Peeters Publishers A Cloud of Witnesses: The Cult of Saints in Past
Book SynopsisFrom 11 to 16 August 2003, the nineteenth international congress of the Societas Liturgica was held in Veldhoven (the Netherlands), with as its theme «A cloud of witnesses. Saints and role models in Christian liturgy». The present publication contains a collection of nineteen case studies reflecting the versatility of the congress in its variations and themes, its scope in time (from early Christian times to the present day), and the fact that many churches and religious communities as well as the Jewish tradition are represented. The collection contains a number of articles that reflect on subjects like the phenomenon of saintliness, heortology, the dimensions of time and space in ritual-liturgical practice, and saints and canonizations in the present-day Roman Catholic and Protestant church. The last section consists of contributions on saints and forms of saint's cult by a number of authors, based on their own religious communities, such as the Old Catholic Church, Anglican Church, Dissenting Free Church, Reformed Church and ecumenical movement. The editors of this collection have by way of an introduction compiled a historiographic-bibliographic overview relating to saints and their cults in various research domains, specifically within liturgical studies, also touching upon certain specific, and for this collection interesting, themes such as the position of the (cult of) saints in cultural and historical studies, Protestant traditions, and the Feminist Liturgical Movement.

Peeters Publishers Paulus Und Die Gesinnung Christi: Identitat Und

Peeters Publishers Analyse Narrative Et Bible: Deuxieme Colloque

Peeters Publishers Suffering and Salvation: The Salvific Meaning of
Book SynopsisSuffering, especially that of the innocent and those unjustly treated, is a universal experience which has perplexed and agonised humanity. This reality is especially a challenge to believers in an all powerful, good and loving God. Within the Christian tradition in particular, because of the centrality of the cross and the crucified and risen One, there has been a tradition which has hallowed suffering. In this perspective suffering "per se", whatever its origin, is mystified as a necessary prelude to salvation. Is suffering salvific? Are all experiences of suffering saving? What is God's attitude and involvement with suffering? In this work, these questions are explored through the lens of Edward Schillebeeckx's later theology which is primarily concerned with the development of a contemporary soteriology.

Peeters Publishers The Ge'ez Acts of Abba Estifanos of Gwendagwende:
Book SynopsisAbuna Estifanos (Stephen), the edition and translation of whose hagiographical life is presented here, was the leader of a monastic reform movement that shook the foundations of the Ethiopian State and Church in the fifteenth century. Estifanos (Stephen) started his movement at the end of the reign of the king whom Emperor Yeshaq succeeded in 1413 AD. The reform movement of Estifanos and his followers, called Daqiqa Estifanos or Estifanosites or Stephanites, was known to the local clergy from the time of the reign of Emperor Zar'a Ya'eqob (1434-1468). As we know from Zar'a Ya'eqob's writings, including some miracles of Mary or Ta'ammera Maryam, the Estifanosites were at loggerheads with the monarch. The outside world first became aware of the Daqiqa Estifanos from the narratives of the Portuguese embassy that visited Ethiopia during the years 1520-1527. Since then several travelers and scholars have written about these monks. The basis of the Estifanosites reform movement was that monks should observe a strict monastic life, according to the rules laid down by the fathers of monasticism, and that the teachers of the Church should limit the doctrine of Christianity to what was found in the eighty-one canonical books of the Bible, recognized by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, and the observance of God's Commandments found in them. As they understood it, the main commandment neglected at that time was the order to worship God alone - the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. They considered the segdat, "prostration to the ground," a form of worship that should not be performed in reverence even to the Holy Cross or to the icon of the Madonna and Child, and certainly not out of respect for the king and his name. We hear little about the activities of the Daqiqa Estifanos after Na'od (1494-1508). But their history is a major component of the history of the Church. Although the acts of a few of the followers of Estifanos were published decades ago, the publication of the acts of their leader, the Gadla Abuna Estifanos, has somehow had to await the present day. Coincidentally, there is at present a movement to revive and pursue the reforms of the Estifanosites, which adds importance and urgency to the publication of this Gadla.

