Peeters Publishers La Chaine sur L'Exode. I. Fragments de Severe

Peeters Publishers Liturgical Music as Ritual Symbol: A Case Study
Book SynopsisIn this book, Sister Kubicki uses Jacques Berthier's Taize music to explore the nature of liturgical music as ritual symbol. She carries out a hermeneutical analysis of Berthier's chants and examines biographical and historical data related to the creator's of Taize music and the founding of the Taize community. The author draws on five areas of study to interpret the Taize chants as ritual symbol - symbol theory, semiotics, theologies of symbol, ritual theory, and perfomative language theory. The final chapter explores potential ecclesial meanings which may be mediated in the Taize liturgy and the role of Berthier's chants in mediating that meaning. The study concludes that it is music's symbolic property that enables it to be both ministerial and integral to the liturgy. As symbolic activity, music-making evokes participation, negotiates relationships, and enables the assembly to orient themselves and to find their identity and place within their world. Furthermore, music-making provides the illocutionary force to "do something" in the act of singing. Thus it is that as part of a complexus of ritual symbols, music interacts with other symbols, in mediating the liturgy's meaning.

Peeters Publishers Lectures Et Relectures De La Bible: Festschrift
Wevers, R. Hanart, J.-Cl. Haelewyck, M. Gilbert, M. Harl, A. Wenin), les ecrits inter- et neo-testamentaires (E. Tov, J.-M. van Cangh, C. Peeters Publishers From Quest to Q: Festschrift James M. Robinson
Book SynopsisOn June 30th 1999, James M. Robinson formally retired from his position as Arthur Letts Jr. Professor of Religion at Claremont Graduate University. At this juncture in his life Peeters Publishers is proud to be the publisher of a festschrift, From Quest to Q, dedicated to Robinson, and his monumental contributions to the field of Q studies or the Sayings Gospel Q. The Festschrift is divided into four sections following an introduction written by Asgeirsson. The first section of the Festschrift entitled "From Source to Document" opens with a tribute to the jubilee whose very work within the International Q Project has, indeed transformed the hypothetical source into a document using a papyrological model. It is followed by two essays: one on the genre of the document Q and the other on the impact of Old Testament citations or allusions in Q or more specifically the Temptation Story in Q. The second section on "Founder and Fashion" visits in three essays the questions of the character of Jesus. Whom may he be likened to, what factors in the social environment of the followers of Jesus colored his manners and view of life? In a third section "Topos and Topics", four essays deal with diverse theological motifs in Q. From the breaking up of traditional family relationships to the question of the poor, this section also includes the motif of Son of man and the geographical topos, Nazara. The last section, "Q in Redaction" deals with several aspects of the redaction of Q in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Finally, in this section, two essays deal with parallel motifs in Q, the Gospel of Thomas, the Synoptic Gospels, as well as the Gospel of John. The contributors, from Europe and the United States, have all worked within the field of Q Studies and together comprise some of the most prominent names among junior and senior scholars in the field.

Peeters Publishers East and West in the Crusader States. Context -
Book SynopsisThe meeting of East and West in the Crusader States was the theme of a symposium held at Hernen Castle in 1997. It was the continuation of a similar symposium which has been published in the Orientalia Lovaniensia Analecta 75. Various communities (Arabs, Armenians, Ethiopians, Greeks, Syrians and Latins) and various religions (the Church of Rome, the Orthodox Church of Constantinople, the Jacobites, the Muslims and others) play their part in the various Crusader States, sometimes in the effort to ecumenism, sometimes in the form of confrontations. Coins and seals in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem betray Eastern and Western influences. Daily life is reflected in historical texts, and in exempla and miracula. The fall of Edessa is described in the Lament of Edessa by Nerses Snorhali, which is here for the first time translated into English. Even icon-painting in Egypt reflects crusader influence.

