    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Old Greek of Isaiah represents an intriguing and complex unity within the Septuagint. The present volume contains contributions reflecting a variety of issues pertaining to this version, and also offers perspectives for further research. The topics dealt with can be designated as follows: terminology and vocabulary, unity of the book, rhetorical figures, coherence on the level of a pericope, theology, and hermeneutics (fulfilment interpretation). The Greek version is of course compared with the supposed parent text in Hebrew, but several contributions also show a strong interest in the Greek text as it stands. As to the latter approach the following aspects play an important role: the immediate context (verse; pericope), style, the meaning and function of words and phrases, and related texts. In order to stimulate further research, the volume also offers a full bibliography on LXX Isaiah.

The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

    2 in stock

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores the meaning of five psalms in the Septuagint version (104, 105, 110, 111, 112), not as interpreted in later reception history but as originally intended by the translator. The author retraces the translator's path, accounting for translation choices by comparing the Greek with its Hebrew source, and measuring the impact of the translator's decisions upon the profile of the Psalter, such as the effect of semantic shifts and the extent to which Hebrew poetic features, lexical links and Pentateuchal intertextuality have been lost or preserved. Chapter 1 establishes a methodological framework in dialogue with past and present scholarship. Since the five Psalms studied in this book all begin with the word "hallelujah," chapter 2 is dedicated to the meaning and function of this heading in the Old Greek Psalter. Chapters 3 through 7 comment on Psalms 104-105 and 110-112 respectively. Chapter 8 provides a summary and conclusions.

  • Peeters Publishers The Woman Who Changed Jesus: Crossing Boundaries

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisSeveral features of the story of the encounter between Jesus and a Syrophoenician woman (Mk 7,24-30) are unique within the Second Gospel: the stress on the woman's identity, Jesus' first refusal to help her, the woman's answer recorded in direct speech, and the fact that Jesus does not seem to expel the demon. This monograph seeks to cast light on the pericope by taking recourse to both diachronic and synchronic methods. It begins with the history of the interpretation of Mk 7,24-30 par. Mt 15,21-28, starting from the patristic period. The ensuing historical-critical study of the Markan text includes an examination of the literary relationship with the Matthean parallel and paves the way for an analysis of Matthew's redaction and his position vis-a-vis Judaism and the Gentile world. The book ends with a synchronic and contextual reading of Mk 7,24-30 attentive to its placement in the Gospel in order to reach the final stage of interpretation.

Book SynopsisThis volume contains the acts of the international conference on the Synoptic Problem that was organised at Lincoln College, Oxford, in April 2008. The conference focused on offering a comprehensive assessment of the state of research into the Synoptic Problem over the last hundred years, indicating potential ways in which the discussion might be advanced. In more than thirty essays contributors have dealt with various aspects of the question, including the current state of synoptic studies in general, a comparative assessment of the major synoptic hypotheses, the synoptic gospels and ancient scribal practices, the role and function of hypothetical sources, the synoptic gospels and other gospels, and the reception history of the research. This volume marks the centenary of the publication of the Studies in the Synoptic Problem by Members of the University of Oxford, the results of William Sanday's 'Seminar' that had ran for some fifteen years. But primarily it honours a distinguished contributor to current scholarship on the Synoptic Problem, Christopher M. Tuckett, Professor of New Testament studies at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Pembroke College.

    1 in stock

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe present volume contains the proceedings of an international conference that was held at the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University of Leuven, October 28 to 31, 2008. 'Poetics' and 'religion' take an important place in Ricoeur's oeuvre; yet they still require further investigation. The common link between these two concepts may well be found in the creative dimension of language. Poetics reflect upon it; religion turns to it for help in expressing the experience of the transcendent. Ricoeur has explored and offered ways for reflecting precisely upon this junction. Contributors have studied the many ways these concepts function in the earlier and in the later work, and how they have been used and received in various in various fields and disciplines, including theology. Scholars have been working with Ricoeur in anthropology, ethics, Biblical studies, systematic and practical theology, intercultural philosophy, spirituality, and other disciplines, which together makes for a wide palette of interpretations. Ricoeur's audacious explorations on the intersection of creative language, religion, and philosophical reflection continue to open new ways for reflection in many different fields.

