Book SynopsisThe philosophical activity and publications of Paul Ricoeur cover a period of seventy years. As a student at the Sorbonne in 1935, he published the first product of his pen, "L'appel de l'action. Reflexions d'un etudiant protestant". His last article, "Devenir capable, etre reconnu", was written a few months before his death on 20th May 2005, and appeared later in Esprit. Between those two titles - in which "action and reflection" and "the capable man and recognition" represent key notions of his philosophical itinerary - Ricoeur published some thirthy books. Encouraged by friends and colleagues I present here a revised version of my bibliography, updated and as complete as possible.

Peeters Publishers Seeing the Seeker. Explorations in the Discipline
Book SynopsisFrom 1989 until 2007 Kees Waaijman (b. 1942) was 'Professor of the history and systematics of spirituality' at the Radboud University in Nijmegen (NL). During this quarter century his reputation among colleagues world-wide steadily increased. His many publications include the reference book Spirituality: Forms, Foundations, Methods (2000), which has become an international standard work, available in English, German, Italian and Dutch versions (Spanish and Russian versions are forthcoming). Appreciation for Kees Waaijman's contribution to the scientific study of spirituality is expressed in this collection by an international forum of fellow scholars and colleagues in more than forty new explorations of this field. These are arranged in seven sections, containing articles on respectively 'philosophical foundations of spirituality', 'biblical spirituality', 'the history of Christian spirituality', 'Modern Devotion', 'present-day forms of spirituality', 'the relation between spirituality and health care' and 'mysticism and mystagogics'. The authors and editors of this collection trust that these explorations will contribute to the further development of scholarly research into spirituality in years to come.

Peeters Publishers Christentum Und Politik in Der Alten Kirche

Peeters Publishers Law and Religion: New Horizons
Book SynopsisOver the last few years, debates concerning the wearing of Islamic dress, the relationship between religious liberty and free speech and the enforcement of religious law have barely been far from the headlines. In the United Kingdom, a number of legal changes have altered the interaction between law and religion. The piecemeal and passive accommodation provided by the common law has been replaced by the active protection of religious liberty as a positive right. Looking at the Human Rights Act 1998, the new laws on religious discrimination and religious hatred, the Civil Partnership Act 2004 and developments at EU and devolved levels, this collection examines the legal changes that have occurred and how this affects law and religion as an academic discipline. Law and Religion: New Horizons includes thirteen previously unpublished essays by experts in the field and a detailed conclusion by the two editors, examining the changing interaction between law and religion and the new horizons.

Book SynopsisThe 400th anniversary of Heribert Rosweyde's trendsetting Fasti sanctorum has put the Acta sanctorum, the hagiographical masterwork accomplished by generations of Bollandists, in the spotlight. The rich library of the Westmalle Trappists (Belgium) has a complete series of the Acta sanctorum, with extraordinary provenances: the Pope Adrian VI College of Louvain University, the Jesuit College in Bruges, the Brussels friars recollets, G.J. De Boey, the generous benefactor of St. Louis University and donator to Marquette College, Milwaukee. Moreover, the precious series was subject of a long dispute between the Trappist Abbeys of Scourmont and Westmalle. Twenty illustrations show some dedications, bookbindings, and even a bookbinder's error...A thorough application of D. Pearson's Provenance Research in Book History. The biobibliography of Father Seraphinus Lenssen O.S.C.O (1891-1960), rightfully called the "bollandist of the Trappists", is given in annex.

