Psychotherapy Books
American Psychiatric Association Publishing Trusting in Psychotherapy
Book Synopsis Trusting in Psychotherapy is an important book that fills a lamentable void: although virtually everyone—therapists, students, and patients alike—believes that trust is the foundation of psychotherapy, the topic has been neglected in the psychiatric literature, to the detriment of the therapeutic relationship. The author, who brings five decades of study and practice to the enterprise, posits that cultivating trusting psychotherapy bonds—especially for patients who have experienced developmental trauma in close relationships—is complex, challenging, and a critically important topic for examination. Whereas therapists are inclined to focus on patients' problems with trust, the author argues that trusting cannot be understood apart from trustworthiness and that therapists should give equal attention to the task of becoming trustworthy to their patients. Blending developmental science and ethical thought in an interdisciplinary spirit, the author draws on contemporary writings of philosophers to elucidate the concepts of trust and trustworthiness. What it means to trust in the practice of psychotherapy; the many facets of trusting and trustworthiness; attachment relationships, both secure and insecure; the central role of hope in trust; and the ethical-moral basis of trusting and trustworthiness—these and other topics are addressed with competence and care. Intellectually engaging and designed to provoke thought, the book: • Offers a broadly developmental perspective, reflecting the belief that attachment trauma plays a profound role in many severe psychiatric disorders and emphasizing that the resulting and pervasive distrust and social alienation pose significant obstacles to developing therapeutic connections.• Provides an overview of the professional literature on developing expertise in conducting psychotherapy, with discussion of current research.Addresses the proliferation of new therapies in the context of competing schools of thought and what this proliferation means for the therapist caught between science and practice, academics and clinicians. • Is aimed chiefly at psychotherapists, yet its conversational, generally nontechnical style makes it accessible to those who are not mental health professionals, including patients who might wish to listen in on the conversation and families who desire a more complete understanding of the therapeutic process.• Includes key points at the end of each chapter to help the reader stay oriented and focused on the most important concepts. Trusting in Psychotherapy argues persuasively that we should shift the balance of our efforts from developing therapies to developing therapists, a view that deserves to inform mental health research and thought leadership.Table of ContentsAbout the AuthorForewordPrefaceAcknowledgmentsIntroduction: The Scope of Trust in PsychotherapyChapter 1. Taylor & Francis Inc Everyday White People Confront Racial and Social
Book SynopsisWhile we are all familiar with the lives of prominent Black civil rights leaders, few of us have a sense of what is entailed in developing a White anti-racist identity. Few of us can name the White activists who joined the struggle against discrimination, let alone understand the complexities, stresses and contradictions of doing this work while benefiting from the privileges they enjoyed as Whites. This book fills that gap by vividly presenting – in their own words – the personal stories, experiences and reflections of fifteen prominent White anti-racists. They recount the circumstances that led them to undertake this work, describe key moments and insights along their journeys, and frankly admit their continuing lapses and mistakes. They make it clear that confronting oppression (including their own prejudices) – whether about race, sexual orientation, ability or other differences – is a lifelong process of learning. The chapters in this book are full of inspirational and lesson-rich stories about the expanding awareness of White social justice advocates and activists who grappled with their White privilege and their early socialization and decided to work against structural injustice and personal prejudice. The authors are also self-critical, questioning their motivations and commitments, and acknowledging that – as Whites and possessors of other privileged identities – they continue to benefit from White privilege even as they work against it.This is an eye-opening book for anyone who wants to understand what it means to be White and the reality of what is involved in becoming a White anti-racist and social justice advocate; is interested in the paths taken by those who have gone before; and wants to engage reflectively and critically in this difficult and important work.Contributing AuthorsWarren J. Taylor & Francis Inc The Neuroscience of Learning and Development:
Book SynopsisIs higher education preparing our students for a world that is increasingly complex and volatile, and in which they will have to contend with uncertainty and ambiguity? Are we addressing the concerns of employers who complain that graduates do not possess the creative, critical thinking, and communication skills needed in the workplace? This book harnesses what we have learned from innovations in teaching, from neuroscience, experiential learning, and studies on mindfulness and personal development to transform how we deliver and create new knowledge, and indeed transform our students, developing their capacities for adaptive boundary spanning.Starting from the premise that our current linear, course-based, educational practices are frequently at odds with how our neurological system facilitates learning and personal development, the authors set out an alternative model that emphasizes a holistic approach to education that integrates mindful inquiry practice with self-authorship and the regulation of emotion as the cornerstones of learning, while demonstrating how these align with the latest discoveries in neuroscience. The book closes by offering practical ideas for implementation, showing how simple refinements in classroom and out-of-classroom experiences can create foundations for students to develop key skills that will enhance adaptive problem solving, creativity, overall wellbeing, innovation, resilience, compassion, and ultimately world peace.Co-published with ACPA – College Student Educators InternationalTrade Review“This book forced me to reconsider everything I knew about college student learning. The authors of this book suggest that the way we organize higher education to deliver learning and development is not aligned with how the neurological system facilitates that learning. To see an impact from the ways we foster learning we need to examine how we teach (in all its forms). We must find ways to help students integrate experiences and help them develop as whole beings.College student educators must create opportunities for students to make associations between what they are learning across experiences and link their cognitive learning with their psychosocial development allowing them to make neurological connections that will positively impact their ability to succeed. But, the structure of colleges and universities is not constructed to help students make these connections. In an accessible, easy-to-understand approach, the authors of The Neuroscience of Learning and Development help the reader understand the brain and neurological bases of learning. After reading this book, I felt prepared to begin transforming how I design, deliver, and evaluate student learning and development to positively impact students.”Gavin W. Henning, PresidentACPA – College Student Educators International, and Associate Professor, New England College, New Hampshire"Breakthroughs in brain science will be the major disruptive innovation in higher education. A friend and neurologist convinced me that success as a college teacher required an understanding of the developing brain's impact on capacity for learning. In turn, I regularly push Student Affairs to use Student Development theories to advance the field of learning assessment. If one believes in individual differences based on varied paths through physical and psychosocial developments (and I do), then why would we expect standardized tests administered at arbitrary points in time to work well in measuring student achievement? Marilee is spot-on with the topics in this book. I expect the volume to make a big impact."Randy L. Swing, Executive DirectorAssociation for Institutional Research"Higher education is increasingly the focus of attention as research findings about the benefits of education contrast with information about poor completion rates, equity gaps, and affordability. Business leaders and policy makers have asked whether students are learning what they need to in colleges and universities. Faculty and educational leaders who want to help their students learn and gain the credentials they need now have a helpful resource, based on current knowledge of brain functioning and how people learn, in The Neuroscience of Learning and Development: Enhancing Creativity, Compassion, Critical Thinking, and Peace in Higher Education."George R. Boggs, Ph.D., Superintendent/President Emeritus Palomar CollegePresident & CEO Emeritus, American Association of Community Colleges“Both graduates and employers continue to decry the failure of our institutions to develop the whole person, to integrate creating with ‘knowing’, and help students develop the tools for addressing the emotional as well as intellectual intelligence to handle stress, find balance, and respond to daily challenges of the their multidimensional lives. All of these tools are critical necessities to thrive in the face of the dramatically changing workplace and social context of our changing world. This book provides a compendium of tools for the inner personal and spiritual development of students as much as their intellectual development, and demonstrates in each chapter how the inner development strengthens both intellectual development and outer performance.I urge you to dive into this book at multiple points – to use the chapters of greatest interest and applicability in your work; and to consider those chapters outside your normal frame of reference to see how they can contribute to rounding out your own and your students’ development. It is worth the effort and the challenge – and the results, as reflected throughout the book – are demonstrable.”Ralph Wolff, J.D.Former President, Western Association of Schools and Colleges"The right book at the right time. This timely and well-constructed book addresses a vital issue facing higher education today; the need to increase critical thinking, communication, creativity, and resilience for today's college graduates. Drawing on neuroscience research and the exploration of innovations in teaching and learning, this book explores exciting new approaches to improve the outcomes of the college experience. There is really nothing like this in the higher education literature - very impressive.”Kevin Kruger, PresidentNASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher EducationAs a practitioner of non-violence, I have been exposed to and adopted principles of mindfulness in many aspects of my life. I find it difficult to consistently practice in higher education association management; however, I am convinced that the principles of change, moving from a present state to a transition state to a desired state, are best applied when adopted by people who practice mindfulness. Bresciani Ludvik challenges us to co-create a new vision in the large and complex ecosystem of American higher education by combining the neuroscience of mindfulness methodology with systemic methods to navigate whole-systems change. This is a fascinating and provocative read that I highly recommend to my colleagues.Cynthia H. Love, Ed.D.