Psychotherapy Books
Guilford Publications Basics of Child Neuropsychology
Book SynopsisWritten expressly for non-neuropsychologists, this book offers a concise, friendly introduction to the developing brain and its functions. Stephen R. Hooper renders complex concepts accessible as he describes the structure of the brain and the workings of the nervous system. The book explains how findings from neuropsychological assessments can help educators and clinicians to better understand and remediate children's difficulties. A range of neurodevelopmental and medical conditions that affect learning and behavior from early childhood through adolescence are explored through a neuropsychological lens. Helpful features include key Take-Home Points distilled from the chapters and recommended print and online resources.Trade Review"Will become the standard go-to text for those seeking a basic understanding of children and adolescents who experience neurologically based challenges. This book provides an easy-to-follow primer on how the brain works, develops, and is affected by different types of damage, as well as how to address such challenges through effective assessment and evidence-based practices. It is a 'must-have' resource for teachers, clinicians, and allied health personnel, and a text that all special education teachers and those preparing to teach should count among their most valuable tools."--Steve Graham, EdD, Regents and Warner Professor, Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, Arizona State University "This book offers an easily accessible, straightforward overview of the rapidly developing field of child neuropsychology, and shows how to use insights from the field in work with children and their families. Clear, insightful and comprehensive, the book interweaves science and practice for a wide range of professionals who may not have in-depth knowledge of biology and neuroscience. It provides the reader a solid framework for understanding the connections between case conceptualization and intervention for children with neurologically based challenges. Hooper is wonderfully skilled at conveying sophisticated concepts in a very relatable manner! I envision this book being used in graduate-level courses in clinical psychology, school psychology, social work, and counseling."--Kevin M. Antshel, PhD, ABPP, Department of Psychology, Syracuse University "One cannot imagine a more well qualified author than Stephen Hooper as the author of this quite extraordinary book. His clinical work and highly regarded research have contributed to and informed those in the professions of education, pediatrics, psychiatry, and most certainly child neuropsychology. This book presents a clear and coherent picture of child neuropsychology today--particularly for those with little knowledge of this complex field--and is a singular contribution to those who desire to better understand what we know about brain and behavior in children."--from the Foreword by George W. Hynd, PhD, Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus, University of Georgia "Most books that discuss brain development and brain–behavior relationships are intimidating to non-neuropsychologists--this one is not. Hooper succinctly explains how a basic understanding of brain functioning and behavior can enhance knowledge of children's brain-related strengths and weaknesses, improve communication among various child practitioners, and result in more comprehensive treatment approaches. Chapters describe the basic tenets of neuropsychological assessment, the most common childhood disorders and disabilities, and the implementation of educational, behavioral, and medical interventions. Hooper has certainly accomplished his goal of creating a comprehensive text to enhance fundamental knowledge of child neuropsychology."--Nancy Mather, PhD, Professor Emerita of Disability and Psychoeducational Studies, University of Arizona "This superb work extends well beyond childhood exceptionalities to address an impressive breadth of topics, including essential elements of history, neuroanatomy, child development, normal versus abnormal brain function, assessment techniques and approaches, and evidence-based interventions. Hooper presents complex information in an especially meaningful manner. The topics are well chosen, thoughtfully sequenced, and treated in appropriate detail, which renders scaffolded content that is easily understood and integrated. Learning is enhanced by the book's masterful combination of advance organizers, questions, reminders, summarizing key points, and additional online and print resources. Truly an outstanding and rewarding read!"--Bruce A. Bracken, PhD, School of Education (Emeritus), The College of William and Mary-Table of ContentsForeword, George W. Hynd I. Foundations 1. Guilford Publications Treating Childhood Depression with Contextual
Book SynopsisThis book is the authoritative presentation of contextual emotion regulation therapy (CERT), an innovative intervention expressly designed for depressed children ages 7â13 and their parents. CERT is grounded in decades of research on the development of emotion regulation and on mood repair difficulties as a risk factor for clinical depression. Step by step, Maria Kovacs describes ways to teach children skills to modulate feelings of sadness and distress and break the hold of depression symptoms. Extensive therapist, parent, and child exchanges illustrate key treatment principles. Clinicians learn how to structure CERT sessions and implement personalized socialâinterpersonal, cognitive, behavioral, problem-solving, and psychoeducational interventions. Reproducible tools in the appendices--including forms, posters, and a parent manual--can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8 1/2 x 11 size.Trade Review"CERT is based on decades of groundbreaking research. This book provides a clear presentation of CERT's guiding conceptual model, assessment and intervention techniques, developmental variations, and case illustrations. The parent manual and other appendix materials are especially useful for the clinician who wants to implement this approach immediately. The integration of case material, including actual dialogues, really brings the interventions to life. The book is detailed and well conceived. Kovacs, one of the top scholars in the field of early-onset depression, provides a roadmap for clinicians."--Martha C. Tompson, PhD, Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, Boston University "Kovacs provides a wonderful review of the childhood depression and emotion regulation literatures, including her model of why children (distinct from adolescents) get depressed, and why it is important to treat. Much more work has been done with adolescents, but Kovacs has clearly given a lot of thought to the needs of younger children. She has structured the book very well; I found it both thorough and extremely readable."--Gabrielle A. Carlson, MD, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, Stony Brook University, The State University of New York "Kovacs is a pioneering researcher who has led the way in efforts to understand the presentation and course of childhood-onset depression. This book counts among the 'must reads' for practitioners who work with children struggling with depression. CERT is an innovative treatment that is rooted in science and is likely to promote healing."--Joan Rosenbaum Asarnow, PhD, Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles-Table of ContentsPreface Introduction 1. Guilford Publications Stress Health and Behavior
