Peeters Publishers Homiletica from the Pierpont Morgan Library: T.
Book SynopsisHomiletica in the Pierpont Morgan Library is the first volume in a collaborative effort to edit and translate what has remained unpublished of the Coptic literary texts kept at the Pierpont Morgan Library in mid-town Manhattan, New York City. The showpiece of the Morgan collection is a group of some fifty parchment codices acquired in 1911 in Paris for Pierpont Morgan, the American financier and philanthropist, and discovered in 1910 on the site of an ancient monastery near present-day Hamuli in the Faiyum. The eminent Coptologist Walter Ewing Crum called them "the largest and, in some ways, the most important of extant collections, ...a body of texts unparalleled for completeness, if not for variety."

Peeters Publishers The Acts of John: Two-stage Initiation into
Book SynopsisThis study was defended as a dissertation in Groningen (1998). The first monograph in the series, it studies the Acts of John in its second-century context and sheds new light on the text, which was probably written in Asia Minor before the year 150 AD. Lalleman shows that both the Gnostic and the non-Gnostic sections of the Acts of John owe much more to the canonical books of the New Testament than has been assumed. The enigma of the Gnostic section is solved by the discovery that it forms the second stage of initiation into a Gnostic form of Christianity. Read in this way, both sections of the Acts of John turn out to be important steps on the trajectory from the Fourth Gospel to Gnosticism. Penetrating investigations of the Christology and the attitude towards asceticism in the Acts of John complete the book.

Peeters Publishers George, Bishop of the Arabs. A Homily on Blessed
Book SynopsisThe Homily on Blessed Mar Severus, Patriarch of Antioch, presents a critical edition of the Syriac text with English translation of this vita in memra form composed by George, Bishop of the Arabs (ca. 725). Both volumes are accompanied by introductions. The first describes the manuscripts, which range in date from the twelfth to the twentieth centuries, and it establishes a stemma. The text is furnished with an index of Greek cognates. The introduction to the second volume discusses the rhetorical structure, literary sources and theological themes of the homily and evaluates its ascription to George of the Arabs. The translation volume contains Biblical, literary and onomastic indices and a bibliography.

Peeters Publishers Hellenism - Judaism - Christianity: Essays on
Book SynopsisIn 1990 the author published two volumes of collected essays. The first one, Essays on the Jewish World of Early Christianity, focused on the relevance of Jewish themes and writings for the study of early Christianity; the second one, Studies on the Hellenistic Background of the New Testament, centered on pagan Hellenistic material, elucidating various aspects of the New Testament and Early Christianity. In the present volume these threads come together. In 20 essays, most of them published over the last few years, some of them new, several aspects of pagan Hellenistic and Judeo-Christian cultures are investigated in their various forms of interaction. Disparate though the copies may seem at first sight, the underlying unity is to be found in the fact that the author wrote all these essays in the framework of the Utrecht University Faculty of Theology's research project: 'The Cultural Milieu of Early Christianity'. The study of the New Testament was the starting point and remains the impetus for the research that lies behind most of all of these contributions. In the Utrecht tradition, inaugurated by W.C. van Unnik, New Testament problems are studied in their ancient context in the widest sense of the word. This inevitably leads to thorough research of both Jewish and Hellenistic cultures in the period from Alexander the Great to Justinian, in their various interactions. This is why the book has a fourfold division: (1) Hellenism and Judaism, (2) Judaism and Christianity, (3) Hellenism and Christianity, and (4) Hellenism-Judaism-Christianity. The author hopes that reading these studies will create a greater awareness of how much there is yet to be discovered in these still largely unexplored areas of the interrelationships of Graeco-Roman, Jewish and Christian cultures in antiquity. Whatever important research has already been done in this field, there is little doubt that this kind of investigations is still very much in its infancy. If these contributions, however modest, make other scholars and students enthousiastic for pursuing this line of research, the author will have attained his goal.

Peeters Publishers The Armenian Commentary on Genesis Attributed to
Book SynopsisThese volumes make available a diplomatic text and an English translation, the first ever modern translation, of the Commentary on Genesis preserved in Armenian and attributed to the fourth century poet, Ephrem the Syrian. Heretofore this text was known only from a single Venice manuscript, V873, printed by the Mekhitarist Fathers in 1836. This diplomatic edition utilizes the two other known manuscripts: another from the Venice Mekhitarist library, V352; and one from the library at Bzommar, Bza437. A lengthy introduction, the first real study of this text, demonstrates that while this Commentary is clearly based on a Syriac original, it represents a text that cannot have been written by the fourth-century Ephrem, but rather one that stems from a Syrian-Armenian milieu of around the tenth or eleventh centuries. This Commentary displays no correspondence with the surviving genuine Syriac Commentary on Genesis by Ephrem the Syrian, and makes manifest use of the work of Severus of Edessa (d. 861). This Commentary also shows marked characteristics of the translation technique well-known to have been supplied by the Armenians of the tenth to twelfth centuries.

Peeters Publishers Gregory Barhebraeus Ethicon (Memra I): T.
Book SynopsisThe first book of the Ethicon of Gregory Barhebraeus (d. 1286) contains a description of a number of ascetical practices such as the manner of saying prayers, reading spiritual books, reciting psalms, fasting, living in seclusion, pilgrimage, etc. Barhebraeus' description is partly based on Greek and Syriac authors on the spiritual life. The originality of the work, however, lies in it being influenced by Islamic authors such as Al-Ghazali and B. Sina. This influence causes Barhebraeus to pay attention to basically Islamic concepts as sama, dhikr, etc. Much attention is given to the identification of the sources. In a special appendix one finds the parallel texts of Al-Ghazali's Ilhya 'ulum aldin and the first book of Barhebraeus' Ethicon.