“We have known from decades of previous research that one’s ability to manage stress and well-being significantly impacts one’s ability to develop and learn. The way in which the authors posit ideas for how we can re-design, deliver, and evaluate higher education with this research in “mind” is compelling. This book provides practical evidence-based suggestions for fostering the type of learning and development that our stakeholders seek, and are asking us to provide.”Dr. Chukuka S. Enwemeka, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic AffairsSan Diego State University"It has been almost twenty years since How People Learn summarized initial insights from the new discipline of cognitive science, but these insights have up to now not been turned into practical advice about how to improve teaching and learning in college. Bresciani Ludvik and her colleagues admirably remedy this situation with this far-reaching volume. Going beyond acquisition of classic content and skills proficiencies, the kinds of learning this book addresses embrace equally the development of creativity, empathy, and mindfulness, and include the importance of wellness and relaxation in sustaining mental performance. Everyone who touches students in today’s institutions—from teaching faculty to student affairs professionals—will find something to learn here."Peter T. Taylor & Francis Inc Multiculturalism on Campus: Theory, Models, and
Book SynopsisThe first edition of this book constituted a comprehensive resource for students of higher education, faculty, higher education administrators and student affairs leaders engaging with multiculturalism and diverse populations on college campuses. It was one of the first texts to gather in a single volume the related theories, assessment methods, and environmental and application issues pertinent to the study and practice of multiculturalism, while also offering approaches to enhancing multicultural programming and culturally diverse campus environments. This second edition retains the structure and vision of the first, introducing readers to the key theories and models for understanding the complexity of the students they serve, and for reflecting on their own values and motivations. It provides an array of case studies, discussion questions, examples of best practice, and recommendations about resources for use in the classroom. This edition includes a new chapter on intersectionality, updates several chapters, presents a number of new cultural frameworks and updated best practices for creating an inclusive environment for marginalized groups, and expands the third section of the book on cultural competent practice.Trade Review“The second edition sets out, successfully, to give ‘greater voice to students who are not part of the dominant cultures’. The format includes clear and succinct case studies that assist in revealing the experiences of each group of these students on college campuses. Authors include discussion questions at the end of their essays to assist in processing the material and to move the conversation forward.Arranged into three perspectival parts with substantive essays addressing ‘Awareness of Cultural Issues,’ ‘Information on Cultural Populations,’ and ‘Critical Consciousness of Cultural Competence,’ the book itself is a model of diversity and inclusion insofar as each essay can be understood as a roadmap for those who are just beginning to engage with the topic of multiculturalism on college campuses or it can serve to enrich and affirm the understandings of those who have been working in the area of student development and multiculturalism.”Reflective Teaching“This volume takes an intersectional approach to college student development by providing a thorough overview of the frameworks, applications, and assessments of multiculturalism. Across their chapters, the authors focus on student development. The bulk of their content is dedicated to racial and ethnic identity development. While a wide variety of student groups are discussed, the editors make a concerted effort to unify the distinct chapters by identifying similarities in different multicultural theories and the shared experiences of various groups of learners. Ultimately, because the book is so application-oriented (e.g., the chapters include resources like case studies, discussion questions, and implementation suggestions), it is particularly useful for student affairs professionals and practitioners. The editors and chapter authors do an excellent job of setting up the theoretical foundations of student development models by defining intersectionality, multiculturalism, and multicultural identity. Multiculturalism on Campus is an especially useful resource for practitioners in these challenging times as higher education institutions continue to wrestle with creating inclusive and affirming campus environments for their increasingly diverse student bodies.”Teachers College Record"This book advances our ability as educators to create inclusive campus communities by first providing information about critical issues and developmental processes for key college student populations, and then providing case studies and discussion questions. The focus on developing critical consciousness is especially powerful as it moves the conversation on diversity beyond mere inclusion to a more substantive dialogue on social justice, action, and identifying and challenging systemic privilege and racism on our college campuses."Ebelia Hernández, Chancellor's Scholar - Associate Professor, Department of Educational PsychologyRutgers University"In two words: impressively comprehensive. New professionals and seasoned administrators alike will find much that is useful in the second edition of this book. The editors have again assembled a dynamic constellation of scholars who offer rich insights into the texture and substance of multiculturalism on contemporary college campuses. Anyone who aspires to become a more culturally competent and responsive educator should read this text.”Shaun R. Taylor & Francis Inc College Students in the United States:
Book SynopsisIn this book, the authors bring together in one place essential information about college students in the US in the 21st century. Synthesizing existing research and theory, they present an introduction to studying student characteristics, college choice and enrollment patterns, institutional types and environments, student learning, persistence, and outcomes of college.Substantially revised and updated, this new edition addresses contemporary and anticipated student demographics and enrollment patterns, a wide variety of campus environments (such as residential, commuter, online, hybrid), and a range of outcomes including learning, development, and achievement. The book is organized around Alexander Astin’s Inputs-Environment-Outputs (I-E-O) framework. Student demographics, college preparation, and enrollment patterns are the "inputs." Transition to college and campus environments are the substance of the "environment." The "outputs" are student development, learning, and retention/persistence/completion.The authors build on this foundation by providing relevant contemporary information and analysis of students, environments, and outcomes. They also provide strategies for readers to project forward in anticipation of higher education trends in a world where understanding "college students in the United States" is an ongoing project. By consolidating foundational and new research and theory on college students, their experiences, and college outcomes in the US, the book provides knowledge to inform policies, programs, curriculum and practice. As a starting point for those who seek a foundational understanding of the diversity of students and institutions in the US, the book includes discussion points, learning activities, and further resources for exploring the topics in each chapter.Trade Review"True to its purpose, College Students in the United States provides foundational information about college student diversity accessible to new and experienced higher education scholars and practitioners. Every college and university student success initiative that strives to be evidence-based and data-informed should take advantage of this comprehensive and concise synthesis of research framed by a classic assessment model to ensure their efforts truly make a difference for all students."Jillian Kinzie, Associate Director, Center for Postsecondary Research - Indiana University Bloomington"This updated text deepens our understanding of college students in the United States, for example, the authors’ inclusion of digital/screen time on learning and internet accessibility. Their inclusion of the pandemic, racial/social justice movement, and understanding of multiple identities and intersections are vital as they will have lasting implications on higher education."Stephanie J. Waterman, Associate Professor and Coordinator, Student Development/Student Services Stream, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education - University of Toronto"The second edition of College Students in the United States provides new and updated information about processes that affect students. From choosing where to attend to retention strategies at the institution, this book provides both theoretical and practical information to help administrators and those studying higher education. Each chapter ends with implications for students, institutions, and policy – making the material informative and useful to various levels of expertise, including college students while in college."Vasti Torres, Professor and Chair, Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies - Indiana University Bloomington"Using an anti-deficit framework that resists seeing college students as problems in need of fixing, College Students in the United States is a timely read. The authors emphasize that students are not monolithic and leave readers with a wealth of knowledge about the different environments in which college students are situated. The hallmarks of the book are the discussion questions and learning activities at the conclusion of each chapter, providing readers with a generous roadmap for supporting 21st-century college students."Stephen John Quaye, Associate Professor, Department of Educational Studies - The Ohio State UniversityTable of ContentsPreface Acknowledgments Part One: Inputs 1. Taylor & Francis Ltd Object Relations in Gestalt Therapy