Peeters Publishers The Septuagint and Messianism: Colloquium
Book SynopsisThe question of the extent to which the Septuagint reflects an evolution in messianic belief in comparison with the Masoretic Text has come into prominence in recent years, and in view of the role played by messianism in Jewish belief of the late Second Temple period and in early Christianity it seemed very appropriate that "The Septuagint and Messianism" should be chosen as the theme of the 2004 Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense. This volume contains the papers given at the Colloquium, which are concerned both with methodological issues and with the interpretation of specific texts (in practice the majority of the texts in the Septuagint for which a messianic interpretation has been claimed). The papers are very far from all reflecting the same approach, and it has frequently happened that the same texts have been treated by different contributors from very different viewpoints. But the fact such different viewpoints are expressed is a proper reflection of the complexity of the issues involved in the question of the extent of messianic belief in the Septuagint, and of the fact that the question requires a nuanced answer. It is in any case hoped that the varied approaches reflected in the papers will serve to make clear the underlying reasons for the differences between those who take a "minimalist" and those who take a "maximalist" view on the subject of the Septuagint and Messianism.

Peeters Publishers Song Divine: Christian Commentaries on the
Book SynopsisFrom T.S. Eliot to Bede Griffiths, many a Christian thinker has found in the Bhagavad Gita a source of genuine spiritual insight and inspiration. As Christians continue to explore the text in a spirit of dialogue, new points of theological interest are discovered and new insights gained into the meaning and importance of the text for Christian thought and practice. In this collection of Christian commentaries on the Bhagavad Gita, Christian theologians and scholars of Hinduism offer a variety of different perspectives on the text using a diversity of commentarial approaches and styles, from close textual analysis and exegetical comparison to a more general theological reflection on the text, from comparison of the Gita with a particular Christian classic to a focus on specific religious categories such as detachment, incarnation and eschatology. While some contributions focus mainly on the similarities between Christian thought and the Gita, others also engage differences in a mutually critical and constructive way. Each of these commentaries thus offers a distinctive lens through which Christians may read the Bhagavad Gita, and points to the endless possibility and promise of inter-religious hermeneutics, or the religious reading of a sacred text from another religious tradition.

Peeters Publishers Towards Another Future: On the Christian Faith
Book SynopsisFrom the beginning, the gospel has been understood and articulated in terms borrowed from the cultural context in which it finds itself. For the largest part of the church's history, the prevailing context has worked with a static vision of humanity and the world. Theology and philosophy perpetuated this static worldview. This was both legitimate and necessary as long as the culture was shaped by such a worldview. Since the advent of modernity, however, this is no longer the case. The advent of science and technology has seen the static view of things give way to an understanding of ourselves and our world as dynamic entities. This has made the traditional understanding of faith increasingly untenable. One might say that the gospel has become the prisoner of its previous embodiments. The church's determination to hold on to established forms, and with them the traditional understanding of humanity and the world, has led to its increasing alienation from the prevailing culture, especially in the West. For many in our society, the church's language has become increasingly incomprehensible and its message increasingly untenable. In this book, the author argues that the church's attachment to a static worldview is the fundamental cause of the current crisis, especially as this is manifest in western Europe. He provides a detailed discussion of the European context and analyzes the main features of the traditional, static understanding of faith and its roots in classical culture. He then examines the contemporary crisis of faith and offers a critical evaluation of attempts at 'restoration'. Finally, he proposes a vision of the way forward for the church as it struggles to come to terms with the modern worldview.