Book SynopsisExposure to stressful life experiences can disrupt key regulatory systems in the body and contribute to a variety of negative health outcomes. This authoritative text takes a biopsychosocial approach to understanding the role of stress in alcohol use disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, cancer, and other chronic diseases. It presents cutting-edge knowledge about how stressors are conceptualized and measured; connections to disease processes; systemic racism as a significant, ongoing stressor for people of color; and factors that promote resilience. For each of the disorders discussed, proven and promising stress-targeted clinical interventions are reviewed. Student-friendly features include an end-of-book glossary and an extensive bibliography to facilitate in-depth study of selected topics of interest.Trade Review"McCarty provides a tour-de-force synthesis of the massive literature on the biopsychological bases of a range of debilitating and life-threatening diseases. His thorough telling embraces the history of major discoveries and leaves us with a clear picture of the status quo. This is the book clinicians need as they conceive of innovative and timely treatments, and it is an excellent addition to a graduate course in Health Psychology or Psychosomatic Disorders."--Wolfgang Linden, PhD, Dipl-Psych, Department of Psychology, University of British Columbia, Canada "Stress is a ubiquitous element of modern life. This volume provides a comprehensive view of the history and current conceptualizations of stress, as well as connections to both physical disease and psychological and behavioral challenges. Chapters cover essential topics in stress research and interventions, with accessible language and informative tables and illustrations. This is a great resource in a complex area, and one that will be likely become a standard reference and text."--Richard M. Ryan, PhD, Institute for Positive Psychology and Education, Australian Catholic University; Distinguished Professor, Ewha Womans University, South Korea "This book is a masterful achievement. It examines the intricate relationships that exist between stress, health, and behavior, beginning with one of the best historical reviews of the conceptualization of health and disease that I have seen, and following with comprehensive accounts of measurement approaches and specific disease processes. The chapter on the impact of racism as an acute and chronic stressor is particularly important. This book should be on the shelf of every clinical health psychologist and consultation-liaison psychiatrist. It is an outstanding text for advanced undergraduate courses in stress and health and health psychology, and for graduate courses in health psychology and behavioral medicine."--Alan L. Guilford Publications Complex and Traumatic Loss
Book SynopsisIn this needed practice and training guide for all mental health professionals, Froma Walsh presents a research-informed, resilience-oriented approach to help individuals, couples, and families who experience profound loss. Walsh guides therapists to understand and address the impact of complicated and traumatic deaths in relational systems and social contexts. She provides core principles and illustrative examples to foster healing and adaptation; help clients mobilize vital social, cultural, and spiritual resources; and find pathways forward to live and love beyond loss. Essential topics include death of a spouse, parent, child, or sibling; ambiguous and disenfranchised losses; death by violence, suicide, or overdose; collective trauma; and reverberations of past loss in life pursuits, other relationships, and across generations.Trade Review"With clinical acumen and insight, Walsh explores the deeply personal, intricately social process of grieving life-altering loss and reexamining one’s life narrative in its wake. Moving beyond the common preoccupation with stages and symptoms of grief, Walsh provides a far subtler view of the significance of loss for family systems. She seamlessly weaves theory and practice to conceptualize and promote resilience in the face of often traumatic life transitions. The result is a treasure trove of clear clinical guidelines, satisfyingly nuanced and complex case studies, and coherent synthesis of research and practice wisdom. This book is the magnum opus of one of our field’s most fertile, sophisticated, and visionary minds. I recommend it enthusiastically to any practitioner with a passion for accompanying grieving families with clarity and creativity as they find new meaning in a changed world."--Robert A. Neimeyer, PhD, Director, Portland Institute for Loss and Transition "This book is a triumph. Walsh is a wise guide for clinicians working with individuals, couples, and families suffering from the death of loved ones. Based on the latest research, and weighing in on current debates, the book draws on decades of clinical practice related to loss and bereavement. Walsh clearly demonstrates how a resilience-oriented systemic approach can help people 'bounce' forward in their lives, even in the face of complicated and traumatic losses. While covering an enormous scope of tragic circumstances, the book is nonetheless hopeful. Walsh’s conviction that resilience is possible gleams on every page. The book is a gem; it will be a go-to resource for years to come."--Kaethe Weingarten, PhD, Director, The Witness to Witness Program, Migrant Clinicians Network "It seems strange to call a book uplifting when the topic is loss and excruciating grief--but this stunning book shines new possibilities of hope and healing on the heaviness of suffering. In this brilliant, beautifully crafted, and sensitive work, Walsh empowers the reader with crucial concepts and essential practice applications. Universals of grief are attended to, but so are the nuances of sociocultural locations of race, class, religion, or migration. This indispensable resource will be invaluable for courses and clinical training. Professionals will return to it again and again for guidance in helping others, and to cope with their own natural avoidance in attending to unbearable losses.”--Celia Jaes Falicov, PhD, author of Latino Families in Therapy "Walsh brings a lifetime of clinical wisdom and scholarship to this profound discussion of loss, its vicissitudes, and its relation to treatment. She holds both a keen awareness of the effects of traumatic loss and a strong belief in the healing power of relational resilience. The book provides a clear understanding of varieties of loss and how to work with each of them in therapy. It is wonderfully written, moving seamlessly between conceptual information, clinical vignettes, and poignant personal stories. Anchored in a systemic view, the book transcends schools of psychotherapy to speak to how to be therapeutic in the presence of loss--and, ultimately, to the heart of being human. Add this to your list of top ten books about the practice of psychotherapy. It should be a core text in every psychotherapy graduate program."--Jay L. Lebow, PhD, ABPP, Clinical Professor and Senior Therapist, The Family Institute at Northwestern University "Walsh writes pointedly about the need to see grief as a varied and complex adaptation to loss, rather than as a binary of normal versus disordered. She focuses on applying therapy based on human resilience and growth. This book will enlighten students as well as veteran therapists who may not be aware of the many recent updates in this field."--Pauline Boss, PhD, author of Ambiguous Loss-Table of ContentsI. Guilford Publications Making Room for the Disavowed
Book SynopsisIn this uniquely integrative book, Paul L. Wachtel describes powerful clinical strategies to make roomfor aspects of the self that were sidetracked in the course of development. Wachtel explores how early attachment experiences can lead people to turn away from certain thoughts and feelings, building a sense of self and ways of interacting on only a limited range of adaptive resources. His approach draws on psychodynamic, humanistic, systemic, and acceptance-centered cognitive-behavioral perspectives, as well as attention to the impact of race, class, and culture. Filled with rich case material, the book illuminates how a therapeutic approach anchored in the present can help heal the wounds of the past. See also Wachtel's Therapeutic Communication, Second Edition: Knowing What to Say When, as well as Mastering the Clinical Conversation: Language as Intervention, by Matthieu Villatte, Jennifer L. Villatte, and Steven C. Hayes.Trade Review"Wachtel eloquently presents a wonderful integrative approach in which making room is the pivotal process. Making room does not involve interpreting, modifying, or educating; it is about helping the person gain access to parts of self they have shied away from. This is the work on theoretical integration that the field has been waiting for."--Leslie S. Greenberg, PhD, Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus of Psychology, York University, Canada "This is a groundbreaking volume from a giant of psychotherapy who has long sought ways to build bridges between psychodynamic thinking and other traditions. Wachtel's focus on making room challenges some aspects of traditional psychodynamic approaches; at the same time, it makes the psychodynamic methods described here immediately accessible and valuable to practitioners of humanistic approaches, third-wave cognitive-behavioral therapy, or many other varieties of modern psychotherapy. The book is brilliant and challenging--I highly recommend it."