Taylor & Francis Ltd Research Methods for Public Administrators
Book SynopsisAs in previous editions, this highly practical book is written with beginning MPA students and practitioners in mind. It focuses on the interpretation and use of research findings, not just number crunching. It covers the entire research process, from initial questions to final report, in clear, jargon-free language, and includes numerous easy-to-understand examples and exercises that provide opportunities for concrete applications of the concepts. It is solidly grounded in public administration and recognizes both the promise and limitations of research within a political environment.Key features of the book:--It is highly practical and written to accommodate a mix of readers: those who want to become analysts, managers who will oversee research contracts, and citizens who need to know whether to believe the facts and data they read in today's news;--It minimizes the use of jargon and explains difficult concepts in clear language. Plentiful end-of-chapter exercises provide opportunities for concrete application of the concepts;--Key points are highlighted as takeaway lessons so readers are reminded about what really matters. The tough questions to ask are suggested in every chapter;--Examples and applications are used throughout the book to illustrate concepts and add topical interest;--It covers the entire research process, from initial questions to the final report. This book demystifies and makes practical the research every public administrator and policy analyst needs to do the job well. Online instructor's materials, including a Test Bank, PowerPoint slides, and a Survey and Documental Analysis (SDA) guide, are also available to adopters.Trade Review"Research Methods for Public Administrators is presented in a clear and comprehensible fashion which enhances the ability of even those with limited knowledge of research methods to understand the topic. The book is well structured, covers the topic with a minimum of jargon, and is designed to develop the critical thinking skills of students. Many examples of research concepts that are relevant to public administrators make the book extremely useful for students and practitioners alike." -- William Leavitt, Old Dominion University"Research Methods for Public Administrators is extremely remarkable as it treats both qualitative and quantitative research methods in a comprehensive manner without compromising clarity and readability. The rare combination of broad coverage and reader-friendliness really makes this book an excellent resource for students learning basic research tools." -- Chih-Wei Hsieh, University of New Mexico"Finally we have an approachable methods book. Gail Johnson's practitioner background helps her to discuss a very complex topic, research methods, in an understandable and practical manner. While covering the basics of research design and statistics, she also gives attention to the important topic of communicating research findings. Additionally, Johnson ties research methods to its uses in the public sector. This book is well suited for a variety of public administration programs, but it is particularly useful for those with many in-service students." -- Jami Taylor, University of Toledo"This is the consummate methods survey text for public administration and policy study, somehow improved in the new edition over already superlative previous ones. In the new edition, conceptual frames continue to be covered with even greater nuance and depth--topics such as policy and program complexity, complex causation, logic modeling, the inter-relation of normative and descriptive/empirical questions in public sector research, research ethics, and the refinement of research questions in these contexts, for instance translating research questions into hypotheses. Most highly recommended!" -- Mario Rivera, University of New Mexico"This textbook offers a comprehensive yet understandable overview of the process of research and its use in the field of public administration. The author's focus on how to use and interpret research findings is a welcome addition to the topic and the real-world exercises provide students with practical application of research skills essential for public managers. A great textbook for MPA students!" -- Pamela T. Dunning, Troy UniversityTable of ContentsList of IllustrationsPreface and Acknowledgments1. SAGE Publications, Inc Multivariate Analysis of Categorical Data
Book SynopsisA bonus is the insightful introduction by series editor Jan de Leeuw, putting applied statistics into perspective, blurring the somewhat artificial distinction between exploratory and confirmatory analysis. . . . Throughout the volume, strong attention is paid to the practical issues and to limitations of the analytical approaches (e.g., the effects of the number of categories within a variable on the resulting model). This seems especially useful, given that the intended audience includes 'nitty-gritty' users and less theoretically inclined readers. John P. Van de Geer is careful to head off the reader's temptation to base interpretation on the old 'the computer says it, so it must be right' routine, by pointing out easy but faulty conclusions, such as those that might result from interactions and confounding factors. --Elizabeth L. Rose in Structural Equation Modeling Quote for both books The set would be appropriate for use in a graduate course, with guidance from an instructor Trade Review"This set would be appropriate for use in a graduate course, with guidance from an instructor who has expertise in this approach to multivariate analysis. The interested researcher will find the set to be very helpful, particularly in terms of developing a coherent and accurate interpretation of the results." -- Elizabeth L. Cambridge University Press Crime Insecurity and Community Policing
Book SynopsisHow can societies effectively reduce crime without exacerbating adversarial relationships between the police and citizens? In recent decades, perhaps the most celebrated innovation in police reform has been the introduction of community policing, where citizens are involved in building channels of dialogue and improving police-citizen collaboration. Despite the widespread adoption of community policing in the United States and increasingly in the developing world, there is still limited credible evidence about whether it realistically increases trust in the police or reduces crime. Through simultaneously coordinated field experiments in a diversity of political contexts, this book presents the outcome of a major research initiative into the efficacy of community policing. Scholars from around the world uncover whether, and under what conditions, this highly influential strategy for tackling crime and insecurity is effective. With its highly innovative approach to cumulative learning, this project represents a new frontier in the study of police reform.