Peeters Publishers Light Shining Through Veil: On Saint Clare's
Book SynopsisThe spirituality of Saint Clare of Assisi, the soul mate of Saint Francis, is the object of this book. Her spirituality was inspired by Francis' and she owes much to him, like he to her. This book is meant to be a contribution to the study of Clare and her thoughts. In her four letters, written to Saint Agnes of Prague, Clare expresses herself more openly about her deepest motivations than in any other writing. They concentrate on the heart of her choice of life and as such they reproduce the most beautiful gift which God gave her. Clare's sprituality as it comes to the fore in these leters, can only then be fully understood when we take into account their creative structure. The specific aim of this books is to do justice to her texts in a method which, to our knowledge, was never applied before. It consists in an elaborated analysis of the fine, concentric structure of the letters to Agnes, combined with an ongoing commentary in which historical data are also given attention.

Peeters Publishers The Future of Deuteronomistic History
Book SynopsisThe present debate on the so-called "Deuteronomistic History" has become quite confusing and in recent years more and more scholars are inclined to deny the existence of a Deuteronomistic History as elaborated by Martin Noth or at least to modify this thesis radically. The contributions in this volume reflect the present state of discussion about the Deuteronomistic History. With one exception they have all been presented and discussed in three special sessions dedicated to "Deuteronomism" during the SBL International Meeting in Lausanne (July 1997). Three topics were treated: "The Future of the Deuteronomistic History", "Identity and Literary Strategies of the Deuteronomists", "Deuteronomism and the Hebrew Bible". The contributors are: R. Albertz, A.G. Auld, M. Bauks, W. Dietrich, D. Edelman, F. Garcia Lopez, E.A. Knauf, G. Knoppers, S.K. McKenzie, C. Nihan, T.C. Romer, N.H. Rosel, J. Van Seters and J. Vermeylen. Each contribution offers a valuable entry into one of the most important discussions of Old Testament scholarship at the end of the twentieth century.

Peeters Publishers Hartslag Van De Kerk: De Parochie Vanuit

Book SynopsisPapers presented at the Thirteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 1999 (see also Studia Patristica 35, 36, 37 and 38). The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. Each set is provided with an index, an invaluable index of references to the individual Fathers and each of their works. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

Peeters Publishers The Apocalypse of Isaiah Metaphorically Speaking:
Book SynopsisThe analysis of metaphors constitutes an ideal point of entry into the exegesis of Biblical Hebrew poetic texts because it forces the exegete to examine the said text from a variety of perspectives. How can one discern the presence of metaphorical speech? What are the various types of metaphorical speech available to and employed by the biblical poet? How does the structure of a piece of Hebrew poetry carry its metaphorical dimensions? How did the biblical poet make use of the various types of metaphor and to what end? Can we ultimately gain access to the poet's meaning? The present study endeavours to provide at least a partial answer to these questions. In maintaining focus on the biblical text, moreover, the author hopes to anchor some of the abstractions of metaphorical theory with chosen examples taken from the so-called 'Apocalypse of Isaiah'. The Hebrew prophets constitute fertile ground in their use of metaphorical language for speaking the unspeakable, especially concerning the relationship between the people and God.

Peeters Publishers La Chaine Sur L'Exode. Edition Integrale II.
Book SynopsisThe original composition of the Catena on Exodus was expanded twice in the course of time. The most recent addition is a series of quotations from Severus of Antioch, which was recently published in a separate volume (TEG 9). The other was inserted into one branch of the Catena tradition only (the so-called secondary tradition) and consists of a collection built up around the Quaestiones of Theodoret of Cyrrhus. Named after the manuscript in which it first came to light, the Collectio Coisliniana contains twenty-six texts, most of them attributed to Diodore of Tarsus. In the primary tradition, only the first half of the Book of Exodus (up to and including the Canticle of Moses) of the original Catena is preserved. This text is published here along with the parallel (and previously unpublished) passages in the 'Commentary' of Procopius of Gaza. The remaining part of the Catena, known only in the secondary tradition, will be published in the third and final volume.

Book SynopsisFrom the people's demand for a king (1 Sam 8) to the rise of Solomon (1 Kings 1-2), the history of early Israeli monarchy is rich and complex. This text has long been considered a writing of exceptional literary quality, that expresses both the ideals and ambiguities of power. The present study concentrates on the redactional history of the text. In a first part, it follows the story pericope by pericope to try and disentangle his various threads, in a patient dialogue with current research. In the second part, the text's literary history is rebuilt from the most ancient writings, as early as David's and Solomon's reign, to the present narrative. This study allows to throw new light on the historical David and his time, but also on the composition of the Pentateuch. The book is written in French.

