Book SynopsisThe Stanzaic Poems, written by Hadewijch of Antwerp in the 13th century, are a body of 45 lyrical poems in stanzas. They are daring God-talk in the guise of courtly love songs. Hadewijch uses the linguistic style of chivalry but her poems are by no means courtly poetry. She shifts the current meaning of chivalry by transferring its context to a field of meaning focused on God. Because of the view of Minne (=love) that is embodied in them, the Stanzaic Poems are an exponent of the age old tradition of women's songs - of which the Song of Songs is the best known example - and as such they are an expression of a particular manner of keeping company with God: they celebrate a relationship of mutuality between partners equivalent in love. An introductory essay highlights some of the striking points of lovers: the raging desire of 'orewoet': the gentility of humankind's origin. This essay is followed by a rendering of the Stanzaic Poems from Middle-Dutch into Modern English prose. With an introduction by Edward Schillebeeckx.

Un double mouvement l'anime: d'un cote, un mouvement philosophique qui considere l'autonomie dans son emergence, dans son deploiement a travers le sujet moral et la realite autonome, jusq'a sa mise en question par le mal radical; de l'autre, un mouvement theologique qui reprend le concept d'autonomie dans la perspective dynamique de l'histoire du salut, a savoir: l'autonomie creee, l'autonomie blessee, et l'autonomie liberee. Ainsi il apparait comment l'autonomie peut jouer un role crucial dans la rencontre entre les reflections philosophique et theologique.

Book SynopsisThis book is the product of a relatively long history of pilgrimage research in a Dutch theological setting. It is intended as a report for an international audience on this long-running programme. Two lines are followed in the book. The first is the track of liturgical studies, in which an historical, European ethnological and anthropological approach has predominated. The second is a social science track, with specific content coming from psychology of religion. The combination of these two lines has been extremely fruitful. In addition to results of various surveys of contemporary pilgrimage practice and the expansion of research into ritual and cultural context in which modern pilgrims find themselves, special attention is also bestowed on historiographic issues involved in orienting pilgrimage research, and its theoretical and methodological aspects. The places of pilgrimage examined here are Wittem, Dokkum and Amsterdam in The Netherlands, Banneux in Belgium, Lourdes and La Salette in France, and Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The central question which informs the whole study is to what extent one can perhaps speak of a new type of pilgrim today, the "modern pilgrim".

Une des mérites du recueil de "collected essays" que Jan Grootaers vient de publier dans la Bibliotheca de la faculté de Théologie de Leuven est d'avoir tâché de structurer les chapitres de telle sorte que l'on s'efforce d'éclairer aussi bien la forêt (les "Actes" de Vatican II) que les arbres (les "Acteurs" du Concile). Après avoir cherché à présenter la diversité positive d'une immense assemblée, qui aurait pu sombrer dans son gigantisme, l'auteur analyse les "faces d'ombre" de l'événement et certains de ses échecs. Parmi les acteurs on trouvera ici pour la première fois une galerie de portraits des grandes figures de Vatican II ainsi qu'une série d'experts conciliaires qui ont oeuvré à la rédaction de textes, qui toujours devaient être "remis sur le métier". En conclusion de la préface que le professeur Etienne Fouilloux a donné à cet ouvrage, l'historien de Lyon écrit: "En se réfusant à gommer les heurts, les oppositions, les remords, les volte-face à l'occasion, Jan Grootaers sert mieux l'histoire de Vatican II, conflictuelle et consensuelle tout à la fois, que des vulgates agressivement dénonciatrices ou platement conformistes. Avec minutie, imagination et talent, il détruit certes quelques mythes, mais au bénéfice d'une vision moins légendaire et plus vraie de l'événement majeur de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle que fut le dernier concile."
