize with her and fully support her in her quest for healing.Trade ReviewThis valuable guide, both informative and moving, promotes endometriosis awareness for young women and those around them.—School Library Journal

Book Synopsis"Holly Grigg-Spall is fearless, and her courageous advocacy on behalf of women whose stories are too often silenced is a model for others trying to make positive change through health activism. Read the book and get inspired, get angry, and most importantly get information. Sweetening the Pill is exactly the thing needed to energize and mobilize this important women's health conversation." Laura Eldridge, author of In Our Control: The Complete Guide to Contraceptive Choices for Women Millions of healthy women take a powerful medication every day from their mid-teens to menopause - the Pill - but few know how this drug works or the potential side effects. Contrary to cultural myth, the birth-control pill impacts on every organ and function of the body, and yet most women do not even think of it as a drug. Depression, anxiety, paranoia, rage, panic attacks - just a few of the effects of the Pill on half of the over 80% of women who pop these tablets during their lifetimes. When the Pill was released, it was thought that women would not submit to taking a medication each day when they were not sick. Now the Pill is making women sick. However, there are a growing number of women looking for non-hormonal alternatives for preventing pregnancy. In a bid to spark the backlash against hormonal contraceptives, this book asks: Why can't we criticize the Pill?Trade ReviewHolly Grigg-Spall effectively melts the candy coating that obscures a simple truth: what we don't know, can indeed hurt us. Sweetening the Pill, equal parts personal journey, investigative journalism and feminist manifesto, cracks open the paternalist and corporate-driven ethos of self-improvement that undermines women's body literacy. We've got to demand better: more transparency, more options and more support for self-determined health care. Getting there begins with the kind of courageous inquiry Grigg-Spall inspires. -- Chris Bobel, associate professor of Women's Studies at University of Massachusetts Boston and author of New Blood: Third Wave Feminism and the Politic Holly Grigg-Spall is fearless, and her courageous advocacy on behalf of women whose stories are too often silenced is a model for others trying to make positive change through health activism. Read the book and get inspired, get angry, and most importantly get information. Sweetening the Pill is exactly the thing needed to energize and mobilize this important women's health conversation. -- Laura Eldridge, author of In Our Control: The Complete Guide to Contraceptive Choices for Women In Sweetening the Pill, Holly Grigg-Spall lays out the reality of hormonal contraception, and the ubiquitous political and commercial interests at play, with breathtaking precision. With most young women using these drugs, and providers cynically side-stepping informed consent and respectful consultation, this is a core and urgent issue of our time. If you are interested in teen girl and womens' health, and the wellbeing and evolution of society as a whole, read Sweetening the Pill. It's a riveting read and a powerful tool for change. -- Jane Bennett, co-author of The Pill: Are You Sure It's For You? and The Natural Fertility Management Contraception Kit and A Blessing Not A Curse We discovered in the '70s that the personal is political. Holly Grigg-Spall starts with her and other women's personal experiences with the Pill, then thoughtfully and thoroughly considers it scientifically, medically and philosophically to discover the political truth of the Pill. She shares strategies for finding new ways to control our fertility while regaining control of our destiny. Grigg-Spall's careful study on the Pill's effect on women's health is long, long overdue. We are so busy fighting to keep hormonal birth control available that we don't want to question what it is doing to our health and our lives. After reading this book, we can never see the Pill in the same way again. -- Carol Downer, veteran women's health activist and author of A New View of a Woman's Body, How to Stay Out of the Gynecologist's Office, A Woman's Book Oral contraceptives have done so much for so many, but when they don't stand up to scrutiny, women have a right to know more. Sweetening The Pill is a fascinating and up-to-the-minute account of the persistent questions around the effects of birth-control pills. Holly Grigg-Spall's cross-cultural perspective provides keen insights into the impact of the latest US health care initiatives.Consolidating personal testimonies, current thought and the controversy surrounding the widespread and prolonged use of oral contraception, this book is a toolkit for action. -- Chella Quint, writer, performer and educator at Adventures in Menstruating