Peeters Publishers Newman and the Word: Proceedings of the Second
Book SynopsisThe 'Word' was at the heart of John Henry Newman's endeavors as a preacher and writer, and the 'Word made flesh' was the primary object of his faith as a Christian. In this collection of essays, theologians, philosophers, historians and literary scholars reflect on Newman's engagement with the 'Word' and relate his thought to contemporary developments in their disciplines. The topics discussed include Newman's understanding of the nature of faith and the church, his standing as an ecumenist and a philosopher, and the significance of his literary and theological work in relation to postmodernism. This collection constitues a thoroughgoing and critical analysis of Newman's reputation as a master of the 'Word', both written and proclaimed, and of his status as a thinker of contemporary significance.

Peeters Publishers Studies in the Book of Genesis: Literature,
Peeters Publishers Ishodad of Merw's Exegesis of the Psalms 119 and
Book SynopsisIshodad of Merw (9th century), like other East Syrian exegetes, understands himself as an heir of Theodore of Mopsuestia's (died 428) approach to biblical interpretation. The study examines this claim in one of the rare cases where the Syriac translation of Theodore's commentary (on Ps 119 and 139-147) is extant. Ishodad emerges as a competent representative of his scholastic tradition working creatively with his scientific tools. Ishodad's commentary shows traces of Theodore's in less than a third of the verses explained. This reflects the development of medieval academic exegesis and the changed expectations towards biblical interpretation and its presentation. In its highly abbreviated style, Ishodad's commentary shows that it was written for a learned audience for whom one could reduce one's explanations to their essential parts. The study of Ishodad's commentary provides a glimpse into East-Syrian scholarship in Abbasid Mesopotamia as mediating between different exegetical traditions and biblical translations.

Peeters Publishers Implicit Religion in Contemporary Society
Book SynopsisThe book reports three studies that were undertaken of what "moves" people - firstly as individuals, through verbal interviews; secondly in a public house, through working behind the bar; and thirdly in a residential community, through being the Rector of a parish. In each case it poses the question, whether our understanding of the human reality revealed in the situation, can be progressed by comparing it with what is known about religion. In other words, can Religious Studies help us to understand secular life, in the way that Social-scientific Studies have helped us to understand the religious life? The Implicit Religion that is looked for in the three studies is defined in terms of people's commitments or integrating foci, or intensive concerns with extensive effects. The first study revealed an all-but-ineffable apprehension and valuation of the Self. The second revealed a context in which Selves can "hold their own" with other Selves. The third unexpectedly revealed a commitment, which was as ultimate as it was intimate, to what was called "Christianity". The content of this belief is analysed, and compared with historical forms of Christianity. This attention to intentionality may be seen as the particular contribution that the study of Religion, and of Religions (as type-cases), can make to the social-scientific understanding of human behaviour and human being. In the three decades that have passed since Dr. Bailey began to test this approach, much "post-modernity" theory has moved in a similar direction. This volume constitutes the firts full-lenght report, of the first systematic tests to have been made, of a concept that has come to be accepeted in both academic and religious circles.

Peeters Publishers The Wisdom Texts from Qumran and the Development
Book SynopsisThis volume comprises the lectures delivered at a conference on the sapiential texts from Qumran hosted by A. Lange and H. Lichtenberger in Tubingen (1998) as well as a number of additional contributions. This literature, although found in the Qumran library, is mostly of non-Essene origin and can be dated to the third and second century BCE with a single exception which might be even older. The sapiential texts from Qumran add to the sparse corpus of postexilic sapiential literature and shed new light on the later Israelite and Jewish wisdom as well as on the sources from which early Christian wisdom traditions originated. Therefore, the volume attempts to understand the wisdom literature from Qumran in the broader context of sapiential thought in the Ancient near East, the Hebrew Bible, Ancient Judaism and the New Testament. Beyond this, the volume further includes treatments of introductory and linguistic questions as well as articles on specific sapiential texts.

