Book SynopsisPapers presented at the Eighth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 1979. The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

    2 in stock

  • Peeters Publishers Ruusbroec's Mystical Vision in 'Die gheestelike

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisIn his masterwork, Die geestelijke brulocht (The Spiritual Espousals), the fourteenth-century Flemish mystic Jan van Ruusbroec used his profound knowledge of Trinitarian theology to show that the apex of the spiritual life consists in our being taken up into the love of the three persons of the blessed Trinity. The care and precision with which Ruusbroec describes the ascent from "the active life" to "the interior life" and from there to the culmination of "the contemplative life" is evident in the way he carefully distinguishes between three terms that could all be translated as "love": minne, karitate, and liefde. James Wiseman’s astute reading of Ruusbroec’s treatise shows how the affective aspect of love (liefde) and the aspect that expresses itself in virtuous activity (karitate) are both subsumed under the all-embracing reality of minne, the love that flows forth from the triune God and then draws us back to a blissful reunion with our loving Source.

  • Peeters Publishers No Power over God's Bounty: A Christian

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Qur’an often addresses Jews and Christians as “People of Scripture” to indicate that they have received revelation from God. Yet, while acknowledging the special relationship and knowledge that this revelation brings, the Qur’an at the same time criticizes the People of Scripture for not remaining true to God’s guidance and claiming special power over God’s gifts. The mixture of acknowledgment and criticism is based on actual encounters with Jews and Christians at the time of the revelation of the Qur’an. This Christian commentary on the 31 texts in which the Qur’an discusses and addresses the People of Scripture includes the Muslim tradition of interpretation of these texts and adds Christian resonances in order to contribute to future dialogue between Muslims and Christians on the common heritage and the differences between them.

  • Peeters Publishers The Patristic Masora : A Study of Patristic

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisThough fairly distinct among Syriac manuscripts, the nearly twenty exemplars of the so-called Syriac “Masora” remain relatively unknown and often misunderstood. These handbooks were developed to help the reader pronounce, interpret, and compare words from across a spectrum of different sources: including works of patristics, theology, liturgy, and the Bible. Because earlier studies of this genre have focused, almost exclusively, on the biblical portions of these manuscripts, little has been known about the collections of excerpts from 255 patristic-era writings included in many of these handbooks. This volume is the first-ever study and transcription of over ten thousand excerpted ‘vocalized words and readings’ (šmohē w-qroyoto) from works attributed to Greek writers such as Ps.-Dionysius, Basil, Gregory of Nazianzus, and Severus of Antioch. This material has the potential to inform not only Syriac studies and Patristics, but the broader study of literacy and modes of learning in the Medieval Middle East.

  • Peeters Publishers Die Briefe 1 und 2 des Ostsyrischen Patriarchen

    1 in stock

  • Peeters Publishers Evagrius Ponticus, Letters. Armenian Translation

Book SynopsisThis book is a critical edition of a medieval reworking of the fourth-century Letters and additional works of Evagrius of Pontus. The Medieval Armenian collection presents the letters not as letters by Evagrius alone but as a correspondence of Evagrius with his advisor Melania the Elder. Continually interwoven with Biblical texts, they show the monastic teacher as gnostikos guiding his female ascetic pupil. As a fourth-century philosopher and monastic, Evagrius wrote treatises, kephalaia and scholia discussing knowledge, biblical interpretation and ethics. A follower of the teachings of Clement and Origen, he strongly influenced the intellectual development of monastic life in the East and in the Latin-speaking West. Although some of his writings were destroyed in their original Greek following the condemnations of 543/553, many survived in Syriac and Armenian; in the medieval Armenian monastic setting, they influenced later monastic teachers including Gregory Narekats’i.

Book Synopsis"These Things Have Been Written" calls to mind the fashion in which the Fourth Gospel was written, with particular emphasis upon Johannine characterization. In various ways it elucidates many facets of the evangelist's notion of faith. The final chapters focus on the incarnation of the Word and the new commandment of love. Raymond F. Collins is professor of New Testament Studies at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, and former rector of The American College affiliated with the university. A specialist in the New Testament's Johannine and Pauline literature, he has published a number of significant books on the New Testament including an "Introduction to the New Testament" (1983), "Studies on the First Letter to the Thessalonians" (1984), and the "Letters That Paul Did not Write" (1988).

Book SynopsisThe attempt at inculturation of the Catholic Church in India has given birth to Catholic ashrams. The essence and raison d'etre of a traditional ashram is the figure of the guru. "The Guru in Indian Catholicism" is a reflection on the implications, problems and possibilities of introducing the Hindu notion of the guru into the Catholic tradition. Catherine Cornille, a frequent visitor of the East, where she has studied and lectured, presently teaches courses in the Comparative Study of Religions at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. Her current research focusses mainly on the new religious phenomena emerging from the encounter of religions and cultures.