Book SynopsisAromatherapy has seen a huge surge in popularity in the past decade, and has proven effective for a wide array of women's health problems. However, the number of women interested in introducing aromatherapy to their personal health care dwarfs the number of clinicians formally trained in it. As a result, large numbers of women self-treat with aromatherapy, which can increase risk factors particularly during pregnancy and lactation. Condensing thorough research into concise, easy-to-digest language, this scientific evidence-based guide enables women's healthcare professionals and aromatherapists to quickly determine the safest and most effective way to apply aromatherapy in any given situation. The perfect bedside clinical guide for busy professionals, it covers 20 essential oils and their uses in women's health, from pregnancy to menopause. Readers will come away equipped with new tools to improve their patients' comfort and wellbeing, with the confidence of drawing from a reliable base of clinical evidence.Trade ReviewThis is a timely book, given the increasing numbers of women now using aromatherapy oils during pregnancy and birth. It will provide the nurse and nurse-midwife with valuable information to be able to advise women about the safety of aromatherapy in maternity care. I had the pleasure of working with Pam in the UK whilst she was completing a Masters' degree in Complementary Therapies at the University of Westminster, and I know that her focus is on safe and appropriate application of aromatherapy for pregnant and birthing women, supported by research evidence. -- Denise Tiran, FRCM, MSc, RM, PGCEA, Education Director at ExpectancyPam Conrad gracefully combines both the art and science of aromatherapy. She has a profound knowledge about the clinical use of essential oils but also the artful use of aromatherapy in daily life.As essential oils are so easily accessible as home remedies, it is very tempting to believe that there are no risks in using them. One main thing that I love and respect about Pam's teachings is that she puts safety first, especially for vulnerable patients like pregnant women, infants and young children. As parents and patients use essential oils for conditions ranging from benign viral illnesses to advanced malignancies, it is paramount for any medical health practitioner to have at least basic knowledge of the benefits and safety of essential oils. I highly recommend Pam's book to all my colleagues and patients. -- Dr Alina Olteanu, MD, PhD, FAAP, ABIHM, Whole Child TexasThis book represents years of nursing and midwifery practice, research and education in Women's Health aromatherapy. The mainstream popularity of aromatherapy necessitates an expert nursing aromatherapy guide for the safest, most effective care of women pregnancy-postpartumI highly recommend this book as a resource to nurses and all women considering aromatherapy during the pregnancy-postpartum stages. -- Birdie Gunyon Meyer, RN,MA Coordinator, Perinatal Mood Disorders Program, Indiana University Health, Past President Postpartum Support International PSIThis is essential information to provide safe guidance for our families choosing to utilize aromatherapy. I use this valuable information on a daily basis. -- Stephanie VanderHorst CNM, RN, Past President of Indiana Association of Nurse MidwivesPam's course on aromatherapy for women's health has been so beneficial for me in my practice as a nurse. The education I received has allowed me to practice safe aromatherapy for my pregnant and laboring mommas! Practicing clinically evidenced based aromatherapy is a must in the hospital setting. By having a book to help guide this practice that can be referenced while at the bedside would be an invaluable asset to the aromatherapy world as it begins to be used more and more in hospitals alongside traditional medicine. -- Katlyn Devereux RN, BSN, CMSRN, St. Elizabeth Medical Center, KentuckyPam Conrad is a Purdue trained nurse and valued NAHA Certified Clinical Aromatherapist®. In addition to being a registered nurse for over 25 years, Pam has studied abroad with Aromatherapy icons like Jane Buckle, Denise Tiran, and Ethel Burns. Pam is passionate about supporting women's health and evidence-based aromatherapy. In 2008, Pam developed the first US evidence-based hospital