    4 in stock

Book SynopsisAs the sub-title indicates the book is a guide to resources in Catholic Social Thought. Part I is a summary in 24 Sections of the 'Distinctiveness, Strengths & Weaknesses of Catholic Social Thought'. Distinctions of Catholic Social Teaching, Non-official Catholic Social Thinking and Catholic Social Thought are drawn, with emphasis on the worth of the system of thought as a theory, with its telos of the 'common good', and its foundational principles as solidarity, justice and subsidiarity. The corpus of teaching is extracted from analysis of some 500 books and articles, in 5 languages, on Catholic Social Thought (constituting the major part of the book) which are summarised in 100-300 words on each. Part II represents survey and pedagogical research in colleges, universities, seminaries and other educational institutions from which is derived conceptions of the subject to guide a proposed syllabus for teaching the subject at 3 levels: beginners, graduates and postgraduates. Part III is the bibliography of books and articles covering the whole range of Catholic Social Teaching and Thought. Three appendices cover Institutes of Catholic Social Thought, Journals of Catholic Social Thought and Details on Secular Think Tanks on Policy-making. The relationship to economic and political policy-making, and to the social thought of other churches and secular institutions are recurrent themes throughout the book.

  • Peeters Publishers Ancient and Modern Scriptural Historiography -

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis collection of nineteen essays is the fruit of ongoing collaboration in Biblical Studies between the Universities of Geneva, Lausanne, Manchester and Sheffield. The essays are arranged under three headings (General Studies; Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism; and New Testament, Early Christianity and their Contexts) but share many overlapping interests. In particular, the studies show intriguingly that the concerns of ancient historians are both similar to and different from those of modern historians. Several contributions also demonstrate that the historical value of ancient texts can only become apparent if they are set alongside suitable co-texts, whether from Mesopotamia, from Greek and Roman writings, or from other sources. In addition it is clear in some of the contributions that the interplay between authors and readers is no less significant in history writing than in the production of other genres. Overall the set of essays shows forcefully that history writing, in antiquity as today, is principally about the meaning of the past for the present, only secondarily about the past for its own sake.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book is about the evolution of 'Augustinianism' in a process of 'spiritual transvaluation' as Augustine of Hippo's thought was appropriated by spiritual masters in the mediaeval period. The chapters deal with a range of experiences in 'spiritual transvaluation' beginning with Augustine's own philosophic transvaluation of Christian 'affectivity'. The first study is about St Gregory the Great's 'pastoral' transvaluation of Augustine's spirituality; the second about William of St Thierry's 'mystical' transvaluation in the twelfth century; and the final one is about Walter Hilton's 'christo-centric' transvaluation, writing as an Augustinian Canon Regular in late fourteenth century England. The Epilogue draws together the themes of each chapter as a reflection about the spiritual nature of 'Augustinianism'.

  • Peeters Publishers Loving God: Krsna and Christ: A Christian

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisHuman love for God has taken myriad expression in different religious traditions. Millions of Hindus are, and have been, passionately devoted to Visnu whom they love with whole heart, whole soul, and whole strength. The Narada Sutras on Loving God is a tenth-century Hindu manual on how to love God. Its teachings on the importance of loving God and on the many ways of loving God have resonated eloquently down the centuries in the songs of Hindu lovers and poets. In this Christian commentary on the Narada Sutras, Daniel Sheridan approaches the text as a catalyst for Christian readers to renew their own Christian love for God. Each Sutra, discussed first within its original Hindu context, is brought to resonate with expressions of love of God within the Christian tradition, thus creating new harmonies and reawakening attention to layers of meaning and levels of passion contained within traditional devotional texts.

  • Peeters Publishers Scrutinizing the Signs of the Times in the Light

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisGaudium et spes (Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World) was promulgated on December 7, 1965. It mirrors a new spirit of openness of the Catholic Church to the world, as well as a new historical consciousness, based on a self-understanding of the Catholic Chuch as "linked with mankind and its history by the deepest bonds" (GS, 1). This historical consciousness resulted in a method of social discernment which, inspired by John XXIII, was articulated by Gaudium et spes in terms of 'scrutinizing the signs of the times' and of 'interpreting them in the light of the gospel' (GS, 4). Conscious of the need to revisit the pastoral constitution of Vatican II, the Centre for Catholic Social Thought at the Catholic University of Leuven, has organised two international expert seminars. The first expert seminar (6-7 September 2003) was rather explorative and focused on the relevance of catholic social thought in its actual context with special attention paid to the signs of the times in an era of globalisation. The discussion on the contemporary signs of the times revealed the necessity to clarify the theoretical and practical implications of the methodology of social discernment and particularly of a social hermeneutic in the light of the gospel. This became the theme of a second expert seminar (Leuven, Louvain-la-Neuve, 9-11 September 2004), the discussions of which are the background to this book.