--Steven C. Hayes, PhD, Foundation Professor of Psychology Emeritus, University of Nevada, Reno; codeveloper of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy "A necessary companion for practicing clinicians and students alike. Wachtel's book is like a microfiber cloth to clean our psychotherapist-lenses. It highlights the delicate and dynamic relationship between therapist and patient--and is a lesson on how to build a sturdy enough room to house it."--Esther Perel, MA, LMFT, private practice, New York City; podcast host, Where Should We Begin? "This readable book embodies its own subject matter--expanding therapeutic conversations rather than forcing them into the narrow paradigms into which contemporary researchers and clinicians are socialized. Whether trained in DSM diagnoses, symptom-focused manuals, or authoritarian rules of interpretation, mental health professionals will find Wachtel’s book both incisive and liberating. Long admired for his deeply knowledgeable, respectful treatment of competing ideas, Wachtel breaks new ground in this integrative discourse on psychological healing. Beginning therapists will benefit from Wachtel's clarity, practicality, and humanity; seasoned clinicians will benefit from penetrating insights that support their best therapeutic instincts."--Nancy McWilliams, PhD, ABPP, Visiting Professor Emerita, Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey-Table of ContentsI. Taylor & Francis Inc Continuing Bonds: New Understandings of Grief
Book SynopsisFirst published in 1996. This new book gives voice to an emerging consensus among bereavement scholars that our understanding of the grief process needs to be expanded. The dominant 20th century model holds that the function of grief and mourning is to cut bonds with the deceased, thereby freeing the survivor to reinvest in new relationships in the present. Pathological grief has been defined in terms of holding on to the deceased. Close examination reveals that this model is based more on the cultural values of modernity than on any substantial data of what people actually do. Presenting data from several populations, 22 authors - among the most respected in their fields - demonstrate that the health resolution of grief enables one to maintain a continuing bond with the deceased. Despite cultural disapproval and lack of validation by professionals, survivors find places for the dead in their on-going lives and even in their communities. Such bonds are not denial: the deceased can provide resources for enriched functioning in the present. Chapters examine widows and widowers, bereaved children, parents and siblings, and a population previously excluded from bereavement research: adoptees and their birth parents. Bereavement in Japanese culture is also discussed, as are meanings and implications of this new model of grief. Opening new areas of research and scholarly dialogue, this work provides the basis for significant developments in clinical practice in the field.Table of ContentsPart 1 Examining the Dominant Model; Chapter 1 Introduction: What’s the Problem?, Phyllis R. Guilford Publications Facilitating Emotional Change: The
Book SynopsisWhile emotions are often given a negative connotation people are described as being too emotional or as needing to control their emotions this book demonstrates that emotions are organizing processes that enhance adaptation and problem solving. Within an experiential therapy framework, the volume shows how to work with moment-by-moment emotional processes to resolve various psychological difficulties. The first two sections introduce the process experiential approach to treatment. Exploring the interrelationships among emotion, cognition, and change, the authors develop a powerful, clinically relevant theory of human functioning. The third section, a detailed treatment manual, outlines the general principles and methods of therapy and provides step-by-step directions for six specific types of interventions. Excerpts from actual transcripts exemplify the various methods, illuminating the moment-by-moment process for both the client and the therapist. Trade ReviewBuilding on the experiential theories of psychotherapy developed by Rogers and Perls, as well as their own extensive work, Greenberg, Rice, and Elliott have written a highly sophisticated text. A valuable and unique feature is their effort to relate their approach to constructive information processing and the adaptive role of emotion in human functioning. Finally, the book contains a detailed manual of specific methods of therapeutic intervention. The work will predictably have a significant influence on theory, research, and practice in psychotherapy. --Hans H. Strupp, Ph.D., Vanderbilt UniversityGreenberg, Rice, and Elliott have written an immensely valuable book that deserves to be read by psychotherapists of all persuasions. It is theoretically innovative and clinically practical. Their view of emotional experience and its role in individual self-organization reflects a remarkable convergence of cognitive, constructivist, and psychodynamic perspectives, and it highlights the fact that effective therapists must be skilled in fencing and facilitating both subtle and intense experiences within the therapeutic encounter. Their treatment tasks give concrete and practical illustrations of what to do in a variety of common developmental dilemmas. Throughout the volume, the authors convey their own considerable sensitivity and clinical expertise. This is a major work in experiential psychotherapy and a wonderful contribution to psychotherapy process. --Michael J. Mahoney, Ph.D., University of North TexasDrs. Greenberg, Rice, and Elliot have written an excellent treatment manual/graduate text book which details in admirable specificity the theory and procedures of a modern experiential psychotherapy. Guilford Publications Understanding Children's Drawings
Book SynopsisThis practical resource demonstrates how all clinicians can broaden and enhance their work with children by integrating drawing into therapy. The book enables therapists to address the multidimensional aspects of children's art without resorting to simplistic explanations. Approaching drawing as a springboard for communication and change, Malchiodi offers a wealth of guidelines for understanding the intricate messages embedded in children's drawings and in the art-making process itself. Topics covered include how to assist children in making art, what questions to ask and when, and how to motivate children who are initially resistant to drawing. Assimilating extensive research and clinical experience, the book includes over 100 examples of children's work. Trade Review"This carefully crafted and sensitive book will undoubtedly become a standard text for all clinicians who work with children. A comprehensive range of timely issues is covered with a balanced, caring tone that only a highly respected and experienced teacher and therapist could produce. Malchiodi ably demonstrates the benefits of graphic expression for the assessment process and the therapeutic hour. Literature reviews and exquisitely presented case examples and illustrations provide an exciting platform for classroom discussion. This clearly written, state-of-the-art book is a welcome contribution to the child mental health field." --Gerald D. Oster, PhD, Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry, University of Maryland Medical School; coauthor of Clinical Uses of Drawings"This multidimensional approach to understanding children's drawings is rich in research, insight, and applications that will be of immense help to those working with traumatized children." --William Steele, MS, MSW, Director, Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children"A wide variety of therapists who work with children, including myself, stock our therapy rooms with toys, art materials, sandtrays, and miniatures. It seems to me that when we do so we invite our child clients to engage with these materials. This invitation is an awesome opportunity to facilitate, enhance, and promote the child's therapy. Yet clinicians may not take full advantage of what they can learn from children's art....This book will greatly enhance your understanding." --From the Foreword by Eliana Gil, PhD, Starbright Training Institute for Child and Family Play Therapy, Rockville, MD"Where children are concerned, art happens! Now, at long last, we have a clearly stated, commonsense guide to using art in therapy that will prove invaluable to all clinicians who see children in their practice. This book is refreshingly comprehensive, including state-of-the-art thinking on developmental, interpersonal, gender, somatic, spiritual, and ethical aspects of children's drawings. Richly illustrated and sensitively written with a child's best interests in mind, Understanding Children's Drawings is destined to become a classic." --Carol Thayer Cox, Assistant Director, Art Therapy Program of George Washington University, coauthor of Telling Without Talking: Art as a Window into the World of Multiple Personality"Malchiodi writes in a clear, easy-to-comprehend style. She avoids the pitfalls of many other 'basic' texts that fail to address fundamental concepts or get bogged down in too much detail. Her book is also well referenced for any reader who wishes to pursue any of the material further....I believe most child and adolescent psychiatrists and psychiatric residents would benefit from reading this book, whether to use art therapy themselves or to learn about another treatment modality at our disposal in the effort to prevent, diagnose, and treat mental illness."--Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent PsychiatryTable of Contents1. Guilford Publications The Psychotherapy of Carl Rogers: Cases and