Aromatic Childbirth® nursing curriculum. There is a great need for practicing clinical nurses and therapists who follow an evidence based approach combined with experience gained in clinical practice. It is wonderful to see NAHA members like Pam who are active in authoring books, participating in studies, and teaching. I very much look forward to the publication of Pam's new book "Women's Health Aromatherapy". -- Annette Davis ND, Certified Clinical Aromatherapist & Nutritionist, President National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy NAHAAlthough there is an abundance of essential oil information flooding the market, very little is clinically evidenced based and safe for perinatal use. In fact much of the information is harmful. Pam Conrad's expertise and experience is what is needed for an OB/GYN aromatherapy guidebook for practicing professionals. -- Kathy Ryan RN CCAP, Perinatal Support Services St Vincents Women’s Hospital, Indianapolis, INWith the growing popularity of integrative medicine, essential oils have found their way back into health care. Historically anecdotal evidence or previous experience drove the choice of essential oils. However it is not enough for an oil just to smell good; healthcare professional must understand the oils reported benefits, potential risks, and contraindications as well as the current state of associated research. Book SynopsisIn early 2018, Erin Darcy created an online art project, In Her Shoes – Women of the Eighth, to safely and anonymously share private stories of the real and devastating impact of the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution of Ireland. In the five months leading up to the referendum on abortion, the project asked a simple question of undecided voters: put yourself in her shoes. Within weeks, Erin was receiving hundreds of stories from a broad spectrum of experiences of planned and unplanned terminations. By the time Ireland historically voted Yes to Repeal the Eighth on 25 May 2018, the page had gathered over 100,000 followers, was reaching over four million readers each week and had been featured by international news outlets. What began as a solo act of grassroots activism by a mother and an artist had unleashed a national conversation on human rights that would change Ireland forever. Where once there had been silence and shame, now there was honesty and empathy. For 43 per cent of voters, it was ‘stories in the media’ that influenced their decision to vote Yes. But for Erin Darcy, In Her Shoes was also a distraction from her own heartbreaking loss, loneliness and depression as she grieved her mother’s death and sought a community of her own. In time, it became an act of healing, as she connected with other women, mothers and campaigners who felt the same overwhelming need to do something. Here, In Her Shoes: Women of the Eighth reproduces thirty-two of those anonymous stories, representing the entire island of Ireland. Published with their authors’ consent and illustrated by Erin, they are powerful testimonies to storytelling as salvation from heartache, stigma and threat. Together, they record lived truths previously omitted from history and signal a monumental change in the social landscape of our country.

Book SynopsisChange can be unwelcome, but it usually brings new opportunities and the possibility of a fresh start. When the great change of the menopause begins to make itself felt in the life of a woman, the subsequent loss of fertility and the signs that one is getting older can trigger a life and identity crisis. In this essential guide, written from the holistic perspective of anthroposophical medicine, Eveline Daub-Amend shows how this turning point in a woman's biography can be a positive time of transformation: of entering a new phase of life with a fit and healthy body, mind and spirit. She discusses how symptoms can be treated using natural methods, and addresses emotional and psychological processes and changes. As a medical doctor and former gynaecologist, Daub-Amend gives authoritative guidance on many issues: the role played by hormones, changes in the menstrual cycle and hormonal balance, loss of fertility, contraception and the affects on sexuality and partnership. She gives advice on dealing with hot flushes, sleep disorders, irregular bleeding, pain in the joints, skin and hair care and weight and figure, as well as specific health problems such as osteoporosis, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and depression. She also considers complementary methods of treatment, the pros and cons of HRT and the significance of diet and exercise.