Peeters Publishers Holy Ground: Re-inventing Ritual Space in Modern
Book SynopsisIn contemporary Western culture ritual spaces are preserved, destructed and reconstructed. Examples are the rearrangement of churches, the rise of multi-religious urban ritual spaces, the remarkable vitality of places of pilgrimage and war cemeteries, and the growing popularity of lieux de mémoire in general with their accompanying forms of 'topolatry' and 'geopiety'. This volume - initiated by a Dutch research group - explores the transformations of ritual space in the modern West from various angles. The first programmatic part of the book focuses on the research into the triad of space/place, ritual and religion/sacrality and the essentially contested notion of the sacred. The next set of contributions deals with the relations between memorial culture and place. American 'landscapes of tragedy', memorial sites for the filmmaker and journalist Theo van Gogh and the popular Dutch singer André Hazes, and the Cancer Memorial Forest in The Netherlands that commemorates the victims of this disease, are analysed in some detail. The third part of the book situates ritual space in the tension between tradition and modernity. The examples of redundant church buildings and rooms of silence, and especially the construction of a new Roman Catholic Cathedral in Oakland, California, show how people construct and re-invent ritual spaces. In the final part, the vicissitudes of Mormon temple space and the wide-spread phenomenon of people ritually throwing coins into water are explored from a cultural-anthropological perspective. The triangle place/space, ritual, sacrality/religion proves to be crucial in the exploration of the processes of re-inventing ritual space in modern Western culture. New forms of memorialization mixed with traditional elements, changing relationships between private and public, individual and collective, temporary and permanent dimensions, and the contested character of sacred spaces all point to a new religious dynamics, characterized by the processes of individualisation, emotionalisation and de-institutionalisation.

Book SynopsisThis number of the Journal of the ESWTR presents a good selection of the lectures and mini-lectures at the conference, which took place in the beach resort of Vico Equense (south of Naples, Italy) from 29 August to 2 September 2007. It was organised by Adriana Valerio, then president of the ESWTR. The articles restore the pluralist perspectives on the topic: "Becoming living communities" across many places, places where women live in families and cities, study the scriptures and traditions, and inhabit the churches. In the event, the three perspectives proved to intersect, showing how well chosen this approach was.

Peeters Publishers Orthodoxy, Process and Product
Book SynopsisFrom 2002-2008, three research groups from the departments of systematic theology and church history at the Faculty of Theology, K.U.Leuven, joined forces in an interdisciplinary project, entitled "Orthodoxy: Process and Product". The aim of the project was a "church-historical and systematic-theological study of the determination of truth in church and theology". The present volume contains contributions from all senior members of the project research group. The contributions are the result of a research conference in 2006, in which both the question of the nature of truth as such, and the process of determination of theological truth was approached from many different angles. Thus, questions from philosophy, systematic theology and history of church and theology are discussed, including such themes as the implications of various philosophical theories of truth for theology, the question of religious pluralism and its ramifications for theological truth-claims, theological truth claims in the thought of Gregory of Nyssa, Augustine, John Driedo, and at the Second Vatican Council. In addition, the meta-question of the relationship between the historical and the systematic aspects of theological truth and the way in which the historical and systematic theological disciplines interact play an important role in this volume.

Peeters Publishers Normativity of the Future: Reading Biblical and
Book SynopsisOne of the major issues of contemporary theology is the relationship between the past and the present. Many see the task of theology as the re-interpretation of past traditions for today. This focus pays scant attention to the future. In recent years theological inquiry into the future and eschatology is surfacing. In the past ten years we have developed an eschatological hermeneutics for the interpretation of biblical and other authoritative texts. This hermeneutical approach integrates the past, present and future dimensions of the interpretive process paying special attention to the future. The first part of this book consists of three foundational articles by Reimund Bieringer and Mary Elsbernd about the approach which we have come to call "normativity of the future". In this part we provide the theoretical foundations of this eschatological hermeneutics. The second part of this book contains contributions by Reimund Bieringer, Mary Elsbernd, Susan M. Garthwaite, Ma. Marilou Ibita, Didier Pollefeyt, Rolando Tuazon and Thomas A. Vollmer who practice this approach in the arenas of Biblical Exegesis, Ethics, and Religious Education.