Book SynopsisThe author of Personality Disorders: a Gestalt Therapy Perspective proposes a revision of Perls, Hefferline and Goodman's Theory of the Self in a way that brings it closer to contemporary issues in in the area of Personality Disorders. Understanding splitting and projective identification that chronically lead to experiential impasses, is an essential feature of the psychotherapy of the more severe personality disorders. In order to do so within the Gestalt framework, the author integrates certain developmental concepts fromobject relations theory, especially those put forth by W.R.D. Fairbairn (1954).This revised developmental perspective leads to an Object Relational Gestalt Therapy, in which the here-and-now therapeutic relationship is related to the there-and-then of the developmental past, as well as to the there-and-now of the client's current life situation. This text contains the integral version of the author's doctoral thesis. The thesis as such is followed by chapters on ORGT as Evidence Based Practice, and on the neurodynamics of ORGT. Finally, three cases analyses illustrate the theory in clinical context.Trade Review'Inspired by the need to respond more efficiently to the problems faced daily at the clinic, the author has revised the theory of the Self developed by Perls, Hefferline, and Goodman, but has preserved, in its entirety, the holistic perspective adopted by Gestalt therapy. He has woven together epistemological and methodological considerations about Gestalt therapy, resulting in both the revision of its own concepts and their integration with many elements of the theory of Object Relations presented by Fairbairn. The author also makes many salient observations on how research in neuroscience has given support to clinical practice. Without ignoring or diminishing the importance of the human discovery he invites the Gestalt therapist to enrich himself with the DSM considerations, enabling a higher degree of comprehension related to etiology, phenomenology, epidemiology and to the specific treatment for personality disorders.'- Professor Virginia Martins Costa, psychologist; Clinical Supervisor and Administrative Director of the Institute for Research and Training in Gestalt Therapy, Brazil'Gilles Delisle's unique contribution to understanding personality pathology has been widely respected within the global Gestalt community for more than two decades. This engaging, scholarly text builds on his earlier works to articulate the core epistemological and methodological principles guiding his integration of Gestalt and object relations, and to illuminate theoretically and professionally his dynamic, relational approach to working with pathology. The core arguments are robustly and rigorously articulated to produce a rich, stimulating account of the ways in which the combination of Gestalt and object relations can work synergistically to enhance practice and effectiveness. The theory holds up to scrutiny in the light of contemporary neuroscience and in-depth case studies illuminate theory in action over time. This text is a delightful read, and accessible not only to Gestalt and Object Relations practitioners but also to those with little knowledge or experience of either. Indeed, it is highly recommended for all counsellors and psychotherapists looking for fresh, yet profound ways of working with challenging issues and processes.'- Belinda Harris, PhD, UKCP Psychotherapist and Associate Professor, Nottingham UniversityTable of ContentsIntroduction -- Historical Considerations -- Fifty years of Gestalt therapy -- Theorising and knowledge in psychology -- Integration in psychotherapy: epistemological and methodological considerations -- A comparative analysis of the Perls, Hefferline, and Goodman theory of Self and Fairbairn’s endopsychic structure in terms of Greenberg and Mitchell’s (1983) four fundamental problems -- Propositions for an Object Relational Gestalt Therapy -- Epistemological and methodological preconditions for a Gestalt therapeutic system -- The linear-sequential vision of the Self in Perls, Hefferline, and Goodman: a critique -- The Self and object relations: a revision of Perls, Hefferline, and Goodman -- Gestalt psychotherapy: from object relations to hermeneutic dialogue -- Neuroscientific perspective of ORGT: neurodynamics of the Self in therapeutic dialogue -- ORGT and evidence-based practice -- Case Studies -- Introduction to the Case Studies -- Bob -- Brian -- Jade -- Appendix

Taylor & Francis Ltd Co-Creative Transactional Analysis: Papers,
Book SynopsisCo-creative transactional analysis is an approach to a particular branch of psychology which, as the phrase suggests, emphasises the "co-" (mutual, joint) aspect of professional relationships, whether therapeutic, educative and/or consultative - and, by implication, of personal relationships. The "co-" of co-creative acknowledges the transactional, inter-relational, mutual, joint, and co-operative, as well as partnership. With its roots in field theory and social constructivism, and based on guiding principles which emphasise "we" psychology, shared responsibility, and present-centred development, co-creative transactional analysis offers a re-reading of transactional analysis - and, more broadly, of other approaches to psychology and psychotherapy - which emphasises health alongside illness and pathology; dialogue and discourse; the active engagement and participation of the therapist in the therapeutic endeavour; and the potential and possibilities of relationships and therapeutic relating.Co-creative transactional analysis is very much part of the contemporary concern regarding the "relational turn" in psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, and counselling, and represents a "two-person psychology' and, arguably, a "two-person-plus psychology".Developed by the authors over some fifteen years, the co-creative approach has found a resonance not only amongst psychotherapists, but also educationalists, consultants and coaches. The book itself represents and reflects the co-creative approach in that it is based on a critical dialogue between the authors themselves about their collaborative and independent work, as well as between invited contributors and the authors. It is anticipated that the book will further the constructivist approach to therapy and coaching whereby meaning constantly evolves through dialogue, discourse creates systems and the co-creation of new or novel experiences and narratives provide new relational possibilities or ways of being with each other.Trade Review'This long-awaited book by Keith Tudor and Graeme Summers is a major contribution to transactional analysis (TA). The authors reprise their original model of co-creative TA and then go on to offer us a co-created dialogue that explores how their thinking and practice has developed - both individually and together - over the last fifteen years. They demonstrate in the book the very best of creativity in relationship. It is a must-read for anyone in the field of psychotherapy, counselling,or coaching.'- Professor Charlotte Sills, Metanoia Institute and Ashridge Business School'The traditional core concepts of transactional analysis established by Eric Berne and the other founding pioneers always felt unfinished. I could never formulate what was missing. Keith Tudor and Graeme Summers have filled the gap by describing the dynamic of co-creation. I consider this book deserving of being embraced as the current definitive text of transactional analysis theory and practice.'- Evan M. Sherrard, TSTA (Retired), International Transactional Analysis Association'The authors' co-creativity shines through in this fascinating book. The thinking throughout is humanistic, grounded, challenging, and positive. The combination of willed self, shared responsibility, and limited conscious control creates the conundrums of therapeutic, coaching and other demanding relationships that require just this kind of intelligent and clear attention.'- Professor Nigel Nicholson, London Business School, author of The 'I' of Leadership'Built solidly on the background and context of co-creative transactional analysis, the theory is fleshed out step by step and given life and colour through the description of the methodology. The inclusion of contributions from other transactional analysis theorists gives this volume added depth, diversity, and value.'- Charlotte Daellenbach, TSTA(P), International Transactional Analysis Association'Professionals involved in helping others heal, change, and grow will find sophisticated guidance and provocative questions to take their work forward. They will also find a vivid illustration of the kind of ongoing dialogues that both free up and ground the individuality and insight of all involved.'- Gianpiero Petriglieri, Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour, INSEAD'These experienced practitioners thoughtfully grasp and constructively transcend limitations in their initial training while retaining the value of its core approach.'- Professor Herbert Hahn, Member the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, the International Society for the Psychoanalytic Study of Organizations, and the International Organisation of Group Analytic PsychotherapyTable of ContentsIntroduction , Introduction , Co-creative transactional analysis , The neopsyche: the integrating Adult ego state , Response to The neopsyche: the integrating Adult ego state, and rejoinder , Dynamic ego states: the significance of non-conscious and unconscious patterns, as well as conscious patterns , Response to “Dynamic ego states”, and rejoinder , Empathy: a co-creative perspective , Response to “Empathy: a co-creative perspective”, and rejoinder , Co-creative contributions , Response to “Co-creative contributions” , Implications, developments, and possibilities , Afterword , Afterword , Introducing co-creative transactional analysis , A co-creative TA 101: notes on the syllabus

Taylor & Francis Ltd Transactional Analysis in Contemporary