Book SynopsisThis volume includes about thirty contributions to the 49th Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense, held in July 2000 in Leuven. The authors represent the contemporary state of the scholarly discussion in Europe and North America on the sayings source Q, in connection to actual problems of the quest of the historical Jesus. The contributions show different positions on the historical and exegetical problems though almost all of them are accepting the Q-hypothesis. Some of the articles are devoted to the text and theology of the Q-source (or Q-gospel) as a whole, others deal with more special questions of the language, or the historical background or context, or the situation of the Q-community. Some of the contributions give interpretations of important particular text-passages, including parables and miracle-stories. The volume gives a good overview of the progress of the discussion and research on Q since the Leuven colloquium in 1981.

Peeters Publishers Israel of Alqosh and Joseph of Telkepe. A Story
Book SynopsisEast-Syrian Christians of Iraqi Kurdistan managed to develop a written literary tradition in Neo-Aramaic, transmitted in manuscripts from the 16th century onwards. A selection of the earliest dated religious poems is now published in a critical edition, with English translation and full concordances to the texts. In the introduction, the salient linguistic and stylistic features of the corpus are placed in their historical context and studied in socio-linguistic, text-critical, literary and anthropological perspectives. The poems are presented as exploring new methods of dealing with the Classical Syriac heritage. Their literary value can only be appreciated as reflecting the aesthetics of a poetic tradition, which is strongly influenced by its oral-aural background. With the work of early vernacular poets as Israel of Alqosh and Joseph of Telkepe, the vernacular language enters the space of liturgical poetry, bringing with it manners and techniques of the folk literary tradition. The multicultural milieu of Iraqi Kurdistan has a certain impact on the transformation of the late East-Syriac literary tradition. Words, motifs and myths, which are shared with the surrounding religious communities - especially Jews and Muslims - are either positively incorporated into Christian poetry or polemically used against those communities.

Peeters Publishers The Armenian Commentaries on Exodus-deuteronomy
Book SynopsisIn the various early Christian traditions of the life of Ephrem the Syrian, he was widely known even more for his biblical commentaries than his poetry, for which he is now so highly regarded. Only three commentaries have survived in his native Syriac, and only the Commentary on Genesis survives in a complete version. A large corpus of commentaries has survived in Armenian and all these were long considered to be genuine. A study of the Armenian Commentary on Genesis has demonstrated that at least the Old Testament commentaries were influenced by Syriac traditions based on the exegesis of Jacob of Edessa (d. 708). Thus, these commentaries rather reflect a medieval Armenian exegesis strongly influenced by Syriac traditions. The present work offers a new edition of the text of the Armenian commentaries on Exodus-Deuteronomy attributed to Ephrem the Syrian, with their first ever translation into any modern language. These volumes constitute the second of three installments of the Old Testament commentaries attributed to Ephrem the Syrian. These commentaries should be of interest to anyone interested in the history of biblical interpretation, and to those interested in the history of Syrian-Armenian ecclesiastical relations.

Peeters Publishers Rituals of Birth, Circumcision, Marriage, and
Book SynopsisMigration imposes special pressures on the meaning, experience and organization of lifecycle rituals. These pressures are felt most strongly by Muslim migrants to Western Europe. In this innovative study, Nathal M. Dessing examines the effects of migration on the lifecycle rituals of Moroccan, Turkish and Surinamese Muslims in the Netherlands. She explores how Islamic rituals marking birth, circumcision, marriage, and death have responded and accommodated to the Dutch legal and social context. After clearly setting out the relevant Islamic legal prescriptions, Dessing draws on extensive fieldwork to chart how each ritual has evolved through migration, and compares the ritual practice in the Netherlands and the countries of origin. Dessing thus sheds valuable new light on the religious and cultural identities of Muslims in the Netherlands.