Peeters Publishers Origeniana Nona: Origen and the Religious
Book SynopsisThis volume contains the written versions of the lectures delivered by the participants of the Colloquium Origenianum Nonum held in Pecs (Hungary, 29 August - 2 September 2005). The main topic of the conference was Origen and the religious practice of his time. Here 49 scholars from some 18 countries publish their newest findings on the greatest and most influential Christian thinker before Augustine, who laid the foundation of the Biblical textual studies, created systematic theology, and was regarded as an authentic spiritual leader of Christianity. The papers not only provide the best overview on a lively field of studies but also demonstrate how Origen's heritage in Christian history, theology and spirituality carried with it the imprint of one of the most vital traditions of our civilization. Similarly to the volumes of the earlier conferences (Boston 1989, Chantilly 1993, Hofgeismar-Marburg 1997 and Pisa 2001), the contributions are published by the series Bibliotheca Ephemeridum Theologicarum Lovaniensium.

Peeters Publishers Never Revoked: Nostra Aetate as Ongoing
Book SynopsisThe Declaration Nostra Aetate issued by the Second Vatican Council on October 28, 1965, on 'the relationship of the Church to non-Christian religions' marks a revolutionary milestone in the history of interreligious relations. With this document the Catholic Church sought to establish a new climate in which encounter and dialogue were understood as part of the Church's role in the world. As such, Nostra Aetate expresses the dialogical spirit of the Second Vatican Council. This book is inspired by the same dialogical spirit of Nostra Aetate, addressing some of the difficult theological challenges that lie ahead of us. It takes Nostra Aetate as an ongoing challenge to develop new theological reflections in the dialogical spirit of Vatican II. The contributors in this volume therefore do not only look to the past, but also critically articulate the challenges and obstacles confronting Jewish-Christian relations today, all the while looking forward to strengthening the dialogue. They not only show the courage of naming the resistances against dialogue, the remnants of substitution theology, the asymmetry in Jewish-Christian dialogue; they set out to develop new perspectives for the theology of Jewish-Christian dialogue. With contributions of Mary C. Boys, Leo Declerck, Mathijs Lamberigts, David Meyer, Marianne Moyaert, John Pawlikowski, Didier Pollefeyt and Simon Schoon.

Peeters Publishers Children's Voices: Children's Perspectives in
Book SynopsisThis book deals with themes concerning religious education and the spirituality of children. Throughout the seventeen chapters, the book stimulates a scholarly discussion about children and theology. The book makes clear that classical Christian theology can benefit from taking seriously children's voices and reflections about children. The volume demonstrates how nuanced and interdisciplinary reflections can be relevant for Christian and social practices of adults with children and how these practices can influence theology. This volume asks the following questions: - Why is it important that we hear the 'voices of children' and what does this mean for how we treat children and relate to them? - What do the 'voices of children' express? How do children experience society and, in particular, religion, and what do they have to say about it? - What do the 'voices of children' mean for theology, ethics and religious education? In what way can our theology change when we see reality from the perspective of children? This book consists of five parts. In the first part the reader receives an overview of the current challenges concerning children and spirituality. The two chapters of this part offer an introduction to contemporary thinking about children, theology and spirituality and the place of 'children's voices' within this scope. The second part refers to biblical sources for contemporary theological reflection on children. The third part contains pedagogical and ethical reflections on children, as well as a view from practical theology about children in the world and the responsibility of churches. This third part looks mainly at children in relation to society, both in the past and in the present. The fourth part focuses on children living in the family, which is seen as a domestic church. The fifth part takes up the theme of children's spirituality again, showing children's own spiritual reflection and ways of theologizing with children in church and family contexts, by communication, literature and all forms of religious education and/or catechesis.

Peeters Publishers Reading Between the Lines: The Interlinear
Book SynopsisKnown primarily through its association with the New English Translation of the Septuagint, the interlinear paradigm promises to become a key methodological tool in the field of Septuagint Studies, greatly clarifying the task of historical critical scholarship. It has, however, yet to receive a comprehensive theoretical statement. The present volume addresses this need. Drawing upon the relatively young discipline of Descriptive Translation Studies, C. Boyd-Taylor, one of the principal architects of the paradigm, outlines a conceptual framework within which it may be critically assessed. He then offers a descriptive analysis of selected texts from the Septuagint, which aims at delineating the normative dimension of the translator's work. In the concluding chapters the author maps out some of the implications of the paradigm, charting a tentative course for future scholarship. Reading between the Lines, will be of interest to scholars and students of biblical studies, Jewish studies, translation studies and anyone else interested in the Hebrew-Greek translations of antiquity.