Peeters Publishers Arabic Theology, Arabic Philosophy
Book SynopsisIn the course of his career, Professor Richard M. Frank of the Catholic University of America produced a hugely significant corpus of works on the intellectual activity in Classical Islam known as Kalam, which he argued should be rendered as 'speculative theology'. He also wrote on the Qur'an, on the Arabic and Syriac philosophical tradition, and argued vigorously for a new reading of the famous religious scholar and theologian al-Ghazali (d. 1111) as a devotee of the cosmology of Ibn Sina (d. 1037). In this volume, fourteen scholars, many of them contemporaries of Professor Frank, engage with his legacy with important and seminal works which take some of his ideas as their points of departure. The book is divided into six sections: the Qur'an, Paths to al-Ash'ari, Al-Ash'ari and the Kalam, Christian Falsafa, Avicenna and Beyond, and Al-Ghazali on Causality. There are major articles on Qur'anic emendations and Arabia and Late Antiquity, on the Arabic Plotinian Tradition, on Syriac Philosophical Vocabulary, and an important reading of the Greek-Arabic translation movement in terms of the practical and exact sciences. There are seminal studies of atomism, with valuable translations of complex theological passages previously untranslated, of the Christian philosophy of Yahya ibn 'Adi, of a late Mu'tazili argument for the existence of God and a hitherto unedited section on optics by Ibn Mattawayh. These are complemented by important, close readings of Avicenna's epistemology and his Metaphysics together with a major, new survey of the Avicennan tradition in the madrasas of the Islamic East. The volume ends with two discussions of the perennial question of al-Ghazali's theory of causality. In addition, the volume contains an autobiographical piece by Professor Frank and a complete bibliography of his published works.

Peeters Publishers How Do Stories Save Us?: An Essay on the Question
Book SynopsisThe postmodern turn in theology reminds us that religion is imaginative before it becomes prosaic or propositional. Theologians are now joining literary critics, novelists and poets in asking the question, "How Do Stories Save Us?" Claiming that the truth of religion, like the truth of its nearest analogue, art, is primordially a truth of manifestation, this book explores the question in constructive conversation with the hermeneutics of David Tracy. With Tracy's analogical imagination as a guide, Scott Holland takes the reader on an intellectual adventure through narrative theology, literary criticism, poetics, ritual studies and aesthetics in the composition of a theology of culture.

Peeters Publishers Woman, Mother and Bride: An Exegetical
Book SynopsisOver the past fifty years, studies pertaining to the reality of the church in the Apocalypse have, for the most part, tended to be either selective or sketchy in their treatment of the relevant material of the book. Yet in all fairness to the seer of Patmos, his portrayal of the church as a reality decidedly complex and at once profound can only be attained in a thoroughgoing study of the principal ecclesial narratives of his work, so as to allow for that indispensable 'synoptic' overview of such intentionally correlated material. "Woman, Mother and Bride" is such a study. It re-examines the relevant imagery of the Apocalypse but from the perspective of the seer's ecclesial 'thought-world' and on the basis of his overriding pastoral concerns for the 'seven churches' without which his work will continue to puzzle and trouble at every page. The ensuing outlook on the church is panoramic in its scope yet compelling in its appeal which further goes to confirm the Apocalypse as one of the most significant theological achievements of early Christianity.

Peeters Publishers Commission Narratives: A Comparative Study of the
Book SynopsisCommission Narratives is based on the author's doctoral dissertation in Groningen (2002). The monograph offers the first overarching, comparative treatment of commission narratives in the canonical and apocryphal Acts of the Apostles, analysing them in their ancient literary setting. Following a survey of this widespread narrative theme in the cultural environment of early Christianity, Czachesz establishes a threefold social typology of divine commission (institutional, prophetic and philosophical) and explores the occurences of the three types in the canonical and apocryphal Acts. The central chapters of the book provide a close reading of the textual evidence, investigating intertextual relations, the function of commission in the narrative structure, and the biographical models of self-definition that commission stories offered to the ancient readers in their changing social and ecclesiastical environments. Based on this textual analysis, Czachesz makes new proposals about the reconstruction, Sitz im Leben and dating of several apocryphal Acts. Finally, he examines the synchronic structure of commission, showing that the variety of commission narratives emerges from a constant set of motifs that are generated by interactions among the characters.