Book SynopsisAfter fifty years of development and refinement in Transactional Analysis (TA), the theory of methods and the actual methods have changed considerably from those originally published by Eric Berne. Many concepts and methods have emerged and been subject to clinical experimentation, some have been refined and expanded and some are no longer used. This book includes contributions from several authors, each of whom presents his or her unique focus on how TA is used in their psychotherapy practice. This book will address the therapeutic effectiveness of various methods in TA and will cover a variety of topics such as unconscious experience, transference-countertransference, the therapist's transparency, transgenerational scripts, trauma and regression, psychological games, the self-destructive client, an integrative approach to the psychotherapy of obsession, gender psychopolitics, and psychotherapy from a social-cognitive perspective. It is written for both psychotherapists and counsellors who want to learn and refine their knowledge of contemporary TA methods that are most effective with today's clients. With contributions from William F. Cornell, Elana Leigh, Ray Little, Gloria Noriega Gayol, Amaia Mauriz-Etxabe, Karen Minikin, John R. McNeel, Charlotte Sills, Jo Stuthridge, Moniek Thunnissen, Maria Teresa Tosi, Keith Tudor, and Tony White. Foreword by James R. Allen.Trade Review'A significant addition to the Transactional Analysis (TA) literature and a fascinating updating and extending of previous materials of the range of well-known TA authors. Frequent case studies bring the concept to life whilst also demonstrating the individualist nature of psychotherapy and the richness of the different approaches.'- Professor Julie Hay, Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst (Organisational, Psychotherapy and Educational); editor International Journal of Transactional Analysis Research'This book offers many excellent examples of how TA is being applied in contemporarypsychotherapy, and its usefulness as a model for understanding relational dynamics. I highly recommend it to you.'- Vann S. Joines, PhD, co-author of TA Today and Personality Adaptations: A New Guide to Human Understanding in Psychotherapy and Counselling'From the first pages I was captured and fascinated by this great book. It combines both new ideas with solid and profound views of classical TA theory. In each chapter (from James R. Taylor & Francis Ltd Carl Jung and Alcoholics Anonymous: The Twelve
Book Synopsis"Show me a drunk and I'll show you someone in search of God", is a saying that could be derived from Carl Jung. Jung wrote to Bill Wilson, founder of Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.), about his understanding of Rowland Hazard's alcoholism: "His craving for alcohol was the equivalent, on a low level, of the spiritual thirst of our being for wholeness, expressed in medieval language: the union with God". .The author visited the archives of the headquarters of A.A. in New York, and discovered new communications between Carl Jung and Bill Wilson. For the first time this correspondence shows Jung's respect for A.A. and in turn, its influence on him. In particular, this research shows how Bill Wilson was encouraged by Jung's writings to promote the spiritual aspect of recovery as opposed to the conventional medical model which has failed so abysmally. The book overturns the long-held belief that Jung distrusted groups. Indeed, influenced by A.A.'s success, Jung gave "complete and detailed instructions" on how the A.A. group format could be developed further and used by "general neurotics".Wilson was an advocate of treating some alcoholics with LSD in order to deflate the ego and induce a spiritual experience. He wrote to Jung for his comments on this controversial idea. Jung was stridently opposed to "short cuts", to transcendent experiences; however he died before he could reply to Wilson's comprehensive letter. The author explains how alcoholism can be diagnosed and understood by professionals and the lay person; by examining the detailed case histories of Jung, the author gives graphic examples of its psychological and behavioural manifestations.By combining the narratives of recovering alcoholics with a Jungian perspective, the author explains how the program of the 12 steps can lead to a journey of spiritual awakening or in Jungian terms, individuation. This book explains in plain words the language of A.A. and takes the reader inside a meeting to show how it works in practice. The final chapter deals with the criticism that both organisations have "cultish" aspects.Trade Review'Ian McCabe's book on the relationship between Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) and Jungian Psychology is scholarly, well written, well researched and documented, and brings to light a significant historical context. I would recommend it to any serious student of A.A. and Jungian Psychology.'- David Schoen, New Orleans Jungian Analyst and author of The War of the Gods in Addiction: C.G. Jung, Alcoholics Anonymous and Archetypal Evil 'Carl Jung's serendipitous role in the founding and formation of Alcoholics Anonymous is a fascinating story that until this book has never been fully told. Ian McCabe offers a thoughtful and even-handed analysis of the similarities and the differences between Jung's path to psycho/spiritual integration and Bill Wilson's 12-step program for sobriety and spiritual rebirth.'- Don Lattin, author of Distilled Spirits: Getting High, then Sober, with a Famous Writer, a Forgotten Philosopher, and a Hopeless Drunk'In the course of discussing Carl Jung's influence on Alcoholics Anonymous, this book boldly challenges many details about A.A.'s founders and sources, and the varied remarks of those believers and unbelievers who have busied themselves attacking the religious origins of A.A. It enables readers to examine each of a wide number of diverse sources that have often been lacking in coherent research and writing, and helpfully opens the door to A.A. and its roots.'- Dick B., author of The Good Book and the Big Book: A.A.'s Roots in the Bible'This book is essential reading for newcomers and old timers alike. It is a fresh take on the greatest gift that could be given to an addict, which is the 12-step programme. This book rings true and it resonates with a phrase I heard on my first day when I was a newcomer 30 years ago: "Let us love you until you can learn to love yourself".- Tom, A.A. member, Kew, LondonTable of ContentsIntroduction , Carl Jung and Bill Wilson 1945–1961 , Origins of A.A.: Bill Wilson's last drink and recovery , Understanding alcoholism from a medical perspective and through the writings of Carl Jung , How A.A. works , A synopsis of the twelve steps , Spiritual awakenings and cultism , Conclusion , Bill Wilson—Carl Jung letters , Twelve steps of A.A. , Twelve traditions , The twelve promises of Alcoholics Anonymous , Bill corresponds with an A.A. member about his spiritual experience , The third page of Bill Wilson's second letter to Jung dated 20 March 1961 (Kindly forwarded by a confidential source)

Taylor & Francis Ltd Conjunctions: Between Social Work,
Book SynopsisConjunctions engages separately and connectively with therapeutic social work practice, psychoanalytically informed research methods and philosophy, as well as contemporary human service organisational cultures and predicaments, and the societal dynamics affecting social work and psychoanalysis. The chapters are gathered into several thematic sections: Practice, Organisations, Politics Policy and Culture, Research and a final chapter on death, dying and social work. The writing on each topic uses a blend of psychoanalysis, social theory and philosophy to illuminate and develop a psycho-social account of individual, organisational and social processes and dynamics. The author draws directly upon his own and others lived experience of clinical work, organisational stresses and strains, social processes, and research to generate conceptualised accounts of inner and outer experiential worlds in the hope of mobilising emotional and thinking responses in his readership. Conjunctions is therefore intended to be an intervention in modern professional, therapeutic and social life, as well as a contribution to understanding it. Trade Review"In these searching reflections on the practices and institutions of social work and psychotherapy, Andrew Cooper throws much light on the psychosocial dynamics of contemporary welfare. While drawing deeply on his personal experience, his analysis points to some answers to major questions about values and knowledge in social policy: how may we best respond to the individual sufferings stemming from societal ills and human tragedies, and how may the humane insights of psychoanalysis contribute to that task?"- Barry Richards, Professor of Political Psychology, Bournemouth University, UK "This collection of published and new papers is a testament to Andrew Cooper’s distinctive ability to digest and convey complex, professional and personal experiences and ideas in accessible, engaging and nourishing ways. The breadth of the book’s focus- from individual to societal levels of engagement-and the depth of its theoretical application- exploring psychoanalytic and systemic thinking in contemporary welfare contexts- distinguishes it as a publication that makes a significant contribution to the development of the professional fields of social work, social policy and psychoanalysis."-Professor Gillian Ruch, Department of Social Work and Social Care, University of Sussex, UK"It is an important collection of essays (which function as an integrated and coherent whole) and not just for social workers or social work researchers. Taylor & Francis Ltd Tea with Winnicott
Book SynopsisDonald Winnicott is currently the most popular author in contemporary psychoanalysis. His writings are cited in bibliographies even more frequently than those of Sigmund Freud. And yet how many mental health professionals have actually managed to read and digest the nearly twenty published volumes of Winnicott's books, chapters, essays, reviews, and letters?Professor Brett Kahr, an award-winning biographer and scholar of long-standing, has resurrected Donald Woods Winnicott from the dead and has invited him for a memorable cup of tea at 87 Chester Square - Winnicott's London residence - in which the two men discuss Winnicott's life and work in compelling detail. After digesting Kahr's highly accessible "posthumous interview" with Winnicott, readers will have come to acquire a thorough overview of Winnicott's corpus of writings, and will appreciate the historical context in which he scripted his pioneering psychoanalytical contributions.A highly creative exercise in "imaginative non-fiction", this book - the first in a new series entitled Interviews with Icons - will delight novices and experienced professionals alike.Lavishly illustrated by Alison Bechdel, winner of the MacArthur Foundation "Genius" award, with original drawings of Winnicott based on unpublished photographs of Winnicott from Kahr's own archive, this book will be the perfect guide for both Winnicott students and scholars, and the ideal gift for colleagues with an interest in the man and his work.Trade Review'A scintillating blend of history, biography, journalism, theatre, juicy trivia, and theoretical explication, Brett Kahr's book-length "interview" with Winnicott is the best gift a reader of psychoanalysis can receive. As a writer, I experienced admiration and envy. As a reader, I experienced pleasure and gratitude. Seamlessly identifying with Kahr, I felt that I had met Winnicott in person myself. What a rare treat indeed!'--Professor Salman Akhtar, Training and Supervising Analyst, Philadelphia Center of Psychoanalysis'Another Brett Kahr tour de force! Indefatigable historical skills, playful popularising genius, and a deep love and knowledge of Winnicott underpin this amusing and informative imaginary conversation with his hero and posthumous friend. A rare psychoanalytic treat: fun, readable, intellectually robust, gossip-busting, and authentic. Winnicott would be delighted.'