Peeters Publishers The Syriac Renaissance
Book SynopsisThis volume contains the Acts of the Expert Meeting on the Syriac Renaissance. A Period of Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, organized by the Institute of Eastern Christian Studies, Radboud University, Nijmegen and the Pionier Programme in Syriac Christianity of the University of Leiden (Nijmegen, 2-4 June, 2005). The Syriac Renaissance (11th-13th cent.) is a period which has received relatively little attention as such. Traditionally, the focus of attention has been on the literary production of individual authors as Barhebraeus or 'Abdiso' bar Brikha, without trying to study them in relation with other contemporary authors or within the context of the general theological, cultural and artistic orientations of this period. For this reason, the aim of the Expert Meeting was: - To complete the picture of this presumed Renaissance by presenting the works of less known authors such as Khamis Bar Qardahe, Ghiwarghis Warda, Michael Badoqa, Abu Ghalib and Dioscorus d-Gozarto (David Taylor, Martin Tamcke, Gerrit Reinink, Hidemi Takahashi, Carmen Fotescu). - To discuss the works of better known authors such as Michael the Syrian, Barhebraeus and 'Abdiso' bar Brikha from the intercultural, interreligious and interconfessional perspectives of this period (Dorothea Weltecke, Jan van Ginkel, John Watt, Peter Joosse, Helen Younansardaroud). - To investigate whether these perspectives can also be found in the field of biblical interpretation, manuscript production, church construction, etc. (Bas ter Haar Romeny, Ray Mouawad, Nada Helou, Bas Snelders, Mat Immerzeel). - To draw the attention to comparable developments among the Copts and the Armenians (Adel Sidarus and Jos Weitenberg). The work is preceded by a general introduction to the renaissance (by Herman Teule).

Peeters Publishers Reception of Paulinism in Acts - Reception Du
Auteurs : Andreas Lindemann, Daniel Marguerat, Heike Omerzu, Richard I. Pervo, Stanley E. Porter, Yann Redalie, Jens Schroter, Benedict Viviano, Michael Wolter, Simon Butticaz, Claire Clivaz, Andreas Dettwiler, Jochen Flebbe, Odile Flichy, Jean-Francois Landolt.

Book SynopsisIn the spring of 2005, almost by chance, the Diary of Johannes Cardinal Willebrands, which depicts events from the international ecumenical scene on the eve of the Second Vatican Council, was discovered. The Diary consists of three Notebooks that were written during the period 1958-1961. During this time, Willebrands was also appointed the Secretary of the newly established Secretariat for Christian Unity (1960). As Cardinal Augustin Bea's right-hand man, he played an important role in establishing contacts with the World Council of Churches and with other Christian churches. On the occasion of what would have been Cardinal Willebrands' onehundredth birthday (2009), his Diary has been translated and published into English, with almost one thousand critical annotations. The original Dutch text is included in the annex. The study of the diaries, in the context of the international and national ecumenical movement, can provide new insights, especially into the dialogue between the Catholic Church and the World Council of Churches in the period shortly before the Second Vatican Council. Furthermore, it provides fascinating information about the faction forming within the Vatican in preparation of the Council.

Peeters Publishers The Eyes of Faith : Transformations in the
Book SynopsisWhy are we proposing this anthology of articles drawn from Recherches de Science Religieuse in an English translation? On the eve of its centennial celebrations, the Journal, which has numerous subscribers and readers in English-speaking countries, decided to take stock of its rich heritage in the field of theology, as in that of religious science, embodied in its many past issues and their articles. Over these years and decades, the journal has built up a corpus of documents covering information and thought specific to the French-language sphere of theology and religious sciences. We are also highly aware that the thought reflected in the Journal has taken paths, if inevitably diverse, that are nonetheless rich in encounters and confrontations with what was being taught and thought elsewhere. Such a rich exchange went on over the years that the question arose a decade ago of providing a bilingual, even a trilingual edition in order to facilitate access to the Journal's content. However, opinions from the English-speaking world and beyond converged at that time to encourage us to continue with renewed purpose as witnesses and actors of this French-language realm and to remain faithful to editing the journal in French. Today, it seems to us both useful and desirable to make this theological heritage accessible to a broader public. This first anthology has thus been composed around a fundamental theme, that of faith.