Book SynopsisWithout a doubt, the late Edward Schillebeeckx (1914-2009) remains one of the most important and inspiring theological voices of the twentieth century. The present critically annotated edition by Dr. Karim Schelkens - containing both the original Dutch text and an English translation - now makes Schillebeeckx' private notes, jotted down during the first two council periods, readily available for a wider public, thereby offering its readers a unique possibility to enter into the thought world and the activities of this theological giant. Book SynopsisAt October 28th, 2008, the University of Vienna awarded Emanuel Tov an honorary doctorate in recognition of a life dedicated to the study of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the textual histories of the Hebrew and Greek Bibles. To better illuminate the impact of Emanuel Tov's work on the various fields of Biblical, Jewish, and Christian studies, the University of Vienna decided to accompany the traditional awards ceremony with a small symposium on 'Qumran and the Bible.' The present volume publishes proceedings of this symposium and additional contributions. In his academic memoirs, Emanuel Tov tells his story with the Dead Sea Scrolls and their publication. Lika Tov accompanies Emanuel's article with a history of her Dead Sea Scrolls art work. Armin Lange identifies several causes for the pre-canonical textual plurality of the Jewish scriptures. Florentino Garcia Martinez shows how the Dead Sea Scrolls help to illuminate the history of the Book of Joshua. Heinz-Josef Fabry describes the spectrum of interpretative techniques and hermeneutical approaches to the Jewish Scriptures in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Loren Stuckenbruck demonstrates how the Dead Sea Scrolls illuminate the New Testament and its world linguistically, theologically, and culturally.

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis,In light of the widely acknowledged phenomenon that Zechariah refers to previous Scripture, this thesis demonstrates that these references can significantly contribute to Zechariah's argument by drawing on Mikhail M. Bakhtin's insight of the dialogical orientation of words. The dialogical orientation of Zechariah's word with regard to previous Scripture and Zechariah's audience establishes Zech 1:1'6 as the introduction to the entire book. It also develops a theology of transition and of waiting. Seven case studies demonstrate that the call of Zechariah 1:3-4 sounds through the entire book. The call to be different from the ancestors in a time of waiting emphasizes the people's responsibility to live faithfully within the Sinai covenant. It also points to the prophetic function of the so-called apocalyptic notions in Zechariah and exhibits Zechariah's specific contribution to the Book of the Twelve, to the Old Testament and for the church.

Book SynopsisWe sometimes seem to live in an age when answers, indeed the right answers, appear to dominate all areas of our lives and to our mind this is particularly tragic in the area of theology, a place that should be engaged in the most profound questioning rather than one that finds the answer and sticks to it. This wrestling with what we perceive to be the divine seems out of fashion. Even the ethical debates that rage within the churches about women, homosexuals, abortion, genetic engineering - the list is endless - appear at times to be conducted by two sides that have already made up their minds about the right answer.

• Peeters Publishers A Contextual and Cross-cultural Study of Psalm

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe present work is an attempt to better understand Psalm 109 in relation to its curse content and the ambiguity surrounding the speaker. The psalm appears somewhat out of the ordinary ' the curse elements seem to be out of proportion and give the impression of being imported or inserted. As such, it presents exegetes with a variety of challenges. At the same time, the multiplicity of interpretations Psalm 109 has acquired in the history of exegesis reveals a great deal about the way we read and about the conscious and unconscious elements that colour and direct our reading, especially the mental constructs we acquire through our different cultures, languages, ideological stances or social locations, all of which give rise to different understandings of a text, while defining the context of each understanding or interpretation. By means of an interdisciplinary approach that focuses on the contextual and cross-cultural, the work reveals Psalm 109 to be the product of a typically human theistic behaviour that arises when one is confronted with a threat to one's life and well-being. The work brings to the fore the cultural constructs woven into the text by its author, upon which basis the psalm is to be understood both within its culture and across cultures.

What is spirituality? Can we define the phenomenon? Which forms of spirituality can we discern? How can we understand Christian spirituality? Where do we see possibilities for comparison between the diverse forms of spirituality? Which new forms of spirituality do we need to study? What theoretical approaches are familiar? How do we coordinate all the results of our research? The goal of our congress was, in all candor, to inventory the perspectives of the invited researchers and make an initial attempt to formulate a conspectus of the diverse positions which we now occupy.