Book SynopsisThis book presents ten cases conducted by Carl Rogers, eight of which are fully transcribed. Featuring critical commentaries by notable psychotherapists, the book affords readers the opportunity to read unedited case material by this pioneering -- though often overlooked -- client-centered therapist, and to compare the responses of therapists from diverse orientations. The cases included represent Rogers' work over a 40-year period with clients with a range of presenting problems. Contributing authors, who include practitioners of psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, gestalt, existential, and spiritual models of psychotherapy, as well as client-centered approaches, comment on the strengths and weaknesses of Rogers' approach to each case and evaluate his theoretical assumptions. In all, the volume both honors Rogers' memory and demystifies his contributions to the field. Trade Review"Farber, Brink, and Raskin have compiled a unique and exciting volume. This superbly edited collection of therapy transcripts and associated commentaries helps to consolidate Carl Rogers' legacy to the field and will stimulate critical thinking and discussion for years to come. Therapists of all orientations will appreciate this rich collection of clinical material demonstrating a master clinician at work as well as the stimulating commentaries by leading theorists. The volume will acquaint a new generation of clinicians with Rogers' remarkably prescient thinking and will help to stimulate the type of close attention in academic circles that it so deeply deserves." --Jeremy D. Safran, PhD, Professor and Director of Clinical Psychology, New School for Social Research, New York, NY"To be deeply heard on an emotional level is a rare, transformative occurrence. My father was such a master listener who created an I-thou relationship with his clients. Witnessing his psychotherapy was to view a man fully open, receptive and present to another human being while holding a deep faith in the actualizing abilities of that person. The book offers a broad range of theoretical analyses of 10 recorded and transcribed cases of Carl Rogers. Although the written word never fully captures the aura, essence or ambience of a therapeutic session, it is important to try to understand what Carl Rogers did--what worked and what didn't work--to create a growthful environment for the client. As we critique and learn from his work we advance the field of psychotherapy." --Natalie Rogers, PhD, author of The Creative ConnectionTable of ContentsForeword, Bowen Introduction, Farber 1. Guilford Publications Seeking Safety: A Treatment Manual for PTSD and
Book SynopsisThis manual presents the most widely adopted evidence-based treatment for co-occurring trauma and addiction. For clients facing one or both of these issues, the most urgent clinical need is to establish safety--to reduce addictive behavior, build healthy relationships, manage symptoms such as dissociation and self-harm, and restore ideals that have been lost. Seeking Safety focuses on coping skills in the present; it can be implemented with individuals or groups, by any provider as well as peers. It offers 25 topics, such as Asking for Help, Taking Good Care of Yourself, Setting Boundaries in Relationships, Healing from Anger, Honesty, and Coping with Triggers. The model is highly flexible, practical, and engaging, and can be conducted with any other treatment, including the author's past-focused model, Creating Change. The book has a large-size format and features reproducible client handouts that can be photocopied or downloaded. See also the author's self-help guide Finding Your Best Self, Revised Edition: Recovery from Addiction, Trauma, or Both, an ideal client recommendation.Trade Review"This landmark volume presents a cutting-edge approach to the treatment of patients who depend on drugs to soothe the pain of PTSD. In stunning detail, Najavits shows how the same therapist can treat both conditions concurrently. Her kinder and gentler approach is a welcome change from traditional confrontational interventions. The volume is enriched by her empathy and wisdom. All therapists attempting to help these patients should have this book to guide them."--Aaron T. Beck, MD, founder of cognitive therapy "Fabulous! This treatment manual provides practical, clearly described procedures for treating an extremely difficult group of clients. The organization of the treatment is superb. From my perspective, the most important parts of a comprehensive treatment are here--attention to the client's safety, targeting substance use simultaneously with targeting PTSD, integrating ideals and values (I love the quotations!), a core of cognitive-behavioral interventions, a focus on interpersonal relationships, and attention to the needs of the therapist. Very impressive. Obviously written by an experienced clinician."--Marsha M. Linehan, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Director Emeritus, Behavioral Research and Therapy Clinics, University of Washington "Born of experience and energized by passion, this carefully crafted and thoughtful treatment manual will guide clinicians through the tricky waters of substance abuse and PTSD treatment. Seeking Safety will help clinicians decide what to do and how to do it well. As empirically guided treatment manuals begin to emerge in greater numbers and varying quality, Najavits maintains an essential and elegant balance between a lucid map of treatment directions, on the one hand, and the complex dynamics of the clinical territory on the other. This is a very important work that I highly recommend for clinicians of every stripe."--Howard J. Shaffer, PhD, CAS, Director, Division on Addictions, Harvard Medical School -Table of Contents1. Guilford Publications Aesthetics of Change
Book SynopsisThe fundamental concern of psychotherapy is change. While practitioners are constantly greeted with new strategies, techniques, programs, and interventions, this book argues that the full benefits of the therapeutic process cannot be realized without fundamental revision of the concept of change itself. Applying cybernetic thought to family therapy, Bradford P. Keeney demonstrates that conventional epistemology, in which cause and effect have a linear relationship, does not sufficiently accommodate the reciprocal nature of causation in experience. Written in an unconventional style that includes stories, case examples, and imagined dialogues between an epistemologist and a skeptical therapist, the volume presents a philosophically grounded, ecological framework for contemporary clinical practice. Trade ReviewWritten almost 20 years ago, Aesthetics of Change is a classic in the field of family therapy. It has aged well. The notions it so intricately spins forth are still vibrant, still vital for therapists and students who want to learn to think systemically--wisely--about the context and practice of therapy. Readers will appreciate Keeney's firm, yet relaxed, grasp of Bateson's ideas, his clear explanations, and his sense of irreverence.--Douglas Flemons, PhD, Professor and Director, Brief Therapy Institute, Nova Southeastern University, and author of Of One MindAn astounding, clear, and brilliant exposition of cybernetic epistemology. A major contribution to understanding family therapy!--Luigi Boscolo, MDA persuasive work which will help make the elusive concepts of epistemology and cybernetics accessible to the psychotherapeutic community.