Peeters Publishers Feasts and Festivals
Book SynopsisThis collection of essays, papers originally given at a colloquium in Oxford 2008 involving scholars from the universities of Oxford, Leiden and Bonn, focuses on the theme of Feasts and Festivals in Biblical and extra-Biblical traditions. The topics include studies of the festal gathering in Deuteronomy and funerary rites for children in the Hebrew Bible, feasts in some extra-biblical texts (including 2 and 3 Maccabees), through to treatments of a number of New Testament themes and topics in the gospels and Paul. The focus on the theme of 'feast' brings out new aspects of some well-known texts and sheds new light on a number of themes in ancient Judaism and in early Christianity. This volume will be of interest to all those engaged in Biblical studies and its ramifications in the study of Judaism and early Christianity.

Peeters Publishers Successful Ageing, Spirituality and Meaning:
Book SynopsisAfter more than forty years of studying the subject matter of successful ageing, defining it from perspectives like dependence or psychological and physiological vitality, scholars have only at the end of the nineties made a specific connection between successful ageing and spirituality. This sparked off an increase in spirituality or aspects of gerotranscendence with age in quite a number of studies. Considering spirituality and/or meaning and the ongoing discussion about the predictors of successful ageing and activities associated with the baby boom generation form the background to the articles bundled in this collection. The single thread running through this collection is that the inclusion of spirituality as an anthropological structure of humankind repels reductionism in both the study of the subject matter and the care for elderly people and opts for a moral position keeping respect and humanity in mind. The fourteen articles are thematically classified into seven categories. The categories reflect, apart from the conceptualisation of the two key concepts running through this book, the following perspectives: gerontological, psychological, sociological, anthropological, moral and theological perspectives. The authors explore the two-tiered theme of successful ageing and spirituality from different angles and make an interesting and challenging contribution to the existing corpus of publications in this field. Fundamental motives identified in the articles refer to the need of 'balance' in looking for the essence of ageing successfully, combining life span motives with care, considering culture as a very important parameter and to exploring mental health in relation to (theological) anthropology.

Peeters Publishers The Pseudo-Clementines
Book SynopsisThis book is one of the first modern collections of studies on important aspects of the Pseudo-Clementines, which occupy a special place among the early Christian writings, due to their complicated origin and their relevance in reconstructing Jewish Christianity. The volume starts with two chapters which discuss the problems of the date, place, text and genre of the Pseudo-Clementines. The majority of chapters focus on various aspects and passages of the Homilies and Recognitions. In the Homilies we look at philanthropy, the relationship between Judaism and Hellenism, Appion and Annoubion, Enochic traditions, Orphic cosmogonies, philosophical sources, the theory of two ways and the conversion of families. In the Recognitions we look at the theme of recognition, the doctrine of free will, figures of speech, the Sadducees and the narrative intention of speeches. Finally, both works are interrogated on their uses of centre and periphery. The volume concludes with a discussion of Clement in the Legenda Aurea and, as has become customary, with an extensive bibliography and index.

Peeters Publishers Une Analyse Comparee D'Esther TM Et LXX: Regard

Book SynopsisThe central tenet of Christian faith, namely, that God, through the incarnation, has immersed Godself in human history and undergone its terrors, does not dispel the mystery of the world's pain and may indeed make the mystery that much more profound. This volume examines both the implications of the doctrine of incarnation for the understanding of human suffering and the attempts to provide a theologically responsible account of this article of faith. It combines biblical and systematic-theological reflection with a thoroughgoing survey of the panorama of responses to human suffering developed during the course of Christian history, ranging from the early Christian martyrs, across the medieval mystical tradition and the Reformation, and into modernity. Moreover, it examines late- and postmodern attempts to come to terms with human suffering, by means of either retrievals, or thoroughgoing revisions, of traditional theological conceptuality, and considers non-Christian attempts to address the perennial problem of human pain and death.