Cambridge University Press The House that Fox News Built
Book SynopsisThe influence of partisan news is presumed to be powerful, but evidence for its effects on political elites is limited, often based more on anecdotes than science. Using a rigorous quasi-experimental research design, observational data, and open science practices, this book carefully demonstrates how the re-emergence and rise of partisan cable news in the US affected the behavior of political elites during the rise and proliferation of Fox News across media markets between 1996 and 2010. Despite widespread concerns over the ills of partisan news, evidence provides a nuanced, albeit cautionary tale. On one hand, findings suggest that the rise of Fox indeed changed elite political behavior in recent decades. At the same time, the limited conditions under which Fox News'' influence occurred suggests that concerns about the network''s power may be overstated.

Cambridge University Press Shared Leadership 2.0
Book SynopsisShared leadership entails a dynamic, interactive influence process among groups and teams. Whereas traditional models of leadership emphasize the importance of vertical leadership as a role occupied by an individual in a designated position, shared leadership emphasizes the importance of leadership as an unfolding social process, shifting the influence to the person with the most relevant knowledge, skills and abilities, juxtaposed against the emerging task related requirements. Research shows that shared leadership is a robust predictor of group, team and organizational outcomes across a variety of organizations, industries and cultural contexts. In fact, shared leadership is a better predictor of outcomes than vertical leadership. This Element provides a comprehensive review of the research on shared leadership, and points to promising directions for the future, in terms of both research and the practical application of shared leadership in action. Taylor & Francis Strategic Performance Management
Book SynopsisEffective performance management is core to successful organizations. The new edition continues to look at performance management as an interdisciplinary field of study and practice and draws upon a wide set of business disciplines, including strategic management, organizational behaviour, organizational theory, and management accounting. The book provides a contemporary examination of theories, issues, and practices related to performance management with an original performance management framework, grounded in concrete organizational phenomena, therefore making it more accessible and meaningful to practitioners, scholars, and students. The updated edition also examines organizationsâ evolving use of digital business transformation and the effect on performance management design. With updated cases, the latest edition will help readers to gain insights into the fields of strategic management, organizational behaviour, organizational theory, and management accounting andTrade Review"An important aspect of corporate culture is a strong performance culture that recognises and rewards the right behaviour beyond achieving short-term financial goals. This must be underpinned by an effective performance measurement system. The focus on ESG and digitalisation of businesses also challenge the performance management systems of many companies. The new edition of Ralph W. Adler’s book provides a useful framework for approaching the design of a performance measurement system and is a timely reminder of the importance of an effective performance measurement system for a high-performing and ethical organisation."Mak Yuen Teen, PhD, FCPA (Aus), Professor (Practice) of Accounting, National University of Singapore"I love when a book not only contains all the relevant information but is written in a way that can be understood by many, not just elite academics. This is one such book. From what I have read, I would recommend this book for those studying, teaching, or working in the area of management accounting – with an emphasis on performance management. By critiquing and comparing respective early frameworks and providing a clear history of performance management, Adler has cleverly derived a new and original performance management framework. This conceptual model then informs the remainder of the new edition with the addition of ethical behaviours and digital business transformation. Providing detailed knowledge of prior research is essential to informing these new and improved ways of organizational structure and ensuring the capture of 21st-century innovations."Robyn Pilcher, PhD (USyd), MCom, BBus, FCPA, FIPA, CMA , Adjunct Associate Professor, Curtin University, Australia"This textbook does an excellent job of condensing and presenting in a manner understandable to students the multifarious field of performance management (management control). The framework developed and used throughout the textbook captures the various elements of performance management in a manner that can be readily applied in practice."Ralph Kober, Associate Professor of Accounting, Monash University, AustraliaTable of Contents1. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Body of Knowledge