Book SynopsisLike many of us, Toni Terry has tried out every fitness and diet fad going. From gym memberships to detoxes, her characteristic determination got her through the punishing workouts and regimes. And yet, after a month or a year, she always got bored; something was missing and she wasn't quite achieving the results she'd hoped for. What changed and turned her into the social media phenomenon she is today was a whole new approach to fitness and eating well. And what was the magic ingredient? People. Feeling intimidated at the thought of working out on her own with a personal trainer, she hit on the idea of asking her friends to join her. As soon as she started exercising with friends and family, Toni not only started enjoying herself, she also grew more motivated, got the body she always wanted, and felt healthier and happier than ever before. The Buddy Workout will chronicle Toni's journey from her battle with a serious back condition as a teenager, to busy family life with world-class footballer John Terry and her passion for fitness and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Toni's easy-to-follow fitness programme includes workouts she does on a regular basis with her trainer Bradley Simmonds, and she'll also provide ideas for 5-minute workouts you can build into your busy life, top tips for keeping motivated and looking your best, as well as delicious and nutritious recipes you can share with family and friends.Trade ReviewI work out with Toni every week and I have to say I really look forward to our sessions together. Toni has worked so hard to achieve her goals and I'm consistently in awe of how she's able to juggle family life with all of her training and other commitments. Book SynopsisWinner of the Hearst Big Book Awards, 2019 - Women's Health's Book of the Year_____________Shocking, brilliant, important. A fine addition to the feminist canon. - Emma Jane UnsworthFor the first time I feel like I PROPERLY understand my vagina! I wish I had read this 23 years ago! - Scarlett Curtis_____________From earliest childhood, girls are misled about their bodies, encouraged to describe their genitalia with cute and silly names rather than anatomically correct terms. In our schools and in our culture, we are coy about women while putting straight men's sexuality front and centre. Girls grow up feeling ashamed about their periods, about the appearance of their vulvas, about their own desires. They grow up without a full and honest sex education, and this lack of knowledge has serious consequences: the number of women attending cervical screening appointments in the UK is at a 20-year low while labiaplasty is the fastest growing type of plastic surgery in the world. Vagina provides girls and women with information they need about their own bodies - about the vagina, the hymen, the clitoris, the orgasm; about conditions like endometriosis and vulvodynia. It confronts taboos, such as abortion, miscarriage, infertility and masturbation. It tackles vital social issues like period poverty, female genital mutilation and the rights of transgender women. It is honest and moving as Lynn Enright shares her personal stories but this is about more than one woman - this is a book that will provoke thousands of conversations. We urgently need to talk about women's sexual and reproductive health, about our experiences of sex and pregnancy and pain and pleasure. Vagina: A Re-Education will help us do just that.Trade ReviewThis vital, honest and empathetic look at vaginas (and vulvas, and why we muddle the two) is a must read for all of us...thorough, fascinating and kind. * Grazia *Superb...fascinating, moving and sometimes enraging...a genuinely empowering book. * Irish Times * Vagina is an eye-opening read, it will make you angry at the torture and shame that has been inflicted on people with vaginas. * Sunday Independent (Ireland) *[A] warm and essential future classic...I can't recommend it enough. -- Alexandra HeminsleyThis myth-busting book will enlighten and educate you. * Red *By shining a long-overdue spotlight on the vagina, Lynn Enright gets to the heart of some of the most urgent issues in female health right now, from the truth about HRT to the gender pain gap. Vagina is vital reading for those who are in possession of one - and those who aren't. * Women's Health *Intelligent, searingly written, brave and generous, this book holds a mirror to many things. Far from a reductive take on genitalia, Enright tackles the stigma, lies, misinformation and squeamishness that persist in holding us all prisoner in a male-dominated world. It's the vagina's special power to make and remake that world for the better. Everyone, regardless of what lies beneath, should read it. -- Olivia SudjicAbsolutely incredible. It's educational and informative while also managing to be a fierce rallying cry for women. -- Louise O'NeillBy turns witty, humane and moving, Vagina: A Re-Education is a memoir, a guide and a polemic. Most importantly, it's a rousing manifesto for women everywhere, and Lynn Enright is a brave and brilliant writer. I only wish that it had existed when I was young. -- Rhiannon