Book SynopsisThe ninth volume in the series Documenta Q is concerned with the reconstruction of the Q text behind Luke 6:37-42 par. Matt 7:1-5; 10:24-25a; 15:14. The database and evaluations are expanded and revised versions of those presented and discussed at the meetings of the International Q Project in New Orleans 1990, in Claremont, CA 1991 and Toronto 1993. Just prior to the bibliography at the conclusion of the volume the resultant critical text of Q 6:37-42 is printed. This Greek text is followed by English, German and French translations (Lucan chapter and verse numeration is used as a convenience and a mere convention). The International Q Project's presentation of the critical text of Q 6:37-42, together with the exhaustive history of research on which it is based, will enhance considerably research in the Sayings Gospel Q, the historical Jesus, and New Testament theology.

Peeters Publishers The Book of Life: Biblical Answers to Existential
Book SynopsisThe search for meaning is at once very old and extremely contemporary. Existential questions about origins, our destiny, and the purpose of our lives are no less meaningful today than they were in previous centuries. Since time immemorial, people have tried to find their way in life and to give it meaning. Do things 'have' meaning? Do we 'give' them meaning? And how can we live life to the full? In this book, the authors attempt to provide a few pointers. In the first part, the historical-cultural evolution from mystery to disenchantment is laid out, particularly with regard to our approach to the Bible. In the second, possible responses to this disenchantment are described, ranging from reactionary fundamentalism to enrichment through critical approaches. Finally, the third part offers biblical answers to fundamental existential questions, including those regarding our origin and destiny, human co-existence and social justice, and the relationship between God and human history, and the human experience of violence, suffering and love. This book highlights the way in which biblical literature is essentially and authentically associated with human existence and our quest for meaning.

Peeters Publishers God's Sacramental Presence in the Contemporary
Book SynopsisDuring the long and impressive career of prof. Lambert Leijssen interesting ideas about sacraments, liturgy, pastoral theology, and spirituality were crystallized. It would be sad if the generations after prof. Leijssen would not be concerned anymore about these ideas. Therefore, the contributions in this book in one way or another reflect prof. Leijssen's major theological concerns. They have been taken up in three parts. In the first part, Louis-Marie Chauvet, Jean-Yves Lacoste, George S. Wogul, and Paul Post engage themselves in thoroughgoing fundamental reflections on the sacraments and the liturgy. The second part consists of four contributions dealing with individual sacraments. Jozef Lamberts, Joris Geldhof, Stijn Van den Bossche, and Thomas Knieps-Port le Roi respectively dwell on the sacraments of initiation, the Eucharist, and marriage. The third part contains reflections on the crossroads of sacramental theology, moral theology, and pastoral theology. Andre Haquin, Susan K. Roll, Annemie Dillen, and Marcel Broesterhuizen show in a very leijssenian way that sacraments always point to concrete life situations. By way of introduction to this volume, Matthijs Lamberigts' laudatio pronounced at the solemn celebration of prof. Leijssen's retirement has also been included.

Peeters Publishers Feminist Approaches to Interreligious Dialogue -
Book SynopsisThis anthology injects women's voices into interreligious dialogue, which is all-too-often dominated by religiously authorized spokesmen, and questions the theory and practice of interreligious dialogue from feminist perspectives. The contributors speak from Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Christian and Muslim perspectives and reflect British, Dutch, German, Hungarian, Spanish, Slovene, Turkish and US American cultural contexts. While the European Society of Women in Theological Research (ESWTR) has for more than two decades negotiated its member's national, cultural and linguistic diversity quite successfully, the presence of diverse non-Christian religious communities in Europe has so far been marginalized. As the religious make-up of Europe is changing due to globalization, the discipline of theology must create ways to reflect, study and teach in a religiously pluralistic world. This book explores the possibilities of feminist solidarity in the midst of diversity and conflict by charting a pathway between acceptance of religious differences and rejection of patriarchal tenets within these religions.