--Professor Jeremy Holmes, Visiting Professor, University of Exeter'As a child, I often witnessed Winnicott coming to tea with my parents. With the very same playfulness and artfulness that is Winnicott's legacy, Brett Kahr has captured the sparkle, mischief, and magic that Winnicott embodied in person. Never gossipy, but informative and quirky, often hilarious, this book provides an evocation of the authentic Winnicott. A well-crafted guide to the history of British psychoanalysis.'--Dr Oliver James, psychologist and author of Britain on the Couch, They F*** You Up: How to Survive Family Life, Affluenza, and Love Bombing'Brett Kahr brings his deep scholarship to this engaging and imaginative homage to Winnicott. The great theorist, empathic doctor, and proponent of play and creativity could have no better tribute. In Tea with Winnicott, Professor Kahr has loosened his tie and has let the world see his humour, his wisdom, and his humanity. This is a treat of a read.'--Dr Susie Orbach, psychoanalyst and author of Fat is a Feminist Issue, The Impossibility of Sex, and Bodies'What a joy of a book! Brett Kahr is a most unique writer. I know of few, if any, colleagues, who have the capacity to be so creative, so scholarly, and so playful. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Winnicott on a number of occasions in the 1960s, and I certainly recognise the man that Kahr has brought back to life in this instructive and entertaining cup of tea! This book will be essential reading not only for newcomers to Winnicott, but for experienced practitioners too.'--Dr Estela V. Welldon, Emeritus Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy, Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, London'This book is a wonderful introduction to the work of Donald Winnicott, and as a trained psychoanalytic psychotherapist, I found it helpful to have a guide along the way. Taylor & Francis Ltd Nature in Mind: Systems Thinking and Imagination
Book SynopsisIn a time of apparent global crisis, ecopsychology is a rapidly emerging new field that attracts those concerned with the state of the planet and psychotherapists wanting to bring nature more fully into their practise. Exploring both ecology and psychotherapy from a systemic perspective, Nature in Mind steps beyond our current Darwinian paradigm in search our deep psychological relationships with nature and what stories nature can tell us about healthy psychological development. Drawing on ideas from systemic practice, contemporary neuroscience, and the narratives that have sustained the relationship between our indigenous ancestors and the earth for millennia, Nature in Mind explores the integration of nature and the human psyche and suggests ideas and practises that might help us remember our lost eco psychological heritage.Trade Review"In this remarkable book Roger Duncan presents a merging of his life experiences teaching adolescents, vision-questing, and practicing psychotherapy together with theories ranging from language studies, Rudolf Steiner´s educational ideas, and indigenous holism. In the process, he gives us a glimpse of the relationship between human psychological development and nature--and offers a means toward healing ourselves and our deteriorating world." --Chellis Glendinning, author of My Name Is Chellis and I’m in Recovery from Western Civilization"For the past 25 years I have been engaged in the study and teaching of ecopsychology, mostly in the United States. During this time there have been few books to support the growth of this field or my own ideas, as well as a lack of current literature to pass on to my students to increase their awareness of the relationship between humans and the rest of nature. Every once in while a new person comes along and attempts to fill the gap – some have achieved this and some have not. Roger Duncan’s book however, goes a long way towards accomplishing this goal with Nature in Mind. What he has done is provide a good deal of the essential ecological aspects of ecopsychology that is sorely lacking in the literature that is out there. Indeed, making connections with what young troubled youth need in order to heal with how plants grow is both revolutionary and ecopsychological. This book therefore marks a milestone in the field, with Duncan’s eloquent and evocative descriptions of how we can treat (and teach) our most troubled children through engaging them in them nature based practices. It is my hope that those professionals who are engaged in various youth treatment programs will take heed and use the valuable information in this book. In doing so, we may well give birth to a new generation of adults that can heal a whole lot more than their own traumas, by bridging the gaping chasm between all that is out there and all that is in here." --Lorraine M. Taylor & Francis Ltd The New Analyst's Guide to the Galaxy: Questions
Book SynopsisThis book consists of a dialogue between a young psychoanalyst, Luca Nicoli, and a renowned teaching analyst, Antonino Ferro. It touches upon many of the key areas of contemporary psychoanalysis: setting, technique, theory, as well as post-Bionian models and the 'BFT' - the famous Bionian Field Theory devised by Ferro.Using a friendly informal style, Ferro and his colleague Nicoli challenge the certainties of orthodoxy, leading the discourse toward the unknown and the as yet undiscovered. Both young and experienced analysts will find not only practical advice in this book, but also challenges to their own theoretical and emotional assumptions in the unexplored, ever-changing encounter with the patient. Reading this guide is guaranteed to make them reassess their working methods.Trade Review'The New Analyst's Guide to the Galaxy is perhaps the most engaging, intelligent, refreshingly irreverent, witty discussion of psychoanalytic theory and practice that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The conversation between Nicoli, a relatively new analyst, and Ferro, one of the most highly regarded analysts of our time, moves gracefully between "everyday" clinical matters, such as the analyst's cancellation policy, and large theoretical matters such as the diminishing importance of Freud's work to contemporary analytic thinking and technique. This book is a gem that should not be missed by any analyst, regardless of the number of years he or she has been in practice.'- Thomas H. Ogden, author of Reclaiming Unlived Life: Experiences in Psychoanalysis'I found this guided tour through the celestial realms of contemporary psychoanalysis difficult to put down. The questions posed by Luca Nicoli to Antonino Ferro, the reader's tour guide, lead directly to the cutting-edge controversies in our field - the relevance of Freud, the contribution of Bion, field theory, frequency of sessions, differences between psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, the use of the couch, to name only a few. Ferro's brilliant and innovative thinking illuminates these topics in a way that will stimulate readers to re-consider their own views. Each reader will want to join in the dialogue with Ferro and Nicoli. While the book is designed for the "new" analyst, experienced colleagues will find it just as rewarding.'-Glen O. Gabbard, MD, author of Love and Hate in the Analytic Setting'It is always a pleasure and a source of inspiration to read the many books of Antonino Ferro. This time, however, to use one of his many metaphors, he serves us, jointly with his intelligent young colleague Luca Nicoli, a different and particularly delicious dish. They allow us to participate in a conversation in which Ferro candidly opens his views on psychoanalysis and mainly on his creative and original way of being an analyst. This book makes it clearer why he is one of the very few real innovators of psychoanalysis in our time. Taylor & Francis Ltd To Be Met as a Person at Work: The Effect of
Book SynopsisThis book provides an account of how the 'Theory of Attachment-Based Exploratory Interest Sharing' (TABEIS) and the practice of Goal Corrected Empathic Attunement (GCEA) was used in a university setting to support staff. It works in three ways; firstly, it raises attachmentt theory, one of the pillars of self-understanding, into a central place in terms of reflecting on and learning from the dynamics of business and organisations. Neath explores how well this attachment theory sits with other theories of self and relationships such as transactional analysis and the person-centred approach.Secondly, it is an account of how Neath took an application of McCluskey's theory 'The McCluskey Model for Exploring the Dynamics of Attachment in Adult Life' to the University of Leeds, with learning points made along the way, exploring the practice of a therapeutic-style of group facilitation, and reflection on good practice for professional adult learning and teaching techniques. Thirdly, it will act as handbook for anyone wishing to replicate Neath's work and it includes feedback from the participants both during and after the training process. It will appeal to those new to training, counselling, organisational developers and those wishing to enjoy and see the potential the work of McCluskey.Trade Review"This book is treasure for all of you who are aware that feelings and emotions matter when we think about how to create a work environment that is healthy for its members and at the same time productive from the organisational perspective. With its emphasis on emotions and feelings grounded on attachment theory, and the development by Dr Una McCluskey, this book will give you as an OD consultant, HR consultant and manager a way to think and intervene when your team is in turmoil or 'stuck' and traditional interventions with more structure, routines and hierarchy seems like a waste of time."–Sven-Erik Viskari, licensed psychologist and senior organisational consultant, Sweden "Nicola and Una write in a warm and accessible way that guides the reader through a rich body of knowledge around what it takes to create more human work environments. Crown House Publishing Generative Trance: The experience of creative
Book SynopsisStephen Gilligan’s Generative Trance offers a framework for developing a more creative consciousness and lays out the step-by-step processes by which this can be done. William James used to say that `the unconscious mind is the horse and conscious mind is the rider: it’s the relationship between the two that is most important.’ In Generative Trance renowned trainer Stephen Gilligan shows you how to harness this relationship for a much more powerful and effective therapeutic intervention, and reveals how life can be lived as a great journey of consciousness. Emphasizing that reality and identity are constructed by ourselves, Gilligan explains how generative trance is crucial in creating new realities and possibilities for clients. It is a view that differs markedly from the traditional hypnosis ideas of a client losing control, as well as from Ericksonian approaches that feature a benevolent hypnotist who bypasses the conscious mind to work with a client’s unconscious mind. Instead, generative trance stresses a `disciplined flow’ process in which a person’s conscious and unconscious minds cooperate to weave a higher consciousness capable of transformational change. Suitable for individuals who want to live life as a creative journey, as well as for professionals working with clients in such ventures.

