Book SynopsisIslam can be called a 'narrative community': in which stories are told about how people deal with one another and with God; what norms and values they have in their life that can give them guidance in any age and in any new environment; how they can cope with their life and death; and how faith, morality, rules of behaviour can be handed on to the following generation. Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all three narrative communities. It is good if they all learn to tell one another stories in order to contribute to mutual understanding. This book begins with 'Negative Stories' since many people in the West primarily think about stories of fanaticism, intolerance and terror. Then the stories around Muhammad's call to prophethood are discussed as well as stories from the Qur'an (in comparison with Biblical one's). Besides the 'external' way of the law Muslims follow the mystical path dealt with in 'Mystical Stories'. How Muslims relate to Jews and Christians is discussed in the story of a Father who had two sons: Abraham (Ibrahim) and his two sons Ishmael and Isaac. The Jesus of the Muslims is presented in the different stories regarding his life and ministry. In 'Islam in the diaspora' Muslim novelists living in Europe tell about the Muslim identity between different cultures. The book concludes with the story of the common pilgrimage of human kind symbolised in the story of the mysterious 'Green man'.

Book Synopsis"Zwischen Altertumswissenschaft und Theologie - Zur Relevanz der Patristik in Geschichte und Gegenwart" lautete das Thema der Tagung der "Patristischen Arbeitsgemeinschaft" in Eisenach und Erfurt im Januar 2001. Die Vortrage und die Statements einer abschliesenden Podiumsdiskussion werden hier in ausgearbeiteter Form dokumentiert. Das Programm der Tagung setzte erstens die Uberzeugung voraus, das von der gegenwartigen Bedeutung eines Forschungszweiges nur geredet werden kann, wenn dessen spezifische Geschichte bekannt ist. Da in den letzten Jahren eine ganze Reihe von Tagungen zur Geschichte der Wissenschaft vom antiken Christentum und zur Kirchenvaterkunde (Patristik) stattgefunden haben, versucht der Band, Forschungslucken im Bereich des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts zu schliesen - freilich ohne dabei Vollstandigkeit zu beanspruchen. Book SynopsisIn the course of his long and distinguished scholarly career, Jan Lambrecht has been a prolific writer from both an academic and a pastoral perspective. Since 1994, attempts have been in process to collect as many as possible of his shorter writings into volumes that would be more accessible, resulting in four publications up to this point.In 1994, many of Professor Lambrecht's writings on Paul appeared in "Pauline Studies" (BETL, 115) and, together with some from his former student, Reimund Bieringer, in "Studies on 2 Corinthians" (BETL, 112). In 2001, upon completion of his teaching at the Biblicum, he was honored with a volume of "Collected Studies" (AnBibl, 147) representing his then more recent works. This volume, as its full title indicates, consists for the most part of studies on Pauline literature and the Book of Revelation, but it also includes a short article on Christian freedom in 1 Peter.In 2002, a collection of articles in Dutch, some that had appeared previously and some new, was published as "De kracht van het geloof" ("The Power of Belief"). Nonetheless, there remain some of his works that have not yet been brought into a collection, and important articles in the recent Dutch collection are not available to a wider audience. This present offering attempts to address that situation.Although the twenty-two studies in the present volume have all been written or published relatively recently, they are reflective of Professor Lambrecht's academic and pastoral interests over his entire career, ranging from Mark's use of Matthew, and possibly Q, to the Book of Revelation, and including Luke, Acts, and Paul.Some of the writing is less technical because of the audience for which it was intended. Thus within this volume there will be some writings that will challenge scholars to rethink some positions and others addressed to a more general audience. Book SynopsisEver since Adolf Harnack Paul's ministry is interpreted as that of a Jewish missionary who happened to preach a new gospel. But what if Harnack was wrong and there were no Jewish missionaries? How should we then account for Paul's actions? The first chapter of this book describes the Jewish context in which Paul lived, and the second chapter deals with the pagan context. The question asked is: was there any such thing as proselytising mission before Christianity? In chapter three the pre-pauline Christ-movement is treated. These three chapters describe the stage that Paul came to act upon. The fourth and fifth chapter discuss Paul himself: first the great transformation he experienced is dealt with (ch. 4), next Paul's view of his task in regard to the gentiles is discussed (ch. 5). The final chapter gives an analysis of Paul's missionary strategy and its theological focus. The conclusion is that Paul did not bring a new message within an existing mission (Harnack), but that the unique character of his ministry itself developed the concept of a proselytising mission.