Book SynopsisThe "Visio Pauli" and the Gnostic "Apocalypse of Paul" is the first modern collection of studies on the most important aspects of the "Visio Pauli", the most popular early Christian apocalypse in the Middle Ages. The volume starts with a short study of the textual traditions of the "Visio Pauli", its Jewish and early Christian traditions as well as its influence on later literature, such as Dante. This is followed by studies of the Prologue, the four rivers of Eden, the place of the Ocean, the relation between body and soul, the image of hell and its punishments, and the connection with fantastic literature. Finally, a codicological, comparative, and textual re-evaluation of the Coptic translation attempts to correct earlier errors and to rehabilitate the value and interest of this long neglected version of the "Visio Pauli". The book is concluded with a study of the earthly tribunal in the fourth heaven of the Gnostic "Apocalypse of Paul". As has become customary, the volume is rounded off by an extensive bibliography of the "Visio Pauli" and the Gnostic "Apocalypse of Paul" and a detailed index.

Four Deaf persons, rooted in the Deaf community and professionally involved in Deaf pastoral ministry, Thomas Coughlin (USA), Cyril Axelrod (South Africa), Peter McDonough (UK), and Beth Lockard (USA), relate their views on and experiences with shepherding Deaf communities as social-cultural minority groups within the hearing Church, and their efforts to enculturate the Christian message, which often looks so typically hearing in Deaf eyes, in Deaf cultures. Marcel Broesterhuizen, hearing, puts their reports against the background of the paradigm shifts that have taken place in the field of deafness and Catholic views on the relationship between Church and culture. Peeters Publishers Interreligious Learning
Book SynopsisThe growth of secularisation, pluralism and globalisation have placed the West's traditional monoreligious education under pressure. Christianity no longer possesses a privileged position in Western Europe. Since the 1970's, a number of scholars have been trying to formulate an answer to this question of multireligiosity by developing a multireligious concept of religious education. As both a critique on, and alternative for, the multireligious model, scholars in the 1990s developed the interreligious model of religious education. This aproach distinguishes itself from monoreligious pedagogy through acknowledging plurality among the pupils as both a part of departure and as a possible end result of religious education. Moreover, it openly approaches the plurality of religions and worldviews as a learning opportunity. Religious education thus becomes a place of encounter and dialogue between different religious convictions. Interreligious learning further distinguishes itself from the multireligious model by overcoming a purely objective representation of the multitude of religions. In the interreligious model, students are not only informed, but are introduced to the cognitive and value commitments underlying the different religions, giving them the opportunity to enrich and develop their own personal religious identity. The teacher takes an explicit and particular religious (Christian) standpoint, but also tries to bring in other committed religious and philosophical voices. The interreligious model aims to teach students that holding a proper religious identity while having an openness to the religious other is not necessarily self-contradictory. What is more, that authentic religiosity is able to welcome the other in his/her vulnerability and strength as a witness to God. In this volume, scholars from various disciplines (theology, pedagogy, psychology and ethics) and from different religious backgrounds (Jews, Christians and Muslims) face up to a total of ten challenges related to interreligious learning. Challenges that may act as obstacles to the acceptance of this possible new paradigm for religious education.

Peeters Publishers Theology and the Quest for Truth: Historical -
Book SynopsisIn 2001, three research groups from the field of systematic theology and church history at the Faculty of Theology, K.U.Leuven, decided to join forces in an interdisciplinary project, entitled: "Orthodoxy: Process and Product". The main aim of this project consists of a "church-historical and systematic-theological study of the determination of truth in church and theology". Senior and junior scholars from the three groups agreed to take this theme as the starting point and leading question from which the many research projects they are engaged in, could be brought into relationship and - as far as possible - integrated. Although the question for theological truth already structured the research being conducted in the three groups to a significant degree, joining forces promised the realisation of a surplus-value, and this both through the gathering of a considerable critical mass (in total more than thirty junior and senior researchers) and the interdisciplinary design of the project. In this volume a first collection of contributions to this project, from a diversity of angles and research subjects, is presented. In these contributions scholars from the participating research groups investigate the implications of the overall research question for their particular line of research and research methodologies, and suggest how from this specific research the overall question may be refined and elements of answering it can be provided.