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Emotional Resiliency in the Era of Climate
Book SynopsisAlthough the environmental and physical effects of climate change have long been recognised, little attention has been given to the profound negative impact on mental health. Leslie Davenport presents comprehensive theory, strategies and resources for addressing key clinical themes specific to the psychological impact of climate change. She explores the psychological underpinnings that have contributed to the current global crisis, and offers robust therapeutic interventions for dealing with anxiety, stress, depression, trauma and other clinical mental health conditions resulting from environmental damage and disaster. She emphasizes the importance of developing resilience and shows how to utilise the many benefits of guided imagery and mindful presence techniques, and carry out interventions that draw on expert research into ecopsychology, wisdom traditions, earth-based indigenous practices and positive psychology. The strategies in this book will cultivate transformative, person-centred ways of being, resulting in regenerative lifestyles that benefit both the individual and the planet.Trade ReviewFor way too long the global discussion on how to deal with climate change had lead us nowhere because we were blaming others or were feeling overwhelmed by the magnitude of the problem. Over the past few years we have learned to go beyond blame to the recognition of self-responsibility, to go beyond overwhelm to constructing possibility step by step. Climate change is undoubtedly a global challenge, but in addressing it we are learning about ourselves as individual members of society. We are learning about our still only partially unleashed potential for good. In her unique style, Leslie Davenport takes us through this remarkable journey of self and planet. -- Christiana Figueres, Former Executive Secretary of the UN Convention on Climate ChangeLeslie Davenport has created an invaluable resource for anyone wanting to address climate change effectively and wisely. This book shines a light on the psychological underpinnings that thwart climate progress, and provides tools for meaningful conversations and creative solutions. She reconnects us to the essence of our humanity as part of the diverse web of life. There are a wealth of practices that support an eco-harmonious lifestyle and courageous resiliency for promoting change from personal to policy levels. This book is a hopeful light and a practical asset for navigating the challenges of climate work. -- Lynne Twist, Co-founder of Pachamama AllianceIn an era of climate change and climate denial, all of us need ways to connect to the people and resources that will make us more resilient to challenges. This focused, deeply passionate book provides us with the tools that we all need to recognize the impediments to resilient action and create lives where we can connect with each other and our environment in ways that improve and nurture them. Using a mix of actual disaster cases, applied exercises, and theory, this book sets the bar for the field. -- Daniel P. Aldrich, professor and director of the Security and Resilience Studies program at NEU and author of Building ResilienceMental health professionals have been slow to move beyond individualistic paradigms of mental health. This important book adds a clinically informed and clearly articulated set of tools and insights to the discussion of how we shall adapt to an ecologically changing world. This resource for resilience puts psychotherapeutic tools and ecological science in service to personal and social wellbeing. -- Craig Chalquist, Department Chair East-West Psychology at California Institute of Integral Studies and author of Terrapsychology: Reengaing the Soul of PlaceWe know it's no longer enough to simply unleash more startling facts and blast images of our planet being violated. We also need to cultivate a pragmatic form of hope by helping develop empowering actions, a clear direction, ways to connect with collective and systemic support, practices for effective self-care, and the tools and methods necessary for change. By taking a dive into the prospects and practices that this book offers, we will all learn to do just that. -- From the foreword by Lise Van Susteren, Climate Energy and Environmental Committee of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments in Washington, DCBreaking new ground with healing responses to climate chaos, Leslie Davenport brings not only abundant psychological methodology, but also deep ecological wisdom. This is a book of rare significance. Extending far beyond a "clinician's guide", it recognizes that climate change and action let us experience our unity with all life, and serve as catalyst for collective transformation. -- Joanna Macy, Author of Coming Back to Life.As we enter this revolutionary time on the planet, Leslie Davenport breaks new ground in synthesizing climate science, conscious self-awareness of our interconnectedness with all species and the living earth, ecological psychology, and deep resiliency practices that provide practical guidance for a sustainable future. While it is an excellent textbook, the accessible tone makes it an essential read for anyone seeking insight, inspiration, and a path for effective engagement. -- Brian Thomas Swimme, professor of cosmology at the California Institute of Integral Studies, and author of The Hidden Heart of the Cosmos: Humanity and the New StoryThis book is essential reading for anyone motivated by healing and increasing resiliency among individuals and communities in this time of increasingly turbulent change. Drawing the essential connections between human trauma and large-scale events as Earth's ecological systems are in serious and accelerating decline, Leslie presents, in accessible and compelling ways, the data and experiential practices that can allow us to approach the emotional and psychological impacts of living during the Great Turning feeling resourced and with some equilibrium, ourselves. Given the scale and depth of the challenges we face and their enduring impacts on people, this book is an invaluable resource for all who care about engaging with each other and the world consciously in this pivotal time. -- Nina Simons, Co-Founder & President, BioneersIf you despair for the future of this planet, if you worry about the state of our collective common sense, read this book. MIT's Peter Senge once told me that the success of an intervention is determined by the inner condition of the intervener. Leslie Davenport's work overflows with valuable advice and tools for a healthier inner ecology. This powerful, important book should be on the bedside table of every climate intervener. -- James Hoggan founder of DeSmogBlog and author of Climate Cover UpPsychology has given us the tools to help us through the stages of personal grief, but now there is a vital need to help us navigate the collective grief of our present ecocide, the depletion of species, the destruction of our ecosystem. Leslie Davenport gives us a grounded perspective on what climate change means to our body and our psyche, and simple practices to make the inner and outer changes we need to reconnect with the nurturing Earth and its deep life sustaining energy. She helps us to find true resiliency-a much needed handbook for these challenging times. -- Llewellyn Vaughn-Lee, author of Spiritual EcologyAlthough we are familiar with the physical impacts of climate change, Leslie Davenport argues, with great prescience, that we have too long ignored the deeper psychological impacts. Her book is invaluable: both for the light it throws on why climate change is so hard for us to accept and as a manual for how we can learn to cope and adapt to the growing threats to our sense of place and identity. -- George Marshall founder of Climate Outreach and author of Don't Even Think About It: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Ignore Climate ChangeThe symptoms of the planet are appearing in the consulting room. Grief, anxiety and depression can no longer be relegated solely to the interior of the patient. And more, these same conditions are befalling therapists as well. Emotional Resiliency in the Era of Climate Change offers a therapy which touches the circumstances of our rapidly changing environment. Unflinching in its examination of our current ecological crisis, yet suffused with a seasoned wisdom that offers more than hope; it grants a vision of a psyche attuned to the pulse of the living world. And isn't this what we need in this late hour? Davenport's intelligent, compassionate book is both timely and essential. It is filled with the perspectives and practices which enable us to respond to our dire times with a greater capacity for meaningful change. A vital and needed work. -- Francis Weller, Author of The Wild Edge of Sorrow: Rituals of Renewal and the Sacred Work of GriefLeslie's work marks a much-needed advancement for the integration of mental health and broader context of climate change and environmental threats. She goes further than recognizing the importance of this connection, however - she provides a framework and methodology for supporting those on the front lines of the mental health professions. I know this work will be valued and appreciated by many, and will ultimately support all of our collective efforts to repair and mend our world. -- Renee Lertzman, author of Environmental MelancholiaEmotional Resiliency for the Era of Climate Change is a courageous exploration of the impact that facing the realities of climate change can have on people's mental health and well-being and a much-needed catalyst for teaching people tools of resiliency in a time of planet-wide crisis. This book not only provides the reader with a concise summary of how Earth's climate is changing, but more importantly, it provides compassionate, practical guidance on ways to deal with the dis-ease surrounding this issue. Therapists, clients and the general public will all benefit from the wisdom this book holds regarding civilizations greatest challenge: human caused climate change. -- Jeffrey T. Kiehl, Jungian Analyst, author of Facing Climate Change: An Integrated Path to the FutureEmotional Resiliency in the Era of Climate Change is a pioneering, time-sensitive book that is a must read right now in order to prepare, heal, and transform our human inter-relationship with climate change. Davenport has written an intellectually wise and heartfelt book that provides scientific and practical exercises to move through climate change denial, access resilience and unleash both personal and planetary healing. While this book primarily calls forth on mental health professionals to embrace climate change as an essential aspect of assessment and treatment, this book is also the extremely valuable for anyone interested in fostering increased self-care, embodied wisdom, and compassionate living in relation to the natural world. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Working with Survivors of Sibling Sexual Abuse: A
Book SynopsisSibling sexual abuse is considered to be one of the most common forms of child sexual abuse within the family setting, yet it is often ignored, downplayed or denied in spite the impact on survivors. Shining a spotlight on the hidden phenomenon, Christiane Sanderson provides a rigorous account of the nature and dynamics of sibling sexual abuse. She provides a clear explanation of the difference between developmentally appropriate, consensual sexual exploration and developmentally inappropriate, non-consensual sexual behaviour. The focus is on how these behaviours impact the sibling being harmed, the sibling who is harming, the wider family and adult survivors. This book is essential reading for anyone involved in assessing, supporting, safeguarding or treating individuals or families impacted by sibling sexual abuse and all those working with adult survivors.Trade ReviewResearch on sibling sexual abuse is limited, and its impact can be overlooked or marginalised. In this important new book, Christiane Sanderson-a world-leading expert on counselling with trauma -lifts the lid on sibling sexual abuse, providing an original, practical, and insightful guide to therapeutic understandings and practices in this area. -- Mick Cooper, Professor of Counselling Psychology, University of RoehamptonChristiane Sanderson, writes with clarity about a complex topic, carefully presenting the evidence and writing sensitively, empathically, and practically about what can be done to address sibling sexual abuse. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Therapy in Colour: Intersectional, Anti-Racist