Lucy CosslettBeautiful, well-written and fascinating - for the first time I feel like I PROPERLY understand my vagina! I wish I had read this 23 years ago! -- Scarlett Curtis, author of FEMINISTS DON'T WEAR PINK (AND OTHER LIES)I absolutely loved VAGINA: A RE-EDUCATION. A re-education is right. I feel like I know my body a million times better after reading this book. It's an unflinching and beautifully composed blend of memoir, personal essay and academic investigation. It has the lyricism of the best kind of creative non-fiction, the rigour of passionately curated research, and the heft of timely and much-needed body-focused feminism. I want to give this book to every fifteen-year-old I know, including my former self. You think you know your vagina: think again. Shocking, brilliant, important. A fine addition to the feminist canon.I feel very glad this book is going to be in the world. Joint pain, weight gain, migraines, acne, sleepless nights, loss of libido — all of these and more can be caused by hormone imbalances. Our health is impacted by our hormones all the way through our lives. So why do we often assume they’re mainly ‘a menopause thing’, and wait until hot flushes arrive before we take them seriously? The truth is that many women find that their hormone-related symptoms aren’t acknowledged, despite the impact they can have, years before menopause hits, on almost every aspect of their lives. With advances in medical science, however, effective new treatment options are available, including modern hormone replacement therapy (HRT), diet, and exercise. So why don’t more of us know that help is at hand? Why are we still being told that we have to put up with these conditions? Our Hormones, Our Health is written by two doctors who draw on their experience as practitioners, and as women. With the aid of pioneering research from epigenetics, stress medicine, nutritional medicine, and modern HRT, they show us how women can live with health and happiness — no matter what their age.Trade Review‘A life-changing new book.’ * Daily Mail *

Book SynopsisWith an overview of the history of women in sport, by Sport Historian Professor Jean Williams, this book celebrates our female sports pioneers and legends as well as featuring insightful interviews with over 25 women in sport today. Full colour illustrated hardback.Trade Review"A lovely tribute to so many incredible women in sport. A great and inspiring read."--Alison Kirvan, sports writer and editor "Author"; 'Beginning with a fascinating overview of the history of women in sport, Gemma Lumsdaine's 50 Women in Sport is a timely reference book. It catalogues the rise of women's sport, featuring many famous sportswomen including Paralympians across a diverse range of sports. It contains profiles of twenty-five women, notably the recently retired Serena Williams and our very own Cathy Freeman. It is accompanied by many colourful photographs and interesting information about various female champions. It captures the remarkable legacy of multiple women in sports from many nationalities and has a handy Index, making it a fine resource that will inspire all readers and sports fans alike. The interviews of women athletes like Meg Lanning are insightful and make this a four and a half star read rating. My thanks to Supernova Books and the author, for an uncorrected advanced reader copy for review purposes. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own and freely given.' -**** Michael B, reviewer NetGalley; '50 Women in Sport far exceeded what I was expecting. A few biographical sketches, some nice photographs, maybe a nice mix of sports and eras. Well, I got all that and more. This offers a wonderful short history of women in sport, highlighting the pioneers that many haven't heard of as well as the more contemporary stars we have. Then we get some excellent historical photographs and the biographical sketches tell not just about the woman's life and career but places her in her historical period, obstacles that faced all athletes plus the ones only women faced. The interviews with contemporary figures were wonderful. One major contrast with the stars of the past and our current ones is who gets to frame their stories. While this book is an excellent example of recovering the lives of the past athletes, today's athletes have more opportunity to tell their own stories, to highlight the positives and negatives of being a female athlete in this world. So the interviews were a very welcome format. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in women's sports, from the history to the current range of sports. This would be especially wonderful for young budding female athletes, as both empowerment and knowing the shoulders upon which they stand.' - ***** Jack M, Reviewer Netgalley; 'GIRLS RUN THE WORLD!!!! I love this book!!! I loved reading about these amazing women & their accomplishments in sports and life.' -***** Lashanda C, Reviewer Netgalley; "I was enlightened by the book and some of the women's achievements and stories were incredible. I loved the fact I can pick it up and come back to it as each story is short.