Peeters Publishers Le Monachisme Feminin Antique: Ideal Hieronymien

Peeters Publishers Patterns and Persons: A Historiography of
Book SynopsisScholarly research does not develop in an historical vacuum. The questions addressed and the vantage points from where they are studied, are closely related to the social and cultural contexts in which the researchers are working and living. This holds in a particular way true for liturgical research done in the twentieth century. The research carried out in this period was clearly influenced by the changes that various forms of Christianity, and more in general religion as such, went through during this century. The clearest evidence of the strong impact these changes had on liturgical practice is provided by a series of sweeping liturgical reforms taking place in the second half of the century. The research of liturgical scholars was indirectly or directly influenced by the social and cultural processes that were taking place. These processes unavoidably had their effect on the questions that were raised and on the foci that were chosen and it also coloured, at least to some extent, the interpretations given to the data studied. During the last few decades, these issues have frequently and thoroughly been discussed by the Dutch liturgical scholars who are cooperating within the open, inter-confessional and interdisciplinary setting of the Institute for Liturgical and Ritual Studies located at the Tilburg University.Apart from furthering reflection about the various scholarly paradigms that were followed among these scholars, these discussions and conversations also aroused a historiographic curiosity, especially with regard to the development of liturgical scholarship in the Netherlands. How did liturgical studies develop in the course of this century in the Netherlands? What scholarly approaches were predominant? What paradigms and shifts of paradigm can one discern? And how did these relate to the development of liturgical practice and the underlying religious, cultural and historical processes? In several respects the Dutch case was unique, due to specific historical circumstances. These considerations led to the decision to devote a common research project to the history of liturgical studies in the Netherlands and this volume is the final outcome of this project.

Peeters Publishers Eusebe D'Emese. Commentaire De La Genese: Texte
Eusebius of Emesa's Commentary on Genesis, which was written in Greek around the middle of the fourth century, is extant only in fragments preserved in the Greek exegetical Catena and in Procopius of Gaza's Epitome. An early translation of the entire Commentary, however, exists in Armenian (ed. V. Hovhannessian, 1980). In addition, Syriac fragments are preserved in the ninth-century Commentary by Iso'dad of Merv. The present volume brings together the four branches of the tradition. The Armenian Commentary is presented both in Armenian and in a French translation, the first translation in a modern language. The Greek fragments (those of Procopius edited here for the first time) as well as the Syriac fragments are also accompanied with annotated French translations. The present volume, therefore, enables for the first time a comprehensive view of this Commentary, the significance of which lies in the originality of its approach as well as in its intermediary position between ancient Syriac exegesis and Greek Antiochene exegesis of the late fourth and fifth centuries.

Peeters Publishers Seeing Marguerite in the Mirror: A Linguistic
Book SynopsisUsing Marguerite Porete's (d.1310) Mirror of Simple Souls as the case study, Terry outlines a new application of linguistic tools to the analysis of spiritual texts, showing how the tools can elucidate discourse aim, self-presentation, and concepts of God. Terry's book explains the tools, outlines a four-step process for applying them, contextualizes Marguerite's Mirror in light of potential sources, medieval images of women and documentation concerning her trial, and then applies the tools to Marguerite's Mirror. The image of Marguerite that emerges is in sharp contrast to that preserved by her contemporaries who used highly gendered labels: Marguerite's self-presentation is not highly gendered. Gendered elements in Mirror are explainable in light of Marguerite's potential theological and literary sources. Consequently, Terry determines that modern focus on gender images for Marguerite relies less on her own voice and more on historical labels given to her, missing the core of her self-understanding.