--Mary Catherine Bateson, PhDFamily therapy has been an endeavor in search of a theory. Keeney's book fills in that all-important superstructure that every field needs in order to achieve its own conceptual framework.--Lynn Hoffman, MSWAesthetics of Change is really the Rubik's cube in book form. There are six chapters of different colors which can be rotated around a conceptual inner core to create an almost infinite variety of patterns. It's fun and exciting!--Carl Whitaker, MD - Aesthetics is a handbook of [cybernetic ideas] relevant to the clinician with an emphasis on helping the clinician understand the therapeutic context in which he participates and influences....Encourages us to reach for a more poetic, aesthetic approach to our thinking about and dealings with our clients....The argument made that is persuasive is that cybernetic thinking can indeed enhance a therapist's chances of untying the knots of mental process embodied in the stories and experiences clients and therapists construct. --AFTA Newsletter, 7/24/2002ƒƒ This is a rare text which deals unashamedly with complex theoretical issues in a way that relates directly to practice. It is unlikely that anyone who reads this with an inquiring mind will fail to be influenced in their practice. --Journal of Family Therapy, 7/24/2002Table of Contents1. Fundamentals of Epistemology2. Taylor & Francis Inc Culture Centers in Higher Education: Perspectives
Book SynopsisAre cultural centers ethnic enclaves of segregation, or safe havens that provide minority students with social support that promotes persistence and retention?Though Black cultural centers boast a 40-year history, there is much misinformation about them and the ethnic counterparts to which they gave rise. Moreover, little is known about their historical roots, current status, and future prospects. The literature has largely ignored the various culture center models, and the role that such centers play in the experiences of college students. This book fills a significant void in the research on ethnic minority cultural centers, offers the historic background to their establishment and development, considers the circumstances that led to their creation, examines the roles they play on campus, explores their impact on retention and campus climate, and provides guidelines for their management in the light of current issues and future directions. In the first part of this volume, the contributors provide perspectives on culture centers from the point of view of various racial/ethnic identity groups, Latina/o, Asian, American Indian, and African American. Part II offers theoretical perspectives that frame the role of culture centers from the point of view of critical race theory, student development theory, and a social justice framework. Part III focuses specifically on administrative and practice-oriented themes, addressing such issues as the relative merits of full- and part-time staff, of race/ethnic specific as opposed to multicultural centers, relations with the outside community, and integration with academic and student affairs to support the mission of the institution. For administrators and student affairs educators who are unfamiliar with these facilities, and want to support an increasingly diverse student body, this book situates such centers within the overall strategy of improving campus climate, and makes the case for sustaining them. Where none as yet exist, this book offers a rationale and blueprint for creating such centers. For leaders of culture centers this book constitutes a valuable tool for assessing their viability, improving their performance, and ensuring their future relevance – all considerations of increased importance when budgets and resources are strained. This book also provides a foundation for researchers interested in further investigating the role of these centers in higher education.Trade Review"This book makes a unique contribution to the higher education literature by thoroughly exploring culture centers. Although the research on cultural centers and their effect on predominantly White Institutions is minimal, Patton should be applauded for her effort to shed light on their importance. This is truly a "must read" for institutional leaders, student affairs practitioners, and graduate students who want to work as faculty or administrators in the field of higher education."Mona Davenport, Director of Minority Affairs, Eastern Illinois UniversityThe Review of Higher Education"Patton has produced a text "to offer an in-depth understanding of culture centers and their role in higher eduction" (p. xiv). The contributing authors include noteworthy scholars, emerging scholars, and practitioners who bring their professional experiences and expertise to bear on the topic at hand. This combination of rich theoretical and practical perspectives strengthens the book... Patton and her contributing authors do an excellent job of enhancing knowledge of the role and purpose of multicultural and race-specific culture centers on campus, as well as advocating for specific changes in practice to maintain their vital role in social justice work. This text joins a growing group of new publications on issues of campus diversity and inclusion and the role of specific administrative units in shaping and strengthening those efforts."Journal of College Student Development"Writings on black, Latino, Asian-American and American Indian cultural centers on campuses; also includes administrative and theoretical takes on the topic."The Chronicle of Higher Education“Lori Patton’s book is stunning! It has closed the decades-long absence of a definitive compilation to inform Culture Center communities as they function in American Higher Education. As many colleges and universities struggle with issues of recruitment and retention of underrepresented students, this work provides a splendid blueprint for the development of Culture Centers for years to come."Willena Kimpson Price, Director African American Cultural Center, University of Connecticut, Storrs“Culture Centers in Higher Education documents in one volume how ethnic and cultural centers have served as places and spaces where those who have been under-represented in higher education have survived and flourished at predominantly white institutions. Throughout it documents how these centers honor and validate cultural and ethnic backgrounds, and inspire academic excellence and achievement among students without their having to lose cultural identity or values. The writers also speak to the future of cultural centers as places where multicultural centers will also have a place in order to ensure true pluralism on our campuses. As our nation becomes increasingly diverse, these centers serve as models of social justice and thus this book is a must read for all who want to ensure that their institution provides environments that exude academic success and achieve graduation for all students with their soul and identity whole.”Mildred García, President, California State University, Dominguez Hills“Dr. Lori Patton and colleagues put flesh on bones here as they make a strong case for campus-based culture centers in the lives of the racially underrepresented students they serve. Through theoretical, organizational, administrative, and programming models these authors survey the evolving landscape of cultural practices intent on celebrating and supporting the identities of multicultural students. A compelling and provocative front-line treatment of the topic, from those whose lives have spoken and those whose words have made a difference, this is a resourceful compendium for anyone committed to the diversification of the 21st century campus.”Carney Strange, author of Educating by Design and ProfessorBowling Green State University“Culture Centers in Higher Education helps to fill a major void in higher education scholarship. It offers insight and evidence as to the importance of student culture centers as both sanctuaries and sites of resistance. Lori Patton has done a remarkable job of pulling together a range of thoughtful and skilled authors. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in better understanding the challenges of race and ethnicity on U.S. campuses and the importance culture centers play in the lives of students.”Robert RhoadsUCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies“Why do students need cultural centers in the 21st century? Haven’t we moved past dividing into separate racial and ethnic groups? Given what we know about the origins and history of student cultural centers it seems appropriate to have a volume that looks across a variety of perspectives of cultural centers and asks hard questions about their utility, viability, and sustainability in difficult economic times. As editor, Lori Patton has assembled an outstanding group of scholars who bring multiple lenses to the question of the place of racial/ethnic cultural centers on the 21st century campus. This is a collection that should find a welcome home on the shelves of college and university administrators and higher education scholars alike.”Gloria Ladson-Billings, University of Wisconsin-MadisonFrom the ForewordTable of ContentsForeword—Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings Preface. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Tidal Model: A Guide for Mental Health