Part One is devoted to a detailed exegetical analysis of John 4:19-26 focusing on the relationship between Jews and Samaritans, the meaning of pneuma and aletheia as well as the question whether Jesus reveals himself as the Messiah to the Samaritan woman. In Part Two Thettayil offers an extensive study of the replacement theme in the Fourth Gospel. He studies this issue in connection with the Johannine community and with the presentation of Jesus as the fulfilment of the temple. In his final chapter Thettayil enters into the difficult field of "Johannine Replacement Theology", taking up the challenge of confronting the theological implications of the way the fourth evangelist presents judaism.

Book SynopsisPapers presented at the Fourteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 2003 (see also Studia Patristica 40, 41, 42 and 43). The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

Book SynopsisIn 2005 the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana celebrated its 125th year as part of the University Library of the University of Amsterdam. Several events were held to mark this anniversary, including lectures and an exhibition. In this volume the history of the library is examined further with new and incisive articles on the life and work of many of its leading figures and an analysis of part of Leeser Rosenthal's original collection. In addition, new material is presented regarding the fate of the library during the Second World War. A year earlier, in 2004, Adri Offenberg retired as curator of the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana. Alongside a review of his work at the library, this volume provides a complete bibliography of all his published work until 2006 and what has become known in English as a festschrift: a collection of studies in his honour by Dutch and international colleagues and fellow bibliophiles about items in the library collection, as well as topics relating to Jewish booklore unconnected with the library. This volume is a tribute to Adri Offenberg the curator, but above all to Adri Offenberg the groundbreaking researcher.

Book SynopsisDuring the Renaissance period, when the Greek texts of the Bible became accessible again to Western scholars, a large number of words were identified that seemed to be attested only in the Septuagint and New Testament: the famous "voces biblicae", "biblical words". They were held by some to reflect a special kind of Jewish Greek, or perhaps even a peculiar Greek idiom created by the Holy Spirit in order to express the unspeakable mysteries of God's grace. Today, scholars usually prefer more down-to-earth explanations. Moreover, the list of "voces biblicae" has been much shortened because many words that were initially found only in the Bible later turned up in the papyri. Nevertheless, the "biblical words" continue to fascinate. The present volume contains seven essays illuminating different aspects of the vocabulary of the Greek Bible.

Book SynopsisThese two volumes consist of a critical edition and English translation of the two earliest known Armenian sets of scholia on the Heavenly Hierarchy of Dionysius the Areopagite. Composed in the monastic schools of Erznka in the late thirteenth century, these scholia provide significant insight into how the Heavenly Hierarchy in particular, and Armenian translations of Greek texts in general, were understood by Armenian scholars in the Middle Ages. This editio princeps of the scholia represents a rare critical edition of a native Armenian composition from the medieval period. In addition to the text and translation, these volumes include a textual commentary as well as a critical collation and English translation of a number of scholia from the Armenian version of the Greek scholia on the Heavenly Hierarchy.