Book Synopsis2 Corinthians: A Bibliography is intended to be a complete bibliography until 2007. It contains almost 1,900 entries of academic publications on Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians. Making use of the standard bibliographical tools (both printed and electronic), the goal was to include as many references as possible. However, there is no pretense of being exhaustive. 2 Corinthians: A Bibliography builds on the list published in Reimund Bieringer & Jan Lambrecht, Studies in 2 Corinthians (BETL, 112), Leuven: University Press - Peeters, 1994, pp. 3-66. The list of entries up to 1993 was corrected, updated and supplemented with the works published between 1994 and 2007. In addition to a full alphabetical list at the end, this book contains a list of commentaries, a list of references ordered according to the pericopes of 2 Corinthians and according to themes contained in the letter. In order to increase user friendliness full references are used in each list.

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is the second volume in a new series, the Historical Commentary on the Old Testament, which devotes explicit attention to the history of interpretation of biblical tradition in all its stages, both within and without the Hebrew canon. As the term "Old Testament" indicates, the commentary stands in the Christian exegetical tradition. The team of contributors comprises scholars from all over the world and from any different churches and denominations. The commentary is intended not only for Old Testament scholars, but also for ministers and other interested parties. The treatment of every pericope is preceded by a new translation and a section called "Essentials and Perspectives" in which the author summarizes the results of the exegesis in non-technical language. The primacy here is assigned to the final stage of the text. The summary should incite the user to consult the main body of the exegesis which is headed "Scholarly Exposition". Here the approach is that of modern critical scholarship.

During the Monsignor W. Onclin Chair, an annual event held at the Faculty of Canon Law of the K.U.Leuven, known specialists in the field of canon law give lectures on a topical subject. The theme of 2006, 'Homosexuality and Holy Orders' was particularly relevant for specialists as well as for a wider audience because of the recent instruction from Rome that gave explicit directions for the admittance of homosexuals to the holy orders. This theme was considered from an ecclesiastical as well as from a psychiatric point of view. Other speakers based themselves on the practical experience of church administrators.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe family many people long for is a 'safe haven', a place of love. Nevertheless, in many cases this 'love' becomes dangerous or violent. Idealistic views on the family can veil violence in the family. How should we speak about families in order to make visible both the hard realities of some families as well as the positive feelings and experiences? The existence of violence in families challenges many of our presuppositions. When 'love' strikes contains various studies on the theme of violence in families, focussing on four key relational axes. This book deals with violence between partners, between siblings and violence done to children and to elderly people or parents. Family violence is analysed from ethical, philosophical and theological perspectives. The book brings together different views on the relationship between Christianity and different forms of family violence. It offers resources for theologians, ministers, (pastoral) counsellors, chaplains, social workers, psychologists and therapists who are confronted with violence in families.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe fact that over one hundred patristic sources may be found in the documents of Catholic social teaching (CST) would suggest that patristic sources have not been "forgotten" as the title to this book suggests. Yet, this study of every patristic source citation in twenty-one CST documents since the late nineteenth century suggests that just such a conclusion should be drawn. The CST documents in this study largely ignored the historical and literary contexts of the patristic sources, and this had the concomitant effect of limiting appropriation of the fullness of their arguments. In addition, most of the patristic citations do not reflect the socio-ethical concerns of the patristic authors themselves. Even when the patristic citations supported related, theological themes, usually they were relegated to footnotes. This is not a study of themes or of theologies in the CST documents, nor is it a study of the cultural and historical forces at work in the arguments made by those who drafted them. Rather, it is a study of the rhetorical, theological and/or pastoral function of each patristic source citation in the CST documents. In this respect, each CST document stands on its own as a rhetorical tour de force. For that reason, the study concludes with a vision for the "fair use" of patristic sources in future CST documents.