Book SynopsisIf you are seeking to create a more intersectional, anti-racist, and inter-cultural approach to therapy, this edited collection emerging from the Black, African and Asian Therapy Network is an invaluable resource for your practice. This collection covers topics such as the psychological trauma of racism, the various barriers to accessing support for mental health and the lived experience of Black, African, or Asian people in a profession that is still dominated by Eurocentric perspectives, training, and practice. Each contribution further reinforces the importance and benefit of having an intersectional, anti-racist, and inter-cultural approach to your therapeutic practice and contains insight from 27 experts in the psychological arena. This book is split into four sections - the first focusses on colour, creativity, and anti-racist reflections. Part two covers training in the psychological field in the past, present, and future. Part three discusses CPD, supervision and self-care with a specific focus on mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional health and lastly, part five centralises therapeutic needs and psychological wellbeing within the context of identity, culture, and belonging.Trade ReviewThese are Therapists of Colour from across the generations, who have come together to present some of the most interesting and far-reaching thoughts and clinical ideas that counsellors of colour have had maybe for a generation. A book like this, is a bit like a rare event. It therefore deserves to be both witnessed and read and studied. -- Dr Dwight Turner, Course Leader in Humanistic Psychotherapy, University of Brighton and author of Intersections of Privilege and Otherness in Counselling and PsychotherapyTherapy in Colour is a brilliant teaching for practicing clinicians, psychoanalytical students as well as members of the general public. The heart of the book is the intense and personable way each author writes about raciality, racism and the need for introspection into the patient as well as the therapeutic process. It appears as an act of love in motion, giving language to all those places within our psyche that has been hungry for racial understanding of Afrocentrism culture, within the field of psychology. The writing within this book is a gift to inspire us all. -- Fanny Brewster, Ph.D., M.F.A., LP, author of The Racial Complex: A Jungian Perspective on Culture and RaceThis new book deftly navigates readers through a path that deeply analyses Eurocentric 'givens and perspectives' on issues relating to mental health and trauma. A core tenet is the reconfiguration of therapy by taking stock of Black communities' historical lived experience and drawing upon their cultural traditions to enrich therapeutic practice. If you are interested in anti-racist therapeutic practice, this book is a must-read. -- David Weaver, President of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy"Ellis writes that this is the book the members of the BAATN leadership team 'would have liked to have available to us when we were students' - it is hoped it will become a core text. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Becoming a Reflexive Researcher - Using Our
Book Synopsis'This is an optimistic book which advocates and describes a different research paradigm to be practiced and developed. Read it and research!' - Lapidus 'She has achieved her aim of the book being readable and giving insight into the processes of doing research through the lenses of the personal stories of researchers, whilst still writing a text that could be used as a core research method text for those who are themselves becoming reflective researchers. No matter what your background in the social sciences this original book, grounded in the reflexive practice of an experienced teacher and researcher, is well worth checking out'. - Escalate 'Etherington (U, of Bristol) uses several narratives, including her own research diary and conversations with students and academics to demonstrate the way reflective research works in practice. Illustrating her points with poetry, paintings, metaphors and dreams, she suggests that recognizing the role of self in research can open up opportunities for creative and personal transformations. She also explores the use of reflexivity in counseling and psychotherapy practice and research.' - Book News This book raises important questions about whether or not researchers can ever keep their own lives out of their work. In contrast to traditional impersonal approaches to research, reflexive researchers acknowledge the impact of their own history, experiences, beliefs and culture on the processes and outcomes of inquiry. In this thought-provoking book, Kim Etherington uses a range of narratives, including her own research diary and conversations with students and academics, to show the reader how reflexive research works in practice, linking this with underpinning philosophies, methodologies and related ethical issues. Placing her own journey as a researcher alongside others, she suggests that recognising the role of self in research can open up opportunities for creative and personal transformations, and illustrates this idea with poetry, paintings and the use of metaphors and dreams. She explores ways in which reflexivity is used in counselling and psychotherapy practice and research, enabling people to become agents in their own lives. This book encourages researchers to reflect on how self-awareness can enrich relationships with those who assist them in their research. It will inspire and challenge students and academics across a wide range of disciplines to find creative ways of practising and representing their research.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Songwriting: Methods, Techniques and Clinical
Book SynopsisThis comprehensive and groundbreaking book describes the effective use of songwriting in music therapy with a variety of client populations, from children with cancer and adolescents in secondary school to people with traumatic brain injury and mental health problems. The authors explain the specific considerations to bear in mind when working with particular client groups to achieve the best clinical outcomes. All the contributors are experienced music therapy clinicians and researchers. They provide many case examples from clinical practice to illustrate the therapeutic methods being used, together with notated examples of songs produced in therapy. Particular emphasis is placed on how lyrics and music are created, including the theoretical approaches underpinning this process. This practical book will prove indispensable to students, clinical therapists, music therapists, educators, teachers and musicians.Trade ReviewI considered dipping in and out of chapters but ended up reading from cover to cover. I found it interesting and intriguing to progress through the diversity of therapists' orientations, practices and contexts, wondering how it would all come together in the end. There are inspiring ideas and moving case examples expressed in many of the chapters. -- British Journal of Music TherapyPractically oriented, instructive, inclusive and forthright, this book focuses on techniques for writing songs with clients and is geared chiefly toward music therapy clinicians, students and educators. This methods book attempts to explore and emphasize the value of songwriting within a therapeutic context and, ultimately, to define the methods and techniques used, both for teaching purposes and for the analysis and explanation of clinical processes and outcomes. This welcome effort to fully recognize the inherent value of songwriting and to systematically standardize its uses in the field was long overdue, as music therapists have long incorporated songwriting in their clinical repertoire of methods. Reading this book undoubtedly strengthens one's confidence in the procedure of songwriting with the client and in its overall effectiveness as a method of facilitating therapy. As a music therapist who, like so many others in this field, integrates songwriting in her clinical work, I feel that I derived much theoretical and practical information from Songwriting. As a methods book, I found it to be efficient, informative and interesting both to the student and to the practicing music therapist, with a refreshing variety of techniques that may enrich the songwriting repertoire of even the most experienced clinician. -- Nordic Journal of Music TherapyTable of ContentsForeword, Even Ruud. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Receptive Methods in Music Therapy: Techniques
Book SynopsisThis practical book describes the specific use of receptive (listening) methods and techniques in music therapy clinical practice and research, including relaxation with music for children and adults, the use of visualisation and imagery, music and collage, song-lyric discussion, vibroacoustic applications, music and movement techniques, and other forms of aesthetic listening to music. The authors explain these receptive methods of intervention using a format that enables practitioners to apply them in practice and make informed choices about music suitable for each of the different techniques. Protocols are described step-by-step, with reference to the necessary environment, conditions, skills and appropriate musical material.Receptive Methods in Music Therapy will prove indispensable to music therapy students, practitioners, educators and researchers.Trade Reviewthis book now presents us with an opportunity to discover the huge range of practice in receptive music therapy. The authors offer their receptive music therapy methods with conviction and the book could be a real challenge to orthodox thinking and teaching in the UK. Listening to music forms part of many sessions anyway: perhaps it is time to include consciously this "third arm" of music therapy. -- British Journal of Music TherapyThis is an extremely practical book, which will be very helpful to students who may believe that they require a precise and pragmatic step by step guide for facilitating different types of music therapy sessions. This was especially evident in most chapters emphasising the verbal relaxation inductions. Every detail has been considered to ensure the successful application of each method including contra-indicators when necessary when necessary. -- Community Living MagazineDenise Grocke and Tony Wigram are to be congratulated for addressing how the music therapist applies music listening as a therapeutic tool. Because every music therapy encounter involves receiving music in some way, it is exceedingly challenging to describe the role of receptive music in a single volume. Yet, the authors succeed in providing an excellent compendium of techniques that are part of the music therapist's repertoire. Students and professionals will be well-served by this essential guidebook on the practice of receptive music therapy. The authors have contributed an important text, affirming, once again, their expertise in the field of music therapy. -- Nordic Journal of Music TherapyWhile I take the perspective of a music therapy educator and strongly recommend this text for all students, I also see myself as a life long learner and this book has provided me with new and inspiring methods organized in such a way as to function as a reference text, Each chapter stands alone so the student/therapist can flick to relevant parts easily. As the first book of its kind on receptive methods in music therapy, this book will serve many needs of all music therapists and students. -- Australian Journal of Music TherapyThis book offers a thought provoking insight into the powerful and therapeutic effect of music, not just for music therapists but for all those interested in music and the application of art therapies. -- Community LivingTable of ContentsForeword by Cheryl Dileo. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Music Therapy, Sensory Integration and the