Book SynopsisThe Tidal Model represents a significant alternative to mainstream mental health theories, emphasising how those suffering from mental health problems can benefit from taking a more active role in their own treatment. Based on extensive research, The Tidal Model charts the development of this approach, outlining the theoretical basis of the model to illustrate the benefits of a holistic model of care which promotes self-management and recovery. Clinical examples are also employed to show how, by exploring rather than ignoring a client's narrative, practitioners can encourage the individual's greater involvement in the decisions affecting their assessment and treatment. The appendices guide the reader in developing their own assessment and care plans. The Tidal Model's comprehensive coverage of the theory and practice of this model will be of great use to a range of mental health professionals and those in training in the fields of mental health nursing, social work, psychotherapy, clinical psychology and occupational therapy.Trade Review'The sheer exuberance of language, elegance of style and conviction of belief will no doubt appeal to many but I suspect that the real value of the book lies not only with its implication for immediate change in its capacity to stimulate critique and discussion concerning the purposes and future of mental health care and for that reason alone is well worth reading.' - William Whitfield, The International Journal of Psychiatric Nursing Research'This is a very readable book and makes the model acccessible for all. Guilford Publications Treating Explosive Kids: The Collaborative
Book SynopsisThe first comprehensive presentation for clinicians of the groundbreaking approach popularized in Ross Greene's acclaimed parenting guide, The Explosive Child, this book provides a detailed framework for effective, individualized intervention with highly oppositional children and their families. Many vivid examples and Q&A sections show how to identify the specific cognitive factors that contribute to explosive and noncompliant behavior, remediate these factors, and teach children and their adult caregivers how to solve problems collaboratively. The book also describes challenges that may arise in implementing the model and provides clear and practical solutions. Two special chapters focus on intervention in schools and in therapeutic/restrictive facilities. Trade Review“Greene and Ablon have done it again. This book illustrates their clinical acumen, conceptual sophistication, and scientific rigor--all at the same time! This is an uncommonly useful book for students and for therapists at all levels of experience. The authors' collaborative problem-solving approach takes into consideration the delicate dance between poorly regulated children and their frustrated and sometimes poorly equipped parents. These children and their families require special interventions, and this innovative book goes a long way to helping us in our clinical practice, teaching, and research.”--Thomas H. Ollendick, PhD, Child Study Center and Department of Psychology, Virginia TechProvocative, conceptually grounded, and clinically wise. The CPS approach looks at a range of common, vexing parent-child problems and applies sound individual and family strategies, innovatively framed in the context of children's deficits in executive functions, communication, and emotion regulation. Loaded with case examples, this is essential reading for all those who work with 'externalizing' children.--Stephen P. Hinshaw, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of California, BerkeleyThis cutting-edge book provides a practical and easily understood guide for treating explosive children and adolescents. It presents an innovative, compassionate model that is very helpful in improving the quality of life for these kids and those who care for them. --Michael S. Jellinek, MD, Child Psychiatry Service, Massachusetts General Hospital; Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School Greene and Ablon's CPS approach is an excellent integration of theory, research, and clinical wisdom. The authors present a thoughtful clinical framework and specific procedures for interpreting and managing children's explosive, noncompliant behavior. This book belongs on the bookshelf of every clinician who works with these youngsters.--Howard Abikoff, PhD, Institute for Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity and Behavior Disorders, NYU Child Study Center - Ross Greene and J. Stuart Ablon...have elegantly translated neuropsychologists' perspective of how children organize their experiences, regulate their emotions and behaviors, and integrated it with systemic family therapy, empathy development, and communications analysis to present a refreshing treatment approach to disruptive behaviors in children and teens....Details a new systemic approach for children with behavioral issues, as well as articulates a significant challenge to interventions derived from learning theory (e.g. time-outs, token economies), which the authors feel are not sufficient explosive behaviors are the result of neurologically based skills deficits that should be remediated by parents in collaboration with their children, not by parents imposing their will on their children....Useful for clinicians at any stage in their training and level of expertise as a comprehensive introduction to a new treatment approach for a very challenging set of familiar clinical issues. --Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Book Reviews, 10/20/2005ƒƒ One of the greatest benefits of the book is its case examples. There are several 'scripts' in which its approach is illustrated in different situations—schools, family therapy, and treatment facilities. These examples provide the reader with excellent demonstrations of the model....The book is well written and easy to read for both professionals and parents. The book's points are emphasized and reemphasized so that there is little possibility for confusion. Treating Explosive Kids can most certainly be a useful resource for psychologists in schools, private practice, and residential facilities and for parents and teachers. --PsycCRITIQUES, 10/20/2005Table of Contents1. Guilford Publications Treating Parent-Infant Relationship Problems:
Book SynopsisWithin a developmental framework, this book guides the clinician to understand the different types of problems that parents have with infants and to determine how a given family might best be served--whether by addressing health concerns that are affecting infant behavior, modifying parental beliefs or expectations, or improving key caregiving skills. Leading interdisciplinary experts detail their respective therapeutic models in a practical, clinician-friendly format, including intervention guidelines and illustrative case material. Special topics covered include working with families of infants with special needs and with those at risk for child maltreatment.Trade ReviewThis is an important and thought-provoking book that carries the field of infant mental health to a new level of synthesis and discovery. The research and practice described in this volume will help students, practitioners, and researchers recognize the challenges inherent in relationship-based activities, integrate the various strands that form the theoretical framework of infant-parent mental health practice, and explore novel methodologies and approaches that will enhance the lives of caregivers and their infants.--Samuel J. Meisels, EdD, President, Erikson InstituteThis volume provides state-of-the-science knowledge for working with parents and infants. Experienced professionals as well as novices will find the book uniquely useful, whether they define their work as early intervention, infant mental health, or developmental care. The authors are all experts in dealing with relationship issues, and bring their evolving theoretical and clinical thinking to the chapters. Sameroff et al. have produced an ideal text for infancy-related graduate courses in psychology, social work, nursing, psychiatry, education, and occupational and physical therapy.