Book SynopsisThe distinctiveness of this volume is its European texture derived from papers delivered at the first European Spirituality Conference held at Milltown Institute, Dublin, Ireland in June 2004. Its aim is to extend the horizons of understanding of the discipline of Spirituality as it is being mapped by some of the most experienced voices in the field. The idea for the conference drew inspiration from the work of the US founded Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality, whose recent President, Dr Stephanie Paulsell, delivered the keynote address. Among the features of this three-part publication is an exploration of methodologies for the study of Christian spirituality, interdisciplinary conversations with scholars from varied fields of scholarship and topics which demonstrate how Spirituality is applied in a variety of situations and locations. Along with the well-known voices of Philip Sheldrake, Kees Waaijman, Dominique Salin SJ and Leif Gunner Engedal, a number of prominent Irish voices in the field of spirituality are given an international forum for the first time.

Book SynopsisToday, some years after the first democratic elections in South Africa as well as the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), it is clear that reconciliation is still needed on all terrains of South African society. More and more people are becoming aware of unchanneled emotions such as guilt, fury, revenge and grief which are still alive in South Africa and which come to fore in different ways. It seems as if reconciliation is a process that will in fact take years, if not generations. The task of the TRC has been completed, but the task of reconciliation on all levels in South African society and the debate surrounding it are far from complete. Very little research has been conducted to understand both the process and the kinds of reconciliation rituals that are needed. And this is exactly the aim of the research described in this book. The research described here aims at making a contribution towards the process of reconciliation in South Africa by specifically looking at one small but important element in that process, namely ritual. To this end several ritual probes were conducted, including an ethnographic probe describing research by means of participatory observation in local South African communities, as well as a cultural-anthropological, biblical, historical and descriptive probe. From these probes ritual qualities were distilled which can be used for the liturgical inculturation of rituals of reconciliation in South Africa.

  • Peeters Publishers Epigonism and the Dynamic of Culture

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThe articles collected in this volume were originally presented at a summer colloquium in Oxford in 2004. The 'epigone' is generally believed to be an imitator, deprived of an independent, original talent. He necessarily follows in someone else's footsteps, a source of inspiration that can (or indeed must) be identified. The epigone can operate only after a certain span of time, during which he has studied his example and learned how to follow in his master's footsteps. An epigone is always influenced - be it consciously or unconsciously - by another person, or by the surrounding cultural climate. The epigone is, per definition, second rate. Furthermore, it is believed that the epigonic product cannot have an independent value. Its only value lies in demonstrating a condition in culture, a spirit of the area, a trend in the arts, philosophy or any other human occupation. Rather than continuing to view epigonism as a natural, if regrettable, part of the cultural process, an inevitable secondary stage within the development of any corpus, the essays in this volume approach the phenomenon from a perspective that is at once more neutral and more positive. They do so not by rehabilitating the quality of the epigone's output, but by redefining his role within the cultural process per se. In each of these contributions, epigones appear as the true carriers of, in this case Jewish, culture. Rather than mere witnesses or, at best, historical mirrors of primary, canonical, cultural codes and modes, they represent one of the dynamic forces within the development of a culture. For the epigone is not merely imitating, but also disseminating. It is not the isolated peaks of the cultural panorama that the articles in this book seek to map out, but the modest planes that allow us to travel the landscape in the first place.

Book SynopsisAs part of a Joint Project of Bilateral Scientific Cooperation between the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) and University of Stellenbosch (South Africa), the Centre for Septuagint Studies and Textual Criticism (Faculty of Theology, K.U.Leuven) organised a Specialists' Symposium on the Septuagint Translation. This scholarly meeting took place from 4 to 6 December 2006 at the Leuven Faculty of Theology, Research Unit Biblical Studies. The symposium's aim was to survey contemporary research within the realm of the translations of the Septuagint. Therefore, the most important Septuagint translation projects were confronted with each other, from the perspective of their objective and methodology as well as with regard to their concrete application in particular cases or examples. The meeting was exclusively intended for specialists in the field. The present book contains the proceedings of this symposium. It offers the full text of the contributions by J. Cook, R. Sollamo, H. Ausloos & B. Lemmelijn, G. Dorival, K. Hauspie, C. Dogniez, M. Karrer, W. Kraus, E. Bons, H.-J. Fabry, A. Pietersma, D. Buchner, C. Boyd-Taylor, H. Van Rooy, J. Naude, A. Piquer, P. • Peeters Publishers Jan Van Ruusbroec: De Mystieke Vereniging Met God

    Out of stock

  • Peeters Publishers The Truth, the Way, the Life: Christian

Book SynopsisThe Truth, the Way, the Life offers a careful reading of the three holy mantras of Srivaisnavism, a south Indian Hindu tradition dedicated to Narayana, Lord of the universe, and Sri, his eternal spouse. The mantras, short prayers rich in theological and devotional meaning, explain and encourage a way of life dedicated to praise and service, surrender and dependence on divine grace - and so introduce key topics that Christian readers will find familiar and still central to the spiritual life today. Francis Clooney's commentary is explicitly Christian and yet deeply indebted to the classic reading of the mantras by the 14th century theologian Vedanta Desika; it thus exemplifies an interreligious learning appropriate to the 21st century and yet, in the end, still deeply Christian.