Peeters Publishers Religion Under Siege I: The Roman Catholic Church
Book SynopsisThe stance taken by the Catholic Church in occupied Europe during World War II remains a significant focal point of historical research. In the last ten years we have been confronted with a resurgence of the so-called 'Pius-war', the frequently emotional polemic surrounding the justification or absence thereof of the role of Pope Pius XII, the head of the Catholic Church at the time. The work presented here, however, focuses on the role of the local churches rather than that of the Pope and the Vatican. Its goal is to shed light more specifically on the position maintained by the Catholic bishops, clergy and faithful in a variety of European countries under occupation throughout the war. The local churches are approached from a political-social, institutional and ideological perspective. This collection of essays represents the results of a research project established under the auspices of the European Science Foundation entitled 'The Impact of National Socialist and Fascist Occupation in Europe' (1999-2005). Within the broader framework of the project, research into the aspect of Church and Religion was scribed more specifically to Team 2 'The Continuity of the Churches'. The team strove to reach as broad a spectrum possible, both with respect to the churches and religions in Europe (Catholicism, Protestantism, Orthodoxy, and to a limited degree, Islam) as the various regions of the European continent (North, West, Central and (South) East). The present volume contains the research results presented in relation to the Catholic Church. Developments in Central and Eastern Europe are given priority, in particular in Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia, Poland and Lithuania. In addition, a number of articles endeavour to shed light on developments in Western Europe as in Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Austria. The goal of the present volume is to stimulate an ongoing comparative study of the attitude of the Catholic Church during the Second World War from a European perspective. Together with a parallel volume that deals with the Protestant and Orthodox churches, this approach can be extended to include other ecclesial denominations and religions in Europe. While significant differences exist between the various countries and denominations, several similar patterns of approach are also strikingly evident.

Peeters Publishers Building Bridges in a Multifaceted Europe.
Book SynopsisBuilding bridges has been and still is the main task of the European Society of Women in Theological Research (ESWTR). It aims to facilitate theological and academic religious debate transcending the borders between languages and countries, as well as those resulting from religions, confessions, cultures or traditions, in order to offer constructive future perspectives. This volume has now adopted "building bridges" as its main theme. It reflects the contributions to the 11th International Conference of ESWTR held in 2005 in the unique historical and cultural setting of Budapest. European women in the lead of theological research discuss the subject on the basis of their different specialist approaches and thus provide a unique spectrum of contemporary discourse from very varied disciplines in theology and religious studies.

Book SynopsisNo one would seriously doubt that religion classes constitute one of the most important forums for religious communication in our time. In order to practice religious education in an appropriate manner, it is crucial that teachers and students have high-quality, useful materials at their disposal. Time and again, there arises a demand for a correct and balanced representation and treatment of non-Christian religions and cultures, especially Islam. In practice, this can give rise to two extremes. In the one case, pages from older textbooks whose value has long since been proven are transferred almost verbatim without everyone ever asking whether what was said at that time can still be literally translated to the contemporary social and religious constellation. At the other extreme, one anxiously rejects any remnants of the approach taken by older textbooks, in an attempt to make religion more attractive to today's youth, without ever asking whether the traditional choice of materials and its organization might still have something to contribute to today's teachers and students. Although this book is not a tract but a synthesis of historical, theological, anthropological articles, it might help to clarify the topic and approach.

Peeters Publishers Saint Francis of Assisi: a Guide for Our Times:
Book SynopsisHowever interesting and important the stories by his contemporaries are, there is no better place to discover the most profound inspiration of Saint Francis of Assisi than in his own writings. These prayers, poems, proverbs, rules and letters are a gold-mine for those who wish to delve into his thoroughly biblical spirituality. He reveals himself in them as being someone who was permanently touched and marked by his encounter with Christ. In brief: the seeker of God who considered his fellow-creatures as his brothers and sisters; someone who even these days still exerts an unequalled magnetism due to his radical following of Christ. However this does not mean that his biblically inspired radiance does not need to be translated to the challenges of modern life. This is because the eight centuries separating us from him form a wide chasm. In a small way, this book endeavours to contribute to the actualisation of Francis' charisma: a freely chosen life-style characterised by having no possessions as well as by courageous service and courteous respect to others. What can his biblical 'art of living' signify for the modern individual who jealously guards his or her freedom in a world marked by excessive planning and omnipresent technology, and who at the same time is usually not quite sure for whom or for what he or she is actually free?