Book SynopsisMusic's ability to influence emotions and moods is universally acknowledged, and music therapists have long known that stimulating the brain through the auditory system is a key to obtaining remarkable responses. Music therapy is a particularly effective tool when working with children with autism spectrum conditions, because music communicates with these children on a level where mere words cannot go.Written in a way that is both informative for the professional and accessible for parents, this book furthers the already strong case for the use of music therapy as a resource to encourage behavioural changes for the better in children with autism spectrum conditions. Placing particular emphasis upon sensory integration, the author discusses contributing factors to the behaviour of people on the autism spectrum, and, through the use of case studies, presents the latest approaches in music therapy that are enabling children with autism spectrum conditions to better cope with sensory integration.Trade ReviewDorita S. Berger interweaves the theories of sensory integration and music therapy to present a very practical basis for intervention with autistic children in an easy-to-read style. The chapters on sensory integration and the sensory systems give clear, refreshingly different descriptions of the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology underlying the theory. This book gives a valuable perspective on the relationship between music therapy and sensory integration in the process of intervention with the autistic child and makes one feel that a music therapist should be an essential member of the multidisciplinary team. -- The British Journal of Occupational TherapyThis little book, little in size but not in scope, authored by Dorita S. Berger, seems to cover a paucity because it falls within the reach of those who, without the requisite of being specialists are not fully outsiders; it also serves as an introduction to those who may like to proceed further in any of the several paths that converge and diverge to and from this fascinating area of human adaptation. I recommend the book and congratulate the author for her dedication, effort and beautiful activity by combining art with benefit to the many time forgotten children. -- BioMedical Engineering OnLineThe book is easy to read, jam-packed with information, and of interest to any music therapist working with or researching children with autism. -- International Journal of Disability, Development and Education"Music therapy, Sensory Integration and the Autistic Child" does a master job of explaining music therapy and it's benefits. It's an unwritten language that opens wide doors of communication, understanding and skill building for children who have autism- and we think children in general. Berger's book opens with a concise, 8 page description of sensory systems, and how autism exists in its own sensory realm. Anyone wishing to discover this facet of autism will find this section illuminating. The book otherwise is well organized and directed to explaining how music therapy acts as a device that will enhance development of numerous educational related skills, including spontaneous and appropriate physical response to stimuli; self-management of behaviour; self-esteem; sequential memory and recall of information; temp/rhythm; gross and fine motor skills, to name a few. Berger includes sample goals and objectives for each of the developmental areas. Her text explains the needs and benefits in a way that presents, advocates and professionals can use to support their requests for IEP directed music therapy services. Each subject area contains a useful listing of other sources for those who seek additional information. -- Bridges 4 KidsThis new book by an American specialist opened my eyes even wider to the importance of music therapy, especially as it relates to intervening in sensory integration difficulties. I am sure that it will also help other Educational Psychologists understand the rationale and practice of music therapy to a more sophisticated level. It will be of particular interest and practical relevance to EPs with specialist responsibility for pupils with ASD's. This book gives a strong rationale for the importance of music therapy in the curriculum for ASD pupils. It is excellent and I strongly recommend it to EP colleagues working in the ASD specialism. -- Division of Educational Psychologists' Publication Debate. In this thoroughly engaging and ground breaking text, Dorita Berger has convincingly presented the case for a theory of music therapy and its ability to bring comfort and balance to individuals diagnosed with autism and other pervasive developmental disorders. Dorita Berger has successfully accomplished the task of giving support to "the clinical approach to music therapy from a multidimensional physiological perspective" and has thus made an invaluable contribution to the literature in Music Therapy. -- The Arts in PsychotherapyTable of ContentsPreface/Foreword. 1. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy: Accessing the
Book SynopsisFocusing provides an effective way of listening to the innate wisdom of the body, while art therapy harnesses and activates creative intelligence. Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy: Accessing the Body's Wisdom and Creative Intelligence is a ground-breaking book integrating renowned psychologist Eugene Gendlin's Focusing with art therapy. This new, Focusing-based approach to art therapy helps clients to befriend their inner experience, access healing imagery from the body's felt sense to express in art, and carry forward implicit steps that lead toward change. Written for readers to be able to learn the application of this innovative approach, the book provides in-depth examples and descriptions of how to adapt Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy to a wide variety of clinical populations including individuals and groups with severe psychiatric illness, trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and more, as well as applications to private practice, illness and wellness, spirituality, and self-care.Integrating theory, clinical practice, and numerous guided exercises, this accessible book will enhance clinical sensitivity and skill, while adding resources for bringing creativity into practice. It will be of interest to art therapists, Focusing therapists, psychologists, counselors and social workers, as well as trainers and students.Trade ReviewIn her book, Focus-Oriented Art Therapy, Laury Rappaport, whilst acknowledging how each discipline is a complete practice for self-awareness, growth and therapeutic change in its own right, eloquently shows how the Focusing method can be wedded to this expressive arts therapy to form a "rich, transformational alchemy" (p.16).I found the author's clear, personal and at times, gently passionate manner made the book not only person-centred but also extremely reader-centred. Rappaport invites the reader toengage with the material on a deeply experiential, embodied level, and there are bountiful rewards in store. Rappaport has written the book with several audiences in mind - professionals from each of the two disciplines wishing to integrate the other into their current practice and mental health and healing arts professionals who have an interest in both disciplines but are trained in neither one. An ambitious task, but one which, I believe, she achieves with intelligence and sensitivity. A rich and vivid tapestry of clients' images are woven throughout the book as we are taken on different journeys of healing. All the images are in black-and-white rather than colour which strangely enhanced their magic for me. I felt I was invited to imagine the tones and hues for myself. Rappaport's openness and generosity around her chosen art form resonated strongly for me; just because we are dramatherapists, or play therapists, or dance movement therapists, we do not have sole claim to these expressive media. Nor, as we discover, can Focusers assert exclusive possession of their approach. The spiritual essence permeates the writing throughout this book and I often found myself affected on many levels by its content. I also learnt a lot about art therapy and thoroughly appreciated the author's extensive knowledge and experience of her discipline (for instance, when not to invite clients to use their non-dominant hand in imagemaking) and the distinctions she makes between art therapy and art psychotherapy (prompting my thinking about dramatherapy and drama psychotherapy). Rappaport offers a very convincing argument for bringing Focusing and art therapy together and it would be easy to substitute dramatherapy in place of art therapy in the table on Interconnections (p.88, 90). Although this book is designed to be dipped in and out of, especially the exercises, I would really encourage a full reading of it. This is a gem of a book and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I am indebted to Dr Rappaport's for her wealth and generosity in the therapeutic field and I look forward to the forthcoming addition in the series, Focus-Oriented Dramatherapy. -- Dramatherapy, Di GammageWe have a duty to look beyond the psyche and reference the soma more often in therapeutic work. This book shows you a way to begin doing this. -- British Association of Art TherapistsThis is a gem of a book and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I am indebted to Dr Rappaport's for her wealth and generosity in the therapeutic field and I look forward to the forthcoming addition in the series, Focus-Orientated Dramatherapy. -- Di Gammage, DramatherapistFocusing-Oriented Art Therapy by Laury Rappaport is brilliantly conceptualized and written and will be useful to any mental health worker. Integrating theory, practice and case examples, the author successfully achieves her goal of integrating art therapy with Focusing with application to a wide variety of clients and settings. Her exercises and case examples reveal her to be a gifted therapist and her writing affords her the opportunity to share her creative talent with others. A must read. -- Barbara F. Okun, PhD Northeastern University and Harvard Medical SchoolFocusing-Oriented Art Therapy is a major contribution to art therapy literature and practice. Laury Rappaport introduces a contemplative method and philosophy grounded in the body's felt-sense of experience and its innate and largely unrecognized wisdom. This intellectually provocative, yet thoroughly practical text, establishes Rappaport as an emergent leader in the art therapy world and author of a book that every student and art therapist must read in order to appreciate the depth and breadth of our discipline. -- Shaun McNiff, University Professor, Lesley University, Cambridge, MAIn a time the fields of neuroscience and somatic therapy increasingly inform therapeutic intervention, Laury Rappaport has written a book that is both timely and passionate in its message. As we continue to understand the relationship between the brain and emotion, sensory work or the "felt sense" is central to recovery and repair of both psyche and spirit. Rappaport provides a needed and comprehensive resource on why infusing the process of Focusing with art therapy is natural combination and one that creatively brings together mind and body in treatment. Every therapist who uses creative methods in their work will benefit from the wisdom found throughout this volume. -- Cathy A. Malchiodi, PhD, ATR-BC, LPCC, National Institute for Trauma and LossThe reader can get a solid foundation in both Focusing and Art Therapy through Dr. Laury Rappaport's book. The book goes further to transform both of them, in showing how Focusing is always functioning in Art Therapy and how Art Therapy explicates the Focusing process. With lots of exercises, enriched with examples from therapy and workshops, Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy dives deeply into the life process and yet it succeeds in being a highly practical book. -- Akira Ikemi, PhD, Professor of Clinical Psychology, Kansai University (Japan)Here is finally a fascinating text and guide by a practitioner and experienced teacher in the field, who has the expertise to undertake the long overdue task, in providing a practical grounding for what philosophically supports a similar process, Focusing and Expressive Arts Therapy. Laury Rappaport is an articulate teacher and committed artist, who as a psychotherapist can look back on a long professional career, mastering Focusing and Expressive Arts Therapy alike. Book SynopsisSubliminal Therapy is a technique by which hypnotic phenomena can be used for therapeutic purposes without the need for formal trance induction and can be used either on its own or in addition to other treatment. In this book readers are introduced to the concepts and applications of Subliminal Therapy and are taught how to use it. Subliminal Therapy engages the unconscious to uncover the causes of clients' problems, whether manifesting physically, emotionally, intellectually or behaviourally, and then to resolve those problems through re-framing and re-conditioning. It provides a practical, efficient and logical way to identify the causes of psychogenic problems and to resolve their influence. Although Subliminal Therapy may be a new concept for professionals it has evolved over the past thirty years into a highly efficient form of treatment. The technique has proved especially effective in the treatment of anxiety and the effects of early abuse such as sexual dysfunction, unresolved anger and psychogenic medical problems.