Book SynopsisLes «Actes de Mar Mari», récit de fondation du christianisme dans l'empire iranien, ont été rédigés vers la fin de l'époque sassanide (VIIe siècle). Ils racontent en trente-quatre séquences l'apostolat du compagnon d'Addaï, l'apôtre d'Edesse, du nom de Mari, à travers la Mésopotamie du Sud, la Babylonie, la Susiane et jusqu'en Perse. Le texte s'achève par une célébration commémorative sur le tombeau de l'apôtre. Son auteur était probablement moine au couvent de Dorqonie, où étaient conservées les reliques du saint. Le principal manuscrit contenant les «Actes», base commune des rares éditions du texte, se trouvait dans un monastère du village d'Alqosh, au nord de la plaine de Mossoul. Cette édition critique, établie à partir des manuscrits disponibles, recense par ailleurs la documentation liturgique et littéraire concernant les «Actes» et le personnage de Mar Mari, dont le nom a été associé à une liturgie syro-orientale depuis fort longtemps.

De vereniging met God is dan ook geen geestverheffing die de mens onttrekt aan het mens-zijn. Het echte een-zijn bestaat, integendeel, in het samenspel van "rusten" in God en "werken in deze wereld", van "God met God zijn" en "mens met de Mens" (Jezus). Es ist wichtig, musikalische und liturgische Erscheinungsbilder der byzantinischen und slavischen Spatzeit nicht losgelost von der fruhen Tradition zu untersuchen, sondern die Wurzeln ihrer Entstehung stets im Auge zu behalten. Hierin stellt die Entwicklung der verschiedenen Notationssysteme die Basis fur jede weitere Untersuchung dar. In der liturgischen Musik der Hagia Sophia von Konstantinopel entstanden bereits im 8.-10. Jahrhundert melismatische Gesange, wahrend im monastischen Ritus einfache Melodien vorherrschten. Die Verschmelzung von Kathedral- und monastischer Tradition schuf eine neue Basis fur die Entstehung einer hochmelismatischen Gesangform, der Kalophonie. Basierend auf der byzantinischen Gesangtradition sind auch im slavischen Raum bereits ab dem 11. Jahrhundert melismatische Gesange uberliefert, die auf die ornamentierten Melodien der russischen Kirchenmusik des 15.-17. Jahrhunderts Einfluss hatten. Ein bedeutender Aspekt ist die Berucksichtigung der oralen Tradition, die durch alle Zeiten ein tragendes Element in der Uberlieferung der Gesange war.

Das Entdecken eines solchen Schatzes ist besonders aufregend, wenn es sich, wie hier, um einen Text handelt, der Licht in das Dunkel der Anfange des Christentums, speziell im agyptischen Alexandria, zu bringen vermag. Die zahlreichen Fragmente eines einst umfangreichen sahidischen Papyruscodex aus dem 4. Jahrhundert, seit fast einem Jahrhundert im Besitz der Papyrussammlung des Agyptischen Museums von Berlin, waren so vielversprechend, dass sich der muhevolle Versuch einer Restaurierung des Textes zu lohnen schien. Verfasser, Herkunft und Entstehungszeit der griechischen Vorlage sind unbekannt. Gleichwohl weisen insbesondere das neutrale Argumentieren mit abweichenden Meinungen sowie Auswahl und Haufigkeit von Schriftzitaten und die Benutzung von fruhchristlichen, spater nicht kanonisierten Texten, die ebenfalls als autoritative Schriftbeweise verwendet werden, eindeutig nach Alexandria und lassen vermuten, dass die nun rekonstruierte theologisch-philosophische Abhandlung aus einer Zeit noch vor Clemens Alexandrinus stammt. Dessen Lehrer und stoisch beeinflusster Vorganger als Leiter der alexandrinischen Katechetenschule, Pantainos, wurde als Autor durchaus in das Profil der hier vorliegenden Gedankenwelt passen.

Die Greimas-Semiotik, die ursprunglich im linguistischen Bereich beheimatet war, bietet ein homogenes Instrumentarium, womit auch nicht literarische Objekte adaquat untersucht werden konnen. Am Vollzug von liturgischen Gesangen wird das Instrumentarium dieser Semiotik exemplarisch erprobt und adaptiert. It is this lacuna that this book tries to fill by providing the student as well as scholars working in the field of the Avesta, indexes, hapax legomena as well as frequency counts. These, it is hoped, will be of certain utility by not only reducing the amount of time looking up for a particular word and its recensions, but by also allowing researchers to break new ground in Avestan studies with the help of the distributional analyses provided. The data, based on the Geldnerian version of the Avesta, has been generated by computer and has subsequently been validated and verified manually.

Sans nier une histoire redactionnelle probablement embrouillee, la presente etude cherche d'abord a mettre en lumiere l'art d'ecrire du redacteur final et partant, la forme artistique de ce texte. Mais l'art litteraire de la Bible n'est jamais vain: la stucture d'un texte ne se devoile pas independamment du message que celui-ci transmet. En l'occurrence, pour le Levitique, la forme de la loi, la disposition de sa lettre en livre aussi l'esprit; l'esthetique fait vivre et sert ici un projet theologique et ethique puissant et global qui associe deliberement le precepte et la grace, l'exigence et la misericorde.