Peeters Publishers Legal Position of Churches and Church Autonomy
Book SynopsisThis book includes all papers presented at the colloquium on Church and State on 28 February and 1-2 March 2001. The colloquium, focusing on the legal position of churches, the autonomy of churches in modern societies and recent tendencies in jurisprudence, was organised by the Faculty of Canon Law of the Catholic University Leuven in collaboration with the Faculty of Theology of the University of Stellenbosch. Both the conference and the book have two objectives. The fist is informing about the South African history on Church and State relationships and its current situation under the new Constitution. The second objective is to search for models leading to a new equilibrium between Church and State in South Africa. Models offered by other countries are examined as a point of reference or as a possible source of inspiration. International scholars and academics, church Ministers as well as leading politicians offer their viewpoints and enter into debate with each other.

Peeters Publishers J. Etienne.

Peeters Publishers Les Maasai Et Le Christianisme: Le Temps Du Grand

Peeters Publishers Pseudo-Athanasius on Virginity: V.
Book SynopsisThis late ancient Christian treatise, preserved in Syriac and falsely attributed to Athanasius of Alexandria (d. 373), exhorts female virgins to be "holy in body and spirit" (1 Cor. 7:34) and to abstain from "all that is in the world - the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, the pride in riches" (1 John 1:16). Drawing on themes developed in the 'de virginitate' literature of the fourth and fifth centuries, the author instructs virgins on their proper physical deportment and use of the five senses, but he incorporates into his work exhortations to purity and repentance originally addressed to a wider audience of male and female ascetics and perhaps even laity. Most likely a translation of a Greek original composed between the fifth and ninth centuries, the treatise is of interest also for its frequent and inventive use of the Bible in support of the ascetic ideal.

Peeters Publishers Contemporary Sacramental Contours of a God
Book SynopsisFrom November 3 to 6, 1999, scholars from various countries gathered in Leuven to participate in the second biannual 'Leuven Encounters in Systematic Theology' (LEST), dealing with 'Sacramental Presence in a Postmodern Context'. The volume consists of two collections of papers presented at this conference. A first part is devoted to Louis-Marie Chauvet's reconstruction of sacramentology. It includes the main lecture given by Chauvet at the Congress, together with related papers offering innovative viewpoints on Chauvet's sacramentology. The second part contains contributions from practical-theological, sacramentological and liturgical perspectives. By focusing upon the differing facets of 'sacramentality', each contribution seeks to explore the 'sacramental contours of a God incarnate' by bringing to light the vital role of 'sacramentality' in theological reflection as well as some of the aporias entailed in doing 'sacramento-theology' in the present postmodern context.

Peeters Publishers 'Mein Seel Fang an Zu Singen': Religiose

Peeters Publishers Exodus. Volume 4: Supplement
Book SynopsisThis volume is the supplement to the three volumes C. Houtman wrote on Exodus. It contains the indexes to his commentary which are designed to provide easier access to the wide range of subjects touched on than would be possible solely through consulting tables of contents. They are intended as starting points to put the user on the track of further information found in the many references in the text itself. The index of Hebrew words and phrases contains an overview of almost all the terms used in Exodus. Omitted are prepositions and some pronouns and particles. Personal and geographical names are included in the index of subjects. He also took the opportunity to make many bibliographical additions, especially of recent literature.

Peeters Publishers Intercultural Relations and Religious
Book SynopsisThe permanent presence of Islam and Muslims in the countries of the European Union implies many different forms of intercultural relations at different levels of society, as for instance, between Muslims and other religious or philosophical groups, within the framework of social and health care, in city life and within the sector of education. Furthermore, the relations between Muslim religious authorities and society at large may be seen as forms of intercultural relations. All these types of intercultural relations are influenced by the images fostered by various groups and individuals about the "Others". The chapters comprising of this volume each contribute to the elucidation of some aspects of these processes of intercultural relations. They have been grouped into four main categories: - the image-formation about Islam and Muslims and its impact on their position in the countries of the European Union, especially in the press, in schoolbooks and in local politics; - the intercultural relations between Muslims and other groups and institutions in the countries concerned, as stereotypes and prejudices can exercise a detrimental effect upon intercultural relations within many different sectors of society; - religion and education, and especially the Islamic Religious Education as well as the religiousness of Muslim and non-Muslim pupils; - the religious authorities of the Muslim communities in the countries of the European Union and their contribution to the formation of a "European Islam". In this context special attention is paid to the role Muslim religious authorities play in the discussions concerning political participation by Muslims in the West.