Book SynopsisThis remarkable book, written by a former senior Dutch diplomat, offers a penetrating analysis of some of the major threats to humanity. Its special feature is that it goes beyond the usual pragmatic approach by putting the emphasis on a spiritual awakening. Edy Korthals Altes makes a convincing case about the need for a fundamental transformation in our deepest motivation; a reappraisal of man's place in Ultimate Reality. Here is, according to the author, the base for the so urgently required change in attitude towards man, material goods and nature. This 'spiritual approach' has not only far-reaching consequences for our personal development, but also for the society we live in. Spiritual values should not be treated as abstract notions, but have to be translated into hard reality. Hence, the inspiring chapters about just and sustainable economics; a comprehensive concept of security and a responsible European Union. This is a challenging and most timely book in a world short of hope and vision. It should be widely read by all those who care for our time.

Book SynopsisIn this study, Emilio Platti dares to enquire directly into the compatibility between Islam and Christianity, as well as between Islam and modernity. He insists that the best way to answer such questions is to return to the origins of the Islamic tradition. What precisely does the Qur'an have to say about Christians? How can we explain the resentment towards the 'West' that seems to characterize some Muslims? Does the so-called clash of civilizations have its roots in Islamic theology? How did the negative portrait of Muslims that was characteristic of the Latin Middle Ages come about? Is it possible to speak in a 'monolithic' fashion about Islam? Is it really the case that Muslims must set about developing a new identity? What is the relationship between Islamic law and modern theories of human rights? What does it mean to be a 'believer' and might this not be the real heart of the tensions and controversies that mark so much of the contemporary encounter between Islam and the West? Platti's study engages both classical and contemporary readings of the Islamic tradition and offers a nuanced and challenging view not only of its past, but of its present and of the directions it might take in the years ahead.

  • Peeters Publishers Monasticism Buddhist and Christian: The Korean

Book SynopsisWhen the history of Christian monasticism is written for the twentieth century, it will include one surprising and revolutionary development that nothing in its previous history could have prepared it for: the living dialogue with Buddhism. Over the past thirty years, while Christian theologians were eagerly discussing their doctrinal traditions with their Buddhist counterparts and rethinking their characterization of the "non-Christian" world, men and women monastics East and West were sharing methods of meditation and experiencing life in one another's communities. All of this, in turn, was part of a larger pursuit among religious-minded people across the world for a revitalized spirituality, one open to the inheritance of traditions previously considered false or at least irretrievably foreign. As the essays gathered together in the book will show, with Buddhist and Christian populations almost evenly distributed and the preservation of community-based monasticism still living in both traditions, Korea is in a unique position to reflect on the ideals of a life of "self-renunciation" as they have been conceptualized and embodied in these two world religions, and to ask what meaning the monastic experience still has for society at large.

15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe twentieth century has witnessed the emergence of a new discourse in Christianity's approach to marriage and family life which is not simply one of official doctrine or institutional teaching. The term "marital spirituality" describes a field of Christian faith and practice that emanates from and has its distinctive contours in the lives of married people and their families. This Companion to Marital Spirituality, multi-disciplinary and international in scope, is dedicated entirely to the exploration of this recent and still relatively young discourse: how the ground was prepared and how it finally emerged in the history of Christianity, the specific field of faith experience and practice it points to, and the perspectives it opens for the Christian understanding of marriage and spirituality alike. By providing an overview of key developments, thematic issues and debates, this volume is conceived as an academically grounded introduction to the growing subject of marital spirituality.