Book SynopsisUnderstanding the book of Revelation means understanding its imagery. This puzzling book contains a fascinating world of pictures and images ' every chapter and every page of it is filled with different kinds of images coming from different traditions and developing different sorts of meaning. The search for the origins of the seer's imagery, its cultural, social-historical, and religious meaning, the problem of Johannine rhetoric, and reader responses to the text are important tasks that merit further discussion. The contributions of this collection explore different aspects of this intriguing field by discussing selected issues of the wide range of materials. The contributors different methodological approaches and apply different tools adopted from a variety of disciplines, such as narrative criticism, intertextuality, social/historical criticism, history of religious comparison, gender studies. The book contains contributions by David Barr, Johannes Beutler, Marco Frenschkowski, Steven Friesen, Laszlo Attila Hubbes, Konrad Huber, Michael Labahn, Kirsi Siitonen, Rebecca Skaggs / Thomas Doyle, Hanna Stenstrom and Robyn J. Whitaker. Most of the articles were presented and discussed at the seminar Early Christianity between Judaism and Hellenism at the international meeting of the SBL/EABS in Vienna, Austria, 2007. As this issue is sold out the book is here reprinted in the companion series of Eastern Christian Studies. Heretics and Heresies in the Ancient Church and in Eastern Christianity opens with a biographical note (by P. 5 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the fifteenth century, a fearless Abba Estifanos and his followers openly criticized the monastic leaders of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church for what the monks saw as a gross disregard of monastic rules in the monastic leaders' relationship with political leaders. These monks of the Monastery of Gundagunde, in the province of Tegray, spoke out against the practice of having the monarch appoint abbots to head the large monasteries. Further, they dismissed as unchristian all religious practices that were not prescribed in, or proscribed by, the Eighty-One Canonical Scriptures of the Church. Most of all, they refused to bow to anything or anybody other than the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, including the king. Such defiance in a theocratic polity, in which the monarch was the head of the Church and State, was an extremely dangerous posture. Consequently, Abba Estifanos and his followers suffered unspeakable martyrdom. Vol. 635 tells the amazing story of these monks as they themselves recorded it in Ge'ez, the liturgical language of the Church. Vol. 636 is its English version. It is woth noting that although the narrative is hagiographical, the pertinent facts contained in the text are independently verifiable.

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume is the publication of the acts of a conference held at the University of Lausanne (CH), in october 2009. It collects sixteen contributions on Egyptian Jewish and Christian papyri, read in their context, in four thematic parts. The first one concerns New Testament and papyri, with two programmatic contributions demonstrating the present importance of textual criticism in New Testament exegesis, as well as a state of research on the most recent NT papyri. The second part focuses on the interactions between the Egyptian context, Judaism and the emerging Christianity, with notably the presentation of a fragment of a homily containing Lk 2.35-36 (P.Gen. IV 150). The third part shows how every papyrus can tell a story on early Christianity whether it concerns the Gospel of John or the Gospel of Thomas, or if one uses the multispectral imaging. The last part offers further considerations on papyri and theology, and on the way in which papyri can help to fill in historical gaps. Contributions by R. Burnet, C. Clivaz, J. K. Elliott, K. Haines-Eitzen, S. Honigman, T. J. Kraus, A.-M. Luijendijk, X. Gravend-Tirole, C.-J. Gruber, D. Pastorelli, J. Read-Heimerdinger, J. Rius-Camp, P. Schubert, D. Stoekl, M. Theophilos, J. Zumstein.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisArmenian mediaeval historians, who have concentrated primarily on political high points, have tended to dismiss the more than four centuries dividing the two royal epochs of the Arsacids (ending, A.D. 428) and the Bagratids (inaugurated with the coronation of Ashot I, A.D. 884), as a 'Dark Age'. The intention of the present study, on the contrary, is to attempt the examination of a portion of the 'Interregnum' (600-750) as a period of religious synthesis and social renewal, as well as of intellectual and particularly artistic effervescence. In such an interpretation, the 'Interregnum', despite the unfavourable nature of its exterior and interior political setting, becomes the hypothetical locus during which, the identity of Armenia seems to have been forged, as that of a nation existing outside the framework of a political state. Consequently, the purpose of the present investigation is to eschew a political approach, which has proved at best episodic and fragmentary, in order to seek, in a period devoid of a centralized state, a different explanation for the continuous survival of 'Armenia', in spite of the numerous vicissitudes of its tumultuous history.

Book SynopsisForty-three Syriac and Garshuni manuscripts owned by the Iraqi Department of Antiquities and Heritage are here catalogued and described in great detail. The manuscripts cover major literary genres known to Syriac literature, each of which is discussed in a lengthy introduction with an up-to-date bibliography. To illustrate the contents and styles of the manuscripts, short texts extracted from most of them are given in Syriac and Garshuni with translations in English. Some manuscripts are liturgical and were once the property of Melkite, Syriac Orthodox, Syriac Catholic, and Assyrian churches. Other manuscripts are spiritual and theological compendiums, biblical lectionaries and psalms, Melkite pastoral letters dealing with Roman Catholic devotional practices, charms and popular medicine, and sogyata and durikyata poems. A unique manuscript consists of a Kurdish (Kurmanji) grammar in Syriac authored by a 19th century Chaldean monk living in the Monastery of Rabban Hormizd in northern Iraq. The codices are dated between the 16th and the 19th centuries, though there is one dated to the 14th century, and they were produced in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and central and eastern Anatolia.