--Kathryn E. Barnard RN, PhD, Center on Infant Mental Health and Development, University of Washington School of NursingThis is a landmark volume that forcefully reminds the field that relationships are the key to successful therapy and intervention. Both the early pioneers and the more recent innovators of this approach are well represented in this exciting and forward-looking collection. The inclusion of contributions from diverse fields makes this volume useful for a wide range of practitioners and scholars, including social workers, occupational therapists, pediatricians, psychiatrists, and psychologists. It should be required reading for developmentally and clinically oriented graduate students.--Ross D. Parke, PhD, Center for Family Studies, University of California, Riverside; past president, Society for Research in Child DevelopmentThis long-overdue book meets a compelling need. The gap between what we know about early relationship problems and what we do to help parents and their young children is unacceptably wide. This book offers a wealth of knowledge that can help us narrow that gap. The editors have done a masterful job in bringing together a virtual ‘who's who’ in early childhood mental health, and in making their combined wisdom accessible to advanced students and practitioners.--Jack P. Shonkoff, MD, Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Brandeis UniversityThis is the first integration of therapeutic approaches to problematic parent-infant relationships, and I am sure it will be the best for many years to come. The book is a definitive guide to techniques of prevention and intervention, and it is exemplary in its combination of readability and clinical sophistication. An absolute gem of a collection, this book is essential reading not only for those psychotherapists working with parents and infants, but also for the many others whose technique is influenced by contemporary understandings of early relationships.--Peter Fonagy, PhD, Psychoanalysis Unit, University College London, UK -Table of ContentsI. Guilford Publications What Works for Whom?: A Critical Review of
Book SynopsisThis acclaimed work provides a systematic, comprehensive, and balanced evaluation of the current status of all major psychotherapeutic approaches. With a primary focus on adults, detailed evidence is presented for the efficacy of widely used interventions for frequently encountered mental disorders and specific populations. The book also explains the concepts that underpin psychotherapy research, examines methodological challenges in translating research into practice, and considers the impact on outcome of factors common to all therapies, such as therapist and patient characteristics.Trade Review"This book is a remarkable feat of scholarship. Not only does the second edition encompass the latest research on treatment for many of the problems commonly seen in psychotherapy, but, like its predecessor, it also provides in-depth consideration of issues critical to research design, evaluation, and clinical practice. For researchers, practitioners, and service providers, this book more than fulfills its aims."--Alan E. Kazdin, PhD, Child Study Center, Yale University School of Medicine"The best-titled book in the psychotherapy field returns for a triumphant second edition. The original authors have updated their analysis of the literature using an approach that is calm in tone, liberal in outlook, and judicious in evaluation. They are passionate about evidence-based practice and the proper use of clinical judgment, and they anticipate an evolution of existing psychotherapies in ways that respect necessary complexity and creativity. As experienced researchers and clinicians, they clearly describe the limitations as well as the strengths of the different research methodologies and are opposed to privileging one strategy over another. Without doubt, this book is essential reading for all psychotherapy researchers, trainers, practitioners, and students."--Mark Aveline, MD, FRCPsych, Institute of Lifelong Learning, University of Leicester, UK: and President (2003-2004), Society for Psychotherapy Research"In this era of evidence-based treatment, researchers are proud of their 'significant differences,' and clinicians often find research based on the mean score to be wanting in the individual case. The Roth and Fonagy volume, now in its updated second edition, provides a clinically sophisticated guide to utilizing the existing research with judicious sensitivity to the client who does not fit neatly into oversimplified categories of diagnosis and treatment brands. Simply put, this is the best book on the topic. Researchers will find their work put into a broader context, and clinicians will relish a thoughtful guide through the complicated tasks of assessment and treatment planning."--John F. Clarkin, PhD, Department of Psychiatry, Weill-Cornell Medical College"Given that 'What works for whom?' is the perennial question asked by psychotherapy trainees, this superb book should be required reading in any psychotherapy course or seminar. Roth and Fonagy underscore not only the importance of understanding the answer to this question, but also the importance of asking the question in the first place."--Wendy K. Silverman, PhD, Department of Psychology, Florida International University"A worthy successor and expansion of the first edition. Readers will find comprehensive reviews of empirical outcome studies on psychosocial treatments and selected medications found helpful in working with clients with specific disorders. In addition, the book discusses methodological considerations in designing and evaluating psychotherapy outcome studies, offering a masterful exposition of this complex topic. This is a clinically useful resource that would make an excellent text for graduate students in the mental health fields. I highly recommend it."--Bruce A. Guilford Publications The Case Formulation Approach to
Book SynopsisThis eagerly awaited book shows how skillful case formulation addresses a critical challenge in psychotherapy today: how to use empirically supported therapies (ESTs) in real-world clinical contexts. The author explains the basic theories of cognition, learning, and emotion that underlie available ESTs and shows how the theories also guide systematic case formulation. By crafting a sound formulation and continually refining and monitoring it as treatment progresses, the therapist can smoothly shift theoretical gears and weave together elements of different ESTs to meet the needs of individual patients, who typically present with multiple problems. Hands-on tools, reproducibles, and many concrete examples are included. Trade Review"Persons's insights into case formulation are second to none. This book brilliantly demonstrates that you don't have to sacrifice good science to be an excellent clinician, and vice versa. I recommend it to psychotherapists and students at all levels of experience who are interested in using the best theories and clinical techniques to help their patients achieve real and lasting change. Persons's rare combination of clinical practicality and scientific dedication makes her a role model for every young scientist-clinician."--Marsha M. Linehan, PhD, ABPP, Professor and Director Emeritus, Behavioral Research and Therapy Clinics, University of Washington; developer of DBT "This groundbreaking volume will train the next generation of cognitive-behavioral therapists. Its sophisticated blending of case-level formulation with empirical principles of behavior change is a threshold event in CBT's ongoing engagement with clinical complexity, comorbidity, and nonadherence."--Zindel V. Segal, PhD, Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry, University of Toronto–Scarborough, Canada "Decades of research and clinical experience meet in this seminal book. Persons provides a guide for both the novice and experienced practitioner to deal with even the most complex of cases. This significant work will no doubt become the shining light by which the idiographic approach to CBT will be guided in the future. One of the few books that is worth even more than the purchase price!"--Nicholas Tarrier, PhD, FBPsS, Department of Psychology, Institute of Psychiatry, King's College, London, UK"There is no greater challenge facing mental health professionals than moving from scientific theory and research to clinical practice. Persons has addressed this critical issue for many years, and has come up with solutions that demand the attention of serious health professionals. She convincingly shows how to analyze complex cases in ways that are both scientifically sound and practically feasible and effective. Persons is the consummate scientist-practitioner. This book is a 'must read' for students, academics, and practitioners."--Gerald C. Davison, PhD, William and Sylvia Kugel Dean's Chair, and Professor of Gerontology and Psychology, University of Southern California- This excellent book describes treatment formulation and the therapeutic process well, from a cognitive-behavioral framework. The reproducible forms are extremely helpful, especially for new therapists who are beginning a private practice. All-in-all, the author helps us to look at the therapeutic process in cognitive-behavioral terms and design it with each specific client in mind, and not in terms of a general protocol. Guilford Publications Five Ways of Doing Qualitative Analysis:
Book SynopsisThis unique text provides a broad introduction to qualitative analysis together with concrete demonstrations and comparisons of five major approaches. Leading scholars apply their respective analytic lenses to a narrative account and interview featuring "Teresa," a young opera singer who experienced a career-changing illness. The resulting analyses vividly exemplify what each approach looks like in action. The researchers then probe the similarities and differences among their approaches; their distinctive purposes and strengths; the role, style, and subjectivity of the individual researcher; and the scientific and ethical complexities of conducting qualitative research. Also included are the research participant's responses to each analysis of her experience. A narrative account from another research participant, "Gail," can be used by readers to practice the kinds of analysis explored in the book.Trade Review"An extraordinary achievement. This is the book I will recommend to my quantitative colleagues when they ask, 'Just what is qualitative research?' Unlike other books that give steps for doing a qualitative study, Five Ways takes the reader into the thoughts and feelings involved in conducting research. The exciting, informative interactive discussions among the researchers and the participant provide unique insights. I will use Five Ways as the basic text in my qualitative courses."--Donald E. Polkinghorne, PhD, Professor Emeritus, Department of Counseling Psychology, University of Southern California"Not only do the authors look at a common data set in five different ways, but they also reflect on how all five analyses look to each of them, and these explorations are 'looked back at' by the participant from whom the data set was derived. This book provides an engaging and intimate view of the many selves it takes to bring qualitative analyses into being and the reflexive practices that contribute to the scientific and ethical integrity of research."--Margarete Sandelowski, PhD, RN, FAAN, School of Nursing, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill"This unique work is a wholly absorbing adventure in comparative methodology. For the student, it will serve as an effective and informative introduction to a range of central qualitative methodologies. For the seasoned scholar, it provides a wonderfully nuanced view of the complex processes of decision making in qualitative inquiry. The book challenges us to grapple with major issues: the goals of our work, its functions in the social world, and its ethical implications. This is a landmark work in the development of qualitative inquiry."--Kenneth J. Gergen, PhD, Department of Psychology, Swarthmore College"The logic of the book is transparent: it presents a narrative, multiple interpretations, and a comparison of the varied interpretations. The experience of walking through the various interpretations and then seeing how experts unpack the differences and similarities among them is remarkable. Although many books are written for introductory courses on qualitative methods, very few authors attend to how the structure of a text--not just its content--might be pedagogically significant. I applaud Wertz et al. for thinking explicitly and intentionally about how to conceptualize and organize their text in a way that facilitates learning."--Suzanne M. Wilson, PhD, Department of Teacher Education and Director, Center for the Scholarship of Teaching, Michigan State University"This text addresses one of the most frequently asked questions in qualitative analysis: what is the difference between phenomenology, grounded theory, discourse analysis, narrative research, and intuitive inquiry? The authors explain the theory that underlies each approach and illustrate its application and the resultant findings, making the book a worthy text for a qualitative methods course. As an added bonus, the authors present the participant's reaction to the results of the five different analyses and discuss the ethical implications in terms of letting the participant speak for herself, issues of confidentiality, and tensions around interpretation of data. I would definitely use this book in my advanced qualitative research course."--Donna M. Mertens, PhD, Department of Educational Foundations and Research, Gallaudet University"A powerful, richly nuanced, brilliantly innovative pedagogical intervention into the field of qualitative inquiry. This book is clearly written, grounded in case materials, and very accessible to students. The narrative is driven by the voices and insights of preeminent scholars, each an expert in one of five ways of doing qualitative analysis. This book represents the most innovative approach to date for teaching qualitative analysis. It will provide a starting place for the next generation of students who want to learn how to be well-grounded qualitative inquirers."--Norman K. American Psychiatric Association Publishing Gabbard's Textbook of Psychotherapeutic
Book SynopsisThe advancement of LGBTQ+ rights; calls for racial and social restoration and justice; the COVID-19 pandemic. All three have changed society and the practice of psychotherapy in profound ways. They are all also featured prominently in this second edition of Gabbard's Textbook of Psychotherapeutic Treatments. Updated for the first time since 2012, this volume reflects advances not only in psychotherapy itself—the latest empirical data, as well as our increased understanding of the interface between brain and mind—but also in the culture at large. In these pages, readers will find • A new section on racial and ethnic diversities in psychotherapy, including discussions on working with patients of African American, Asian American, South Asian American, and Latin American backgrounds• A new section on gender and sexualities in psychotherapy that examines the unique issues and opportunities that arise when treating gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, and gender diverse individuals• A chapter on the rapidly expanding role of cyberspace in psychotherapy, including the increased use of telepsychiatry, driven in no small part by the pandemic Additionally, this second edition features a new chapter on supervision and consultation, which describes both the important role they play in a therapist's training and development and common pitfalls to be aware of. Lastly, readers can expect to find the most up-to-date information on a range of psychotherapeutic modalities that include psychodynamic psychotherapy; cognitive behavioral therapy; dialectical therapy; supportive psychotherapy; and family, couple, and group psychotherapy. With chapter summaries and key points that make it easy to reference the comprehensive information, as well as extensive lists of recommended readings, this volume is more than just the authoritative guide to the range of current psychotherapeutic treatments—it is also a gateway to further exploration and learning.Trade ReviewThe purpose of this book is to explore significant changes that have occurred in the field, as well as empirical data that supports the efficacy of the major forms of psychotherapy. It includes updated chapters and new topics related to societal changes impacting how therapists practice. This book serves as a comprehensive resource for present-day psychotherapists. This book provides a comprehensive review of most evidence-based treatments in practice. It serves as an excellent resource for psychotherapists interested in learning about new treatment modalities.