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book takes a point of departure from what the author considers to constitute the important elements in any exegetical exercise; an interaction of three elements which are the text, the reader and the interpretive key. The text studied is Jer. 26-29(MT), the interpretive key is the narrative method. The interaction of the text with the reader, using the narrative method as the hermeneutical key is aimed at discovering what the text says from a theological point of view. So far in the history of research in the book of Jeremiah, except of course in the very recent times, historical questions have dominated, and many authors would doubt the applicability of the approaches with synchronic presumptions to the book. And so, the book of Jeremiah has remained for the most part, described either as a conglomeration of disparate unconnected elements, or a product of ideological juxtapositions that do not exhibit any literary or theological intention, or even pieces of texts chanced together by redactional happenstance. Consequently, works and commentaries on the book though with different accents, are still united in the goal of discovering the diverse origins of the different disparate units, or detecting the ipsissima verba of the prophet (if any). However, armed with tools for narrative exegesis, we could still, in a derived sense, notice a flow of story, a narrative logic in this block which begins with the prophet's preaching in chapter 26, through the tensions raised in 27 and dramatized in the direct duel of 28 between Jeremiah and Hananiah and finally Jeremiah's own vision of peace and the conditions on which the latter is possible in 29. The narrative reading of the four chapters therefore provides the scriptural basis for asking relevant questions concerning the theological problem of true and false prophecy which we identify to be the major theological theme in the block under study.

Book Synopsis1 Timothy Reconsidered contains the presentations and deliberations of the nineteenth meeting of the Colloquium Oecumenicum Paulinum, a distinguished group of some thirty-five international and ecumenical Pauline scholars, held at the Abbey of Saint Paul in Rome during September, 2006. 1 Timothy served as the focal point for all eight papers, although the relationship of this text to that of 2 Timothy, Titus and to other Pauline writings was repeatedly considered. Extensive dialogue centered on the methodological issue of pseudonymity and its continued effectiveness as an exegetical tool. Some urged consideration of a broader view of Pauline letter writing, one that involved authorization to, or joint authorship with, co-workers situated in diverse Pauline missionary centers. The volume also contains a major reassessment of theological themes found in 1 Timothy including the relationship of grace to such heteronomous norms as asceticism, the so-called accomodationist character of the letter, especially the relationship of eusebeia to bourgeois Christianity, and whether the use of the category "household" is, in fact, a misrepresentation of Paul's understanding of the church. Under the presidency of Karl Donfried, presenters included David Horrell, Luke Timothy Johnson, Vasile Mihoc, Margaret Mitchell, Yann Redalie, Laszlo Simon and Thomas Soding.

Book SynopsisWhat does Yiddish have to do with German? It is a question that has perplexed Jews and Germans alike for centuries. The relationship between the two languages - both originating from a common source and from a common location - has often become a metaphor for the relationship of German and Jewish societies, a relationship whose fraught and complex history is one of the most important in the study not only of Jews, but of modern European history. The two languages and their literary cultures have continued their intimate and mutually nourishing relationship and exchange over the course of a millennium, as is documented even from the earliest substantial corpus of Yiddish texts (ca. 1382), while during the last four centuries the relationship can be seen surprisingly clearly and profoundly in a broad range of texts and genres. A reevalution of this fraught cultural relationship is the focus of the present volume, whose panoramic approach suggests that the study of German culture is essential for those who wish truly to understand Yiddish literary culture - and, even more provocatively, vice versa.

Book SynopsisThis study is an exploration of the contributions made by neo-Muslim intellectuals to Islamic thought and the development of Islam in the West. It focuses on the works of contemporary neo-Muslim intellectuals that enjoy a wide circulation, especially among Muslim migrants in the West and throughout the Muslim world. Through their intellectual vision, they impart a certain understanding of Islam, which is acceptable in the Western context and culture. They produce a new Islamic literature which can be classified as a Western Islamic literature. The core questions of this study are: - What are the main contributions made by neo-Muslim intellectuals to Islamic thought and the formation of Western Islam? - What is the main focus of their contributions: political, cultural, social, religious? The author presents an overview of the estimated numbers of converts in different European countries and presents detailed profiles of the main protagonists of the study. He reviews the contributions of neo-Muslim intellectuals to Western Islamic literature. He discusses their contributions to Islamic political thought and to Islamic politics. He studies the attitudes of these converts towards Western civilization. In conclusion, he analyses their views on non-Islamic religions, particularly their polemical views on Christianity.