Book SynopsisThe collapse of the communist regimes in Europe at the turn of 1980’s/1990’s led to the necessary to seek new models of State and Churches relations in the post-Communist countries. However, even though two decades, 1990–2010, have not been enough to bring the process of transformation to completion, we can state that, at that time, the basic regulative principles of the relations in the politico-religious area have been specified and legally laid down. The study Concordat Agreements between the Holy See and the Post-Communist Countries (1990–2010) endeavours to describe and evaluate in a systematic manner a relatively extensive area of contractual regulation of relations between the Catholic Church and the post-Communist countries on the basis of research of concordat agreements. On the basis of comparative evaluation, it shows the prevailing models of solutions as well as their inner adequacy to the religious phenomenon and to the pluralistic democratic social order.

Book SynopsisCanon 1342 of the Code of Canon Law of the Roman Catholic Church presumes that a judicial procedure is the normal way to impose a legal penalty. Only when there are just reasons against its use are extra-judicial means to be employed. Perpetual penalties such as dismissal from the clerical state cannot be imposed except by means of judicial procedure. This was the author's presumption until he was faced with a direct question from a priest accused of the crime of child sexual abuse. "Do I have a right to a trial, if I am accused? Am I not presumed innocent until proven guilty?" This book is an attempt to answer the question. Given the rise of clerical child sexual abuse scandals in Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, North America and Germany, this book addresses a question of prime importance to the Church and civil society.

  • Peeters Publishers Liturgy of Liberation: A Christian Commentary on

Book SynopsisThe Upadesasahasri or Thousand Teachings of the great eighth-century sage Adi Shankaracharya is a distillation of the ancient Upanishads, intended for use by teachers and seekers in the Hindu tradition of Advaita Vedanta. It has been variously interpreted as a major theological treatise, an elevated philosophical exposition, or a guidebook to mystical experience. Liturgy of Liberation offers a fresh reading and commentary on the Upadesasahasri in terms of oral performance and sacramental practice, placing its sacred, scripted dialogues into conversation with the Apostle Paul and other witnesses from the Christian tradition. What results is not merely new appreciation for Shankara and his radical message of non-duality, but also a renewed sense of the scandal of the cross, the subversive power of the word, and the mystery of Christian discipleship. Beyond this, Liturgy of Liberation explores the potential of dialogue itself to disclose the intimate, liberating presence of God at the heart of creation and the core of every human being.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisVarious opinions on the nature of Aphrahat's interactions with the Jews have essentially revolved around either accepting or rejecting the claim that the Persian Sage had contact with (Rabbinic) Jews and/or may have been influenced by them. The issue was never settled. To provide answers to the related questions the author uses a textual comparative methodology, juxtaposing texts from both sources and analyzing them in relation to each other. Every section that deals with such comparison is organized into three sub-sections: 1) agreement, 2) disagreement by omission; and 3) disagreement by confrontation. The study is structured around the general theme of ritual as addressed by Aphrahat in his work. It compares the treatment of circumcision, prayer, Passover, Kashrut and fasting in Aphrahat's Demonstrations with the treatment of the same themes in Babylonian Talmud. In addition to dealing with primary conclusions that answer the questions regarding the nature of Aphrahat's encounters with the Jews, the researcher provides a set of additional or secondary conclusions that concern variety of topics such as the nature of Jewish missions to the (Jewish) Christians and Aphrahat's treatment of the Christian Pascha in relationship to the idea of the Christian Sabbath.

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this book, Mirella Klomp gives an account of her research on the sound of worship among Surinamese Lutherans and Ghanaian Methodists in Amsterdam. Departing from the idea that the sonic spectrum of liturgy comprises more than 'church music' alone, she introduces 'sound' as a new and broader concept for the investigation of worship. It is a methodically transparent study that elaborates on liturgical ethnography, and thus investigates how the sound of worship takes shape in two particular churches. This first profound study on immigrant worship in the Netherlands starts with a theoretical introduction of basic notions, and continues with an empirical sounding of the field. In the final chapter, the author arranges a conversation between the cultural-anthropological outcomes of her research on the one hand, and theology on the other hand. The author thus illustrates that liturgical practices may offer important theological notions and shows how different approaches in Liturgical Studies can converge.