Peeters Publishers L'intrigue Dans Le Recit Biblique: Quatrieme

Book SynopsisThe Dhammapada is Buddhism's most beloved compendium of the Buddha's sayings. It is memorized by thousands of monks, nuns, and laypeople, and it is chanted daily by millions of pious Buddhists. The Path of Wisdom presents this distillation of the Buddha's wisdom in a fresh translation together with an explanation of the Buddhist context in dialogue with wisdom from the Bible and the Christian monastic and spiritual traditions. In continuity with the long tradition of seeking wisdom through the exchange of insights and experience, this work explores the possibilities that arise when Christianity engages the profound teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha. Above all, what this text uncovers is that both wisdom traditions speak piercingly relevant words to us today, and that placing them together in conversation yields surprising insights.

Peeters Publishers The Political Ethics of Jean-Francois Lyotard and
Book SynopsisA genuine political ethics seems to require a universal perspective, and yet we are told that the postmodern age eschews universal perspectives. In this book, Georges De Schrijver argues that the leading proponents of postmodernity have not, as is commonly assumed, abandoned the search for universals. Rather they have sought to reshape the concept in ways that account for postmodernity's critique. Examining the thought of both Jean-Francois Lyotard, who prophesies the end of the grand stories, and Jacques Derrida, the leading proponent of deconstruction, De Schrijver comes to the conclusion that each, in his turn, is still in search of the universal. Taking his lead from Kant's unpresentable Idea, Lyotard holds out hope for a universal expressed through respect for heterogeneity, whereas Derrida arrives at this impossible dream through a critical study of Husserl's phenomenology. The common bond for Lyotard and Derrida is their quest of the unpresentable. For Lyotard, this comes through a sublime sadness urging him to side with the silenced party in legal disputes. For Derrida, the same quest is expressed through a yearning for the impossible things to come: a justice that goes beyond legality, a reshaping of the international juridical order, and a hospitality that is truly unconditional in its reach. Underlying the thought of both men is a profound appreciation for their Jewish ethical inheritance, an appreciation they learn from Emmanuel Levinas. In passing judgment on the new world order, both authors go decidedly beyond Kant - and thus beyond modernity - in reaching for a truly transcultural perspective in this era of globalization.

Book SynopsisGerman translation.

Peeters Publishers Anthropology in the New Testament and Its Ancient
Book SynopsisMost of the articles were presented and discussed at the seminar Early Christianity between Judaism and Hellenism at the Annual Meeting of the European Association of Biblical Studies in Piliscsaba and Budapest, Hungary, in August 2006. The anthropological quest is still one of the classical approaches in historical-critical as well as in other methodological approaches to the New Testament. The complexity of anthropological ideas in the New Testament is seldom presented neither explicitly nor in clearly defined terms, but rather in stories about human beings or their (inter-)actions and/or parenetic teaching that is based on some, often unstated, presuppositions of what humans are like. The different essays in Anthropology in the New Testament and its Ancient Context are taking care of this complex situation and address a selection of important problems from the variety of ideas on anthropology in Early Christianity as well as in its Jewish and its Hellenistic context. The book does not aim to show a coherent New Testament anthropology as it is to write a coherent New Testament theology, but rather tries to present new insights into the complexity of ancient anthropological discourses. With that aim the collection includes presentations on the human body and its purity ' a key feature in many ancient cultures and their anthropological systems, questions of purity and impurity, on the key anthropological terms sarks and soma in Paul, how a Greco-Roman reader would understand Paul's anthropological reasoning. Paul's anthropology is also set in relation to Philo's view of humanity. Platonic, tripartite anthropology is also part of an article analyzing the common elements in the teaching concerning the human soul among Sethian, Valentinian and Platonic writers. Conversion, another kind of adaptation of a Hellenistic philosophical concept to early Christianity, different early Christian ideas of the resurrected body, and so-called 'sepulchral anthropology' are further subjects addressed in the book which finally deals with selected anthropological imagery in the Gospel of John and with anthropological perspectives in Hebrews. The book contains contributions by Ida Froehlich, Tom Holmen, Lorenzo Scornaienchi, Martin Meiser, George van Kooten, Paivi Vahakangas, Miguel Herrero de Jauregui, Outi Lehtipuu, Imre Peres, Margareta Gruber and Walter Ubelacker. The essays offer some new angles, new methodological approaches and important insights relevant to anthropological views in the New Testament.