Book SynopsisSpain and Portugal possess a wealth of medieval churches, including many with original furnishings. Most outstanding of all is the altarpiece or 'retablo', the epitome of Iberian ecclesiastical art. With its exceptional dimensions, architectural structure and extensive imagery, it became clearly distinct from altarpieces elsewhere in Europe. The retable cannot be understood simply as an artistic genre, but must be viewed in its spatial surroundings and against its religious and socio-cultural background. In the present study, the medieval altarpiece in the Iberian Peninsula is approached as a witness to liturgy, faith and devotion. Part I sketches its morphological development from its origins around 1100 to the end of the Gothic age in the first half of the sixteenth century. Part II analyses the retable in its spatial context, formed by the architecture of the church building and other elements of the interior such as the choir. In Part III the retable is discussed as a means of communication, conveying a message between the patron who commissioned it and the recipients. Both as an art object and as a bearer of imagery, the altar retable played an important part in the staging of liturgy in the medieval church of the Iberian Peninsula.

  • Peeters Publishers Augustine and Postmodern Thought: A New Alliance

Book SynopsisOn November 9-11, 2006, the Research Group 'Theology in a Postmodern Context' (K.U.Leuven) organised an expert symposium on the return of Augustine in current postmodern philosophical-theological debates. The North-African Church Father, or at least the thinking patterns or intuitions borrowed from him, are often invoked in discussions on the relation between Christian faith and the contemporary postmodern context. On the one hand, one observes the retrieval of rather premodern approaches in order to remedy the so-called (post-)modern crisis, which is said to result in nihilism, relativism, etc. For what seems to attract some theologians in Augustinian thinking is the (apparent) marriage between Greek (neo-Platonic) philosophy and Christian faith. Such a combination of premodern metaphysics and Christian faith would serve as a necessary presupposition for every legitimate theological epistemology. On the other hand, there are theologians and philosophers who are increasingly trying to reread Augustine from a postmodern stance, stressing the role of particularity, narrativity, historicity, and the decentring of subjectivity, which they see present in Augustine's approach, or from which they deconstruct Augustine's thinking. Central questions discussed during the symposium were: Are the analyses, offered by authors who are re-introducing Augustine with respect to the contemporary context, correct? To what diagnosed problems, and on what basis, do they propose Augustine as a remedy? Are their presentations of other theological and philosophical responses to the present situation correct and which 'Augustine' do they claim to represent? More fundamentally: what would a genuine Augustinian epistemology look like, and what can we gain from it? In what way can it be normative for a theological epistemology in our day? In answering these questions, the symposium focused explicitly on contemporary philosophical and theological evaluations of both modernity and postmodernity, and theological responses to them.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA generation of students at the Faculty of Theology of the K.U.Leuven have been introduced by Roger Burggraeve to the thoughts of Emmanuel Levinas (1905-1995). Levinas has been (and still is) for him a true "master in thinking". For Levinas responsibility is heteronymous because it does not start from the "I" but from the epiphany of the other as the face, appealing to me not "to kill" but to promote him/her. In and through the appeal of the face, the difference between the other and me - expressed in the irreducible alterity of the other - is, ethically speaking, the appeal to the highest "non-indifference": proximity without absorption. As Levinas' thinking carries on obvious Jewish-Talmudic imprint, Burggraeve was interested as to how the concept of responsibility can be connected to a biblically inspired ethic. In which way can the Levinasian view on responsibility enhance a Christian anthropology, and in particular that one articulated by Louvain personalism, and in its turn inspired by a Christian anthropology, so that it benefits from uniquely Christian accents? In this Festschrift for Roger Burggraeve, authors explore the theme of "Responsibility, God and Society" in order to answer two questions. What does Levinas' ethic of responsibility have to offer Christian theology? And vice-versa, what can Christian theology offer to contemporary ethical thought on personal, relational and societal responsibility.