Book SynopsisThis book presents a vivid and close-up view of social science researchers engaged in fieldwork, in discussions with colleagues, and in writing. Adopting an ethnographic approach inspired by ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, the author pursues a praxeological analysis of social inquiry in situ. By conceiving of analytical practices such as observation, shop talk, and conceptualization in experiential terms, the seen but unnoticed structures of knowledge work are exposed and made available for empirical analysis. In a departure from ethnographic studies of research that focus on the physical sciences, the author uses the example of sociological research to shed new light on the role of self and mind for epistemic cultures, on the elusive materiality of conceptual objects, and on researchers' experiential ways of seizing, reviewing, and accrediting knowledge.A rich and pervasive study of elementary sites in the research process, The Body of Knowledge <Trade Review'Empirically, the book follows its actors in all potential corners of their doing and thinking, their movements and looks, their encounters with others and themselves. Notably, it is the theme of self-encounter that pervades the analysis. Time after time, observers are relating to themselves, to their actions, and their (non-)impact, their competencies and their (inchoate) knowledge. Thus, it becomes apparent that the classic definition of the "situation" is also at stake and that the interaction with oneself should be conceived as a social situation.' - Herbert Kalthoff, University of Mainz, Germany'I find this an innovative, empirically wide-ranging, and conceptually rich and developed work (…), commensurate with its broad, discipline-transcending interest and potential impact. Although all kinds of textbooks, books of advice, and essayistic renderings of various aspects of the research process exist – more in the humanities than in sociology – none display the same level of detail, observational perceptiveness, and theoretical sensitivity to the research process and its various components as this one (…). The chapter on writing in particular comes close to a conversation analysis study of the "succession" of the writing process and its many aspects, including that of generating ideas while writing and of dissociating oneself from the text and then re-appropriating it as an interaction party – as a communicative other.' - Karin Knorr Cetina, The University of Chicago, USA'…an ethnomethodological account of an oft-overlooked set of related practices common to social research. There will, undoubtedly, be readers interested in the sociality of research methods who will find this book a vital contribution.' – Phil Brooker, Symbolic InteractionTable of Contents1. Taylor & Francis Eight Domains of Phenomenology and Research
Book SynopsisEight Domains of Phenomenology and Research Methods is a unique text that explains how the foundational literature representing our lifeworld experience aligns theory with research methods.Maintaining focus on the core problem of phenomenological investigations, the author strives to bridge theory with applied research by critically reviewing examples from the applied literature. With the extensive use of the foundational literatureâs original voices, the book elaborates on how renowned scholars such as Husserl, Heidegger, and Sartre argued their ideas. A range of diverse voices is also explored through the perspectives of feminist and Black phenomenologists. The text then goes on to unpack the phenomenological methodologies with detailed explanations of signature techniques, hereunder the epochà and reduction from the perspectives of transcendental phenomenology, phenomenological psychology, and genetic (generative) phenomenology. The contributors offer insightful chapters that can help us push back against the tokenism, methodolatry, and perspective-less abstractions of mainstream qualitative research. I felt inspired as I read on and connected with the promise of soulful research that sees the intrapsychic alongside the interpersonal, sociocultural, and political. I can’t wait to share this book with my students (undergraduate and doctorate alike) who are thirsty for scholarship that honours depth and brings psychotherapy practice closer to their research endeavours" -- Dr Miltiades Hadjiosif, Senior Lecturer in Counselling Psychology, University of the West of England, USA"Bringing together an impressive field of international authors, this book invites readers into the nexus between qualitative research and psychotherapy practice. It is an ‘essential text’ for the resource list of any psychological therapy training programme. It introduces us to the lexicon of research theory and practice. The book traverses a wide range of methodologies, and this is revealed through both content and styles of writing. Expertise comes from northern and southern hemispheres, and from indigenous, feminist, queer, and critical voices.