  • Peeters Publishers You are My Son : The Reception History of Psalm

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis award-winning study characterizes Psalm 2 as a messianic-theocratic psalm. Early Jewish literature emphasises the eschatological and sapiential applications of the psalm more than the messianic interpretation. However, surprisingly, we come across the same text combinations that later emerge in New Testament literature: Christian scholarship obviously stood in a long tradition. It is shown how the relevant New Testament texts focus on the messianic interpretation of Psalm 2, especially of the words: "You are my Son". In the post-Easter confusion it functions as an argument to show that the crucified Jesus nevertheless was the Son of God. Luke apologetically explains how in this psalm the Messiah, identified earlier as the despised king, is also called "My Son" by God himself. Mark elaborates this idea for catechetical purposes: Jesus already was the Son of God at the time of his baptism and transfiguration. Finally, Hebrews uses Ps.2 to prove the pre-existence of Jesus. Thus, this volume forms a welcome addition to the existing literature on this topic.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIt is often said that prophecy came to an end in the early Second Temple period. This volume investigates how the Dead Sea Scrolls help to better understand Israelite Jewish prophecy and Israelite-Jewish prophetic texts. However, it not only contributes to the study of prophecy and the prophetic books of the Hebrew Bible by analyzing the textual history and interpretative history of prophetic books - the former being concerned with the manuscripts of prophetic books found in Qumran and elsewhere, the latter being focused on para-prophetic texts and commentaries - it also investigates the phenomenon of active prophecy, i.e. ongoing prophetic activities, after the early Second Temple period, long after prophecy came to its so-called end. In the first part of this volume, Matthias Henze deals with the paraprophetical literature from Qumran. Martti Nissinen addresses the relation between Qumran Pesher hermeneutics and Ancient Near Eastern omen divination. Timothy H. Lim asks if, why, and in what sense the psalms were considered to be prophecies or prophetic. In the second part of the volume, George J. Brooke asks the question, 'Was the Teacher of Righteousness Considered To Be a Prophet?' and Katell Berthelot shows in her study of 4QTestimonia (4Q175) that the Teacher of Righteousness was not the only active 'prophet' in the 2nd cent. BCE. The third part of the volume looks at a wider definition of prophecy. Esther Eshel shows how the tree imagery of the Genesis Apocryphon's symbolic dreams participates in a Jewish tradition that is attested in both earlier and later texts. Leo G. Perdue demonstrates that apocalyptic developed out of both prophecy and mantic wisdom. Perdue also provides a survey of mythical mantic sages in the Ancient Near Eeast and mantic sages and mantic wisdom in biblical, and ancient Jewish literature. Finally, in the fourth part of the volume, Armin Lange offers an example of how the Dead Sea Scrolls help to solve cruces interpretum in the prophetic books of the Hebrew Bible. For this purpose he studies 'The Genre of the Book of Jonah' in light of the paratextual literature from Qumran.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Pauline expressions "infant milk" and "hardy nourishment" or "solid food" (cf. 1 Cor 3,2 and Heb 5,12-14) have frequently been used by the Church fathers, medieval preachers and early modern writers, to voice the contrasting opinions that the words of Scripture are either simple to understand for the uneducated laity, or only discernable for professional theologians. Hence, the present volume considers the place of the Scriptures in both lay spirituality and in theological thinking. It includes a wide range of articles, dealing with vernacular Bible translations intended for common people, visual Bible culture, Bible commentaries written by theologically and philologically skilled scholars, and other related topics. The essays have been arranged in a chronological order, and divided into three sections, the first part considering the period from 1450 to 1520. This period begins when the mediaeval production of Bible translations is at a peak, and when another readership, other than the clergy, has increasingly found its way to the Bible. The printing press, which makes an appearance at the time, provides an immediate response to this growing demand. During the same period, also in the north, we see the gradual rise of humanism, which for figures such as Erasmus and Lefevre d'Etaples, also entailed a great interest in the Bible sources (ad fontes). In 1519 Erasmus published his Novum Testamentum (a revised version of his 1516 Novum Instrumentum), providing from 1520 the basis for various vernacular Bible publications. His Paraphrases on diverse books of the New Testament also appealed to a broad reading public. The effects of this Biblical humanism provide the point of departure for the second part of this book. During the same decennia, through the influence of the Reformation and its sola scriptura principle, new translations became available. The response to this new Bible elan in Catholic circles was varied, from an absolute prohibition of Bible translation in the vernacular, to a cautious integration of a Biblical spirituality in teaching and preaching. The different contributions demonstrate how the religious diversity and plurality continues to expand in this period, with each group increasingly accentuating its own confessional identity. The way in which the Bible is dealt with reflects this process. In the seventeenth century, on which the third section of this book focuses, this evolution is pursued further. From the middle of this century however, an evolution takes place, with a growing number of exegetes taking a critical, scholarly attitude to the Bible, a development that is in an obvious relationship with the growing contemporary phenomenon of secularisation and rationalism. The present book will serve as a valuable companion to Lay Bibles in Europe 1450-1800 (eds. August den Hollander and Mathijs Lamberigts), the proceedings of the 2004 Amsterdam Conference with the same title, which has been published as volume 198 of the BETL-series.
